Bowling for Columbine (2002)

I was going through Amazon Prime adding to a list I was compiling for my upcoming 2018-19 New Year Eve/Day Binge-a-thon when I came across the documentary fro filmmaker Michael Moore, Bowling for Columbine.  It had been a long time since I saw the film and so I hit play.

Columbine is known in our lexicon because of one of the most well known and tragic school shootings that occurred at Columbine High School in April 1999.  The Columbine massacre changed the ideas and policies of schools across the country in regards to active shooters.  Unfortunately, it is a problem in America that has become too common place since this tragedy.

Michael Moore examines the reasons behind the massacre and tries to determine why we as Americans have so many more gun deaths than other countries of the world.  He debunks the ideas of racial differences, violent movies and games by showing that other countries, specifically Canada, shares these traits but do not lash out with violence.

Moore goes directly to NRA president, at the time, Charlton Heston and asks him directly about the reasons.  Heston tries to drop the typical sound byte spin that he used in rallies (including one in Colorado right after the Columbine massacre) such as America has a “history of violence” and more “mixed ethnicity” but Moore immediately shot them down.  You almost felt sorry for the actor because he was clearly out of his element with Moore.  Heston left the interview when Moore brought up a case of a six year old boy who took a gun to school in Flint, Michigan and killed a little girl.  Watching Heston slowly walk away from Moore was a powerful statement in this film.

Michael Moore has a skill to approach deathly serious topics with humor and a sarcasm that is very disarming and before you know it, you are speaking to him and revealing information that you hadn’t intended to.  This was in full effect here as the world was still getting to know Moore. These days, people see Michael Moore and become more on guard, seeing him more as a liberal filmmaker with an agenda.  At the time, Moore was making remarkable documentaries because he was not as famous as he is now.

Bowling for Columbine is a powerful film with explosive content.  We as a nation have never really dealt with the problem of school shootings that was highlighted by Columbine which makes this 17 year old documentary as relevant today as it was then.

There are some actresses here that I kind of think should be lead actresses, but we placed them here because that is what they are up for in the Oscar consideration.  Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz are two of those that are really the lead characters of The FavouriteAnn Dowd was great as the library worker tortured by the thieves in American Animals. Nicole Kidman was heart-breaking in Boy Erased as the mother who kept quiet despite her better judgement.  First Man‘s Claire Foy really stole all of her scenes as the wife of Neil Armstrong.  Several real life women being portrayed here.  Dowd, Kidmon and Foy are all real people as was Amy Adams as Lynne Chaney.  Emily Blunt, who had a great year, was just amazing in A Quiet Place. The scene where she gives birth in the bathtub was as suspenseful as you get.

Image result for richard grant can you ever forgive me

Lots of great performances from these gentlemen.  Richard E. Grant had amazing chemistry with Melissa McCarthy and played a fascinating person.  Michael B. Jordan almost stole Black Panther from Black Panther.  Many people understood where Killmonger was coming from.  Sam Elliot is getting a lot of love from award shows, but honestly, he is just playing Sam ElliotChris Hemsworth has amazing comedic timing and now we know he can be sinister from his cult leader in Bad Times at the El Royale.  While Adam Driver was great in BlackKKlansman, Topher Grace as David Duke was unbelievable.  Mahershala Ali continues his streak of brilliance in Green Book.  His chemistry with Viggo Mortensen is off the charts.  Timothee Chalamet was powerful in his drug addiction story and Josh Hamilton is the best father you could hope for.  Sam Rockwell could have been higher on this list had he been in Vice more.  He was great in what we saw of him as George W. Bush.

Bird Box

Image result for bird box movie poster

A Quiet Place showed us a world where making a sound was the first step to death.  Bird Box takes that same idea but changed it to the sense of sight, presenting us with an entirely new set of conflicts to deal with.

Sandra Bullock stars in this Netflix original film that tries to capture some of the tension and anxiety associated with A Quiet Place, and succeeds for the most part.

A strange compulsion for mass suicide swept the world, caused by the humans seeing something that caused them to take their lives.  Malorie (Bullock), pregnant and scared after her sister (Sarah Paulson) dies, finds herself barricaded in a house with a group of other survivors who have avoided seeing the strange force.

Unfortunately, we know that this situation is temporary as that part of the story is unfolding, we see, at the same time, five years in the future as Malorie and two children named Boy (Julian Edwards) and Girl (Vivien Lyra Blair) make a desperate trek down a river, blindfolded and frightened.

