EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

March 5

I had a real hard time cutting this week’s covers down. My first time through, I had a possible ten covers in the race for the top three medal positions. It was really challenging to try and pick three. I failed at the task. I decided to have a tie for the bronze medal (second time ever). Interestingly enough, none of them are variant covers (there was a cool Peach Momoko NYX cover in the running, but…)

Bronze Medalists

1. Kill Train #2

Cover art by Skylar Patridge

AND

2. The Immortal Thor #21

Cover art by Alex Ross

Kill Train is an awesomely disturbing cover as our main protagonist is wiping the blood from the window of the train. Really cool imagery. Immortal Thor is from last year’s champion Alex Ross and has a great look at the Executioner facing off with Thor. Thor’s reflection in the axe. Oh, and there is Thanos standing in the background.

Silver Medalist

Dust to Dust #3

Cover art by JG Jones

Dust to Dust has had some of the best, most consistent covers of the year. This rattlesnake crawling around this skull is so beautiful.

Gold Medalist

Doctor Strange of Asgard #1

Cover art by Geoff Shaw and Arthur Hesli

Stephen Strange with his coat of many colors on the Rainbow Bridge. This is bright and shiny and jumps out from the pack on a really strong week.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

February 27

So, yesterday I said that the Diamond delivery had not arrived at Comic World and that I might have to do another EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week before next week. I did not expect it to be the next day. But that is where we are. I picked up nineteen books today so I think another group of medalists is on their way.

Bronze Medalist

TVA #3

Cover art by Pere Perez & GURU-eFX

Fun cover with some fun characters. Love Miss Minutes from Loki and Spider-Gwen is always great. Who’s hand is that, by the way?

Silver Medalist

Ripperland #2

Cover art by Alessandro Oliveri

Some wonderful imagery and color on this Dark Horse book. It gives that old-timey feel while still standing out among the books on the shelf.

Gold Medalist

Hello Darkness #8

Variant Cover B

Cover Art by Jenny Frison

Hello Darkness has a great cover every month. This variant cover is both awesome and kind of disturbing.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

February 26

Another condensed week this week as Diamond continues to mess with the delivery to Comic World. No Marvel and several of the independents are absent from this. It is yet to be seen if there will be another EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week this week.

Bronze Medalist

Behemoth #2

Cover art by Jay Martin

The Dark Horse book has a creepy vibe to it. Behemoth has been a cool book and this cover gives us the unexpectedness of some creature. Awesome look.

Silver Medalist

The Human Fly #3

Cover art by John Scherpenhuizen

This is a psychedelic cover with awesome colors and images of Human Fly stands out. Oh, and there is an actual fly on the cover.

Gold Medalist

Bug Wars #1

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Peach Momoko

I got this on eBay today and, since it would have placed had I got it a couple of weeks ago, I decided to include it. And a Gold Medal for Peach Momoko. This is a beautiful variant cover for a cool new series.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

February 19

Big week of books this week. Lots of choices for the medals and it was a real tough decision. I had five books that I had narrowed the list down to and I considered doing a tie for both the bronze and silver medals. However, I made a final decision on the books and found my final three.

Ironically, a book that I saw on the newsstand at Comic World and grabbed because I loved the cover, did not make the cut. It was a beautiful foil cover of Ultimate Black Panther#13. There was also Amazing Spider-Man #68 which nearly made the medals.

So here are the three medalist this week.

Bronze Medalist

Shazam #20

Variant Cover D

Cover art by Mark Spears

I do not collect Shazam, but the opportunity to buy this book fell into my lap (thanks Todd) and I couldn’t pass it up. Mark Spears has been a star this year so far.

Silver Medalist

Mystique #5

Cover Art by Declan Shalvey

The Mystique series has had some extremely intriguing and attractive covers, including this issue. With the skull on Mystique’s body, and a mask in her hand, this gives us a insight into the concept of Raven. This is an amazing cover.

Gold Medalist

House of Slaughter #30

Cover art by Jorge Fornes and Werther Dell’edera

I love this one. The contrasts with the black and blues on the cover are awesome. This is such a interesting cover that it beat some really great ones. It is simply a standout.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

February 14

So I am a couple of days late with the EYG Favorite Comic Covers post. Wednesday on NEW COMIC BOOK DAY, there was a bunch of snow. We had around 8″ here and Dubuque was around 6″ so I did not venture out. Then, Thursday night, I already had tickets for Captain America: Brave New World in Davenport. That took a trip to Dubuque out of the cards for Thrusday.

