EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of October 28

Busy, busy night. World Series. Finale of Agatha All Along. And, of course, the Favorite covers of theweek.

This week, we have three variant covers winning the medals. Todd did a great job picking out the covers for my box this week (but don’t tell him!)

Bronze Medalist

Redcoat #7

Variant Cover B

Cover art by German Peralta

Such a fun cover with Simon Pure laying upon a pile of bones and skeletons. It is a good character cover as we see Simon, who is as old as these skeletons, just kicking back and relaxing.

Silver Medalist

Feral #7

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Trish Forstner & Tony Fleece

What an attractive and fascinating cover. The bright light behind the cat head is excellent with the black color in the back of the cover.

Gold Medalist

Namor #4

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Alessandro Cappuccio

What a beautiful and regal image of Namor beneath the water, the light shining from above. Sharks swimming around the top of the page. Love the contradiction of the light at the top and the darkness at the cover’s bottom.

Three variant covers that show the quality of artists out there right now.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of 10/21

Big week this week. I literally went through my pile of comics just now and I picked out nine books as potential medalist this week. A great week of covers.

It is one of those weeks where there are no Marvel or DC in the cover medalists. Unbelievably, two of the places are taken up by IDW books. That has got to be a first.

Medalists this week:

Bronze Medalist

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #3

Cover art by Rafael Albuquerque

This new Jason Aaron written TMNT series has been epic so far and their covers have been great. What an image with (I’m guessing) Leonardo walking away from his sword with his mask wrapped around it. Absolutely gorgeous cover.

Silver Medalist

The Exorcism at 1600 Penn #1

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Jock

What an amazing variant cover to this series that just came out of nowhere. I love the red and the black mixed with the demon-like creature and the Presidential seal. This Jock variant is extremely hot!

Gold Medalist

Hello Darkness #4

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Jenny Frison

What an amazing cover. We have seen the close up on eyes before, but the skull reflection in the eye and the single tear running from the eye is just astounding. The title of the book down in the lower corner allows the art to dominate the cover. This is breath-taking.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of October 14

So, I am a little later today because of parent/teacher conferences today, plus Agatha All Along episode six…and the Dodgers are on. So I am getting to this right now.

Bronze Medalist

Grim #20

Cover art by Flaviano

A creepy cover with that big scythe behind makes this cover stand out really well. The dark red and black work well together…as will the next cover.

Silver Medalist

The Department of Truth #26

Cover art by Martin Simmonds

What a great cover with the singer on the cover and the black and red coloring forming the familiar Xs in the background. This one stands out for fans of this book.

Gold Medalist

Christopher Chaos Halloween Special #1

Cover art David Talaski

The blue signifies Christopher Chaos, and the lightning and the electricity creates a cool image of Christopher Chaos charging up a jack o’ lantern. This is really an attractive cover.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

The week of October 7

Good evening to all. It is time to award some medals! This week we have three separate companies in the places. I should throw out a honorable mention this week to Exceptional X-Men #2. I have a special soft spot for all-white backgrounds on covers and this book nearly tickled my heart enough to earn a medal. Just came up short though.

Bronze Medalist

Seance in the Asylum #1.

Cover art by Andrea Mutti.

A very eerie cover with the ghosts appearing behind someone at the table. The idea of the book had intrigued me and this cover is very striking, making me wonder what it was going to feature.

Silver Medalist

Geiger #7

Cover art by Gary Frank & Brad Anderson

Something about a three-eyed zebra that just makes a cover pop. I also love the color int he background. It makes this cover very attractive, it should make someone stop and take a closer look at the book, and isn’t that the main job of cover art?

Gold Medalist

Fantastic Four #26

Cover art by Joshua Cassara & Dean White

The Fantastic Four has had a very good year for comic covers, but this is the first time this year that they earned a medal without it being Alex Ross. The imagery of Reed and Johnny struggling to keep from drowning in a bunch of blood is an amazing visual and really solidified the gold medal this week.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of September 30

Welcome back to the EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week. It is a busy night (Agatha All Along is on!) and we’ll just jump into this.

Bronze Medalist

Daredevil #14

Cover art by John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna, and Richard Isanove

What a dramatic cover this was. The imagery of the DD mask being held up in the lightning storm with the rain coming down… excellent.

Silver Medalist

Plastic Man No More #2

Cover art by Alex Lins & Marcelo Maiolo

Plastic Man, trying to hold himself together, makes this an extremely attractive and intriguing cover.

Gold Medalist

Hyde Street #1

Cover art by Ivan Reis, Danny Miki, and Brad Anderson

This is a cool looking new series from the Ghost Machine imprint from Image. The purple color of his face with the glowing green of the glasses just makes this stand out.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of September 23

It’s NEW COMIC BOOK DAY so it is time for the comic covers of the week!

Where as last week, I mentioned that I did not think it was the best week ever for cover art. There was nothing terrible, mind you, but nothing really knocked my socks off. Well, this week was significantly stronger as I had to choose from a possible list of seven books.

