EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

December 26

This is the final EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week for 2024 as next Wednesday’s NEW COMIC BOOK DAY is January 1st. And since it was the last week, of course there were about eight books in the contention for these three medals.

Shout outs to the runners-up that did not make the medal round: The Creeping Below #2, Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #3, Hello Darkness #6, Sabretooth: The Dead Don’t Talk #1, and Metamorpho #1.

The final medalists for 2024 are…

Bronze Medalist

X-Men #9

Cover art by Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, & Marte Gracia

What a cool use of the Wolverine claws, showing him facing off with Psylocke. The claws almost pop off the page.

Silver Medalist

Absolute Wonder Woman #3

Hayden Sherman & Jordie Bellaire

Boy does Wonder Woman look bad ass. The grey background looks awesome and the red symbol stands out wonderfully.

Gold Medalist

Redcoat #8

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Brad Walker & Brad Anderson

This variant cover is soooo cool with the red background and the way Simon Pure’s coat blended right into the background. Then, the big ass gun is a great example of perspective. I picked this off the stand today, replacing the cover A that I had in my pull box. This is the final gold medalist of 2024. Congrats!

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of 12/18/24

We have a couple of more weeks in 2024, and we have already named the cover of the year and the cover artists of the year. Congrats to Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood #2 (Variant) and Alex Ross respectively.

That means that this week’s medalists are the old too late for the date. They will just have to settle for medalist presented this week.

Bronze Medalist

Plastic Man No More #4

Cover art by Alex Lins & Marcelo Maiolo

The Plastic Man series has had some excellent covers. The way he is melting is a very distinct look. The reflection of the timer in his goggles are very intriguing too. Close in to his face is very compelling too.

Silver Medalist

Parliament of Rooks #1

Variant Cover B

Cover Art by Abigail Jill Harding

This new book from Ablaze is a beautiful cover in black and white. Black and white is not used as often in cover art, but this is so wonderful with the creepy birds and some kind of creature behind the man on the stairs. It’s a beauty.

Gold Medalist

House of Slaughter #28

Cover art by Jorge Fornes

Broken glass is a very compelling image and the colors are fabulous. There is just so much to look at on this cover and it does not feel like a typical House of Slaughter book. I noticed this one immediately, and knew it would be this week’s gold medalist.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of 12/9

It is Friday night and my usual Wednesday night post of the comic cover of the week is finally out. Yes, there was more difficulties with the shipment from Comic World, as well as several other shops in the area. The shipment did not arrive until today so I was able to get the books tonight (except for the DC books, which were on time…Transformers too oddly).

With the holidays, I am sure that is a big part of the issue with the delivery, so I would not be surprised to see this happen a few more times in December.

However, be on the lookout for the special Year in Review Favorite Comic Cover of the Year, which is coming soon. We will present Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for both the best regular covers and the best variant covers. Then, we will name the best cover of the year. That is coming soon.

Here are this week’s medalist…

Bronze Medalist

The Terminator #3

Variant cover C

Cover art by Cat Staggs

Quick glance made me think this was Dr. Doom. I can see now that the Terminator is in some leaves. So maybe Predator? I like the green surrounding.

Silver Medalist

Scarlet Witch #7

Cover art by Russell Dauterman

Oooh, spooky looking Wanda image on the cover. I love the colors across this cover. The colors really make this cover pop.

Gold Medalist

Uncanny X-Men #7

Cover art by David Marquez & Matthew Wilson

You can never go wrong with two teams of X-Men facing off with each other. Love how this looks.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week Take Two

Dec. 12

Surprise. A second Favorite Cover of the Week post. As you know, the Wednesday order at Comic World only included DC books. I got a call from Todd today saying that “the new phone books are here!” quoting The Jerk, of course. The remaining part of the missing order arrived and I went down to pick them up.

Because of that, I am going to do a second group of medalists with these books.