I headed to Dubuque today after school and, about halfway there, suddenly there was snow everywhere. It was getting bad, mainly because of the wind, but I made to Comic World and got home as quickly as I could. It felt like I was coming home through a blizzard, but it may be that I am just not as used to driving in weather any more. Still, I am home safe and ready to award some medals.

Bronze Medalist

Immortal Thor #20

Cover art by Alex Ross

Last year’s champion, Alex Ross, returns to the medal podium this week with one of his classic Thor covers. It is an action packed cover with Thor dead center.

Silver Medalist

All-New Venom #3

Cover art by Adam Kubert & Laura Martin

The image of the All-New Venom on the cover, with that creepy grin, stands before the red background, causing the character to stand out even more. The reflection in Venom’s eyes are a cool extra feature.

Gold Medalist

Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider #10

Cover art by Mark Brooks

More red background this week and Spider-Gwen is looking awesome in this web. The web itself knocked the title off its place at the top. When I was going through my pile of books this week, this one jumped out at me. I had this one picked and the other two were the debatable one.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

February 5

There are no covers this week from Mark Spears, so everyone else has a chance.

Plus, I have two weeks of Marvel books this week, and, partially because of this, all three medalists this week are from the House of Ideas.

Bronze Medalist

The Ultimates #9

Cover art by Dike Ruan & Neeraj Menon

I have always loved those white backgrounds on these covers so this immediately moves this Ultimates book up the list. Then with the cool white jail bars covering our characters give us a nice perspective for this issue.

Silver Medalist

Namor #7

Variant cover B

Cover art by Olivier Coipel

I swapped the cover A for this one because I liked this one so much more than the cover A book. This is a great look at Namor as he is swimming in the blue of the water.

Gold Medalist

X-Men #10

Cover art by Ryan Stegman, J.P. Mayer, & Marte Gracia

Cyclops’s optic blasts shown on the cover around the entire cover. The title itself is affected by the optic blasts. This is a beautiful use of the red color and gave us something original.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

January 30

Todd! It was White Savior!

I was talking with Todd at Comic World tonight and I was joking about the old issue #3 curse. It seemed as if the independent series for a short while always missed #3 for me, and I tried to remember that book that Drew had taken home that was supposed to be mine. I couldn’t for the life of me think of the name of it. I kept thinking The Last… something. I knew it was a four issue series from Dark Horse, but I couldn’t place the title. Finally, on the way back home, the word WHITE popped in my head and then it was just a matter of moments before I got to White Savior. Strangely enough, it still did not feel right, but I checked the internet and it sure was. That was a real relief getting that off my mind.

This week’s medalists are a FIRST!

Bronze Medalist

Mark Spears Monsters #3

Variant Cover E

Cover Art by Mark Spears.

What a cool cover with all of the monsters around the witch, who looks spectacular. This was in honor of a Marvel series of covers from a few years ago and it is awesome. Godzilla is up there too. Mark Spears is on fire.

Silver Medalist

Mark Spears Monsters #3

Cover A

Cover art by Mark Spears

Frankenstein’s Monster is adorning this cover looking as if he in the electric chair. Will that get rid of Frankie? I don’t know but this cover A is another amazing piece of artwork from Mark Spears. I wonder what is next….?

Gold Medalist

Mark Spears Monsters #3

Variant Cover G Metal Cover

Cover Art by Mark Spears

Absolutely stunning. Despite dropping a pretty penny for this rare cover, I think it is worth it. I love Jaws and this cover captures the terror of the man-eater perfectly. Mark Spears makes history for our site. This is the first time that the same artist has all three medals in one week. It is also the first time that three covers of the same issue placed in the top three. We had Spider-Gwen place in two medal position once last year, but this is the first time for all three places. It is not quite February yet and I do not think anyone will be catching Mark Spears for the Cover Artist of the Year from EYG.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

January 23

A day late, but not a dollar short (Todd took away my four dollars, but that is a long story). So I did not have to go to Comic World twice this week, I waited for Thursday instead of Wednesday. It also helped that there was some snow in the weather. I definitely made the correct decision.

This week’s medalists:

Bronze Medalist

Mark Spears Monsters #1 (3rd Printing)

Cover art by Mark Spears

Mark Spears is hotter than anything right now. I bought a 3rd printing of the first issue because of the cover. This cover is the scene from Monster Squad too. “He’s gonna kill your son!” Cool cover once more.

Silver Medalist

The Tin Can Society #5

Cover art by Francesco Mobili & Chris Chuckry

So much happening on this cover. I love the reflection in the glasses as the other images around the cover stand out. The color of the cover is awesome too. Very stylish.

