EYG Comic Cavalcade #178

November 16

Welcome back to the EYG Comic Cavalcade.

This week, Todd picked up some old Daredevils for me. I picked up Daredevil #173, 247-253, and 258. It was nice to get some of these books. I have not picked up a lot of back issues of DD, but I like filling out my collection.

Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #4. Written by W. Maxwell Prince and art by Martin Morazzo. Cover art was done by Martin Morazzo & Chris O’Halloran. The fourth issue of the Superman saga created by the Ice Cream Man creative team reaches its penultimate issue. Superman is in the imp dimension and they are all over the place. (Fun cover, right Todd?)

Batman: Dark Patterns #12. “The Child of Fire part 3” Written by Dan Watters and art and cover art by Hayden Sherman. I am sad to see this Batman series end with this issue. I have enjoyed this Dark Patterns book more than most DC books, if I am being honest. I usually am not a fan of the books that take place in the past continuity, but this was great, and it was awesome how they tied the parts together.

1776 #1. “Night Calls” Written by J. Michael Straczynski and penciled by Sean Damien Hill & Ron Lim. Pete Woods did the cover art. Several Marvel super heroes have to go back in time to the Revolutionary War to try and stop Morgan Le Fey from destroying America. I am not sure where the continuity fits, but that was still excellent.

Amazing Spider-Man: Torn #2. Written by J. Michael Straczynski and art by Pere Perez. Cover art was done by Mark Chiarello. Can J. Michael Straczynski write anything in the current Marvel Universe timeline? This Spidey story is back before the death of Gwen Stacy. It’s been good so far.

Spider-Man & Wolverine #7. “The Deaths of Spider-Man & Wolverine” Written by Marc Guggenheim and art and cover art by Kaare Andrews. I have been happier with this series since the first few where it did not feel like Spider-Man. Wolvie and Spidey wind up in a different dimension with a different Reed Richards.

American Caper #1. Written by Dan Houser & Lazlow with pencils by David Lapham. Cover art was done by Tyler Boss (Silver Medalist). New crime story featuring two very damaged families in the world of business. It’s one of the best new books of the week.

Redcoat #15. Written by Geoff Johns and art by Bryan Hitch. Cover art was done by Bryan Hitch & Brad Anderson. We see Simon has found himself a new life, wife and child. That is.. until Albert showed up with some bad news.

Fantastic Four #5. Written by Ryan North and penciled by Humberto Ramos. Cover art was done by Humberto Ramos and Edgar Delgado. We get a solo episode with Sue, trying to help with the Black Cat, who has been arrested for a murder she did not commit. Felicia needs help and Sue is not anxious to give it to her. Lots of fun with this story. I like a good self-contained story along the way.

Blue Falcon & Dynomutt #3. Written by Jimmy Palmiotti and art by Pasquale Qualand. Cover art was done by Lucio Parrillo (Bronze Medalist). Blue Falcon is in a lot of trouble. He is injured and being pursued. However, here comes Dyno-Mutt!!!!

New Avengers #6. Written by Sam Humphries and art by Ton Lima. Cover art was done by Stephen Segovia & Rain Beredo. Can we trust the Black Widow? Does she have a connection to the Killuminati? Maybe, but I do like this combination of heroes as Avengers.

Spider-Man ’94 #3. Writing by J.M. DeMatteis and art by Jim Towe. Cover art was done by Nick Bradshaw & Rachelle Rosenberg. Morlun is all over this issue as Peter has to fight off a clone creature. How does Kraven the Hunter fit into to everything.

We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us #6. Written by Matthew Rosenberg with art and cover art by Stefano Landini. This series comes to an end with a violent and shocking conclusion to the book. It feels like there is more to this story moving forward so I would not be surprised if there is another volume is approved.

Red Hulk #10. “Red Flag” Written by Benjamin Percy and art by Gabriel Guzman. Cover art was done by Geoff Shaw & Marte Gracia. This is a major lead in to the final of One World Under Doom. This is a final issue for this series.

Eddie Brock: Carnage #10. Written by Charles Soule and art and cover art by Jesus Saiz. Another final issue of the Carnage series. There is kind of a resolution with the conflict between Eddie and Carnage. It ends with a shocking moment where Carnage learns the identity of Peter Parker.

Spider-Girl #6. Written by Torunn Grønbekk and art by Diogenes Neves. Cover art was done by David Nakayama. Spider-Girl heads to Hawaii. Plus, the last page said that next issue would be “To Be Concluded.” I wonder if next issue is the final issue of this series? I have liked Spider-Girl so far so I hope it is just the conclusion of the story arc.

Rogue Storm #2. Written by Murewa Ayodele and art by Roland Boschi. Cover art was done by Humberto Ramos & Edgar Delgado. The Age of Revelation, X years later. Storm and Gambit meet up, searching for Rogue Red.

Strange Tales #2. Written by Jeremy Whitley and art by Bayleigh Underwood. Cover art was done by Bayleigh Underwood and Jim Campbell. Green Goblin needs a magical book and he has to go to the Sanctum Santorum to find it. However, Spider-Gwen in there to cause some trouble for him.

Gunpowder Prophets #2. Written by Justin Jordan and art by Patrick Piazzalunga. Cover art was done by Patrick Piazzalunga and Roman Stevens. Marley and Huck are being pursued by a bunch of people on motorcycles. I feel bad for those people on the motorcycles. A very violent book.

Sinister’s Six #2. Written by David Marquez and art by Rafael Loureiro. Cover art was done by David Marquez & GURU-eFX. Age of Revelation. X Years later. This is down the list for me of this Age of Revelation books. I’m not sure that this one is that necessary. It’s still fine, though.

Iron & Frost #2. Written by Cavan Scott and art by Ruairi Coleman. Cover art was done by Ryan Brown. Age of Revelation. X Years later. Tony Stark, Emma Frost, James Rhodes… and what is going on with these characters. I do like the chemistry between Emma and Tony.

Spider-Man Noir #2. Written by Erik Larsen and art by Andrea Broccardo. Simone Di Meo did the cover art. Spider-Man Noir is back and fighting Nazis in America. And he is trying to break the news to his client Gwen Stacy that he was the one to shoot her father, who was a crooked cop. Or is there more to this than we know?

Liquidator #1. Written by Peter Milligan and art and cover art by Piotr Kowalski. I have gotten to a point where a new number one issue from Mad Cave is worth picking up just because. Liquidator #1 is really solid story with time travel involved.

Transformers #26. Written by Robert Kirkman and art by Dan Mora. Cover art was done by David Nakayama. The new arc with the Transformers continues going here. We get some look in on the human side of this new arc. This is starting to be intriguing.

C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #3. Written by Tom Taylor and art by Daniele Di Nicuolo. Cover art was done by Daniele Di Nicuolo and Rain Beredo. The kids with their talking weapons meet with a new individual… Merlin! This has been fun so far and I do love Tom Taylor.

Youngblood #1. Written and penciled by Rob Liefeld. Variant cover E art done by Daniel Warren Johnson. The return of this classic Image book with Rob Liefeld came out this weekend. I was unfamiliar with this group and this book was fine. I do not think I am continuing with it.

The City Beneath Her Feet #2. Written by James Tynion IV and art and cover art was done by Elsa Charretier. This has been a long time coming. The biggest problem with DSTLRY books is the release schedule. I enjoyed this book though. It always takes so long to get the memory of the story back.

Other Books this Week: Marvel: Black, White & Blood and Guts #2, The Power Fantasy #13, Red Vector #4, The Author Immortal #2, Batman Static Beyond #1, Death to Pachuco #2, Event Horizon: Dark Descent #3, and Blood & Thunder #7.

Quick Hits: The Marvel Ultimate universe is coming to an end soon, or at least that was what it seems. Ultimate Black Panther #22 and Ultimate Wolverine #11 came out this week. The final issue of Mr. Terrific: Year One #6 came out. I am not a big fan of this mini series. Godzilla is back and everywhere. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Godzilla #1 came from ID and Godzilla Escapes the Dead Zone #4 are new this week. Of course, we don’t see much, if anything, of Godzilla in the Dead Zone. Godzilla is the Wolverine or Punisher of 2025. We get more of the white Black Panther in The World to Come. We also go into a galaxy far, far away twice this week with Star Wars #7 and Star Wars: Han Solo-Hunt for the Falcon #3. We get Conan the Barbarian #26 with some bristling barbarian action. Our gold medalist winning cover was from Stephanie Hans on Die Loaded #1. And then there was the oddly titled Die!Namite #2 where, on the last page, Red Sonja joins the fun.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #172

September 29

Trying to catch up after the SiouxperCon last weekend. I think I am pretty close. Most of the films and TV shows are back on track, and I just have to get the Comic Cavalcade back on a regular schedule. I was able to get most everything read and I am ready for the write-up.

Books this week:

Mark Spears Monsters #7. “All That Remains.” Written, art and cover art by Mark Spears. Cover F was the Gold Medalist this week. This comic has a bunch of great covers once again. Every time the book comes out, there are so many excellent Mark Spears covers. I have been enjoying the story too.

Sleep #5. Written, drawn and cover art by Zander Cannon. I actually had this copy last weekend at SiouxperCon when I went to Zander Cannon’s booth. He had an early copy of the book and I got it signed. This week I got the issue from my pull list. This has been an excellent book.

Wild Animals #3. Written by Ed Brisson and art and cover art by Andy Kuhn. Speaking of an excellent book, Wild Animals has been one of my favorite books so far. It is a revenge story that really has me guessing about what is next. Wild Animals has been so fantastic so far that it make me anxious for the next issue.

Justice League Unlimited #11. Written by Mark Waid with art by Carmine Di Giandomenico. Cover art was done by Dan Mora. This issue of the JLU is a prelude to the next big DC event, DC KO, which is expected to lead to the return of Darkseid. If what is happening on the Watchtower is any example, things are not going to be good for our heroes.

The Twilight Zone #1. “Blanks” Written by Dan Watters and art and cover art by Morgan Beem. I was excited about the debut of this new Twilight Zone comic from IDW. I enjoyed this first issue as it had a definite feel as the original TV show did. It was in black and white, which helped create the tone of the series. The story did feel like it ended quickly, but that is something that some Twilight Zone episodes felt like too. A good start for this book.

