I have actually been expanding my reading beyond just Marvel this year, mainly because my comic shop people keep making me read these books that keep ending up great. Here are my Top 7 Non-Marvel Comics of the Year.
#7. Far Sector (DC Comics). A new take on the Green Lantern character and a mystery all rolled into one. There is a crime committed in a sector of space where there had not been a crime for centuries and we get a new GL to investigate.
#6. Family Tree (Image). This one just started and it is a very interesting first issue. It is also one that I picked up on my own without any encouragement from Ben or Todd.
#5. Undiscovered Country (Image). This is another one that just started, which is why it is down this list. Issue number one was completely engaging, creating a new world that is as interesting as any setting around.
#4. Batman/Superman (DC Comics). The Batman Who Laughs storyline has been invading this series and it has been epic. I have enjoyed the interactions between Bats and Supes.
#3. Sea of Stars (Image). A father and son get separated in space and they must find their way back to each other. However, there is more going on than just that. Well written by Jason Aaron, the space adventure has been very trippy.
#2. Harleen (DC Black). A new take on the origin of Harley Quinn, Harleen has been exceptional with each of the over sized issues.
#1. Something is Killing the Children (Boom!). This is just a tremendous book. In fact, it is one of the first books I read when it is in my pull box. The horror comic is filled with a mystery, monsters and some great dialogue. The characters involved are compelling and fascinating and the story just flies along. Brilliant work from James Tynion IV, Werther Dell’edera and Miquel Muerto. Haunting images in each issue.
