Sunday Morning Sidewalk #11

Spoilers

“Sleep of the Just”

Sunday Morning Sidewalk started a new series this week, The Sandman, from Netflix. Based on a classic DC Comics comic book from Neil Gaiman, The Sandman was a show that I had always intended to watch, but just never got around to doing. It has eleven episodes on Netflix so it will be our new Sunday Morning Sidewalk into early June.

At least, that is the current schedule. I do hope that the remainder of The Sandman is an improvement over this first episode, because I was not very impressed with it.

Before I go into the negatives, the show looked absolutely amazing. The visuals were stunning and it was clear that this show did not skimp on a budget for it.

However, there was so much exposition that I had a difficult time keeping my focus on the story the show was telling. It bounced around at first and did not establish the feel well. Then, the story moved on to Charles Dance, a well known character actor playing a man named Roderick Burgess, who was able to capture Morpheus in some contraption. He then holds him for ten years.

The problem with this was that Burgess’s motivation was very muddy. Did he want his deceased son back from the dead or did he want immortality and wealth? It seemed as if he wanted all of that in order to free Morpheus. Poor Morpheus had to lay inside this glass container naked for such a long time. Get the man a blanket at least.

Then there was another son, Alex, who was ignored and verbally abused by Burgess. Alex accidentally killed his father and then he held on to Morpheus for an undetermined amount of time. The world suffered from some kind of sleep sickness, but the show really did not go into any specifics on that.

Oh, Boyd Holbrook is here too, as some kind of figure that opposes Morpheus. IMDB tells me his name is The Corinthian. I was not a Sandman comics reader so I do not know whom that was. He seemed to be a potential future antagonist. Not sure why.

The story of this episode was a mess and I was very disappointed in the show. The main story of the Burgess family did not grasp my attention and did not seem to be a worth story to kick off this series with. Again, I do not know if this is a vital comic storyline adapted or if this was completely new for the series, but I did not enjoy it much.

I do hope this gets better as it moves along or else I might have to looking into the possibility of adjusting the Sunday Morning Sidewalk schedule.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #147

April 5

It is time for the EYG Comic Cavalcade once again. I have to shout out to the comic company Mad Cave. I have really found that this independent company has been releasing some excellent books recently, picking up their game. I think this company is just behind Image (close to a tie with DC) for me on my current favorite company list. 1. Marvel, 2. Image, 3. DC, 4. Mad Cave, 5. Dynamite, 6. Boom! Studios, 7. DSTLRY (DSTLRY would be higher if they had a more consistent release schedule) 8. Dark Horse 9. Oni, 10. Keenspot. This list is consistently fluid, of course, as it may depend on specific books released.

Other books this week:

All-New Venom #5. Written by Al Ewing and art by Carlos Gomez. Cover art was done by Adam Kubert & Laura Martin. In the EYG Comic Cavalcade #143, I speculated that maybe Marvel was pulling a swerve and not making this all-new Venom one of the four suspects that they were promoting as the suspects. I had a gut feeling that they were pulling out a surprise and I was right about it. I am not sure how I feel about the reveal of the All-New Venom. We’ll see how it goes.

Spider-Boy #18. “Keys to the Kingdom.” Written by Dan Slott and art by Paco Medina. Cover art was done by Paco Medina and Edgar Delgado. Spider-Boy has to face off with Mister Negative, despite Spider-Man’s objections.

Past Time #1. Written by Joe Harris and art by Russell Olson. Mark Chiarello did the cover art. One of those new Mad Cave books that I really liked. The story had a time frame from early days of baseball and the days of the first night game at Wrigley Field. There are a lot of things going on in this book and I loved it.

You Never Heard of Me #3. Written by Iolanda Zanfardino and illustrated by Elisa Romboli. Will is having a difficult time adjusting to his powers to see the best and worst moment of anyone’s life (which switches on a regular basis). He sees that a classmate Rory could die and he wants to figure out how it is going to happen.

I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer #1. Written by Doug Wagner and art by Daniel Hillyard. Cover art (Both cover A & B) by Daniel Hillyard and Michelle Madsen. Rennie has been accepted to the New York Fashion and Design Institute. She was after a certain thing, but it was not necessarily the reason one would expect. She is a serial killer. Look out, Sofie. I had to grab the cover B version along with the cover A because I loved the B, but I wanted A too.

We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us #1. Written by Matthew Rosenberg and art and cover art by Stefano Landini. A brand new story that, when broken down, is really the story of a father and his daughter. Admittedly, there are more levels to this new Image book than that. This first issue was compelling though. We’ll see where it goes.

West Coast Avengers #6. Written by Gerry Conway and art by Ton Lima. Cover art was done by Ben Harvey. We get some Avengers on Avengers violence in this issue as some members of the Avengers face off with the West Coast Avengers over the potential dangers of Ultron. I have enjoyed this series so far.

X-Men #14. Written by Jed MacKay and penciled by Ryan Stegman. Variant cover D art by Woo Chul Lee. Piper, the young girl of the mutant-hating mother, was told that she was not a mutant and turned away by the X-Men. She has disappeared into the wilderness of Alaska and there was definitely something about the girl.

Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #1. Dialogue by Charles Soule and art and cover art by Steve McNiven (Gold Medalist). I typical am not a fan of the possible future stories like this one. Throw that out the window. I loved this book. It might be the best book of the week. The future version of Matt Murdock is awesome and I loved everything about this series. Charles Soule is a great writer and you can see his skill here. Three issue series and it started tremendously.

Juvenile #5. Written, art and cover art by Jesus Orellana. This was the final issue of this Image series. I have enjoyed this book considerably. It has a Stranger Things meet X-Men feel to it and I think the book is set up to continue at some time in the future. Great stuff.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #32. “God War Part 1” Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Marco Renna. Federico Vicentini & Neeraj Menon did the cover art. Miles finds himself in the middle of a bunch of Gods, from Thor, Hercules, Anansi to Ares. Miles has to be considered a big gun at this point.

Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #7. “Pool Party” written by Jed MacKay and art by Domenico Carbone. Cover art by Davide Paratore (Silver Medalist). Moon Knight has a plan to attempt to draw out Hank Pym. The plan involved Pym’s daughter, Nadia. There is a lot of connections between Moon Knight and Hank Pym that they can mine for goodness here. I love when they use the characters’ background.

Absolute Superman #6. “Son of Smallville” Written by Jason Aaron and art by Carmine Di Giandomenico. Cover art was done by Rafa Sandoval & Ulises Arreola. We get the back story of what happened when an older Kal-El, more teenage than baby, arrived in Kansas with Jonathan and Martha Kent. It was a little different than what we were used to.

Let This One Be A Devil #2. Script by James Tynion IV & Steve Foxe and art by Piotr Kowalski. Gavin Fullerton did the cover art. This “True Weird Story” continues with a look at the mysterious Leeds Devil. This reminds me of a horror version of Blue Book, a series from Dark Horse penned by Tynion IV. This has some scary moments inside that really work with his style.

Immortal Thor #22. “The Edge” Written by Al Ewing and art by Jan Bazaldua. Alex Ross did the cover art. Thor and Skurge are joined by Hermod in their quest that may be leading to a major event in this series.

Those Not Afraid #3. Script by Kyle Starks and art by Patrick Piazzalunga. Cover art was done by Glenn Fabry. Turned out that out two serial killers, competing with each other for most kills, were able to squirm their way out of trouble from last issue.

Hyde Street #5. Written by Geoff Johns and art by Francis Portela. Cover art by Ivan Reis, Danny Miki with Brad Anderson. Miss Glee Goodbody is our focus this issue of Hyde Street. She was a horrendous woman. Very unlikable. Hyde Street still has that Twilight Zone feel to it and it delivers a strong story each issue.

The Lucky Devils #3. Written by Charles Soule and art and cover art by Ryan Browne. Charles Soule seems to be very busy lately with a bunch of Marvel books and this one that definitely has that Eight Billion Genies vibe to it. No genies, but demons from Hell instead. This continues to be a fun title with some of the more creative ideas you are going to find.

Pop Kill #2. Story by Jimmy Palmiotti & Dave Johnson and art by Juan Santacruz. Variant cover B art by ark Chiarello. What happens when you get James Bond fighting villainous agents over a pop formula? You get Pop Kill. Another new Mad Cave book that has a lot going for it. I love this cool variant cover too. Probably could have competed for the medal if I had gotten it earlier in the week.

Darkwing Duck #2. Written by Daniel Kibblesmith and art by Ted Brandt & Ro Stein. Cover art was done by Tad Stones. This issue of the Disney character Darkwing Duck featured Gosalyn and her school play. She is manipulated by a super villain posing as her substitute teacher. Ah, if I had a nickel for every substitute teacher who was truly a super villain.

Plague House #1. Written by Michael W. Conrad and illustrated and cover art by Dave Chisholm. Another good new independent book, but this time it is from Oni Press. An online ghost hunter group, looking to debunk the false houses, go into a house where it is anything but fake. There are some very dramatic moments in this issue.

Concert of Champions #1. Written by Jason Loo and art by Rafael Loureiro & Ruairi Coleman. Cover art was done by Javier Garrón & Romulo Fajardo Jr. Dazzler, Luna Snow and Lil Cheney are putting on a concert. That means there will be trouble coming. Here in the form of a super villain heavy metal band. Hmm.

Hello Darkness #9. Variant Cover art by Jenny Frison. Once again, there is a group of intriguing horror/thriller stories inside this anthology series. “Teacher’s Pet” from Cullen Bunn is probably my favorite of the issue. That has some personal connection as a teacher.

Psylocke #6. “House of Ghosts.” Written by Alyssa King and art by Vincenzo Carratù and Moises Hidalgo. Mahmud Asrar & Matthew Wilson did the cover art. What is happening to Kwannon? And can a trip to see the Uncanny X-Men, in particular Deathdream, help out. Will Rogue think it is a good idea? More conflict between the two X-teams.

Absolute Green Lantern #1. “The Black Hand.” Written by Al Ewing and art and cover art by Jahnoy Lindsay. Al Ewing is everywhere these days. How many books is this guy writing in a month? He hits another home run with this new version of Green Lantern. I love the way he weaves these other Lanterns into this story. Another strong Absolute DC book.

Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma #1. “This Body Holding Me.” Written by Ram V and art by Anand RK and Jackson “Butch” Guice. Jeff Dèkal did the cover art. This is a solid book from DC Comics’ Black Label. I did not know this character before, though Todd said he used to love him. I am intrigued by what I read here and, with a grumble, will pick up yet another DC book.

Hornsby & Halo #5. Storytellers are Peter J. Tomasi & Peter Snejbjerg. Zach and Rose are reeling from the things that have been happening to them so far, but this issue takes that to another step. Pinch each other to see if they are dreaming.

The Atom Project #4. “Catalyst.” Written by Ryan Parrott and John Ridley and art by Mike Perkins. Variant cover B art by Mark Spears (Bronze Medalist). Captain Atom vs. Zmeck. The Atom Project has been a solid series so far, and I believe it is coming to an end soon. It shows that you can have a good series with any characters as long as there is good writing.

Deadpool #13. Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Rogê Antônio. Taurin Clarke did the cover art. Deadpool and Daughters are on the path to find Death Grip. On the path, they must fight Solem, he with the adamantium skin. If you haven’t had enough of them together yet, Wolverine makes a cameo with Deadpool.

Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe One Last Time #1. Written by Cullen Bunn and art by Dalibor Talajic. Cover is the April Pool’s Day Variant cover with all white. Remember when I mentioned earlier about how I usually did not like possible future stories but I loved the new Daredevil one? This is an example of the other way around. I did not care for this at all and liked it even less when I learned it was more than just a one shot.

Two-Face #5. “Roll the Dice and Die!” Written by Christian Ward and art by Fabio Veras. Cover art was done by Baldemar Rivas. Two-Face’s daughter? Die. Rolls her way into this issue, trying to find her father. This penultimate issue of the book sets up the next issue with Batman.

Olympians: Hades-Lord of the Dead Graphic Novel. Created by George O’Connor. I picked this up off of Amazon this week because my 8th grade class will be reading an excerpt from this graphic novel out of their HMH curriculum this coming week and I wanted to see the whole thing. I did the same thing with Monster: A Graphic Novel by Walter Dean Myers. I do like how this program includes some graphic novels in their units.

