EYG Comic Cavalcade #157

June 13

Happy Friday the 13th to all of the horror movie fans out there. It has been awhile since I was able to get the EYG Comic Cavalcade out on a Friday, but summer’s here and some extra reading time is available.

I also have a brand new computer chair that I put together (with only some swear words) last night. It is nice and comfy as I type this week’s Cavalcade post.

Books this week:

Death of the Silver Surfer #1. “Chapter 1: Here” Written by Greg Pak and art by Sumit Kumar. Cover art was done by Dike Ruan. As readers of the Comic Cavalcade know, I am not much of a fan of alternate future stories and this is a new one from Marvel. However, this book, written by Greg Pak, who I do like a great deal, is really decent. I was very engaged when I was reading it and I think this will be one of those future stories that will work for me.

Star Hunters #1-7. This is a group of seven books, the full series, that Todd made me buy. JK. He did recommend it. I have not actually read the full series, just skimming the first issue a bit, but I am happy to have it. Issue one had cover price of $0.35 which jumps up to $0.50 by the final issue.

Robin & Batman: Jason Todd #1. Written by Jeff Lemire with art and cover art by Dustin Nguyen. Jeff Lemire is the reason I picked up this number one, and I am very pleased that I did so because it is an exceptional story involving the eventually tragic Robin, Jason Todd. I have always been a fan of Robin and, while Jason Todd is not a personal fav, this book takes that character into a new level.

Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1. “Marvel Girl“. Written by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly with art by Rod Reis. Ms. Marvel and Legion insert themselves into the Dark Phoenix Saga after being in the recruitment of the new X-Men in the last issue. I am not sure what this Ms. Marvel group of books is meant to do, but the stories have been fine.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #9. “The Way of the Rotted Rat.” Written by Jason Aaron and art by Juan Ferreyra. Cover art was done by Jorge Fornes. With Donny behind bars, the remaining Turtles try to keep from killing each other in an attempt to save their brother. Things are not going great for them.

Lost Fantasy #2. “Book One: A World Beneath.” Created by Curt Pries & Luca Casalanguida. A new hunter comes into play while Henry fights for his life. Lost Fantasy has been a great read so far and the ‘giant size” regular book is awesome. More books should provide more pages of story than what they have been doing recently.

Nightwing #126. “By the Book- Finale: Bad Cop/Good Cop.” Written by Dan Watters and art by Francesco Francavilla. Cover art was done by Adriano Lucas. I have been a fan of Nightwing since his debut in Teen Titans, and Dick Grayson prior to that as Robin. I decided to give Nightwing a chance and grabbed this issue off the shelf. Of course, it was a finale of a story arc, but even with that, the story was understandable and interesting.

Something is Killing the Children #42. “All Her Monsters Part Two” Written by James Tynion IV and illustrated and cover art by Werther Dell’edera. I also picked up cover B variant with art by Tyler Boss (Gold Medalist) which was a glow-in-the-dark cover. Erica is back as we continue to see into the past of the young monster slayer.

Far Down Below #3. Written by Chris Condon and art by Gege Schall. Cover art was done by Jacob Phillips. Brian, Jeff and Brian’s grandfather continue their trek beneath the surface of the earth and find all kinds of dangers and obstacles. And they found someone else!

The New Avengers #1. Written by Sam Humphries and art by Tony Lima. Cover art was done by Stephen Segovia & Rain Beredo. The New Avengers … or The Thunderbolts! Bucky and Black Widow are on a mission and they need to find some “team members.” They start off with Laura Kinney Wolverine and Namor. More to come.

Trinity: Daughter of Wonder Woman #1. “Crisis on Infinite Corgis.” Written by Tom King and art and cover art by Belen Ortega. This was a fun, little time travel story with Trinity along with a couple of other versions of her from different times, are out to retrieve a group of time traveling corgis. Weird book, but always fun thanks to Tom King.

Avengers Academy Assemble #1. Written by Anthony Oliveira and art by Carlos Lopez and KJ Diaz. Steven Byrne did the cover art. This looks like it is collecting the Avengers Academy: Marvel’s Voices Infinity Comic #1-6, which I believe is on the Marvel Unlimited digital series. This is my preferred way to read comics, with the floppy copy. I do like a lot of these young characters and I was a fan of the old Avengers Academy books, so this was fun.

By the way Todd, that is not Squirrel Girl. It is Molly Hayes.

Runaways #1. Written by Rainbow Rowell and art by Elena Casagrande. Cover art by Stephanie Hans. I also picked up a variant cover by Elena Casagrande with a wrap-around cover of the original Runaways. I was a fan of the Runaways and Doombot was one of my favorite characters so with Dr. Doom running the world, it was just a matter of time before he tried to reclaim his property.

One World Under Doom #5. Written by Ryan North and art by R.B. Silva. Ben Harvey did the cover art. Doom and the Avengers find themselves on the same side against the dread Dormammu. Of course, this is something that the manipulative Doom will take advantage of as he groomed his reputation and image as a world wide savior.

Geiger #15. Written by Geoff Johns and art by Gary Frank. Cover art was done by Gary Frank & Brad Anderson. The battle between the Glowing People comes to an explosive finish in this issue. Geiger continues to be high quality in the Ghost Machine imprint.

Spider-Girl #1. Written by Torunn Grønbekk and with art by Andre Risso. Variant cover B art was done by Peach Momoko. From the pages of Spider-Boy, we get the new heroine who had teamed up with Bullseye to fight in a tournament. Here she has to face Vermin.

Amazing Spider-Man Giant Size #1. Four separate Spidey stories written by Kevin Smith, Al Ewing, Chip Zdarsky and Mitsuyasu Sakai. The four artists involved were Giuseppe Camuncoli, Mark Buckingham, Cafu & Gerardo Sandoval. Spidey is out looking for a fix for his torn costume, he meets Wyn from G.O.D.S., and they introduce the new character Rapid, who can slow down time.

Conan the Barbarian #21. “Slaves of the Magi” Written by Grim Jim Zub and art by Ferocious Fernando Dagnino. Cover art was done by Dan Panosian. Another book I grabbed off the stands to give a try. I used to collect the Conan books that were recently at Marvel and I thought I would try this Titan book. It was fairly decent. Certainly looked great.

New Champions #6. Written by Steve Foxe and art by Ruairi Coleman. Cover art was done by Gleb Melnikov & Arthur Hesli. The young New Champions team up with the Avengers in a battle against a new Super-Skrull. Oh, and Moon Knight shows up and scares Moon Squire.

Exceptional X-Men #10. Written by Eve L. Ewing and art by Carmen Carnero & Federica Mancin. Cover art was done by Carmen Carnero & Nolan Woodard. Kitty, Emma and Iceman are here to help their trainees, but Axo has to come to the rescue instead. I thought this might be the end of this series, but I am glad it looks like it is moving on.

Jumpscare #3, 4. Written by Cullen Bunn and art and cover art by Danny Luckert. I finally got Jumpscare #3, which was a suddenly difficult book to find. Todd was able to find it in Des Moines (although he then tried to hid it from me…. ). I was starting to believe that issue three was just a urban legend. I do enjoy this book and I am glad I am currently caught up.

Absolute Batman #9. “Abomination Part One” Written by Scott Snyder and art by Nick Dragotta. Cover art by Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin. The Absolute Universe debut of Bane. And Bane is badass!

Eddie Brock: Carnage #5. Written by Charles Soule and art by Juanan Ramirez. Cover art was done by Iban Coello & Frank D’Armata. Carnage and Eddie are having their internal struggle for control as Eddie is trying to help a crashed plane’s passengers. Misty Knight may be in over her head.

Phoenix #12. Written by Stephanie Phillips and art by Roi Mercado. Cover art was done by Lucas Werneck (Bronze Medalist). This issue spends most of the time with Sarah Grey, in both present day and flashbacks. It sets her up as a possible mutant, but Cable does not seem too pleased.

Batman: Dark Patterns #7. “Pareidolia” Written by Dan Watters and art and cover art by Hayden Sherman. The new arc of the Dark Patterns series kicks off here and it continues to be an exceptional take on an early Batman.

Star Wars #2. “Smoke” Written by Alex Segura and art and cover art by Phil Noto. Luke takes off, leaving Rynn behind and winds up in search of a Jedi artifact called the Crown of Verity. This issue featured Luke’s travels and his confrontations as he searched for the McGuffin.

Magik #6. “The Road Back Home.” Written by Ashley Allen and art by Jesus Hervas. Cover art was done by Pablo Villalobos. Trouble brewing in Limbo, so Illyana meets up with Madelyne Pryor to cause sparks to fly between the two powerful Limbo masters.

Other Books this week: Frankenstein New World: The Sea Forever #4, The Loose Ends #4, Huge Detective #5, Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma #3, Marvel United: A Pride Special #1, Marvel Rivals Ignite #1, and Deadpool/Wolverine #6.

Quick Hits: Todd had gotten a group of Superman Unlimited #1 issues signed by Dan Slott through Midtown Comics and I was able to get one of those. It was cool because I swear, Dan Slott is the only comic book creator whose signature is readable. Optimist Prime is still in some bad shape in Transformers #21. EC Blood Type #1 was another off the stands book to try out. It wasn’t bad even though there are a surplus of vampire stories right now. Blue Palo Verde #1 is also new and I had never heard of it before, but I feel as if Mad Cave deserves the benefit of the doubt right now and I did love this book. Falling in Love on the Path to Hell #8 is one of the least regularly released books currently coming out that is not from DSTLRY. No Black Panther in Ultimate Black Panther#17, but it might have been better with the focus on Killmonger and Okoye. Sister Imperator #4 closes that series out. I am not sure if I will miss it. W0rldtr33 #15 has the silver medalist this week for Fernando Blanco. Hello Darkness #11 continues to have great covers too and a potpourri of horror short stories. Finally Peach Momoko’s Ultimate X-Men #16 is here and is still the most original Ultimate books available.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #156

June 8

Good day. It is time for the EYG Comic Cavalcade.

This past Wednesday was the first NEW COMIC BOOK DAY of the summer months so I got to spend the afternoon at Comic World, reading my books and waiting for the late arriving Diamond order to be divvied out. Good news, Comic World is going to be finally done with Diamond. Here’s hopin’ that Penguin will be more consistent than Diamond has been the last six months or so.

Books this week:

X-Men #17. “Visitor” Written by Jed MacKay and art by Ryan Stegman. Ryan Stegman & Marte Gracia did the cover art. Piper’s twin vs. Magneto (inside and controlling a Sentinel). At least it appeared as if they were able to find Kid Omega and that he was not dead.

Mark Spears Monsters #5. Written, illustrated and cover art by Mark Spears (TIED- Bronze Medalist). Monsters continues to be an amazing series of cover art as well as some of the best interior art around. Mark Spears has been a star this year and this book, which has ties to Monster Squad, is highly entertaining.

Amazing Spider-Man #5. Written by Joe Kelly with art by Pepe Larraz. Cover A art was done by Pepe Larraz & Marte Gracia. I do love it when the cover art incorporates the title in some creative manner. I also picked up cover C, whose art was done by Joelle Jones & Rachelle Rodriguez. The poisoned Peter arc wrapped up as Spidey faces off with the Hobgoblin.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 #1. Written by Brian Buccellato and art by Christian Duce. Christian Duce & Luis Guerrero did the cover art. This is a sequel to the previous mini-series featuring an alternate world where the JL fought the big two monsters. Things are back with more trouble for the Justice League.

The Patchwork Girl of Oz #5. Adapted and illustrated by Otis Frampton. I was upset by the end of this book because there was a note inside saying that they were going to have 15 more issues to tell this story, but from now on, it would be only available digitally, or in a trade paperback. I had enjoyed this series through the first five issues and this made me very disappointed. I do not like digital comics. I want to hold it in my hand (as the book called it … a floppy). This made me mad and disappointed.

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #1. Written by Deniz Camp & Cody Ziglar with art by Jonas Scharf. Cover art (foil version) done by Kael Ngu. I grabbed this lovely foil cover featuring Miles Morales fighting the Spot. Miles finds himself in the Ultimate universe. Is he home? What does this mean for the 616?

Be Not Afraid #1. Written by Jude Ellison S. Doyle and illustrated by Lisandro Estherren. Cover art was done by Reiko Murakami. I grabbed both the A cover and the virgin cover for this new Boom! Studios book. This is a dark horror story dealing with a family and a frightening spirit out for something dastardly.

Imperial #1. “One” Written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Iban Coello & Federico Vicentini. Cover art was done by Marco Checchetto & Marte Gracia. Jonathan Hickman brings his sweeping epic to the cosmic world of Marvel. Lots of characters involved including Nova, Star Lord, Hulk, Gladiator and the Shi’ar, the Skrulls & Kree, just to name a few. It feels like another future story, but I was interested so far.

All-New Venom #7. Written by Al Ewing and art by Carlos Gomez. Adam Kubert & Laura martin did the cover art. All-New Venom has to face off with Agent Venom, so it is MJ vs. Flash Thompson. Plus, there is more with Rick Jones who still thinks Robbie is the new Venom.

Marvel Knights: The World to Come #1. “Part One: The Death of Kings” Created by Joe Quesada and Christopher Priest. Cover art by Joe Quesada. We have another possible future story, and this one has created a huge wave of controversy as they have introduced a white man as the new Black Panther. Oh my….. As if Quesada already doesn’t receive enough hate for his Marvel stuff.

Return of the Living Dead #4. Written by S.A. Check & James Kuhoric with art by Andrea Arcari. Cover art was done by Mark Spears (Gold Medalist). This was an explosive finale for this remake of the Return of the Living Dead. This was a fun zombie series from American Mythology Productions.

Daredevil #22. “Rites of Reconciliation.” Part Three. Written by Saladin Ahmed and penciled by Jose Luis Soares and Carlos Nieto. Black armor Daredevil discovered the answer to the dangerous spores that were being sent around by our villain. Too bad Joel and Ellie did not know about it.

Immortal Thor #24. “The Death of the Immortal Thor.” Written by Al Ewing and art by Jon Bazaldua. Cover art was done by Alex Ross (Silver Medalist). It appeared that Thor had made it through the huge battle against the prophecy. Thor expected to die in a heroic sacrifice. He did not. Everyone is happy. Oh… and then Loki stabbed him in the back.

The Terminator #8. Written by Declan Shalvey and art by Colin Craker. Cover art was by Declan Shalvey (Tied- Bronze Medalist). Kind of a review of what has happened so far in the Terminator. It is a very original way to showcase what has gone before.

Laura Kinney: Wolverine #7. “My So-Called Perfect Life, part 2” Written by Erica Schultz and art by Giada Belviso. Elena Casagrande & Edgar Delgado did the cover art. Laura broke out of the “perfect life” she had been trapped in to face off with the Badoon.

Storm #9. “Sinister Schemes of the Stars and Stripes Part Two” Written by Murewa Ayodele with art by Lucas Werneck. Cover art by Mateus Manhanini. Storm is in trouble with the federal government for her aid to Professor X in escaping custody. Jennifer Walters is on the case.

