Clayton Kershaw

I am sitting here watching the LA Dodgers playing the Seattle Mariners in the final regular season game of the 2025 season. Both teams have clinched births in the playoffs so there was little to play for. However, there was a major reason this game was a must see.

This would be the final time Clayton Kershaw would step on a mound for a regular season game.

Clayton Kershaw announced his retirement a few weeks ago, after spending 18 years pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Against the Mariners today, Clayton has gone 5 1/3 innings pitched, 0 earned runs, 7 strikeouts, 4 hits and 1 walk. He left the game with a 4-0 lead, with a chance to get one more win, which would be his 223rd in his career.

At the end of the 5th inning, it felt as if Kershaw was going to be done, but he went back out for the sixth inning. First batter he faced was Seattle’s Eugenio Suarez, who had 49 home runs this season. Kershaw struck him out and out came Freddie Freeman.

Freeman had already been taken out of the game after he had homered and he was coming out as a friend to take Clayton Kershaw out of the game. It was a beautiful moment. Freddie tried to take the ball, but Clayton wouldn’t give it to him. He was keeping that ball. The Seattle crowd gave him a remarkable ovation and the camera followed him into the dugout.

Dodger manager Dave Roberts met Clayton before heading into the dugout for a big hug.

Coming into the game, Clayton Kershaw has a record of 222-96, which is an amazing W-L percentage. His career ERA was 2.54, and his career WHIP is 1.02. He recently joined the 3000 career strikeout club, perhaps the final pitcher to ever do it. He is a three-time Cy Young Award winner and an 11-time All-Star. He has been on two World Series winning teams. He is a surefire Hall of Famer.

I have to say that I had a lot of emotions watching Clayton Kershaw walk off that mound for the final time in the regular season. I had some tears in my eyes. He has been one of the biggest stars on my favorite team for years, and his loyalty and dedication to the Dodgers, in an era where players rarely stick with one team for their entire career, is amazing.

I felt as if the moment was so large for me that I needed to write about it. I hope Clayton pitches again in the post season, though he will not be on the Wild Card series roster. If the Dodgers advance, I expect Clayton Kershaw out on that mound again.

(By the way, it is currently 5-0 in the top of the 8th. Shohei Ohtani hit his 55th homer).

Sunday Morning Sidewalk #25

Spoilers

“I Got It”

“Home”

Win or Lose’s final two episodes were the Sunday Morning Sidewalk this week and these episodes wrapped up the season long storyline.

Episode seven featured Kai and her overbearing dad who pushes her hard. Kai and her dad James moved into the neighborhood a year before and the softball team helped Kai become part of the community. She was really great at baseball, but the atmosphere of the Pickles made Kai want to play softball. James jumped in with both feet.

We see the drive of her father show itself in Kai as she was pushing herself to get better and wound up hurting her ankle, though she never told anyone she was hurt.

The episode ended with the championship game, getting a little further than we did last week. We see Kai at the plate after Laurie got hit by the pitch and Kai hit a big shot into the outfield, only to see that injured ankle become a problem again.

The final episode had to bring everything together that has been happening all year long and it does so really well. We focus in on Coach Dan for this episode and his own problems. Living out of his car, he spent his time at the field, grooming it for game time. There was a lot here that I could relate to as a former coach myself. As Coach Dan was watering the field, I remembered days doing the exact same thing.

Kai’s big hit split the outfield and Kai ran the bases, behind Laurie, who clearly had not done that before. Laurie scores to tie the game but Kai ends up in a run down and gets called out at home by Frank.

This set off a massive chaotic event as the crowd went wild, Coach Dan loses his temper and gets accidentally knocked into Frank the umpire. Frank throws Dan out of the game, which only caused Dan to lose it more. Dan was feeling the pressure of the parents who want to replace Dan with James next season.

Then we get:

  • Laurie trying to help calm her father down (with a remarkable imagery/metaphor)
  • Ira stops the Bleacher Creatures from stealing the cash box from the concessions. He does that by grabbing it and running away.
  • It was actually Ira’s calling for help that caused Taylor to leave the game, not the trouble with Yuwen
  • Rochelle and Vanessa finally got to the game in the middle of the chaos and jumped in to help.
  • Vanessa and Frank bond after Frank saved Vanessa’s baby from choking.
  • Taylor prevents the Bleacher Creatures from getting Ira and they return the cash box.
  • James found Kai, who was hiding after the play at home and they talk through their troubles.

After the baby was saved, this got back to reality and the chaos left the park. Dan had calmed down and apologized to Frank. Taylor, Kai and Yuwen all made up. The game moved on into extra innings.

After this we see a Pickles pizza party celebrating the end of the season. We do not know what the result of the championship game was and no one mentioned it again.

The show ended with Laurie telling her dad that she did not want to play softball any more.

This was such a wonderful show with so much heart. It gave us a ton of human emotion, wrapped within the concept of a softball game. The imagery of the show really spoke to me and the way certain emotions were displayed was remarkably creative.

This is truly some Pixar magic in a series where I did not expect that magic to be.

This ends Win or Lose for the Sunday Morning Sidewalk. Next week, we start the two episode documentary series called Kisstory, about the band Kiss. It is two episodes, both about an hour and a half long. It can be found on Hulu or Disney +.

Coach screamed “go go  subs” . It was at the NFL Chiefs camp I was drafted and the 5 pick in the draft. I ran in and I was a QB, “Down set hiiik” I snapped the ball one of the D line break thru i scrambled to the right side of the field them i let it go it went flying

 Zip

I flew past everybody straight to Jim Hardy (one of our WRs). But at the last second, an interception that was my first day at the training camp, my first snap. I screamed in rage.