Other books this week: Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur 10th Anniversary Special #1, The Terminator #6, Red Before Black #5, Ironheart: Bad Chemistry #1, Rivals #1, Secret Six #2, Money Shot: Big Bang #0, Ripperland #3, Sam and Twitch Case Files #12, and Ultimate X-Men.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #146

March 29

Good evening from EYG. It is time to go through the ton of books from this week. It was a large week of books and, while I did not get every one of them, there are a bunch of books for the week.

Jumping right in with this week’s books:

Big Burn #3. Written by Joe Henderson and art and cover art by Lee Garbett. I have been waiting for this book for what seems like months. In fact, according to my CLZ app, Big Burn #2 came out on Nov. 13, 2024. So literal months. These long release times do make it more difficult to read these DSTLRY books, but they are always so great that you have to put up with it. Big Burn may be my favorite DSTLRY series so far.

Absolute Wonder Woman #6. “The Lady or the Tiger“. Written by Kelly Thompson and art by Mattia De Iulis. Cover art was done by Hayden Sherman & Jordie Bellaire (Gold Medalist). Diana is in the Underworld facing Hades. She tells of her time meeting Prometheus among others. I do like centering Wonder Woman with the Greek Myths and this was an entertaining issue.

Dust to Dust #4. Written by JG Jones & Phil Bram and art and cover art by JG Jones. This issue gives us more details about the past of the Sheriff and the big secret that shamed him from his past. We also get a glance at the man in the gas mask, who adorns the cover of this issue.

Uncanny X-Men #12. “Some Kinda Way.” Witten by Gail Simone and art by Gavin Guidry. David Marquez & Matthew Wilson did the cover art. We get a story from the past of everyone’s favorite Cajun, Remy LeBeau. It is a tale that comes back to the current day in the form of a man named The Vig. Gambit has been a major character for Marvel over the last year or so.

Weapon X-Men #2. “Tsunami.” Written by Joe Casey and penciled by Chriscross. Cover art by Chriscross & Fer Sifuentes-Sujo. I think there were too many Wolverine & Deadpool crossovers this week. This is yet another one where Wade betrayed Logan… or did he? Baron Strucker is around too. This was the best of the Wolvie-Deadpool team ups this week (which is setting the bar low).

Far Down Below #1. Written by Chris Condon and art by Gegê Schall. Cover art was by Jacob Phillips. Brand new book from Mad Cave this week and I loved it. This felt like a mix of Journey to the Center of the Earth and The Goonies. I am here for it. I have to say that it sure feels as if Mad Cave has been on fire lately. I loved Chris Condon’s work in That Texas Blood too and this kick off issue hit on all cylinders.

You’ll Do Bad Things #1. Story by Tyler Boss and art by Adriano Turtulici. Cover art was done by Tyler Boss. Bad “Things,” not bad “Thongs!” It’s an inside joke. Another good first issue this week, this time from Image Comics. There is some connection between a writer and a serial killer. Either way, the writer is tired of true crime, particularly when the true crime is the murders of children.

The Exorcism at 1600 Penn #4. Written by Hannah Rose May and art and cover art by Vanesa Del Rey. This four issue series that saw the President of the United States’ daughter possessed by a demon, came to a satisfying conclusion here. This has been one of the better short series from the independent comics. It was a comic that grabbed my attention via its cover and kept my attention because of its story.

X-Manhunt Omega #1. “Dreams End.” Written by Murewa Ayodele & Gail Simone with art by Gleb Melnikov, Federica Mancin & Enid Balan. Cover art was done by Gleb Melnikov & Morry Hollowell. The final part of the seven part X-Manhunt storyline that ran across the X-Men family books this past month ends with this issue as Professor X and his reborn love Lilandra seem to leave earth for the final time. The X-Men come together for a goodbye.

Metamorpho #4. “The HQ That Walked Like a Man!” Written by Al Ewing and art by Steve Lieber. Lieber and Lee Loughridge did the cover art. Metamorpho fights a building. I did not mistype that. He fights a building. Oh, and the files that Simon Stagg has on Metamorpho comes straight from the Who’s Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe book. That was both cool and fourth wall breaking for me.

Standstill #8. Story by Lee Loughridge and art by Alex Riegel. Cover art was done by Andrew Robinson. Standstill closes up with a dramatic final struggle over the watch that freezes time. This was chocked full of action and the imagery of the art fit with it extremely well. It left off on quite a cliffhanger too leading one to believe that there may be more Standstill down the road.

Fantastic Four #30. “Rock Bottom.” Written by Ryan North and penciled by Cory Smith. Joshua Cassara & Dean White did the cover art. This “One World Under Doom” crossover sees Ben Grimm struggling after Doctor Doom “cured” him of his rock form. How does the Puppet Master play into this story?

Justice League Unlimited #5. Written by Mark Waid and art by Dan Mora. Cover art was done by Dan Mora. Impulse is at the heart of this story as he seems to be getting in the way more than helping. We also see the reforming of the Legion of Doom… and I don’t mean Road Warrior Hawk and Road Warrior Animal. JLU begins a three month crossover event with World’s Finest. Now I have to buy another DC book. *GRUMBLE*

Ultimate Wolverine #3. Written by Chris Condon and art by Alessandro Cappuccio. Cover art by Alessandro Cappuccio and Frank Martin. We get the debuts of Ultimate versions of Gambit and Kitty Pryde this issue. Another book written by Chris Condon that is excellent. He has worked his way into one of my favorite writers around.

Infinity Watch #3. Written by Derek Landy and art by Enid Balám. Cover art was done by Salvador Larroca & GURU-eFX. The Infinity Watch members are all dead. But why are they in different forms? Wild stuff in this issue as the Infinity stones saga continues.

The Kids #1. Written by Garth Ennis and art and cover art by Dalibor Talajic (Silver Medalist). A one-shot story from Image Comics’ Ninth Circle imprint. I really enjoyed this story. What do you do when all of the infants and children are immediately transformed into adults? It was an extremely creative take on the “zombie” idea, but with angry, scared and hungry adults with the brains of babies. My biggest disappointment was this was a one shot. I would have bought into more of this.

Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four #1. Written by Ryan North and art by John Romita Jr. Cover art was done by Adam Kubert & Morry Hollowell. This is the first of the Marvel Universe characters face off with Godzilla books that are coming this month. Of course, Godzilla ends up with the Power Cosmic from the Silver Surfer because why shouldn’t he?

Daredevil #19. “Introductory Rites” Conclusion. Written by Saladin Ahmed and art by Aaron Kuder. John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna and Richard Isanove did the cover art. The final demon from Hell forced Daredevil to make a choice… save Foggy or save Bullseye. Hmm… not sure if this is a true conflict.

Ultimate Spider-Man #15. Written by Jonathan Hickman and guest artist David Messina. Cover art was done by Marco Checchetto. Peter is having trouble with the loss of his friend Harry. Nothing a little father son super hero training couldn’t help. Plus, Ultimate Sandman makes his first appearance.

Gold Key Select Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery #1. Gold Key is trying to cash in on the nostalgia bug that has grasped pop culture these days with reprints of the 1962 Boris Karloff Thriller comics. I usually do not go for reprints like this, but I do have a good place in my heart for Boris Karloff from my childhood of watching those Universal Monsters movies and I am happy I have this.

Amazing Spider-Man #70. “Nothing Can Stop the Spider-Naut.” Written by Joe Kelly and penciled by Ed McGuinness. Ed McGuinness, Cliff Rathburn & Marcio Menyz did the cover art. This is the final issue of this volume of Amazing Spider-Man. This volume was highlighted by Peter Parker being transformed into creatures. We had Spider-Goblin for awhile. Now we have Spider-Naut… where Peter has the Juggernaut power. I have not been a big fan of this “The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man” arc, but I feel as if it finished up strong.

The Department of Truth #29. Written by James Tynion IV and art and cover art by Martin Simmonds. This book continues to be the top of the game of the conspiracy theories. I love the creative use of this wild storytelling even if it can be challenging to follow at times. I enjoy a book that demands that I am smart enough to read it.

Feral #11. Written by Tony Fleecs and art by Trish Forstner. I picked up two copies of this this week, the first one with the cover art by Tony Fleecs & Tone Rodriguez and the variant cover art by Trish Forstner & Allen Passalaqua (Gold Medalist). Feral has been a suspenseful book every month and who thought that a bunch of cats could be this compelling?

Doll Parts: A Lovesick Tale #4. Written, illustrated and cover art by Luana Vecchio. This prequel series came to a close with a dramatic character piece. Madeline went through all kinds of physical and mental issues. I did not know this was a prequel, leading into the Lovesick series.

Absolute Martian Manhunter #1. Written by Deniz Camp and art and cover art by Javier Rodriguez. This book is colorful, creative, and extremely original. This was something different and I did like this.

The Last Boy #1. Written by Dan Panosian and illustrated by Alessio Avallone. Cover art was done by Dan Panosian. Peter Pan. Captain Hook. Wendy. They are all here, but maybe not as you remember them. This Boom! Studio book is an interesting one.

Black Canary: Best of the Best #5. “Round Five” Written by Tom King and art and cover art by Ryan Sook. I have loved this Black Canary series so far as the penultimate issue was epic. This book is not only the amazing contest between Canary and Lady Shiva, but a character piece involving Canary and her mother. Tom King is another of my favorite writers.

Universal Monsters: The Mummy #1. Written and art by Faith Erin Hicks. The cover art was by Faith Eric Hicks & Lee Loughridge (Bronze Medalist). I have enjoyed this series of Universal Monsters books and the Mummy is next. This is a great start and I am looking forward to the rest of the issues.

Doom Academy #2. Written by Mackenzie Cadenhead and art by Pasqual Ferry & Joao M.P. Lemos. Variant cover art by Ron Lim & Israel Silva. This variant cover of Doyle Dormammu was very nearly a medalist this week. I do love these Strange Academy characters and placing them in the middle of this One World Under Doom storyline is a smart move.

Rogue The Savage Land #3. Written by Tim Seeley and art by Zulema Scotto Lavina. Kaare Andrews did the cover art. I have never loved these stories that fall into past moments of the Marvel Universe. This one has been fine because I do like the characters, especially Ka-Zar.

Laura Kinney: Wolverine #4. “Brother in Arms- Part 1” Written by Erica Schultz and art by Giada Belviso. Cover art was done by Elena Casagrande & Edgar Delgado. Laura Kinney and Bucky Barnes team up in this issue as these two characters have seemingly a lot in common.

Red Hulk #2. “The Great Escape.” Written by Benjamin Percy and art by Geoff Shaw. Variant cover art was done by Greg Land & Rachelle Rosenberg. Thunderbolt Ross was spent with the Red Hulk, so he had team up with Machine Man, Deathlok, and Simon Ryker to escape from the Doombots and the prison they were being held in.

Incredible Hulk #23. “The Skin of Charlie Tidwell” Part Two. Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and art and cover art by Nic Klein. This is a creepy episode as the winged monster is wearing Charlie’s skin. Sentence you would never expect the Hulk to say: “Take off the skin now.”

Kill Train #3. Written by Olivia Cuartero-Briggs and art by Martina Niosi of Outclass Studio. Skylar Patridge did the cover art. Another really solid book from Mad Cave. Kill Train has been brutal and bloody and a real good time.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #4. Written by Christos Gage and art by Eric Gapstur. Cover art was by Leonardo Romero (Bronze Medalist). The prequel series to the animated TV show gets, I believe, its penultimate issue with Spidey taking on Silvermane and the Enforcers. Peter is in bad shape at the end of the issue.

The Seasons #3. Written by Rick Remender and art and cover art by Paul Azaceta. Summer has been having all kinds of trouble and her sister Winter has had about all she can take. However, there is absolutely something going on and Summer is the one calling it out.

The Patchwork Girl of Oz #3. Adapted, illustrated and cover art by Otis Frampton. Adapted from the novel by L. Frank Baum. The Patchwork Girl is brought to life but her “brain” had way more than what was intended. The wild moment lead to a tragedy for Unc. Nunkie.

Pooluminati #1 and Deadpool vs. Wolverine: Slash ‘Em Up #1. I mentioned earlier about Deadpool and Wolverine and these two books have a lot of those two characters in it. Neither of these were that good. It just felt like I was overwhelmed by the amount of Deadpool and the amount of Deadpool with Wolverine.

