The Cloverfield Paradox

I was watching the Super Bowl Sunday night and enjoying the release of the new movie trailers coming during the commercials. Then, there was a trailer for a new Cloverfield film on Netflix. Cool.  I didn’t know that Netflix was going to have a new Cloverfield movie, The Cloverfield Paradox.  I was a fan of the first two films so I was excited to see the new film whenever it would come out.  Then the news broke.  It was debuting on Netflix that night, as soon as the Super Bowl was over.

Absolutely brilliant.

As a marketing ploy, this idea was pure genius.  Tease a popular film franchise’s next entry in the series in front of the biggest viewing audience of the year, and then roll it out immediately afterward.  Just brilliant.

So I, like I am sure many people, at the end of the Super Bowl, made my way to Netflix to watch the movie.

It was okay.

Again, I am sure that this stunt brought way more eyes on The Cloverfield Paradox than ever would have seen it in any other way.  Certainly, if this film had been released in the theaters, there would be a much greater chance that it was going to fail.  Here, Netflix introduced a brand new way to present their material.  It was a monumental way to maximize the release.

The film was an okay, fairly unoriginal science fiction story that featured pieces from other science fiction movies that we have seen before such as Life and Event Horizon.  Much like 10 Cloverfield Lane, there is little connecting this movie to the original film until an image at the very end.  In fact, it could easily have been filmed as a completely different movie and made to fit the idea of Cloverfield after filming was over.

The crew of the Shepard i in orbit around earth in search of a new source of energy for a planet struggling to find energy and on the brink of war over it.  The crew has plenty of questions about each other, doubting the motives of crew members.  Lead by Hamilton (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the crew ignited the controversial Shepard in an attempt to save the earth.  However, shockingly, when the space station stops, it seems as if the earth is gone.

The cast of this film is pretty strong.  Mbatha-Raw does a great job leading the cast as Hamilton.  We also get Daniel Brühl as Schmidt, David Oyelowo as Kiel, Chris O’Dowd as Mundy and John Ortiz as Monk.  Each of these actors bring a strength to the role that helps to elevate the material higher than it might have been with  lesser actors.

The story has some good elements to it.  I found myself compelled enough to stay up and watch it after the Super Bowl.  True, some of the science fiction elements are not explained much, but that did not bother me much.  In fact, much of the previous Cloverfield movies lacked some explanation so it did not bother me.  When a severed armed started writing on its own, I did not find it a problem.  I actually thought that was neat and had some of the funnier moments of the film.

I will admit that the film has a definite feel of a B movie, and not a film that you might see in the theaters.  It feels like it found an appropriate home on Netflix. I know that Netflix is wanting to move into more serious movies, and this one would be a step back from, say Mudbound.  However, if I found entertainment here, albeit, not a ton of depth.

In the end, as a fan of the previous Cloverfield movies, I have given this a pass.  Not only because I enjoyed watching it for the most part but also because the fact that Netflix may have changed the way business is done.

The TV Week That Was

spoilers

Welcome to a late arriving TV Week That Was.

Of course, the reason the column is late is because last night was the Super Bowl.  The Philadelphia Eagles defeated The New England Patriots 41-33 in an entertaining offensive struggle between two of the top offensive teams in the NFL.  Nick Foles, the Eagles QB who was a backup as late as Week 11, was the game’s MVP.  Foles replaced potential league MVP Carson Wentz after he injured his ACL.  Foles struggled at the end of the regular season, but he had really stepped up in the playoffs.

The commercials of the Super Bowl were another let down this year, but there were a ton of awesome movie trailers that were shown during the big game.  We got trailers for Mission Impossible 6, Avengers Infinity War, Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Rock’s Skyscraper, Annihilation, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and the surprise release of The Cloverfield Paradox on Netflix (which dropped as soon as the game ended.)

triplethreat.pngThis week saw the return of the Movie Trivia Schmoedown on Collider Video on YouTube.  The first match was a Triple Threat Number One Contender match between “Little Evil” JTE, Rachel “The Crusher” Cushing, and Mike “K.O.” Kalinowski.  Rachel Cushing won the match in dominant fashion, knocking out Kalinowski and TKOing JTE.  Rachel earned a championship match against current Movie Trivia Schmoedown Champion Samm Levine.  The video also saw the long anticipated announcement of Rachel’s new partner, “Classy” Clarke Wolfe in the new team to be called Shirewolves.

This week’s X-Files was one of the best episodes of the new season.  “Ghouli” focused on a monster of the week story, or, at least, that is what it seemed.  However, it turned out that the person that Mulder and Scully wound up chasing was their son, William, whom they put up for adoption years before.  William, who was known as Jackson, had some kind of mental illusion ability that can cause people to see things that were not there.  This was an emotional episode and brought a light on the mysterious son of Mulder(?) and Scully.

Image result for agents of shield season 5 episode 10Agents of SHIELD brought the Kree battle in the future to a satisfactory ending as Flint helped create a new monolith to be able to send the Agents back in time.  Of course this was not before Yo Yo found Kasius’s seer and discovered that it was an older version of her.  Older Yo Yo spoke to younger Yo Yo and implied that this moment had happened many times in the past, implying that the future was set in a loop.  She also said that everything happened because they saved “him” and that this time they had to let him die.  Older Yo Yo said that Coulson was dying and they had to let him die.

Image result for nathan west diesGeneral Hospital had an emotional week as police detective Nathan West was shot and killed by Cesar Faison, a man Nathan just learned was his biological father.  Ryan Paevey had chosen to leave the show so the popular character who was married to Maxie Jones, found himself being killed in the line of duty.  The General Hospital ensemble cast is very powerful and everyone brought their top game with these emotional episodes.  Faison became another victim of the week as he died from complications of a gunshot from Jason Morgan.

Image result for riverdale season 2 episode 12Riverdale has been slipping in my opinion as of late.  After a less than stellar first half of the season with the Black Hood, the last couple of episodes have been pretty low.  Characters constantly do things that make no sense or do not fit the characters that we have grown to know of over the first season and a half.  The whole Archie is being used by the FBI is ridiculous.  Jughead and his obsession with the Serpents brings about some of the worst written sections of the show.  Archie seems to be fine with the Lodges and their connection to organized crime.  None of it works.  I will say that it was nice to see Betty and Jughead back together, despite their break up being short and not believable.  Riverdale needs to start improving or it is in danger of falling back off of my viewing habits.