That night when I was about to leave the camp when the coach called me over I knew I was done for. He said “follow me we need to talk…”

When I arrived at the office he “said take  a seat”.

“Ok I know you are trying your best but we might have to cut you if you don’t lock in.”

I sat there for a minute or two before I broke the silence.

“ I really am trying to do my best but I…”

” DON’T CARE” said the coach “ YOU WILL GET CUT, FIGURE IT OUT.” he told me. I went into my car and drove out.

When I was driving home I was muttering to myself the whole time about how stuipd that

dream of mine was. To be in the NFL. I saw a gas station and decided to stop and get a snack and some gas. When I went in, I heard a lot of screams. I walked in and I said “What’s wrong?” That’s when I saw him, a short guy, 5 foot 6, mask, with a glock. I started panicking.

He said, “Go to the ground with your hands behind your back.”

 I went to the ground.

He said, “Give me your money.”

I said “no,”

He pointed the gun at me as I rolled out of the way. He fired again and missed his shot. I jumped up on him and he fell to the ground. I grabbed his gun and threw it to the side. Just as the cops came in and arrested the guy, they said thank you but next time not do that again.

I got into my car and drove home. I wasn’t really thinking about the chance of being cut off the Chiefs roster. I was just thinking about how I almost died. I was so busy thinking about that that I zoned out and wasn’t paying attention to the road. “BOOM” everything went black.

I woke up in the hospital and I screamed, “What is going on?”

The nurse came over and said, “You were hit by a deer while on the road.”

“Ok, I need to go to football practice. How long has it been?”

“About that… you might want to talk to your coach.”

I thought to myself, “Oh no, I got cut, didn’t I? Then the coach walked in with a worried look.

He said, “Tim we got a problem”

“What” I said.

 “Well it’s been 5 months.”

“ FIVE MONTHS!” I screamed. I looked outside and I saw it was fall outside.

“And even worse” said the coach.

 “What could be possibly worse?”

 “Jones has been injured”

 “ Oh crap”

“Yep,” said the coach, “we need you to play and you’ve been in a coma for 5 months.”

The next day I went to practice and everybody was depressed. I knew what they were thinking, “We are cooked.”

When the coach said “starters,” he didn’t sound happy. I went out very nervously. I snapped the ball. I was very rusty and I almost dropped it. I scrambled down to the 10 yard line for a first down. This was my chance to prove myself. Down, set, “hike” . I snapped the ball and I saw an opening. I let it fly, straight dot to his chest

“ Touchdown,” said the coach, smiling.

My other teammates were shocked alright Everybody said the coach practice is over we all went home the next day was the first game.

I woke up early in the morning and drove to  practice. We warmed up and drove to the Bronco stadium. We didn’t win since 2025 with Patrick Mahomes now in 2100 we had not been in a Super Bowl since then so when we arrived we warmed up then the announcer said let the game begin and I went on the field and said “hiiik”

One morning, a family of triplets named Nikka, Nora, and Nova, were up super early. The triplets were getting ready for the ternimate they were supposed to be on that day. Nikka, Nova and Nora all played volleyball since they were in 3rd grade. They all had made it to the nationals and surprisingly going up against the team of the triplets middle school bullies, the Blackout Ravens. The Blackout Ravens were famous for being a very pretty and good team of players. But not only were they popular, the triplets were popular too! They’re name was the Fallout Angels. Known for being very flexible and elegant when it came to volleyball.

After getting ready, they all eat something then get in the car as they are off to the game. As they were on their way, Nikka started feeling nervous as the game wasn’t just a few people, but thousands. Nova comforted her and told her “as long as we stay together and follow the rules, everything will be okay”. Nora said “Most importantly we gotta have fun”. They finally arrived at the game.

The car ride there was filled with stress and fear of not winning. Nikka was getting very nervous as they made their way to the game. They all talked so that they could get thing soff their mind so they don’t panic during the game.

The triplets go into the gym and start warming up with bumping, setting, and spiking the ball on the court. Soon, The team Blackout Ravens arrive. As they walk in, they stare at the triplets with a muggy look on their faces. As they did that they started warming up. The triplets ignore them as all they care about is having fun and possibly winning the competition. They warm up for a bit as the alarm for them to start getting into their positions for the start of the game.

The first game starts. The triplets get the first serve and as Nikka serves, she hits the ball hard, getting past the net for the first round. As the ball gets pasted back and forth, the final hit was by Chloe, the leader of Blackout Ravens. The ball got passed back and forth for the rest of the rounds until the final round came. They finally settled around their teams but as they did the Fallout Angels noticed that the Blackout Ravens were cheating by talking with the coach and calling the Fallout Angels plays fouls even if they weren’t. The triplets made a plan to play so good that the audience would even notice it wasn’t a foul. Once they started playing all of the Fallout Angels played great and when the Blackout Ravens weren’t looking, Nikka spiked the ball and as the time went off, The Fallout Angels won. The coach looked at the other team with surprise and anger. The coach went over to the director of the game and started yelling because he was planning to make the other team win but the other team won, meaning he wouldn’t get the money he was offered. The game director kicked him out and told him he was banned from the games and was no longer allowed to be a coach. As the coach was kicked out, the other team came up to the winning team and tried taking the winning trophy.

As Chloe took the trophy, she slammed it against the ground and had a tantrum. She was kicked along with the other team players. As they were kicked, the fallout angels were put on the news and were asked if they had any tactics to winning the game. As all the reporters swarmed them, all the sisters said they came to have fun and play good. The reporters nodded and left as they got into their car.

Months went by since that game and the girls were ironically known for that one game since so much went down that day. The triplets lived in LA, playing many more games of volleyball and telling the story of that one game. The triplets went to many games after that and became famous and rich and started playing even more.  They lived in LA the rest of her life and had a great time doing it with all of them they loved volleyball since they where little an happy it became a hobby that they loved and cared so much about so they played for the rest of their life.