Conan: Scourge of the Serpent #1. “Stealing Faces & Finery.” Written by Grim Jim Zub with art by Ironclad Ivan Gil. Cover art was done by Roberto De La Torre. This story kicks off with three men from three different eras: Conan, Kull, and Professor John Kirowan. Let’s see where this one takes us.

The Last Starship #1. Written by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly with art by Adrian Bonilla. Cover art was done by Francesco Francavilla. This was another new IDW book that I just picked up because it was on the stand. I have been enjoying the Red Shirts book and so I thought having this number one would be fun. Then, I really loved the book and the story it was telling. Starfleet was viciously attacked and most of their major starships were destroyed, leaving one more. This was very compelling and surprised me.

Hyde Street #9. Written by Geoff Johns and art by Francis Portella. Cover art was done by Ivan Reis & Danny Miki with Brad Anderson. Plastic surgery can be a great use for horror stories because of how terrible things could be, and Hyde Street uses it as a wonderful bit to make these characters all the more sad.

Escape #2. “No Trees Tomorrow.” Written by Rick Remender with art and cover art by Daniel Acuna. We get some background information prior to Milton’s efforts in the war in Nuropia. Escape is more than just another anthropomorphic comic. It gives me a little feel about Maus.

Spider-Man & Wolverine #5. “Consequences.” Written by Marc Guggenheim and art by Kaare Andrews. Cover art was done by Cory Smith. I had to buy the 1:25 variant because the regular issue was sold out before I could get to it. This was my favorite issue of this series so far because Spider-Man felt like Spider-Man. I have been disappointed with this book, but this issue helped me see Spider-Man in th estory.

The Phantom #1. Written by Ray Fawkes and art by Russell Olson. Cover art was done by Freddie Williams II, who also did the variant cover that won the Bronze Medal this week. The EYG Hall of Fame iconic character The Phantom is back in the new Mad Cave comic. Phantom kicks this off with some great action and new character work.

News from the Fallout #4. Written by Chris Condon and art and cover art by Jeffrey Alan Love. Variant cover art by James Harren. This has been such a good book so far. I love the different art style and the way they present the story.

Ultimate Spider-Man #21. Written by Jonathan Hickman and art by David Messina. Cover art was done by Marco Checchetto & Matthew Wilson. Another issue of Ultimate Spider-Man that does not have Spider-Man. We focus in on Mister Negative here and it is really solid.

The Mortal Thor #2. “Storm Warning.” Written by Al Ewing with art by Pasqual Ferry. Cover art was done by Alex Ross. Sigurd comes out in a massively brutal fighting style. Spinning that hammer around on the chain… whoa. It was remarkable.

All-New Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider #2. Written by Stephanie Phillips and art by Paolo Villanelli. Cover art was done by David Marquez & Marte Gracia. Spider-Gwen has a bit of a temper. I am not sure where that came from but she was blowing up at people throughout this issue.

Universal Monsters: The Invisible Man #2. “Chapter Two: Things Men Should Leave Alone.” Written by James Tynion IV with art by Dani. Cover art by Dani & Brad Simpson. I also got variant cover B with art by Mike Del Mundo (Silver Medalist). Another great use of a Universal Monster character.

Space Ghost #3. Written by David Pepose with art by Jonathan Lau. Cover art by Francesco Mattina. Tarko the Terrible was frozen in a block of ice, and they pulled a Captain America thaw out, bringing the powerful danger to the present day.

Viking Moon #1. Written by Joe Pruett with art and cover art by Marcelo Frusin. How could you ask for more? Vikings and werewolves? I mean…come on. This was way cool. I will continue on with this new Image book.

Black Cat #2. “II: Your Friendly Neighborhood Cat Lady.” Written by G. Willow Wilson with art by Gleb Melnikov. Adam Hughes did the cover art. Superhero Black Cat feels a little weird to Felicia Hardy, but she has been coming across plenty of trouble. And she seemed as if she was drooling over Daredevil (Can you blame her?).

Detective Comics #1101. “The Courage That Kills Part One.” Written by Tom Taylor and art and cover was done by Mikel Janin. A new storyline with Batman kicks off here and Tom Taylor brings the excellence once again. It’s a virus storyline and Batman is stuck in quarantine.

X-Men #22. “Dawning of an Age.” Written by Jed MacKay with art by C.F. Villa. Cover art was done by Ryan Stegman & Marte Gracia. Doug Ramsey comes to join the X-Men. Doug Ramsey is the heir of Apocalypse, going by the name of Revelation. The final shot of the issue shows that things are not going to be good as the Age of Revelation starts next month.

Daredevil #25. “Rites of Reconciliation” Part Six. Written by Saladin Ahmed and penciled by Jose Luis Soares. Cover art was done by John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna, and Richard Isanove. This is the final issue of Daredevil, which shocked me. Daredevil and Elektra make a change in their relationship status and they have to fight a brutal Kingpin.

Battleworld #1. Written by Christos Gage with art by Marcus To. Cover art by Leinil Francis Yu & Romulo Fajardo Jr. A group of heroes from different universes are pulled together by Korvac to battle. It was interesting to see these heroes in different places of their lives or different formats of their careers. Maestro is here and I love him. Young Spider-Man. King Thor. Old Hank Pym. Ms. Marvel aka Carol Danvers. Lots of interesting interactions.

Spider-Girl #4. Written by Torunn Grønbekk and art by Andre Risso and Moises Hidalgo. Cover art was done by David Nakayama. Spider-Girl is in action, and her efforts bring out a special guest star, the Amazing Spider-man.

The Thing #5. “The King of Yancy Street” Conclusion. Written by Tony Fleecs and art by Justin Mason. Cover art was done by Nick Bradshaw & Rachelle Rosenberg. The Thing’s little solo adventure trying to protect a little girl comes to its conclusion with this issue. I do enjoy Ben Grimm and he showed his power.

Other books this week: Mr. Terrific Year One #5, Endless Night #4, Predator: Black, White & Blood #3, New History of the DC Universe #3, Sherlock Holmes The Dark Detective: Knights of Frankenstein #3, Emma Frost: White Queen #4, Silverhawks #8, Red Vector #2, and Zdarsky Comic News #15.

Quick Hits: Things are getting tougher for Zach and Rose in Hornsby & Halo #10. Rose is starting to show some of her darkness and anger. Vision & Scarlet Witch #5 brings this short series to a close and we return Vision to his original state. It was nice to see Viv Vision back once again. I am not sure how I am feeling about the Death of Silver Surfer #4. I was not a big fan of this issue. Void Rivals #23 continues its major war and battles between the two worlds. Absolute Wonder Woman #12 introduces us to the Absolute Zatanna and Hippolyta finds out Diana is alive. The futuristic Batman in Immortal Legend Batman #2 was a little less interesting than last issue. Godzilla is bringing the pain and the power into the Marvel Universe in Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #3. The X-Men give it their all. The Ultimate universe expanded a bit with Ultimate Hawkeye #1 (one shot). The Thunder War concludes in Storm #12 with several guest stars who think they are storm gods. This is another series ending before the Age of Revelation. I do not know if the Storm book returns after that X-event or if it gets a reboot. Far Down Below #5 is a great Mad Cave book that also sees its final issue this week. Blue Palo Verde #4 was really weird this week. I found it to be less engaging as I did before. Then there was more bayou crime action in The Voice Said Kill #3. One more of those to go.

EYG Favorite Comic Covers of the Week

August 22

My school’s open house on Thursday made it impossible to get down to Bettendorf to get my comics, so I could not do the comic covers yesterday. Henceforth…Friday!

Then, trying to get to In This Issue Comic tonight was a nightmare. Between an off-ramp that I always take being closed and a wreck on the alternate path, it was crazy. Other cars frustrated the heck out of me and I may have uttered a curse word or fifty. I was battling the clock too since the shop closed at 5. I made it with about 30 minutes to spare.

Good week of covers. One variant. Two original covers. One of two covers by our cover artist leader for 2025.

Also-Rans: Hyde Street #8, Falling in Love on the Path to Hell #9, Superman Unlimited #4, All-New Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider #1 (Cover D), They Choose Violence #3, The Department of Truth #33, Escape #1, All-New Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider #1, The Vision & Scarlet Witch #4, and Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #3.

Bronze Medalist

Amazing Spider-Man #10

Cover art by John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna & Marcio Menyz

I loved the design of this cover as it is made to look like the Daily Bugle featuring a story on the “Brutal Side of Spider-Man.” I love the creativity of the concept and the design.

Silver Medalist

Space Quest #4

Cover art by Mark Spears

Another wonderful Spears cover featuring Space Ghost and Jonny Quest. There is a haunting look in the eyes of Jonny and the ghost-like qualities of Space Ghost standout beautifully. I love the smokey background and the colors too. Just an all around strong cover.

Gold Medalist

Nightwing #129

Variant Cover B

Cover art by Jorge Fornes

I saw this on the rack in Bettendorf today and this one too my breath away. I already had the A cover, but I could not turn away from this amazing piece of art. It wins a really strong week.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #160

July 4

Happy Fourth of July, everyone! I know that the world is a difficult place these days with a ton of divisiveness in our country, but hopefully we can all stop for one day and embrace the wonder of being an American. That is what is really big and beautiful.

Books this week:

Nightwing #101-108. Continuing my dive into Tom Taylor’s run on Nightwing. I am stuck at this point waiting for #109 to arrive from eBay. I really am enjoying this book so far. I love how Tom Taylor gives Dick Grayson a distinct voice and how Taylor can give all of these secondary characters Dick’s orbit their own special voice.

Captain America #1. Written by Chip Zdarsky with art by Valerio Schiti. I have two covers for this book. Cover A art is done by Ben Harvey while Cover G is the Netease Games Marvel Rivals Variant. Steve Rogers is back in the 12th volume of Captain America as we see some of the story around his beginnings as Captain America. Chip Zdarsky is one of my favorite writers and I am excited to see what he can bring to Cap.