Image result for scandal the interventionScandal continued its final season with an attempt by Olivia’s friends to hold an intervention for her and get her to admit her wrong doings.  They took her to Vermont and held her prisoner for a few days.  Of course, in the end, Olivia outsmarted the entire crew and got herself back to Washington.  Meanwhile, President Millie was discovering the truth behind Olivia and B613.  Mellie struggled with what exactly she wanted to do to reestablish her own power as President of the United States.  At the end of the episode, it looked like Mellie had decided as Olivia’s things were being moved from out of her office.

Happy viewing.

Winchester

“Inspired by true events.”

What exactly do these words mean?  In this case, the words indicated that there is a real house, in San Jose, California, like the one in the movie that Sarah Winchester was continuously adding on to during her life.  It has a reputation of being haunted.

That would be it.

Not that there is anything wrong with taking that bit of true events and fictionalizing it into a horror movie.  Heck, I would even go as far as to say that the concept itself is very solid.  The Winchester mansion has all kinds of weird rooms, with stairs leading nowhere and creepy atmosphere.  The lay out of the house indicates the possibility of the madness of the owner.

None of that is covered effectively.  This house, which should have been the most important character in the movie, was really neglected for cheap jump scares and cliched horror movie tropes.

Dr. Eric Price (Jason Clarke), a drug-addicted yet famous psychologist, is hired by the Winchester company to travel to see Winchester heiress Sarah (Helen Mirren) and to perform a psychological test on her.  Price has his own share of problems that he brings along with him to the haunted house.  Immediately, there are things that he hears and sees that he has a difficult time coming to grips with.  Meanwhile, obsessively controlling Sarah will only speak to him under certain specific circumstances.

Eventually, we discover that Sarah believes that the house is being haunted by the angry spirits of those victims of the Winchester gun, and she has been building this house to help contain or allow the ghosts to move on.

There could have been some real psychological horror here.  They had set up this woman to be completely mad and behind much of her own pain, and they have some real potential in the character of Dr. price, whose own demons could be used in this situation.  Neither of these are effectively used.

Both Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke are okay in these roles, but I really expected to see the acting elevate the material, especially int he case of the great Dame Mirren.  That did not happen here.  They were fine.  That’s about it.

The story itself was non-existent more much of the film and it was downright boring for a good chunk of it.  There are so any things that are tossed out there without any sufficient follow up that it felt like a patchwork of a story.  And because of that, the film neglected the story that it should have focused on.

Worst part yet was the film was all jump scares.  Honestly, jump scares are so easy and this film chose to use them instead of going into any expansive story elements.  And these jump scares were so ridiculously obvious that they lost a lot of their effectiveness.  There is one scene where Dr. Price is moving a little mirror back and forth and you knew something was going to show up and try to scare us.  It moved a couple of times before finally settling on the “scary” creature that made Dr. Price jump.  There were also the typical loud bursts of music meant to jolt the audience.  I actually appreciated those jolts as they snapped me back awake a couple of times.

This movie took all of the fascinating parts that could have created a new and different horror movie, and tossed them away to have a simple and repetitive haunted house movie like all the others we have seen so many times before.  And even worse, the film wasted a strong cast including an Academy Award winner in Helen Mirren.

I did not even go into the magic bullet of love.

EYG Top 10 70s Movies

EYG23

Okay, what an insane topic.

This week’s Top10 Show with John Rocha and Matt Knost featured a guest star, a friend of Matt’s, but also a character actor, writer etc named Wayne Federman.

Image result for wayne federman

It is an impossible topic, by the way, to find the Top 10 List of 70s Movies.  Yes, that is what I said… 70s Movies.  An entire decade of films to choose.  The other issue was a lot of these movies are films that I have heard of, seen parts of, but never seen the whole film, so there are some missing films from my list.

Image result for smokey and the bandit#10.  Smokey and the Bandit.  A personal favorite that probably should not be on a list like this, but it is a guilty pleasure and I wanted to add it.  Burt Reynolds, Jerry Reed and Sally Field as our beer runners and Jackie Gleason himself as Sheriff Buford T. Justice, the most dedicated hick cop of all time.  Smokey and the Bandit is redneck fun and, albeit a silly film, I love it.

Related image#9.  Alien.  One of the great science fiction movies of all time and a film that spawned an amazing series of films and one of the greatest, baddest female heroes of cinematic history in Ripley.  Then, the creature that is to be known as a Xenomorph is tremendously scary and fear inducing.  Alien is a great film with some serious horror elements to it as well.

Image result for close encounters of the third kind#8.  Close Encounters of the Third Kind.  One of Steven Spielberg’s great early films, Close Encounters brings the nation’s fascination with aliens and UFOs into the movies once again.  This time, the film focuses on how the hysteria surrounding UFOs could affect a human being. Richard Dreyfus seemingly loses his mind after his close encounter and it ends up costing him his relationship with his family.  However, in the end, he does get to step upon the space ship and head into a new adventure.  There is so much beauty in the film, from the way it is shot to the iconic music.  Close Encounters is wonderful.

Image result for rocky#7.  Rocky.  Rocky Balboa was the ultimate underdog.  In his chase of Apollo Creed, Rocky had to put everything on the line.  In the end, the Italian Stallion just could not overcome the champ.  Who thought Rocky would lose?  It’s a surprise at the end that really makes this an uncommon sports film.  Sylvester Stallone became a household name because of this film, a film he wrote and directed and starred in.  Most of these film have that iconic score to them as well, helping secure their place above the other films of the giant decade.  Rocky’s theme is known by everyone and it helps create the character and the feeling of the film.

Related image#6.  The Godfather. I have actually not seen Godfather 2.  I know.. I know.  Truthfully, I just saw Godfather last year during a Fathom Event.  There is nothing I can add to the limitless discussions of this movie.  The Godfather is a masterpiece of a film in style and substance.  The acting is amazing.  The music is perfect.  There are so many key storytelling elements that continue to keep people coming back to the story of Don Corleone.