Here we go….

Bronze Medalist

Sherlock Holmes: The Dark Detective #1

Cover art by Dave Elsey

I am a fan of Sherlock Holmes and this cover gives us a new look at the iconic gentleman detective. The chair, the background, the newspaper. Everything is so interesting that it works for Sherlock.

Silver Medalist

Hello Darkness #3

Cover art by Paolo Rivera

Talk about a compelling cover. What could this possibly be showing? The lovely naked woman with the blood running down her arm and the title carefully covering anything inappropriate.

Gold Medalist

Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood #2

Cover art by Mitsuhiro Arita

This actually came out last week, but I got the A cover. Todd insisted that this was a beautiful cover and he is 100% right. This is a beautiful piece of art and it deserves this spot on the list.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

September 18, 2024

I am anxiously awaiting the debut of Agatha All Along tonight (in about 30 minutes from now) and tomorrow is Talk Like a Pirate Day (always one of my favorite times of the year). It is a busy time of the year.

Honestly, I did not have any covers this week that blew my socks off. There were several decent ones, but nothing that was obviously going to medal. Todd said that the variant cover of Spider-Man: Black Suit and Blood would be the automatic winner, but I did not get that cover. It was sold out when I went to look for it.

So here are this week’s winners.

Bronze Medalist

Dark Knights of Steel #3

Cover art by Tirso

I love this action filled cover as the battle is falling right into the title. I am a fan of white backgrounds too and the grey blur behind the characters really look great.

Silver Medalist

Spider-Society #2

Cover art by Pete Woods

Miguel standing strong as the rest of the Spider-people are scattered on the ground behind him. Miguel’s webbing cloak floating in the air behind him. Just a strong looking cover with the question about what is exactly going on.

Gold Medalist

Ice Cream Man #41

Cover by Martin Morazzo & Chris O’Halloran

Ice Cream Man has had all kinds of fun covers over the years. This parody of a James Bond cover is yet another fun satirical cover. The secret agent is holding an ice cream cone.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of September 9

Three winning comic covers, three separate comic book companies. Nicely spread out this week. There is one variant cover and two number ones. One artist who is already in the EYG Hall of Fame, and in fact was in an early class (Class of 2012).

It is September 11th today and it is a good day for reflection.

Bronze Medalist

Groo: Minstrel Melodies #1

Cover art by Sergio Aragones

This is the EYG Hall of Famer. Sergio Aragones has been treating us with Groo books for years and Groo is one of my favorite characters and this cover really captures the humor of the character.

Silver Medalist

Wolverine #1

Cover art by Martin Coccolo & Bryan Valenza

A new Wolverine book featuring some great variants, but I think the cover A is right there with the best of them. This gives us an amazing view of Wolverine the character atop of these skeletons. I also love the snowy trees in the background.

Gold Medalist

Geiger #6

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Francis Manapul

A glowing man and his two-headed dog. What more could you want. I love the shades of green across this variant cover as Geiger seems to be relaxing with a book. Beautiful art.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of September 2

It is NEW COMIC BOOK DAY so it is time to pick our medalists for this week. Last week we had no Marvel, but will the House of Ideas make its way back to this week’s medalists? Let’s see…

Bronze Medalist

Plastic Man No More #1

Cover art by Alex Lins & Marcelo Maiolo

I have always enjoyed Plastic Man, but this cover is a little unexpectedly frightening and that’s cool.

Silver Medalist

Spider-Boy #11

Cover art by Paco Medina & Edgar Delgado

This Spider-Boy cover is just a lot of fun. Just hanging out on the back of a school bus. While holding on to his Spider-Man lunch case. This works so well.

Gold Medalist

The Ultimates #4

Cover art by Dike Ruan & Neeraj Menon

A Doctor Doom mask with Fantastic Four mice. What a fascinating cover, plus I love the white background. White background is always a personal favorite.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of August 26

It is NEW COMIC BOOK DAY once again. I got a ton of books this week and I have not had much chance to get to them much yet. But the Favorite Covers of the Week MUST GO ON!!!

I have zero Marvel in the top three this week. Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider #4 almost made it.

Here are this week’s medal winners.

Bronze Medalist

Something is Killing the Children #40

Cover art by Werther Dell’Edera

A fascinating cover with Eric Slaughter front and center. Whose hand is holding the gun to her head? She looks to be holding a gun off cover too. It tells a story that I am very curious about.

Silver Medalist

Killadelphia #35

Cover art by Jason Shawn Alexander

One of the most interesting Killadelphia covers I have seen. The giant vampire in the back with the huge fans and the series of crosses. I also love the sideways red title up the side.

Gold Medalist

The Nice House By the Sea #2

Cover art by Alvaro Martinez Bueno

What a lovely, and yet scary, cover. The colors are beautiful. The shine across the face of the woman on the cover. It makes me wonder exactly what is going on and that is what a good cover will do.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of August 19

We are a day late this week because I am back at school, getting ready for it to start, and we had our open house at the school. I couldn’t get to Dubuque for NEW COMIC BOOK DAY so I had to push that back until Thursday night (SAD).

