EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of May 6

It is time again this week for the three medalist for best cover of the week. I must say that I eliminated one possible cover this week because I picked up a variant version of The Creature of the Black Lagoon Lives #1 which I really loved. But since this was actually released a few weeks ago, I decided to not count this one as a comic cover medalist. The original cover (Cover A) did place in the medal round prior so it is not like it comes out empty handed. Call this an honorable mention.

Otherwise, we had several comics in the running this week. There were some really cool covers that did not place in the top three. It was two independent books and one Marvel. And the Marvel cover artist has been a medalist several times already.

Bronze Medalist

Ain’t No Grave #1

Image Comics

Cover art by Jorge Corona

A new Western series written by Skottie Young. The cover has some wonderful Western imagery blended together.

Silver Medalist

Crocodile Black #1

Boom! Studios

Cover art by Andrea Sorrentino

New book from Boom! Studios has a very compelling cover. The guy on the bench with that alligator behind him is cool, but I loved the red highlights down on the ground around the body. Is it blood? Maybe, it looks awesome though.

Gold Medalist

Fantastic Four #20

Marvel Comics

Cover art by Alex Ross

EYG Hall of Famer Alex Ross earns yet another medal this week with the great FF cover that is not only beautifully drawn but tells a fun story with Ben and Johnny. What is going on here? I don’t know, but I am excited to find out and that means the cover does its job well.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of April 29

It was a light week this week as there were only 18 new comics this week. I know, that does not sound like a light week, but compared to some of the recent weeks, 18 is like nothing.

Two of the three medalists this week are variant cover D books.

Three medalist this week…

Bronze Medalist

Blood Hunt #1

Variant Edition (Cover D)

Cover art by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau

A beautiful cover featuring Greer Nelson, aka Tigra. Todd gave me this because he thinks I love Tigra, but he mixes Tigra up with Hellcat. Still, this is a lovely cover and I do like me some Tigra.

Silver Medalist

Space Ghost #1

Variant Edition (Cover D)

Cover Art by Michael Cho

I love this Hanna-Barbera inspired cover with Space Ghost and the kids he saved. Just because there is a monkey, it does not make them Zan and Jana.

Gold Medalist

The Blood Brothers Mother #1

Cover art by Eduardo Risso

New Western series from DSTLRY, the cover wraps around the book and it has some layered feel to it. It really is a gorgeous piece of art and the extra large book makes this standout even more. Great cover.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of April 22

Normal week this week. Still a bunch of books.

My #1 this week is a variant cover that I picked up off the stands. I had the cover A already, but I really liked the cover C and it gets the gold medal this week.

But first…

Bronze Medalist

Wolverine: Madripoor Knights #3

Cover art by Phillip Tan & Sebastian Cheng

Wolverine, Captain America and Black Widow are in Madripoor and there is some cool action. I love the way the heroes are layered on the cover, especially the giant Wolverine in the background.

Silver Medalist

Universal Monsters: Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives #1

Cover art by Matthew Roberts & Dave Stewart

This was not even my favorite of the covers of this book as I have now ordered the cover by Joshua Middleton. That does not take away from this beautiful cover with its pink highlights and the iconic Universal Monsters character. This was a fun issue too.

Gold Medalist

Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #3

Cover art by Romy Jones

Nothing better than seeing Wanda relaxing on her bed, perusing some of the comics from Marvel Comics, including that oddball Roxxon Thor book. This variant cover is so cool, especially with those weird soles of Wanda’s shoes. It is “Approved by the Witch Code Authority“. What more can you want?

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of April 15

Last week, a shipment of comics heading to Comic World was lost in the mail. Only Image books came in last week. That meant that there was a MASSIVE amount of books this week. A large number to narrow down to just three medalists. It was a tough decision as I had about ten that I had in the finals, finally moving down to the top three. No Image this week.

Bronze Medalist

Fantastic Four #19

Cover art by Alex Ross

One of the greatest cover artists of all time received another medal this week as Alex Ross brings an awesome cover featuring Sue Storm in a very original looking issue.

Silver Medalist

Blue Book: 1947 #3

Cover Art by Michael Avon Oeming

Blue Book has been one of the consistently beautiful covers, using the colors of blue and black every issue. The Dark Horse comic does a lot with a little.

Gold Medalist

Blow Away #1

Cover art by Annie Wu

Brand new comic from Boom! Studios. Much like last week’s winner, Phantom Road, less on this cover is more. The beautiful blue ice makes this feel very special while the character is in the distance, showing on how much this character has to go through. It is a lovely piece of art.

A few honorable mentions this week considering I got 38 comics this week: Night People #2, Something Epic #9, Black Widow/Hawkeye #2, Spectacular Spider-Men #2, and Avengers: Twilight #5.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of April 8

So we have a strange week this week. My comic shop had their new comics lost in the mail. No one knows what happened to it. The only books that came out this week were Image/DC. I had nothing from DC which meant this week’s comic cover medalists are out of five Image Comics. Next week will be a large one.