Image result for "What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?"#5.  Monty Python and the Holy Grail.  Here come some of the films that might not make some people’s lists, but I love so they are here.  Monty Python and the Holy Grail is amazingly quotable and continually funny. “It’s just a flesh wound.”  “I’m feeling better now”.  What… is your favorite color?– “Blue…. no, yel–aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh”  “What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?”  Of course, there is also the classic Black Knight and the Knights who say Ni.  My favorite of the Monty Python movies.

Image result for young frankenstein#4. Young Frankenstein.  Puttin’ on the Ritz.  This is one of my absolutely favorite scenes in movie history.  Gene Wilder putting on a fantastic show as Dr. Frank-en-stein, the grandson of Victor.  He was successful in re-animating life from dead tissue and the brain of someone by the name of Abby Normal.  LOL.  Igor and his moving hump.  The Frau Blücher -WHINNNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.  Young Frankenstein is one of Mel Brooks greatest films and works to this very day.

Image result for willy wonka#3.  Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.  One of my favorite movies of all time.  Willy Wonka has great music, a awesome story that is darker than one would think when first viewing it. It seems like a kids movie, but this is anything but.  There is a subversiveness about Willy Wonka and his Chocolate Factory that weds out the bad little girls and boys and rewards those who can follow his rules.  We never see Augustus, Violet, Veruca, and Mike again, do we?  We are TOLD that they will be fine, but Willy Wonka does not seem to be the most legitimate source.  Gene Wilder’s iconic performance highlights this brilliant film.

Image result for star wars#2.  Star Wars.  Out of respect for the guest this week, Wayne Federman, I will only refer to this as Star Wars.  This film that led to the greatest franchise of films ever put together, Star Wars was truly a simple story.  A story of a boy in search of a family, a father and a purpose.  Luke Skywalker found all three by joining the Rebellion against the evil Empire.  Yes, we do not know yet that Darth Vader is, in actuality, Luke’s father, but there is certainly enough drama to hold the viewers attention.  We meet the awesome character of Han Solo.  Princess Leia.  Obi-Wan.  R2D2 and C3PO.  The Millennium Falcon.  It goes on and on.

Image result for jaws#1.  Jaws.  One of my favorite movies of all time.  I remember being scared out of my mind as a kid by Jaws, especially at the scene where the shark is slowly eating Quint.  That scared me silly.  Now a days, I love the scene with Quint, Brody and Hooper drinking below deck and comparing scars.  This led to a completely compelling tale spun by Hooper about the USS Indianapolis.  Jaws is a horror film that becomes an adventure film that end with a fantastically intense final act.  It is a near perfect movie and it is my favorite 1970s movie.

The TV Week That Was

spoilers

Yesterday was packed full of fun, so the TV Week That Was had to be delayed until a Monday night.  But here we are!

royalrumblewinnersLast night saw the Royal Rumble PPV on the WWE Network.  The first ever all-female Royal Rumble main evented the show with “The Empress of Tomorrow” Asuka winning.  The male version was won by Smackdown star Shinsuke Nakamura.  Shinsuke then announced that he would be challenging WWE Champion A.J. Styles at Wrestlemania, which is a huge match.  Other major winners last night included The Usos retaining their Smackdown Tag Team Championship, The Bar regaining the RAW Tag Team Championship by defeated Seth Rollins and Jason Jordon, A.J. Styles defeated Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn in an handicap match to retain the WWE Championship, and Brock Lesnar pinned Kane in the triple Threat match with Kane and Braun Strowman.  Then, at the end of the night, a surprise came out from the back to make a challenge for Wrestlemania.  Rhonda Rousey came out and pointed to the Wrestlemania sign.  Social media then indicated that Rousey had signed full time with the WWE. The women main evented the PPV and this was a great way to go off the air.  We are officially on the Road to Wrestlemania.

There was more wrestling this week as Monday Night RAW turned 25 years old and presented its bog show with a lot of nostalgia and not much else.  Stone Cold Steve Austin came back to stun Vince McMahon once again.  The APA played poker.  The Undertaker made an appearance.  DX made an appearance.  Match wise there was not that much.  Miz defeated Roman Reigns and became the Intercontinental Championship once again.  Honestly, the show was a bit lackluster for how big the show was promoted to be. Thankfully the Royal Rumble delivered more.

And delivering even more after that was NXT Takeover: Philadelphia.  Saturday night prior to a big WWE PPV brings us the epic NXT card.  We had a brilliant Extreme Rules match between Adam Cole (BABEEEE) and Alastair Black, won by Black.  Just as people were getting ready to dub this the match of the night, out came NXT Champion Andrade “Cien” Almas took on Johnny “Johnny Wrestling” Gargano.  This 31 minute match was one of the best NXT matches of all time and is easily your January leader for match of the year.  It was simple epic.  Almas held off Gargano and defeated him to retain his title.

Netflix dropped the first episode of David Letterman’s new show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman. Letterman, the iconic late night TV show host, spent 50 minutes interviewing former President Barack Obama.  Letterman had not missed a step as he was extremely interesting discussing all sorts of specifics with President Obama.  The gigantic beard on Letterman’s face is hard to take your eyes off of, admittedly, but these two had me fascinated the entire time  Next up is George Clooney.

The Flash SpoilersI gave Flash another chance this week, and I liked what I saw more than I did with the Trial of Flash.  Bill Goldberg guest starred as a felon who Barry met and bonded with.  Apparently, Goldberg was someone who owed a favor to Barry’s father.  However, the best part of the episode was the elevation of Ralph Digby from joke sidekick to full fledged super hero. The Elongated Man, which turns out to be a better name than Stretchy Man, was the best part of the show.

Scandal revealed that, as expected, Rowan did not shoot Quinn after all.  She has given birth to her son and fought her way out of the basement being.  I was pretty disappointed by this as it just felt like the typical bait and switch and it underplays the entire emotions from last week’s solid episode.  There was a lot of flashback and showing us scenes that we had already seen, but maybe just slightly in a different perspective.  These characters are just lost to me at this point.  Olivia is gone dark side without chance to be saved, in my opinion.  Rowan is well past due time for a bullet in his head.