Final Game of the Season

Final Game of the Season

By Max Boar

It was the last football game and the Green Bay Packers needed the win. The coach said that they only have one more practice before the game and they needed to win this game to be the best in the country.

Someone got hurt on the weekend, but no one knew who was injured. The coach got a text and it said’ I will not be at the game or the last practice’. Then the coach looked up at the top of his phone and it said Michael Ron texted him. He was the best player on the team and they needed him for the last game to take home a win and be the best.

So the coach texted the backup wide receiver that he will be needed to play at the last game to take home the win and be the best team and undefeated team in the country. After he got that text he started practicing for the last game because he knew that his team would get mad at him for not catching balls or making yards or maybe touchdowns.

So the whole week he was practicing to win. That practice day he showed up and proved a lot of people wrong on how good he was at football and they did their best they have in a long time.

So the coach made a deal that if they win and be the best he will give them all ice cream cards. He loved ice cream so he really wanted that and to not mess the whole game up for their team and himself. Then the day they drive to the game and a few hours of the time they just listened to music and slept on the bus ride until they showed up.

We all showed up at the game and it was an indoor football field at Lambeau Field. Which was weird because we were used to having an outdoor field.

We all walked into the field and it was really nice. Then we walked to the locker room to set all of our stuff down in the room and then we talked about what our main plays were doing to beat them without Michael Ron.

We all started talking about how we had to win this game and who we did have and who we do have. We all head out into the field to start our stretches and drills but the coach notice that they are way bigger than us. So then our coach made us push harder in the drills and stretches to show them that we aren’t scared of them.

Coach sends two people over to the refs for captains and when we get up there they are way bigger than us so one of my teammates is scared but I am not. The refs say heads or tails and when he flips it up we say tails and it spins down and lands on tails. Me and my teammate walk back to our side of the field and I tell the coach that we won the toss and we are going to be on defense of the ball kicking towards the sun so we can have the sun on our back on offense instead of defense. We kick off and the ball goes all the way to the other side of the field and they pick it up. They start running down the field till my team and I come out and hit him. He falls and drops the ball.

So it would be called a fumble and we pick it up and get tackled at the twenty yard line. Then our quarterback gets told what play to run. I run out for the ball and the rest of my teammates run curls. I got open and BOOM I got the ball in my hands and ran down the field for the touchdown.

I get past the line and we all start yelling because we scored.then the time gets down to the last 7 minutes and the score is 24 to 21 they have the ball and we are down points. So I play safety and the ball gets thrown in the air and I am on a different side of the ball so I can’t get it then everyone just hears a BOOM CRASH and yelling.

So I turn around and my teammate is running it down the field and then he scores the last points and we win the game with 10 seconds on the clock. Then after that we all get ice cream and go to bed happy as ever. And that is the last game for the Green Bay Packers. And they are the best.

One day Stevan and his best friend Moxxie had seen a flyer saying that a soccer team needed more players. They decided to call the number to join the team. The coach answered and warned the boys that if they were to “join the team now they would play a game the very next day”. The two boys thought about it for a minute and decided they would be okay with a game tomorrow and told the coach that they were in. The coach told the boys to come to the high school gym. When they arrived they saw the coach, she asked them what their sizes were to get them uniforms before the game. Once the boys had their uniforms the coach told them to spend the day in the field practicing. Stevan grabbed his soccer ball and Moxxie and him went to the field and set up the goals. Once they were all ready they started practicing. After they were finished practicing the sun was setting and the boys knew they needed rest for the game but they also knew they needed to buy cleats. So Moxxie and Stevan headed to their local store. Once they had made it they rushed straight to the shoe section, They found their sizes of cleats and went to checkout. After Stevan and Moxxie bought the shoes they parted ways to head home. Stevan had made it home safely and his parents had made dinner while he was gone. He sat at the dinner table with them and ate his food. Once he had finished eating he brushed his teeth and went straight to bed. He layed in his bed feeling weightless as his eyes grew heavy. Before he fell asleep he had set a timer so he could get ready for the game early.

Stevan woke up feeling well rested but then he realized he had slept through his alarm. He started to panic and get dressed for the game. He was gonna be late if he didnt leave soon. Once he had finished getting ready he got in his car and drove to the field for the game. As soon as he arrived he noticed everyone was already there including Moxxie. He sat down on the bench next to Moxxie as they waited for the game to start. Eventually everyone from both teams were there. The other team looked really competitive and strong, it intimidated Moxxie but Stevan thought that they wouldn’t actually do anything to hurt them if they had too to win the game. Moxie thought otherwise he was thinking that if they had to hurt them in any way they would even do it without reason. They all got ready on the field, Moxie looked so scared like a mouse surrounded by a hundred cats. Stevan was confident in their chance of winning almost like a proud courageous lion. They blew the whistle commencing the game. Stevan and Moxxie had no idea what was going on except that they were losing. Their team started making more goals as the game went on. Everything was going their way until the rain started. The field became a slip and slide and it was almost impossible to score for both teams. Moxxie passed the ball to Stevan, Stevan finally got an open shot but right before he was about to kick, He heard someone screaming bloody murder. Stevan quickly turned around to see Moxxie on the ground covered in mud. His knee was on the side of his leg.