The Slasher’s Apprentice #2. Written by Justin Richards and art and cover art by Val Halvorson. Riley makes a pitch to the Hopton Valley Killer (which she will call HVK, because it is easier to say) to join him and learn from him on how to be a serial killer. This Mad Cave book feels very warped so far.

Pop Kill #4. Story by Dave Johnson and Jimmy Palmiotti with art by Juan Santacruz. Cover art is by Dave Johnson. This is the final issue of the soda pop wars as the twins face off over the formula that would have forever fizz. Dina is struck in the middle.

Ultimate Wolverine #6. Written by Chris Condon and guest art by Alex Lins. Cover art was done by Alessandro Cappuccio & Frank Martin. Logan looks as if he has been snapped out of the mind control forced on him as the Winter Soldier. He is the best at what he does…

Other books this week: Buried Long, Long Ago #2, The Moon is Following Us #10, The Secret Six #4, Plague House #3 and Let This One Be a Devil #4

Quick Hits: Mad Cave comics has another new number one that I picked up. It is called Endless Night #1 and it was okay. I have really liked the Mad Cave books recently and I think it is worth taking a look at them. Godzilla Heist #5 is out this weekend. There are a bunch of Godzilla comics. Almost as many as Batman. I picked up the Dynamite Comics book Giant-Size Wacky Races #1. That was a silly book. I always liked Mumbly from the Laff-A-Lympics from my childhood. I think this was a one shot but I doubt that will be a regular book on my list if it continues. Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider #14 has Gwen still with King Loki in space. I would like her to get back to earth soon. I do enjoy the Dark Horse book You Never Heard of Me #4. There is one more book in that series. Absolute Superman #8 starts a new story arc and brings Superman into the orbit of Lois Lane and Jimmy Olson. Absolute Green Lantern #3 has some fun things going down with our Lanterns. I am very intrigued by Hal Jordan and his dark hand. The final issue of the series of The Atom Project #6 featured an end to the troubles of the different Atoms.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

June 5

This is another big week of books with a bunch of choices. I’m not even including the beautiful variant C cover for Pop Kill #4 by J. Scott Campbell because, though I did buy it, it was not for me. It would have definitely been in the conversation.

Because this is the second week with tough decisions, I have instituted a new section called the Also-Rans. These are the covers that were in consideration, but did not quite earn a medalists.

Also-Rans: Amazing Spider-Man #5 (Cover A), Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #1 (Foil Variant), Be Not Afraid #1 (Virgin Cover), and Amazing Spider-Man #5 (D Cover)

We also have a second time ever TIE for the bronze. I just can not choose between the final two so…

Medalists…

Tie!

Bronze Medalists

The Terminator #8

Cover art by Declan Shalvey

I love this cover with the different grey squares as the Terminator skull is in the background. The Terminator covers have been solid during this run, but this is the first to medal.

Tie!

Mark Spears Monsters #5

Variant Cover C

Cover art by Mark Spears

Mark Spears continues his domination of the Favorite Covers of the Week with yet another awesome Monsters cover. The werewolf is wonderfully scary and I love the Todd McFarlane homage.

Silver Medalist

The Immortal Thor #24

Cover art by Alex Ross

This is a powerful image of Thor, done by the one and only, EYG Hall of Famer, Alex Ross. The lightning coming off Thor and mixing with the title is fabulous. Love this.

Gold Medalist

Return of the Living Dead #4

Cover art by Mark Spears

Brains! They are tasty… but not near as tasty as this new zombie cover from Mark Spears. There are so many details on his painting work that something as played out as zombies have an all-new feel to it.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #155

June 1

Summer is officially here as I am out of school and on break. I have the June Swoon 4 underway starting today, and more Dodgers baseball later tonight, but I am going to fit the EYG Comic Cavalcade into the mix.

I wanted to give a shout out to Pleasant View Comics on eBay. They had a special recently where they offered a “buy two, get two free” offer. Plus, they had only a $1.99 shipping cost and if you know anything about eBay, you know sometimes the sellers have some extremely high shipping costs. I have had one book and the shipping is listed as $6.99 or even more.

Any way, I had done two separate orders from Pleasant View Comics, one with some Power Pack back issues and the other with some back issues of Marvel Classic Comics. Without me asking, they took the two separate orders and combined them into one and refunded me one of the $1.99 shipping costs I had already paid. They shipped me a package of eight comics for just $1.99, and the packaging was well done. It arrived this week and I was very happy with their service. These are the type of sellers that give eBay a good name. Just thought I’d share…

Books this week:

Giant Sized X-Men #1. “The Mutant That Walks Like a Man” Written by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly with art by Adam Kubert. Cover art was done by Adam Kubert & Laura Martin. There was a backup story called “Revelations: Superior” written by Al Ewing with art by Sara Pichelli as well. Ms. Marvel goes time hopping to the moment when the new X-Men faced off with Krakoa. I’m not sure how this is supposed to affect things or if this is just a What If type of situation. Honestly, the story was okay, but that was about it.

Uncanny X-Men #15. “As Close to Evil.” Written by Gail Simone and art by David Marquez. Cover art was done by David Marquez & Matthew Wilson. The Dark Artery storyline continues here with The X-Men and the Outliers confronted Lady Henrietta, who wanted Deathdream to take her place as guardian of the city of the dead, Penumbra.

Hyde Street #6. Written by Geoff Johns and art by Francis Portela. Cover art was done by Ivan Reis & Danny Miki with Brad Anderson. Mrs. Goodbody and Pranky have their own conflict while Mister X-Ray lured a group from a bus to the movies. Some seriously weird stuff going down on Hyde Street.

Pinupocalypse #3. Written, drawn and cover art by Andrew Tarusov. Must be the week for horror comics to go to the movies as Roxy and Foxy take refuge in the theater. Of course, the zombies apparently like movies too. More satirical fun with this series.

Ultimate Spider-Man #17. Written by Jonathan Hickman and art by David Messina. Marco Checchetto & Matthew Wilson did the cover art. Harry is back and he is contacting Uncle Ben and Jonah. Another issue of Ultimate Spider-Man where we barely see Peter Parker. Yet it is very compelling. That tells you how strong the supporting cast is for Spicer-Man.

Predator Versus Spider-Man #2. Written by Benjamin Percy and penciled by Marcelo Ferreira. Cover art by Paulo Siqueira & Yen Nitro. Kraven is hunting the Predator as Spidey is in pursuit. Unfortunately, there seems to be a battalion of Predators on their way. Another surprisingly satisfying mash up.

You’ll Do Bad Things #3. Written by Tyler Boss and art by Adriano Turtulici. Tyler Boss did the cover art. I loved this cover by Tyler Boss and I almost picked it for the medal this week, but there were so many choices that this one fell to the side. Still is an impressive cover and an engaging book.

Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #2. Written by Charles Soule & Steve McNiven with art and cover art by Steve McNiven. Elektra showed up in this future story with Matt Murdock, who had just had his powers return for a short time.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers #1. Written by David Pepose and art by Eman Casallos. Cover art was done by Mark Spears. Here is another new Dynamite Comics series with a character that has no reason to be as good as it is. Captain Planet always just seemed like a joke of a character to me, but this was really solid.

Feral #13. “Cats and Dogs.” Written by Tony Fleecs and art by Trish Forstner and Tone Rodriguez. Variant cover B art by Tony Fleecs and Allen Passalaqua (Gold Medalist). This is a fantastic variant cover. The book does horror themed variant covers have been fun, but this issue, Feral the 13th, was the best yet.

Universal Monsters: The Mummy #3. Written and drawn by Faith Erin Hicks with a cover art done by Hicks and Lee Loughridge (Silver Medalist). More background with Helen and Ankh-es-en-Amun. Creepy love stories.

The Goddamn Tragedy #1. Written by Chris Condon and illustrated and cover art by Shawn Kuruneru. I have been waiting for this one shot for awhile because of the awesome title of this book. I also love Chris Condon and his writing style worked well for this genre. A family story based loosely on the Donner party? Yes, please. I’ll take that any day.

West Coast Avengers #7. Written by Gerry Duggan and art by Danny Kim. Cover art was done by Ben Harvey. Simon Williams returned this week to confront Killerwatt’s adoption of the Wonder Man name. They did it in a different way that surprised me. West Coast Avengers has been excellent so far with this variation of the book.

Mr. Terrific: Year One #1. “Back to the Beginning.” Written by Al Letson and art by Valentine De Landro. Valentine De Landro and Marissa Louis did the cover art. I am exited about this book as I have not known much about Mr. Terrific and a “Day One” story will work well for me.

New Champions #5. Written by Steve Foxe and art by Ivan Fiorelli. Ricky Yagawa did the variant cover art. I have enjoyed this group of characters combining into the New Champions. I would like more of a story for them than what we have gotten so far.

The Department of Truth #30. Written by James Tynion IV and art and cover art by Martin Simmonds. Will Lee Harvey Oswald make the country great again? The last scene of this issue opens up the possibilities to an amazing story. Department of Truth has been really a great book consistently.

Avengers #26. “Masters of Evil” Part Two. Written by Jed MacKay and art by Andrea Broccardo. Cover art was done by Valerio Schiti and Federico Blee. Captain America stands alone against the new Masters of Evil and Sam shows off his ability.

Justice League Unlimited #7. “Rise of Gorilla Grodd.” Written by Mark Waid and art by Travis Moore. Cover art was done by Dan Mora. This story arc has felt up and down to me and this one is another bit of a down. I am not sure I am vibing with what they are doing here. I will say that the Justice League that shows up on the last page of this issue makes me curious.

Infinity Watch #5. Written by Derek Landy and art by Ruairi Coleman. Variant cover art by Inhyuk Lee. I’m not sure if I enjoyed the finale of this short series as much as I had thought I might. I enjoyed these characters, but I am not sure if what happened with them is what I would be happy happening. I hope we get some more of the Infinity Watch somewhere down the road.

Magik #5. “Fate Unbound.” Written by Ashley Allen and drawn by German Peralta. Cover art was done by J. Scott Campbell & Tanya Lenoux. This book felt weird at the beginning…as if we missed out on something big between the end of issue four and the beginning of five.

Minor Arcana #7. “Wheel of Fortune: Part One-Temperance” Written by Jeff Lemire and illustrated by Letizia Cadonici. Cover art was done by Jeff Lemire. I found this issue’s relationship between Theresa and Officer Brad to be extremely well written and it helped to develop these two characters to a point where I wanted more from them. It feels as if there is a big arc coming for this book and I am all in as I am a big fan of Jeff Lemire’s work.

Kill Train #5. Written by Olivia Cuartero-Briggs and art by Martina Niosi of Outclass Studio. Skylar Patridge did the cover art. This fun Mad Cave series ended with this issue as Vanessa and Kay fought to escape from the Kill Train. Vanessa certainly ended up as a bad ass in this series.

Uncanny Valley #9. Written by Tony Fleecs and art by Dave Wachter. The variant cover B art was done by Tony Fleecs. Oliver is in real trouble, but fear not, his mom is on the way, as she is reclaiming her cartoon side. This has been a remarkably creative book so far and it looks like this is a penultimate issue of the series.

Crush Depth #3. Written by David “DB” Andry and Tim Daniel with art and cover art by Alex Sanchez. Told in flashback format, this gives us even more background on the characters and the horrors that they have found themselves caught in. There is some horrifying imagery in this book that really help create a tone.

Hornsby & Halo #7. Storytellers are Peter J. Tomasi & Peter Snejbjerg. Cover art by Peter Snejbjerg & John Kalisz. Zach and Rose are going out of their way to try and deny or avoid the information that they were presented last issue. Meanwhile horrifying things are going on around them.

G.I. Joe #7. Written by Joshua Williamson and art and variant cover art by Andrea Milana (Bronze Medalist). We get a Beach Head issue here and it was good. I love the die cut cover gimmick this book has as a variant.

The Last Boy #3. Written by Dan Panosian and illustrated by Alessio Avallone. Cover art was done by Dan Panosian. Peter pan’s problems in Neverland continue to grow as the boy still denies the death of Hook. The Phantom King is a creepy villain that Tinkerbell and the other fairies had to save Peter from. Wendy’s black and white arc continued as well with a bunch of kids and a pond.

Werewolf by Night: Red Band #10. Written by Jason Loo and penciled by Sergio Davila with the cover art done by E.M. Gist. This edition of Werewolf by Night comes to its close after a battle with Lilith. Sorcerer Supreme Victor Von Doom also makes a cameo as a Deus ex machina.

Who are the Power Pals?#3. Written by Duane Murray and art and cover art by Ahmed Raafat. The issue spends most of its time building a rift between our two main protagonists so that when trouble comes, they are separated. One must wonder why these tow completely different people have been friends for so long.

Other books this week: Venom: Original Sin #1, The Power Fantasy #9, Mommy Blog #1, Assorted Crisis Events #3, Rogue The Savage Land #5, Doom’s Division #3 and Darkwing Duck #4.

Quick Hits: I had an unexpected book in my box this week, but it is because Todd is taking care of me. Green Lantern #23 has a cool Mark Spears cover (even though it did not make the medals this week). I do love me some Mark Spears. Deadpool/Wolverine #5 was out this week with Cable guest starring. I do think I may have reached my limit with Deadpool and Wolverine team ups. Dark Honor #1 is new from Image and it is a sci-fi type book that needs another issue or two to see what I think of it. Dark Pyramid #3 took a truly bizarre turn this month. In the book, We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us #3, something weird is going on with Annalise. There is more to her story than what we have been told so far. Disney What If issues are back with What If…? Donald Duck Became Iron Man. These Disney What If books all feel fairly similar. Metamorpho #6 breaks the fourth wall to beg the audience to write to DC to get more Metamorpho books. Weird and fairly brazen. Absolute Wonder Woman#8 and Absolute Martian Manhunter #3 were both kind of meh this week. And speaking of meh, Void Rivals #19 missed out on momentum from last issue and instead went to the planet of Junkion. They did it without “Dare to Be Stupid” playing in the background. If you know, you know. Eddie Brock: Carnage #4 puts Eddie through the ringer and Spider-Boy#19 sees Spider-Boy disappointing Spider-Man, setting up the final Spider-Boy issue next month.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

May 29, 2025

Welcome to the first official EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week on Thursday. I decided to wait until Thursdays to pick up the books from both Comic World and In This Issue before doling out the medals. I picked an exceptional cover week to star the switch to Thursdays. I picked out a possible ten books with awesome covers that we in the running. I also ignored the Captain Planet #1 I got in the mail from eBay today. It is a lovely Mark Spears cover.

Speaking of Mark Spears, our current leader for the cover artist of the year had a book this week, Green Lantern #23, that did not make the cut for a medal. This is one of the few Mark Spears covers that I got on time that has not placed somewhere in the top three. It speaks to the quality of covers this week.

And it looks as if there are three Image Comic entries in the medalists this week. Two of them are variants.

Let’s go…

Bronze Medalist

G.I. Joe #7

Incentive Wraparound Variant H

Cover art by Andrea Milana

This may seem like a gimmick, but I really was drawn to this cover, with the partial head of Beachhead die cut and wrapped around the book. This was awesome.