General Hospital brought back one of their most compelling villains of all time and unleashed him on Port Charles for a few weeks.  Cesar Faison, played by Anders Hove, showed us why he is continually brought back.  He was an amazingly intense and vicious character, terrorizing Anna Devane, Lulu Spencer, Maxie and, his surprise son, Nathan.  Cesar shot Nathan before he knew who he was.  Thankfully, Jason was there to intercept Faison, who had taken Carly hostage.  Faison told Jason that he couldn’t make the shot… which Jason did, of course.  Jason wants answers about his twin brother that, apparently, Faison had something to do with it.

Image result for x files mulder as a child on his couchDisturbing was on display on the X-Files this week as we saw young Mulder on a couch enjoying his Twilight Zone was not.  The episode was actually quite a funny one, but this shot of Mulder as a child watching TV was just about as silly as anything you will see on TV.

Image result for agents of shield season 5 episode 9Agents of SHIELD is great each week.  This week was a dramatic and emotional one as Robin, the young girl seer from the past, was now an old woman, who has secrets to reveal.  One of those was that May raised her after something happened to her mother.  When Robin is killed, there is nary a dry eye int he house.  Sinara also comes down to the surface of the destroyed planet (was it really Quake?  not sure)and winds up biting the big one.  Plus, Mack, Yo Yo and Flint’s rebellion against Kasius seems to be going well, but I guess Kasius still has a seer.  Oh, and by the way, he brought back to life Tess.  Agents of Shield is driving toward their 100th episode and it is a joy-ride each week.

There is more I could write, but I am tired and getting ready to go to bed.  So I will skip Speechless, Child Support (new game show), Match Game, Black Lightning (a good 2nd episode), How to Get Away with Murder, the Schmoedown Awards (have a blog post about that) or Movie Fights Live.

Next week:  The new season of Movie Trivia Schmoedown starts on Friday with a triple threat #1 contenders match.  I have to catch back up with Riverdale.  Oh, and there is a little game called the Super Bowl.

Happy viewing.

The Shape of Water

I do believe this is the final of the movies released in limited release for Oscar consideration, and it is the best one as well.

I loved The Shape of Water, finally getting to see it.  It would have found its way into the top 5 of 2017 had I been able to see it before.

Guillermo del Toro brings his style to this beautiful story into something magical and legendary.  In the secret facility, mute Elisa (Sally Hawkins) works as a cleaning woman but something unbelievable happens.  Government agent Richard Strickland (Michael Strickland) has brought something to the facility, some kind of Amphibian Man (Doug Jones) monster to be studied and researched.

Elisa found herself drawn to the Amphibian Man and she sneaks him eggs and plays him music.  Meanwhile, Strickland is getting anxious for answers and information and begins pushing for dissection.  That forces Elisa, along with a doctor at the facility (Michael Stuhlbarg), to try something desperate.

The Shape of Water is magic and you can feel the magic.  There have been few films that have this kind of tone/feel.  It is almost palpable.

Performances are top notch.  Not only from Sally Hawkins, who is remarkable, and Michael Shannon, who is scary intense, but also from Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins, who play secondary characters.  I would even go as far as to say that I loved the original and quirky Richard Jenkins as Giles, Elisa’s friend.

The design of the Amphibian Man is amazing and has so many little idiosyncrasies that you would probably notice different ones each time you see it.  Doug Jones does a great job as the monster, showing as much emotion as he could without the ability to speak.

This is, of course, a key connection between the two of them since neither of them can use words to speak.  The love story is the single most important aspect and it really does work.  I did not think it would, but it was wonderful.

The music of the film is as important as the cinematography and the acting.  The music plays a huge role in the connections between characters and the imagery of the film.  I will say, I am not convince that the “dance” song near the end worked or fit very well.  That might be my only criticism of the film.

The Shape of Water was well worth the wait.  This was an amazing and magical time at the movies.  It made you feel as if this was an old time story with the beautiful expertise of today’s world.  I loved it.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure

The third and expected final movie in the Maze Runner trilogy was released this weekend after a troubled and difficult path.  The dangerous, but thankfully not fatal, accident that befell movie star Dylan O’Brien caused the film to be delayed, but the young actor looked great back on the screen.

In the third installment, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) is desperately trying to find a way to save his friends and the world from the deadly disease known as “The Flare.”  Meanwhile, the forces of WCKD are trying to do the same thing, but in extremely different ways.  WCKD head Janson (Aidan Gillen) is trying to capture every immune child in the world so they can use them as lab rats to solve the disease.  Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), Thomas’s old love and betrayer, works in the lab hoping to find the cure.

So with Thomas’s close friend Minho (Ki Hong Lee) captured by WCKD, Thomas and the rebels look to save him from his future.

I kind of liked the first Maze Runner movie, but I really disliked the Scorch Trials film, so the third film could go in either direction.  Ironically, that is exactly what it did.

The first hour or so of The Death Cure was boring.  I was not engaged and I found myself wishing the film would get over.  I was not involved with the characters and the storyline felt flat and familiar.

Then, the last hour and a half or so, the film really picked up its pace, became exciting and engaging and really improved.

So the film was really split into two sections.  One good and one bad.  Once they got through the first section of the film, I did enjoy it much more.  The action was better and the characters became more important to me.   It was still predictable but it was considerably better than the first hour.

In the end, my decision with recommendation or not sticks with one major scene that stuck with me the remainder of the film.  And to talk about it, I need to mention that this section is SPOILERS

At one point, Thomas and Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) undercover, escorting Teresa into WCKD in search of Minko.  They are in an elevator when Janson holds up the elevator and gets in and begins having a conversation with Teresa.  He had no idea who was standing directly behind him in the riot gear.  I immediately said to myself, “Shoot him in the head.”  Of course, Thomas does not do that, and not too longer after that Janson had figured it out. The opportunity was missed and I could not get past the fact that everything else wouldn’t have happened or could have been avoided with one easy pull of the trigger.  That plot hole made me question the rest of what happened.

I did like this better, much better, than the Scorch Trials, which was a serious misstep, but this did not reach the levels of number one.  The trilogy was reasonably finished , so let’s see if this is the end.

Hostiles

I’ve been sick the last part of this week so I was not sure what I was going to be able to handle today.  However, I was feeling considerably better so I went off to see one of the wide releases of the weekend which was actually one of the movies released in December for Oscar consideration, Hostiles.