Other books this week: Peacemaker Presents Vigilante/Eagly Double Feature #1, Thunderbolts: Doomstrike #2, Doom’s Division #1, Vampirella #1 (Silver Medalist), Nights #14, Sherlock Holmes The Dark Detective: Claws of the Chimera #4, and Free for All #1.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #145

March 24

On Saturday, I took a trip to In This Issue Comics in Bettendorf. I do like this little shop because it has such a variety of independent books. There are some books that I picked up there that I had not ever seen before. There was one company called BQ Comics.

Because of timing, and the fact that next week’s haul at Comic World is going to be massive, I wanted to include these new independent books in an EYG Comic Cavalcade. There may be an eBay or two in here too…

Books this issue:

Crush Depth #1. Written by David “DB” Andry and Tim Daniel and art and cover art by Alex Sanchez. This was the book that inspired the trip to Bettendorf as I was intrigued by the concept of this comic. And this was one of the best books I picked up this week, including the books from EYG Comic Cavalcade#144. Engaging and entertaining action in a sub beneath the water with bizarre things happening. Mad Cave has a winner here.

Who are the Power Pals #1. Written by Duane Murray and art and cover art by Ahmed Raafat. A couple of washed up actors who had a very short lived TV show Called the Power Pals are trying to reclaim old glory. This Dark Horse book was more entertaining than I thought it was going to be.

LA Strong #1. This Mad Cave book was another book that I was not aware of. It is a charity comic for victims of the Los Angeles fires and it featured a who’s who of writers and artists. Each of them received a page or two and most of the book is not about storytelling as much as it is to speak some truth. Then some of the art in this book is breathtaking. It is a beautiful book.

Space Ghost #11. Written by David Pepose and art by Jonathan Lau. Francesco Mattina did the cover art. The copies delivered to Comic World of Space Ghost #11 were damaged and so I picked up this copy in Bettendorf to make sure that I could get it. Space Ghost is having all kinds of trouble with a whole bunch of his villains and a conflict with him and the kids.

Pop Kill #1. Written by Jimmy Palmiotti & Dave Johnson with art by Juan Santacruz. Variant cover D (boobies version) by Brian Steelfreeze. This was one from eBay this week. I picked up the uncensored version of the cover. I did enjoy this book with a battle between soda pop companies. It was not just because of the cover.

Ultimate X-Men #13. Writer and artist: Peach Momoko. Foil variant cover by Benjamin Su. I had this comic last week, but the foil variant cover caught my attention. I tried to ignore it, but I could not just leave it on the shelf. The cover was a beautiful one, even if it is not by Peach Momoko.

Galavera P.I. #1-4. Written and drawn by Marco Finnegan. I picked up this full four-issue series this weekend and the guy who checked me out said that he loved this series. He was right. This was fabulous. A story of a detective who has come back from the dead to take care of something he left behind. I loved the character design and the story was well written.

The 27 Run Crash #1-2. Written by Justin Zimmerman and art by by Russell Brown. This was the book from the company that referred to in the beginning, BQ Comics. It is a futuristic apocalyptic story about a man and his mech.

DC x Sonic the Hedgehog #1. “Chaos Crisis Part One” Written by Ian Flynn and art by Adam Bryce Thomas. Cover art by Pablo M. Collar. I picked this up as a collectible. I flipped through it, but did not read it. It had a nice cover, but honestly, it was just to grab a number one.

Convert #1-2. Written by John Arcudi and art by Savannah Finley. Cover art by Simon Gane. This is a series from Image that I had not heard of before, but I did like this one. It reminded me a bit of the movie The Martian mixed with a more sci-fi element. This was an interesting story so far.

Dream Weaver #1. Written by Chris Ryall and illustrated by Nelson Daniel. This is listed as a GIANT SYZE SPECIAL. I’m not sure what this was. It felt like a story that was told about a character named Dream Weaver that debuted before. It felt like it needed more explanation on what was going on. I did like the presentation overall.

Remote Space #1-3. Written, drawn and cover art by Cliff Rathburn. Another weird and wild Image Comics series. There are some wonderful character design but there is so much exposition in this book that it is hard to read. Only one more issue in this series though and it is a beautiful artistic book.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #144

Boy, there was a big week of comics this week, but it is nothing compared to what is coming next week.

I picked up a bunch of comics at Comic World and via eBay, as well as some purchased for me by Todd in Des Moines. I picked up a bunch of independents today at In This Issue Comics in Bettendorf that will not be included in this edition of EYG Comic Cavalcade. Depending on how much reading I get completed, I made do another issue of EYG CC before NEW COMIC BOOK DAY this Wednesday. That is a wait and see…

Next week, as I was going over Midtown Comics list, could have as many as 50 new books. That is an insane number. Probably will have to split into two EYG CC’s next week for sure.

Meanwhile, I have quite the potpourri of comic books this week. Todd calls some of the books that I pick up “unique.” It is tough when you are a trendsetter, like me.

This week’s “unique” books and others:

20 Degrees Past Rigor #1-3. Written by Rodney Barnes and drawn by Maan House. I have had issues #2 and #3 for awhile now, but I was missing #1, so they have been sitting in a pile waiting. I went to eBay to look at the book and it was rare and expensive so I put it off for some time. I finally ordered it and it arrived this week. This was just a three issue series from Zombie Love Studios and it was fun. I learned that the title was when the dead bodies started turning into zombies… twenty degree past when the body would become rigor.

X-Force #9. “The Shapley Value.” Written by Geoffrey Thorne and art by Marcus To. Stephen Segovia & Rain Beredo did the cover art. This is chapter six of the X-Manhunt, and we get the resurrection of Lilandra. This being the reason Charles Xavier has been running around free the last several chapters.

Dark Pyramid #1. Written by Paul Tobin and art and cover art by PJ Holden. This is a new series from Mad Cave that I could not find at any of the local shops and I have to grab via eBay. A podcaster goes missing during a recording session after entering a cave on Mt. Denau in Alaska. His girlfriend Becca heads to the mountain to try and find him. Intriguing mystery in this new book. Looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #31. “Pools of Blood Part Four” Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Luigi Zagaria. Federico Vicentini and Ceci De La Cruz did the cover art. Miles and Deadpool’s team up comes to an end with this issue and we get a cameo at the end of the book showing us where Miles is heading next… Hercules?

Exceptional X-Men #7. Written by Eve L. Ewing and art by Carmen Carnero. Carmen Carnero and Nolan Woodard did the cover art. Part of the X-Manhunt saga, but not a numbered chapter. This was listed as Collateral Damage and is barely connected. It is more about Axo discovering his new friend and mentor is actually Mister Sinister. Tough reveal for Axo.

The Deviant #9. Written by James Tynion IV and art and cover art by Joshua Hixson (Silver Medalist). The series comes to a dramatic conclusion after a long wait. Issue nine has been long time coming and it does not disappoint.

Absolute Batman #6. Written by Scott Snyder and art by Nick Dragotta. Cover art was done by Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin. Batman punts a young kid off a boat. It was one of the best things I have ever seen. Oh… and Absolute Joker makes his first appearance.

TVA #4. Written by Katharyn Blair and art by Pere Perez. Cover art was done by Pere Perez and GURU-eFX. I really like this mixture of the characters from Loki Disney + series and Marvel. Seeing Spider-Gwen, Captain Carter and a variant of Gambit working with B-15 and Mobius is a good time.

Saga #72. Written by Brian K. Vaughn and art and cover art by Fiona Staples (Gold Medalist). The weird and wild adventures of Hazel continue with the newest episode of the Saga. There is such a developed storyline here that it feels as if anything could happen, but I am confident that Vaughn and Staples knows exactly where they are headed. Saga is one of the best reads every month.

Avengers #24. “The Casino Job” Part 3. Written by Jed MacKay and art by Farid Karami. Valerio Schiti and Federico Blee did the art for the cover. Kang shows his treacherous side and Black Cat questions the side she is on. The Avengers then return to earth in time to discover that Dr. Doom is in control.

Absolute Flash #1. “Of Two Worlds Part One.” Written by Jeff Lemire and art and cover art by Nick Robles. I love Jeff Lemire and I have always liked the character of Flash, so this is a nice combination for me in the new “ABSOLUTE” books from DC. Wally West is our main protagonist and it sure does not seem as if Barry Allen has much of a future in this book. Good stuff so far.

One World Under Doom #2.The Free World.” Written by Ryan North and art by R.B. Silva. Variant cover art by R.B. Silva. Victor Von Doom is showing off his new power to Valeria Richards and uses his power to “un-rock” Ben Grimm. Thing no more? We’ve seen this happen several times so I do not expect this to be a long term development… especially with the Fantastic Four movie coming out from Marvel Studios in July.

West Coast Avengers #5. Written by Gerry Duggan and art by Danny Kim. Ben Harvey did the cover art. Finally caught up with the West Coast Avengers after missing an issue awhile ago and then not getting this one on time. I do like this roster of characters so far, but with Firestar off for rehab, I would like to see someone new.

Out of Alcatraz #1. “Modesto.” Written by Christopher Cantwell and art and cover art by Tyler Crook (Bronze Medalist). This is a piece of historical fiction combined with a what if. This follows two of the prisoners who tried to escape from Alcatraz. It was believed that the escapees had drowned in their escape attempt, but in this new book from Oni Press, Christopher Cantwell tells the story of two of them surviving and what happened to them after. I enjoyed this quite a bit too.

Return of the Living Dead #2. Written by S.A. Check and James Kuhoric and art by Andrea Arcari. Cover art by Mark Spears. Another book that came to me from eBay this week. It is yet another book that has provided us with zombie action. Plus an awesome Mark Spears cover.

Those Not Afraid #2. Written by Kyle Starks and art by Patrick Piazzalunga. Cover art was done by Glenn Fabry. Our serial killer competition is in full swing, but will it be derailed when the Headless Whores Man is arrested and the Home Intruder sprung a trap. Only two issues in and it seems like we are at the end. I suppose there is more coming from our mysterious killers.

You Never Heard of Me #2. Written by Iolanda Zanfardino and illustrated by Elisa Romboli. Will uses his new power that he gained from his grandma to help save a classmate from making a fatal mistake… and perhaps gains a new helper.

Eddie Brock: Carnage #2. Written by Charles Soule and art by Jesus Saiz. Iban Coello & Frank D’Armata did the cover art. Above all else, I was distracted in this issue because they kept talking about Oceanic Airliner Flight 814 crashing, and it was taking me back to Oceanic Flight 815 from LOST. Clearly that is an homage to my favorite show ever. Oh, and Carnage and Eddie tangle with Bushwacker.

New Champions #3. Written by Steve Foxe and art by Ivan Fiorelli. Cover art was done by Todd Nauck & Rachelle Rosenberg. The New Champions vs. the Champions! Manipulated by Psycho Man, the two teams, who should be the best of friends, fight each other. Are the Champions even a thing any more?

Bug Wars #2. “Ain’t No God in Swarm City.” Written by Jason Aaron and drawn by Mahmud Asrar. Cover art was done by Mahmud Asrar & Matthew Wilson. Bug Wars has been a cool read so far. Slade Slaymaker shrinks down and is in the fight of his bug-lovin’ life… in the grass outside his own house. One of the more creative books out this month.

Assorted Crisis Events #1. Written by Deniz Camp and art by Eric Zawadzki. Variant cover art B by Stipan Morian. This was a wild book. Playing with time is always a mind-f and this one is taking all of that to a brand new level. This is one of those unique books that truly is different than most books on the market.

The Hive #1 & 2. Written by AJ Lieberman and art by Mike Henderson. Another one I have been waiting for. I ordered this off eBay on Feb. 17, and I had not noticed that the seller listed the delivery time as a month + later. I was so tired of waiting for issue #1 that I ordered it from another eBay seller. Ironically, both copies of #1 arrived on the same day. I’m not giving any feedback for that first seller, nor will I buy from him again. Series is intriguing though.

G.I. Joe #5. Written by Joshua Williamson and art and cover art by Tom Reilly. Duke and his Joes are captured and tortured for info, but that is no problem. Meanwhile, Cobra Commander is planning a bomb to turn everyone in the radius of the bomb into mindless slaves to Cobra.

Challengers of the Unknown #4. “Red & Green.” Written by Christopher Cantwell and art by Sean Izaakse and Amancry Nahuelpan. Cover art was done by Izaakse & Romulo Fajardo Jr. Red leads a mission with Green Lantern and Captain Comet, leading to Red’s becoming paralyzed. There is a big time mystery surrounding the Challengers and the Omega Power and the JLU is getting a little nervous.