Bronze Medalist

Rat City #1

Cover art by Zé Carlos

I don’t know anything about this issue except that sure looks like Spawn on the cover. I picked it up as a curiosity and because I liked the cover. I am interested to see what it is about.

Silver Medalist

Napalm Lullaby #2

Cover art by Bengal

I like this cover quite a bit with this new title from Image. Love the background on this cover as our main protagonists stand in front. I love how everything around them seem to leap off the cover. The title stands out beautifully too.

Gold Medalist

Phantom Road #10

Cover art by Gabriel H. Walta

I love this cover. Truthfully, it is not as much the art of the cover that stands out, but the coloring. This green makes this such a compelling cover. You remember the color because you do not typically see something like this.

Congrats to the all-Image week.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of April 1 (no kidding)

Here we go with the best comic covers of this week. It is the week of April Fools Day but none of this is a joke.

Bronze Medalist

Sand and Twitch Case Files #1

Cover art by Kevin Keane and Todd McFarlane

The background characters from the Spawn universe have their own book and the pair of them standing before the darkness of Spawn and the red cape. The rain was a nice touch.

Silver Medalist

Antarctica #10

Cover by Willi Roberts

The finale of this Image book sports a beautiful cover with red and black tones. The form stands out as does the title in its vertical line.

Gold Medalist

Deadpool #1

Cover Art by Inhyuk Lee

Beautiful foil variant cover of the brand new Deadpool series. Is this the 90s? No because every fifth comic does not have a foil cover. It makes the ones we get all the more special. This is a stunning cover with the return of the Merc with a Mouth.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of March 25

It is another NEW COMIC BOOK DAY and I have the three medalist for this week’s best covers. All three this week are independent issues. The Marvel books this week were fine, but these three stood out more than the others.

Bronze Medalist

Feral #1

Cover art by Trish Forstner & Tony Fleecs

There is actually a really fun variant cover for this book too that probably would have made this list. The blood red jumps off the cover and the cartoonish looking cat stands out in this strange environment. Looking forward to seeing what this is like.

Silver Medalist

The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos #8

Cover Art by Nick Robles

The book continues with the story of Adam Frankenstein and the cover pops very well, especially with the border around the outside.

Gold Medalist

Zorro: Man of the Dead #3

Cover Art by Dan Panosian

What a beautiful black and white aesthetic to this Zorro cover featuring our main protagonists. This is truly a stunning cover that took the gold medal by a long stretch this month.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of March 18

Welcome back to the medalist for this week. Some great books this week. It was a tough choice.

Bronze Medalist

Something Epic #8

Cover art by Szymon Kudranski

The return of this awesome book comes with a beautiful cover that looks kind of like a fowl that we know. Love it.

Silver Medalist

Star Wars: Visions #1

Cover Art by Takashi Okazaki

Another Star Wars book that I do not collect, but that I picked up heavily because of the cover art. Not solely, but it certainly helped. The beautiful black and white cover with the red lightsaber and purple print was stunning.

Gold Medalist

X-Men Forever #1

Cover Art by Mark Brooks

What an amazing image on the cover of this new X-book. Jean Grey with what looks like a blood pattern surrounding her that is absolutely iconic.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of March 11

It is that time of the week. It is NEW COMIC BOOK DAY and that means it is time to give some medals out to the best comic covers of the week.

This week, we have an EYG Hall of Famer with his third (I think) medal and a group that has received their second medal in as many issues.

BRONZE MEDALIST

Dark Ride #11

Cover Art by Andrei Bressan & Adriano Lucas

The Image Comic with the demonic amusement park provided a great cover art with a clearly demonic character. The eyes and the teeth are just astounding.

SILVER MEDALIST

The Immortal Thor #8

Cover Art by Alex Ross

This the third medal awarded to the EYG Hall of Famer Alex Ross. Ross is the preemptive cover artist and he has been doing covers for Marvel including Fantastic Four, Avengers: Twilight, and Thor. This one is different than his normal cover with more of the vines taking the main section of the cover.

GOLD MEDALIST

Amazing Spider-Man #45

Cover art by John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna & Marcio Menyz

This is the second issue in a row where Amazing Spider-Man cover artists Romita Jr., Hanna & Menyz received a medal. Last time it was a bronze. This one is a gold! Beautiful image of Spidey in the rain looking the worse for wear. The shadows are just a perfect addition to the image.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of March 4

It’s late this week because of Parent/Teacher Conferences so we’ll jump right into it.

Bronze Medalist

Torpedo 1972 #1

Cover Art: Eduardo Risso, Dan Panosian & Fritz Casas

The first cover medalist from Ablaze Publishing. There is a cool use of pictures and the gun in the background.