Batman: The Detective #1-6. I saw an advertisement for this mini-series in one of the Nightwing books and I went to eBay and ordered it. This is more of my deep dive into Tom Taylor and this book told a future story of Batman, seemingly around the Dark Knight time and it was just so good. I buzzed through this series quickly. Top notch Batman.

X-Men #19. “Revelation.” Written by Jed MacKay and penciled by Netho Diaz. Ryan Stegman & Marte Gracia did the cover art. Doug Ramsey had become the heir to Apocalypse last year and we have not seen him since. Here the story is devoted to Doug fully and is clearly setting up the next arc for the X-Men.

Detective Comics: Mercy of the Father softcover. Written by Tom Taylor and art by Mikel Janin. Remember when I just mentioned that Batman: The Detective was “top notch Batman?” Well, this collection of Detective Comics #1090-1096 is one of the best Batman books I have ever read. Tom Taylor is brilliant in this book and he developed such deep characters and amazing situations to toss the Dark Knight into. He uses the world so effortlessly that it feels as if I was reading Batman for the first time, incorporating history in ways that enrichen the story, not reframing it. This is really good stuff.

Avengers #28. “Masters of Evil” Finale. Written by Jed MacKay with art by Andrea Broccardo. Valerio Schiti and Federico Blee were the cover artists. Black Panther and Captain America are down to the final struggle against the Mad Thinker. I think this arc has helped revitalize the Mad Thinker as a top level villain.

Daredevil #23. “Rites of Reconciliation” Part Four. Written by Saladin Ahmed and penciled by Carlos Nieto & Jose Luis Soares. Taskmaster has been paid to take out Daredevil, the “dude version.” What happened when Elektra Daredevil showed up?

Immortal Thor #25. “The Twilight Kingdom.” Written by Al Ewing with art by Jan Bazaldua, Justin Greenwood & Pasqual Ferry. Cover art was done by Alex Ross. So Thor’s dead, huh? Well, kind of I guess. This does finish the arc of Thor written by Al Ewing, which has been very solid, though perhaps not his greatest work (that is still Immortal Hulk, I believe). This is like the prelude to the next Thor series, The Mortal Thor.

All-New Venom #8. Written by Al Ewing and art by Carlos Gomez. Adam Kubert & Laura Martin are the cover artists. Mary Jane is the all-new Venom and she is taking on one of her ex-husband’s classic villains in Doctor Octopus.

Sisterhood: A Hyde Street Story #1. Written by Maytal Zchut and art by Leila Leiz. Leila Leiz & Alex Sinclair are the cover artists. Sophie and Violet were lifelong friends who were drifting apart at college. When Violet drowns, Sophie takes some drastic measures that you just shouldn’t do on Hyde Street.

Grim #23. “Play the Game.” Written by Stephanie Phillips and illustrated and cover art by Flaviano. Jessica Harrow has three questions that she must ask and the supernatural being she wants the answers from is End. This issue really did feel like a series conclusion, as Jessica seems to end up in a very final place, but I guess there is another book in October. This was a solid read, but Grim coming out quarterly has hurt the flow of the series.

Absolute Green Lantern #4. “Chaotic Action.” Written by Al Ewing and art and cover art by Jahnoy Lindsay. Jo confronts Oa, which has to be right because it rhymes. Absolute Green Lantern has been intriguing because of the differences that this series has taken. I still like the arc for Hal Jordan so far.

Amazing Spider-Man #7. Written by Joe Kelly and penciled by John Romita Jr. Variant cover art was done by Doaly. Spider-Man faces off with the mysterious new “villain,” Hellgate. This issue reminded me of some of those old Spidey classics such as Amazing Spider-Man #229-230 where Spidey took on the Juggernaut and Amazing Spider-Man #269-270 where he battled Firelord. Spidey felt outmatched but never surrendered and found a way to win. Here, of course, it may only be temporary.

Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider #15. “Uncharted” Part 5. Written by Stephanie Phillips and art by Von Randal. This is the final issue of this volume of Spider-Gwen before she gets an official restart in August. This issue does everything I wanted… got rid of the Cosmic Cube, the symbiote costume, over-powered Gwen and returned her to her original statis. I am very excited about that as I have not been liking the powered up Gwen character the last few issues.

Ultimate Wolverine #7. Written by Chris Condon and art by Alessandro Cappuccio. Alessandro Cappuccio and Frank Martin were the cover artists. Logan reunites with his old mates, though several of them are a little suspicious of the former Winter Soldier. Illyana is making her machinations.

Sam & Twitch Case Files #15. Written by Jordan Barel with additional script by Todd McFarlane and art by Thomas Nachlik. Marco Failla & Don Aguillo are the cover artists (Silver Medalist). Things are not looking good for Sam and the investigation into the shooting case against his partner Twitch takes a deadly turn.

You Never Heard of Me #5. Written by Iolanda Zanfardino and illustrated by Elisa Romboli. This was a difficult book to get my hands on. It was not ordered at Comic World, sold out at In This Issue and nowhere to be found in Des Moines (thanks to Todd for turning over every rock he could think of). I finally went to eBay to pick up this issue, which was the finale for this series. It does feel like a happy ending for this book.

X-Men: Hellfire Vigil #1. Cover art by Luciano Vecchio & Nolan Woodard. A massive group of writers and artists worked on this book, which saw all of the major mutants of the world coming together as a vigil for Krakoa. It felt like a book giving us ideas on where the stories of the mutants were heading over the next year plus. I did not expect to be as intrigued by this book as I was.

Wolverines and Deadpools #1. Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Rogê Antonio. Cover art was done by Alessandro Cappuccio & Marte Gracia. I have been feeling tired of Wolverine & Deadpool team ups in the comics. I have been skipping some of the latest Deadpool books too. It was just tiring. So I was truly shocked when I read this first issue and found it to be exceptional. I really enjoyed the banter between Laura and Ellie, and Wade did not feel as out of control as he has in the past. Logan and Wade bonding over parenting? More of that please.

Whatever Happened to the Crimson Justice #2. Written by Frank Tieri and art and cover art by Inaki Miranda. John has no intentions of returning to his life as Crimson Justice. However, Mayhem has a different plan. This has been a good Mad Cave book with some excellent world building going on basically without a main hero.

Pop Kill #1. Yes, this is a second printing of number one with yet another new cover. The cover art was done by Dave Johnson. This series has been known for some of the best variant covers of the year not drawn by Mark Spears.

Other books this week: Lady Baltimore: The Daughter of Medusa #2, Conan the Barbarian #17-18, Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma #4, Uncanny X-Men: Prelude to a Future Past #104.5, Plague House #4, Bug Wars #5 and Storm #8.

Quick Hits: I was at the shop in Bettendorf and I saw Charlamagne Tha God Presents Illuminati #1 on the shelf from AWA. The cover was appealing, but I did not grab it at first. I tried to resist, but I eventually succumbed and grabbed it. AWA has had some interesting books recently. The

Chamberlains #2 was out this week from Keenspot. It is a solid horror book. Another book that I picked up for fun was Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest #2. I had picked up number one and I have always liked the Ghostbusters and this issue captured some of the humor of that franchise. It has been a huge week for the King of the Monsters, Godzilla! Godzilla vs. Thor #1 (Gold Medalist for its variant cover), two covers for Godzilla Heist #5 (Cover B a Bronze Medalist) and Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #2 all came out and were all a lot of fun. It was nice to see a book from DSTLRY once again as Warm Fusion #3 came out. I did not remember anything about that book sadly. The release schedule for DSTLRY has been a major drawback to some of these awesome books. Todd made fun of me for picking up Comics of the Movement #1 this week. It is a historical comic and is presented in an original manner. What is not to like? I grabbed two covers of the Bring on the Bad Guys: Green Goblin #1 book this week. I have the A cover and the cover featuring Sister Sorrow. Finally, I grabbed a back issue from Comic World of Sergio Aragones The Groo Chronicles #4. I had no idea this series was out and I may need to search the rest of these down.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #159

June 29

June is almost gone. It went really quickly as it always does during the summer months. I have just over a month and a half before I have to go back to work.

This past week my official comic collection count broke 18,000. I am so pleased that I can actually tell you what my number is. I am so happy about getting my collection organized a few years back and EYG was a big motivation. I love my CLZ app which puts the books in order and counts them.

Books this week:

Nightwing #78-100. This is the pack of books I got from eBay that officially put me over the 18,000 number. I decided to start picking up the Nightwing book and I went back to grab as much of the Tom Taylor written books as I could. I actually love Taylor from his work on a short series called Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. It was like 14 or 15 issues and it was some of the best Spidey writing I have ever read. Tom Taylor understood Spidey so well that I was sad when the series ended. I really enjoyed his take on Dick Grayson too and I was really engaged with this book and the great villains Heartless and Blockbuster.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #34. “God War Part III” Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Marco Renna. Federico Vicentini & Rachelle Rosenberg did the cover art. Miles continues with his war in the name of Anansi against Ares. Honestly, this storyline has not been my favorite one so far. I do like Hercules guest starring, but this all feels just too much.

Predator vs. Spider-Man #2. Written by Benjamin Percy and penciled by Marcelo Ferreira. Cover art was done by Paulo Siqueira & Ven Nitro. The Predators are on earth looking for their rogue predator and Spider-Man is in the middle.

Don’t Forget Your Briefcase #1. Written by Eliot Rahal with art and cover art by Phillip Sevy. A new Mad Cave book dealing directly with the “nuclear football” carried by the President of the United States. It had a thriller feel to it and I loved this one. Another hit from Mad Cave for me.

Spider-Boy #20. “Chapter 3: With a Little Help From My Friends.” Written by Dan Slott and art by Paco Medina. Cover art was done by Paco Medina & Edgar Delgado. Spider-Boy’s book comes to an end with this issue. Spider-Boy and Spider-Man make up from their forced fight last issue. A bunch of guest stars make appearances in Bailey’s final issue.

Dark Pyramid #4. Written by Paul Tobin and art and cover art by PJ Holden. The Dark Pyramid book has really gone weird and wild. This is the penultimate issue of the series and I am just not sure what is going to happen. I never would have guessed the bizarre twists this book would take back when Hooky Hidalgo disappeared in issue one.

