Yellowjackets S1 E8, E9, E10

Spoilers

I watched the final three episodes of Yellowjackets last night and I did not have the chance to do the write ups. I had not intended on watching the rest of season one, but it was so compelling that I couldn’t stop. I knew I would not have time to do the write up, but I did not let that stop me.

This show is just awesome… and bat-shit crazy.

When it started, I thought their big secret was that they did something that led to cannibalism. However, the reporter that Misty had kidnapped dropped that guess so casually that it was clear that there was way more than that going on.

Trying to go into the details of these three episodes is really a taxing issue. So many things went down and I am still not really sure what is going on. I love it.

When they were getting the area cleared for that airplane take off, I had more flashbacks to LOST- with the raft at the end of season one. The raft was more successful than the plane, which said something.

I was shocked when the crew crashed into Natalie’s place seconds before she kills herself and carts her off screaming.

Lottie Matthews looks to be behind the Travis murder and Natalie’s kidnapping. She was also one of the wilderness crazies. What is her deal? I am guessing season two will go into this more.

We saw Jackie’s death, freezing outside in the snow. In the present, Adam is stabbed to death by Shauna, and Misty comes in like a Mafia fixer. She said that it did not matter if they find the torso of Adam. All they need to get rid of is the head and hands. Cold.

Oh, Van survived. They discovered that she was alive as they were giving her the Viking funeral and burning her corpse. Thankfully, they were able to get her out of the fire before she caught on fire too much.

I loved this first season and now my challenge is to find the second season on streaming somewhere before season three drops.

“No Compass”

An exciting episode. With the three current day women dropping off the money, and the dramatic danger at the end of the episode with a pack of wolves, this was exciting throughout the whole episode.

So many things happened. Taissa had tackled the guy who was blackmailing them, but took an elbow to the face allowing him to get away. Kevin discovered that his gun was messed up and questioned Natalie about it. Shauna came back and had sex with Adam.

I saw that Christina Ricci was on the credits and I did not know that she was on this show. So I looked up who she played. I thought it might be current day Natalie, but I was shocked to see that she is playing current day Misty. Couldn’t believe it. Then, we see Misty and her sociopathy tendencies as she interviewed the reporter.

The wolves attack at the end with them tearing off parts of Van’s face. It was a brutal reminder how dangerous of a situation that they were in.

The whole Shauna/Jackie story with Shauna’s pregnancy was another key component of the episode. Jackie found the diary with the truth in it after Shauna had told her that it was Randy who had gotten her pregnant.

Three more episodes of season one.

“Saints”

Man, there are some things going down on this show.

There were several huge things that made me feel fairly anxious from both the crash site and the present day. Just to touch on a few of them…

  • What the hell is up with Taissa and the dirt eating? She seems very feral-like when she is doing it. She is the one terrorizing her son? Why?
  • The whole almost-abortion scene with Shauna was tense as could be.
  • Every time they are in the water and they shoot from that outside perspective just above the water level, I anticipate something attacking them, like it is some creature watching them. The baptism scene was wild. Not sure what is going on with that.
  • Um… how crazy is Misty? A little kidnapping between friends.
  • The whole scene with Natalie and Travis in the past was nice.
  • We find out for sure that Jackie is dead in the present. How and when is a mystery.
  • Lottie is having visions. The maggots inside the deer they just killed shows this. She also had one as she was underwater being baptized by Laura Lee.
  • The blackmailer has texted instructions to Taissa and Natalie. It’s go time…
  • Supernatural events are becoming more involved in the story.

This is wild and it still reminds me very much of LOST. In fact, every time I write one of these up, I want to say that the survivors are on an island. Funnily enough, young Taissa, who wanted to go off to try and find her way for help, said that they were not on an island. Ha ha.

“Blood Hive”

Last episode felt a little down from the heights of the first three of Yellowjackets season one. Episode five kicked things back into gear for me.

This episode brought some mysteries from the crash to the forefront, including something very strange that happened as the girls did a “seance.” Then, we focused on the surprises in the present day with the “suicide” of Travis as the mysterious symbol that we have been seeing from the past showed up on the ground below Travis’s hanging body.

I would also never want to get on Shauna’s bad side because she seems to know exactly what she is doing. The way she handled her daughter’s attempt at blackmail was pitch perfect.

These women are all extremely strong. What is up with present day Misty? She is so manipulative and she makes me wonder exactly what she is up to.