Since this was the new film from Scott Cooper, the director behind Crazy Heart, Black Mass, and Out of the Furnace, I could guess one thing.  The film was going to be dark, potentially depressing and slow moving.  Thing was, I really liked this movie and did not find these traits (which Hostiles definitely has) to be a drawback.

The year is 1892, and Captain Joe Blacker (Christian Bale) is a Union Calvary man nearing the end of his career.  He has been known as a brutally vicious soldier in battle, with a rep for killing Indians.  When ordered by Col. Abraham Biggs (Stephen Lang) to escort Chief Yellow Hawk (Wes Studi), a Cheyenne who was also a brutal killer, and his family from New Mexico back to their homelands in Montana, Joe balks.

Joe had a past with Chief Yellow Hawk, who slit the throats and scalped three of Joe’s close friends.  Joe refuses the order, threatening to take whatever punishment dealt to him.  After some struggle, Col. Biggs convinced Joe, who knew the paths and had experience in the area and was the only one who would be able lead this troop, that he had no choice.

As the group were on the trail to Montana, they came across a burned down home of Rosalie Quaid, who was mourning the death of her family at the hands of a particularly vicious group of Comanche.  Rosalie seemed to be in shock and appeared to be “broken.”  Still, she allows them to bury her family and she accompanies them on the trip.

But the hazards of 1892 wilderness was just getting started as we see continual horrors show up from all areas of the world.

I really enjoyed this movie.  I did not think it felt slow a I have heard some criticize it.  I enjoyed the early parts where we saw character interactions between Joe and Rosalie, Joe and Chief, as well as the interactions with the Cheyenne tribe members.  There were some interesting secondary characters who got all too little time to shine as well.

Both Christian Bale and Rosalind Pike are tremendous in their roles, and I really enjoyed what they gave to Wes Studi as well.  These three characters had to be the strongest of the group since these were easily the ones that the film was centered around.  In fact, one of the film’s weaknesses was that they did not develop the other secondary characters enough. Heck, Timothee Chalamet was in this movie for a hot second.

The fact that we did not get to know these characters better hurt the film.  There was one scene where someone dies and I did not know who it was.  I kept looking through the cast after the scene, trying to figure out who was gone.  Never figured it out.

The other problem I had with the film was it seemed as if Joe and the Chief changed perspectives on each other really quickly.  I understand that the necessity to team up was there, but Joe had protested so much earlier that it did not feel right and that made the ending feel as if it was not earned.

However, that was the only criticisms I had for the film.  In fact, the rest of the relationship between Joe and the Chief was great.  The idea that these two characters are the same character, just from different worlds was fascinating to me.  It wasn’t the theme of the white man persecuted the Native Americans and treated them horribly like so many films use.  It is also not that the Native Americans were savages and needed to be killed. It was both.  It was a theme that any man, depending on POV, can commits acts of good or evil.  You had Joe and the Chief both clearly solid, heroic men who had done many atrocities in their lives and they had to deal with what those acts made them.

Rosalind Pike’s arc was exceptional as well as she went from mourning widow to woman determined to continue.  We see different variations of other characters along this same arc, which is why it would be nice to have had more with those other characters than what we got.

The film was beautifully shot and the exterior scenes brought the audience right into the world with the characters.  There was an extended rain scene that was something else.  I kept wondering if that rain was ever going to stop.

Again, this film is not as much about the anger between white man and the Indians as it is the internal struggle of humans to decide what they are willing to do and how they can live with that decision.  The film was long but it never felt like it.  As I said, I was sick this week and have not slept well so I worried about dozing off in the middle of this one.  It did not happen, even once.  The film captivated me from the beginning and, with the few exceptions about wanting more form the characters, I did not have much to complain about.

Schmoedown Awards

title card

There will be spoilers in this article for the 2017 Movie Trivia Schmoedown Awards Show so if you have not yet seen it, please give yourself a treat, go watch it, and then come back.

One of the most consistently entertaining program on YouTube is the Movie Trivia Schmoedown, on Collider Video.  The brainchild for the series came from creators Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis, known collectively as The Schmoes.  They have created a movie trivia league using the backstage concepts and storylines like that of the WWE and UFC.

The show is currently in its off season with season five scheduled to begin on Friday, February 2nd with a triple threat number one contenders match between Rachel Cushing, JTE and Mike Kalinowski for the right to take on Movie Trivia Schmoedown Champion Samm Levine.

But that is in the future.  Today, Collider dropped a video dedicated to the past, the past year that is.  They gave us an awards show, the 2017 Movie Trivia Schmoedown Awards.

ModokA list of categories were voted on by members of the Movie Trivia Schmoedown Facebook page.  I am unsure if this was the sole voting or if there were more included.

The show was a spoof on the award shows as well.  There were some pre-show interviews with several of the competitors and presenters.  Collider writer and on-screen personality, Perri Nemiroff handling the interviews.  The highlight was clearly the hat shaped like a hand worn by Grae Drake from team Modok, who presented an award later in the show.

babycarrotsIt started with a monologue from host Mark Ellis, and he roasted several of the competitors with his funny zings.  Ellis is a stand up comedian who has great timing and a sharp wit and his monologue was vastly entertaining…almost as entertaining as the orange suit he was wearing.  The audience was filled with a large group of the members of the league as well as some notable podcasters and actors.

They presented a series of awards through the 2 and a half + hour show.  Those awards include the following:

Singles Entrance of the Year:  Rachel “The Crusher” Cushing, “Lord of the Rings”

Team Entrance of the Year:  The Wolves of Steel, “It movie”

Innergeekdom/Star Wars Player of the Year: Jason “Justice” Inman

Upset of the Year:  Late to the Party defeated Critically Acclaimed.

Podcast/Aftershow of the Year:  Schmoedown Rundown

Manager of the Year: Tom Dagnino of the Lion’s Den

Heel Team of the Year:  Team Action

Team Babyface of the Year:  Above the Line

Heel of the Year:  Tom Dagnino

Babyface of the Year: Rachel “The Crusher” Cushing

The Yodi Award:  Mark “Yodi” Reilly

Celebrity Match of the Year:  The It Losers Club match

Rookie Team of the Year: Above the Line

Singles Rookie of the Year: Rachel “The Crusher” Cushing

Comeback Player of the Year: JTE

Moment of the Year:  Marc Andreyko cleared the table at the Free 4 All.