The dual stories play out together as we see how the one time frame eventually melds into the other.

Spoiler

Like in A Quiet Place, we never really get any answers about what it is that has caused the world so much terror. Although, in A Quiet Place, they do drop some distinct hints in the background information.  I feel like there is absolutely zero explanation in Bird Box.  I really think this film needed something to tell us what this monster/force was.  The unknown here subtracted from the story and, while I do not need a detailed explanation, something would have helped.

END of Spoiler

The cast does a fine job in creating the terror of the situation, even if it is difficult to believe that they are able to avoid looking during this entire time.  Sandra Bullock is great, as is Trevante Rhodes, who played Tom.  John Malkovich was here as Douglas, aka jerk #1.  Every apocalypse needs one.  Lil Rel Howery is here too as the tension needed to be broken once and awhile.

Then, I was almost certain that Andrew Lincoln was stepping out in a scene.  He didn’t but you’ll know the place.

Bird Box is a decent ride with some definite tension, but the fact that we know Malorie has the kids on the river really bodes poorly for the others in the house, cutting down the tension in that situation.  And it is difficult to believe that she could maneuver through the woods blindfolded without killing herself.

Still, it had its moments and was enjoyable enough.

The Favourite

The Favourite Movie Poster

This is the second period piece surrounding a Queen of England this holiday season.  Mary Queen of Scots was the first one I saw, which featured Queen Elizabeth while The Favourite features Queen Anne.

Of course, the two films could not be more different.  Mary, Queen of Scots is a drama surrounding the power of a woman and the men looking to bring her down where as The Favourite is a dark comedy featuring the nasty things a couple of women would do to gain favor with the Queen.

Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) is ruling over a country at war with France, but she has to deal with the daily problems of a monarch.  Her friend and confidant Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) helps with the oft-ill Queen and aids in decision making in her stead.  When new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives at the castle, she begins playing different sides against one another to raise the level of her happenstance.

The interactions and manipulations between the three lead ladies in this movie is the main strength of the film.  Olivia Colman is just brilliant as the lonely and forlorn monarch.  She brings so much emotion and gravitas to the role that you can see why her name has been bandied about in Oscar discussions.  Queen Anne has to deal with physical pain from the gout, emotional pain from the loss of children, and the loneliness of the throne which finds her snapping into uncontrollable rages over the littlest things when she feels slighted (in particular from a low self-image about her appearance) or feels as if there are parts of life in which she is missing out upon.

Rachel Wiesz’s Lady Sarah has taken to the power of having the ear (among other body parts) of the Queen and she is not afraid to play that power with the household staff or the heads of state.  When Abigail arrives, Lady Sarah takes a liking to her and, before she realized what had happened, Abigail had usurped her place at the Queen’s side and in her bed.

You can tell immediately that Emma Stone was more of a force than she was being given credit for and that Lady Sarah would regret the oversight.

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer), The Favourite dives deeply into the world of these three women and their desires and wishes.  Two women who want to gain power by the hand of the Queen and a Queen who encourages the jealousy while slowly succumbing to pain and anguish.  The movie lacks a strong conclusion, but the darkness of the comedic takes makes up for the missing aspects and three dominant performances make this a must see.

The 2018 Batman and Robin Awards for Rotteness

Batman and Robin

Here are the Awards for the worst..the Awards for awfulness… the Awards for Crap!  It is The Batman and Robin Awards for Rotteness.

Worst Movie: [SPOILER for Top 25 Worst List] This is easily the worst movie of the year.  It is one of the worst of all time, especially for a wide release in theaters.  Don’t see this travesty.

Worst ActorWill Ferrell, Homes and Watson.  He takes everything that is wrong with Will Ferrell as an actor and multiplies it X100.  Ruining a character like Sherlock Holmes make this even worse.

Worst Actress Dakota Johnson, Fifty Shade Freed.  What can I say?  She certainly raises her acting to the level of material.  That explains this performance.

Worst CGIRobin Hood.  It is laughable in many spots.  You wouldn’t think this would be hard… and yet… here is Robin Hood.

Worst Trailer: A Dog’s Way Home.  This is everything wrong with trailers.  Why do I need to go see this movie now?  I basically saw the entire story in this trailer.  It was already going to be a manipulative film, but I can’t even wonder if the dog finds its way home.

Worst SequelHotel Transylvania 3.  I know some did not mind this, but I found the entire trilogy to be terrible.  Predictable.  Dumb.  Boring.

