EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of August 12

We are back with the EYG Favorite Comic Covers from this week. Being honest, this week’s covers were, at best, okay. None of them really jumped out at me. I did find three decent ones and a handful of pretty solid ones. That is okay. We have a returning cover artist and a couple of new ones.

Bronze Medalist

Jonny Quest #1

Variant Cover C

Cover art by Tom Raney

I picked this up off the rack today because I so liked the Space Ghost book from Dynamite. This was the only cover out of a bunch that was remaining. I liked this one a lot. The variant has some great action and excitement.

Silver Medalist

Amazing Spider-Man #55

Cover art by John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna & Marcio Menyz

Comic World owner Ben was checking my order out and he stopped at this issue saying that this was one of John Romita Jr.’s best recent covers. He said the cover was filled with action, emotion and that it was more than just a pic of the characters. He’s right. This is an excellent cover showing off Spidey’s determination and heroism.

Gold Medalist

Wonderland: Return to Madness #2

Cover art by Guillermo Fajardo

A brutal looking cover with bloody bodies all over the place on the cover of this new Zenescope book. It really gives a message about what to expect inside this book.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of August 5

Three medalists this week and they all come from the House of Ideas, Marvel Comics. I actually had a list of about six or so in the competition so it was a solid cover week.

Bronze Medalist

Incredible Hulk #15

Variant cover C

Cover art by Todd Nauck & Rachelle Rosenberg

Disco Dazzler cover! What more could you want than a sparkly Hulk on roller skates? Like most variant covers, this has zero to do with the story, but this cover was a ton of fun.

Silver Medalist

Avengers #17

Cover art by Joshua Cassara & GURU-eFX

Storm joins the Avengers and she is a major force on this Avengers cover. The lightning from her eyes is extremely dramatic and the colors of the cover are perfect for Ororo.

Gold Medalist

Uncanny X-Men #1

Cover art by David Marquez and Matthew Wilson

With all the relaunching X-Men books, Uncanny X-Men comes with the cover art featuring the hands of the members of the new team…each extremely distinctly X.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of July 29

Here we are for the EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week. Three Marvel Comics this week, one variant and one of, probably, the artist with the most medals this year so far.

Bronze Medalist

Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin #4

Cover Art by Paulo Siqueira & Rachelle Rosenberg

I do like white space. I also love the way the title is broken as Spidey and Proto-Goblin are falling down the cover.

Silver Medalist

The Immortal Thor #13

Cover art by Alex Ross

Alex Ross has been the most awarded medalist so far in 2024. This one is just a lot of fun with Thor and Hercules in an arm wrestling contest that does not seem to be too interesting for Thor.

Gold Medalist

What If Donald Duck Became Wolverine #1

Variant cover

Cover art by Peach Momoko

2024 Eisner Award winner Peach Momoko is awesome with the covers and this Donald/Wolverine mash up is so cute. It’s the standout cover of the new Disney/Marvel What If series.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of July 22

This week was a giant week of books, so there are a lot of choices for the best cover this week. Once again, there are two variant covers in the final three. One of which Todd selected for me and one that I beat him to.

Bronze Medalist

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1

40th Anniversary Variant

Cover art by Eric Talbot

The brand new TMNT book was one that I picked off the stand and I had a choice of three different covers. This was labeled as the 40th Anniversary Variant with Raphael inside a red spotlight. This cover is so bad ass and it went very well with this excellent story.

Silver Medalist

The Nice House By the Sea #1

Cover art by Nick Robles and Hayden Sherman

Another book that I pulled off the stand. This book from DC’s Black Label is a sequel to another Tynion book called The Nice House on the Lake and the cover with the burning building in the background with this person in front with a skull creates a powerfully tense tone for this book.

Gold Medalist

Feral #5

Variant cover

Cover art by Trish Forstner & Tony Fleecs

This is the variant Todd chose for me and it is exceptional. The way the cover makes these animals look so… feral… with the freaky shadows that make it look like a forest is beautiful. The bright sun in the background is a great contrast.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of July 15

It is that time once again to name our three medalists for the best covers of the week. There were some interesting covers this week, and I narrowed it down to our three. Two variant covers coming…

Bronze Medalist

The Immortal Thor Annual #1

Variant Cover-C cover

Cover art by Walter Simonson & Laura Martin

The legendary Walt Simonson, who wrote and drew one of the best runs of Thor’s comics, returned for one of the variant covers of this annual, which continued the Infinity Watch storyline. It is a classic.

Silver Medalist

Invincible Iron Man #20

Cover art by Kael Ngu

Iron Man and Emma Frost holding hands in their wrap up of their marriage. The cover represents how successful this marriage was for the plot with the armored hand of Iron Man and the diamond form of Emma. A fun design.

Gold Medalist

Namor #1

Variant Cover D

Cover Art by Alex Maleev

I love this cover. The awesome pic of Namor as he swims down into the water, with so much blue making the cover really stand out. The title of the book down at the bottom where Namor is swimming toward it. This is beautiful.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of July 8

Welcome back to EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week. I want to welcome anyone reading from the Comic World Newsletter. I offered my columns from EYG to Ben, the owner of Comic World to help get some more info into the newsletter about comics. We started last week with the newsletter and we will continue for the foreseeable future.

