“Call Me Red”

“Murder Horny”

I was able to catch up with the new season/series of Dexter: Resurrection this morning. New episodes come out on Fridays on Showtime, so I can follow it along as the season progresses for however long it will last.

I was very excited to see episode four as I knew it had some kind of serial killer dinner party at the center of it. I did not know that the guest list would be as sparkling as it was. The party was thrown by Peter Dinklage was something that I knew. He played serial killer fan Leon Prater. He was the employer of problem-solver Charley, who is played by Uma Thurman. We had seen her before.

Having Prater show Dexter (whom he believed was the Dark Passenger) around his trophy room of serial killers was creepy. Especially when he showed Dexter the hammer of the Trinity Killer and the slides of the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Then, shocks kept coming as the rest of the guests arrived. This list included Krysten Ritter as Mia, Lady Vengeance, Eric Stonestreet as family man Al, David Dastmalchian as Gareth and Neil Patrick Harris as slimy Lowell, the tattoo killer. I did not expect such a Who’s Who of actors taking these roles, and it was even more amazing when NPH wound up on Dexter’s table at the end of the episode.

The show also teased a relationship between Dexter (still pretending to be Red, the Dark Passenger) and Mia. Dexter entertained the idea of working with her until he discovered that she was not exclusively killing sexual predators as the press had assumed. He framed her for the murder of the man that Harrison had killed in the hotel. That had a lot of holes to it (including Mia telling her intended victim that he would be her first kill in New York) but the media seemed to grab the idea quickly.

Batista was not as happy about the results. He had gone to see Detective Wallace with a plan to share ideas on the case that, he said, sounded similar to the bay Harbor Butcher.

The fifth episode ended with a promising connection between Dexter and Harrison, after Harrison learned that his father had taken care of the problem with his own murder. Harrison showed Dexter signs that he was not like him, which made Dexter happy.

“Backseat Driver”

Dexter in NYC continued as he is able to capture himself the “Dark Passenger.” One of the things about Dexter that I love is how intelligent he is. He truly uses his brains to do his stalking of these serial killers.

I am very excited too about the next episode which seems to be a serial killer convention. Dexter took the invite that the Dark Passenger was given and he plans on attending in his place. I had heard about that episode before I started the series so I am excited to see what happens.

Det. Claudette Wallace is sniffing around Harrison, basically laying everything out in front of him in an interrogation, trying to get a confession. Harrison does a great job of keeping her at an arms-length.

I love the character of Blessing. The amount of friendship and joy that he brings to the canvas is really needed. I love his family and I also love how his wife isn’t a fool. She did a background check on Dexter (although that eventually helped Dexter find the Dark Passenger).

Angel Batista is on his way to New York as he is retiring from the police force in Miami. There will be some confrontation with Batista and Dexter at some point of the season, you would think.

Good episode. Excited to see the next episode.

“A Beating Heart…”

“Camera Shy”

I started the new Dexter series on Prime today. I was not sure whether or not I was going to watch this after watching the up and down quality of Dexter: Original Sin. Add that to the fact that I did not watch the last several years of Dexter and I did not know the back story of what happened and I was not sure if I wanted to donate the time needed.

However, I have heard some positive word of mouth about the series and Dexter: Original Sin did have some upside to it. I have the opening in the schedule as I just finished two Apple + series so I decided to give this new version of Dexter a shot.

I will say that I enjoyed the first two episodes of this as Dexter came out of his coma after being shot in the chest by his son. Dexter followed Harrison, his son, to New York to do what he could to help him.

There is another serial killer in New York using the moniker, Dark Passenger, which ticks Dexter off right away.

If there is one thing that I would say about this series is that it feels like New York is really small. Dexter made his way around the city easily, maybe too easily.

I liked the scene that saw David Zayas reprise his role as Angel Batista from the original show, facing off with Dexter after he had awakened from his coma. Batista suspected that Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher, but he had no evidence. Dexter was able to escape from the hospital before Batista returned to see him again.

There are two more episodes currently active on Prime (via Paramount + with Showtime) and released on Fridays.