Deadpool/Wolverine #3. “Recruits.” Written by Benjamin Percy and art by Joshua Cassara. Joshua Cassara and GURU eFX did the cover art. Deadpool is under the control of a villain and he and Wolverine go at it… I mean, violently. Much more violence in this book than any of the Red Band books that have been polybagged.

Sabretooth: The Dead Don’t Talk #3-4. Written by Frank Tieri and art by Michael Sta. Maria. I missed issue 3 of this series so I had to wait on it too. I have to say that these two issues were way better than the first two issues. I was fully engaged with this story and I was upset over the unexpected death that occurred.

Potions Inc #1-2. Written by Erik Burnham and art by Stelladia. I picked these up on eBay, but honestly, I do not remember why. And I did not like these issues at all. I was just not interested in the story and I had trouble keeping my attention. There are three more issues in this mini series, but I do not plan on pursuing them further.

Magik #3. “Pacts” Written by Ashley Allen and art by German Peralta. Variant cover art B was done by Jenny Frison. Illyana makes a deal with Liminal that could see her rid herself of the Darkchilde for good. Will Dani Moonstar help her accomplish this?

Werewolf by Night: Red Band #8. Written by Jason Loo and penciled by Sergio Davila. E.M. Gist did the cover art. Jack Russell has become a ghost wolf while Elsa Bloodstone is trying to compile a team to come rescue him. Is it too little too late? And will Reptil be allowed to join them?

Daredevil: Unleash Hell Red Band #3. Written by Erica Schultz and penciled by Valentina Pinti and Jose Luis Soares. Variant cover C art by Peach Momoko. Things go poorly for Daredevil (Elektra) against the possessing spirit of Muse. I guess the next stage of the battle will be in literal Hell.

Question: All Along the Watchtower #5. “Into the Breach.” Written by Alex Segura with art by Cian Tormey & Raul Fernandez. Tormey & Romulo Fajardo Jr did the cover art. Renee breaks Batwoman out of Cyborg Superman’s control, but things really look bad for our heroes. The original Question makes an appearance (okay, maybe not the original one, I admit I do not know the history of the character. It just is not Renee).

The Rocketfellers #4. Written by Peter J. Tomasi and art and cover art by Francis Manapul. The Rocketfellers are continuing to hide out in the 21 Century while displaying skills that they have. The Rocketfellers are an interesting read but it can be difficult to follow at times. I just do not know the characters well enough yet.

Other books this week: Psylocke #5, Lawful #8, When I Lay My Vengeance Upon Thee #3, Sam Wilson: Captain America #3, SilverHawks #2, Zatanna #2, Blood Squad Seven #7, The New Gods #4, Mine is a Long, Lonesome Grave #2, Ultimate X-Men #13, Ultimate Black Panther #14, and The Power Fantasy #7.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #143

March 15

We are just a couple of days from St. Patrick’s Day, so here is an early greeting for everyone to have fun and stay safe.

I finally picked up 20 Degrees Past Rigor #1 off eBay this week, but I have not yet read it. I had issues #2 and #3 already and I was waiting on #1, but it was a hard book to track down. I finally broke down and dropped some $ on eBay to get the book to me. We’ll see if it is worth the time.

Here are the other books this week:

X-Men #13. “Gods and Monsters” Written by Jed MacKay and penciled by Netho Diaz. Cover art was done by Ryan Stegman & Marte Gracia. The X-Manhunt storyline continues as the X-Men battle a mind controlled Storm in an attempt to get Charles Xavier back in custody.

Redcoat #10. Creators are Geoff Johns and Bryan Hitch. Hitch and Brad Anderson did the cover art. Simon Pure’s travels bring him into a meeting with Annie Oakley. The trick shot artist and the Redcoat put on a display of shooting and then need to help some people in trouble. Simon revealed some of his deep-seeded doubts to Annie.

All-New Venom #4. Written by Al Ewing and art by Carlos Gomez. Adam Kubert & Laura Martin did the cover art. Well, Rick Jones was revealed this issue to be the Sleeper Agent, seemingly eliminating him from the possible suspect list for the All-New Venom. With Madame Masque in this issue fighting against Venom, does this mean that Robbie Robertson is the one remaining possibility or does Marvel have a swerve coming? We are supposed to find out next issue.

West Coast Avengers #3-4. Written by Gerry Duggan and art by Danny Kim. I missed these two issues so I had to get caught up. I got one on eBay and the other was backordered at Comic World for me. Ironically enough, I missed West Coast Avengers #5 that was released this week. It’s coming next week for me (Thanks Todd).

Darkwing Duck #1. Written by Daniel Kibblesmith and drawn by Ted Brandt and Ro Stein. Variant cover B art was done by Mark Bagley (Bronze Medalist). I saw an interview with Daniel Kibblesmith a few months ago on YouTube talking about this project and it intrigued me. I like Kibblesmith and I think Dynamite has been doing some excellent books of late so I wanted to give this a try. I enjoyed the book for the most part.

Amazing Spider-Man #69. “Acceptable Losses.” Written by Joe Kelly and penciled by Ed McGuinness. Cover art was done by McGuinness, Cliff Rathburn & Marcio Menyz. Peter Parker is back among the living thanks to Cyra’s change of heart. She helped him turn into the Spider-Juggernaut???? One more issue of this volume before a reboot for Amazing Spider-Man.

How I Became a Shoplifter #1. Written by Tom Breyfogle and art by Daniel Hillyard. I picked up issues #2, 3 of this in the bag sale last weekend, so I ordered issue one on eBay. I received a notice form eBay that the issues (I got all three versions of issue #1’s cover) had been delivered, but they were nowhere to be found at my house. I checked the tracking and it said that it had been delivered to Manchester, CT. This was, of course, nowhere near my house in Iowa. I contacted the seller at eBay and he responded that sometimes they scan the address incorrectly and that I should be patient and give it a few days. He promised that he would make sure I got my order even if he had to resend the issues. A few days later, the package arrived at my doorstep. I was grateful for the communication by the eBay seller, ih8jocks1692.

Deadpool #12. “Pools of Blood.” Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Andrea DiVito. Taurin Clarke did the cover art. The Deadpool/Miles Morales team up/face off continued in this issue with Miles coming face to face with Princess.

X-Factor #8. “The Summers of Days Past.” Written by Mark Russell and art by Bob Quinn. Greg Land & Frank D’Armata did the cover art. The Legacy numbered 300 issue of X-Factor featured a battle between the X-Men and X-Factor over the custody of Charles Xavier. Xavier seems to be causing all kinds of trouble lately as X-Manhunt gives us chapter 5.

Power Man: Timeless #2. “No Time at All.” Written by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly and art by Bernard King. Ario Anindito did the cover art. Luke Cage and Aeon have a massive cosmic battle and Power Man shows off his Hulk-side. Oh and… hey there Apocalypse. How have you been?

Phoenix #9. Written by Stephanie Phillips and art by Alessandro Miracolo. Variant cover art was done by Todd Nauck & Rachelle Rosenberg. Newly powered up and new costumed Jean Grey as the Phoenix is in search of Adani. Nova and Rocket Raccoon guest star.

Absolute Superman #5. “Ad Astra Per Aspera.” Written by Jason Aaron and art by Rafa Sandoval. Sandoval and Ulises Arreola did the cover art (Gold Medalist). We see the flashback to the death of Krypton and how young (but not baby) Kal-El wound up on the earth.

Batman: Dark Patterns #4. “The Voice of the Tower Part 1” Written by Dan Watters with art and cover art by Hayden Sherman (Silver Medalist). This issue reminded me of the movie Dredd from 2012, except for the weird ending with the building looking to be alive. Not sure what this issue was. It was odd from the start.

Green Hornet Miss Fury #3. Written by Alex Segura and Henry Barajas with art by Federico Sorressa. Cover art was done by Francesco Francavilla. Silver Shrike is causing trouble and he has place Kato into all kinds of danger. This noir style book continues to be excellent.

In Hell We Fight #5. Written by John Layman and drawn by Jok. This was another book I picked up on eBay to complete a run of books I got in the bag sale last weekend. I enjoyed this book as it reminded me some of Hazmat Hotel.

Sister Imperator #1. Written by Corinna Bechko and art by Puste. Cover art was done by Mikael Eriksson. This is a series listed as from the world of Ghost, which I do not know what that is. However, this does seem to be the origin of the titular character and it was an interesting and tragic story. Dark Horse has been solid this last year or so.

Namor #8. “The Wrath and the Splendor.” Written by Jason Aaron and art by Paul Davidson & Alex Lins. Cover art was done by Alexander Lozano. The new Namor series wrapped up with Namor taking control of the throne of Atlantis only to make some major, sweeping changes to it. I have enjoyed this Jason Aaron penned series considerably and I would welcome more undersea adventures from him with Namor.

The Nine Lives of Salem #1. Written by Cullen Bunn and art was done by Dan Schoening and Ben Galvan. Cover art was Dan Schoening & Matt Herms. Salem the cat from Sabrina the Teenage Witch has his own one shot in the Archie Comics company. It was fun and fits right in with the other recent books with feline and/or canine lead characters.

Nick Fury vs. Fin Fang Foom #1. Written by J. Michael Straczynski and art by Elena Casagrande. Cover art was done by Gary Frank and Alex Sinclair. This was a pre-WWII story with Nick Fury attempting to clear the Chinese skies of the “cloud” that turned out to be the dragon Fin Fang Foom. These strange Marvel team ups have been fun and I like seeing Fin Fang Foom featured prominently.

Geiger #12. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Gary Frank. Gary Frank & Brad Anderson did the cover art. The Glowing Woman is trying to help out Geiger to control his powers. However, what is her true motivation? Not sure.

Hellhunters #4. Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and art by Adam Gorham. Declan Shalvey did the variant cover B. Zarathos provided a bit of a power boost for the Hellhunters. Logan, in particular, looks really cool with his horns and his flaming claws.

Iron Man #6. “The Insurgent Iron Man.” Written by Spencer Ackerman and drawn by Julius Ohta. Cover art was done by Yasmine Putri. Tony Stark is plotting to take down Doctor Doom… by supplying Doctor Doom with Stark weapons. Huh? This felt like a political thriller with the intrigue of spy action. I am not sure that things are going to go well for Tony.

Other books this week: The Moon is Following Us #7, Transformers #18, Void Rivals #17, Napalm Lullaby #9, and Warm Fusion #2.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #142

March 8

Big week here at EYG Comic Cavalcade. We had everything from weather to special sales to eBay orders. I have a bunch of books to enter into my CLZ app. I broke the 17,000 limit this week and, after today’s “fill-the-bag” sale at In This Issue Comics, I am nearly to 17,100.

I went to the comic shop In This Issue Comics in Bettendorf, which my friend James goes to for his Turtles books. There happened to be a special sale going on. It was a really nice little shop with terrible parking. It had a great variety of independents and variant covers. While I am always loyal to Comic World, In This Issue Comics was a nice shop that I might go back to some day, just to check it out. Certainly, I will go there before I go back to the other one in Davenport that I visited last month that made me think of an armpit.

Books this week:

What If…? Mickey and Friends Became Avengers #1. “The Coming of the Avengers.!” Plot by Steve Behling, script by Luca Barbieri and art by Alessandro Pastrovicchio. I started off with this because I got this cover A from Comic World, but picked up the Pluto variant at In This Issue Comics. This cool Pluto as Ant Man variant looks awesome and I just could not ignore it.

The Missionary #2. Written by Ryan Stegman and art and cover art by Jason Howard. This DSTLRY book continues with all kinds of demons and creatures battling their way through the pages. The character designs are really cool and well done. The imagery of the book works so well for these larger sized pages from DSTLRY.

Falling in Love on the Path to Hell #1-4. Story and art by Gerry Duggan & Garry Brown. I picked up these four issues of this ongoing Image book off eBay this week and I have #5,6 & 0 on the way in another order. I have enjoyed this series very much as we cross genres between Western and Samurais. It is a mystical story with two characters stranded on an island. Always reminds me of LOST. This has been very enjoyable so far.

Hornsby & Halo #3. Written by Peter J. Tomasi and art by Peter Snejbjerg. Peter Snejbjerg and John Kalisz did the art for the cover. I actually haven’t gotten this read yet, since it just arrived in the mail today from eBay. However, I had #4 last week and realized I was missing an issue. I am hoping to get to these two later tonight or sometime this weekend. They look cool.