Bronze Medalist

The Exorcism at 1600 Penn #2

Cover art by Vanesa Del Ray

Looks creepy as can be as a Presidential family portrait has a special shadowy hand crawls across the top of the pic, near George Washington. This has been such a successful book when it comes to cover art.

Silver Medalist

All-New Venom #1

Cover art by Iban Coello

You can never go wrong with some golden foil. The brand new Venom gets the special cover treatment with this lovely gold foil. Even his webbing looks to be golden too. Too bad the gold foil only got the silver medal.

Gold Medalist

The Art of Something is Killing the Children Companion

Cover art by Werther Dell’Edera

Is it ironic or expected that a book of art from Something is Killing the Children gets the gold medal for its cover? Either way, this is a sensational cover featuring Erica Slaughter coming out of the darkness. The art inside is beautiful too.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of December 2

Well, this was an easy week to pick the medal winners.

See, I got to Comic World today and a huge section of the shipment was missing. Everything from Diamond was not delivered. Okay, apparently, there was an attempt at a delivery with a holiday driver that turned out very badly.

Making a long story short, I only wound up with four books this week. Two weeks ago I had over 40. If the Marvel, Image, Boom etc. don’t come til next week, I dread the pile for next week.

Until then, we have two DC books and one from IPI Comics as the medalists this week.

Bronze Medalist

Sherlock Holmes: The Dark Detective #2

Cover art by Dave Elsey

This is a really creepy cover with Sherlock looking out a dark window. He sure seems to be a dark detective.

Silver Medalist

Two-Face #1

Cover art by Baldemar Rivas

I picked this one up off the rack because I did not have very many books this week. This is a cool cover with the focus on the coin being flipped. Again, I love the white background with the red of his face and title.

Gold Medalist

Absolute Superman #2

Cover art by Rafa Sandoval & Ulises Arreola

The cool new Absolute Superman looks great and the Peacemakers all around him make a great counter. The cover creates a great bit of what is going to happen. Looks excellent.

EYG Favorite Comic Book Covers of the Week

Week of November 25

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving tomorrow. Here are the holiday medalists this week. It was a lesser week than last week, but still I had several issues with great covers.

Bronze Medalist

West Coast Avengers #1

Cover art by Ben Harvey

The return of the West Coast Avengers features the new team including Iron Man, Spider Woman, War machine, Firestar and… Ultron? The great background shows the west coast life. It’s a lovely cover for a new, big-time team.

Silver Medalist

Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #4

Cover art by Michael Walsh

Another great cover from the Universal Monsters run. I love the green with the tannish background. This is a very striking cover that wraps up this enjoyable comic.

Gold Medalist

Hyde Street #2

Cover art by Ivan Reis & Danny Miki with Brad Anderson

The new horror book from the Ghost Machine imprint has a beautiful imagery with fire all around these characters from the book. There are some scary images inside that fiery cover as well if you look closely.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of November 9

Monster week! I got over 40 books this week and I had to pick out a bunch of potential medalists from this pile. I had to narrow down double digits of books to the three medal winners.

Bronze Medalist

Space Ghost #7

Cover art by Francesco Mattina

Dynamite’s Space Ghost series has had a ton of great covers. Of course, when you have 18 covers, your odds sort of increases. Of course, this is still a wonderful cover with Space Ghost kicking some butt.

Silver Medalist

The Immortal Thor #17

Cover Art by Alex Ross

EYG Hall of Famer Alex Ross is back in the medals. He has been one of the biggest cover artist of the year so far. The Grey Gargoyle fighting with Thor with some beautiful purple and pink colors exploding from the page.

Gold Medalist

Dead Eyes: The Empty Frames #3

Cover art by John McCrea

I love the design of the character and the background. Again, I do love some white in the background and then the Dutch angle of the background makes things even more uncomfortable with the scary looking Dead Eyes. Great cover.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of November 11

Mid-November and we have a new crop of medalists. When we reach December and have the Year in Review, I will be totaling up these points to determine who the comic cover artist of the year. I will also be picking the best comic cover of the year. That will be coming in December. Meanwhile, here are this week’s covers.