Worst Super Hero MovieVenom. This was a good year for super hero movies because there were none that were terrible.  I almost gave this to Once Upon a Deadpool, but the Fred Savage stuff save it.  Venom was not a horrible film, but it was not great, especially in comparison.

Best Performance in a Bad MovieWhoopi Goldberg, Nobody’s Fool.  I thought Whoopi was the standout performance of this film that was stupid and made no sense.  Whoopi is always entertaining and she easily had the best lines of this film.

Most Overrated: Alpha.  Hate this movie, but most people liked it.  It is at 79% at Rotten Tomatoes and I have to wonder why.  Is it that boy and his dog vibe?

Favorite “Rotten” Movie Tag.  Originally I was going to give this to Happytime Murders, which has a real low Tomatometer score, but I then discovered that Tag was at 57% and I will have that movie on my Top 30 best list.  While the Tomatometer score was not that low, this was a very fun movie.

Worst Movie I did not seeGotti.  I avoided this like the plague.  When Dan Murrell ripped it a new one on Screen Junkies, I decided it was not worth the time or money.

Cashing a Paycheck Mark Wahlberg, Mile 22.  Wahlberg has done these types of films before, but I had hoped that he learned his lesson.  I guess not.

Worst Directorial Decision15:17 to Paris.  Director Clint Eastwood decided to put the real life people involved with the incident into this movie, not just as extras, but as the leads.  These guys did their best, but they are not actors and it showed.

No, Really… The Book was BetterGoosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.  A real step down from an enjoyable original film… read the Goosebumps books instead.  They are much better.

Worst Reboot/RemakeDeath Wish.  Bruce Willis was in competition for Worst Actor this year with this horrid film.  And the original Death Wish is not that great either, but in comparison to this one, the original is a cinematic masterpiece.

Most Unintentionally Funny MovieBest F(r)iends.  The second part to the new collaboration between Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero (from The Room) can’t help but get big laughs.

Most Successful Bad Movie: The Nun.  This made money.  This even made a bunch of money, but it is so bad.  Why does it make so much money when good films do not?  This horror movie is not even scary and the jump scares are everywhere.

The Spider-man 3 Disappointment of the Year-2018

Disappointment

There were several disappointments in the cinema world in 2018.  Since we already have the John Carter Memorial Award, this disappointment is not considered monetary.  This is a disappointment in quality.

Previous WinnersIn the Heart of the Sea, The Snowman, Amazing spider-man 2, After Earth, Dark Knight Rises, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Batman v. Superman

Runners-Up:  I was so looking forward to Widows.  Unfortunately, I only liked the film and I found it pretty disappointing.  I loved the original and I like Shane Black a lot, so when The Predator was released, it was nowhere near what I had hoped.  Even Oprah couldn’t save A Wrinkle in Time from disappointing.  The Cloverfield Paradox had a remarkable promotion with the trailer during the Super Bowl and I had so much excitement to watch the Netflix show after the game was over.  Then I saw it.  Then, I was so excited about the new version of Halloween with Jamie Lee Curtis. but it was, at best, passable and I was so disappointed with that.  The second half of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom really wasted what had been started.  Sicario: Day of the Soldado was pretty dull and not as good as the first one, which I had rewatched and liked more the second time.  And… Solo: A Star Wars Story.  Nuff said.

The Spider-Man 3 Disappointment of the Year goes to….

Image result for Christopher Robin movie

Christopher Robin

I know a lot of people like this move, but I was so excited about this film and I found it terribly disappointing.  The film did not understand the Winnie the Pooh story and took away the imagination in the story.  The second half of the movie is as bad as any this year.  Ewan McGregor is fine as an adult Christopher Robin, but this film basically turned into a remake of Hook.  I loved Pooh and this was such a letdown.

2018 Gomer Award for Biggest Surprise

Gomer

Next up in the Year in Review is the Gomer Award.  This is the award given to the movie that was the biggest surprise of the year.  A film that I had little or no expectations for but turned out to be great.

Previous Gomer Award WinnersThe Gift, Ferdinand, Edge of Tomorrow, We’re the Millers, The Campaign, Ouija: Origin of Evil.