“I Thought You’d Never Shut Up”

I thought some of the blood was scaled back overall in season three. They used the blood better in season three in my opinion. Still brutal and gory, but less gratuitous.

That all changed in the finale. Wow was this bloody and violent. I loved it.

I have to say that I think the third season was so much better than the second season, which I stopped watching half way through. I just was not interested in this. I was not sure if I wanted to continue watching into season three.

I am glad I decided to watch season three.

The Invincible vs. Conquest battle was just unbelievable. I really thought Eve had bit the big one. I am glad she did not. Apparently Eve’s special gives some details, but I have not watched that.

I am not happy that Conquest’s body was kept by Cecil as a way to find information. This is absolutely a massive mistake and will bite him in the butt before too long.

The series of troubles coming for season four was long and I did not know any of them.

And how long will the humans put up with being killed as collateral damage? There were a bunch of human causalities in this episode.

I did enjoy this season way more than season two. It was on par with the first season. Hopefully, this will continue to be top quality.

“What Have I Done?”

The alternate timeline Invincibles arrived on earth, sent by Angstrom Levy, a villain Mark believed he had killed, and brought destruction and chaos to the planet.

This was a brutal episode of Invincible and saw some real stakes as the major cities of the country were devastated and thousands of people were killed. Sadly, Rex was one of the victims, as he blew himself up taking out one of the Invincible variants.

Our Mark was going through it as well. Not only was Eve badly injured, but he had to face the fact that this entire thing was his own fault. Angstrom brought these Invincible variants to the earth in order to get Mark and Mark was having a difficult time dealing with that guilt. Even though this is not Mark’s direct fault, the idea that it only happened because Angstrom was after him was a tough pill to swallow.

The adaptation of The Invincible War was filled with action and drama. The battle with the incoming Invincibles was tough and we saw all of the world’s heroes responding.

It also feels as if there is a slight warming of the relationship between Mark and Cecil, though Mark is still very cautious around him, and who could blame him for it?

Then there is no rest for Mark as we got the arrival of Conquest during the clean up of the city. Mark was itching to hit someone and these two powerhouses went straight for one another, setting up next episode with another bigtime throwdown.

This episode was compelling as could be and was one of the best of the series so far.

“All I Can Say is I’m Sorry”

This one was a tough episode to watch.

It started off with the Batman v Superman set up as the character who would become Powerplex lost a sister and niece in the battle of Chicago between Omni-Man and Invincible. He blamed Invincible for the loss and tried to get justice.

In the end, Powerplex’s quest for justice cost him the life of his own wife and son.

Honestly, when I saw that, I immediately thought about Jay Schmidt from the YouTube show pReview’d, which I watch regularly and I know review this show. Jay is very sensitive to anything family-wise since he became a father recently. Seeing the after effects of Powerplex’s attack was devastating, even as an animated show. I had to go watch the pReview’d episode after this and, as I expected, he did not react well. I felt bad for him because he is such a sweet man.

The themes of the episode focused on the results of the loss of life around the fights of the superheroes and how much responsibility the heroes share in the deaths. This is an argument that some films and stories have made, including the loss of life in Man of Steel and, as I mentioned earlier, BvS.

I read a comment that this event in the comic book made a huge impact on Invincible and that it may be a needed moment for the character development of Mark.

Changing the subject for a sec, I just do not like the new black and blue costume. I miss the old one, but it looks as if there is a reason for that change as the tag at the end of the episode looks like something is coming.

“This Was Supposed to Be Easy”

Invincible and Eve form their own protection company. Invincible Inc., and they take the contract to protect the prison after there was an attempt to break out Paul.

Invincible takes on the dragon form of Mister Lu at the prison, and that does not go too well for him. The dragon is extremely formidable, but ends up disappearing when Mister Lu is killed by Machine Head.

This was all orchestrated by Titan, whose family was being threatened by Lu in order to get Titan to bust out Paul. Paul tried to recruit Invincible to help him out, with the idea that the Order is much better when Titan was in charge than when these other killers were. Mark did not buy that, but does inadvertently helped him.