Uncanny X-Men #11. “Echoes of Madness” Written by Gail Simone and art by Javier Garrón. Cover art was by David Marquez & Matthew Wilson. The big crossover “X-Manhunt” started in this issue with Chapter 1. Charles Xavier is out and about, back to causing trouble, even if he does not intend to.

NYX #9. “Charles.” Written by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly with art by Francesco Mortarino. Variant cover B art by Peach Momoko. This is Chapter 2 in the “X-Manhunt” crossover event as Charles makes his way to New York. Mojo is also here ready to bring his own brand of problems.

Storm #6. “Thundercloud.” Written by Murewa Ayodele and art by Luciano Vecchio. Cover art was done by Mateus Manhanini. Chapter 3 of the “X-Manhunt” happened in this issue. Storm faces off with the X-Men and she shows them that she is anything but a soft touch. Xavier came to Storm for help and boy does she give it. Poor Cyclops and Juggernaut.

The Spectacular Spider-Men #13. “Life and Limb.” Written by Greg Weisman and art by Emilio Laiso. Cover art was by Emilio Laiso and Edgar Delgado. The Lizard stopped the Electros from finishing off the Spider-Men, but the Lizard was still in a crazed form. So Peter and Miles had to face off with the reptile.

Juvenile #4. Written, illustrated and cover art by Jesus Orellana. Juvenile has been an excellent book so far and this penultimate issue of the series is not the exception. The kids get together and attempt an escape from the institution. I look forward to seeing what the end of this book will bring.

Doctor Strange of Asgard #1. Written by Derek Landy and art by Carlos Magno. Cover art was done by Geoff Shaw & Arthur Helsi (Gold Medalist). After losing his Sorcerer Supreme mantel for earth, Strange heads to Asgard to attempt to become the Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard. Thor says sure, but there are other obstacles for Strange to avoid. This is a cool new book featuring Dr. Strange while Doom is earth’s sorcerer supreme.

Jumpscare #1. Written by Cullen Dunn and art and cover art by Danny Luckert. This brand new Dark Horse book was a lot of fun. A new super hero is one the scene and she can summon weapons that she has seen from horror movies. Luckily, she is an aficionado of the genre. This is another cool, new Dark Horse book. I love the originality.

The Ultimates #10. Written by Deniz Camp and art by Juan Frigeri. Cover art was done by Dike Ruan & Neera J. Menon. It is always great fighting Nazis. We wind up with an unofficial Invaders reunion… though Namor has seen better days and our villain is a surprise (though I guessed it right away) identity.

The Terminator #5. “Gemini Rising.” Written and cover art by Declan Shalvey and art by Joe Mulvey. Action in outer space with astronauts and a Terminator. This Dynamite book has given us multiple locations for these robot battles and this one makes me think about the Alien franchise instead. Still cool though.

Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider #11. “Uncharted” Part 1. Written by Stephanie Phillips and art by Paolo Villanelli. Cover art was done by Mark Brooks. Some of the answers as to why Gwen had to leave her dimension and how she got tied up with the TVA come out in this issue, as King Loki guest stars.

Space Ghost #10. Written by David Pepose and art by Jonathan Lau. Variant cover C art was done by Bjorn Barends. Space Spectre arrives from the future with a mystery identity and a mission to prevent what is coming. Can Space Ghost stop someone so close to him?

Wolverine #7. “Ancient History.” Written by Saladin Ahmed and art by Martin Coccolo. Cover art was done by Martin Coccolo & Bryan Valenza. The mystery of the Adamantine rolls on as Wolverine goes one on one with Romulus. Things do not look good for our hero.

Spider-Boy #17. “Bug Brothers.” Written by Dan Slott and art by Nathan Stockman. Paco Medina and Edgar Delgado did the cover art. Spider-Boy and Boy-Spider try to co-exist now that Bailey is back from his overseas trip with Daredevil. It is weird but it seems as if every Spider character has a monstrous sidekick nowadays. Bailey has Boy-Spider, Miles has Shift and Peter has Rek-rap. Hmm.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7. “The Sewers of Newark.” Written by Jason Aaron and art by Juan Ferreyra. Variant cover B art by Kevin Eastman. A new story arc begins with this issue, but the Turtles are certainly not on the same page yet. However, perhaps Donatello is not as crazy as he seemed.

Kill Train #2. Written by Olivia Cuartero-Briggs and art by Martina Niosi of Outclass Studios. Skylar Patridge did the cover art (Bronze Medalist-tied) We get introductions to some of the other people on the Kill Train and they team together to try and keep themselves alive.

Pinupocalypse #1. Written, art and cover art by Andrew Tarusov. This was one of the independent books I picked off the shelf at In This Issue on Friday and I was surprised how much I loved the book. It reminded me a bit of Love Everlasting crossed with a zombie book. The book was from Massive Comics and I really loved it. Those unexpected treats are the best.

Dust to Dust #3. Written by JG Jones & Phil Bram and art and cover art by JG Jones (Silver Medalist). Sheriff Meadows tried to convince people around him that the mysterious dust storm did not cause a family’s truck to burst into flames. He suspects foul play but no one else seems to buy into it. This was my favorite of the Dust to Dust issues so far as I was into the investigation.

The Tin Can Society #6. Written by Peter Warren and art by Francesco Mobili. Cover art was by Francesco Mobili and Chris Chuckry. I swear Tin Can Society has the absolute best cliffhangers/last pages of any series out there. My jaw dropped at the last page of this issue.

The Immortal Thor #21. “Two Did Enter.” Written by Al Ewing and art by Jan Bazaldua. Cover art was done by Alex Ross (Bronze Medalist-tied). We get a Executioner-centric issue as he faces off with Thor as they fight over who will go ahead to face the danger coming.

Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #6. “Shame.” Written by Jed MacKay and art by Domenico Carbone. Davide Paratore did the cover art. I have to say that I was a bit confused by this issue and I do not remember much about it. I do love the cover from Davide Paratore and it was nearly a medalist this week.

The Fade #1-2. Written by Aabria Iyengar and illustrated and cover art by Mari Costa. Another fun independent book from the shelves of In This Issue. I liked this story and the way they brought the “Fade” into the book. Is it just all in their minds? This was a great couple of books.

Sam and Twitch Case Files #11. Written by Jordan Barel and Todd McFarlane with art by Thomas Nachlik (with special thanks to Magnus Arts). Cover art was done by Raymond Gay & Marco Failla. This issue focuses more on Twitch than we have gotten in the entire series.

Secret Six #1. Written by Nicole Maines and art by Stephen Segovia. Segovia and Rain Beredo did the cover art. It is another DC book that I liked a lot. I just grabbed this at Comic World this week because the heroes intrigued me and… dang it… I really enjoyed this one too. I have too many DZC books on my list. I don’t need another, but… it looks like I have another.

Parliament of Rooks #4. Written by Abigail Jill Harding with Richard Starkings and illustrated and cover art by Abigail Jill Harding. Things are taking a sharp turn for the worse with our mismatched lovers. There are a lot of monster fight going down this issue and it feels like it is building towards a conclusion.

Hyde Street #4. Storytellers are Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis. Cover art was done by Ivan Reis & Danny Miki with Brad Anderson. This month’s tale is of an actor cast in the role of Frankenstein’s Monster in an Abbott and Costello movie and his problematic path, from hours in the makeup chair to injuries to his eyes. Hyde Street continues to be one of the more entertaining horror anthologies of the month.

Blade Forger #1. “Sakima.” Written by Inaki Miranda & Roy Miranda with art and cover art by Inaki Miranda. I liked this book even though it felt all over the place. It is told over the span of decades and feels like a mixture of current and fantasy storytelling.

Scarlet Witch #10. Written by Steve Orlando and art by Jacopo Camagni with Russell Dauterman. Variant cover C art by Corin Howell & Raul Angulo. This next run of Scarlet Witch books came to an end with this issue. It looks as if Wanda is going to have a new series coming up with Vision. I am not sure why they can’t just keep these as a Scarlet Witch book featuring the extra character. They did the same thing last year with Quicksilver.

Blade Red Band #5. Written by Bryan Hill and art by Federica Mancin. Cover art was by David Yardin & Romulo Fajardo Jr. This also brings this round of Blade books to a close. Only five issues for Blade this time. Blade is much like Wanda because they both come back for short runs in a book and then go away for a short period before they return in a new volume. I wish Marvel would not do that so many times or call it a mini-series and put the numbering on the cover (such as 5 of 5).

Two-Face #4. “The Trial of Harvey Dent.” Written by Christian Ward and art by Fabio Veras. Cover art was by Baldemar Rivas. This Two-Face series has been bat-shit crazy. All of the action inside Harvey Dent’s mind, but we are learning a ton about the character of Two face. It has been a great read.

Justice League: The Atom Project #3. “The Bond.” Written by Ryan Parrott and John Ridley and art and cover art by Mike Perkins. Captain Atom is in a difficult mindset and he is not quite in a state of mind for help from the other Atoms.

Other books this week: Web of Spider-Verse: New Blood #1, The Nice House by the Sea #6, Living Hell #3, Moon Man #7, Knights vs. Samurai #6, and Huge Detective #4.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #141

March 2

It is Sunday morning and the EYG Comic Cavalcade is a little bit late. That was because much of Saturday was taken up for me with watching Last Breath, the Animated and Live-action Oscar nominated shorts, and the Elimination Chamber, where John Cena turned heel. It was an epically busy day and so, while I was able to finish reading the books Saturday morning, this write-up had to wait.

One of the things I received in the mail this week was a graphic novel that I had supported through Kickstarter. It was called Oxymoron, and I actually got two graphic novels. The second one was the most recent book entitled Oxymoron: Killing Time. The book is edited by Tyler James and he was the driving force behind the Kickstarter. Oxymoron is a killer clown type character going through time to wipe out those who deserved it… in his own warped opinion. It was a fun book that I am happy to have supported.

Still a pretty big week at Comic World this week. I had to take two trips up to Dubuque because of the shipment problems facing Diamond, but it was worth my time for sure.

Books this week:

Black Canary: Best of the Best #4. “Round Four.” Written by Tom King and art and cover art by Ryan Sook. I love this series so far. I have never been a fan of Black Canary. I mean, she was always fine, but she was never anything special to me, but this series has taken her and made this book one of the first ones I read when it comes out. Black Canary takes a turn in her battle with Lady Shiva. Tom King is excellent at these story arc type series.

Amazing Spider-Man #68. DEATHS. “Cain is Able.” Written by Christos Gage and art by Mark Buckingham. Buckingham & Richard Isanove did the cover art. Spidey is dead, and the Juggernaut steps up. I still do not understand why Marvel wants to do these dot issues (.DEATHS). Why do you just make this #69 instead. I have not been a fan of the 8 Deaths of Spider-Man arc and I will be pleased when it comes to a close in a few issues.

The Department of Truth #28. Written by James Tynion IV and art and cover art by Martin Simmonds. Tynion’s conspiratorial series continues with a shocking return of Hawk at the end of another trippy episode. It is always difficult to know what is going down with the Department of Truth, but it is a lot of fun to try and figure it out.

Behemoth #2. Written by Grant Sputore & Ryan Engle. Art and cover art was done by Jay Martin (Bronze medalist). This Dark Horse comic has been awesome so far. Who knew the dangers that could be found after your bus has been swallowed by a monster. I mean besides digestion. There are all kinds of shocks in this book and I am here for it.

Ultraman X Avengers #4. Written by Kyle Higgins & Mat Groom. Art was done by Francesco Manna. This special crossover comes to a conclusion as the Avengers and Ultra Guard match up with Galactus in an attempt to save the universe. All of which ends in a karaoke party. Yup, that is true.

Sentinels #5. “Factory Settings” Written by Alex Paknadel and art by Jason Mason. Cover art was done by Jason Mason and Federico Blee. This mini series ends with this issue. Sentinels has been an okay book, but I am not sure that it will be a memorable one. Will I remember anything about it in a month or so? Not sure. I’m glad I own it though.

Silence #2. Written by Evan K. Pozios and art and cover art by Alex Sanchez. It has been awhile since issue number one came out and so it required some recollection on what was going on. A famed comic artist is in a small town called Silence and weirdness is going on. I do like the art style in this book, as it feels different than what I am used to. There is only one more issue remaining of this book from Afterlight Comics.

Hello Darkness #8. This anthology book continues to be highly entertaining from Boom! Studios. I do enjoy a horror anthology. This issue featured the continuation of James Tynion IV’s Erica Slaughter story has has been in three other issues prior. It also saw the end of the Garth Ennis story, “The War.”