Bronze Medalist

The Mammoth #5

Cover art by Arjuna Susini

The scary, white creatures around the characters are a stark difference and the color of the characters and the title pops off the cover.

Silver Medalist

The Spectacular Spider-Man #9

Variant Cover

Cover art by Josemaria Casanovas

A fun Kraven the Hunter cover trying to catch the Spider is a wonderfully excellent variant cover. I love the blue tint on the cover of this issue.

Gold Medalist

Uncanny X-Men #5

Cover art by David Marquez & Matthew Wilson

Funny enough, Todd had pulled a variant cover of Uncanny X-Men#5 for me, but I saw this cover and loved it, so I switched them. Gambit looks tremendous, cornered with a bunch of cats all around him. This has been a big year for Gambit and this cover fits right in with that.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of November 4

A very difficult week is brightened by a bunch of new comics. Unlike last week where the books were all of the independent variety, this week all medalists are from DC and Marvel.

Bronze Medalist

Absolute Superman #1

Rafa Sandoval & Ulises Arreola

The first of two DC books is the brand new Absolute Superman. The Absolute books have been good so far and this gives us an indication of the power and the capability of our new Kryptonian. Striding through the wheat fields of …Kansas? I think. Looks great.

Silver Medalist

Plastic Man No More #3

Cover art by Alex Lins & Marcelo Maiolo

The new Plastic Man series has won a medal for each issue, I believe. I love this one that makes me think of Doctor Strangelove with Plastic Man wrapped around the bomb. Of course, the bomb is more than just a bomb.

Gold Medalist

Kahhori: Reshaper of Worlds #1

Cover art by Afua Richardson

The Marvel debut of the original character that appeared in What If…? season two is here and the cover is beautiful. Kahhori looks as she did in What If, but the background is lovely as she moves through the woods.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of October 28

Busy, busy night. World Series. Finale of Agatha All Along. And, of course, the Favorite covers of theweek.

This week, we have three variant covers winning the medals. Todd did a great job picking out the covers for my box this week (but don’t tell him!)

Bronze Medalist

Redcoat #7

Variant Cover B

Cover art by German Peralta

Such a fun cover with Simon Pure laying upon a pile of bones and skeletons. It is a good character cover as we see Simon, who is as old as these skeletons, just kicking back and relaxing.

Silver Medalist

Feral #7

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Trish Forstner & Tony Fleece

What an attractive and fascinating cover. The bright light behind the cat head is excellent with the black color in the back of the cover.

Gold Medalist

Namor #4

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Alessandro Cappuccio

What a beautiful and regal image of Namor beneath the water, the light shining from above. Sharks swimming around the top of the page. Love the contradiction of the light at the top and the darkness at the cover’s bottom.

Three variant covers that show the quality of artists out there right now.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of 10/21

Big week this week. I literally went through my pile of comics just now and I picked out nine books as potential medalist this week. A great week of covers.

It is one of those weeks where there are no Marvel or DC in the cover medalists. Unbelievably, two of the places are taken up by IDW books. That has got to be a first.

Medalists this week:

Bronze Medalist

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #3

Cover art by Rafael Albuquerque

This new Jason Aaron written TMNT series has been epic so far and their covers have been great. What an image with (I’m guessing) Leonardo walking away from his sword with his mask wrapped around it. Absolutely gorgeous cover.

Silver Medalist

The Exorcism at 1600 Penn #1

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Jock

What an amazing variant cover to this series that just came out of nowhere. I love the red and the black mixed with the demon-like creature and the Presidential seal. This Jock variant is extremely hot!