Minor Arcana #8. Written by Jeff Lemire and illustrated by Letizia Cadonici. Cover art was done by Jeff Lemire. The big reopening falls flat and Teresa is out and about. And who is this Wayne fella? I do love Jeff Lemire’s work and this has been very consistent.

The Thing #2. “The King of Yancy Street Part Two.” Written by Tony Fleecs and art by Justin Mason. Nick Bradshaw & Rachelle Rosenberg. Bullseye arrived on Yancy Street and is taking on The Thing. Hammerhead is here too. Aunt Petunia’s baby boy is taking on the criminal empire with Kingpin as well.

Justice League Unlimited #8. “All Hail Grodd.” Written by Mark Waid and art and cover art by Dan Mora. The Gorilla Grodd storyline comes to an end with a bunch of Justice League members from across time coming to help stop the Legion of Doom. It seemed as if those out of time JLers are stuck in this timeline. What is going to happen?

Moonshine Bigfoot #3. Written by Mike Marlow & Zach Howard and penciled by Steve Ellis. Moonshine Bigfoot is such a fun book. It is the X-Files meets Duke of Hazzard. This has been one of the more enjoyable Image books lately. Such a creative idea to put a bigfoot in a car as a moonshiner. This is also a penultimate issue.

Incredible Hulk #26. “Soldier and Flame.” Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and art by Kev Wilson. Cover art is done by Nic Klein. Bucky Barnes gives Charlie a warning that the Hulk is dangerous and that she needed to find Banner. Hulk and Charlie had some disagreements and split apart. How will the Hulk take this?

Rocketfellers #6. Written by Peter J. Tomasi and art and cover art by Francis Manapul. Rae gets suddenly sick and has to be rushed to the hospital. And the big takeaway from this issue is that you should just not mess around with Rex, the Rocketfellers’ dog.

Void Rivals #20. Written by Robert Kirkman and art by Conor Hughes. Lorenzo De Felici did the cover art. Solila is facing Darak’s father and the rest of his guards. Darak was there conflicted as heck.

Hyde Street #7. Written by Geoff Johns and art by Ivan Reis & Danny Miki. Cover art was done by Ivan Reis & Danny Miki with Brad Anderson. Pranky wanted to capture the one and only Matinee Monster. Pranky can turn into a werewolf I guess. Hyde Street has been a fun horror themed book over the last seven issues and it looks to be continuing on.

The Department of Truth #31. Written by James Tynion IV with art by Letizia Cadonici. Cover art was done by Martin Simmonds. This felt like a totally different issue of Department of Truth as the main focus was a monster/killer called The Hatman. This did feel outside of what we were used to for this series, and it was kind of refreshing. James Tynion IV is another writer that I trust completely.

Out of Alcatraz #4. “Whiskeytown.” Written by Christopher Cantwell and illustrated and cover art by Tyler Crook. Yet another penultimate issue this week as there are five issues in this Oni Press story. It is enjoyable every week as we follow along with the escapees from the inescapable prison.

Assorted Crisis Events #4. Written by Deniz Camp and art and cover art by Eric Zawadzki. This being an anthology series, some issues do not work as well as others. However, I can say that this was definitely my favorite issue of this series so far, and possibly my favorite issue of the week. Time flies. I loved the color design of this issue and the story was tremendous. I hope more of this series is as high quality as issue four was.

Universal Monsters: The Mummy #4. Written and drawn by Faith Erin Hicks and the cover art was done by Faith Erin Hicks and Lee Loughridge. The latest of the Universal Monsters mini-series closed with the end of the Mummy. The look of this comic worked really well for the tone they were going for, but the story was not my favorite of the Universal Monsters so far. Still, it is a solid four issues and I am excited about the upcoming Invisible Man.

Feral #14. Written by Tony Fleecs with art by Trish Forstner and Tone Rodriguez. Cover A art was by Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner. I also got Cover B which had art by the same pair (Silver Medalist). Our cats have found their way into the pet shop but have realized that there is a whole new society inside that they have to adapt into. Not sure it will last for long.

News from the Fallout #1. “Chapter One: Red Snow.” Written by Chris Condon and art and cover art by Jeffrey Alan Love. Oh, I loved this new series from Image Comics. More story about the possible nuclear fallout of a bomb, and what exactly would happen to the people who had been exposed. This is beautifully designed and the black and white made this feel special.

Ultimate Spider-Man #18. Written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Marco Checchetto. Marco Checchetto and Matthew Wilson did the cover art. Peter Parker is once again reunited with harry Osborn. Harry comes to see Peter with news and the pair return to New York to take care of business. Little did Peter know that Richard hitched a ride with them to see Black Cat. A perfect example of hormones getting a teenager in trouble.

Sleep #2. Written, drawn and cover art by Zander Cannon. I also picked up the cover B which was done by Tim Seeley (Gold Medalist). Sleep has been a great book so far as the mystery of what is going on in this town when Jon is asleep is excellent. Jon gets himself arrested so he can be in the jail cell when he sleeps. I am guessing that will not prevent anything in particular.

Spider-Man & Wolverine #2.Spider-Man vs. Wolverine.” Written by Marc Guggenheim and art and cover art by Kaare Andrews. Earlier I talked about how Tom Taylor really understood the character of Peter Parker (and hence Spider-Man). Here seems to be a book that has zero clue about Peter. Spider-Man and Wolverine fight over the possibility of Logan having killed Peter’s parents. Peter goes quite feral in this book, screaming that he was going to kill Logan. I just kept thinking that Peter would never do this and that, even if he would have gone after Logan, he would not have been trying to kill him. Very disappointed with this book.

Fantastic Four #33. “Fantastic Four Hundred and Thirty-Six Quadrillion.” Written by Ryan North and penciled by Cory Smith. Cover art was done by Joshua Cassara & Dean White. Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state, then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started, wait... Bazinga. The FF head back to the Big Bang to try and fix Ben’s powers cause it… It all started with the big bang, bang!

Uncanny X-Men #16. “The Voice of Darkness.” Written by Gail Simone and art by David Marquez & Luciano Vecchio. David Marquez & Matthew Wilson did the cover art. The Dark Artery story comes to a close with this issue as the X-Men face the people of the dead city, Penumbra. Thanks for coming Man-Thing!

Deadpool #15. Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Rogê Antonio. Taurin Clarke did the cover art. This is Legacy number 350 for the Merc with a Mouth and served as the final issue of this run for Deadpool (who will be back very soon in a series called Deadpools and Wolverines). There is also a back up story here with Deadpool Samurai by writer Kasama Sanshiro and artist Uesugi Hikaru. It is from the back of the book forward like the anime that it followed.

Other books this week: Dark Honor #2, The Seasons #5, Conan the Barbarian #20, Absolute Martian Manhunter #4, Blade Forger #4, Green Lantern Dark #5, When I Lay My Vengeance Upon Thee #5, and Mr. Terrific Year One #2.

Quick Hits: The Doctor Doom storyline continues with both Superior Avengers #3 and Doom Academy #5 coming out this week. Doom Academy is the final issue of that said book. I do enjoy the Strange Academy kids so I look forward to them returning in the future. Crush Depth#4 is another penultimate issue as this undersea story gets even crazier this issue. Absolute Wonder Woman #9 keeps diving into Greek mythology as Diana finds herself facing off with a minotaur. Two of these are now over as In Bloom #5 and Who are the Power Pals #4 end their runs with fun issues. DC, looking for brand new ways to get us to buy Absolute #1 issues, have reprinted Absolute Superman #1, Absolute Wonder Woman #1, and Absolute Batman #1 once again, but this time with a Mark Spears connecting cover on each (Bronze Medalist). The three covers together are a thing of beauty without a doubt. There is also a New History of the DC Universe #1 out this week with all kinds of cool little tidbits. This is the NEW history. Wouldn’t that be an oxymoron? More serial killer action with You’ll Do Bad Things #4 came out this week. Ms. Marvel and Legion continue their romp through the X-Men history (could this be like the NEW history DC is talking about?) with Giant-Size Age of Apocalypse #1. Not sure how I feel about any of these books with Ms. Marvel. I do love me some Kamala, but this feels, at best, meh. I did pick up the foil variant of The Death of the Silver Surfer #1. It was just a pretty looking cover. Finally this week, We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us #4 has some explosive realizations inside.

“Hero or Menace”

“If This Be My Destiny…”

The finale two episodes of the first season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man are absolutely amazing!

In episode nine, we get a big showdown between Spidey and Scorpion, with Lonny smack dab in the middle. Lonny gets exposed to a gas that gives him super strength (and will eventually turn him into the Tombstone we know in the comics). Spidey and Lonny defeat Scorpion.

In episode ten, we have a big battle with Dr. Strange and the symbiote and we are shown that this battle is what would lead to the battle from the first episode at Peter’s school, and the spider that bit Peter was the spider that Norman had created with Spider-Man’s blood that they had collected. I loved that adjustment in the story. It made everything work for me.

The writing on this series has been excellent. It has developed more than just Peter Parker. I feel like they built the supporting characters around Peter so well, especially Lonny who could arguably be considered a co-lead character. They show us the beginning of several villains in the Spider-Man world, like Otto Octavius, Scorpion, Norman Osborn, Venom etc.

With Spider-Man’s actual suit debuting in episode nine, Spider-Man looked sensational. The animation of these episodes were so great with some amazing shots. I have not necessarily loved the animation prior, but this seemed to really be something special.

The voice acting did great all season long. Everything was excellent, especially Coleman Domingo, who was so epic. I would love to see Domingo play Norman Osborn in the MCU. The show has done a great job of slowly building Norman into who we expect he will become. And yet, it feels very justified.

I did not expect this series to be great because recent Spider-Man animation has been more directed toward very young children. This series was right up there with the best Spider-Man series and right there with X-Men ’97. I am happy that this series has a three season order so there are at least two more to go.

I love Spider-Man.

Spoilers

“Duel with the Devil”

“Scorpion Rising”

“Tangled Web”

The next three episodes of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man dropped on Disney + today and, boy, they were epic. I really liked how the three episodes worked together a story seeing Spider-Man get his butt kicked a couple of different times.