Meanwhile, Mark and Eve decide to start to take things a little slower. They had considered getting their own place, but Mark eventually decided to stay at home with his mom and Oliver. Oliver had been sneaking out of the house to go see friends in the night to skateboard and Mark and his mom were worried.

This episode did feel like a step back, but it was still entertaining and it did cover an area that had not been addressed for awhile now.

Dexter: Original Sin S1 E10

Spoilers

“Code Blues”

I have been up and down with this new prequel version of Dexter during its run on Amazon Prime. Leading up to the tenth episode, I had mixed emotions for this show. The tone had been all over the place and there were times when it felt as if the show wanted to be more comedic than it should have been.

Thankfully, I feel as if the finale of the season delivered a reasonably solid episode, in particular in connection with the kidnapping of Nicky. However, the show left a giant dangling plot in Dexter’s serial killer brother unresolved and feeling like a huge time bomb ready to go off. Will that ever be dealt with? Will there be another season of this version of Dexter? I’m not sure the answers to any of those questions, but looking just at this finale, I thought it was pretty good. (I guess Dexter deals with Brian in season one of the original series, which I did not remember.)

It did not hurt that most of the flashbacks were over and were just used to further the backstory of Brian, which was better than the stuff with Dexter’s birth mom.

The material with Captain Spencer was much better. I have to say that I was critical about the manner in which Dexter allowed Spencer to escape his table last episode. I thought that was an unnecessary risk. Of course, it worked out well, and Dexter was able to save Nicky from a watery grave after Spencer tried to drown the boy. Dexter was able to do it without revealing his identity to Nicky too. Win-Win.

He also was able to catch Spencer and kill him on the boat. Lots of blood involved there, which had to be a problematic plot hole.

Having Dexter, Harry and Deb dancing at the end of the episode was a fun way to show how positive everyone was feeling, even though a darkness lurked around a corner in Brian.

Overall, Dexter: original Sin finished strong, but perhaps not strong enough for me to dismiss the erratic tone taken by the series through the first two-thirds of the season. Some moments were very strong and engaging while other moments just did not work. All of the recasts were big hits though and the show definitely ended on a high note.

Invincible S3 E4

Spoilers

“You Were My Hero”

Episode four of the third season of Invincible was really good, if not split into two distinct parts.

I want to get this out of the way first. When this episode started to use a narrator, like a voice over guy for movie trailers, I HATED THAT! That was the worst. I thought the second half of the show was going to be absolutely brutal because of this horrid technique.

However, as soon as Alan found Battle Beast, the second half picked up dramatically. I am not a fan of Omni Man, but seeing how he has a soft spot for Alan was a cool thing and watching them battle against two Viltrumites was fun.

I really enjoyed the first part of the episode where Mark was taken into the future to confront the king who had enslaved earth. I was sure that the king was going to turn out to be Nolan, Mark’s father, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was the Immortal instead.

Then, with the Immortal basically crazy, the struggle Mark had to face with whether or not to do what the Immortal wanted, to kill him, was a major character beat. It reminded me somewhat of Superman in Man of Steel when he broke Zod’s neck. Mark had no real choice and had to do it (although ripping off Immortal’s head was a little more drastic than breaking his neck).

I hope the beginning of the episode does not turn out to be just a throw away bit in this series, because I liked this and Mark was battling inside on his choice. I wonder if this will be forgotten considering it led to Mark and Eve having sex for the first time.

With the exception of the voice over guy, this was my favorite episode of Invincible in awhile. I hope it isn’t just forgotten (as there were some intriguing things mentioned in the future that could be hints about what is coming).

Invincible S3 E1, E2, E3

Spoilers

I did not finish season two of Invincible. I was not loving the show at that time. It felt to me that the show was just falling back on the blood splatter as the story. It was going too far for my taste. To be fair, I did not see the second half of the season so I do not know what it was like.

I had considered not watching season three either. It kicked off with three episodes dropping and they were longer episodes, so I just wasn’t sure if I wanted to get back into it. I decided that i would give it a chance.

I found these first three episodes of season three pretty good. There was still blood, but it did not feel as over-the-top as the last episodes that I watched.