Gold Medalist

Hello Darkness #4

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Jenny Frison

What an amazing cover. We have seen the close up on eyes before, but the skull reflection in the eye and the single tear running from the eye is just astounding. The title of the book down in the lower corner allows the art to dominate the cover. This is breath-taking.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

Week of October 14

So, I am a little later today because of parent/teacher conferences today, plus Agatha All Along episode six…and the Dodgers are on. So I am getting to this right now.

Bronze Medalist

Grim #20

Cover art by Flaviano

A creepy cover with that big scythe behind makes this cover stand out really well. The dark red and black work well together…as will the next cover.

Silver Medalist

The Department of Truth #26

Cover art by Martin Simmonds

What a great cover with the singer on the cover and the black and red coloring forming the familiar Xs in the background. This one stands out for fans of this book.

Gold Medalist

Christopher Chaos Halloween Special #1

Cover art David Talaski

The blue signifies Christopher Chaos, and the lightning and the electricity creates a cool image of Christopher Chaos charging up a jack o’ lantern. This is really an attractive cover.

EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week

The week of October 7

Good evening to all. It is time to award some medals! This week we have three separate companies in the places. I should throw out a honorable mention this week to Exceptional X-Men #2. I have a special soft spot for all-white backgrounds on covers and this book nearly tickled my heart enough to earn a medal. Just came up short though.

Bronze Medalist

Seance in the Asylum #1.

Cover art by Andrea Mutti.

A very eerie cover with the ghosts appearing behind someone at the table. The idea of the book had intrigued me and this cover is very striking, making me wonder what it was going to feature.

Silver Medalist

Geiger #7

Cover art by Gary Frank & Brad Anderson

Something about a three-eyed zebra that just makes a cover pop. I also love the color int he background. It makes this cover very attractive, it should make someone stop and take a closer look at the book, and isn’t that the main job of cover art?

Gold Medalist

Fantastic Four #26

Cover art by Joshua Cassara & Dean White

The Fantastic Four has had a very good year for comic covers, but this is the first time this year that they earned a medal without it being Alex Ross. The imagery of Reed and Johnny struggling to keep from drowning in a bunch of blood is an amazing visual and really solidified the gold medal this week.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of September 30

Welcome back to the EYG Favorite Comic Cover of the Week. It is a busy night (Agatha All Along is on!) and we’ll just jump into this.

Bronze Medalist

Daredevil #14

Cover art by John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna, and Richard Isanove

What a dramatic cover this was. The imagery of the DD mask being held up in the lightning storm with the rain coming down… excellent.

Silver Medalist

Plastic Man No More #2

Cover art by Alex Lins & Marcelo Maiolo

Plastic Man, trying to hold himself together, makes this an extremely attractive and intriguing cover.

Gold Medalist

Hyde Street #1

Cover art by Ivan Reis, Danny Miki, and Brad Anderson

This is a cool looking new series from the Ghost Machine imprint from Image. The purple color of his face with the glowing green of the glasses just makes this stand out.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

Week of September 23

It’s NEW COMIC BOOK DAY so it is time for the comic covers of the week!

Where as last week, I mentioned that I did not think it was the best week ever for cover art. There was nothing terrible, mind you, but nothing really knocked my socks off. Well, this week was significantly stronger as I had to choose from a possible list of seven books.

Here we go….

Bronze Medalist

Sherlock Holmes: The Dark Detective #1

Cover art by Dave Elsey

I am a fan of Sherlock Holmes and this cover gives us a new look at the iconic gentleman detective. The chair, the background, the newspaper. Everything is so interesting that it works for Sherlock.

Silver Medalist

Hello Darkness #3

Cover art by Paolo Rivera

Talk about a compelling cover. What could this possibly be showing? The lovely naked woman with the blood running down her arm and the title carefully covering anything inappropriate.

Gold Medalist

Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood #2

Cover art by Mitsuhiro Arita

This actually came out last week, but I got the A cover. Todd insisted that this was a beautiful cover and he is 100% right. This is a beautiful piece of art and it deserves this spot on the list.