Daredevil showed up… and voiced by Charlie Cox. Spidey and DD fought, with Daredevil showing the inexperienced Spider-Man what a real fighter was like.

Then the arrival of Scorpion led to Spidey getting beaten so bad that he was nearly killed.

Lonny kept his downward spiral towards Tombstone going as he imbedded himself into the 110 Street gang even more. Pearl discovered his involvement and things went poorly.

There were some great scenes with Nico and Harry as they begin to show some signs of a connection. The whole Nico drag racing scene was a lot of fun and teased the powers that Nico have.

Otto Octavius is arrested… by Iron Man? We get a hint at his future with the octopus arms working separately from Ock.

Having Norman Osborn do the “Great Responsibility” line and switch it around to make it “Great Responsibility – Great Respect” fits the character well. It is a really awesome, unexpected turn.

And we are just about to have the actual Spider-Man suit, as we got a giant tease at the very end of episode 8.

There are just two more episodes remaining in season one and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has been an excellent Spider-Man animated show. It is well written and blended together well.

Spoilers

“Secret Identity Crisis”

“Hitting the Big Time”

“The Unicorn Unleashed”

The second week of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man on Disney + saw the release of three new episodes. Three solid episodes again this week as we see several new interpretations of Spider-villains as well as the debut of one of the most iconic ones.

The dual story of Peter’s rise as Spider-Man and Lonnie Lincoln’s downward spiral to Tombstone is fascinating. They are spending a ton of time building the character of Tombstone to become, perhaps, the big bad of the series, long term.

But we also got our first look at Otto Octavius, pre-Octopus arms. It is revealed that Octavius is behind the weapons that have been showing up around New York.

We got a version of Speed Demon, Unicorn and who will eventually (I think) become Rhino.

Harry Osborn is brought into the “Team Spider-Man” by Norman. Norman said that he couldn’t always be available, but his son could. The Peter-Harry friendship is starting to develop, even though Harry seems to be becoming Peter’s Ned Leeds in this cartoon.

This is also interesting since the show is using the Iron Man/Captain America MCU storyline as a backdrop. I assume they will show up sooner or later.

My biggest problem I have in this show is the fact that everybody wears the same clothes every time. I know it is meant to identify these characters, but it is becoming very odd. I want Peter in something besides that yellow shirt and blue jacket.

I would say that the animation style is still a little distracting, but the storytelling has been top notch so far.

“Amazing Fantasy”

“The Parker Luck”

There is no fictional character that means more to me than Peter Parker. I have spent my entire life loving Spider-Man. He has been an inspiration to me and my own core beliefs come from him. Every time I see a new Spider-Man project, I am both excited and a little nervous.

Nervous because there is always a chance that the project will be bad. I have gone through that a few times. And to be honest, seeing the initial images from Disney +’s new Spider-Man series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, I was a little more nervous than usual.

However, after seeing the first two episodes of season one, my fears were alleviated. I loved these episodes. Even though the show did take some leeway with some things, YFNSM seemed to get the flavor, the tone of Spider-Man right.

One of the original issues I was afraid of was the animation style, but as the episode continued, it did not bother me at all. In fact, i think it worked very well with the character of Spider-Man.

I thought the show was funny and gave us a real good look at this Peter Parker, which is MCU-adjacent. While there are definitely connections to the MCU (Hey there, Left Hand Free), the differences are here too. It sure appears that Norman Osborn is going to be the Tony Stark figure in Peter’s life as the scene in Peter’s apartment with Aunt May was basically reenacted with Norman in Tony Stark’s place.

I love the balls this series is showing. I could tell immediately that there would be plenty of hatred on the internet because of certain “woke” items. I hate that term, by the way. When I first saw Harry in the first episode, I knew there would be some hate-spewers coming for this show. The gender swapping of Curt Connors will surely get some ignorant comments too. Fine. None of that bothered me.

Even the spider bite did not upset me. It certainly was different than any other version of Spider-Man, but that is not a bad thing. The spider was not from Oscorp in the original comics, yet the we’ve seen that happen in other Spider-Man versions.

The choice of Nico as Peter’s friend is intriguing. I have always enjoyed this character in the different comics. The football player is not Flash Thompson, but Lonnie Lincoln, who, by the way, we know from the comics as Tombstone. Amadeus Cho, a Shuri-like Wakandan also show up. The side cast is very eclectic. Great Dr. Strange cameo too.

Spider-Man has had some awesome animated series in the past with the 1990s Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man, but it also had some shows that felt way too childish. I was concerned this would fall into that category like Ultimate Spider-Man. After the first two episodes, I feel as if those fears have been put to rest. It may not be in the same range as those first two I mentioned, but I think this has some real room to grow.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #135

January 18

I got the DC/Image books on Wednesday on NEW COMIC BOOK DAY and then the Marvel/Dark Horse/DSTLRY etc. on Friday, making a full week of books. I am afraid this may be the new status quo moving forward until Diamond figures out what exactly is going on.

We had two of the Favorite Comic Covers of the Week, but only one Comic Cavalcade. When I got back from Wolf Man early this afternoon, there was no internet and it was out until around 5:30ish. That gave me an opening to finish off the books for this week.

Books this week:

Green Lantern Dark #1-2. Written by Tate Brombal and art and cover art by Werther Dell’edera. I picked up #2 a few weeks ago because it looked interesting and I seem to be liking the Elseworlds books in DC more than I like the Marvel alternate future books. I picked up the #1 on eBay and I grabbed a beautiful foil virgin cover. This was a lot of fun, and, with the creative team involved, it had definite feel of Something Killing the Children to it.

Amazing Spider-Man #65.DEATHS. “Death and the Spider.” Written by Derek Landy and art by Kev Walker. Cover art was done by Mark Bagley & Richard Isanove (Silver Medalist). Not sure why ASM does this. Why not just make this issue #66 instead of making it 65.DEATHS? Peter Parker is struggling with what he is having to do as earth’s champion and Phil Coulson’s, the possessor of the Death Infinity stone, presence does not seem to be helping much.

The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos #15. Written by Tate Brombal and art by Isaac Goodhart. Cover art was done by Nick Robles. This arc of Christopher Chaos ends with this issue as we get the truth behind what exactly Christopher Chaos is and we get a path forward. Apparently this book will be continuing with a new storyline moving forward, and this was one of the best issues of Christopher Chaos in awhile.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #29. “Webs of Wakanda Part Three.” Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Daniele Di Nicuolo. Cover art was by Federico Vicentini & Ceci De La Cruz. The Miles is a vampire storyline came to a close with his face off with Black Panther. Miles seems to have picked up yet another problem with Anansi.

Avengers Assemble #5. Written by Steve Orlando and penciled by Jose Luis. Cover art was by Leinil Francis Yu & Romulo Fajardo Jr. The Aveng.e.r.s all assemble to take on the Serpent Society in a big war in the end of this mini series. I did like the combination of these characters with Cap.

What If…? Galactus Transformed Moon Knight #1. Written by Alex Segura and penciled by Scot Eaton & Chris Campana. Ron Lim & Israel Silva did the cover art. This is the third of this stretch of What If books featuring Galactus. This book was okay, featuring Moon Knight and the other previous Galactus heralds.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2. Written by Christos Gage and art by Eric Gapstur. Leonardo Romero did the cover art. The book tied to the upcoming Disney + animated series is a fun book. Spider-Man figures out his web sooters and then faces off with the Enforcers in this issue.

Ultimate Wolverine #1. Written by Chris Condon and art by Alessandro Cappuccio. Cover art was by Lee Bermejo. Ultimate Wolverine is this universe’s Winter Soldier. Powerful story as the Wolverine goes through some faces that we recognize. It is a violent book and a really strong start for one of the most anticipated Ultimate books of the run.

Standstill #6. Written by Lee Loughridge and art by Alex Riegal. Cover art was by Andrew Robinson. Ryker is in pretty bad shape and Colin is even worse as this book has two more issues remaining. I say it every time, but I love the way this book is structured and put together, panel-wise.

Challengers of the Unknown #2. “Mother June” Written by Christopher Cantwell and art by Jorge Fornés, Sean Izaakse, and Amancry Nahuelpan. The cover art was done by Sean Izaakse and Jorge Fornés (Silver Medalist). The mystery involving the Challengers of the Unknown and the Justice League Watchtower marches on with Batman and other Leaguers investigating.

Those Not Afraid #1. Written by Kyle Starks and art by Patrick Piazzalunga. Glenn Fabry did the cover art. Two serial killers meet up and decide to see which one of them can set the all time murder record. A wild mini series from Dark Horse.

Juvenile #2. Written, art and cover art by Jesus Orellana (Bronze Medalist). Juvenile is one of my favorite new books from Image. I love the relationship being shown of Max and Sara. I love the set up with the kids being drugged to keep their telepathy and telekinesis in check.

The Question: All Along the Watchtower #3. “Do the Collapse” Written by Alex Segura and art by Cian Tormey. Cover art was by Cian Tormey & Romulo Fajardo Jr. I have been enjoying this series and I love how it is weaved in with Challengers of the Unknown and Justice League. Question and Batwoman are trying to figure out things while doing what they can to trust each other.

Feral #9. Written by Tony Fleecs and art by Trish Forstner & Tone Rodriguez. Cover B art by Trish Forstner & Tony Fleecs. Tragedy strikes as our cats try to figure out what is going on with the Lady. Feral has been consistently excellent and filled with stress each issue.

Knights vs. Samurai #4. Written by David Dastmalchian and art by Fede Mele. Cover art was done by Gianenrico Bonacorsi and Bjorn Barends (Gold Medalist). Knights, Samurais and dragons…oh my!

Exceptional X-Men #5. Written by Eve L. Ewing and art by Carmen Carnero. Carmen Carnero & Nolan Woodward did the cover art. Finding out about Kitty’s murderous past sent a ripple through the new students, causing some to bolt.