He noticed one of the players from the other team standing over him. He was immediately filled with anger and fury. A whistle was blown to let everyone know to stop the game as if the scream didn’t already. Stevan ran over to Moxxie as he heard an ambulance in the distance. Moxxie was taken to the ER while the player who pushed him was kicked from the team. A few minutes later the game resumed. Stevan was too destressed to think. When his teammate passed to him again just like Moxxie did he had another open shot. People in the bleachers started counting down. Stevan went for the shot. He actually scored this put his team ahead of the other. With barely any time left there’s no way they can win now. After the game ended Stevan didn’t care that they had won he just wanted to go straight to the ER to check on Moxxie.

Stevan got out of his car and walked into the ER. A kind nurse greeted him and led him to Moxxie’s room. Moxie greeted him with a warm smile. “How are you feeling?” Stevan asked. Moxie replied “Not really but they said I should be out of here soon”. An idea popped into Stevans head “How about we head to my place to celebrate the win”? “Sure why not,” Moxxie said. “It’s nice to know you’re okay,” Stevan said. “You too,” Moxxie said with emotion in how voice. Stevan paused for a second but then said “I’m glad we’re friends”. “Me too Stevan me too” Moxie said with a sparkle in his eyes. Stevan asks “best friends forever right”? Moxxie replies quickly “of course forever”.

Girls Can Wrestle Too

Girls Can Wrestle Too

                            By: MaryAnn Rodreiguez

I’m really happy because girls wrestling has started for school, but I have one problem. The boys always say wrestling is for boys like them. Whatever I said to them I can wrestle. I wrestle better than you, I said and they said I bet you that you can’t win all your matches. So I said fine, I bet I can and I will, but not going to lie. I was scared if I was even going to win all those matches.

But anyways my name is LauraLee. So the next day after school I went to the YMCA to sign up for a gym pass and then paid the fee of $50 dollars for one year and went to the locker room to put my bag in and switch into my gym clothes and then headed up. First I started.

The next day I started practice for wrestling. First ran hall, then worked on take down, then hand fights, and ties. Then to end the day of practice we played a game called up ball with the coach. When I got home I ran two miles on a treadmill and lifted weights. Then I went to bed after I ate my supper. When  I woke up and went to school.

“ You have your first school match tonight. We are going to watch you to see you lose.” Tate said.

“Yeah,” Charley said.

“I said no I’m going to win.”

“No you’re not.”

“I said whatever,”and walked away. Later that night I got my singlet and put on my shoes and headgear, mouthguard and went out.”

“ Be ready and remember what you have to do.” said coach

I said, Yes

I heard the boys say “you’re going to lose”. I got on the mat and started wrestling and, in less than 10 seconds, I got to pin I and looked at the boys and smirked.

The coach said good job and congratulated me.

“ But work on your double leg.”

I said  alright and left to go get a drink of water, but guess who I saw? The boys Tate, Charley, and Alex.

“Surprised you won your first school match but that’s only one you got two more.” said Alex.

“I’m going to win. I don’t need you to say anything”

I walked off  and I finished my last two matches and won both of those. They were mad and left right after I won my last one. I watched my friend win her match.”

The next day I went to school and I got called straight to the office and guess who the boys were. They gave me a smirk. Mrs. Class said to sit down and I did, I was really nervous.

Mrs. Class said,” you’re apparently bullying them. “

“ No,I was not and if anyone was getting bullied was me, by them. Look on the cameras I can guarantee you they were bullying me and so many other kids in this school. “

“ Alright, I will be looking at the footage.”

She looked at the footage and guess what she saw? The boys bullying me and the other kids.”

They got expelled for a week. I was glad . But we only had one match for the season left on Friday and this cloud break my roll and lose my streak. I was nervous because we are going against the best school in the state. The boys said they were coming to see me lose but I was very confident but also nervous.  We get on the bus and listen to my hype music and we get there. I got three matches. I win one, then two. But my last one against the best girl they have, I’m more nervous than I ever was. Then I stepped on the mat and warmed up. I put my red strap on and got into position. I went for a double and pinned her in a record time of 20 seconds. I won all my matches. I was so happy and I proved the boys wrong. The next day they came back to school.

“You’re still wrong and I want to challenge you in a wrestling match tomorrow .” Said Tate.

I said yes but the thing I that it would be wrestling Tate the best wrestling at the time but he was also 20 pounds heavier. I still said yes. I woke up and got ready for today but I was really nervous, we met up and got into position.”

“YOUR GOING DOWN !!!”

“SHUT UP TATE!!”

  “GO”

We started and I went for a double and then did a half nelson and pinned him.

“I’M STILL BETTER!!”

I said obviously not if I won. He just walked off and I think I got him off my back. But it looks like I’m better than him and girls can wrestle if I just won. So it looks like girls can wrestle too.

The Legacy of the Thirds: A Football Team’s Journey

The Legacy of the Thirds: A Football Team’s Journey

Tyrone the 3rd

In the small town of Riverton, football is more than just a sport; it’s a tradition that binds generations together. Among the many teams that have graced the local stadium, one stands out for its unique composition and remarkable legacy – the team known as “The Thirds.” This team, composed entirely of players who are the third generation in their families to bear their names, has become a symbol of continuity, pride, and excellence in Riverton.

The team includes five standout players: Tyrone the 3rd, Jamal the 3rd, Jimmy the 3rd, Spencer the 3rd, and Dingle Bary the 3rd. Each of these young men carries not only the weight of their own ambitions but also the expectations and dreams of their fathers and grandfathers before them.

Tyrone the 3rd, the team’s quarterback, is known for his strategic mind and leadership skills. His grandfather, Tyrone Sr., was a legendary player in the 1960s, leading Riverton High to multiple state championships. Tyrone Jr. followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a celebrated coach after his playing days were over. Now, Tyrone the 3rd aims to uphold the family legacy by combining his natural talent with the wisdom passed down through generations. His ability to read the game and make split-second decisions has earned him the respect of teammates and opponents alike.