Match of the Year:  Sam Witwer vs. Ken Napzok, Star Wars Iron Man Match

Team of the Year:  The Patriots

Singles Player of the Year: Samm Levine

Overall Player of the Year: Samm Levine

Thoughts:

babyfaceRachel Cushing was a highlight of the night for sure.  Everybody expected her to win the Rookie of the Year, because she was clearly the standout of the group (heck Lon Harris was in the category with only one game played).  However, she also won the singles entrance of the year and the Babyface of the Year.  According to the presenter Ken Napzok, “the term ‘babyface’ comes from the great American art form of professional wrestling.  It is a term that describes the people that connect with the audience, that inspire the audience, that chase their dreams and chase down gold.”  Rachel cemented this position late in 2017 napzokwhen Napzok himself turned on her and left her to face the team of Blofeld’s Cat by herself.  The Crusher nearly pulled the upset in the handicap match.  That match took Rachel to another level.  She is not yet a champion, but I cannot believe that she won’t hold some championship in 2018.

inmemorumThey ran an In Memoriam section, again as a spoof of the award show.  This section is presented by Screen Junkie Hal Rudnick, dressed in black.  Rudnick was hilarious here, talking about the things we will never hear about again… including no one talking about their podcasts, uploading spoiler free reviews, getting their opinions on a still photograph, and whose Loot Crate mash up Tees we’ll never see again.  They then rolled a clip video featuring mainly teams that have been broken up (Megapowers, Etc, Six Degrees, Nerd Watch), teams who have changed their team name (Modok, IGN), and other fun things such as JTE’s Losing Streak, Fantasy Updates, Finstock, the old wheel and ending with the Dark Universe.  Solute those fallen warriors!

jaywashJay Washington presenting the Moment of the Year (with Stacy Howard), after losing several awards himself showed his talent at the mike.  A former pro wrestler, Jay Washington is very comfortable doing the promos, and this was one of the best speaking moments of the show.  Jay has slowly began getting more air time and he is delivering entertainment each time.  Jay Washington could be one of the break out stars of the next year because he knows how to create, sustain and develop a character.

nocomebackJTE was full of vinegar this year.  After he won the Comeback Player of the Year Award, he threw it down to the ground, claiming that the award would only remind him of the bad year.  He said that all his losses were really close and that he was not a loser.  Following this, JTE was as arrogant as you could be when the Patriots won the Team of the Year.  As JTE said, “We sammlevinesingleplayerwon, big f***ing surprise.”  JTE was then announced by “The Outlaw” John Rocha as the winner of the Singles Player of the Year, but (spoofing the La La Land incident from last year) it was actually Samm Levine who won.  Then, when Samm Levine won the Overall Player of the Year, JTE raged about the unfairness of the situation.

realwildberriesThe Wildberries made some great appearances in the awards show.  This fairly new team looks to be a huge team in the upcoming year.  Here, they presented the celebrity match of the year (The It Losers Club) and they spent several minutes yelling about everything.  They were really funny and these two seem to really be embracing these characters.

KoMissMoviesThere are some moments here that are being teased for season five.  You can see some of the new characters (such as Lon Harris) beginning to see some screen time.  Perhaps the biggest storyline was hinted at with Mike “K.O.” Kalinowski and “Miss Movies” Brianne Chandler arriving together after leaving the Schmoedown Spectacular 2 together.  There was nothing new presented, but it is clear this will be a major storyline moving forward.

dagninoOh, and Tom Dagnino is gold.  Evil gold, but gold, nonetheless.

The Movie Trivia Schmoedown continues to increase its brand and improve each year.  2018 looks to be the best year yet.  Congrats to the entire crew over at Collider for presenting such an intriguing and enjoyable program.

EYG Top Ten Paul Newman Movies

EYG23

Well, here we are once again with the EYG Top 10 list following the Top 10 Show.  We took last week off since John and Matt did a Best of 2017 Show and I had already done that list.

During that time, I joined up with the Patreon for the show and I am happily donating to them.  I figure I can donate at this higher level for a little while and then drop down to something that fits the budget better.  I am happy to contribute to the week fun.

However, one of the other Patreons suggested Top 10 Paul Newman films and I knew I would be in trouble. I have not seen very many Paul Newman films.  In fact, it was easier compiling the Clint Eastwood list than this one would be.

I still listened to the podcast because I enjoy the pairing of John and Matt.  They are very funny and entertaining, discussing movies.  Even if it is a movie that I was unfamiliar with, it is great listening to these two discuss it.

But as I am scouring the IMDB page for Paul Newman, I realized that I was not going to be able to fill out a Top 10 list… so I made it Top 5.

The EYG Top 5 Paul Newman Movies

#5.  The Verdict.  Newman as a down on his luck, struggling lawyer who has taken his life and his honor in a different path is a strong story.  How he went from prestigious lawyer to ambulance chaser is a warning to all of us.

Image result for the color of money#4.  The Color of Money.  Not my favorite Tom Cruise movie, but I do like how we see Newman as a pool hustler, Fast Eddie Felson, returning from his iconic role in The Hustler.  Fast Eddie has become the old, wise mentor looking to pass his skill on to the younger one in Cruise.  This was a Martin Scorsese film as well.

Related image#3.  The Hustler.  Fast Eddie’s first appearance.  The story of a pool player who crashed and burned, losing all his money only to try to redeem himself.  What a cast this film had with Jackie Gleeson as Minnesota Fats, Piper Laurie and George C. Scott as well.

Image result for the Sting movie#2.  The Sting.  When you matched up Paul Newman with Robert Redford, you got magic.  This was one example. The pair got together to try and recoop loses in cards games with some real dangerous people, including crime lord Lonnegan played by Richard Shaw.

Image result for butch cassidy sundance kid jumping off cliff#1.  Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.  Another team up between Newman and Redford, creating some of the most iconic scenes of any movie.  The crooks on the run story was able to truly show off the skills of its two main leads.  This is based on two real life characters.