Silver Medalist

Universal Monsters The Mummy #3

Cover art by Faith Erin Hicks & Lee Loughlin

I saw this cover a few weeks ago in passing. As soon as I saw it, I thought this had a chance to win a medal. I just love this compelling look at this character and the sides to her. The bloody hand is all the more riveting.

Gold Medalist

Feral #13

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Tony Fleecs & Allen Passalaqua

This is easily the best of the horror-themed variant covers for Feral, and calling it Feral the 13th was also a stroke of genius. I love the creativity and cleverness of this design and it fit so perfectly in what they were trying to do. I did not mean to do the pun (purr-fectly).

EYG Comic Cavalcade #153

May 18, 2025

The weekly challenge that is Diamond continued this week. This week there was a shipment made to Comic World, but it was missing a few books. It is better than not having any Marvel books at all, like prior week. I have picked up several of the missing books, variant versions basically, in Bettendorf. I do not know if the missing box from last week will ever show up at Comic World, but I have it covered, I believe.

I keep waiting for Mark Spears Monsters #4 books that I ordered from Keenspot directly to be delivered. I sent a message to the company and they responded with a nice email, but I am getting anxious waiting for them to get here.

Books this week:

Look Out #1. By Dan Baillie and Tim Bradstreet. This is an illustrated novella from AWA and Vertigo Entertainment. This was something I picked up on eBay and I did not expect what it was. It is not a graphic novel. It is more of a story with illustrations than anything else. It is a lovely book though.

Red Hulk #4. “Enemies of the State.” Written by Benjamin Percy and art by Geoff Shaw. Cover art was done by Geoff Shaw & Marte Gracia. Thunderbolt Ross and Deathlok continue to try and make their way through Latveria in an attempt to “recharge” the Red Hulk.

Exquisite Corpses #1. Written by James Tynion IV and art and cover art by Michael Walsh. I also have a variant cover done by Jenny Frison. I love this new book from James Tynion IV. The secret group that runs the world is getting together to determine which of them will now run the organization. They do it with a competition between killers that feels like a Hunger Games type of situation. This one was truly fun.

Phoenix #11. Written by Stephanie Phillips and art by Roi Mercado. Cover art was done by Lucas Werneck. This starts a new arc with Jean Grey and her supposedly deceased sister Sara. Cable is involved as well. There is something weird going on.

Godzilla vs. X-Men #1. “A World That Hates and Fears Them.” Written by Fabian Nicieza and art is done by Emilio Laiso. Cover art was done by Tony Daniel & Marcelo Maiolo. The running stories of Godzilla vs. the Marvel Universe comes to the X-Men. Secret… they wind up working together eventually. That feels like a continuous theme among these Godzilla books. Good to see Sunfire.

Daredevil #21. “Rites of Reconciliation Part Two” Written by Saladin Ahmed and penciled by Jose Luis Soares & Carlos Nieto. Variant cover art by Alex Ross. This was one of the missing books this week that I grabbed a variant cover of. It is the Timeless variant with Alex Ross and this cover featured a lovely picture of Iron Fist on the virgin cover. Meanwhile Daredevil feels as if he has stepped into the world of The Last of Us with all of the plants around.

Immortal Thor #23. “Come at the King.” Written by Al Ewing and art by Jan Bazaldua. Variant cover C art by Giuseppe Camuncoli. Another book that was missing in the Diamond order this week and this variant cover is the Impossible Man variant as Thor looks like the Impossible Man. Thor is having plenty of troubles as he battled the god Kemur.

Phantom Road #12. “The Horrormen Part 2 of 5” Written by Jeff Lemire and art and cover art done by Gabriel H. Walta. The second arc of this Image series continues with Agents Weaver and Harold continue their pursuit of Patrick Hanover. The agents are finding themselves in the other side.

Batman: Dark Pattern #6. “Voice of the Tower Part 3” Written by Dan Watters and art and cover art by Hayden Sherman. The storyline with Scarface ends with this issue as the building burns out. I was not sure that this Batman series was going to continue, but it does look as if it will start a new storyline next month.

Silverhawks #3-4. Written by Ed Brisson and art by George Kambadais. Issue three variant cover art was done by James Stokoe and issue four was done by Mark Spears (Gold Medalist). Some brutality going down in these issues as the Silverhawks veteran heroes do not come out well.

Transformers #20. Written by Daniel Warren Johnson and art by Jorge Corona. Cover art was done by Daniel Warren Johnson & Mike Spicer. Starscream is repaired by Megatron. Starscream thought Megatron was going to kill him, but he did not. However, the newly repaired Starscream found out that Megatron was not just being kind.

Wolverine #9.The Long Road Home.” Written by Saladin Ahmed and art by Javier Pina. Cover art was done by Martin Coccolo & Bryan Valenza. I liked this book this week as Logan faced off with Department H in an unexpected manner. Plus, Logan is on his way to face off with… Victor.

Absolute Batman #8. “Absolute Zero.” Written by Scott Snyder and art by Marcos Martin. Cover art was done by Nick Dragotta & Frank Martin. This issue featuring Mister Freeze really has some horror aspects to it and it is a cool issue (ignore the pun).

Zdarsky Comic News #11. The newest news pamphlet from Chip Zdarsky includes an interview with Cody Ziglar and the continued war against “books being so big they crush your ‘boys’ when you try to read them in bed.” This still reminds me of the old Marvel Age book.

Green Hornet Miss Fury #5. Co-written by Alex Segura & Henry Barajas with art by Federico Sorressa. Variant cover B art by Jae Lee & June Chung. This short series ended with a shocking conclusion. It also does not feel as if the story is done. I guess we’ll see if there is more in the future.

Spectacular Spider-Men #15. “Gone Girl, Found Family.” Written by Greg Weisman and art by Andres Genolet. Cover art was done by Mark Bagley & Edgar Delgado (Silver Medalist). This is the final issue of this Spider-man team-up book with a great party at the coffee shop. I will miss this intriguing book.

Supergirl #1. “Misadventures in Midvale Part 1” Written, art and cover art by Sophie Campbell. Supergirl gets her own new DC book, but I did not find myself engaged by this comic. I did like the look of the book.

I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer #2. Written by Doug Wagner and art by Daniel Hillyard. Cover art was done by Daniel Hillyard & Michelle Madsen. Rennie goes out of her way to aid her … “friend.” It surprises her too. I do enjoy this unlikely series. We have had several serial killer books lately and this is one of the better ones.

Space Ghost #12. Written by David Pepose and art by Jonathan Lau. Francesco Mattina did the cover art. After last issue’s inglorious defeat, Space Ghost returns and put the hurt on the Council of Doom.

Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens #1. Written by Frank Tieri and art and cover art by Angel Hernandez. This is a fun way to use Godzilla… with space aliens involved. I am not sure if I am going to continue to grab these issues, but this number one was fun, if nothing else.

Red Sonja vs. the Army of Darkness #2. Written by Tim Seely and art by Jim Terry. Variant cover B art by Tim Seely. Red Sonja and Ash Williams are in search of the Book of the Necronomicon. Along the way they have to fight a unicorn. I am worried that Ash is going to get his sexual harassment kicked out of him by Red Sonja.

Past Time #2. Written by Joe Harris and art by Russell Olson. Mark Chiarello did the cover art. This cover art is a beautiful one and it would have definitely been a medalist had I not gotten it until after the Favorite Comic Covers of the Week came out.

Dark Regards #1. Written by Dave Hill and art and cover art by Artyom Topilin. Dark Regards is a new book from Oni Press that tells the mostly true story of the internet viral sensation from the early 2000s when he invented his black metal band. I was not engaged in this book either, but I may give it another chance before issue two comes out.

When I Lay My Vengeance Upon Thee #4. Written by Gus Moreno and illustrated and cover art by Jakub Rebelka. Father Barrera and Stygian are having some issues but the problems are loading up. Barrera has had a tragic backstory and it is being manipulated by the demon.

Jumpscare #2. Written by Cullen Bunn and art and cover art by Danny Luckert. The new superhero based on horror movies, Jumpscare, has her sister kidnapped. Does she care about that at all? She certainly does not want her parents to think she does. Jumpscare has been a really fun new book from Dark Horse.

Behemoth #4. Written by Grant Sputore & Ryan Engle and art by Jay Martin. This was the final issue of this excellent mini series from Dark Horse. It was a great conclusion too as I loved the way the story played out.

One World Under Doom #4. “Dormammu vs. Doom.” Written by Ryan North and art by R.B. Silva. Ben Harvey did the cover art. The title of this issue absolutely is the perfect one for this issue. It is Dormammu trying to take advantage of Dr. Doom. These two are basically the only two characters in this book. And Doom has not come to bargain.

Uncanny X-Men #14. “An Infectious World” Written by Gail Simone and the art is done by David Marquez. David Marquez & Matthew Wilson did the cover art. Rogue punches a dragon. We learn more about Lady Henrietta. Gail Simone has written some compelling stuff and this is building to have some exciting New Orleans action.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #33. “God War Part II” Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Marco Renna. Federico Vicentini & Neeraj Menon did the cover art. Miles has found himself deep inside the trouble as the war between Anansi and Ares is underway. Miles gets to recruit his team for the battle. Who does he choose? Hint, there is no Peter Parker or Steve Rogers (why not, Miles!!!)

Geiger #14. Written by Geoff Johns and art by Gary Frank. Gary Frank & Brad Anderson did the cover art. The Glowing Man battles the Glowing Woman. Geiger continues to be one of the best books of the Ghost Machine books.

X-Factor #10. “Survivor’s Guild.” Written by Mark Russell and art by Bob Quinn. Cover art was done by Greg Land & Frank D’Armata. The X-Factor series is over after this issue as it seemed as if Havok and Polaris finally got back together. Angel came back and made up with everyone too.

The Toxic Avenger Pinup Special #1. I picked this up just for fun. It is a book from Ahoy Comics that featured several cool full pages of artwork as well as a couple of stories starring Toxie. This was another cover that might have been a medalist had I gotten it earlier.

Thunderbolts: Doomstrike #4. “My Dinner with Doom.” Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly with art by Tommaso Bianchi. Leinil Francis & Romulo Fajardo Jr. did the cover art. Doctor Doom faced off with Bucky Barnes.

Other books this week: Energon Universe #1, Grimm #22, Ultimate X-Men #15, Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse #1, The All-New, All-Deadly Gwenpool #1, Ultimate Black Panther #16, Worldtr33 #14, and The Hive #4.

A few other thoughts: I also grabbed some cool covers of books that I already have. This included the fairly hot Pop Kill Cover B book. I had picked up this book twice for other people as I had purchased the cover A of it. I was pleased that it was still available. I got the Mark Spears Space Quest #1 book too which is a beautiful piece of art. I grabbed the A cover of Amazing Spider-Man #3. I grabbed Ripperland #4 which ended with this issue. I have Psylocke #7 with the aforementioned Impossible variant cover as Psylocke is portrayed as the Impossible Man. Amadeus Cho #1 was another of the missing books that I picked up this weekend. I like this cover with Amadeus flexing. Hello Darkness #10 always seem to have an awesome cover.

May 11

Happy Mother’s Day to everyone out there. I hope you all have expressed to your mothers how important they are to you, if you are still able to do so.

Well, we are back with the troubles from Diamond. Comic World has not received its Diamond shipment from last week as of writing which means that I will not have a full Comic Cavalcade this week. I picked up a few variant editions of some of the books I am missing, but the full supply of Marvel, Boom Studios, and Dynamite books will be missing from this week’s post. It has been a real pain in the butt for me and everyone else connected with Comic World that this Diamond delivery thing continues to be a problem.

Books this week:

Los Monstrous #1. Script by James Robinson and art by Jesus Merino. Variant cover C art was done by Marcos Martin (Silver Medalist). I love this new Dark Horse book. I think this is in the Diamond order so I picked up a variant cover in Bettendorf. I really enjoyed this book with a city of monsters told in a noir style. Two things that I have always enjoyed mixed together.

Star Wars #1. “Out of the Darkness.” Written by Alex Segura and art and cover art by Phil Noto. I also grabbed a copy of the Logo Variant too. I have not historically purchased Star Wars books, but this new story featuring Luke, Han and Leia was intriguing and I wanted to give it a chance. I did like what I saw.

Far Down Below #2. Written by Chris Condon and art done by Gege Schall. Jacob Phillips did the cover art. This Mad Cave book has been excellent so far. The kids continue their path into the earth, joined by an older man they met along the way. Grandpa?

Amazing Spider-Man #3. Written by Joe Kelly and art by Pepe Larraz. Variant cover B art by Rose Besch. Another of the rare Marvel books this week as I picked up this variant cover to read the story. Peter is going through it as his memory of his childhood with Uncle Ben and Aunt May being manipulated. Oh, and there is Hobgoblin.

Lady Baltimore: The Daughter of Medusa #1. Story by Mike Mignola & Christopher Golden and art by Bridgit Connell. Cover art was done by Abigail Larson. This was an interesting book from Dark Horse. I got the definite impression that this was not the first time that Lady Baltimore had appeared in a book. Throwing Gorgons in the mix was cool.

Grommets #7. Written by Rick Remender & Brian Posehn with art and cover art by Brett Parson. Finally. I picked up the earlier issues as a bunch last year and then this final issue took FOREVER to get here. I enjoyed this series quite a bit, but I can’t deny that the final issue was not as impactful because of how long it took to get it. Still enjoyed it.

Two-Face #6. “Closing Arguments” Written by Christian Ward and art by Fabio Veras. Cover art was done by Baldemar Rivas (Gold Medalist). This is the final issue of the mini series featuring Harvey Dent and his psychosis. I have enjoyed the entire series, but I have to say that this conclusion felt a little lacking. It just felt as if there was no progression of the character of Harvey/Two-Face, ending where he always was.

The Atom Project #5. “Combustion” Written by Ryan Parrott and John Ridley with art and cover art by Mike Perkins. The group of villains they are referring to Inferno are here trying to get control of Captain Atom. Of course, it seems as if everyone is looking to control Captain Atom. Reveal of the Inferno group is a little underwhelming considering what is going on with the DC books lately.

Blood & Thunder #1. Written by Benito Cereno and art by E.J. Su. Cover art was done by E.J. Su & Msassyk. This is another fun and enjoyable new book from Image Comics. You have a future world with a bounty hunter and her gun. And yes, the gun does speak. I really enjoyed this book tremendously.

Vanishing Point #1. Written by Mark Russell and art by Juan Doe. Cover art was done by Christian Ward. Vanishing Point is an anthology series. We’ve seen a bunch of these in the horror comic genre, but this is science fiction instead. The first issue deals with a man mining for minerals in space. Great story, and I am looking forward to seeing some sci-fi stories from Mad Cave.

Pop Kill #3. Written by Dave Johnson & Jimmy Palmiotti with art by Juan Santacruz. Dave Johnson did the cover art. The cola wars are taking it to another level in pursuit of the formula for the never ending fizz. Cola wars mixed with James Bond type action.