Jamal the 3rd, the team’s star running back, brings speed and agility to the field. His grandfather, Jamal Sr., was a trailblazer, breaking racial barriers in the 1970s and becoming one of the first African American players to achieve statewide     recognition. Jamal Jr. continued this legacy, earning a scholarship to play college football and later returning to Riverton as a community leader. Jamal the 3rd honors his family’s history by playing with determination and grace, inspiring younger players to pursue their dreams regardless of obstacles.

Jimmy the 3rd, the wide receiver, is known for his incredible catching ability and athleticism. His grandfather, Jimmy Sr., was a local hero during the 1980s, famous for his game-winning catches and sportsmanship. Jimmy Jr. carried on the tradition, becoming a high school coach and mentoring countless young athletes. Jimmy the 3rd embodies the spirit of his predecessors, always striving for excellence and pushing himself to new heights. His dedication to the sport and his team is evident in every game he plays.

Spencer the 3rd, the defensive lineman, is a force to be reckoned with on the field. His grandfather, Spencer Sr., was a dominant player in the 1950s, known for his strength and tenacity. Spencer Jr. followed suit, becoming a respected coach and instilling a love of the game in his son. Spencer the 3rd continues this legacy with his powerful presence and unwavering commitment to defense. His ability to disrupt opposing offenses and protect his teammates makes him an invaluable asset to the team.

The Game That Changed Everything

The Game That Changed Everything

Tyler Jackson, the 16-year-old captain of the Willow Creek Wildcats, had one dream, to lead his team to their first-ever state championship. But this season wasn’t just about soccer. A rift within the team and personal doubts threatened to tear apart everything Tyler had worked for. This is the story of how he, along with his friends Emma, Malik, and Coach Harper, confronted adversity on and off the field to achieve the impossible.

The Wildcats had always been a tight-knit group. But tension began to surface as the semifinal game against the undefeated Silver Valley Strikers approached. Tyler’s best friend and the team’s star midfielder, Emma Williams, had grown increasingly frustrated with his leadership style.

“Tyler, you don’t listen,”  Emma snapped practice one afternoon. “You’re so focused on scoring that you ignore our practiced plays. Soccer isn’t a one-man show.”

Tyler bristled at her words. He felt the weight of the team’s expectations on his shoulders, and he believed he had to take charge to lead them to victory. “I’m doing what I think is best for the team,” he shot back. “If you can’t handle it, maybe you’re not as committed as I thought.”

The argument left a bitter taste in the air. Malik Thompsin, the team’s goalkeeper and peacemaker, tried to meditate. “Guys, we need to work together, not against each other,” he pleaded. But the damage had been done. Emma’s trust in  Tyler was shaken, and Tyler began doubting whether he was the right person to lead.

The rift couldn’t have come at the worst time. The Wildcats were about to face their toughest opponent yet, the Silver Valley Strikers, a team known for their speed, skill, and Ethan Miller, the league’s top scorer. Tyler knew the Wildcats couldn’t afford to be divided, but he struggled to address the growing tension.

Coach Harper noticed the discord during practice. “What’s going on with you two?” she demanded, pulling Tyler and Emma aside. “If you don’t resolve this, you’ll lose the game before you even step foot on the field.”

Emma crossed her arms. “He doesn’t trust me to make decisions. He’s acting like he has to do everything himself.”

Tyler hesitated, then admitted, “I just feel like if I don’t take control, we’ll fall apart.”

Coach Harper’s voice softened. “Tyler, leadership isn’t about doing everything yourself. It’s about trusting your team. And Emma, if you see something he’s missing, tell him but do it in a way that builds him up, not tears him down. The Wildcats need both of you to win.”

The day of the semifinal arrived. The stadium buzzed with energy as fans packed the stands. From the first whistle, the Strikers dominated the field. By halftime, the Wildcats were down 2-0, and Tyler felt the weight of failure pressing down on him.

In the locker room, Tyler stood silently, unsure what to say. Then, Emma spoke up. “We’re not playing as a team,” she said, her voice steady but firm. “Tyler, we need you to lead, but you have to trust us too. Let’s do this together.”

Tyler looked around the room, seeing the determination in his teammates’ eyes. “You’re right,” he said. “Let’s stick to our strategy. Emma, call the plays. Malik, keep doing what you do best. I’ll be there when you need me.”

The second half began, and the Wildcats played like a different team. Emma orchestrated the midfield with precision, threading passes through the Strikers’ defense. Tyler scored their first goal with a powerful strike, reigniting hope. Malik, with his trademark resilience, made save after save, keeping the Wildcats in the game.

With just five minutes left, Emma executed a perfect corner kick. Tyler leaped into the air and headed the ball into the net, tying the game. The crowd erupted, but the Wildcats weren’t done yet. In the final moments, Emma intercepted a pass and sent a long ball to Tyler, who dribbled past Ethan Miller and scored the winning goal.

The Wildcats had done the impossible. They defeated the Strikers 3-2 and advanced to the championship.

As the team celebrated on the field, Tyler and Emma exchanged a glance. “I couldn’t have done this without you, “Tyler admitted.

Emma smiled. “And I couldn’t have done it without you trusting me.”

Their bond, once strained, was now stronger than ever. Coach Harper beamed with pride as she addressed the team. “You showed heart, discipline, and teamwork today. This is what champions are made of.”

The Wildcats’ journey wasn’t just winning a soccer game. For Tyler, it was about learning to trust his teammates and embracing the fact that leadership isn’t about control, it’s about collaboration. For Emma, it was about finding her voice and using it to strengthen the team. And for Malik, it was a reminder that optimism and resilience could carry a team through even the toughest challenges.