Looking at the list of movies Paul Newman starred in, it surprised me how few of the movies I had actually seen.  I know some by name, such as Cool Hand Luke and The Drowning Pool, but I have never seen them, or, if I had seen them, it was so long ago that I do not remember.  This would be a hole in my game if I were ever involved in the Schmoedown.

The TV Week That Was

spoilers

It is time for the TV Week That Was!  Welcome every one.

Image result for agents of shield season 5 episode 8Agents of SHIELD continues to have a fantastic season five.  I am not sure how a show that was a superhero/spy show can all of a sudden has become one of the best science fiction shows on television.  The return of Robin in the future brought some real emotional moments to the story, especially for May.  The team is preparing for the eventual return from the future in order to save the world from being destroyed.  I think there are some answers we will get, such as Quake not being responsible for the destruction of the earth.  We also are gearing up for the showdown between SHIELD and the Kree.  AoS has just been spectacular all year long and shows no sign of slowing down.

Image result for the trial of flash CWI took a chance to watch Flash this week.  I used to watch Flash regularly the first couple of seasons, but I lost interest as it seemed like every week was the same thing.  I did enjoy the characters and the actors so I figured I would give it another chance.  The trial of Flash was quite the disappointment.  There was nothing that happened that I didn’t expect would happen.  Despite having some opportunity to do something different, Flash just stuck with the old cliche of the super hero alter identity convicted and sent to prison.  Then, the villain of the week was one of the weakest I had seen.  I do have some hopes for Ralph Digby, as I have always been a fan of Elongated Man, but I am not sure that I will be sticking with this show long enough to see Ralph.

Image result for black lightningThe reason I was watching the Flash was because I wanted to see the debut of the CW’s newest super hero, Black Lightning.  This was much more like it.  Black Lightning was a very enjoyable first episode and I am looking forward to seeing episode two.  Black Lightning was in retirement and living happily with his family and as a local principal, Jefferson Pierce.  However, when his daughters get into serious trouble with local crime lord and gangs, Black Lightning had to come out of retirement.  The series explored several black issues, such as gangs and being pulled over by police officers, and it did it seriously and with intelligence.  It was not just checking the boxes.  It was speaking seriously about the problem.  So far, Black Lightning is full of promise.

Image result for scandal quinn is deadScandal returned this week with a very strong episode until the end.  We started it out believing that Rowan had shot and killed Quinn.  They then spent the whole episode mourning her and doing things they would do if Quinn was dead.  Huck had found evidence that he believed pointed toward Olivia as Quinn’s killer and his emotions pulled him apart throughout the entire show.  Huck was tremendous here.  Olivia was very good as well, truly playing off her guilt.  However, all of the emotion looks to be for naught as Charlie, who had been spiraling out of control, went to Rowan looking to get back to his old job as a killer.  And then he hears a baby crying.  He rushes in and there is a baby.  Is it his and Quinn?  Is she still alive.  I think so and that would waste all of the emotional beats of the episode.

Image result for how to get away with murder He's deadHow to Get Away With Murder returned as well this week with a very solid episode, but one that kind of reset the season for the second half.  No matter what they had done, though, it would have paled in comparison to that unbelievably dramatic mid-winter finale.  However, it did get things rolling with Jorge Castillo gaining control of the newborn, the Keating 5 finding out that Simon was not dead, and how Wes had left a voicemail message on Dominic’s phone. (?)  Dominic wound up dead at the hands of Frank too.  Lots of things happen and the gaps in the story from the first half get filled in.

Image result for riverdale betty's brotherRiverdale also returned this week, fresh off the dumping of the Black Hood storyline.  However, Archie is speculating that something did not feel right about it and it could be that we will be returning to that story before too long.  Could it be Betty’s long lost brother, Chick?  They brought Chick in from a couple of towns over and he does seem to be a little off.  Also this episode, the FBI approached Archie to do undercover work to spy on the Lodges in the weekly “how stupid can the cops be in Riverdale” situation.  Archie rightly asked the FBI agent about them talking to him (a high school student) without his parents present and the FBI guy said that they did that because they may suspect Archie’s dad as well.  Duh!  Plus, Southside High was closed down and the Serpents were sent to Riverdale High for some great gang shenanigans.  I have to say that season two of Riverdale ahs been a dramatic step down from season one.

Image result for patriots eaglesThe New England Patriots won the AFC Championship in a close battle with the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-20 to head to their second straight Super Bowl appearance and the 8th Super Bowl in the career of Tom Brady.  They will be playing the Philadelphia Eagles who, is currently playing, but crushing the Minnesota Vikings.  At the moment, the score is 38-7 in the 4th quarter.  The Patriots and Eagles will meet in the Super Bowl in Minnesota in two weeks.

Welcome back to Bill Maher, whose HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher returned from vacation this week and immediately found its voice in making jokes about the Trump Administration.  Maher’s guest included Fire and Fury author Michael Wolff.

Happy viewing

Call Me By Your Name

Related image

Call Me By Your Name is one of the films this year competing for award consideration that had not yet opened in a theater near me.  It is annoying when, after watching movies all year, the award shows are talking about films that have yet to come out in my area.

It has finally arrived and it is a very strong movie that centered around two very strong performances.  Timothée Chalamet played Elio, a 17-year old American-Italian boy who is finding himself.  He finds himself attracted to Oliver (Armie Hammer), a colleague of his father, and the two of them dance around each other while trying to determine what they should do.

The relationship between Elio and Oliver is very sweet and real.  Elio is confused by his feelings and not sure what Oliver thought.  Elio pursued other sexual relationships with girls his own age as he and Oliver continued their “courtship.”

This is a very European film.  The way the film approaches some of these ideas is just really progressive.  It is as if it is just as natural as anything.  It was really refreshing to see this.

I also loved the parents of Elio.  They were so wonderful and loving and understanding that I am not sure that we have seen such amazing parents in movies ever.  They were open and honest with Elio and never once lectured him about his choices.  They were there for him.  It would be awesome if more parents were this way.  Amira Casar and Michael Stuhlbarg played these roles.

The film is beautifully shot and directed by Luca Guadagnino.  It is a coming-of-age story that is as subtle and caring of a young boy who found a relationship that he did not expect.  The film is definitely Timothee Chalamet’s film.  His performance is note perfect and covers the spectrum of the emotions.