I am not much of a fan of Mark’s new costume. I preferred the first one, but perhaps the new one will grow on me. The whole Invinci-Boy stuff was funny. Oliver is an interesting hero and kind of plays with Mark’s hypocrisy. His conflict with Cecil was based on basically the same idea, especially with Oliver killing the Mauler Twins.

The conflict between Mark and Cecil was rough and we saw how Cecil came to be with a backstory. I am not sure if any of them are in the right with this. Mark does seem to be overly erratic at times, but Cecil is totally condescending. We’ll see where this goes from here.

I did enjoy the arc of the Guardians over these first three episodes, with the conflict between Mark and Cecil splitting the team in half. I found this Guardians storyline to be a worthy addition to the stories going on.

I also liked the Mark-Eve relationship and how they have started to date. Admittedly, date might be a bit of a relative term, but I do like them together.

After watching the first three episodes, I feel as if I will keep giving the show another episode until I find myself feeling as I did during season two. So far, I would say, so good.

Dexter: Original Sin S1 E9

Spoilers

“Blood Drive”

I was more impressed with this episode of Dexter: Original Blood than I had been for a few episodes. Then Dexter did something so stupid that it defies explanation.

In the last few minutes, he captured Captain Spencer and wrapped him up on his table. He taunted him for awhile and then decided to let him escape. I understand he was doing it so he could follow Spencer to where he had the missing Nicky hidden away, but there are so many things that could go wrong with that idea that it is shocking. I mean, just off the top of my head, the police captain could decide to turn Dexter in and frame him for the death of the kids. I can’t believe that would be hard to do… especially since Dexter had already cut off Spencer’s little finger, something that everyone knows the killer had done.

Spencer’s motive for kidnapping Nicky (and the kid before whom he killed) was fairly week too. I mean, just to get back at his ex-wife, he was going to torture and kill his own son? That felt so bizarre. I assume the other kid was taken and killed as a way to throw off the investigation, but that was so out there that I just do not accept that any of this made sense.

The flashbacks this episode were more engaging, which was not typical for this show. They featured the two traumatized brothers, Brian and Dexter, being adopted by Harry and Doris and having Brian be psychotic. It feels like it was a bit of a stretch from Brian and Dexter seeing everyone killed to Brian trying to suffocate baby Deb with a pillow to make her stop crying. The time frame seemed rushed.

I do think making the serial killer involved in this season Dexter’s separated brother is a good twist. I’m just not sure that this is done well either. Brian did not show much emotion about being separated from Dexter as a child, so having the separation be the driving force behind Brian’s murder spree did not feel right. Maybe it was just his excuse to unleash his own Dark Passenger, which makes more sense to me.

I believe there is only one more episode remaining for this season so we’ll see how things get wrapped up. The Brian storyline does not feel like it can be finished up in one episode, especially an episode where the Dexter-Spencer story is still a high priority. Still, we’ll see what happens.

Spoilers

“The Big Bad Body Problem”

“Business and Pleasure”

I just am not sure how I feel about this show.

Dexter: Original Sin came back with some new episodes on Prime, but they seem to be inconsistent. There are some solid scenes with good tension while there are too many scenes that felt in was in the wrong show. The tone just does not work throughout.

Dexter figured out that Captain Spencer was the kid killer and had kidnapped his own son. He did a classic “Batman Leap” to figure it out, too. A “Batman Leap” was something that my friends and I dubbed when you make a leap in logic that comes out of nowhere, like Batman would do on the old TV show (Glu Glutton’s Glue Factory…). There is no real logical way Dexter would think the Captain was the culprit.

Of course, he was right and I assume that the Captain is going to end up on Dexter’s table before the end of the season.

Deb’s storyline is one of those that do not seem to work very well for me. They took Deb’s boyfriend Gio and made him a total jerk after seeing nothing of this from him during the entire time. They just decided to make this guy an ass for reasons.

The flashbacks are another part of this show that does not work for me either. They put Dexter, his brother and mother in jeopardy in a ridiculous situation that, I supposed, is meant to show you where the Dark Passenger came from.