For anyone who has never seen this column before, I pick my favorite covers of any comic that I purchase this week. I do not include back issues, but if I picked up a late book, it would be eligible. I give out medals for Gold, Silver and Bronze places. It is completely my opinion.

So the favorite covers of the week.

Bronze Medalist

Kid Venom #1

Cover Art by Taigami &Richard Isanove

I don’t know much about this book as I have not read it yet, but the cover is extremely intriguing with the sider in the middle, Kid Venom’s creepy face and the imagery in the web behind him. It is a very busy, but fascinating cover.

Silver Medalist

Get Fury #3

Cover art by Dave Johnson

The image of Castle broken up with several pics from the book is a really cool way to show what is happening int he book. Add to the overall aesthetic the white behind Castle and the red title, well this is a lovely title for a brutal book.

Gold Medalist

Crocodile Black #3

Virgin Variant Cover

Cover Art by Gabriel Hardman

I typically am not a huge fan of the virgin variant covers, but there is no denying that this is a beautiful piece of art, with the focus on these crocodile boots, reflecting in the pool of water. The black and white coloring makes it all the more appealing.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

July 3, 2024

It is another week, and it is time for the Favorite Comic Covers of the Week. Now, there were several Marvel books that were not delivered to Comic World, so the choices this week are fewer. But I was able to pick out three winners.

Bronze Medalist

The Boy Wonder #3

Cover art by Juni Ba

I have been somewhat disappointed by this series so far, but I really liked this cover. In fact, #2 was in consideration for a medal too. This one with the red cover and the cool design of the characters truly stand out.

Silver Medalist

Public Domain #6

Cover art by Chip Zdarsky

The return of Chip Zdarsky’s Public Domain after a long interval is very welcome, and I did not know that Chip Zdarsky, who is one of my favorite writers working, could create a cover this cool.

Gold Medalist

Spider-Man Reign 2 #1

Variant cover C

Cover art by Leinil Francis Yu

What a compelling cover. And I like his hair much better than I did in the book itself. Older Spider-Man pulling his mask off looks cool.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of June 24

Welcome back to the EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week! Another strong week of covers through the BUNCH of books I bought.

Bronze Medalist

Universal Monsters Creature from the Black Lagoon #3

Cover art by Matthew Roberts & Dave Stewart

I believe this is the third cover from this comic that has earned a medal. Impressive since it has only had three issues in the series so far.

Silver Medalist

The Department of Truth #23

Cover art by Martin Simmonds

The Department of Truth returned after a long intermission. I love the look of the cover, featuring what appeared to be the Kennedys with the series’ typical blurred imagery.

Gold Medalist

The Spectacular Spider-Men #4

Cover art by Humberto Ramos & Edgar Delgado

As soon as I spotted this cover, I knew it was going to be gold medal winner this week. I love the visual with the glass shattering, breaking the fantasy worlds of our heroes. The light blue on the yellow background really makes this impressive.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of June 17

It is time to award the medals this week for the new comic covers. Now, usually, there is one book’s cover that jumps out and is the clear winner. However, this week, though there are several really good covers, there is no one cover that jumps out as the gold medalist. That meant that I had to go back and forth between the three choices.

Here are the medalists:

Bronze Medalist

The Immortal Thor #12

Cover art by Alex Ross

Alex Ross is back once again. He is most likely our cover artist of the year as he has won multiple medals this year. His work is always so epic and that fits the tone of Thor brilliantly.

Silver Medalist

Blow Away #3

Cover art by Annie Wu

I have typically loved the white on covers and this snow cover looks beautiful, with the blue tint around it. I also love the long shadow coming off the figure in the snow. This is a beauty of a cover.

Gold Medalist

The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos #10

Cover art by Nick Robles

The shades of blue on this cover really work well together with the two red circles on the goggles. I’m really not sure what the cover is showing, but I am excited to see what it is.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of June 10

Large week of comics this week. Another first this week.

TIE

Bronze Medalist(s)

Amazing Spider-Man: Blood Hunt #2

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Bjorn Barends

AND…

Something Epic #11

Cover Art by Szymon Kudranski

The first ever tie for third place because I just could not make up my mind. Two really great covers. ASM: Blood Hunt is a variant that I spotted on the rack and had to switch my regular copy with and the consistently excellent Something Epic continues to be a beautiful design.

Silver Medalist

The Deviant #6

Cover art by Joshua Hixson

A beautiful design on the cover of this Image book. The black background with the purple highlights of the character blowing smoke to the title. Just a wonderful looking title.

Gold Medalist

Transformers #9

Cover Art by Daniel Warren Johnson & Mike Spicer

Love this image of Optimus Prime holding the earth like Atlas from Greek mythology. The white in the background really makes the design pop. Love this.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of June 3

First week of summer vacation so I was able to spend all afternoon at Comic World and it was awesome.

Some fun covers this week too.