The Wildcats went on to win the state championship, but the true victory lay in the lessons they learned along the way. Sports, they realized, weren’t just about competition, they were about growth and connection.

Injured Volley

Injured Volley

One month. I have to have this ankle brace on for one month! I have a volleyball game in two weeks and I won’t be able to play. But… it isn’t the exact truth. I’ll start from the beginning, the day it happened. September 19, 2002, my brother and I were playing and he pushed me to hit the ball. Got a sprained ankle and I couldn’t play for the next month. I had to sit down and watch my teammates and friends practice and play.

It was maybe a week, week and a half later and I was trying to practice at home but my mom obviously didn’t let me. I practiced anyway, hoping my ankle would get better before the game. At school, I had the norm, classes, tests, annoying people. Everyone teases me for the ankle brace and I’m so irritated!

Charlie, my brother, has finally left me alone. He’s the one who sprained my ankle and he finally let me be. I got peace at home, just not at school. Charlie and I have no classes, and that’s good. But I have three classes with his friends, and they won’t stop teasing me. My mind is gonna blow because of those maniacs.

Few days ago, my coach said I could play the next game but when it came, he rejected me and I couldn’t play. I sat with my family, mood spoiled and hopefulness gone. Throughout the rest of the game, my mom tried to comfort me, but it didn’t work. My attitude was sour and no sweetness was fixing it. I had an attitude for the rest of the week, I couldn’t play at practice, and I couldn’t focus on my school work. I couldn’t focus on anything besides my ankle and volleyball.

The next volleyball game was in three days and I still had my ankle brace on. My coach still wouldn’t budge on letting me play in the game. I had to come to all the practices just to do nothing but sit there and watch everyone else practice. Everyday when I went back home, I was never in a good mood. I would come home and do my homework or get in the shower. No small talk. No, “How was your day?” Nothing.

The day of the volleyball game came and I was at school, in morning practice, watching everyone play while trying to convince the coach to let me play at the game. The coach never listened to me and either cut me off or flat out ignored me. It wasn’t the best position to be in, but I got mad and stormed off. Leaving practice and to the girls locker room. I stayed in there until the practice was over and my teammates came in. My friend, Mia, once she changed out came over to me.

“You okay?” Mia questioned.

“No, I’m not okay. Coach won’t let me play today at the game even though my ankle brace gets taken off in two days! What could possibly happen to make my ankle worse?”

“Well… You could break it?”

I look over at Mia and scoff. “That’s not helping much.”

She looked down and I could tell I upset her. I sigh and place my hands in my lap.

“Look.. I didn’t mean to come off rude it’s just.. Coach is being so stubborn with letting me play.”

She was silent for a moment and I was going to speak up but Mia cut me off.

“I get that, but the coach is just looking out for you. They’re just…. concerned. They don’t want you getting hurt even more.”

I listened to what Mia said and throughout the rest of the day, I slowly understood why the coach wasn’t letting me practice or play. Until seventh period, when I had to leave to go to the game, I was more focused on finishing my school work instead of being mad I couldn’t play. When I got onto the bus to go to the game with the rest of my team, I sat by Mia and tried to forget I wasn’t even going to play at this game.

Once we get to the school, I walk with Mia to the gym and chat with her while they get ready. After a bit, when I was sitting on the bench with my phone until the coach walked up to me and started talking to me. She said I could play at the game today and I was so excited, I couldn’t help but jump up and down. One problem was that even though I came to the game, I didn’t have my uniform! My mom had come to the game, but she obviously wouldn’t have brought my uniform so there I was without one. No one had a spare so someone had to drive back to the school. Luckily it was only a 20 minute drive but that means it’d take 40 minutes for them to come back! The game started soon and we didn’t have time for that.

As we were all getting ready for the game, we were still panicking because I didn’t have a uniform and I’d play soon. In the end, a school teacher drove it here, and I had my uniform just in time before the game started. I got into position and served the ball, flying over the net. The other team’s player hit the ball and flew back to our side. Mia set the ball and my teammate spiked it. The ball hitting the ground and giving us the point. This continued for a bit until the other team caught on, and we had to start hitting the ball back farther.

In the end, we won the game and we all celebrated. When we were driving back to the school so our parents could pick us up, Mia and I sat by each other again and were having a blast.

“We won! And I got to play! I actually got to play!” I said, I was full of excitement.

“You literally spiked the ball so well! The other team couldn’t even hit it!”

“Thanks, Mia. You really helped me forget about the fact the coach wouldn’t let me play at first. It made it all the more fun.”

Mia and I chatted for a bit before we got back to the school and my mom picked me up.

“Hey, Mom.”

“Yes, sweetie?”

“Is it okay if I get my brace off tomorrow? I played tonight and my ankle didn’t even hurt!”

My mom smiled and she nodded. We got into the car and drove home while I rambled on and on about how the game went and how fun it was. When we got home, we ate dinner and then had a movie night, celebrating my team’s win and having some family time. My brother finally apologized about my ankle and I forgave him, letting it go since it didn’t hurt anymore.

The next day, I got my brace off and I went back to school, happy and stress free. The day went by quickly but it was fun. It was amazing and it was a good day to end the week off with. Looks like a sprained ankle can’t stop you from playing volleyball.

The Miss Move

The Miss Move

-By Taylor White

For playing volleyball for 2 years this is not how I thought my game would end up. I guess I am not as good of a volleyball player as I thought I was.

First our teachers say we can leave class early to get ready. Then we put on our jerseys on (My jersey is #34). Then we grab our bags and get on the bus. We start to leave the school. The volleyball game is 45 minutes away. I listen to music and I start to hear people talking about me. I know that they are talking about me but I act like I don’t hear. The girls on the bus look like they are playing a game of telephone by how much they are whispering to each other.