Justice League Unlimited #4. Written by Mark Waid and art and cover art by Dan Mora. Tefé Holland is recruited by Mister Terrific to do what she can to stop the inferno and save the Green. Batman and J’onn J’ones interact as well. The Justice League continues to be a solid read each issue with so many possible guest stars.

Ripperland #2. Written by Steve Orlando and John Harris Dunning with art and cover art by Alessandro Oliveri (Silver medalist). The mystery of the serial killer that has some ties to Jack the Ripper continues in the distant future.

Green Lantern Dark #3. “New Camelot.” Written by Tate Brombal and art by Werther Dell’Edera. Cover art was by Werther Dell’Edera and Giovanna Niro. I really enjoyed the Elseworld version of Green Lantern. This has been a fun and engaging series so far, even if the book reads like what if Erica Slaughter had the power of Green Lantern.

The Human Fly #3. Written by Christopher Sequeira and Jason Franks. Art and cover art was done by Jan Scherpenhuizen (Silver Medalist). This IPI Comics book is very intriguing so far. I like the superhero/super spy type feeling the Human Fly gives us and there are some interesting mysteries of what is going on.

Red Hulk #1. “Think Tank.” Written by Benjamin Percy and art by Geoff Shaw. Variant cover B art by Todd Nauck & Rachelle Rosenberg. Hot off his appearance in Captain America: Brave New World, Thaddeus Ross is back as the Red Hulk, under control of the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Doom. There is an eclectic band of other characters in the same Latverian prison as Ross, so we will be seeing a team up mving forward.

Captain America & Volstagg #1. Written by J. Michael Straczynski and art by Bernard Chang. Terry & Rachel Dotson did the cover art. This is the latest issue in the whole Marvel teams up some characters that you would never expect to team up series of books. Cap and Warriors Three member Volstagg would not have been my first choice, but they worked together nicely. It made sense, which is an important factor.

Hellhunters #3. Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and art by Adam Gordon. Cover art was done by Jonas Scharf & Alex Guimaraes. Back in World War II, welcome to the Hellhunters… Bucky Barnes. Young Bucky is out to prove his worth and he joined up with Fury, Ghost Rider and the rest. Fun WWII action in this series, with plenty of supernatural flow as well.

Iron Man #5.Destroy the Machines.” Written by Spencer Ackerman and art by Jeremy Pina. Cover art was done by Yasmine Putri. Iron Man, Ironheart and Melinda May battled Lucia Von Bardas and her Stark Sentinel.

TVA #3. Written by Katharyn Blair and art by Pere Perez. Cover art was done by Pere Perez and GURU e-FX (Bronze medalist). Thankfully, Mobius survived his attack from last issue, even though he looked really dead, in a pool of his own blood. I have enjoyed the grouping of these characters in this issue so far.

X-Men #12. “Work Release.” Written by Jed MacKay and art by Netho Diaz. Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, and Marte Gracia did the cover art. Helping out with the X-Men in this issue… it is Alpha Flight! I always loved Alpha Flight so it was cool to see so many of their classic characters back in the pages of the X-Men where they were originally born.

Ultimate Spider-Man #14. Written by Jonathan Hickman and art by Marco Checchetto. Cover art was done by Marco Checchetto and Matthew Wilson. I also picked up the variant (1:25) with cover art by Carmen Carnero. With Richard and Black Cat growing closer, there is a shocking death at the hands of Kraven. I did not expect this death, so maybe there will be some shenanigans coming with it.

Fantastic Four #29. “The Dream Team.” Written by Ryan North and penciled by Cory Smith. Cover art is by Joshua Cassara & Dean White. Welcome back as a special guest star this issue… She-Hulk! Jen, Ben and Sue team up to try and save some vampire children. There is a weird sentence.

Uncanny Valley #8. Written by Tony Fleecs with art and cover art by Dave Wachter. Oliver is still in the world of cartoons, and he is trying to find his way back to his mom and grandpa, while avoiding the First. There are a group of purple creatures that may bear some resemblance to the Smurfs (only not blue) that Oliver meets. Uncanny Valley is an entertaining and creative book every month.

Nights #13. “Viva Las Gray-gas.” Written by Wyatt Kennedy and art by Luigi Formisano. I thought Nights was done, but then I was surprised by issue #13 in the previews. I wonder how much the continuation of this series was based on the animated series that is in the works from Titmouse, the company behind Netflix’s Big Mouth. I’m sure Image is not above using the publicity to sell more comics. It is a smart idea. And this issue was a nice one to jump on to if you were unfamiliar with the first 12 issues.

Absolute Wonder Woman #5. “The Last Amazon Part 5 of 5.” Written by Kelly Thompson and art by Hayden Sherman. Cover art was done by Hayden Sherman and Jordie Bellaire. Diana takes some drastic steps to defeat the giant monster… she turned herself into Medusa. I do like how this series ties Diana to Greek mythology even more than before.

Metamorpho #3. “The Man from J.A.V.A.” Written by Al Ewing and art by Steve Lieber. Steve lieber & Lee Loughridge did the cover art. This issue is heavily including Java, who was once Rex Mason’s second hand. Java is now a secret agent. Oh and Metamorpho and Sapphire split up. And then there is Java, Java, Java, Java, Java, Java, Java and Java (Happy Todd?)

Hornsby & Halo #4. I started to read this issue from Image’s Ghost Machine imprint, but I was really confused. It felt as if I was missing something from this story because Hornsby and Halo were together and they both were using their powers together. I did not remember that so I went to my CZL app and found out that I was missing issue #3. So I stopped reading this one and put it aside until my order from eBay gets here.

Other books this week: In Bloom #3, FML #4, Women of Marvel: She-Devils #1, The Seasons #2, Rogue the Savage Land #2, Ultimate X-Men #12, and Milestone Universe: The Shadow Cabinet #4.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #140

February 22

Another big week of books, both from Comic World and eBay.

One of the books that I picked up off eBay was Come Find Me, which was a one shot from DSTLRY. I have become a big fan of this company, but I have one major problem. The books do not come out on a regular basis. There are great issues and then it feels like months before the next issue comes out. A one shot like this is nice. It is also an anthology, so there are a variety of stories within it.

Other books this week:

Bug Wars #1. “The House of Slaymaker” Written by Jason Aaron and drawn by Mahmud Asrar. Cover art by Mahmud Asrar & Matthew Wilson. I picked up this issue off eBay because it was sold out so quickly across the comic book shops. I’m not sure why it was this hot, but it was a really great issue form one of the best writers in the business in Jason Aaron. Lots of fun.

Behemoth #1. Written by Grant Sputore & Ryan Engle and art and cover art by Jay Martin. Another great new comic, this time from Dark Horse. What a wonderful concept this book has. A bus load full of people wind up getting eaten by a giant monster and they have to survive inside. This was more fun and I am pleased that I was able to get this issue after a bit of delay.

Amazing Spider-Man #68. Written by Justina Ireland and penciled by Andrea Broccardo. Cover art was done by Patrick Gleason and Richard Isanove. Peter gives up his remaining life power up thingies to save Aunt May, Randy and Shea… and some other guy… who got killed because Peter was having his crisis. I will be happy when this arc is over since I do not feel as if this writer has a good enough grasp on Spider-Man.

Ripperland #1. Written by Steve Orlando & John Harris Dunning and art and cover art by Alessandro Oliveri. Ripperland is another new banger from Dark Horse. I have always been a big fan of Jack the Ripper (I know that doesn’t sound right…) so this hit a sweet spot for me.

Laura Kinney: Wolverine #3. “The Devil in Me- Part 2” Written by Erica Schultz and art by Giada Belviso. Cover art is done by Elena Casagrande & Edgar Delgado. Laura and Elektra, aka Wolverine and Daredevil, are out battling the forces looking to hurt mutants. Laura and Elektra are a good pair and a lot of fun.

Green Hornet Miss Fury #2. Written by Alex Segura & Henry Barajas with art by Federico Sorressa. Cover art was done by Francesco Francavilla. I have been liking this pairing of two classic noir characters. Dynamite has been doing some fun books lately and this one works so much.

Kill Train #1. Written by Olivia Cuartero-Briggs and art by Martina Niosi. Cover art was done by Skylar Patridge. Another good new series, this one was from Mad Cave. Todd grabbed this one for me in Des Moines. I have to say that this series did a great job of setting up the story f these trains.

Uncanny X-Men #10. “Off the LeashPart Two. Written by Gail Simone and art by Andrei Bressan. Cover art was done by David Marquez & Matthew Wilson. I was worried about Deathdream because he surely looked dead last issue. Thankfully, he was able to survive the event and this issue gave us the chance to get to know our new characters more. And I liked them.

Dust to Dust #2. Written by JG Jones & Phil Bram and art and cover art by JG Jones. The dust storms are still causing trouble. I still love the look of this book. It is one of the most interesting looking books on the market right now. Very dramatic cover too.

Mystique #5. “Compromised” Written, art and cover art by Declan Shalvey (Silver Medalist). This series came to a great conclusion. This series had a really great series of covers. Declan Shalvey did a great job on this series, considering he was doing most everything on the book.

Doll Parts: A Lovesick Tale #3. Written , illustrated and cover art by Luana Vecchio. Another book where the writing and art are done by a single person. Luana Vecchio also did multiple variant covers for this series. Doll Parts has been a wild story so far and this issue takes it to another level. This has so much adult content among these young characters that it can be unnerving to read at times. Still very much compelling though.

Zatanna #1. “A Tilnoom Edalb” Written, art and cover art by Jamal Campbell. Weird. Third straight book where the creative did all of the writing and art. This felt very different than the previous Zatanna series from late last year. She sure took a bad blow near the end of the book. Of course, she will not die. I mean, it is her book. I’m not sure if I will be a long term reader on this one, but I will mot likely give it another issue or two before I decide.

Thunderbolts: Doomstrike #1. “A Doomed Man.” Written by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly. Art was done by Tommaso Bianchi and cover art was from Leinil Francis Yu & Romulo Fajardo Jr. Bucky and Black Widow are the remaining Thunderbolts trying to face off with Dr. Doom. Things do not go well for them, nor does it go well for residents of Shelbyville, Indiana.

Doom Academy #1. Written by Mackenzie Cadenhead and art by Pasqual Ferry. Cover art was done by Pablo Villalobos. Strange Academy gets a face lift and a new location. Latveria! I have loved the Strange Academy characters and to see them in the new place spices things up as they have some new learning to do. I love the new character of Scoop.

Daredevil #18. “Introductory Rites” Part Eighteen. Written by Saladin Ahmed and art by Aaron Kuder. Cover art was done by John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna and Richard Isanove. Matt Murdock returns to a court of law… only to get his butt kicked by the possessed Foggy Nelson. Can DD get through the case while still stopping these demons?

Mine is a Long, Lonesome Grave #1. Written by Justin Jordan and illustrated and cover art by Chris Shehan. This is a new independent book from Oni Press and it was a good read. Harley Creed is a bad man. Someone placed a hex on Harley and he has seven days to try and reverse it or he will die in twisted, screaming agony. This was a good week (or weeks) for new independent books. Long title though.

The Patchwork Girl of Oz #2. Adapted, illustrated and cover art by Otis Frampton. Based on the novel by Oz author L. Frank Baum. I was surprised how much I liked the first issue of this, which I was not expecting in my pull box. I am sure it was a book that I asked for, but just did not remember it. However, I have had a lot of fun with this book and this issue gives us our first glance at the Patchwork Girl. She looks awesome.

Daredevil: Unleash Hell #2. Written by Erica Schultz and penciled by Valentina Pinti & Jose Luis Soares. Paulo Siqueria & Rachelle Rosenberg did the cover art. Our new Muse is being led along by the ghost of the original Muse and it is great. I loved the character of Muse and seeing a new form of the serial killing artist is epic.

Infinity Watch #2. Written by Derek Landy and art by Ruairi Coleman and Enid Balám. Salvador Larroca & GURU-eFX did the cover art. Avery Zavala is a stone bearer from another timeline and he pretty much kills all of the Infinity Watch. I’m not completely sure what is going on, but it feels as if there are shenanigans.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #30. Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Luigi Zagaria. Federico Vicentini & Neeraj Menon did the cover art. The Miles Morales and Deadpool showdown continue don from the previous Deadpool issue as Miles comes face to face with Princess.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #3. Written by Christos Gage and art by Eric Gapstur. Leonardo Romero did the cover art. This prequel series to the Disney + animated series continued with Peter trying out for football. This book has been fun, but the animated series was one of the best Spidey animated series of all time. You should check it out on Disney + for sure.