Here are this week’s winners. I had a tough decision between gold and silver and then I had probably about four possible choices for the bronze. Good week for the covers.

Bronze Medalist

Redcoat #5

Cover art by Bryan Hitch & Brad Anderson

An exciting looking cover with Simon Pure in a lot of trouble with sharks everywhere around him. The blue of the water with the sharks look great. This is also a wrap around cover with more on the back.

Silver Medalist

Scarlet Witch #3

Cover art by Russell Dauterman

Wanda is on this cover looking dark and scary. The combination of the red and black really make this cover pop. There is a look on Wanda’s face that adds to the overall story of the cover.

Gold Medalist

Get Fury#4

Cover art by Dave Johnson

The red of this cover is sensational. forming the blood dripping down Nick’s face, and also forms his eyepatch. This is a stunning cover, using that color red jumping off the page.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of August 12

We are back with the EYG Favorite Comic Covers from this week. Being honest, this week’s covers were, at best, okay. None of them really jumped out at me. I did find three decent ones and a handful of pretty solid ones. That is okay. We have a returning cover artist and a couple of new ones.

Bronze Medalist

Jonny Quest #1

Variant Cover C

Cover art by Tom Raney

I picked this up off the rack today because I so liked the Space Ghost book from Dynamite. This was the only cover out of a bunch that was remaining. I liked this one a lot. The variant has some great action and excitement.

Silver Medalist

Amazing Spider-Man #55

Cover art by John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna & Marcio Menyz

Comic World owner Ben was checking my order out and he stopped at this issue saying that this was one of John Romita Jr.’s best recent covers. He said the cover was filled with action, emotion and that it was more than just a pic of the characters. He’s right. This is an excellent cover showing off Spidey’s determination and heroism.

Gold Medalist

Wonderland: Return to Madness #2

Cover art by Guillermo Fajardo

A brutal looking cover with bloody bodies all over the place on the cover of this new Zenescope book. It really gives a message about what to expect inside this book.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of August 5

Three medalists this week and they all come from the House of Ideas, Marvel Comics. I actually had a list of about six or so in the competition so it was a solid cover week.

Bronze Medalist

Incredible Hulk #15

Variant cover C

Cover art by Todd Nauck & Rachelle Rosenberg

Disco Dazzler cover! What more could you want than a sparkly Hulk on roller skates? Like most variant covers, this has zero to do with the story, but this cover was a ton of fun.

Silver Medalist

Avengers #17

Cover art by Joshua Cassara & GURU-eFX

Storm joins the Avengers and she is a major force on this Avengers cover. The lightning from her eyes is extremely dramatic and the colors of the cover are perfect for Ororo.

Gold Medalist

Uncanny X-Men #1

Cover art by David Marquez and Matthew Wilson

With all the relaunching X-Men books, Uncanny X-Men comes with the cover art featuring the hands of the members of the new team…each extremely distinctly X.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of July 29

Here we are for the EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week. Three Marvel Comics this week, one variant and one of, probably, the artist with the most medals this year so far.

Bronze Medalist

Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin #4

Cover Art by Paulo Siqueira & Rachelle Rosenberg

I do like white space. I also love the way the title is broken as Spidey and Proto-Goblin are falling down the cover.

Silver Medalist

The Immortal Thor #13

Cover art by Alex Ross

Alex Ross has been the most awarded medalist so far in 2024. This one is just a lot of fun with Thor and Hercules in an arm wrestling contest that does not seem to be too interesting for Thor.

Gold Medalist

What If Donald Duck Became Wolverine #1

Variant cover

Cover art by Peach Momoko

2024 Eisner Award winner Peach Momoko is awesome with the covers and this Donald/Wolverine mash up is so cute. It’s the standout cover of the new Disney/Marvel What If series.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of July 22

This week was a giant week of books, so there are a lot of choices for the best cover this week. Once again, there are two variant covers in the final three. One of which Todd selected for me and one that I beat him to.

Bronze Medalist

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1

40th Anniversary Variant

Cover art by Eric Talbot

The brand new TMNT book was one that I picked off the stand and I had a choice of three different covers. This was labeled as the 40th Anniversary Variant with Raphael inside a red spotlight. This cover is so bad ass and it went very well with this excellent story.

Silver Medalist

The Nice House By the Sea #1

Cover art by Nick Robles and Hayden Sherman

Another book that I pulled off the stand. This book from DC’s Black Label is a sequel to another Tynion book called The Nice House on the Lake and the cover with the burning building in the background with this person in front with a skull creates a powerfully tense tone for this book.

Gold Medalist

Feral #5

Variant cover

Cover art by Trish Forstner & Tony Fleecs

This is the variant Todd chose for me and it is exceptional. The way the cover makes these animals look so… feral… with the freaky shadows that make it look like a forest is beautiful. The bright sun in the background is a great contrast.