As we are walking into the volleyball game I can hear the crowd start to yell and cheer. After me and my team start to walk on the court we start to get our gear on (knee pads and shoes). Then after that we start to warm up. I can start to tell it is not going to be a good game. The game has finally started. For some reason I am not a starter, which I normally am. I start to get upset and disappointed in myself for not being a starter.

We are now on the second set and I get to play. I start to miss all of my serves and a lot of digs. All of my sets were double contacts. Coach takes me out and doesn’t say a word. I know that she is disappointed. I start to cry and get upset. My teammates say

“It is okay, everyone has bad days”.

But I ignore them because I am so mad at myself.

Then my mom comes down the bleachers and asks me if I need a drink. I say no and I can tell she knows I am not okay. I watched the third set and my teammates did great. We get in a huddle and everyone says

 “You guys did great” and

“Nice teamwork”

When the huddle is over my coach puts me in. I am glad I finally get to play. I am so glad that the coach gave me a second chance. Thank God that she believes in me. We all tell each other to call it and move our feet. The sets and passes from my teammates are great but I keep missing kills. I finally got a good pass and my teammate messed it up. Now I am mad at my teammate because that could’ve been a great point. Even though I make mistakes like that too. Now I keep messing up because of how mad I am. Our coach called a time out. Coach says

“You guys are doing great, just use more communication.”

After that we go back out and high five each other. We get back in the game and we don’t let them get in our heads. Next thing you know we get the ball back. It is my teammates turn to serve. She gets an ace. We all congratulate her and we all start to get hyped up. Our mindset is that nobody can stop us now. We all know that we have to keep going.

After that we started to sweep them off of their feet. We start taking so many points from them. It is going well but all of a sudden something terrible happens. They serve and my teammate goes for the ball and she gets injured. She starts balling and screaming for help. Everyone rushes over to see if she is okay. Our coach calls an ambulance. 2 minutes later they finally arrive and take her to the hospital.

Everyone is worried about her and our coach is trying to figure out who will take her spot. We finally figure out who is going to play. Then our coach gets a phone call and it is our teammates’ parents. They say she is doing better but then, they told us the worst thing that could ever happen happened. She tore her ACL. After we found that out we prayed for her.

Then we finally get back on the court and start playing again. I am a little worried but I tell myself I am going to do great. I serve first when we get back on the court and I get an ace. Someone spikes the ball and I get the dig. I am so proud of myself for it. Now it is 23-24 I set my teammate up and BAM!! She gets the spike and we win the game. My team and the crowd were cheering. Everyone was so happy.

WE WON!!

The Winning Shot

The Winning Shot

By Johnson the III

The ball gets passed to me, now it’s up to me to shoot the winning goal, I shoot and I- (A few days earlier) I’m James, a 13 year old normal kid in school with nothing good going on in my life. I only have two friends, George and Bob. I get made fun of for being A ginger so it kinda sucks but I’m used to it now, I really just want to play a sport so I look around the school for sign up sheets.  George, Bob and I are walking around for sports sign up and we come across Kevin.

“What’s up, losers?” Kevin said.

“Leave us alone, Kevin,” I said.

Kevin kicks me right in the shin and I fall on the floor and start holding my shin.

“That really hurt, Kevin,” I explained.

“Down the hall is soccer sign up.  Go there and face me.  There’s a few days until the first game.  If you beat me, I won’t mess with you anymore.”

“Fine, we will.”

George, Bob and I walked towards the papers to sign up.  After signing up, the bell rings and school ends.  I walked home and got on my laptop to study soccer.

“I should practice.  Maybe I should buy some equipment like a soccer ball and a small net to practice accuracy,” I said to myself.

As I walked to the store, I hoped the equipment was in my budget.  So I walked into the store and went to the sports section, I found the soccer ball and net and, to my surprise, it was in my budget.  I grab the equipment and go to the cashier.

“Just these?” the cashier asked.

“Yes, this will be all.”

“Alrighty, that’ll be $23.67.”

“Okay.”

Pulls out the money and gives the cashier the money.

“Here you go.”

“Thanks, have a great day and please come again.”

“You too and I will come again.”

I walked out of the store and walked home and set up the net, pulling out the ball.

“Ok, time to practice.”

I shoot and miss.

“Dang it, I’m not good.  I need more practice.  I’m going to study some more.”

I pull out my phone to study more and I see for most accuracy, you want to use the inside of the foot and for a stronger kick, to use your toes.  So I kick again, this time with my inner foot.  I get closer to the net but miss.  So I will try again and make it.

“Finally I made it.  Wait, if I invite my friends, we can all practice.  So I called my friends and invited them and they agreed to come over.

My friends arrived so we all went outside to my new equipment.

“Ok, one of us will be goalie, and the other can practice passing and goaling.”

“Ok, I agree, so I guess I will be goalie,” said Bob.

“And I can pass it to you, James, and then you can shoot to goal,” said George.

Ok, I like that.  So we start practicing and shooting goals.  All of us slowly get better at soccer.  A few hours after practicing, George and Bob had to go home so I said bye and packed up the equipment.  After putting everything away, I head inside to watch some TV and eat dinner.  My man and I finished a movie and we went to bed excited for the game in two days.  The next morning, I get out of bed and get ready for school.

“Crap, I forgot I was playing against my bully.  Now I’m nervous.”

I arrive at school and see Kevin outside the main doors.

“I hope he doesn’t see me,” I whisper.  I walked to the north doors instead and I walked to my class and can’t stop thinking about my game tomorrow.

Brrrrrr Ding Dong

Finally the bell goes off and I can leave.  I rushed to the exit, hoping I didn’t see Kevin and, to my surprise, I didn’t.  I rushed home so I could study soccer a little more.  When I arrived at home, I saw that my mom had cooked me some spaghetti.