Laura Kinney Wolverine #2. “The Devil in Me- Part 1” Written by Erica Schultz and art by Giada Belviso. Elena Casagrande & Edgar Delgado did the cover art. Laura heads into Hell’s Kitchen and she winds up on the other side of Daredevil (aka Elektra). They then team up to try and stop a group using an exploding mutant to blow up a protest.

Nights #12.Nice While it Lasted.” Written by Wyatt Kennedy and art by Luigi Formisano. This issue definitely feels like a conclusion in many ways. I had not paid too close of attention to this book for the last several issues and it has been a long time since #11 came out. This felt like a satisfying issue though while leaving it open for future books. This is probably my last one though.

Living Hell#2. Written, drawn and cover art by Caitlin Yarsky. Jerome is out in search of demons and ghosts to return to hell. There are some intriguing creatures in this issue, including the two spirits of old women who were on the cover. Lot of creativity in this Dark Horse book.

Incredible Hulk #21. “Wolves of the Old World Part Two” Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and art by Danny Earles. Nic Klein did the cover art. Hulk, Werewolf by Night and Charlie, in the Godskin of Lycana face off with the monstrous wolf Varcolac. Incredible Hulk has been a little up and down recently. I do like the use of Jack Russell in this book.

Doll Parts: A Lovesick Tale #1. Written, illustrated and cover art by Luana Vecchio. When I picked up the Lovesick series a year or so ago, I was not a huge fan of the book. It was interesting, but kind of dirty. I debated whether to pick this issue up. I was glad I did because this was a really good story that was still rough at times. The story followed 12-year old Maddie through some tough situations. I was compelled with the story the whole way.

Minor Arcana #5. “The Ballad of Budd St. Pierre, 1976.” Written, art and cover art by Jeff Lemire. We get some back story on Budd St. Pierre, Teresa’s late grandfather. This felt like a bit of a filler issue, but it is important to learn more about this character.

Storm #4. “A Flame in the Wind.” Written by Murewa Ayodele and art by Lucas Werneck. Mateus Manhanini did the cover art. Storm is having dinner with Dr. Doom. She had to not use her mutant powers for seven days because of the deal that Brother Voodoo had made to save Ororo’s life. She may not make that time limit.

Immortal Thor #19. “Tales of Asgard.” Written by Al Ewing and a whole bunch of artists. Cover art was by Alex Ross. We do not have Thor in this Thor comic. We come across a lot of the other characters around Asgard, including Sif, the other dimensional son of Thor, Magni, Loki, the Warriors Three, Executioner and Enchantress.

Rogue the Savage Land #1. “Heroes Never Come Home Part 1: So Alive” Written by Tim Seeley and art by Zulema Scotto Lavina. Kaare Andrews did the cover art. A flashback series when Rogue wound up in the Savage Land with Magneto. I like Rogue, I like Ka-Zar and I like the Savage Land so I think this one will be fun.

You Won’t Feel a Thing #1. Written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Jock. John Reader was a retired detective, dying of a brain tumor, but one of the cases that shook his life as a young man, The Chatter Man, is back. Can his once sharp mind help bring this vicious serial killer to justice. A great and challenging story from DSTLRY.

Through the Boughs #1. A group of Christmas stories from a plethora of great comic creators. Creators including Patrick McHale & Jim Campbell, Sweeney Boo, James Tynion IV & Jensine Eckwall, Molly Mendoza, Ryan Andrews, K. Wroten, and Grim Wilkins.

Other books this week: Finders Keepers #1, Skin Police #4, Anansi Boys #7, Spirits of Vengeance #5, The New Gods #2, The Nice House by the Sea #5 and the Moon is Following Us #5.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #131

December 28, 2024

Well, here is the last EYG Comic Cavalcade for 2024. It was a year where my collection really took off. It got organized, rebagged and reboarded, and listed on CLZ. The Comic Cavalcade was right there for the entire thing, recording the books that I added to my collection.

Before I forget, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope that 2025 is the best year yet. As for the Comic Cavalcade, I plan to continue to do this on a weekly basis as new comics continue to be released and as long as eBay keeps up the source for back issues.

Books this week:

X-Men #9. “Raid on Graymalkin” Part 3. Written by Jed Mackay and penciled by Federico Vicentini & Ryan Stegman. Cover art by Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, and Marte Gracia (Bronze Medalist). The crossover between X-Men and Uncanny X-Men continues as the two teams fight with one another at Graymalkin, the prison for mutants that was once the X-Mansion. The shadow off Charles Xavier is all over the place….

Exceptional X-Men #4. Written by Eve L. Ewing and art by Carmen Carnero. Cover art was by Carnero & Nolan Woodward. Iceman is here as the book keeps looking at Kitty Pryde and her past issues with her teammates and her own actions while trying to do something good.

Hellhunters #1. Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and art by Adam Gorham. Jonas Scharf & Alex Guimarães. World War II Ghost Rider teams up with Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos for some World War II action.

Iron Man #3. “Organized Crime.” Written by Spencer Ackerman and art by Julius Ohta with Jethro Morales. Tony Stark uses his clever mind to finish off the Stark takeover attempt by AIM and Roxxon. I am glad that this arc does not seem to be moving forward as we just had a corporate takeover storyline recently. Guest starring the demon Belasco.

West Coast Avengers #2. Written by Gerry Duggan and art by Danny Kim. Ben Harvey did the art for the cover. Apparently, the Ultron we saw at the end of the first issue was not the same Ultron who is a member of the West Coast Avengers. That was a bit of a surprise.

Amazing Spider-Man #64. “King of Pain” Written by Justina Ireland and art by Gleb Melnikov. Ed McGuinness & Marco Menyz did the cover art. The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man marches on as Peter has to face off with one of the Twins. Peter is also attempting to find a way to win against some of these Scions without actually dying. I like this so far as the villains seem to be underestimating Spidey and are learning their lessons. You don’t see that much any more and it feels a touch old school.

Redcoat #8. Geoff Johns and Bryan Hitch are the creators and cover B art was done by Brad Walker (Gold Medalist). A stand alone issue of the Redcoat that sees Simon take on a family of serial killers in 1873. The Northerner returned at the very end to set up the new story arc for 2025.

Metamorpho #1. “Mister 3, the Triple-State Man” Written by Al Ewing and art by Steve Lieber. Steve Lieber & Lee Loughridge did the cover art. This was a lot of fun. It had a very old school type flavor to the issue, perhaps because of the art stylings of Steve Lieber. It definitely feels as if they are trying to build nostalgia for the character prior to his appearance in the 2025 Superman movie. I have always liked Metamorpho-Meta-morph-o (there is an allusion for ya) and this is an enjoyable book. It does worry me that I am buying more and more DC books. I am concerned that I already buy more books a month than in any time in my life, and I shouldn’t be adding more DC to the list.

Black Canary: Best of the Best #2. “Round Two” Written by Tom King and art and cover art by Ryan Sook. My point about the DC books. There are a bunch now. And Black Canary is awesome. I love this story as they intersperse the flashback of Dinah as a younger girl with the fights she is having with lady Shiva. I do love Tom King as a writer and Metamorpho was written by another favorite of mine, Al Ewing. Maybe it is the writing talent that has attracted me to DC. This one is great so far.

Justice League Unlimited #2. Written by Mark Waid and art and cover art by Dan Mora. Another DC book and another great writer in Mark Waid. When I was young, I was a fan of the JLA, but I moved away from it, being more of a Marvel stan. I do like the idea of the Justice League being all the heroes around and I did like seeing Indiana Jones on page 5. He turned out to be Dr. Richard Occult, but that first shot of him was Indy all the way. I did like the mystery of what was happening to J’onn J’ones as well. Oh DC… what are you doing to me?

Absolute Wonder Woman #3. “The Last Amazon Part 3” Written by Kelly Thompson and art by Hayden Sherman. Cover art by Hayden Sherman & Jordie Bellaire (Silver Medalist). Yet another DC book, but this one is the Absolute line. Diana is very intriguing in this new take on her and I have been enjoying these new variations on the Trinity so far. Kelly Thompson is yet another awesome writer working with DC. Can’t argue with quality.

Uncanny Valley #7. Written by Tony Fleecs and art and cover art by Dave Wachter. Finally out of DC and into Boom! Studios. Oliver finds himself in a new and strange world. The world of his grandfather, Pecos Peet. Meanwhile his mom and Peet are in search for him. Uncanny Valley has been a consistently engaging book with one of the most creative ideas in a long time.

Blade Red Band #3. Written by Bryan Hill and art by Federica Mancin & C.F. Villa. C.F. Villa and Federico Blee did the cover art. As Blade is in search of Pontius, he has to question the loyalty of his current partner and vampire hunter Elena. This has been a very fascinating book full of betrayals and uncertainty. I’m not sure it needs the red band logo, but it has been a good story so far.

Sam and Twitch Case Files #9. Script by Todd McFarlane & Jordan Barel with art by Thomas Nachlik. Thaddeus Robeck did the cover art. A new story arc kicks off with Sam and Twitch as Twitch is in pursuit of a suspect and he shoots him. He was aiming for his shoulder, but the bullet went through his head/eye, killing him. I loved this issue because, despite how normal this felt, there is more under the surface. Good start for the next story arc.

Timeslide #1. Written by Steve Foxe and art by Ivan Fiorelli. Kael Ngu did the cover art. Cable and Bishop team up to go through time to try and prevent time from fraying. It seemed as if this book was used to show hints at what is coming in the future of Marvel Comics. It went as far as to provide a checklist about halfway through including titles of upcoming events. How many actually happen will be intriguing. Meanwhile, this book was okay, but nothing to write home about.

Kidpool/Spider-Boy#1. Written by Christopher Yost and penciled by Nathan Stockman, Jed Dougherty & Chris Campana. Humberto Ramos & Edgar Delgado did the cover art. Spider-Boy faces his most dangerous and annoying threat yet… a young, female Deadpool variant who likes him. But does she like him like him? Might they hold hands? Or will their relationship be broken up by Stegron?

Mystique #3. “Sentinels” Written, drawn and cover art by Declan Shalvey. This is a different POV from Sentinels#3 where we think we see them fighting Magneto. Thanks to this issue, we know it is not Magneto that the Sentinels are fighting. It is Mystique. But how does she have the magnetism of Magneto? More questions here, and a lot of mutant fun.