Gold Medalist

Mystique #4

Cover Art by Declan Shalvey

This is the one that stood out to me with the Mystique face on Nick Fury’s coat and the fire and smoke in the background. This is a truly awesome mash-up cover. Completely stunning.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week Part 2

January 17

So with the issues facing the comic book stores with the bankruptcy declared by Diamond, the biggest of the delivery companies for comic books, nobody is really sure what delivery dates may be moving forward.

Truthfully though, it seemed that this week’s Diamond’s issues were not because of the bankruptcy. Todd was telling me this week was because of a snowstorm that struck Diamond’s big warehouse in Memphis and led to a shutdown over several days which led to the distributor’s delay. Of course, this has been the rule over the last few weeks to month with Diamond as the delivery has been out of whack.

That means we have the second time when I am doing a second post of Favorite Comic Covers in a week. This week included mostly Marvel and some independents, as DC and Image was this past Wednesday. I do not have a problem with that. The more the merrier, I suppose.

Medalists this issue:

Bronze Medalist

Amazing Spider-Man #65.DEATHS

Cover art by Mark Bagley & Richard Isanove

Great Spidey cover with the torn mask over the skull. It is absolutely a compelling image that makes one a touch nervous.

Silver Medalist

Immortal Thor #19

Cover art by Alex Ross

Last year’s champion of the EYG Comic Cover Artist of the Year makes his first appearance in the 2025 race with this awesome Thor cover. This pose strikes the power of Thor as he sits upon that throne with Mjolnir and Stormbringer within reach. I love the golden huge all around Thor giving him that specific hue.

Gold Medalist

Green Hornet/Miss Fury #1

Variant cover S

Cover Art by Mark Spears

The early season leader in the race for Best Cover Artist of 2025 is an artist who may be threatening to run away with this award this year. This is already his second gold medal for 2025 and his book Mark Spears Monsters has not even come out this year yet. Mark Spears is absolutely on fire and this cover for Dynamite shows how awesome he is. Mark Spears has thrown down the gauntlet to the other comic book cover artists out there and we’ll see how things go with the rest of the year.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

January 15

Another week where I do not have the complete books to choose from as the books coming from Diamond did not arrive because of a snowstorm in the Memphis area. That meant that there would be no Marvel or many of the smaller companies. However, the big news of the week was Diamond declaring bankruptcy, throwing everything into question about how the comics are dispersed moving forward. There are huge questions facing the industry now.

Yet, I do have several books this week (and some from last week too) and I have enough for three medalists once again. And all three are Cover A’s.

Bronze Medalist

Juvenile #2

Cover art by Jesus Orellana

Another cover similar to the first issue, with the falling drugs and more around the character’s face. The white background is again a personal favorite.

Silver Medalist

Challengers of the Unknown #2

Cover art by Sean Izaakse & Romulo Fajaroo

The Challengers under water and the blue is beautiful. Oh, and there is Batman.

Gold Medalist

Knights vs. Samurai #4

Cover art by Gianenrico Bonacorsi & Bjorn Barends

A beautifully brutal cover with what looks like someone coming out from the inside of a dragon, along with some intestines and a skull. This one really stands out and shows how some horror can be lovely.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

January 8

Welcome back for the EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week, this week on time on Wednesday night AND ALL COVERS AVAILABLE as it was NEW COMIC BOOK DAY and my comic shop, Comic World had the covers on time (sort of). I do not have to go back to Dubuque on Thursday or Friday to pick up the rest of the books this week. I have them all (for the most part).

Last week, we were all Marvel and DC. Interestingly enough, this week there are none from those two companies among the medalists.

Here we go…

Bronze Medalist

Parliament of Rooks #2.

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Abigail Jill Harding

A beautiful cover in the elegant black and white. This book has had two exceptional covers to kick off the series, both lovely and somewhat frightening too.

Silver Medalist

Geiger #10

Cover art by Gary Frank

The cover combines the faces of Geiger and Junkyard Joe in a very intriguing image. The glowing green of Geiger’s skull is very much popping off this cover and the smoke behind the Joe face is excellent as well.

Gold Medalist

Return of the Living Dead #1

Cover art by Mark Spears

This new series from American Mythology Productions is very hot and has been released some over the last couple of weeks. The cover by artist Mark Spears, himself burning up the cover work, is amazing and the cover has helped this book become such a success. Mark Spears was awarded the EYG Comic Artist of the Year in the Year in Review and I think he may be the early leader for the cover artist of the year for the 2025 Year in Review.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

January 3rd

It is the first EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week of the new year. 2025 kicked off with a delay in the delivery of the comics to Comic World, which pushed this post back from Wednesday.