Godzilla Heist #3. Story by Van Jensen and art by Kelsey Ramsey. Bob Eggleton did the cover art. Godzilla is being used as a distraction for a huge robbery, but it is more than that. It is not just a robbery. There might be a giant robotic lizard involved too.

Plague House #2. Written by Michael W. Conrad and illustrated and cover art by Dave Chisolm. This is an Oni Press book and it is a disturbing one. There are several images in this book that are really unsettling.

Space Quest #1. Written by Joe Casey and art by Sebastian Piriz. Variant cover C art by Derek Chew. Another variant cover that I picked up because the main cover (by Mark Spears, no less) is hopefully in that missing Diamond order. A team up of Dynamite Comics characters Space Ghost and Jonny Quest sounds like a lot of fun.

We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us #2. Written by Matthew Rosenberg and art by Stefano Landini. This is not just a girl and her robot. There is a new group of villains in this issue that are on a Zoom call. There are some intriguing mysteries in this book.

Don’t Run With Scissors #1. Written by Francesca Perillo and art and cover art by Stefano Cardoselli (Bronze Medalist). New series from Keenspot, Don’t Run With Scissors is a wildly original new book. I love the look of the art inside, which only helps to build the mood of the story. This is a book to watch.

Black Canary: Best of the Best #6. “Round Six.” Written by Tom King and art and cover art by Ryan Sook. This Black Canary series has been one of my favorite DC books and I feel like the wrap up of this series was very strong. I have had some issues with some of these DC books and their finales, but Black Canary brings the fight.

Absolute Superman #7. “A Mind is a Terrible Thing.” Written by Jason Aaron and art by Carmine Di Giandomenico. Cover art was done by Rafa Sandoval & Ulises Arreola. Talk about creepy. No Superman this issue as we feature the Absolute version of Brainiac. And it is horrifying.

Absolute Green Lantern #2. “The Abin Sur.” Written by Al Ewing and art and cover art by Jahnoy Lindsay. I have enjoyed these Absolute books and I really liked this issue of Green Lantern. It reveals the horrible fate of poor Guy Gardner. I also must say that the dark arm on Hal Jordan is one of the most intriguing aspects of the book so far.

Free Planet #1. Written by Aubrey Sitterson and art and cover art by Jed Dougherty. This is a new Image Comic that I was excited to read. However, I was disappointed by it. The first half of the book was just a whole bunch of exposition and a ton of new characters. By the time anything got going, I had checked out of this book.

The Chamberlains #1. Written by Ruben Romero & Casey Bowker. Cover art was done by Rob Prior. Another new book from Keenspot, this was unexpected. First, there was a page repeated in the comic. Exactly the same. I do not know if that was a misprint or purposeful. It did not seem to make sense so I assume it was just an error. Then, the book was suddenly a vampire book. Whoa, did not expect that.

Sam & Twitch Case Files #13. Written by Jordan Barel with Todd McFarlane and art by Thomas Nachlik. Cover art was done by Marco Failla. Things are looking really bad for Twitch. Not only is he under investigation for his shooting of a suspect, but he is also seeing things. Can Sam help him out?

Other books this week: The Moon is Following Us #9, Secret Six #3, Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma #2, and The Holy Roller #9.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #151

May 3

Happy Free Comic Book Day everyone!!!!

This is always one of the best days of the year for comic collectors like me. The comic companies put out free books to promote things they are going to release over the next year. Comic book shops set up special tables and give great sales to encourage people to purchase comic books.

It is important though for the customers to not only pick up the free comics, but also buy something in the shops. The comics are free for us, but not for the shops. It does cost the shops money to stock these books for us, so, if you have not yet gone for your free comics, make sure you get something else as a thank you for the shops for giving this excellent opportunity.

I picked up several vol. 1 Ghost Riders, a couple of Thanos books, a Chip Zdarsky written Jughead book, Weapon X-Men #3 (which I missed on New Comic Book Day), and an Amazing Spider-Man that I did not have yet. I also grabbed a book that I had never seen before. It was called Mildly Microwaved Pre-Pubescent Kung-Fu Gophers #1. It was so funny as it was clearly making fun of the TMNT. So I went up to the check out and showed it to the workers. They told me that it was a satire of the Turtles. I smiled. Yeah, I got that.

The Free Comics I picked up today included The Phantom #0, Black Mirror, Post Malone’s Big Rig #0, Will Eisner: A Comic Biography, Fantastic Four #1, Amazing Spider-Man/Ultimate Universe #1, Godzilla; New Heroes, Kanga-U, Mark Spears Monsters #0, Diablo, The Mighty-Nein Origins, Def Leppard’s Hysteria #0, IDW: Find Your New Fear, and Conan: Scourge of the Serpent.

Lots of great things coming in the world of comics.

Books this week:

Lost Fantasy #1. “Book One: A World Beneath.” Written by Curt Pires and art and cover art by Luca Casalanguida. My favorite new book of the week. Lost Fantasy has a cool concept and a bad ass final page. I was completely engaged with this issue when I read it this morning that I immediately sent a text to Todd saying that he needed to pick this new Image book up.

TVA #5. Written by Katharyn Blair and art by Pere Perez. Cover art was done by Pere Perez and GURU-eFX. A Scarlet Witch variant is here to cause more trouble for the erstwhile agents of the TVA. It was fun to see the characters from the Loki Disney + series in this Marvel comic. And anytime I can get more Miss Minutes is a good time.

Crush Depth #2. Written by David “DB” Andry and Tim Daniel with art and cover art by Alex Sanchez. This continues as a great new series by Mad Cave. Liana does not appear to be a heroic individual, but she may have to change if she hopes to survive under the water in the submarine that is filled with some kind of monster. Crush Depth has had two excellent issues and I am excited to see where it goes from here.

Pinupocalypse #2. Written , art and cover art by Andrew Tarusov. The newly created zombies are after Foxy and Roxy but it allowed Foxy to head back to her own house. I do not think I have ever seen a zombie surprise birthday party before. Only here. This is a fun new zombie series that turns the genre on its head.

Planet Death #0. Written by Derek Kolstad & Robert Venditti with art by Tomas Giorello. Tomas Giorello & Dave Stewart did the cover art. This is a opening issue of a series from the once again new company Bad Idea. I guess there is quite the rabbit hole of info on Bad Idea that I started to go down, but pulled myself out of. This book was cool and it was printed on the old comic newsprint. Apparently, the company is launching a new Planet Death series in July.

Fantastic Four #31. “The Fantastic Two.” Written by Ryan North and penciled by Cory Smith. Cover art was done by Joshua Cassara & Dean White. things aren’t looking good for the FF. It seems that since Ben has lost his powers because of Doom, the others are also losing their powers. So they have to try and get Ben all rocky again.

Red Sonja & the Army of Darkness #1. Written by Tim Seely and art by Jim Terry. Cover art by Mark Spears. I have always enjoyed Ash Williams from the Evil Dead franchise. I loved the TV show Ash vs. the Evil Dead. I have never thought much about Red Sonja. To be honest, I was more interested int he Mark Spears cover. I did like the book. Dynamite has been doing some good work with IPs that you wouldn’t expect. This is another one.

Mark Spears: Monsters #4. Written, illustrated and cover art by Mark Spears (Silver Medalist). I am not sure how this was delivered early, but I am glad it was. This book is solid monsters action every time out. It still has that Monster Squad vibe to it, clearly alluding to that series. The Wolfman’s howl in this issue is a perfect example.

Something is Killing the Children #41.All Her Monsters” Part One. Written by James Tynion IV and art by Werther Dell’Edera. I purchased cover A by Werther Dell’Edera and Virgin Cover D by Anwita Citriya (Gold Medalist). Erica Slaughter is back. After a bit of a break, Something is Killing the Children is back with more tales from Erica’s backstory. I have missed this series quite a bit and so I am thrilled that this series is back.

Godzilla vs. Spider-Man #1. Written by Joe Kelly and art by Nick Bradshaw. Variant cover F art by Jerry Ordway. It is Spidey’s turn to take on the King of Monsters. Mismatch you say? Yeah it is. But that is why we love Spider-Man. He never gives up. And what happens when Godzilla gets taken over by the Venom symbiote?

Ultimate Spider-Man #16. Written by Jonathan Hickman and art by Marco Checchetto. Cover art was done by Marco Checchetto & Matthew Wilson. Oh, big time twist this issue. Did not expect anything like what happened here. Bad things are happening for Peter (and Kraven, by the way).

The Patchwork Girl of Oz #4. Adapted, illustrated and cover art by Otis Frampton, based on the novel by L. Frank Baum. Scraps is here and she is wildly entertaining. Rhyming everywhere, Scraps feels like a real chaotic creation. This has been a lot of fun so far and the book is setting up the adventure to save the newly rocky Unc.

Green Hornet/Miss Fury #4. Co-written by Alex Segura & Henry Barajas with art by Federico Sorressa. Variant cover B art was done by Jae Lee & June Chung. Green Hornet vs. Kato? Can the heroes avoid all of the mind controlled innocents that are out to get them? Who knows, but this penultimate issue sets up a big time finale.

Nights #15. “Tricky Snakes and Ladders.” Written by Wyatt Kennedy and art and cover art by Luigi Formisano. Back cover art by Armand Luro. Victor’s vampire adventures continue as this series takes an even more fantastical turn.

Rogue: The Savage Land #4. Written by Tim Seely and art by Von Randal. Cover art was done by Kaare Andrews. Rogue, Magneto and Ka-Zar are on their mission, trying to stop a Savage Land war while their powers are sort of on the fritz. However, Magneto thinks he knows what is going on.. it’s Rogue’s doing. Huh?

Void Rivals #18. Written by Robert Kirkman and art and cover art by Lorenzo De Felici. I have been losing interest in Void Rivals over the last few issues, but this one brought everything back to the beginning as Darak and Solila are reunited, though maybe not in the best moment possible. I think these to being separated was a big reason I was losing interest in this book. I hope things get worked out.

World’s Finest Annual #1. “Chapter Three: Certain Doom.” Written by Christopher Cantwell with plot by Cantwell & Mark Waid with art by Dan McDaid. We are Yesterday moves on. Gorilla Grodd’s Legion of Doom is executing a plan dealing with time travel. It feels a bit convoluted and poor Cheetah.

The Rocketfellers #5. Written by Peter J. Tomasi with art and cover art by Francis Manapul. When Rae unexpectedly faints, the Rocketfellers rush her to the hospital. A group of mercs come to their home with plans. This left only the dog, Rex to handle the situation… and handle it he does. A shocking final page of the issue gives us a glance at an upcoming antagonist.

Thunderbolts Doomstrike #3. “No Unconquered Land” Written by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly and art was done by Tommaso Bianchi. Cover art was done by Leinil Francis Yu & Romulo Fajardo Jr. The new team of Thunderbolts take on the originals over Doom.

Human Fly #4. “Terror Tour” Written by Jason Franks and art and cover art by Jan Scherpenhuizen. The Human Fly has a tough issue… and he has a concussion. Mercury is here too fighting beside Fly.

Red Hulk #3. “Uncharted Territory.” Written by Benjamin Percy and art by Geoff Shaw. Cover art was done by Geoff Shaw & Marte Gracia. Thaddeus Ross, with Deathlok and and energized down Machine Man, is looking for a burst of energy to generate the Red Hulk. They are on their way to a nuclear plant, but Doom may have a different idea.

Hellhunters #5. Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and art by Adam Gorham. Cover art was done by Declan Shalvey. This demonic WWII series closes up with a fun episode. These heroes are very fun together in this book. I would be down with seeing more of this team. I mean, Bucky was picking his nose. This was great.

Kid Juggernaut #1. Written by Emily Kim and art by Minkyu Jung and Peter Nguyen. Cover art was done by Woo-Chul Lee. This adapted Marvel Voices issues with Kid Juggernaut. I thought this was a really engaging one shot and I am more excited about Kid Juggernaut than I ever was before this.

Who are the Power Pals #2. Written by Duane Murray and art and cover art by Ahmed Raafat. The second issue of this Dark Horse book continues the look at these characters of the Power Pals. I think this twosome is not being shown as a great pair. They are not necessarily likable and I think that is an interesting step in these characters’ development.

Killer Kobra #1. “The Hunt Begins Part 1 of 3” Written by Joe Brusha and artwork by Rodrigio Xavier. Cover art was done by Igor Vitorino & Ivan Nunes. I had never heard of this book before I saw it on the shelf in Bettendorf. It is from Zenescope and i had one thought… crossover with Man Goat and Bunnyman!!!

Doom Academy #3. Written by Mackenzie Cadenhead and artwork by Pasqual Ferry & Joao M.P. Lemos. Variant cover B art by Woo Chul Lee. Doyle, Shaylee and Scoop are trying to save Zoe who has been pulled into a book with fairy tale creatures. I loved Strange Academy and I think things are just as cool with them in Latveria.

The Question: All Along the Watchtower #6. “The Price.” Written by Alex Segura and art by Cian Tormey. Cover art was done by Tormey & Romulo Fajardo Jr. The six issue series drew to a finale with this issue as Renee Montoya, aka The Question, steps up to save the Justice League from the forces that have been assaulting the Watchtower in this series. I really enjoyed this book and I hope to see more of The Question in Justice League Unlimited.

You’ll Do Bad Things #2. Written by Tyler Boss with artwork by Adriano Turtulici. Cover art was done by Tyler Boss (Bronze Medalist). There are a bunch of independent comic books dealing with the idea of a serial killer (or multiple ones). This is another of those books, with Seth trying to move on from his police work and write a romance novel. I’m not sure that is going to happen.

NYX #10. Written by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly with artwork by Francesco Mortarino. Cover art was done by Sara Pichelli & Federico Blee. NYX ends with this issue, as Ms. Marvel, Laura and the others bring down Mojo. I am going to miss this group as I have enjoyed this series. I know Ms. Marvel is going to be at the center of some big X-Men issues moving forward, but I will miss her group of New York mutants.

Feral #12. “Up a Tree” Written by Tony Fleecs and art by Trish Forstner. Cover art was done by Tony Fleecs, Trish Forstner & Tone Rodriguez. The cats escaped the big confrontation last issue with the bear only to meet up with the cat Lucky and his pet dog. They all have an idea of a way to save themselves from the horrors of the outside… Pet City Supercenter!

Kill Train #4. Written by Olivia Cuartero-Briggs with artwork by Martina Niosi of Outclass Studio. Cover art was done by Skylar Patridge. This was another penultimate issue of a great series. Kill Train gave us an unexpected twist at the end of this issue that caught me off guard. This has been bloody and brutal and I love it.

The Slasher’s Apprentice #1. Written by Justin Richards and artwork and cover art by Val Halvorson. Here is yet another new Mad Cave book that is awesome and deals with a serial killer. This time, a slasher. Our main protagonist wants to be an apprentice at the learning tree of the Hopton Valley Killer.

Dark Pyramid #2. Written by Paul Tobin and artwork and cover art by PJ Holden. Becca is in search of her missing boyfriend, a podcaster who had fallen off a mountain and disappeared while recording his show. Becca has gotten help from Shailene but has come across some mysterious and frightening creatures.