Bronze Medalist

Profane #1

Cover art by Javier Marchisio

I really like the way the face of the woman shows what is happening, almost in reflection. Profane is one of the new books from Boom!

Silver Medalist

Space Ghost #2

Foil Variant Cover E

Cover art by Francesco Mattina

This is a beautiful foil cover with Space Ghost smack in the middle of what looks like a asteroid field of some sort. Very artistic and lovely with the shiny foil.

Gold Medalist

Amazing Spider-Man #51

Cover Art by Ed McGuinness & Marco Menyz

The Sinister Six is front and center, behind the cool white outline of Spidey’s mask. This is a very creative and original cover showing all that might be in the issue.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

For Week of May 27

Good evening. We have just one school day left before the end of the school year. That really does not have anything to do with this article, but I am just excited about it.

Bronze Medalist

Black Panther: Blood Hunt #1

Cover Art by Andrea Sorrentino

The Blood Hunt crossover event has had some solid covers (even if they are selling some variants of a blood red cover only). This one was from Andrea Sorrentino who has done some great rt in other horror series, especially teaming up with Jeff Lemire. He has a great cover of vampire T’Challa.

Silver Medalist

Universal Monsters Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives #2

Cover art by Matthew Roberts & Dave Stewart

These Universal Monsters books from Image have solid cover art every week and it has a bunch of excellent Variants too. I love this one with the creature spying on what is going on in the shadow.

Gold Medalist

Spider-Boy #7

Variant Cover B

Cover Art by David Baldeón

I proclaimed to Todd that this was probably the winner this week, and sure enough, it secured the gold. Love this black and white variant with Spider-Boy in a black and white Venom-like costume. It is lovely.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of May 20

Welcome back to the Favorite Comic Covers of the Week here at EYG. This week is another first. Last week, we had three variant covers receive the three medals for the first time. This week there is another first. Two of the three medalists are the same comic, one with the regular cover, and one with a variant.

Here are this week’s finalists!

Bronze Medalist

Spider-Gwen: The Ghost Spider #1

Regular cover

Cover art by Mark Brooks

Gwen Stacy comes to 616 universe for good. And O.B. from Loki TV series is there. Lots of fun and a fun cover to boot.

Silver Medalist

Sam and Twitch Case Files #3

Cover Art by Jonathan Glapion

A clever and attractive cover with the frame of Sam Burke making up the cityscape. The red, black and touch of white made this an extremely intriguing cover and gives you a look inside what the story and character are about.

Gold Medalist

Spider-Gwen: The Ghost Spider #1

Variant Cover

Cover Art by Ernanda Souza

A beautiful foil cover, listed at the cover D. The gold and pink swirls behind Gwen really pop on the foil cover and you can never go wrong with the always awesome Spider-Gwen costume.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of May 13

It is that time again this week to give out some medals for the best covers from this week’s comic books. Interestingly enough, this week has three variant covers as our medal winners. Oh, and no Alex Ross this week…

Bronze Medalist

Doom #1

Variant cover

Cover Art by Adi Granov

This one became the Bronze Medalist by the skin of its figural teeth as this one held off Ultimate X-Men to take this prize. The imposing nature of Dr. Doom in close up dominates the cover and stands out like a boss.

Silver Medalist

X-Men Forever #4

Variant Cover

Cover art by Jim Rugg

A beautiful painted looking cover with Jean in her Phoenix outfit, having the fiery bird land on her arm. And it is lovely. It is compelling of a piece of art.

Gold Medalist

Ice Cream Man #39

Variant Cover

Cover art by Jeffrey Alan Love

Ice Cream Man typically has some frightening horror covers and this one is creepy as heck. The Ice Cream Man with the arms coming from his back, in the black and white cover is really excellent.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of May 6

It is time again this week for the three medalist for best cover of the week. I must say that I eliminated one possible cover this week because I picked up a variant version of The Creature of the Black Lagoon Lives #1 which I really loved. But since this was actually released a few weeks ago, I decided to not count this one as a comic cover medalist. The original cover (Cover A) did place in the medal round prior so it is not like it comes out empty handed. Call this an honorable mention.

Otherwise, we had several comics in the running this week. There were some really cool covers that did not place in the top three. It was two independent books and one Marvel. And the Marvel cover artist has been a medalist several times already.

Bronze Medalist

Ain’t No Grave #1

Image Comics

Cover art by Jorge Corona

A new Western series written by Skottie Young. The cover has some wonderful Western imagery blended together.

Silver Medalist

Crocodile Black #1

Boom! Studios

Cover art by Andrea Sorrentino

New book from Boom! Studios has a very compelling cover. The guy on the bench with that alligator behind him is cool, but I loved the red highlights down on the ground around the body. Is it blood? Maybe, it looks awesome though.

Gold Medalist

Fantastic Four #20

Marvel Comics

Cover art by Alex Ross

EYG Hall of Famer Alex Ross earns yet another medal this week with the great FF cover that is not only beautifully drawn but tells a fun story with Ben and Johnny. What is going on here? I don’t know, but I am excited to find out and that means the cover does its job well.