Last year’s Cover artist of the year was Alex Ross and the Platinum Medal winner for cover was Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood #2 (Variant edition). Can Alex Ross defend his win this year or will there be another cover artist who will overcome the champ? (psst…Mark Spears?)

So… here is the medalists this week…

Bronze Medalist

Absolute Superman #3

Cover art by Rafa Sandoval & Ulises Arreola

It looks like Krypton has seen better days on the cover of Absolute Superman #3. The glowing green is a really strong standout color and I love how the title card is outlined in green too.

Silver Medalist

Saga #71

Cover art by Fiona Staples

This cover’s colors pop out of the new cover of Saga with Emesis in he corner. The background makes it look like a colorful web, but with closer examination, this is a circus tent. A lovely cover that also is very foreboding.

Gold Medalist

Miles Morales, Spider-Man #28

Variant Cover C

Cover art by Iban Coello

Switched out my A cover for this one which I saw on the stand. I love this one with the background of Black Panther and the beautiful NY inside him. I also have a sweet spot for the white background.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

December 26

This is the final EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week for 2024 as next Wednesday’s NEW COMIC BOOK DAY is January 1st. And since it was the last week, of course there were about eight books in the contention for these three medals.

Shout outs to the runners-up that did not make the medal round: The Creeping Below #2, Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #3, Hello Darkness #6, Sabretooth: The Dead Don’t Talk #1, and Metamorpho #1.

The final medalists for 2024 are…

Bronze Medalist

X-Men #9

Cover art by Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, & Marte Gracia

What a cool use of the Wolverine claws, showing him facing off with Psylocke. The claws almost pop off the page.

Silver Medalist

Absolute Wonder Woman #3

Hayden Sherman & Jordie Bellaire

Boy does Wonder Woman look bad ass. The grey background looks awesome and the red symbol stands out wonderfully.

Gold Medalist

Redcoat #8

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Brad Walker & Brad Anderson

This variant cover is soooo cool with the red background and the way Simon Pure’s coat blended right into the background. Then, the big ass gun is a great example of perspective. I picked this off the stand today, replacing the cover A that I had in my pull box. This is the final gold medalist of 2024. Congrats!

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of 12/18/24

We have a couple of more weeks in 2024, and we have already named the cover of the year and the cover artists of the year. Congrats to Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood #2 (Variant) and Alex Ross respectively.

That means that this week’s medalists are the old too late for the date. They will just have to settle for medalist presented this week.

Bronze Medalist

Plastic Man No More #4

Cover art by Alex Lins & Marcelo Maiolo

The Plastic Man series has had some excellent covers. The way he is melting is a very distinct look. The reflection of the timer in his goggles are very intriguing too. Close in to his face is very compelling too.

Silver Medalist

Parliament of Rooks #1

Variant Cover B

Cover Art by Abigail Jill Harding

This new book from Ablaze is a beautiful cover in black and white. Black and white is not used as often in cover art, but this is so wonderful with the creepy birds and some kind of creature behind the man on the stairs. It’s a beauty.

Gold Medalist

House of Slaughter #28

Cover art by Jorge Fornes

Broken glass is a very compelling image and the colors are fabulous. There is just so much to look at on this cover and it does not feel like a typical House of Slaughter book. I noticed this one immediately, and knew it would be this week’s gold medalist.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of 12/9

It is Friday night and my usual Wednesday night post of the comic cover of the week is finally out. Yes, there was more difficulties with the shipment from Comic World, as well as several other shops in the area. The shipment did not arrive until today so I was able to get the books tonight (except for the DC books, which were on time…Transformers too oddly).

With the holidays, I am sure that is a big part of the issue with the delivery, so I would not be surprised to see this happen a few more times in December.

However, be on the lookout for the special Year in Review Favorite Comic Cover of the Year, which is coming soon. We will present Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for both the best regular covers and the best variant covers. Then, we will name the best cover of the year. That is coming soon.

Here are this week’s medalist…

Bronze Medalist

The Terminator #3

Variant cover C

Cover art by Cat Staggs

Quick glance made me think this was Dr. Doom. I can see now that the Terminator is in some leaves. So maybe Predator? I like the green surrounding.

Silver Medalist

Scarlet Witch #7

Cover art by Russell Dauterman

Oooh, spooky looking Wanda image on the cover. I love the colors across this cover. The colors really make this cover pop.

Gold Medalist

Uncanny X-Men #7

Cover art by David Marquez & Matthew Wilson

You can never go wrong with two teams of X-Men facing off with each other. Love how this looks.