Call Me By Your Name is a wonderful film that featured one tremendous performance and several really great ones.  Chalamet should be in consideration for an Oscar nomination this year.  And he will have deserved it.

Phantom Thread

The Oscar movies are finally starting to open in the areas where I can see them.  Many people had Phantom Thread in their top ten of the year that I decided to give the film a chance, despite not being high on my list of anticipation.

I was bored.

I did not like Phantom Thread much at all.

Daniel Day-Lewis plays Reynolds Woodcock, a fashion artist/dress designer during the 1950s.  Reynolds is very persnickety in his mannerisms and the order his follows.  It made me wonder if this guy was meant to be on the Autism Spectrum.  When he meets waitress Alma (Vicky Krieps), he brings her into his life as his newest muse.  However, Alma does not intend to be just the next disposable muse.  She is in it for the long haul.

Daniel Day-Lewis claims that this will be his final film, as he is retiring, and he does his normal great job creating this weird character.  Vicky Krieps also does a great job opposite the legendary star.  The performances of the film was not the problem.

Through the first hour or so of the movie, I was really bored.  I understand it was a slow burn, but I was squirming in my seat and dozing off and just wishing this would get over.  There is a moment in the story where the film takes a different turn.  Honestly, the film became more interesting at this point, but then I wasn’t sure if the characters were doing things that they should have been doing.  At times, it seemed as if they were out of character near the end of the film.

You always know that Daniel Day-Lewis is going to be amazing.  The film looked tremendous and extremely stylish.  I just don’t think much happened and, by the time some thing did happen, I was checked out.

12 Strong

Image result for 12 strong movie poster

Chris Hemsworth is showing the world that he is more than just Thor.

Hemsworth is the lead character in the new war film, 12 Strong, which tells the just recently declassified story of the Horse Soldiers, a group of 12 men who went to Afghanistan after September 11th to fight against the Taliban.

The members of the Dagger Squad was sent to Afghanistan to aid a local warlord in their attempts to retake the country from the Taliban and isolate them from Al Qaeda.  When the Dagger Squad arrived, they realized that they would be taking on the well-armed Taliban army by riding horses into battle.

I had never heard about this story before so I came into the film without any preconceived expectations.  I think that having no idea about this helped make the film stronger.  The battle scenes are extremely dramatic and felt truly real, and the fact that these soldier approached it on horseback with their automatic weapons fighting against tanks and missile launchers was truly amazing.

Now, honestly, a lot of the characters in this film are lacking.  If you are looking at it in a strictly movie stand point, only a few of them have anything more than just surface level development.  Yet, that is not a huge drawback for this film because of the way it is shot and the seriousness of the situation.

Joining Hemsworth, who plays Captain Mitch Nelson, in this film are Michael Shannon as Hal Spencer, the older veteran who believes in Mitch, and Michael Pena as Sam Diller, who starts with some distaste for Mitch.  The strongest relationship in the film may be between Hemsworth and Navid Negahban who plays General Dostum, one of the Afghan military warlords willing to aid the US.

The true story is amazing considering the odds that these soldiers faced in their attempt to bring to justice those men responsible for the 9-11 attacks.  There are some scenes here where you wonder exactly how it is possible that these men are able to escape death, let alone continue their mission.

Hemsworth is truly a star.  He has shown us the ability to be larger-than-life.  He has shown us that he has comedy chops.  Now, he has shown us that he can carry a dramatic role as well.  A role that forces him to get down and dirty and reach an area that he has yet to go.  He has a presence on the screen like few others (actually reminds me a bit of Dwayne Johnson.  I’d love to see those two together in a movie).

12 Strong might be a bit long, but it did not feel that way.  It is a realistic and powerful war movie that could have used a little more character development, but succeeds nonetheless.

Forever My Girl

Forever My Girl Movie Poster

I would venture to say that when the seven year old girl has a greater acting range than anyone else in the movie, you have some trouble brewing.

Little Abby Ryder Fortson (who plays Cassie Lang in the Ant Man film and its upcoming sequel) is easily the best, most entertaining part of this film.   She delivers her lines with enthusiasm and gusto, leaving the rest of the cast in her diminutive wake.

Josie (Jessica Rothe, who I thought was considerably better in Happy Death Day) prepared for her wedding to Liam Page (Alex Roe).  Problem was… Liam had just written and recorded a country song that was hitting it big and he decided to leave Josie at the altar.  Instead, he took off for the bright lights of music city.  He never looked back.

That is, until he hears that his high school best friend had been killed in an accident.  This brings Liam, full fledged country music star, back to his hometown where he discovered that Josie was the mother of a 7 year old girl, Billy (Abby Ryder Fortson).  By the way, Liam left her eight years ago. Surprise!  Liam is a daddy.

I swear, Alex Roe had one expression for every scene in the movie.  He was about as cardboard as you could possibly get.  Every moment felt like the same moment because he appeared unable to react to it like a natural human.  That might be harsh, but I just felt that there needed to be way more emoting going on from a lead character.

There was little to no chemistry between Roe and Rothe, despite the fact that they were meant to be this forever couple that would overcome anything to be together.  I never got that.  Honestly, I never got a reasonable answer to the question of why Liam left her at the altar to begin with.  I don’t know why I am supposed to cheer for this pairing to reunite when Liam only seems to be a giant douche.  Why would Josie accept this jerk back?  He basically left her because he was going to be successful in music and didn’t want to be tied down to her.  He then spends the next seven or eight years doing drugs, getting drunk and whoring around.  Who knows how many children he actually does have?

We are supposed to believe that he really loves Josie because he kept his old flip cell phone from high school and listened to a message she left on it every day.  Sounds more stalker-like than charming.

The only bit of charisma given to us from Liam is when he is with young Billy.  She does do a decent job of being entertaining with whomever she shares screen time with, which is an impressive feat for someone so small.  And her song at the movie’s end is charming.  Having said that, no parent in their right mind would allow her to do what she did at the end of the movie.

This is not a Nicholas Sparks movie, but it sure felt like one.  The nonsensical romantic film between two beautiful yet deeply shallow people with a story that you can see coming for miles and miles falls right into that genre of films.  Of course, that means that there would be an audience for this type of movie, but I am certainly not it.