Silver Medalist

Thanos #4

Cover Art: Leinil Francis Yu & Sunny Gho

A kick ass Thanos just dominating the cover of this issue. The final issue of this limited series that reunites Thanos with his love, Death.

Gold Medalist

Pine & Merrimac #3

Cover Art: Fran Galán

This is a beautiful cover featuring Boom! Studio’s new hit series. The flames stand out on the this cover, making the entire book all the more interesting.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of February 26

It is that time again this week to name the three top medal winners for the favorite comic cover of the week at EYG. Always some fun books with some outstanding art work.

Kicking things off…

Bronze Medalist

Amazing Spider-Man #44

Cover art by John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna & Marcio Menyz

I really like the reflection of Spidey in the Madame Masque mask as the Gang War continues in the main spider-title.

Silver Medalist

Newburn #15

Cover Art by Jacob Phillips

The main standout for this cover is the color pattern. The whole orange and black motif really makes this dramatic cover look awesome and unlike most comic covers you see.

Gold Medalist

Ice Cream Man #38

Cover Art by Martin Morazzo & Chris O’Halloran

Todd tried to get me to buy the variant cover of this issue, but he had no idea that I had already chosen this as the cover of the week and had no intention of changing to the other variant. I love the humor of this cover while also highlighting the unsettling nature of the series.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of 2/19

It is another week of NEW COMICS from Comic World. It was not quite as large of a week as last week, but there are some great books.

Here are this week’s medalists….

Bronze Medalist

The Six Fingers #1

Cover Art by Sumit Kumar, Lee Loughridge, & Tom Muller

One of the new Image Comics books that fall into the shared universe of Neo Novena. Last week there was The One Hand. Now we have this mystery. The cover is really creative.

Silver Medalist

Deer Editor #2

Cover art by Sami Kivelä

Look at this cover. You have a deer-man tied to a chair with someone dressed in a nice outfit. I love the color scheme with the black and red and slight blue tint. Nicely done from this Madcave book.

Gold Medalist

Bone Orchard: Tenement #9

Cover Art by Andrea Sorrentino

Just look at that beautifully creepy cover. Worms and an apple. I love the color scheme too… and it looks very much like the gold medal that it was just awarded.

This was the second time Andrea Sorrentino placed on the medal stand (previously winning the silver medal for Tenement #8).

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of February 12

Three Marvel books in the medalists this week. There were some solid independent book covers too, but the finals are all excellent.

Bronze Medalist

Blade #8

Cover Art by Elena Casagrande & KJ Diaz

Blade is fighting against more than just vampires. How about some glowing green ghosts? This cover looks awesome with Blade standing like a bad ass.

Silver Medalist

Vengeance of the Moon Knight #2

Cover Art by David Finch

Khonshu is in the background as we get the mysterious new black suit ‘Moon Knight’ along with Hunter’s Moon. Great cover.

Gold Medalist

Fall of the House of X #2

Cover art by Pepe Larraz & Marte Gracia

Polaris in a green shine really stands out of the cover with the giant head of a sentinel (maybe?)

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of February 5

It is NEW COMIC BOOK DAY and that means we have the new winner of the EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week. Once again, I narrowed it down to about six choices before I decided on the medal winners.

Here we go…

Bronze Medalist

The Cull #5

Cover Art by Mattia De Iulis

The final issue of the five-issue mini series from Image.

Silver Medalist

Fantastic Four #17

Cover Art by Alex Ross

Another great cover by Alex Ross, but what really is what earned the silver medal was the cameo in the upper right hand corner of the cover from Indiana Jones himself! I was surprised when I saw him there. It also looks like Short Round’s hat there.

Gold Medalist

Star Wars: Mace Windu #1

Cover Art by Mateus Manhanini

Here is how I know this is the cover of the week. I do not collect any Star Wars titles. I like Star Wars but I am not interested in reading them. I saw this issue on the wall at Comic World and I saw the cover and I was immediately attracted to it.

I kept looking at it and finally moved over to look at it closer. I saw it was written by Marc Bernardin so that helped even more. The cover brought me in and helped me decide to buy this #1.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of January 29-Feb. 2

It is time once again to pick our medalists for the favorite covers of the week. I had narrowed the comics this week down to six contenders. That was better than last week, even with this being the fifth week of January.

Bronze Medal

Deadly Hands of Kung Fu: Gang War #2

Cover Art by David Aja

Deadly Hands: Gang War #1 was a winner of this award last month and this time the cover makes the podium at the bronze level.

Silver Medal

Spine-Tingling Spider-Man #4

Cover Art by Juan Ferreyra

Another series that was a former winner of this award, Spine-Tingling has had some of the best covers of the year so far.

Gold Medal

Avengers Inc. #5

Cover Art by Daniel Acuña

The final issue of Avengers Inc. has one of the most interesting and beautifully designed covers. There is a raw feel to the art that really works for the series.