Harry and LaGuerta went to Tampa looking for leads for their serial killer, and Harry found something in a file. I am not sure what it was, but the character’s name was Brian. I wondered if that is going to be Dexter’s brother.

Episode eight was a little better and more consistent than seven, but so much of the show is questionable that I think it could be so much better with some better writing.

Battlestar Galactica S4 E19-E21

Spoilers

“Daybreak Part One, Two & Three”

As I finished the last write up for Battlestar Galactica S4 E13-18, I had planned on watching the three-part finale as a big movie. I was starting to figure out how long it would take and when I could fit it into my schedule when I realized that I had the time tonight. So I turned to Amazon Prime and continued with the final three episodes of Battlestar Galactica.

I must say I feel as if the show came to an end in quite a lovely way.

The big battle at the Cylon colony was an incredible firefight, and, as I expected, it turned into a “opera house” type situation. I liked the way that resolved itself, putting the people involved in the proper places.

I did find the flashback sections of these episodes to be perhaps more than was needed. It did add some good background to some of the characters, especially Gaius and his father, but some felt superfluous.

The whole Galen Tyrol discovery of Cally’s murder by Tory was shocking , but it was just the way Galen had been portrayed over the series. Hotheaded, angry and reactive, Galen snapped Tory’s neck, which messed up the entire deal between Adama and Cavil. I’m not sure Cavil taking his own life made sense in this situation, but it did bring a resolution to the conflict.

I figured most of the final episode would be falling action, wrapping up the stories and giving us closure for the characters. Laura Roslin’s death was sad and yet beautiful. I was afraid that Adama would do something drastic since he had said that he “couldn’t live without her” earlier this season.

Kara’s return was revealed that she was an angel of some sort, and her just disappearance after a goodbye with Lee was really melancholic. I liked that they did not go into a great detail to explain what was going on with her and this made all the sense in the world.

I am not sure how I feel about the prologue at the end with Head Gaius and Head Six walking around in present day on this new earth. I had guessed that they were in the past of a planet when they arrived, but not sure why these “head” characters were in the present day timeline.

Overall, I was satisfied with the conclusion of the show. It was a fantastic sci-fi show with a lot of faith built into it. I did like how it presented us with the conclusions for the characters, even if some of them were not very happy (Adama, Lee etc.) There may be a question or two that the finale opens that may not make a lot of sense (giving up technology is one…), but there is nothing that ruins the show for me.

Spoilers

“The Oath”

“Blood on the Scales”

“No Exit”

“Deadlock”

“Someone to Watch Over Me”

“Islanded in a Stream of Stars”

I watched six episodes in the final season of Battlestar Galactica today, completely enthralled by the experience. This has been such a journey, with some of the best characters on TV and an almost impossible storyline to predict.

Admiral Adama has been so up and down over this stretch of time. So much of his shakiness has been because of his drinking. I do not think the show has intended to dive into his drinking, but it is clear that the alcohol has been a problem. It turns Adama into someone that is so different, so angry. He is usually a balanced individual, but when he is drinking, he is anything but.

Of course, he had to survive the coup attempt by Tom Zarek and Gaeta. I gasped when Zarek ordered the assassination of the Council, and it being carried out. It seemed like an impossible situation, but Lee, Kara and the others fought brutally to stop the coup and prevent Gaeta from executing Adama. It was close, but they succeeded. The scene at the end of that episode with a firing squad executing Gaeta and Zarek was rough.

How many times over these episodes did Adama remove his Admiral medals? I do not think this was a strong season for Adama overall.

Galactica is falling apart, and the pain it is causing Adama is adding to his own stress. Adding some Cylon living goop to fix the cracks in the structures was not helping matters and only caused more strife among the people on the ship.

Ellen returned. After she had been poisoned by Sol on Caprica, she was reborn in a Cylon resurrection chamber. She was one of the Final Five, and we learned that they were the five that created the current Cylons. Her arrival became a huge point of contention for Sol. Sam was shot in the head during the battle and wound up hooked up to machines, much like the Hybrid was.