Taissa’s speech to the reporters, which was intended to be a withdrawal speech, turned fiery and showed her own zip.

There is so much paranormal stuff going on around these characters that the show has not even touched on much. The woman in the tree, whom Sammy claimed was behind the message, is just one example.

This show has so many cool little tidbits that I am excited to find out how it all ties together. This one was a great episode.

“Bear Down”

The stories from the crash site and the present day go to show us more about these characters.

In the past (I honestly nearly typed ‘The Island’), the kids began training with the gun to try and go hunting. Natalie turns out to be the best shot. She and Travis go hunting and bond on the trip. Other girls discovered a downed plane in the woods. In the present, Natalie goes out with Kevin to try and get info on Travis’s apparent suicide, which she thinks is a murder. Shauna has an affair with Adam and then goes on a weird night together. Taissa does not respond well to a party when she goes off on a rich potential donor who wants to know about what really happened.

There is a flashback to pre-plane crash involving Natalie and her abusive father. We get to see how he died. The show initially made us think that Natalie killed him, but it turned out to be an accident.

Misty is a real bizarre character. She feels dangerous in a Desperate Housewives kind of way.

There is a lot of character development in this episode, and that is very important, but to be honest, this was my least favorite episode so far. It showed us a lot of things about these people, but nothing that was that major, outside of Natalie’s father.

“The Dollhouse”

Boy, when this show picked up, it really picked up.

Not saying that the first two episodes were bad. Far from it. I was thoroughly engaged with what they were doing pre-episode three. Now, after “The Dollhouse” there are just a ton of unexplained moments and storylines that have me completely engaged.

  • Who killed Travis? It looked like a hanging, but Nat was sure he did not kill himself.
  • What is with the man with no eyes? Why is he tormenting Taissa.
  • What did Taissa’s son mean when he said that she was not the bad one?
  • What happened in the attic of that cabin?
  • Is Shauna right about Jeff having an affair? And does to wrongs make a right?
  • What is Taissa trying to pull with the reporter?

I loved this episode and the storylines that the show is setting up are exciting and mysterious. I really do not know what is going on and that is thrilling.

Great acting so far. I am very pleased that season one has arrived on Netflix. I hope to be able to find season two as well somewhere.

“Pilot”

“F Sharp”

Two episodes in an I am hooked.

Yellowjackets arrived on Netflix a few weeks ago and I wanted to add this to my watchlist. I have heard some positive things about the show and I thought that it would be great to watch despite the increasingly large list of shows that I am currently watching.

A group of high school female soccer players, who were on their way to nationals, have their plane crash in the wilderness and they are forced to survive.

The scene with the plane crash was right up there with the best plane crash scenes I have seen on TV. Clearly, the best plane crash scene is from LOST, but this one was right behind it.

In fact, part of the reason I was so imbued by Yellowjackets is that the show reminded me a lot of LOST. LOST is my favorite show of all time and Yellowjacket certainly shared some traits with it.

First, the plane crash in an isolated location. Here it is in the wilderness. There is something weird going on around this area too, although I do not think we will be seeing any Others. There is some strange design carved into a tree that will become more prominent.

Secondly, the show has a large cast of characters and does an amazing job of developing them almost immediately. Many shows with large casts struggle to get me interested in the different characters, but this one has a group of intriguing characters that grab you attention immediately.

Another similarity between Yellowjackets and LOST is that the story’s narrative function is told with both scenes from the present and scenes from the past through flashbacks. The first episode introduced things to us by showing things that led up to the crash and showing us years later. They allow us to piece things together on our own without feeling the need to lay out ever little bit along they way.

There is also a secret going on. When the Oceanic 6 made it back to the real world, they had a story and kept the truth from everyone. There is obviously something that the girls who had been rescued kept secret, promising never to speak of it again. I have a sneaking suspicion in involves what they had eaten during their time stranded. I am anxious to find out more.

Misty is a weaselly young woman who found her personal strength after the accident, but you can see that she is very manipulative, as she destroyed the plane’s black box so she could remain being seen in the positive light that she had suddenly been seen. I can see a lot of similarities between Molly and Ben Linus.

The entire season one (10 episodes) is on Netflix, but I do not see season two there, which means I may have to go searching for the show somewhere. I know it originally aired on Showtime. I loved these first two episodes and I am excited about continuing the show.