“Thanks Mom.  I love spaghetti,” I said.

“You’re welcome, I knew you would like it.”

I ate my dinner and went to my room.  I got on MeTube and I studied some more soccer moves.

“Man, I’m tired.  I need a lot of rest for tomorrow.  I got up from my desk and laid down to take a long nap.  After that, in the morning, I got up and got ready for my soccer game.  My mom drove me to the game.  There was still half an hour until the game started.

“Mom, I should go meet up with my team and coach.”

“That sounds like a good idea.  Go ahead and meet them.”

“Ok.”

I got up and went to meet my team and coach.  Luckily, my friends were on the team.

“THE GAME IS STARTING IN TEN MINUTES,” the announcer said.

“Ok, everyone get in position,” Coach said.

“Yes, Coach,” the whole team said.

Everyone got into position and waited for the game to start.  As we were waiting, the announcer spoke and said, “ THE GAME IS STARTING.”

The coach whistled signifying the game started.  Everyone was running towards the ball but the opposing team got the ball so I ran and stole it.  I’m running towards the goal and I passed it to them.  They got the ball and shot it.  They made it.  We got back into position.  It’s the opposing team’s ball and Kevin’s dribbling the ball.  He’s dodging my whole team.  So I rushed towards him and, when I went to take it, he kicked my leg and I fell to the ground and the coach paused the game to bench me.

“What happened?” Coach said.

“I was kicked in the leg.  It was Kevin.”

“Okay, I’ll have a word with him after the game.”

The game went on and the opposing team was in the lead 7 to 4.  I noticed my leg didn’t hurt anymore so I looked down at it and saw the bruise was gone.  So I stood up and went back in the game and I took the ball and scored.

The fourth quarter had 10 seconds left and the game was tied.  My teammate had the ball and he passed to me.  Now it was up to me to shoot the winning goal.

I shoot and I…

SCORE!

The Soccer Match

The Soccer Match

By Alex Robert

The time I woke up was around 7 am to my alarm, I could smell breakfast being made by my mother down stairs. Then I heard my mother calling me from downstairs.

“David come downstairs and get breakfast”

Then I groaned as I stood up and went down stairs. As I was going down the stairs I saw my dad watching TV in the living room.

When I sat down at the kitchen table my mom handed me pancakes with sausages. While I’m eating I see my sister coming down the stairs with her dog. Then my sister grabbed the dog leash and her shoes and was about to take the dog for a walk.

After she left I finished my food then my mom asked if i wanted to go to the store after my soccer match.

“Sure mom that sounds fun,” David said.

Then after David finishes his food he gets up and gets ready for soccer practice, as i was about to leave my mom says “Don’t be too late home”

As I walk to soccer practice I see one of my friends. I walked towards them and they were going to soccer practice too. When we got to soccer practice we put on our equipment and got ready for soccer practice.

When we were ready I walked to my coach and asked him what we are going to be doing today. The coach said

“we are just going to see how far you can kick the ball and how good your accuracy is” the coach said

I say ok and then wait till we start. When we did start I did the second best but my friend did better than me by a hair. When we were done with practice I had to go home because I didn’t want to be late when I was walking home. I remembered that I had a game coming up but I got a couple days, I said as I walked home. When I did get home, dinner was ready. I was almost late but I made it in time. I sat down at the dinner table and saw my sister, dad and mom waiting. We were going to be eating pizza. When i sat down my dad asked me something

“So how was practice today” dad says

“It was good but my friend beat my by a hair” david said

“You should practice to beat him then” dad says

“Oh no yeah for sure I will” david says

When I was done eating dinner I had to go to bed so I could practice soccer tomorrow. When I woke up to my alarm I had to get ready for school. First I brushed my teeth then I got my backpack ready by making my lunch and eating breakfast. When I got done with my breakfast I grabbed my stuff and went to the bus stop. After i wanted for the bus i saw my friend walking towards the bus,

“Yo why are you riding the bus today aren’t you driving to school?” david says

“Well my mom needed to go to work and my dad was still asleep so i had to take the bus” david’s friend says

“Oh well i guess you can sit next to me because the bus is kinda crazy” david says

“Wait how crazy?” david’s friend says

“Oh you’ll see” david says while snickering

When they got on the bus David saw an open seat they went to but a pen went through the air and almost hit them, but it hit the ground as they sat down people were screaming and the bus was shaking alot. While it took a while but we made it to the school as we got of we saw someone trip because someone pushed someone into him but he ignored him and kept walking as me and my friend got of the bus we had to wait outside the school because we came to early as the school doors opened we went inside then i remember that i forgot to practice last night. As the day went on the thought of me not being able to play correctly was stuck in my head as the day ended and i went to the soccer field and got ready for my game, this was the only time i could practice and i did my best i didn’t miss a single goal in practice as practice was ending i saw the other team i was going to play against walking towards the field as we were getting ready to start my friend had to go answer a call he was getting from someone then our coach called us over so we can get in our positions we were ready and my friend was right next to me. Our coach blew the whistle as i ran for the ball the other team got it i stayed next to there goal so i could get passed the ball then i got the chance the ball was going towards me and i kicked it and i see the ball go through a group of the other team and come out from the other side then to there goal it was about to be caught but then it curved to the right and went it the goal and we won as i ran to my team we all huddled together and i was getting carried by them they carried me to the benches and sat me down as i was drinking the other team came over and said

“So you think your good huh” one of the other team members say

“No not really i’m just happy i got the goal” david says

“Just wait till we get to go against you again you will lose horribly” the other teams member says

“I sure do not believe it for us to lose” david say

“Oh you’ll see” the other member says

The end