Sol and Caprica lost their baby. He was going to name him Liam. It was a real painful moment and only went to highlight how vital Hera was to the Cylons. Boomer wound up manipulating Tyrol into helping her escape from the brig and she ends up taking Hera and escaping Galactica upon a viper, pretending to be Athena. Not before fracking Helo (still pretending to be Athena) with Athena tied up in the very room watching it happen. The possible retrieval of Hera feels like a major part of the final three episodes.

Kara struggled with her discovery from earth of her own dead body. She had no idea how it happened or what was going on. She was not a Cylon as all the models had been revealed (I guess except for Daniel, the mysterious Number 7). She had some connection to a song that her father used to play on the piano for her as a girl, the same song that Hera had written the notes to and that played to trigger the Final Five. How this song works in this story is still a huge question.

Oh, and what a dick move by Baltar to reveal to everybody that Kara had found her own body on earth. He claimed it was proof of life after death. Kara slapped him for revealing the truth as he did, but that seemed out of character. I expected Kara to give him a full on right cross. I had been finding more positives about Baltar over this stretch of episodes, but this made me remember what a jerk he was.

I really liked the alliance formed with the Cylons and the humans, and I also liked how there were plenty of people who found this to be against what they believed.

Adama’s decision to finally abandon ship and give Galactica a goodbye was long overdue as the ship had been dying for much of this season. The moment of Adama and Tigh accepting the loss together was a powerful way to end episode 18.

The final three episodes of the series are a three-part run, and I plan on watching them all together at some time this week. It is entitled “Daybreak” and I can honestly say that I have no real idea how it will conclude, which is awesome. I assume there will be some variation of the vision with Hera playing out at the new Cylon colony, and I have to guess that Cavil will get his comeuppance. I do hope we discover exactly what is going on with Starbuck, and what it means when the Hybrid and Sam referred to her as the “Harbinger of Death.” I do not want Laura to die from her cancer and I would love a happy ending for her and Adama. I do not think that is going to happen, unfortunately.

“Revelations”

“Sometimes a Great Notion”

“A Disquiet Follows My Soul”

So much is happening.

In Revelations, there is a tense showdown between the Cylons and the Humans. D’anna wants the four of the five Cylons brought to them and Lee wants the Cylons to release their hostages.

The four were revealed to everyone and it led to some major frustration for Adama.

Starbuck, on a tip from Tyrol and Anders, figured out that a specific Viper had a destination programmed into it and she guessed that it was to earth.

The Galactica and the Cylons, in an alliance, found earth only to discover that it was a nuclear wasteland.

In Sometimes a Great Notion, the crew explored the ruined earth.

They discovered that the 13 Tribe was a tribe of Cylons.

Starbuck recovered her own corpse in her own ship, crashed on the earth. What does that mean? What does that make Kara who is living right now? She burned her corpse.

Roslin and Adama both wound up in a downward spiral from the failure of earth. Adama boozing it up and Roslin rejecting her medical care.

Adama, drunk and angry, stormed to Tigh’s room and tried to get him to kill him. It was a tense scene that felt out of place. Adama has been fairly inconsistent during this time. Not sure how this worked.

Dualla goes out and has a great date night with Lee and then kills herself with a gunshot to the head. Wha????

Then we find out that Ellen Tigh was the fifth Cylon. That revelation was fairly flat for me.

Finally, in “A Disquiet Follows My Soul,” more craziness with Adama and Roslin. They end up in bed together at the end of the episode. Hopefully a good Frack will straighten these two up because they are really needed to get back into their roles.

Tom Zarek is back to his machinations and he is teaming up with the angry and vengeful Gaeta. This was after Gaeta had a bitter throwdown with Kara, with neither of them holding back.

Tyrol’s son has a kidney problem and Tyrol rushed him to the doctor. This was where he learned that the little boy was not his son. Cally was unsure who the father was and, after the wedding, it was not Tyrol. I’m not sure why that was done, unless it was just to screw with Tyrol more.

Turns out the father was Hot Dog and Tyrol beat him up at Baltar’s speech that was so much negative and darkness.

Darkness is a good description for these last two episodes.