Darkwing Duck #3. “Where Did Darkwing Learn Martial Arts?” Written by Daniel Kibblesmith and artwork by Ted Brandt and Ro Stein. Tad Stones did the cover art. This issue goes into Darkwing’s mysterious past and we find out that he was just like Po in Kung Fu Panda and Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange. Funny book.

Other books this week: Wolverine and Kitty Pryde #1, Godzilla vs. Los Angeles #1, Frankenstein: New World-The Sea of Forever #3, Parliament of Rooks #5, Doom’s Division #2, The Seasons #4, and Something Crawled Out #1-2.

Here I am with the 150th edition of the EYG Comic Cavalcade, which is quite the accomplishment, if I do say so. Since this has replaced the EYG Comic Catch-Up, the Cavalcade has been one of the most consistent posts we do on EYG.

This post requires that I read the books I get each week, the number of which has only grown over the last few years. I currently have two separate pull lists at two separate comic shops in two separate cities in opposite direction from my home in Maquoketa. Then, this write-up generally takes quite a while to write. I would guess that from first word to last picture, it takes around two hours to complete, and that is if I am not distracted by other things. Such as right now, I am trying to watch the first three Andor episodes while I do this. It is a distraction because of timing.

This column, and the previous Comic catch-Up, are the reason I got my collection in order and organized. I am very proud of that, and I am grateful for EYG.

Last week, I mentioned how I completed my Groo the Wanderer Marvel/Epic comic run. I completed another run this week, albeit considerably less impressive. I picked up issues #9 & 10 as well as #1 & 3 of the Zdarsky Comic News giving me all ten issues of the newsletter. It is not large, but it still does remind me of the old Marvel Age books that I loved. This newsletter from Zdarsky features more than just Marvel. They are fun, if not slight.

I also grabbed three more of the freebies from the Superman Day last weekend, including Jimmy Olson’s Supercyclopedia.

Here is the next 150 issues of EYG Comic Cavalcade.

This week’s books:

Amazing Spider-Man #2. Written by Joe Kelly and art by Pepe Larraz. Pepe Larraz & Marte Gracia did the cover art. Peter has been poisoned and flipped out, just like the Rhino did last issue. I am pleased with the new creative team and the current path Spidey is on in this new volume. A surprise return at the end is fascinating.

Blasfamous #1-3. Written and illustrated by Mirka Andolfo. I found these three issues in the back issues box of DSTLRY books that I had never heard about. I have always loved DSTLRY books and I was excited to see one that I obviously had missed. Unfortunately, this was not a story that caught my interest as most of this company’s books have done. It’s nice to have them though.

Out of Alcatraz #2. Written by Christopher Cantwell with art and cover art by Tyler Crook (Gold Medalist). I picked up a variant cover of this issue too which is pretty awesome as well. The Out of Alcatraz book from Oni Press has been engaging as well. I am never quite sure what is going to happen next and it does a great job of building some tension.

Falling in Love on the Path to Hell #7. “A Broken Clock.” Written by Gerry Duggan and art and cover art by Garry Brown. I had somehow missed this issue and it was tough to find. Thankfully, Todd was able to find one in Des Moines. This has been a fantastic series so far and I am hoping that this will continue on its excellent path.

Moonshine Bigfoot #1. Written by Mike Marlow and penciled and cover art by Steve Ellis. A new and extremely creative new book from Image features a sasquatch who had been left as a baby, raised by a couple of moonshiners. This book has a feel of The Dukes of Hazzard and Smokey and the Bandit, while throwing the fun use of cryptoids.

Universal Monsters: The Mummy #2. Written and art by Faith Erin Hicks and cover art by Hicks and Lee Loughridge. Helen is having memory flashes, and she is remembering a past life, one including Imhotep himself. The Universal Monsters run of books at Image have been excellent and The Mummy is telling a great story as well.

Assorted Crisis Events #2. Written by Deniz Camp and art and cover art by Eric Zawadzki. A shout out to colorist Jordie Belaire because the coloring of this issue makes this series stand out among a lot of other books. Doing something different really sets this aside from other anthology books that are being released right now.

Avengers #25. “Masters of Evil” part 1. Written by Jed MacKay and art by Valerio Schiti. Variant cover B art by Russell Dauterman. A brand new Masters of Evil is formed in this issue and I love them. The inclusion of Madcap in particular was cool.

New Champions #4. Written by Steve Foxe and art by Ivan Fiorelli. Cover art was done by Gleb Melnikov & Arthur Hesli. I do like this formation of new young heroes under the Champions label. This issue gives us the “secret origin of Gold Tiger.”

X-Men #15. “Twin.” Written by Jed MacKay with pencils by Ryan Stegman & CF Villa. Cover art was done by Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer & Marte Gracia. Piper Quinn’s twin, a twin that was never born, pulled itself out of her and began a rampage. The end of the issue saw the arrival of a new group of X-Men… huh?

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #5. Written by Christos Gage with art by Eric Gapstur. Cover art was done by Leonardo Romero. The final issue of this prequel series to the Disney + animated series wrapped up with Spider-Man getting some major victories against Silvio Manfredi and the Enforcers. He also had a funny way to hide the injuries he had sustained from Aunt May. Pratfall anyone?

One World Under Doom #3. “The Devil We Know.” Written by Ryan North and art by R.B. Silva. Ben Harvey did the cover art. A group of villains including Doc Ock, Arcade, Mysterio, the Goblin Queen, Baron Mordo and MODOK have joined the struggle against Doctor Doom. However, it looks like business is about to pick up as Dormammu jumps int the frey.

Predator Versus Spider-Man #1. Written by Benjamin Percy and penciled by Marcelo Ferreira. Cover art by Paulo Ferreira. I also picked up cover D by Marcelo Ferreira. Despite how much I love the character Spider-Man, I had not been looking forward to this series. Yet, after reading number one, I am in. It was brutal, scary and intense and I want more of it.

Green Lantern Dark #4. Written by Tate Brombal and art by Werther Dell’Edera. Cover art was done by Dell’Edera & Giovanna Niro. Quite a dark issue as it lives up to the title. Interesting takes on the characters of Beast Boy and Bat Wraith. This has been an excellent read each month and that is from someone who is not a big fan of Elseworlds stories.

G.I. Joe #6. Written by Joshua Williamson and art and cover art by Tom Reilly. Big confrontation between Duke and Cobra Commander. This issue does a great job of creating a rivalry between these two individuals and the groups behind them. It also continues building towards the GI Joe/Transformers crossover.

Hornsby & Halo #6. Storytellers are Peter J. Tomasi & Peter Snejbjerg. Peter Snejbjerg & John Kalisz did the cover art. Zach and Rose are taken to see where they came from… first to Hell and then to Heaven. And it shakes them to their core.

Werewolf by Night: Red Band #9. Written by Jason Loo and penciled by Sergio Davila. F.M. Gist did the art for the cover. This is brutal and bloody as Lilith’s plan to take advantage of Jack comes to its head. Things are getting scary with this book.

Eddie Brock: Carnage #3. Written by Charles Soule and art by Jesús Saiz. Cover art was done by Iban Coello & Frank D’Armata. Carnage takes on Sidewinder, and then, Carnage and Eddie brock have their own internal conflict.

Minor Arcana #6. Written and illustrated by Jeff Lemire. Cover art by Jeff Lemire. I also picked up the unlockable virgin variant cover by Laura Perez. Teresa and her mother got into yet another argument and Teresa prepared to leave. However, she wanted to apologize to her childhood friend first. Lots of things then happened.

Absolute Wonder Woman #7. “The Lady or the Tiger Part Two.” Written by Kelly Thompson and art by Mattia De Iulis. Cover art by Hayden Sherman & Jordie Bellaire. Diana’s trip into the Underworld to save Circe brings her into conflict with Hades and a struggle to answer an age-old riddle that had confounded her for years. This was a really well written story and I really enjoyed the inclusion of all of the Greek mythology in this book.

Magik #4. “Reunion.” Written by Ashley Allen and art by German Peralta. J. Scott Campbell & Tanya Lehoux did the cover art. Illyana and Danielle Moonstar are reunited from their best friends days with the New Mutants, but there are more issues between them than they care to admit.

Justice League Unlimited #6. “Partners and Puppets.” Written by Mark Waid and art by Travis Moore. Cover art was done by Dan Mora. This is the second part of the crossover with World’s Finest and it continues the Gorilla Grodd story. However, the whole Air wave story felt rushed and I was not happy with how the story progressed. It seemed as if it needed more time to develop instead of just throwing it a handful of pages and saying it was done. Disappointing arc so far.

Dust to Dust #5. Written by JG Jones & Phil Bram with art and cover art by JG Jones (Silver Medalist). I love the sepia tone of the art in this series. JG Jones’s work is just perfect for this story that they are telling. It is a story that is continuing to be mysterious each issue.

X-Force #10. “The X-Equation.” Written by Geoffrey Thorne and art by Marcus To. Backup story by Fabian Nicieza and art by Edgar Salazar. This is the Legacy number 300 of X-Force and the final issue of the series for now as Forge’s secret plans are revealed to the team and they are not fans of them. The variant cover art (Marvel vs. Capcom) was done by Bengus.

The Last Boy #2. Written by Dan Panosian and illustrated by Alessio Avallone. Cover was done by Dan Panosian. The tale of Peter Pan and Wendy continue separately through this issue, with each facing troubles. Heck, if I did not know better, I might consider Peter Pan to be the antagonist of this book. Hmm. Intriguing.

Infinity Watch #4. Written by Derek Landy and art by Enid Balám & Ruairi Coleman. Salvador Larroca & GURU-eFX did the cover art. The Infinity Watch is back from the weird-o universe, adn Star changes things back. But it is not much better.

Ultimate Black Panther #15. Written by Bryan Hill and art by Stefano Caselli. Stefano Caselli and David Curiel did the cover art. T’Challa is attempting to find other allies in the African countries, but they have not heard of Wakanda. But T’Challa is looking of help to deal with the anti-vibranium.

Sabretooth: The Dead Don’t Talk #5. Written by Frank Tieri and art by Michael Sta. Maria. Cover art was done by Carlo Pagulayan, Jason Paz & Rain Beredo. This was a really strong ending to a series that got better with each issue.

Those Not Afraid #4. Written by Kyle Starks and art by Patrick Piazzalunga. This is getting darker as the serial killers have upped the ante in their attempt to set a new record. I’m not sure how I feel about this issue as the difference between serial killer and spree killer is debated. However, the final panel with the return of a certain individual elevated this book more.

Other books this week: Blade Forger #2, Deadpool/Wolverine #4, Metamorpho #5, Bug Wars #3, Absolute Martian Manhunter #2, and The Power Fantasy#8.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #149

April 19

Welcome back to the EYG Comic Cavalcade with issue #149. This week, I was able to purchase my final two issues of Groo the Wanderer, #114 & 115, which completed the series of Marvel/Epic Comics run, #1-120. I have been searching for these for about a year and a half, and I was able to complete it off eBay this week.

I also picked up a bunch of the Zdarsky Comic News issues. These were fun and were free! That made me very please and I liked the format.

And happy Superman Day everyone! I have never been a huge fan of Superman, but I do respect him and think that he could be done well with the proper writer. There were several freebies on Superman Day and a reprint of All-Star Superman #1 with the most beautiful foil cover.

Books this week:

Ghost Man #1. Written, drawn and cover art by Raymar Brunson. I have been searching for this for a month or so. It has been so tough that I was starting to believe that this was just a rumor. Todd checked in Des Moines and some of those shop owners had never heard of it. I finally saw it on eBay, but it was over 30 dollars and that was too much for me. I found another one at a much more reasonable level and I bought it. Then on Friday, it arrived. It existed! And it was great.

X-Factor #9. “Lost Causes.” Written by Mark Russell and art by Bob Quinn. Cover art was done by Greg Land & Frank D’Armata (Bronze Medalist). This is the penultimate issue of this series, which is ending with issue 10. What does this issue give us? More Granny Smite! I love Granny Smite! Oh, there is some Archangel too.

Sam Wilson: Captain America #4. “Better Angels Part 4” Written by Greg Pak & Evan Narcisse and penciled by Chris Campana. Taurin Clarke did the cover art. With floating cities above most black cities of the Marvel Universe, Sam and his crew look to stop Eaglestar. Thunderbolt Ross is here too. What happens when he becomes the Red Hulk?

Exceptional X-Men #8. Written by Eve L. Ewing and art by Carmen Carnero. Cover art was done by Carmen Carnero & Nolan Woodard. Mister Sinister is here. Trouble is in the leaves for these characters.

Summer of Superman #1. “The Past, the Present the Future.” Written by Mark Waid, Dan Slott and Joshua Williamson with art by Jorge Jimenez, Belen Ortega and Dan Mora. Variant cover art by Alexander Lozano. I only picked this up because of the cool Supergirl cover, but I read the story and I really enjoyed it. These are three immensely talented writers on this special so I can understand why this worked for me.

Superior Avengers #1. “The Everlasting Gaze“. Written by Steve Foxe and art by Luca Maresca with Kyle Hotz. Cover art by R.B. Silva & Jesus Aburtov. Variant cover art by Joshua Cassara (Silver medalist). Doctor Doom needed an Avengers squad and he found a bunch of alternate universe “heroes” to form this group. Fun group.

Buried Long, Long Ago #1. Written by Anthony Cleveland and art and cover art by Alex Cormack. Mad Cave has been on fire lately and this is another new and fantastic book from this comic company. It was dark and disturbing, and I loved it.

Spectacular Spider-Men #14. “Home and Hearth.” Written by Greg Weisman and art by Andres Genolet. Cover art was done by Mark Bagley & Edgar Delgado. Peter and Miles have to take on the Lizard to help out the Connors family.

Wolverine #8. Two stories written by Saladin Ahmed and drawn by Martin Coccolo. A third story written and drawn by Daniel Warren Johnson. Cover art by Martin Coccolo & Bryan Valenza. This is the Legacy number 400 of Wolverine as the war with Adamantine continued. I was also sad as the new Wendigo, aka Lawrence, was cured. I liked the new Wendigo and I was sorry to see him go even though it was nice to see the kid overcome his curse.

Godzilla vs. the Hulk #1. Written by Gerry Duggan and art by Giuseppe Camuncoli. Cover art was done by Lee Garbett (Gold Medalist). Ever wonder what a Gamma-powered Godzilla might be like? Wonder no more! I am not a huge fan of this version of the Hulk, but he is always awesome against other massive monsters.

World’s Finest #38. “Chapter One: Superior Species.” Written by Mark Waid and art by Clayton Henry. Variant cover B by Adrian Gutierrez & Matt Herms. This is the first issue of the World’s Finest/Justice League Unlimited crossover. We face off with Gorilla Grodd in this issue. Grodd takes over Superman’s mind. That is a bad thing.