Ultimate Black Panther #11. Written by Bryan Hill and guest artist Carlos Nieto. Cover art was by Stefano Caselli & David Curiel. This was actually my favorite issue of Ultimate Black Panther since the very beginning of the series. I liked how they prepared to set up the one on one battle between T’Challa and the Ultimate Moon Knight, and how all of T’Challa’s allies and friends wanted to keep him from it. Builds some solid stakes and tension for the throwdown next issue (I assume).

Geiger #9. Written by Geoff Johns and art by Paul Pelletier and Gary Frank. Cover art was by Gary Frank & Brad Anderson. Mr. Geiger turned on Nate as he lost control of himself. If not for Barney, things would have been very problematic. Geiger wants to change. The most intriguing part of this issue was the prologue where we see Simon Pure from Redcoat, Junkyard Joe, and what looked like the Northerner. Is it the Ghost Machine crossover we have been waiting for?

Spider-Boy #14. “Know Your Enemy” Written by Dan Slott and art by Paco Medina & Humberto Ramos. Cover art by Paco Medina & Edgar Delgado. The Dragon’s Challenge tournament begins with Daredevil and Spider-Boy teaming up to try and prevent Bullseye & Spider-Girl from winning. We get a Spider-Girl origin and Hulkette is hanging around until Spider-Boy loses so she can get her own revenge.

Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #3. “Pathfinder” Written by Jed MacKay and art by Domenico Carbone. Davide Paratore did the cover art. The Midnight Mission is killed in this issue. What? The house died? This sends Moon Knight into an anger, but it feels very odd having killed off the Midnight Mission. Not sure why this was done as it felt like a great setting. I guess we’ll have to see.

Sabretooth: The Dead Don’t Talk #1. Written by Frank Tieri and art by Michael Sta. Maria. Adam Kubert and Laura Martin did the cover art. A flashback story about Sabretooth and the Ravencroft asylum. Bloody and violent, this is an interesting mini series.

Other books this week: Ultraman x Avengers #3, Lawful #6, Hello Darkness #6, Void Rivals #15, and The Creeping Below #2.

Kraven the Hunter

Kraven the Hunter is the final film in the Sony Extended Spider-Man Universe, which has included the Venom movies, Morbius, and Madame Web. And I think I can speak for everybody when I say, THANK GOD!

I had a lot of hopes that Kraven could be an exception for the Spider-Man-less films. Unfortunately, this was the rule instead.

Kraven the Hunter was terrible.

I am not sure what this movie was supposed to be. The story was all over the place and the film jumped about willy-nilly.

Where to start? I mean… everything that we saw in this film made no sense and the film did not seem to care much about making it make sense.

There was a tremendous cast here that somehow brought some of the worst acting you have ever seen. Aaron Taylor Johnson was okay as Kraven, but Russell Crowe and Ariana DeBose, both who had won Oscars, gave some of the worst performances I have ever seen. How does this happen?

Part of it was that the writing was some of the worst of the year. The dialogue was horrendous, laughable and did no favors for any of these actors. It was on the level of Madame Web which was one of the worst of the year.

Another part of the dialogue that was terrible was all of the ADR. This is a thing when the movie will have voice overs, re-recording scenes for whatever reason. The fact is that the ADR is done really poorly. I swear the character The Foreigner never moves his mouth. It was very noticeable and distracting. All movies do ADRs, but why does the Sony Spider-Man movie do this so badly (because Madame Web was terrible too).

There were some action that was okay, particularly a chase scene with a car and Kraven on foot. However, most of the action of this movie were average, at best. With the action being okay, the film needed it to be much better to overcome the other negatives of it.

Sadly, it feels like Kraven the Hunter has joined the race for the worst movie of the year. There are legit 6 films that could be in that number one slot at the end of the month for my Worst Movie List. There was just no life or any sort of joy here. Every time Kraven cracks a quip, it was totally flat and felt out of place. Some of the CGI was as poor as you would expect. There just is not much to enjoy about Kraven the Hunter. He has always been one of my favorite Spider-Man villains, but this does not work on any level.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #128

December 8, 2024

Welcome back to the EYG Comic Cavalcade.

We are doing another Comic Cavalcade because in issue #127, I only had a handful of issues to do. I have covered the delivery issue with Comic World enough, but I received a call on Friday saying everything was in. I was very excited and went to buy it that night.

The books were Marvel and Independent and I had a light weekend of movies, so this gave me an opportunity to finish these up and do another post.

Thanks to Todd and Pat from Comic World for their work getting these available for selling. I am sure there would be stores that would just say they can wait until next week.

There was also the eBay update. I got Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham #6 delivered to me the other day. I have just a handful of Peter Porker books remaining to pick up.

Books from this new order…and beyond:

Grommets #1-2. Written by Rick Remender and Brian Posehn. The art is done by Brett Parson. This was another eBay pick up. I had seen someone on Bluesky (love this new platform, btw) raving about this comic (sorry, I do not remember whom it was). I was curious about it so I picked up the issues on eBay. This is a very intriguing book, and very different than what I was expecting. Definitely skateboarding is vital to the story. I did like these characters, though I am not sure what I was expecting. I have more issues coming from eBay soon, so I do look forward to continuing with it.

Deadpool/Wolverine: Weapon X-Traction #1. Written by Ryan North and art by Javier Garrón. Javier Garrón & Edgar Delgado did the cover art. This one-shot was actually really enjoyable. Looking back, I see Ryan North as the writer, who I love from the recent FF run. I can see he can write Wolverine and Deadpool too. This was a hoot of an issue.

Wolverine #4. “Lost and Found“. Written by Saladin Ahmed and art by Martin Coccolo. Martin Coccolo & Bryan Valenza did the cover art. Wolverine is working with the new Wendigo to try and help the young kid manage his curse. However, Constrictor gets in the way. And something weird is going on with the adamantium. I am a big fan of this new Wendigo and I hope it continues on.

Blade: Red Band #2. Written by Bryan Hill and art by C.F. Villa. Cover art was done by C.F. Villa and Federico Blee. Blade is trying to deal with his life post Blood Hunt and he is on a mission where he encounters Elena. Some good Blade action in this book (though I once again do not think this necessarily rises to the level of Red Band).

Werewolf by Night: Red Band #5. Written by Jason Loo and penciled by Sergio Davila. E.M. Gist did the cover art. Jack Russell has been cast out of the Savage land and he has come across the one and only Bruce Banner in a huge coincidence. Red Hood and his band probably does not want to make him angry because they won’t like it when he’s angry. I got a kick out of it though.

The Exorcism at 1600 Penn #2. Written by Hannah Rose May and art and cover art by Vanesa Del Ray (Bronze Medalist). The president of the United States’ daughter has a problem. She is sick (or is she?) and her brother believes it is his fault. What can he do about it and will his religious leaders believe him? I have enjoyed this series so far very much. I like the POV of the President involved in this story. It is different than what we are used to. Different is always epic.

All-New Venom #1. Written by Al Ewing and art by Carlos Gomez. Cover art (Gold foil) by Iban Coello (Silver Medalist). Cover A art by Adam Kubert. I really loved this new take on Venom. I have not read Venom in years, but this was intriguing. Who is the new Venom? Is it Madame Masque, Luke Cage, Rick Jones or Robbie Robertson? Weird group of suspects. I’m not sure if I have an inkling yet, but I do hope they do not just reveal it too soon. If I had to guess, at this point, I would guess Luke Cage. My fourth place is Madame Masque (which probably means it is her). Third is Robbie and second is Rick Jones, but that order can change at any point. I just think it is a fascinating idea to give the symbiote to the NY Mayor. We’ll see where it goes.

Red Before Black #3. Written by Stephanie Phillips and illustrated and cover art by Goran Sudžuka. Val and Leo are out on an adventure… well, that is after Val recovered. Leo thought she was dead. This series has a Thelma and Louise vibe to it… and Winston, a baby alligator. I hate alligators.

NYX #6. Written by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly and penciled by Michael Shelfer. Cover art was done by Sara Pichelli & Federico Blee. Kamala and her friends are out on the town on their way to a Dazzler concert. She wanted a happy outing with her friends. Mojo had some different thoughts on that matter… and, let’s face it, a Dazzler concert is an invite for trouble (have you seen the Dazzler mini series? What did Kamala expect?)

Spider-Gwen: The Ghost Spider #8. “Haunted” Part 8. Written by Stephanie Phillips and art by Paolo Villanelli. Mark Brooks did the cover art. Ghost Spider is on the trail of the Black Tarantula, fighting the clock against a verdict in the case against a corrupt judge. Along the way, Gwen battles Mister Fear. Luke Cage guest starred in this issue too.

The Ultimates #7. Written by Deniz Camp and art by Juan Frigeri. Dike Ruan & Neeraj Menon did the cover art. Hank Pym and Jim Hammond are out to see Tony Stark’s memorial. Lots of other things are going down with the world in seemingly crisis mode. However, the last page revealed the not-so-shocking reveal about the truth surrounding Stark. This feels like a building issue that may be leading to something bigger.

Hello Darkness #5. Another issue of the Boom! Studios hit horror anthology including another short with Erica Slaughter (kind of). Hello Darkness has been a nice book featuring some interesting comic horror, but I will say that I have enjoyed the James Tynion IV stories the most.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #27. “Webs of Wakanda Part One.” Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Daniele Di Nicuolo. Federico Vicentini & Erick Arciniega did the cover art. Miles is on his way to Wakanda with T’Challa in the hopes of finding some kind of answer with his vampirism.

Holiday Tales to Astonish #1. Cover art by Luciano Vecchio. Three Christmas stories featuring the Fantastic Four, the Uncanny X-Men and the Spectacular Spider-Men and creator including Gerry Duggan, Phil Noto, Daniel Kibblesmith, Pat Olliffe, Gene Yang, and Dylan Burnett. All three stories were fun, but my personal favorite was the present stealing Dr. Doom in the FF.