Ultimate Wolverine #2. Written by Chris Condon and art by Alessandro Cappuccio. Cover art was done by Alessandro Cappuccio and Frank Martin. Ultimate Wolverine has only had two issues so far, but it is right there beside Ultimate Spider-Man as the best Ultimate book so far. This is full of action and having the Winter Soldier version of Logan? Epic!

Let This One be a Devil #1. Written by James Tynion IV and Steve Foxe with art by Piotr Kowalski. Gavin Fullerton did the cover art. Another banger from Dark Horse this week. A new horror series from James Tynion IV gives us a couple different time lines, including a horrific birth. I do love me some Tynion IV.

NYX #8. Written by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly with art done by Francesco Mortarino. Laura Kinney faces off with Julian in a massively emotional conflict. Can she stop him without popping her claws? Is that what he really wants her to do?

Exceptional X-Men #6. Written by Eve L. Ewing and art by Carmen Carnero. Cover art by Carmen Carnero and Nolan Woodard. We are introduced to Sheldon Xenos, a mutant who has a job for the young mutants being trained by Kitty and Emma. Does he have their best interest at heart? Axo believes so. I disagree.

Weapon X-Men #1. “The Real Thing” Written by Joe Casey and penciled by Chriscross. Alex Ross did the cover art. Wolverine. Deadpool. Cable. Thunderbird. Chamber. Sounds like a huge team up. However, one of them will betray another. Which one will it be?

The Question: All Along the Watchtower #4. “The Great Escape” Written by Alex Segura and art by Cian Tormey & Raul Fernandez. Cover art by Tormey & Romulo Fajardo Jr. Cyborg Superman has taken over the Watchtower and only The Question can stop him. Or can she? Things do not look good for our detective.

X-Factor #7. “Terms of Use” Written by Mark Russell and art by Bob Quinn. Cover art was by Greg Land & Frank D’Armata. Angel returned to take the mantel of leadership as X-Factor heads to Genosha to try and prevent Dr. Doom from getting his hands on a special weapon.

G.I. Joe #4. Written by Joshua Williamson and art and cover art by Tom Reilly. The Joes are captured by Cobra after Duke surrendered. Why does it seem like Duke believes that they have got Cobra right where they want them?

Werewolf by Night Red Band #7. Written by Jason Loo and penciled by Sergio Davila. E.M. Gist did the cover art. Jack Russell is in serious trouble, but thankfully, Elsa Bloodstone is not dead and on the case. She is building her own group to help Jack and it features her own Werewolf by Night (Jake) and Reptil.

House of Slaughter #30. Written by Sam Johns and illustrated by Letizia Cadonici. Cover art was done by Jorge Fornes and Werther Dell’Edera (Gold Medalist). I have been very down on this series recently, though the covers have been fire. I believe this arc, “Azure” is done with this issue and I hope the next one is more engaging for me.

Incredible Hulk #22. “The Skin of Charlie Tidwell” Part One. Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and art by Nic Klein. Matthew Wilson did the cover art. Things are still bad off for Charlie, as she is becoming more of a monster than Hulk expected.

Other books this week: X-Force #8, Ultimate Black Panther #13, W0rldtr33 #13, Shazam #20 (Bronze Medalist), Creature Commandos #5, Challengers of the Unknown #3, Seance in the Asylum #3-4, Aliens vs. Avengers #3, The Power Fantasy #6, and New Gods #3.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man S1 E9, E10

Spoilers

“Hero or Menace”

“If This Be My Destiny…”

The finale two episodes of the first season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man are absolutely amazing!

In episode nine, we get a big showdown between Spidey and Scorpion, with Lonny smack dab in the middle. Lonny gets exposed to a gas that gives him super strength (and will eventually turn him into the Tombstone we know in the comics). Spidey and Lonny defeat Scorpion.

In episode ten, we have a big battle with Dr. Strange and the symbiote and we are shown that this battle is what would lead to the battle from the first episode at Peter’s school, and the spider that bit Peter was the spider that Norman had created with Spider-Man’s blood that they had collected. I loved that adjustment in the story. It made everything work for me.

The writing on this series has been excellent. It has developed more than just Peter Parker. I feel like they built the supporting characters around Peter so well, especially Lonny who could arguably be considered a co-lead character. They show us the beginning of several villains in the Spider-Man world, like Otto Octavius, Scorpion, Norman Osborn, Venom etc.

With Spider-Man’s actual suit debuting in episode nine, Spider-Man looked sensational. The animation of these episodes were so great with some amazing shots. I have not necessarily loved the animation prior, but this seemed to really be something special.

The voice acting did great all season long. Everything was excellent, especially Coleman Domingo, who was so epic. I would love to see Domingo play Norman Osborn in the MCU. The show has done a great job of slowly building Norman into who we expect he will become. And yet, it feels very justified.

I did not expect this series to be great because recent Spider-Man animation has been more directed toward very young children. This series was right up there with the best Spider-Man series and right there with X-Men ’97. I am happy that this series has a three season order so there are at least two more to go.

I love Spider-Man.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man S1 E6, E7, E8

Spoilers

“Duel with the Devil”

“Scorpion Rising”

“Tangled Web”

The next three episodes of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man dropped on Disney + today and, boy, they were epic. I really liked how the three episodes worked together a story seeing Spider-Man get his butt kicked a couple of different times.

Daredevil showed up… and voiced by Charlie Cox. Spidey and DD fought, with Daredevil showing the inexperienced Spider-Man what a real fighter was like.

Then the arrival of Scorpion led to Spidey getting beaten so bad that he was nearly killed.

Lonny kept his downward spiral towards Tombstone going as he imbedded himself into the 110 Street gang even more. Pearl discovered his involvement and things went poorly.

There were some great scenes with Nico and Harry as they begin to show some signs of a connection. The whole Nico drag racing scene was a lot of fun and teased the powers that Nico have.

Otto Octavius is arrested… by Iron Man? We get a hint at his future with the octopus arms working separately from Ock.

Having Norman Osborn do the “Great Responsibility” line and switch it around to make it “Great Responsibility – Great Respect” fits the character well. It is a really awesome, unexpected turn.

And we are just about to have the actual Spider-Man suit, as we got a giant tease at the very end of episode 8.

There are just two more episodes remaining in season one and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has been an excellent Spider-Man animated show. It is well written and blended together well.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #138

February 6

We had some ice last night in the weather and it has led to there being a no school day today after I had a personal day on NEW COMIC BOOK DAY. All that meant that I had some open time to finish reading the books and the EYG Comic Cavalcade is able to come out early this week.

I picked up several graphic novels yesterday, two at Comic World and two at BAM!. At Comic World, I grabbed We Called Them Giants by Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans and Fantastic Four: Season One by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and David Marquez. The Gillen/Hans book is beautiful and really great. At BAM!, I got Dark Horse graphic novel Skull and Bones: Savage Storm by John Jackson Miller and James Mischler and the beautifully drawn The Road, adapted by Manu Larcenet.

This is a double dose of Marvel this week as the missing shipment from Diamond (boooooo) last week arrived with this week’s books. Diamond is really setting themselves up as the antagonist of this column.

Books this week:

Exorcism at 1600 Penn #3. Written by Hannah Rose May and art by Vanesa Del Ray. Cover art was done by Vanesa Del Ray. The possession of the President’s daughter takes more steps forward as Kevin tries to convince everyone that it was happening. I was getting frustrated how these adults were all so blind with their denial, but it seemed like everyone has come around to the truth as the penultimate issue of this series concluded.

Deadpool #10. Written by Cody Ziglar and art by Roge Antonio. Taurin Clarke did the cover art. Deadpool and Ellie are back from the dead with their healing factors compromised. Taskmaster tried to help them train their fighting style to adjust. I was not a huge fan of this issue or the way they have downgraded Deadpool’s healing factor. I am willing to see where they go.

The Patchwork Girl of Oz #1. Adapted, Illustrated and cover art by Otis Frampton. This is an adaptation of one of the novels from L. Frank Baum and I really enjoyed it. It was a surprise to find it in my box, because I did not remember actually ordering it (I’m not saying I didn’t do it. Just did not remember it). I like the more cartoony art here because it worked so well with this story. I found this to be very joyous.

Hellhunters #2. Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and drawn by Adam Gorham. Variant cover art by Salvador Larroca & Edgar Delgado. This World War II series with these characters continues to be interesting, especially now that Logan (aka Wolverine) has joined the crew. He has made it much bloodier than it had been. This dynamic is intriguing as well.

Namor #7. “The Battle of the Eighth” Written by Jason Aaron and art by Paul Davidson & Alex Lins. Varian Cover art by Olivier Coipel (Silver Medalist). I thought this was epic. Namor facing down the leaders of the different ocean kingdoms. Namor’s battles were so awesome.

The Ultimates #9. Written by Deniz Camp and guest artist is Chris Allen. Cover art was done by Dike Ruan & Neeraj J. Menon (Bronze Medalist). We get a whole issue featuring Luke Cage in jail. This Ultimate universe continues to be rocking hard.

Spider-Boy #15. “All Eyes on the Prize.” Written by Dan Slott and art by Paco Medina. with Spider-Girl’s origin art by Humberto Ramos & Edgar Delgado. Cover art by Paco Medina and Edgar Delgado. The Dragon’s Challenge rolled on as we end up with a final battle between Daredevil & Spider-Boy and Bullseye & Spider-Girl. Daredevil does something to protect Bailey that was unexpected and costs them dearly.

Avengers #23. “The Casino Job Part 2” Written by Jed MacKay and art by Farid Karami. Cover art was done by Valerio Schiti & Alex Sinclair. The ultimate odd couple is taking on the Avengers this week. Kang the Conqueror and the Black Cat. Huh? Strange pairing for sure, but Kang needs someone to steal something and he chose Felicia.

The Spectacular Spider-Men #12. “Hero Worship.” Written by Greg Weisman and art by Emilio Laiso. Cover art was done by David Baldeón and Edgar Delgado. The two Electros return and are about to defeat the two Spider-Men until we get the appearance of a scaly surprise. Honestly, this issue felt a little lesser than it has been recently. We’ll see how it goes from here.

X-Men #10. “Brinksmanship.” Written by Jed MacKay and penciled by Netho Diaz. Cover art was done by Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer and Marte Gracia (Gold Medalists). This was another epic issue that was highlighted with a tension filled confrontation between Cyclops and Lundqvist. This scene was just awesome and stood out as one of the best one-on-one verbal matchups in the entire series. I loved this.

Juvenile #3. Written, illustrated and cover art by Jesus Orellana. Juvenile has just been a tremendous book over the first three issues. Sara and Max are amazing together and there is a ton of stress after they are recaptured from their escape attempt. What is going to happen to them? It is especially up in the air after we see Ella. This might be my current favorite independent book going.

Justice League: The Atom Project #2.Cold Fusion.” Written by Ryan Parrott and John Ridley and art and cover by Mike Perkins. I will admit that I was not as into this issue of the series as I was issue #1. I do like super powered polar bears though.

Absolute Superman #4. “Chasing the Storm.” Written by Jason Aaron and art by Rafa Sandoval. Rafa Sandoval & Ulises Arreola did the cover art. Superman seems to be messing with the Peacemakers, and they are not happy about it. I actually thought this was the weakest of the Absolute Superman books so far too. Still, I like this new take on the character.

Ultimate X-Men #11. Written, illustrated and cover art by Peach Momoko. This was an interesting book. There were several mentions of other Ultimate books, including Black Panther and the new Black Cat. I wonder if this was included to make sure everyone understood that the Ultimate X-Men was still taking place in the same universe even though it is so different from anything else.

Sabretooth: The Dead Don’t Talk #2. Written by Frank Tieri and art by Michael Sta. Maria. Tyler Kirkham and Arif Prianto did the cover art. I enjoyed how this book is building the world of this time, with all of these groups vying for power. Plus, Sabretooth takes on an alligator man. Always fun.

When I Lay My Vengeance Upon Thee #2. Written by Gus Moreno and illustrated and cover art by Jakub Rebelka. More possession this week as Father Stygian and Father Barrera have to face some seriously gross stuff.