Ultimate Wolverine #4. Written by Chris Condon and art by Alessandro Cappuccio. Cover art was done by Alessandro Cappuccio & Frank Martin. This was a fascinating issue with most of the issue using a wolf battling a bear. However, it is more than what it looked like. This has been a solid Ultimates book so far.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8. “Fighting our Way to Nowhere.” Written by Jason Aaron and art by Juan Ferreyra. Variant cover B art by Kevin Eastman. This Jason Aaron run on TMNT has been spectacular. It is so full of character development and interactions between the Turtles themselves. This issue featured Donnie and Leo mainly.

Redcoat #11. Creators are Geoff Johns & Bryan Hitch. Cover art was done by Bryan Hitch & Brad Anderson. Redcoat continues to be one of the best reads of the month. This issue brought us a tale during the Civil War and we see the debut of the Northerner.

Absolute Flash #2. “Of Two Worlds Part Two” Written by Jeff Lemire with the art and cover art by Nick Robles. This Absolute book, after just two issues, may be my favorite of the Absolute books from DC. I love the look of the book with the art and the design of each panel and Jeff Lemire is one of the best writers in comics.

Challengers of the Unknown #5. “Rock & a Hard Place.” Written by Christopher Cantwell with art by Sean Izaakse & Amancry Nahuelpan. Cover art by Sean Izaakse & Romulo Fajarod Jr. This short series of the Challengers came to a close as the mystery of what was happening was revealed… sort of.

Sister Imperator #2. Script by Corinna Bechko and art by Puste. Cover art was done by Mikael Eriksson. This new Dark Horse book has been really good so far. What is it like to be fired out of a cannon at a circus? Here you go.

Iron Man #7. “Bow Down to your Doom.” Written by Spencer Ackerman and art by Julius Ohta. Cover art was done by Yasmine Putri. Tony Stark is trying to do what he could to prevent Dr. Doom from continuing to control the world. Victorious showed up here too.

Daredevil: Unleash Hell #4. Written by Erica Schultz and penciled by Valentina Pinti & Jose Luis Soares. Cover art done by Paulo Siqueiro & Rachelle Rodriguez. Elektra vs. dark Elektra. Muse vs. Muse. This one has all kinds of conflict.

Other books this week: The Hive #3, Web of Venomverse: Fresh Brains #1, Mine is a Long, Lonesome Grave #3, Zatanna #3, Power Man: Timeless #3, Frankenstein New World: The Sea of Forever #2, The New Gods #5, and Arkham Horror #4.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #148

April 11

A little lighter week this week. Plus I missed out on a couple of Marvel titles that had not been delivered yet. Hope to get those soon.

Books this week:

Amazing Spider-Man #1. Written by Joe Kelly and art by Pepe Larraz. Back up story entitled “Death to the Tyrant” by Joe Kelly and John Romita Jr. I have two variant covers, one foil by Mark Chiarello and one by CAFU. The new volume of Amazing Spider-Man arrived this week, but it was one of those books that did not arrive. I was able to grab the couple variants. I enjoyed the new story very much. I think it was much better than the most recent run on ASM.

Godzilla Heist #1-2. Written by Van Jensen and art by Kelsey Ramsay. A intriguing Godzilla tale. The big monster is being manipulated, used to help carry out some highly constructed heists. I have not picked up a bunch of Godzilla books before, but I have always liked the character.

The Herculoids #1. Written by Tom Sniegoski and art by Craig Rousseau. Cover art was by Francesco Mattina. Another of the new Dynamite Comics books featuring classic cartoons of the 80s. I was never a Herculoids kid, but I wanted to give this one a shot. I do not think that I will be continuing with this one.

Batman: Dark Patters #5. “The Voice of the Tower Part 2.” Written by Dan Watters and art and cover art by Hayden Sherman (Gold Medalist). Batman is continuing to go into the building in search of Scarface. The monstrous building is weird for sure.

Phantom Road #11. “The Horrormen Part 1” Written by Jeff Lemire and art and cover art by Gabriel H. Walta. The new arc of Phantom Road kicked off with this issue and I really liked this. The character of the Horrormen are very intriguing and I enjoyed these debuts.

Return of the Living Dead #3. Written by S.A. Check and James Kuhoric with art by Andrea Arcari. Cover art by Mark Spears (Silver Medalist). The continuation of the zombie outbreak and I really have been liking the plotline. The covers by Mark Spears are always top tier.

Uncanny X-Men #13. “Machinations of Dread.” Written by Gail Simone and art by David Marquez. Variant cover art by Luciano Vecchio. The new story arc, titled “The Dark Artery” begins with this issue which included a new character named Henrietta Benjamin. It is very interesting and I like how the issue builds along. Plus, Deathdream shows up at the end with.. Man-Thing? Huh?

Daredevil #20. “Rites of Reconciliation” Part One. Written by Saladin Ahmed and penciled by Jose Luis Soares. Cover art is done by John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna, and Richard Isanove. Daredevil takes a step forward in an old outfit. DD takes out the old black armor to feel something different.

Storm #7. “Serpents, Salamanders and Storm Gods.” Written by Murewa Ayodele with art by Luciano Vecchio. Variant cover art by Marguerite Sauvage. Storm is taking on the storm gods around… and then … we get Thor!

Behemoth #3. Script by Grant Sputore & Ryan Engle and art and cover art by Jay Martin. This Dark Horse series has been a great book so far. Our characters are meeting some new people who have also been inside the monster. Can they escape before the military uses a nuclear weapon on the beast?

The Great British Bump-Off: Kill or Be Quilt #1. Script by John Allison and art and cover art by Max Sarin. Shauna has her uncle’s boat and damaged it. She had to find a way to pay for the repairs. This led to Shauna gaining a job at a quilt shop… and more.

Vatican City #1. Written by Mark Millar and art by Per Berg. Another strong new Dark Horse book. This time, with vampires! Vampires take over the world, but they can not go into the consecrated grounds of Vatican City. Greta start to this one.

Phoenix #10. Written by Stephanie Phillips and art by Alessandro Miracolo. Cover art by Yasmine Putri (Bronze Medalist). Cosmic Phoenix is still out there and we see flashbacks to the young Jean. This has been a strong series so far.

Incredible Hulk #24. “Blood Magic” Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and art by Kev Walker. Nic Klein did the cover art. Bruce and Charlie head to the Sanctum Santorum see if Doctor Strange could help Charlie out. Unfortunately, Strange is currently in Asgard (see later) and they come across Clea. Things may not be as they seem and this is the second book this week with a last page Thor cameo.

Laura Kinney: Wolverine #5. “Brother in Arms- Part 2” Written by Erica Schultz and art by Giada Belviso. Cover art was done by Elena Casagrande & Edgar Delgado. Laura and Bucky take on Hydra? Laura and Bucky have a great chemistry in the book. I would love to see them together again.

Absolute Batman #7. “Absolute Zero.” Written by Scott Snyder and art by Marcos Martin. Cover art as done by Nick Dragotta & Frank Martin (Gold Medalist). We get our first look at Victor and Nora Fries, along with their son… who turns out to the the Absolute Mister Freeze.

Geiger #13. Written by Geoff Johns and art by Gary Frank. Cover art by Gary Frank &Brad Anderson. This is a heavy set up issue as we are about to have Geiger vs. Glowing Woman. Next issue should be a huge one.

Doctor Strange of Asgard #2. Written by Derek Landy and art by Carlos Magno. Geoff Shaw & Arthur Hesli did the cover art. Remember my comments earlier about Dr. Strange? Well, here he is in Asgard, trying to help out Loki and get some of the Sorcerer Supreme power back. This is a fun series with the Doctor.

Other books this week: Transformers #19, The Moon is Following Us #8, Golden rage: Mother Knows Best #1, and Creature Commandos #6.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #147

April 5

It is time for the EYG Comic Cavalcade once again. I have to shout out to the comic company Mad Cave. I have really found that this independent company has been releasing some excellent books recently, picking up their game. I think this company is just behind Image (close to a tie with DC) for me on my current favorite company list. 1. Marvel, 2. Image, 3. DC, 4. Mad Cave, 5. Dynamite, 6. Boom! Studios, 7. DSTLRY (DSTLRY would be higher if they had a more consistent release schedule) 8. Dark Horse 9. Oni, 10. Keenspot. This list is consistently fluid, of course, as it may depend on specific books released.

Other books this week:

All-New Venom #5. Written by Al Ewing and art by Carlos Gomez. Cover art was done by Adam Kubert & Laura Martin. In the EYG Comic Cavalcade #143, I speculated that maybe Marvel was pulling a swerve and not making this all-new Venom one of the four suspects that they were promoting as the suspects. I had a gut feeling that they were pulling out a surprise and I was right about it. I am not sure how I feel about the reveal of the All-New Venom. We’ll see how it goes.

Spider-Boy #18. “Keys to the Kingdom.” Written by Dan Slott and art by Paco Medina. Cover art was done by Paco Medina and Edgar Delgado. Spider-Boy has to face off with Mister Negative, despite Spider-Man’s objections.

Past Time #1. Written by Joe Harris and art by Russell Olson. Mark Chiarello did the cover art. One of those new Mad Cave books that I really liked. The story had a time frame from early days of baseball and the days of the first night game at Wrigley Field. There are a lot of things going on in this book and I loved it.

You Never Heard of Me #3. Written by Iolanda Zanfardino and illustrated by Elisa Romboli. Will is having a difficult time adjusting to his powers to see the best and worst moment of anyone’s life (which switches on a regular basis). He sees that a classmate Rory could die and he wants to figure out how it is going to happen.

I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer #1. Written by Doug Wagner and art by Daniel Hillyard. Cover art (Both cover A & B) by Daniel Hillyard and Michelle Madsen. Rennie has been accepted to the New York Fashion and Design Institute. She was after a certain thing, but it was not necessarily the reason one would expect. She is a serial killer. Look out, Sofie. I had to grab the cover B version along with the cover A because I loved the B, but I wanted A too.

We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us #1. Written by Matthew Rosenberg and art and cover art by Stefano Landini. A brand new story that, when broken down, is really the story of a father and his daughter. Admittedly, there are more levels to this new Image book than that. This first issue was compelling though. We’ll see where it goes.

West Coast Avengers #6. Written by Gerry Conway and art by Ton Lima. Cover art was done by Ben Harvey. We get some Avengers on Avengers violence in this issue as some members of the Avengers face off with the West Coast Avengers over the potential dangers of Ultron. I have enjoyed this series so far.

X-Men #14. Written by Jed MacKay and penciled by Ryan Stegman. Variant cover D art by Woo Chul Lee. Piper, the young girl of the mutant-hating mother, was told that she was not a mutant and turned away by the X-Men. She has disappeared into the wilderness of Alaska and there was definitely something about the girl.

Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #1. Dialogue by Charles Soule and art and cover art by Steve McNiven (Gold Medalist). I typical am not a fan of the possible future stories like this one. Throw that out the window. I loved this book. It might be the best book of the week. The future version of Matt Murdock is awesome and I loved everything about this series. Charles Soule is a great writer and you can see his skill here. Three issue series and it started tremendously.

Juvenile #5. Written, art and cover art by Jesus Orellana. This was the final issue of this Image series. I have enjoyed this book considerably. It has a Stranger Things meet X-Men feel to it and I think the book is set up to continue at some time in the future. Great stuff.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #32. “God War Part 1” Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Marco Renna. Federico Vicentini & Neeraj Menon did the cover art. Miles finds himself in the middle of a bunch of Gods, from Thor, Hercules, Anansi to Ares. Miles has to be considered a big gun at this point.

Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #7. “Pool Party” written by Jed MacKay and art by Domenico Carbone. Cover art by Davide Paratore (Silver Medalist). Moon Knight has a plan to attempt to draw out Hank Pym. The plan involved Pym’s daughter, Nadia. There is a lot of connections between Moon Knight and Hank Pym that they can mine for goodness here. I love when they use the characters’ background.

Absolute Superman #6. “Son of Smallville” Written by Jason Aaron and art by Carmine Di Giandomenico. Cover art was done by Rafa Sandoval & Ulises Arreola. We get the back story of what happened when an older Kal-El, more teenage than baby, arrived in Kansas with Jonathan and Martha Kent. It was a little different than what we were used to.

Let This One Be A Devil #2. Script by James Tynion IV & Steve Foxe and art by Piotr Kowalski. Gavin Fullerton did the cover art. This “True Weird Story” continues with a look at the mysterious Leeds Devil. This reminds me of a horror version of Blue Book, a series from Dark Horse penned by Tynion IV. This has some scary moments inside that really work with his style.

Immortal Thor #22. “The Edge” Written by Al Ewing and art by Jan Bazaldua. Alex Ross did the cover art. Thor and Skurge are joined by Hermod in their quest that may be leading to a major event in this series.

Those Not Afraid #3. Script by Kyle Starks and art by Patrick Piazzalunga. Cover art was done by Glenn Fabry. Turned out that out two serial killers, competing with each other for most kills, were able to squirm their way out of trouble from last issue.

Hyde Street #5. Written by Geoff Johns and art by Francis Portela. Cover art by Ivan Reis, Danny Miki with Brad Anderson. Miss Glee Goodbody is our focus this issue of Hyde Street. She was a horrendous woman. Very unlikable. Hyde Street still has that Twilight Zone feel to it and it delivers a strong story each issue.

The Lucky Devils #3. Written by Charles Soule and art and cover art by Ryan Browne. Charles Soule seems to be very busy lately with a bunch of Marvel books and this one that definitely has that Eight Billion Genies vibe to it. No genies, but demons from Hell instead. This continues to be a fun title with some of the more creative ideas you are going to find.

Pop Kill #2. Story by Jimmy Palmiotti & Dave Johnson and art by Juan Santacruz. Variant cover B art by ark Chiarello. What happens when you get James Bond fighting villainous agents over a pop formula? You get Pop Kill. Another new Mad Cave book that has a lot going for it. I love this cool variant cover too. Probably could have competed for the medal if I had gotten it earlier in the week.

Darkwing Duck #2. Written by Daniel Kibblesmith and art by Ted Brandt & Ro Stein. Cover art was done by Tad Stones. This issue of the Disney character Darkwing Duck featured Gosalyn and her school play. She is manipulated by a super villain posing as her substitute teacher. Ah, if I had a nickel for every substitute teacher who was truly a super villain.

Plague House #1. Written by Michael W. Conrad and illustrated and cover art by Dave Chisholm. Another good new independent book, but this time it is from Oni Press. An online ghost hunter group, looking to debunk the false houses, go into a house where it is anything but fake. There are some very dramatic moments in this issue.

Concert of Champions #1. Written by Jason Loo and art by Rafael Loureiro & Ruairi Coleman. Cover art was done by Javier Garrón & Romulo Fajardo Jr. Dazzler, Luna Snow and Lil Cheney are putting on a concert. That means there will be trouble coming. Here in the form of a super villain heavy metal band. Hmm.

Hello Darkness #9. Variant Cover art by Jenny Frison. Once again, there is a group of intriguing horror/thriller stories inside this anthology series. “Teacher’s Pet” from Cullen Bunn is probably my favorite of the issue. That has some personal connection as a teacher.