X-Men #8. “Raid on Graymalkin Part 1“. Written by Jed MacKay and penciled by Ryan Stegman. Cover art was done by Stegman, JP Mayer and Marte Gracia. The beginning of a big crossover between the X-Men and the Uncanny X-Men series, as the teams head to Graymalkin (the former estate of Charles Xavier) to try and retrieve their team members. I liked some of the character work with the Beast in this issue. Things look grave moving forward.

Avengers #21. “Avengers vs. X-Men.” Written by Jed MacKay and art by Valero Schiti. Cover art was done by Valero Schiti and Federico Blee. Yes, it is the X-Men vs. the Avengers… in a softball game! It turns out like kissing your sister… a tie! Who knew that Glob was such a great cook? Glob turns out to be the X-Men’s Jarvis. Oh, and Quentin Quire is a dick. We knew that already. The cover is a bit of a mislead… okay, more than a bit.

Avengers Assemble #4. Written by Steve Orlando and art by Valentina Pinti. Cover art was by Leinil Francis Yu & Romulo Fajardo Jr. The Aveng.e.r.s head to Latveria to try and prevent Victorious from doing too much damage trying to get into the dome around the country. Meanwhile, Steve Rogers gets turned into another animal. How many times does that poor guy have to get transformed?

The Art of Something is Killing the Children Companion. Cover art by Werther Dell’Edera (Gold Medalist). This is an art book compiling some of the awesome art of the epic Boom! Studios series. There are some of the greatest artists in comics today providing their work on Erica Slaughter and the excellent series. From Peach Momoko to Guillem March, some of the most beautiful work is on display in this book. It is stunning and any fan of the series and of just astounding comic art should pick this companion up.

Other books this time: Arkham Horror #3, Seance in the Asylum #2, Venom War #5, X-Force #6, Anansi Boys #6, and The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos #14.

The Christopher Reeve Memorial Comic Book Movie of the Year- 2024 Year in Review

2024 was a down year with comic book movies. Marvel only put out one movie. Sony had one of the worst films of the year. Nothing from DC. It has been slow. 2025 will have a whole bunch of choices, but 2024, there is one clear standout.

I feel confident that I can make this pick before seeing Kraven the Hunter in a few weeks. Even if it surprises us and becomes one of the few Sony Spider-films that was any good, it will in no universe match the winner of this award this year. I feel sure in that statement. I mean, I did see Madame Web.

The previous winners:

2024 Christopher Reeve Memorial Comic Book Movie of the Year:

Deadpool and Wolverine

(Marvel Studios)

This film accomplished so much… such as:

  • Brought Deadpool into the MCU
  • Brought Hugh Jackman back to the role of Logan
  • Gave a tremendous love letter to the FOX Marvel Universe
  • Made $1.3 BILLION dollars at the Box Office becoming the highest grossing R rated movie of all time.
  • Final got everyone to shut up about Disney meddling in the rating. This was a full blown R rated movie.
  • Created a huge number of unbelievable cameos
  • Got Madonna to help decide where her song would work best.

And so much more. Deadpool & Wolverine is the best super hero movie of the year by far and is well deserving of this award.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #123

November 9, 2024

Happy weekend all. It is time once again for the EYG Comic Cavalcade #123. I got a bunch of books this week, both at Comic World and off eBay.

Just today, the five issue limited series Spaceknights from Marvel was delivered. This was the series following Rom, Spaceknight when Marvel lost the Rom copyright. I could have swore that I had this series, but when I finished my inventory last summer, I had only issue #4 in CLZ. I still feel as if I had them, but I do not know where they may have gone. Either way, I have the whole series now.

I have also picked up some added Amazing Spider-Man issues from vol. 2 including #5, 30 and 48. I am working on completing that vol 2 run of ASM, whether it be on eBay or from Todd.

Other books this week:

Mark Spears: Monsters #1. “The Return” Written and drawn by Mark Spears. Spears also did this variant cover B that I have. This is a hot new horror book that I picked up off eBay also this week. I love the realistic art mixed with the horror genre. Really solid work here, plus, I swear, the last scene was an homage directly out of Monster Squad.

Trick or Read 2024. Included Fantastic Four #1, Venom: Bedlam #1, Spider-Boy: The Webless Wonder #1, Kylo Ren #1, and Spidey and his Amazing Friends #1. Fun, free comics for that Halloween time of the year. Some were direct reprints and others have some original content.

One for Sorrow #1. Story, art, cover by Jamie McKelvie. A new series from DSTLRY and these seem to always be awesome. This has a very Thunderbolts!-esce twist at the end that really put a spin on everything that we had read before. I am intrigued to see how this will play out as the series moves forward.

X-Force #5. “One Second Later” Written by Geoffrey Thorne and art by Marcus To. Stephen Segovia & Rain Beredo did the cover art. The cover is fairly misleading as it stated that X-Force dies. Perhaps one did. But the team fights and eventually teams up with an Avengers crew from a different world. X-Force has been okay, but it could be needing to pick up the story if it wants me to keep buying it.

Public Domain #10. “Tijuana” Written, drawn and cover by Chip Zdarsky, with additional art by Rachael Scott. This issue focuses on Syd and Candy’s marriage and what happened back in the 1980s. Secrets come out.

Absolute Superman #1. “Down in the Dirt” Written by Jason Aaron and art by Rafa Sandoval. Rafa Sandoval & Ulises Arreola did the cover art (Bronze Medalist). The third of the new Absolute comics from DC featuring Krypton’s favorite son was really pretty good. I liked the way that Superman appeared in the book for the first time and I did not mind the young boy on Krypton instead of the baby. However, I have to say that I am a little iffy about the new version of Lois Lane. We’ll see where it goes. Oh, and Jason Aaron is just really busy!

Saga #70. Written by Brian K. Vaughn and art and cover art by Fiona Staples. Squire is off on his own for some training and it is turning the family upside down. Saga has been just consistently so good over the run that I look forward to it every month. Glad it is back on a regular release schedule.

Venom War: Spider-Man #4. Written by Collin Kelly & Jackson Lanzing with pencils by Greg Land. Cover art was by Greg Land & Frank D’Armata. The final issue of this crossover series sees Spidey and Jackpot fighting together again, making me really wish Peter and MJ would just get back together like they should be. It would even make me okay with MJ having super powers.

Plastic Man No More #3. Written by Christopher Cantwell and art by Alex Lins. Alex Lins & Marcelo Maiolo did the cover art (Silver Medalist). Boy, Plastic Man is really taking some steps that have to be considered “bad choices.” Even with his desire to save his son from sharing the same fate that Plastic Man is suffering from, some of what he does feels to be inappropriate. Can’t wait to see where this goes.

Avengers #20. “Panther Gang” Written by Jed MacKay and art by Farid Karami. Valerio Schiti and Federico Blee did the art for the cover. A Black panther centric issue as he goes into an alternate dimension to try and free a group of prisoners inside the Meridian Diadem. Not my favorite Avengers book recently.

The Human Fly #1. Written by Christopher Sequeira and art and cover art by Jan Scherpenhuizen assisted by Peter Lawson. The former stunt man based on a toy back in the 1980s (comic then done by Marvel) is now back in a company called IPI Comics. Human Fly was always a guilty pleasure of mine so I was excited about this new mini series.

X-Men #7. “The Iron Night” Written by Jed MacKay and penciled by Netho Diaz. Cover art by Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, & Marte Gracia. A flashback issue with several scenes showing us how Cyclops and Magneto found themselves in the situation that they are currently in. The main X-books continue to be excellent since the end of the Kraokan storyline.

Kahhori: Reshaper of Worlds #1. Three sections of the story, with three separate writers and artists. Cover art was by Afua Richardson (Gold Medalist). This is a Marvel Voices imprint as we are introduced for the first time to Kahhori, the Native American character that appeared in season two of the animated TV show, What If…?

Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood #4. Another anthology issue featuring several shorts. Cover art was by Mahmud Asrar & Romulo Fajardo. This is the final issue of this anthology series. I have enjoyed most of these shorts even though I prefer a full story in an issue.

Knights vs. Samurai #1-2. Story by David Dastmalchian and art by Fede Mele. Cover art for issue #1: Raymond Gay & Todd McFarlane. Cover art for issue #2: Gianenrico Bonacorsi and Fede Mele. How can you go wrong with Knights and Samurais? You can’t and this series is full of action and some awesome energy.

X-Factor #4. “The Nematode“. Written by Mark Russell and art by Bob Quinn. Greg Land, Jay Leister and Frank D’Armata did the cover art. X-Factor goes on a rescue mission into the center of the earth after a couple of scientists. They find some surprising creatures. The biggest problem… they left Granny Smite behind. NOOOOOOO!!!!

Spider-Society #4. Written by Alex Segura and art by Scott Godlewski. Cover art by Pete Woods. This mini series comes to a close with the heroic spider-people from around the Web putting a stop to evil Aunt May and her forces.

The Ultimates #6. Written by Deniz Camp and art by Juan Frigeri. Dike Ruan & Neeraj Menon did the cover art. The Hulk is here and he is fighting the Ultimates. The end of the book seems to indicate that the Ultimates have paid a huge price (but I’ll believe it when I see it).

Blood Hunters #4. Written by Erica Schultz and penciled by Robert Gill and Chris Campana. Ema Lupacchino & GURU-eFX did the cover art. The Bloodcoven continue their attack on the Blood Hunters as Miles takes off to prevent his own bloodlust from causing a problem. However, things are looking bad for Dagger.

Aliens vs. Avengers #2. Written by Jonathan Hickman and art and cover art by Esad Ribić. The Avengers are in some real trouble and an elder Tony Stark is faced with a decision that could change the tide of the battle… while deserting some friends.

Something is Killing the Children #0. “Before Archer’s Peak.” Written by James Tynion IV and art by Werther Dell’Edera. Cover art by Jenny Frison. The prelude to the entire series shows us what Erica Slaughter was doing just before heading into Archer’s Peak. Erica Slaughter is a fantastic character and can really carry any story on her own.

Other books this week: Negasonic Teenage Warhead #1, Gilt Frame #3, Skin Police #2, Self Help #5, Headless Horseman 2024#1, Anansi Boys #5, and Creature Commandos #2.