Runners-Up:  There were actually quite a few choices this year for the Gomer.  Overlord was a film that I did not know much about and had zero expectations only to find out that it was awesome. Instant Family was absolutely going to be just like Daddy’s Home and then, shockingly, it wasn’t and it was so much better and more emotional and real. The film A Simple Favor was outstanding and showed a type of film that I did not expect.  The promotional material looked to be surprised by it too.  John Cho’s Searching had no chance of being great, and yet it was one of the best of the year.  I found Eighth Grade to be as real of a film as I could have ever seen.  As a middle school teacher, these were characters that I have seen on a daily basis.  I walked out of Sorry to Bother You with my jaw dragging from the weirdness and originality.  I was sure that the basketball comedy Uncle Drew would be a travesty and, yet, I actually enjoyed it.  I ignored the remake of Overboard for weeks because I was sure I would hate it, but I did not.  It was decent.  And then Blockers had no reason to be anything but crude, unfunny humor but the film had a real heart and was funny.

The 2018 Gomer Award winner is….

Bumblebee

The last Transformers movie was The Last Knight, and it was one of my least favorite movies ever.  I would put it in the conversation with Movie 43, Batman and Robin etc.  There was no way that any Transformers movie could wash the stench off of itself from that travesty to be good. And yet, Bumblebee did it.  It was a great film, with a ton of heart and some wonderful storytelling.  This is the Transformers movie that we have all waited for and never expected that we would receive.

2018 Top Geek Stories

Pop culture has become the world of the Geek in recent years so there are more and more stories and moments that resonates with the EYG crowd.  Here are the top 12 from 2018.

Image result for 2018 news

#12.  Disney +.  Disney announced they were beginning their own streaming service and they dropped a couple of huge bombs with it.  One, there would be two Star Wars shows on the service (The Mandalorian, untitled prequel to Rogue One) and two, there would be Marvel series featuring MCU characters such as Scarlet Witch and Loki played by Elizabeth Olson and Tom Hiddleston.  Disney will be mentioned again on this list.

#11.  Roseanne dropped from her show.  The ABC sitcom Roseanne returned for an update this year only to see its star Roseanne Barr post a racist tweet about Obama’s former adviser Valerie Jarrett.  ABC/Disney moved quickly and cancelled “Roseanne,” despite solid ratings.  Then, ABC brought the show back, calling it “The Conners,” and killed off the Roseanne character.

#10.  Weird Al gets a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Good news!  The indelible musician and parodist, Weird Al Yankovic was rewarded this year with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Weird Al has won multiple Grammy Awards and has been a leader in Demented music for the last 30+ years.  At the ceremony, Al asked, “Please, please don’t pickaxe my star,”- a reference to the vandalism done to the star of Donald Trump.

#9.  Tweetstorms.  Speaking of Donald Trump, one of the most entertaining aspects of Twitter is to watch the President of the United States, tweet up a storm at 3 in the morning. caring not one bit for grammar, capitalization, spelling or cohesive thought.  President Trump provided so much ammunition for the late night comedians such as Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel and Samantha Bee from his tweets one had to wonder if he was doing it on purpose to distract the public from other subjects the media should be talking about.  FAKE NEWS. WITCH HUNT.

#8.  The Royal Wedding.  The wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took place on May 19 of this year and the country was enthralled.  I am not sure why the country is so fascinated by the weddings of the Royal Family of England, but the pomp and circumstance was everywhere.

#7.  Netflix brought the axe!  The streaming service severed its ties with much of the Marvel Universe as Netflix cancelled Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Daredevil.  One wonders the fate of the upcoming The Punisher season two and Jessica Jones season three.  But Marvel was not the only show to go as the wonderful American Vandal went too.  Netflix appears to be keeping those IPs that they own instead of leasing.  This may be a specific response to Disney + and all the other streaming services that have been springing up recently.

#6.  Disney/Fox merge is approved.  The merger of 20th Century Fox with Disney is coming closer and closer to being reality.  This year the government gave its okey-dokey to the merger, a major hurdle crossed.  It is believed that the merger will be completed in early 2019 as Disney continues to own just about everything in the world.  Our Mouse Overlord Master continues to strengthen its grip on pop culture.  Plus, Fantastic Four and X-Men are heading back to Marvel Studios.

#5.  #MeToo.  The hashtag movement continued this year as big name actors, heads of companies and others were accused and brought down by the movement.  The behaviors in Hollywood and elsewhere toward women is long overdue for an overhaul and the MeToo movement has gotten the ball rolling.  Giving voice to those who felt powerless is an important step in making this a better world.