Psylocke #6. “House of Ghosts.” Written by Alyssa King and art by Vincenzo Carratù and Moises Hidalgo. Mahmud Asrar & Matthew Wilson did the cover art. What is happening to Kwannon? And can a trip to see the Uncanny X-Men, in particular Deathdream, help out. Will Rogue think it is a good idea? More conflict between the two X-teams.

Absolute Green Lantern #1. “The Black Hand.” Written by Al Ewing and art and cover art by Jahnoy Lindsay. Al Ewing is everywhere these days. How many books is this guy writing in a month? He hits another home run with this new version of Green Lantern. I love the way he weaves these other Lanterns into this story. Another strong Absolute DC book.

Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma #1. “This Body Holding Me.” Written by Ram V and art by Anand RK and Jackson “Butch” Guice. Jeff Dèkal did the cover art. This is a solid book from DC Comics’ Black Label. I did not know this character before, though Todd said he used to love him. I am intrigued by what I read here and, with a grumble, will pick up yet another DC book.

Hornsby & Halo #5. Storytellers are Peter J. Tomasi & Peter Snejbjerg. Zach and Rose are reeling from the things that have been happening to them so far, but this issue takes that to another step. Pinch each other to see if they are dreaming.

The Atom Project #4. “Catalyst.” Written by Ryan Parrott and John Ridley and art by Mike Perkins. Variant cover B art by Mark Spears (Bronze Medalist). Captain Atom vs. Zmeck. The Atom Project has been a solid series so far, and I believe it is coming to an end soon. It shows that you can have a good series with any characters as long as there is good writing.

Deadpool #13. Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Rogê Antônio. Taurin Clarke did the cover art. Deadpool and Daughters are on the path to find Death Grip. On the path, they must fight Solem, he with the adamantium skin. If you haven’t had enough of them together yet, Wolverine makes a cameo with Deadpool.

Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe One Last Time #1. Written by Cullen Bunn and art by Dalibor Talajic. Cover is the April Pool’s Day Variant cover with all white. Remember when I mentioned earlier about how I usually did not like possible future stories but I loved the new Daredevil one? This is an example of the other way around. I did not care for this at all and liked it even less when I learned it was more than just a one shot.

Two-Face #5. “Roll the Dice and Die!” Written by Christian Ward and art by Fabio Veras. Cover art was done by Baldemar Rivas. Two-Face’s daughter? Die. Rolls her way into this issue, trying to find her father. This penultimate issue of the book sets up the next issue with Batman.

Olympians: Hades-Lord of the Dead Graphic Novel. Created by George O’Connor. I picked this up off of Amazon this week because my 8th grade class will be reading an excerpt from this graphic novel out of their HMH curriculum this coming week and I wanted to see the whole thing. I did the same thing with Monster: A Graphic Novel by Walter Dean Myers. I do like how this program includes some graphic novels in their units.

Other books this week: Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur 10th Anniversary Special #1, The Terminator #6, Red Before Black #5, Ironheart: Bad Chemistry #1, Rivals #1, Secret Six #2, Money Shot: Big Bang #0, Ripperland #3, Sam and Twitch Case Files #12, and Ultimate X-Men.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #146

March 29

Good evening from EYG. It is time to go through the ton of books from this week. It was a large week of books and, while I did not get every one of them, there are a bunch of books for the week.

Jumping right in with this week’s books:

Big Burn #3. Written by Joe Henderson and art and cover art by Lee Garbett. I have been waiting for this book for what seems like months. In fact, according to my CLZ app, Big Burn #2 came out on Nov. 13, 2024. So literal months. These long release times do make it more difficult to read these DSTLRY books, but they are always so great that you have to put up with it. Big Burn may be my favorite DSTLRY series so far.

Absolute Wonder Woman #6. “The Lady or the Tiger“. Written by Kelly Thompson and art by Mattia De Iulis. Cover art was done by Hayden Sherman & Jordie Bellaire (Gold Medalist). Diana is in the Underworld facing Hades. She tells of her time meeting Prometheus among others. I do like centering Wonder Woman with the Greek Myths and this was an entertaining issue.

Dust to Dust #4. Written by JG Jones & Phil Bram and art and cover art by JG Jones. This issue gives us more details about the past of the Sheriff and the big secret that shamed him from his past. We also get a glance at the man in the gas mask, who adorns the cover of this issue.

Uncanny X-Men #12. “Some Kinda Way.” Witten by Gail Simone and art by Gavin Guidry. David Marquez & Matthew Wilson did the cover art. We get a story from the past of everyone’s favorite Cajun, Remy LeBeau. It is a tale that comes back to the current day in the form of a man named The Vig. Gambit has been a major character for Marvel over the last year or so.

Weapon X-Men #2. “Tsunami.” Written by Joe Casey and penciled by Chriscross. Cover art by Chriscross & Fer Sifuentes-Sujo. I think there were too many Wolverine & Deadpool crossovers this week. This is yet another one where Wade betrayed Logan… or did he? Baron Strucker is around too. This was the best of the Wolvie-Deadpool team ups this week (which is setting the bar low).

Far Down Below #1. Written by Chris Condon and art by Gegê Schall. Cover art was by Jacob Phillips. Brand new book from Mad Cave this week and I loved it. This felt like a mix of Journey to the Center of the Earth and The Goonies. I am here for it. I have to say that it sure feels as if Mad Cave has been on fire lately. I loved Chris Condon’s work in That Texas Blood too and this kick off issue hit on all cylinders.

You’ll Do Bad Things #1. Story by Tyler Boss and art by Adriano Turtulici. Cover art was done by Tyler Boss. Bad “Things,” not bad “Thongs!” It’s an inside joke. Another good first issue this week, this time from Image Comics. There is some connection between a writer and a serial killer. Either way, the writer is tired of true crime, particularly when the true crime is the murders of children.

The Exorcism at 1600 Penn #4. Written by Hannah Rose May and art and cover art by Vanesa Del Rey. This four issue series that saw the President of the United States’ daughter possessed by a demon, came to a satisfying conclusion here. This has been one of the better short series from the independent comics. It was a comic that grabbed my attention via its cover and kept my attention because of its story.

X-Manhunt Omega #1. “Dreams End.” Written by Murewa Ayodele & Gail Simone with art by Gleb Melnikov, Federica Mancin & Enid Balan. Cover art was done by Gleb Melnikov & Morry Hollowell. The final part of the seven part X-Manhunt storyline that ran across the X-Men family books this past month ends with this issue as Professor X and his reborn love Lilandra seem to leave earth for the final time. The X-Men come together for a goodbye.

Metamorpho #4. “The HQ That Walked Like a Man!” Written by Al Ewing and art by Steve Lieber. Lieber and Lee Loughridge did the cover art. Metamorpho fights a building. I did not mistype that. He fights a building. Oh, and the files that Simon Stagg has on Metamorpho comes straight from the Who’s Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe book. That was both cool and fourth wall breaking for me.

Standstill #8. Story by Lee Loughridge and art by Alex Riegel. Cover art was done by Andrew Robinson. Standstill closes up with a dramatic final struggle over the watch that freezes time. This was chocked full of action and the imagery of the art fit with it extremely well. It left off on quite a cliffhanger too leading one to believe that there may be more Standstill down the road.

Fantastic Four #30. “Rock Bottom.” Written by Ryan North and penciled by Cory Smith. Joshua Cassara & Dean White did the cover art. This “One World Under Doom” crossover sees Ben Grimm struggling after Doctor Doom “cured” him of his rock form. How does the Puppet Master play into this story?

Justice League Unlimited #5. Written by Mark Waid and art by Dan Mora. Cover art was done by Dan Mora. Impulse is at the heart of this story as he seems to be getting in the way more than helping. We also see the reforming of the Legion of Doom… and I don’t mean Road Warrior Hawk and Road Warrior Animal. JLU begins a three month crossover event with World’s Finest. Now I have to buy another DC book. *GRUMBLE*

Ultimate Wolverine #3. Written by Chris Condon and art by Alessandro Cappuccio. Cover art by Alessandro Cappuccio and Frank Martin. We get the debuts of Ultimate versions of Gambit and Kitty Pryde this issue. Another book written by Chris Condon that is excellent. He has worked his way into one of my favorite writers around.

Infinity Watch #3. Written by Derek Landy and art by Enid Balám. Cover art was done by Salvador Larroca & GURU-eFX. The Infinity Watch members are all dead. But why are they in different forms? Wild stuff in this issue as the Infinity stones saga continues.

The Kids #1. Written by Garth Ennis and art and cover art by Dalibor Talajic (Silver Medalist). A one-shot story from Image Comics’ Ninth Circle imprint. I really enjoyed this story. What do you do when all of the infants and children are immediately transformed into adults? It was an extremely creative take on the “zombie” idea, but with angry, scared and hungry adults with the brains of babies. My biggest disappointment was this was a one shot. I would have bought into more of this.

Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four #1. Written by Ryan North and art by John Romita Jr. Cover art was done by Adam Kubert & Morry Hollowell. This is the first of the Marvel Universe characters face off with Godzilla books that are coming this month. Of course, Godzilla ends up with the Power Cosmic from the Silver Surfer because why shouldn’t he?

Daredevil #19. “Introductory Rites” Conclusion. Written by Saladin Ahmed and art by Aaron Kuder. John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna and Richard Isanove did the cover art. The final demon from Hell forced Daredevil to make a choice… save Foggy or save Bullseye. Hmm… not sure if this is a true conflict.

Ultimate Spider-Man #15. Written by Jonathan Hickman and guest artist David Messina. Cover art was done by Marco Checchetto. Peter is having trouble with the loss of his friend Harry. Nothing a little father son super hero training couldn’t help. Plus, Ultimate Sandman makes his first appearance.

Gold Key Select Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery #1. Gold Key is trying to cash in on the nostalgia bug that has grasped pop culture these days with reprints of the 1962 Boris Karloff Thriller comics. I usually do not go for reprints like this, but I do have a good place in my heart for Boris Karloff from my childhood of watching those Universal Monsters movies and I am happy I have this.

Amazing Spider-Man #70. “Nothing Can Stop the Spider-Naut.” Written by Joe Kelly and penciled by Ed McGuinness. Ed McGuinness, Cliff Rathburn & Marcio Menyz did the cover art. This is the final issue of this volume of Amazing Spider-Man. This volume was highlighted by Peter Parker being transformed into creatures. We had Spider-Goblin for awhile. Now we have Spider-Naut… where Peter has the Juggernaut power. I have not been a big fan of this “The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man” arc, but I feel as if it finished up strong.

The Department of Truth #29. Written by James Tynion IV and art and cover art by Martin Simmonds. This book continues to be the top of the game of the conspiracy theories. I love the creative use of this wild storytelling even if it can be challenging to follow at times. I enjoy a book that demands that I am smart enough to read it.

Feral #11. Written by Tony Fleecs and art by Trish Forstner. I picked up two copies of this this week, the first one with the cover art by Tony Fleecs & Tone Rodriguez and the variant cover art by Trish Forstner & Allen Passalaqua (Gold Medalist). Feral has been a suspenseful book every month and who thought that a bunch of cats could be this compelling?

Doll Parts: A Lovesick Tale #4. Written, illustrated and cover art by Luana Vecchio. This prequel series came to a close with a dramatic character piece. Madeline went through all kinds of physical and mental issues. I did not know this was a prequel, leading into the Lovesick series.

Absolute Martian Manhunter #1. Written by Deniz Camp and art and cover art by Javier Rodriguez. This book is colorful, creative, and extremely original. This was something different and I did like this.

The Last Boy #1. Written by Dan Panosian and illustrated by Alessio Avallone. Cover art was done by Dan Panosian. Peter Pan. Captain Hook. Wendy. They are all here, but maybe not as you remember them. This Boom! Studio book is an interesting one.

Black Canary: Best of the Best #5. “Round Five” Written by Tom King and art and cover art by Ryan Sook. I have loved this Black Canary series so far as the penultimate issue was epic. This book is not only the amazing contest between Canary and Lady Shiva, but a character piece involving Canary and her mother. Tom King is another of my favorite writers.

Universal Monsters: The Mummy #1. Written and art by Faith Erin Hicks. The cover art was by Faith Eric Hicks & Lee Loughridge (Bronze Medalist). I have enjoyed this series of Universal Monsters books and the Mummy is next. This is a great start and I am looking forward to the rest of the issues.

Doom Academy #2. Written by Mackenzie Cadenhead and art by Pasqual Ferry & Joao M.P. Lemos. Variant cover art by Ron Lim & Israel Silva. This variant cover of Doyle Dormammu was very nearly a medalist this week. I do love these Strange Academy characters and placing them in the middle of this One World Under Doom storyline is a smart move.

Rogue The Savage Land #3. Written by Tim Seeley and art by Zulema Scotto Lavina. Kaare Andrews did the cover art. I have never loved these stories that fall into past moments of the Marvel Universe. This one has been fine because I do like the characters, especially Ka-Zar.

Laura Kinney: Wolverine #4. “Brother in Arms- Part 1” Written by Erica Schultz and art by Giada Belviso. Cover art was done by Elena Casagrande & Edgar Delgado. Laura Kinney and Bucky Barnes team up in this issue as these two characters have seemingly a lot in common.

Red Hulk #2. “The Great Escape.” Written by Benjamin Percy and art by Geoff Shaw. Variant cover art was done by Greg Land & Rachelle Rosenberg. Thunderbolt Ross was spent with the Red Hulk, so he had team up with Machine Man, Deathlok, and Simon Ryker to escape from the Doombots and the prison they were being held in.

Incredible Hulk #23. “The Skin of Charlie Tidwell” Part Two. Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and art and cover art by Nic Klein. This is a creepy episode as the winged monster is wearing Charlie’s skin. Sentence you would never expect the Hulk to say: “Take off the skin now.”

Kill Train #3. Written by Olivia Cuartero-Briggs and art by Martina Niosi of Outclass Studio. Skylar Patridge did the cover art. Another really solid book from Mad Cave. Kill Train has been brutal and bloody and a real good time.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #4. Written by Christos Gage and art by Eric Gapstur. Cover art was by Leonardo Romero (Bronze Medalist). The prequel series to the animated TV show gets, I believe, its penultimate issue with Spidey taking on Silvermane and the Enforcers. Peter is in bad shape at the end of the issue.

The Seasons #3. Written by Rick Remender and art and cover art by Paul Azaceta. Summer has been having all kinds of trouble and her sister Winter has had about all she can take. However, there is absolutely something going on and Summer is the one calling it out.

The Patchwork Girl of Oz #3. Adapted, illustrated and cover art by Otis Frampton. Adapted from the novel by L. Frank Baum. The Patchwork Girl is brought to life but her “brain” had way more than what was intended. The wild moment lead to a tragedy for Unc. Nunkie.

Pooluminati #1 and Deadpool vs. Wolverine: Slash ‘Em Up #1. I mentioned earlier about Deadpool and Wolverine and these two books have a lot of those two characters in it. Neither of these were that good. It just felt like I was overwhelmed by the amount of Deadpool and the amount of Deadpool with Wolverine.