Frankenstein New World: The Sea of Forever #1. Script by Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden & Thomas Sniegoski. A follow up series from ten years ago, Mike Mignola returned to Frankenstein and young Lilja following her vision above ground. I like this take on the Frankenstein story in this new series from Dark Horse.

Parliament of Rooks #3. Written by Abigail Jill Harding with Richard Starkings and illustrated by Abigail Jill Harding. Darius has gone full monster form, though his thoughts are still with his beloved Princess Seraphina. Some beautifully drawn monster images make this book stand out. I am curious to see how this Ablaze book wraps up.

Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #4. “Rats” Written by Jed MacKay and art by Devmalya Pramanik. Davide Paratore did the cover art. Things are going rough for Moon Knight as he is out for vengeance of those that killed the Midnight Mission. Moon Knight takes it to another bloody level.

In Bloom #2. Written by Michael W. Conrad and art by John J. Pearson with Lola Bonato. John J. Pearson did the cover art. The story of the people “blooming” take another turn in a much more shocking and graphic manner. There were a couple of scenes of pure horror in this book.

Storm: Lifedream #1. Cover art was by Taurin Clarke. There are three different chapters of this Storm story that is written by and drawn by different teams. I do enjoy me some Storm and this does cover a long part of her history. It is clear that there are big plans moving ahead for Ororo Munroe.

Red Before Black #4. Written by Stephanie Phillips and illustrated by Goran Sudžuka. Goran Sudžuka with Ive Svorcina did the cover art. This book has been reminding me of Thelma and Louise while bringing in a character this issue that made me think of the Crocodile Hunter. Lots of fun.

What If Galactus Transformed Spider-Gwen #1. “Tipping the Scales.” Written by Kalinda Vazquez and art by Daniel Picciotto. Ron Lim and Israel Silva did the cover art. This is the final of the What If Galactus series and this book felt the same as a lot of the others. I was enjoying the set up, but the book ended before the big final battle. This left me feeling unsatisfied as many of these recent What Ifs have. I thought this was an excellent HALF of a story.

Power Man: Timeless #1. “Something New” Written by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly and art by Bernard Chang. Andrei Bressan & Rachelle Rosenberg did the cover art. This is the surprise of the week. I did not expect this to be a new series. I was not a fan of the previous Power Man: Timeless one shot from a few months ago, but this was great. They brought this Power Man into the 616 universe (it seemed like) and I suddenly found his adventure engaging as could be. I never thought I would want to read on with this book, but I do.

Phoenix #8. Written by Stephanie Phillips and art by Alessandro Miracolo. Yasmine Putri did the cover art. Jean Grey is going through some personal growth inside a cocoon? We get the new form of Phoenix at the end.

Wolverine #6. “Lineage.” Written by Saladin Ahmed and art by Martin Coccolo with Martin Coccolo and Bryan Valenza did the cover art. Laura arrived in the book to help Logan follow the clues that are leading them to Adamantine.

Two-Face #3. Wild, but I could not find the creator credits inside this issue of Two-Face. The cover listed Ward, Veras & Plascencia but that was all I could find. I found the creators of the few pages of Zatanna at the end of the book that is appearing in all of the DC books this month. The Two-Face book has been good so far as we get a big reveal at the end of it.

Psylocke #3. “Lady-Killer.” Written by Alyssa Wong and art by Vincenzo Carratù. Cover art was done by Mahmud Asrar & Matthew Wilson. This was a solid issue of Psylocke as she met up with John Greycrow, after finding his bloody arm with a note on it last issue. This was probably my favorite issue of the series so far.

Scarlet Witch #9. Written by Steve Orlando and art by Jacopo Camagni. Russell Dauterman did the cover art. Hey, fresh off her appearance in the Avengers, Black Cat is now here stealing from Wanda. Felicia is really giving those luck powers a go. Not sure why Black Cat has suddenly been everywhere, but I don’t mind it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #6. Written by Jason Aaron and art by Juan Ferreyra. Cover art was by Jorge Fornes. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back together and… things are falling apart. They can’t get along and spend most of this issue fighting with each other. And Donnie is carrying around a rat claiming it is Master Splinter. Things aren’t good for the Turtles.

Other books this week: Grim #21, Rocketfellers #3, Bitter Root: The Next Movement ashcan, and Spirits of Vengeance #6.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man S1 E3, E4, E5

Spoilers

“Secret Identity Crisis”

“Hitting the Big Time”

“The Unicorn Unleashed”

The second week of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man on Disney + saw the release of three new episodes. Three solid episodes again this week as we see several new interpretations of Spider-villains as well as the debut of one of the most iconic ones.

The dual story of Peter’s rise as Spider-Man and Lonnie Lincoln’s downward spiral to Tombstone is fascinating. They are spending a ton of time building the character of Tombstone to become, perhaps, the big bad of the series, long term.

But we also got our first look at Otto Octavius, pre-Octopus arms. It is revealed that Octavius is behind the weapons that have been showing up around New York.

We got a version of Speed Demon, Unicorn and who will eventually (I think) become Rhino.

Harry Osborn is brought into the “Team Spider-Man” by Norman. Norman said that he couldn’t always be available, but his son could. The Peter-Harry friendship is starting to develop, even though Harry seems to be becoming Peter’s Ned Leeds in this cartoon.

This is also interesting since the show is using the Iron Man/Captain America MCU storyline as a backdrop. I assume they will show up sooner or later.

My biggest problem I have in this show is the fact that everybody wears the same clothes every time. I know it is meant to identify these characters, but it is becoming very odd. I want Peter in something besides that yellow shirt and blue jacket.

I would say that the animation style is still a little distracting, but the storytelling has been top notch so far.

EYG Comic Cavalcade #137

February 1

Hey, it is time for the EYG Comic Cavalcade. Diamond still has not gotten things straightened out so it is a slighter week this week with no Marvel books. However, next week could be a massive week… that is if next week’s Diamond’s order can get there. I am not holding my breathe.

Today, before I went to see the movie Presence, I went to a comic shop in Davenport. I was curious and I googled to see what comic shops were in the Quad Cities. One seemed easy to get to so I picked it. The parking was horrendous, and the shop, to be honest, was like an armpit. It reminded me of Comic World when it used to be down on Central in Dubuque, only much smaller. There were boxes and piles of comics everywhere. It reminded me of Todd’s storage lot (hee hee hee).

I was hoping that there would be some smaller independent books that hadn’t been ordered at Comic World that I could pick up. There was not a ton of new issues, but there were some. For example, I picked up the Deadly Tales of the Gunslinger #2, which was a Spawn book that featured a beautiful Mark Spears cover. I had not intended on buying it, but since I saw it there for cover price, I picked it up. I also grabbed the Superman/Lex Luthor #1 book that I was not overly interested in and a foil covered Ultimate Spider-Man #13. I felt like I needed to buy something to make the trip worthwhile, and I think I picked up some fun books.

Books this week (minus Marvel):

Ice Cream Man #43. I do think my favorite horror series is Ice Cream Man and this issue has an awesome gimmick: One-Page Horror Stories. This was my favorite book of the week with very short stories by some of the greats including Grant Morrison, Patton Oswalt, Jeff Lemire, Zoe Thorogood, Geoff Johns, Matt Fraction, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Good Old Neon, Deniz Camp, and Frank Barbiere. The art for the entire book was done by Martin Morazzo and Chris O’Halloran (except for three others: Good Old Neon, Zoe Thorogood, and Ashley Walker). The cover art was done by Ryan Quackenbush.

Silverhawks #1. Written by Ed Brisson and art by George Kambadais. I have cover A by Lucio Parrillo. There are only about 5 million covers for this book. That is hyperbole, but there are literally three pages at the back of the book showing all the variant covers for this book. I can’t imagine that there is any collector anywhere who can purchase all of these covers from Cover A to Cover ZZD (+ a bunch of retailer exclusives). Dynamite has been solid recently, and I enjoyed this book too, with a passing of the torch for a new era of Silverhawks.

Freddie the Fix #1. Written by Garth Ennis and art by Mike Perkins. Todd has been looking for this one for quite awhile for me, and he was finally able to get his hands on it. It has a cover quote from Stephen King saying, “It’s Crazy Good!” Part of the Ninth Circle imprint from Image, this was a fun story with a “fixer” in Hollywood trying to fix things for the monsters that worked in Hollyweird… and I mean monsters literally. Lots of fun.

Redcoat #9. Creators: Geoff Johns & Bryan Hitch. Variant cover B art was done by Mark Buckingham & John Kalisz. We get a brand new character to interact with Simon Pure. A flashback issue featuring Johnny Appleseed. This was another really good comic from this Ghost Machine imprint of Image.

Blood Train #1. Written by Adam Glass and art by Bernard Chang. Another one shot issue from Ninth Circle, Blood Train reminded me very much of the Korean movie Train from Busan. A train and a virus that can turn someone into a creature… always a great story.

Mark Spears Monsters #3. Written, drawn and cover art by Mark Spears (Gold, Silver and Bronze Medalist). This book became the first sweep winner of the Favorite Cover of the Week for Mark Spears, with the Jaws cover winning going away. It is a beautiful cover. I love this series too as the fun with monsters continues.

The Seasons #1. Written by Rick Remender and art and cover art by Paul Azaceta. I am not sure what I thought about this book. It was a very strange book involving characters named after the seasons. This kind of reminded me of the Disney short Paperman.

Sherlock Holmes: The Dark Detective #3. “Arena of Darkness” Written by Christopher Sequeira and art by Philip Cornell. Sherlock and Watson seemed to have solved the Chimera mystery in this issue… so much that I thought this was the final issue, though the cover says that there will be a fourth issue.

Sam and Twitch: Case Files #10. Written by Jordan Barel & Todd McFarlane and art by Thomas Nachlik. Cover art by Jim Muniz & Jonathan Glapion. The case of Twitch’s officer shooting is getting even stranger than it was before. This new storyline is very interesting.

Hello Darkness #7. The other regular horror anthology series. Hello Darkness has been consistently good with some of the short stories inside being actually outstanding. My favorite in this issue was titled “Evermore,” written by David hazan and illustrated by Stefano Nesi.

Other books this week: FML #3, Book of Cutter #1, Knights vs. Samurai #5, Black Cloak #11, and Blood Squad Seven #6.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man S1 E1, E2

Spoilers

“Amazing Fantasy”

“The Parker Luck”

There is no fictional character that means more to me than Peter Parker. I have spent my entire life loving Spider-Man. He has been an inspiration to me and my own core beliefs come from him. Every time I see a new Spider-Man project, I am both excited and a little nervous.

Nervous because there is always a chance that the project will be bad. I have gone through that a few times. And to be honest, seeing the initial images from Disney +’s new Spider-Man series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, I was a little more nervous than usual.

However, after seeing the first two episodes of season one, my fears were alleviated. I loved these episodes. Even though the show did take some leeway with some things, YFNSM seemed to get the flavor, the tone of Spider-Man right.

One of the original issues I was afraid of was the animation style, but as the episode continued, it did not bother me at all. In fact, i think it worked very well with the character of Spider-Man.

I thought the show was funny and gave us a real good look at this Peter Parker, which is MCU-adjacent. While there are definitely connections to the MCU (Hey there, Left Hand Free), the differences are here too. It sure appears that Norman Osborn is going to be the Tony Stark figure in Peter’s life as the scene in Peter’s apartment with Aunt May was basically reenacted with Norman in Tony Stark’s place.

I love the balls this series is showing. I could tell immediately that there would be plenty of hatred on the internet because of certain “woke” items. I hate that term, by the way. When I first saw Harry in the first episode, I knew there would be some hate-spewers coming for this show. The gender swapping of Curt Connors will surely get some ignorant comments too. Fine. None of that bothered me.

Even the spider bite did not upset me. It certainly was different than any other version of Spider-Man, but that is not a bad thing. The spider was not from Oscorp in the original comics, yet the we’ve seen that happen in other Spider-Man versions.

The choice of Nico as Peter’s friend is intriguing. I have always enjoyed this character in the different comics. The football player is not Flash Thompson, but Lonnie Lincoln, who, by the way, we know from the comics as Tombstone. Amadeus Cho, a Shuri-like Wakandan also show up. The side cast is very eclectic. Great Dr. Strange cameo too.

Spider-Man has had some awesome animated series in the past with the 1990s Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man, but it also had some shows that felt way too childish. I was concerned this would fall into that category like Ultimate Spider-Man. After the first two episodes, I feel as if those fears have been put to rest. It may not be in the same range as those first two I mentioned, but I think this has some real room to grow.