Other books this week: Peacemaker Presents Vigilante/Eagly Double Feature #1, Thunderbolts: Doomstrike #2, Doom’s Division #1, Vampirella #1 (Silver Medalist), Nights #14, Sherlock Holmes The Dark Detective: Claws of the Chimera #4, and Free for All #1.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #145

March 24

On Saturday, I took a trip to In This Issue Comics in Bettendorf. I do like this little shop because it has such a variety of independent books. There are some books that I picked up there that I had not ever seen before. There was one company called BQ Comics.

Because of timing, and the fact that next week’s haul at Comic World is going to be massive, I wanted to include these new independent books in an EYG Comic Cavalcade. There may be an eBay or two in here too…

Books this issue:

Crush Depth #1. Written by David “DB” Andry and Tim Daniel and art and cover art by Alex Sanchez. This was the book that inspired the trip to Bettendorf as I was intrigued by the concept of this comic. And this was one of the best books I picked up this week, including the books from EYG Comic Cavalcade#144. Engaging and entertaining action in a sub beneath the water with bizarre things happening. Mad Cave has a winner here.

Who are the Power Pals #1. Written by Duane Murray and art and cover art by Ahmed Raafat. A couple of washed up actors who had a very short lived TV show Called the Power Pals are trying to reclaim old glory. This Dark Horse book was more entertaining than I thought it was going to be.

LA Strong #1. This Mad Cave book was another book that I was not aware of. It is a charity comic for victims of the Los Angeles fires and it featured a who’s who of writers and artists. Each of them received a page or two and most of the book is not about storytelling as much as it is to speak some truth. Then some of the art in this book is breathtaking. It is a beautiful book.

Space Ghost #11. Written by David Pepose and art by Jonathan Lau. Francesco Mattina did the cover art. The copies delivered to Comic World of Space Ghost #11 were damaged and so I picked up this copy in Bettendorf to make sure that I could get it. Space Ghost is having all kinds of trouble with a whole bunch of his villains and a conflict with him and the kids.

Pop Kill #1. Written by Jimmy Palmiotti & Dave Johnson with art by Juan Santacruz. Variant cover D (boobies version) by Brian Steelfreeze. This was one from eBay this week. I picked up the uncensored version of the cover. I did enjoy this book with a battle between soda pop companies. It was not just because of the cover.

Ultimate X-Men #13. Writer and artist: Peach Momoko. Foil variant cover by Benjamin Su. I had this comic last week, but the foil variant cover caught my attention. I tried to ignore it, but I could not just leave it on the shelf. The cover was a beautiful one, even if it is not by Peach Momoko.

Galavera P.I. #1-4. Written and drawn by Marco Finnegan. I picked up this full four-issue series this weekend and the guy who checked me out said that he loved this series. He was right. This was fabulous. A story of a detective who has come back from the dead to take care of something he left behind. I loved the character design and the story was well written.

The 27 Run Crash #1-2. Written by Justin Zimmerman and art by by Russell Brown. This was the book from the company that referred to in the beginning, BQ Comics. It is a futuristic apocalyptic story about a man and his mech.

DC x Sonic the Hedgehog #1. “Chaos Crisis Part One” Written by Ian Flynn and art by Adam Bryce Thomas. Cover art by Pablo M. Collar. I picked this up as a collectible. I flipped through it, but did not read it. It had a nice cover, but honestly, it was just to grab a number one.

Convert #1-2. Written by John Arcudi and art by Savannah Finley. Cover art by Simon Gane. This is a series from Image that I had not heard of before, but I did like this one. It reminded me a bit of the movie The Martian mixed with a more sci-fi element. This was an interesting story so far.

Dream Weaver #1. Written by Chris Ryall and illustrated by Nelson Daniel. This is listed as a GIANT SYZE SPECIAL. I’m not sure what this was. It felt like a story that was told about a character named Dream Weaver that debuted before. It felt like it needed more explanation on what was going on. I did like the presentation overall.

Remote Space #1-3. Written, drawn and cover art by Cliff Rathburn. Another weird and wild Image Comics series. There are some wonderful character design but there is so much exposition in this book that it is hard to read. Only one more issue in this series though and it is a beautiful artistic book.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #144

Boy, there was a big week of comics this week, but it is nothing compared to what is coming next week.

I picked up a bunch of comics at Comic World and via eBay, as well as some purchased for me by Todd in Des Moines. I picked up a bunch of independents today at In This Issue Comics in Bettendorf that will not be included in this edition of EYG Comic Cavalcade. Depending on how much reading I get completed, I made do another issue of EYG CC before NEW COMIC BOOK DAY this Wednesday. That is a wait and see…

Next week, as I was going over Midtown Comics list, could have as many as 50 new books. That is an insane number. Probably will have to split into two EYG CC’s next week for sure.

Meanwhile, I have quite the potpourri of comic books this week. Todd calls some of the books that I pick up “unique.” It is tough when you are a trendsetter, like me.

This week’s “unique” books and others:

20 Degrees Past Rigor #1-3. Written by Rodney Barnes and drawn by Maan House. I have had issues #2 and #3 for awhile now, but I was missing #1, so they have been sitting in a pile waiting. I went to eBay to look at the book and it was rare and expensive so I put it off for some time. I finally ordered it and it arrived this week. This was just a three issue series from Zombie Love Studios and it was fun. I learned that the title was when the dead bodies started turning into zombies… twenty degree past when the body would become rigor.

X-Force #9. “The Shapley Value.” Written by Geoffrey Thorne and art by Marcus To. Stephen Segovia & Rain Beredo did the cover art. This is chapter six of the X-Manhunt, and we get the resurrection of Lilandra. This being the reason Charles Xavier has been running around free the last several chapters.

Dark Pyramid #1. Written by Paul Tobin and art and cover art by PJ Holden. This is a new series from Mad Cave that I could not find at any of the local shops and I have to grab via eBay. A podcaster goes missing during a recording session after entering a cave on Mt. Denau in Alaska. His girlfriend Becca heads to the mountain to try and find him. Intriguing mystery in this new book. Looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #31. “Pools of Blood Part Four” Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Luigi Zagaria. Federico Vicentini and Ceci De La Cruz did the cover art. Miles and Deadpool’s team up comes to an end with this issue and we get a cameo at the end of the book showing us where Miles is heading next… Hercules?

Exceptional X-Men #7. Written by Eve L. Ewing and art by Carmen Carnero. Carmen Carnero and Nolan Woodard did the cover art. Part of the X-Manhunt saga, but not a numbered chapter. This was listed as Collateral Damage and is barely connected. It is more about Axo discovering his new friend and mentor is actually Mister Sinister. Tough reveal for Axo.

The Deviant #9. Written by James Tynion IV and art and cover art by Joshua Hixson (Silver Medalist). The series comes to a dramatic conclusion after a long wait. Issue nine has been long time coming and it does not disappoint.

Absolute Batman #6. Written by Scott Snyder and art by Nick Dragotta. Cover art was done by Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin. Batman punts a young kid off a boat. It was one of the best things I have ever seen. Oh… and Absolute Joker makes his first appearance.

TVA #4. Written by Katharyn Blair and art by Pere Perez. Cover art was done by Pere Perez and GURU-eFX. I really like this mixture of the characters from Loki Disney + series and Marvel. Seeing Spider-Gwen, Captain Carter and a variant of Gambit working with B-15 and Mobius is a good time.

Saga #72. Written by Brian K. Vaughn and art and cover art by Fiona Staples (Gold Medalist). The weird and wild adventures of Hazel continue with the newest episode of the Saga. There is such a developed storyline here that it feels as if anything could happen, but I am confident that Vaughn and Staples knows exactly where they are headed. Saga is one of the best reads every month.

Avengers #24. “The Casino Job” Part 3. Written by Jed MacKay and art by Farid Karami. Valerio Schiti and Federico Blee did the art for the cover. Kang shows his treacherous side and Black Cat questions the side she is on. The Avengers then return to earth in time to discover that Dr. Doom is in control.

Absolute Flash #1. “Of Two Worlds Part One.” Written by Jeff Lemire and art and cover art by Nick Robles. I love Jeff Lemire and I have always liked the character of Flash, so this is a nice combination for me in the new “ABSOLUTE” books from DC. Wally West is our main protagonist and it sure does not seem as if Barry Allen has much of a future in this book. Good stuff so far.

One World Under Doom #2.The Free World.” Written by Ryan North and art by R.B. Silva. Variant cover art by R.B. Silva. Victor Von Doom is showing off his new power to Valeria Richards and uses his power to “un-rock” Ben Grimm. Thing no more? We’ve seen this happen several times so I do not expect this to be a long term development… especially with the Fantastic Four movie coming out from Marvel Studios in July.

West Coast Avengers #5. Written by Gerry Duggan and art by Danny Kim. Ben Harvey did the cover art. Finally caught up with the West Coast Avengers after missing an issue awhile ago and then not getting this one on time. I do like this roster of characters so far, but with Firestar off for rehab, I would like to see someone new.

Out of Alcatraz #1. “Modesto.” Written by Christopher Cantwell and art and cover art by Tyler Crook (Bronze Medalist). This is a piece of historical fiction combined with a what if. This follows two of the prisoners who tried to escape from Alcatraz. It was believed that the escapees had drowned in their escape attempt, but in this new book from Oni Press, Christopher Cantwell tells the story of two of them surviving and what happened to them after. I enjoyed this quite a bit too.

Return of the Living Dead #2. Written by S.A. Check and James Kuhoric and art by Andrea Arcari. Cover art by Mark Spears. Another book that came to me from eBay this week. It is yet another book that has provided us with zombie action. Plus an awesome Mark Spears cover.

Those Not Afraid #2. Written by Kyle Starks and art by Patrick Piazzalunga. Cover art was done by Glenn Fabry. Our serial killer competition is in full swing, but will it be derailed when the Headless Whores Man is arrested and the Home Intruder sprung a trap. Only two issues in and it seems like we are at the end. I suppose there is more coming from our mysterious killers.

You Never Heard of Me #2. Written by Iolanda Zanfardino and illustrated by Elisa Romboli. Will uses his new power that he gained from his grandma to help save a classmate from making a fatal mistake… and perhaps gains a new helper.

Eddie Brock: Carnage #2. Written by Charles Soule and art by Jesus Saiz. Iban Coello & Frank D’Armata did the cover art. Above all else, I was distracted in this issue because they kept talking about Oceanic Airliner Flight 814 crashing, and it was taking me back to Oceanic Flight 815 from LOST. Clearly that is an homage to my favorite show ever. Oh, and Carnage and Eddie tangle with Bushwacker.

New Champions #3. Written by Steve Foxe and art by Ivan Fiorelli. Cover art was done by Todd Nauck & Rachelle Rosenberg. The New Champions vs. the Champions! Manipulated by Psycho Man, the two teams, who should be the best of friends, fight each other. Are the Champions even a thing any more?

Bug Wars #2. “Ain’t No God in Swarm City.” Written by Jason Aaron and drawn by Mahmud Asrar. Cover art was done by Mahmud Asrar & Matthew Wilson. Bug Wars has been a cool read so far. Slade Slaymaker shrinks down and is in the fight of his bug-lovin’ life… in the grass outside his own house. One of the more creative books out this month.

Assorted Crisis Events #1. Written by Deniz Camp and art by Eric Zawadzki. Variant cover art B by Stipan Morian. This was a wild book. Playing with time is always a mind-f and this one is taking all of that to a brand new level. This is one of those unique books that truly is different than most books on the market.

The Hive #1 & 2. Written by AJ Lieberman and art by Mike Henderson. Another one I have been waiting for. I ordered this off eBay on Feb. 17, and I had not noticed that the seller listed the delivery time as a month + later. I was so tired of waiting for issue #1 that I ordered it from another eBay seller. Ironically, both copies of #1 arrived on the same day. I’m not giving any feedback for that first seller, nor will I buy from him again. Series is intriguing though.

G.I. Joe #5. Written by Joshua Williamson and art and cover art by Tom Reilly. Duke and his Joes are captured and tortured for info, but that is no problem. Meanwhile, Cobra Commander is planning a bomb to turn everyone in the radius of the bomb into mindless slaves to Cobra.

Challengers of the Unknown #4. “Red & Green.” Written by Christopher Cantwell and art by Sean Izaakse and Amancry Nahuelpan. Cover art was done by Izaakse & Romulo Fajardo Jr. Red leads a mission with Green Lantern and Captain Comet, leading to Red’s becoming paralyzed. There is a big time mystery surrounding the Challengers and the Omega Power and the JLU is getting a little nervous.

Deadpool/Wolverine #3. “Recruits.” Written by Benjamin Percy and art by Joshua Cassara. Joshua Cassara and GURU eFX did the cover art. Deadpool is under the control of a villain and he and Wolverine go at it… I mean, violently. Much more violence in this book than any of the Red Band books that have been polybagged.

Sabretooth: The Dead Don’t Talk #3-4. Written by Frank Tieri and art by Michael Sta. Maria. I missed issue 3 of this series so I had to wait on it too. I have to say that these two issues were way better than the first two issues. I was fully engaged with this story and I was upset over the unexpected death that occurred.

Potions Inc #1-2. Written by Erik Burnham and art by Stelladia. I picked these up on eBay, but honestly, I do not remember why. And I did not like these issues at all. I was just not interested in the story and I had trouble keeping my attention. There are three more issues in this mini series, but I do not plan on pursuing them further.

Magik #3. “Pacts” Written by Ashley Allen and art by German Peralta. Variant cover art B was done by Jenny Frison. Illyana makes a deal with Liminal that could see her rid herself of the Darkchilde for good. Will Dani Moonstar help her accomplish this?

Werewolf by Night: Red Band #8. Written by Jason Loo and penciled by Sergio Davila. E.M. Gist did the cover art. Jack Russell has become a ghost wolf while Elsa Bloodstone is trying to compile a team to come rescue him. Is it too little too late? And will Reptil be allowed to join them?

Daredevil: Unleash Hell Red Band #3. Written by Erica Schultz and penciled by Valentina Pinti and Jose Luis Soares. Variant cover C art by Peach Momoko. Things go poorly for Daredevil (Elektra) against the possessing spirit of Muse. I guess the next stage of the battle will be in literal Hell.

Question: All Along the Watchtower #5. “Into the Breach.” Written by Alex Segura with art by Cian Tormey & Raul Fernandez. Tormey & Romulo Fajardo Jr did the cover art. Renee breaks Batwoman out of Cyborg Superman’s control, but things really look bad for our heroes. The original Question makes an appearance (okay, maybe not the original one, I admit I do not know the history of the character. It just is not Renee).

The Rocketfellers #4. Written by Peter J. Tomasi and art and cover art by Francis Manapul. The Rocketfellers are continuing to hide out in the 21 Century while displaying skills that they have. The Rocketfellers are an interesting read but it can be difficult to follow at times. I just do not know the characters well enough yet.

Other books this week: Psylocke #5, Lawful #8, When I Lay My Vengeance Upon Thee #3, Sam Wilson: Captain America #3, SilverHawks #2, Zatanna #2, Blood Squad Seven #7, The New Gods #4, Mine is a Long, Lonesome Grave #2, Ultimate X-Men #13, Ultimate Black Panther #14, and The Power Fantasy #7.