#4.  James Gunn fired from Disney.  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 was heading along for production when old tweets from director/writer James Gunn’s past were brought up by a right-wing pundit around the San Diego Comic Con this year.  Disney responded very quickly and fired Gunn from the project.  This caused a huge backlash among the online nation, but, despite backlash and unanimous support from the cast of Guardians (and rumored support from Marvel Studios), Disney never succumb to the pressure.  Gunn has since been linked to the sequel for Suicide Squad and Dave Bautista expressed his displeasure with the situation anywhere he could bringing his future as Drax into question.

#3.  The Snap.  Avengers: Infinity War became a massive hit, breaking the record for the largest opening weekend of any domestic movie, at over 250 million dollars. The biggest shock of the film was when Thanos finished compiling the Infinity Gauntlet and snapped his fingers, causing half of the population of the universe to go to dust.  This included, to the disbelief of all the audience members, Spider-man, Black Panther, Falcon, most of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Dr. Strange, Winter Soldier, Nick Fury among others.  With the film ending as a victory for Thanos, the appetite for Avengers: Endgame is all the greater.

#2.  Black Panther.  Black Panther made over $700 million domestically and went over $1.3 billion worldwide.  The cultural significance of Black Panther could not be questioned as the African-American community came out in full force to make this the most successful stand alone Marvel Studios film ever.  It is still significant as speculation is saying that Black Panther may be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, making it the first comic book movie to receive such an honor.

#1. Stan Lee passes away.  A sad number one this year as “The Man” Stan Lee died at the end of November, leaving behind a legacy of comic book characters unlike anyone ever had.  With the help of such artists as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, Stan Lee created the Marvel Universe and brought us character such as Spider-man, The Fantastic Four, Dr. Strange, Thor, Hulk, Black Panther, the X-Men, Dr. Doom, Ant man, the Wasp, Black Widow, Iron Man, Groot, Daredevil, Hawkeye, Loki, Punisher, Nick Fury, Scarlet Witch, Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, and many others.  Stan Lee was a beloved figure and everyone shared their memories of Stan and how he inspired them to do what they were doing.  Stan Lee inspired me as well, giving me my moral compass through Spider-Man and my imagination through his wondrous characters and stories.  Excelsior!  Nuff Said.

EYG 2018 Star of the Year

staroftheyear

2018 was a big year for cinema and most of the potential winners of the Star of the Year is from the big screen.

Previous Winners:  Gal Gadot, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jennifer Lawrence, Marvel Studios, J.J. Abrams.

#5.  Mahershala Ali.  Mahershala has had a strong year and he is prepared for an even bigger 2019 as the third season of True Detective is primed to be released on HBO and Ali is front and center.

#4.  Lady Gaga.  Her star turn in A Star is Born should net Lady Gaga her first Academy Award nomination, if not win.  She is one of the most amazing performers worldwide.

#3.  Chadwick Boseman.  As T’Challa, Chadwick Boseman became the symbol of a cultural movement that allowed young children to finally see the representation of themselves on the big screen.  He starred in two of the biggest movies of the year.

#2.  Emily Blunt.  She was unbelievable in the film, A Quiet Place and then she capped it off as the iconic Mary Poppins in Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns.

And the EYG Star of the Year….

#1. Josh Brolin.  He was Thanos.  He was Cable.  He returned in Sicario.  He was great in all three (even if Sicario wasn’t as good as the original).  He was at the center of pop culture in 2018 and deserves this spot.

Vice

Image result for vice movie poster

Vice is the story of Dick Chaney and how he became the most powerful vice-president the United States had ever seen.

Vice is written and directed by Adam McKay, who also did The Big Short.  There are many techniques that are used here that are used similarly to that movie.  The use of breaking the fourth wall and talking directly to the audience is used effectively again and again.

The film definitely has a left lean to it, but, as the film itself says, these are the facts.

This biopic follows the adult life of Dick Chaney (Christian Bale) through some early life drinking problems to public service (which could be argued about exactly what public was being serviced).  Amy Adams was his wife Lynne, who is shown to be loyal, remarkably strong and nearly as power hungry as her husband.  Steve Carell portrays Donald Rumsfeld, a man tied to Cheney throughout the years.  Sam Rockwell is President George W. Bush, who is shown as someone who just wanted to be President and was happy to have someone take some of the “heavy lifting” away.

The film is darkly funny.  You see the manipulative things Cheney did to get himself ahead and you wonder how he got away with it.  You also can see how we came to be in our current state of politics in the U.S. today.

The whole Iran deal really makes this group of people look terrible.  As if they cared more about their own goals than those of the country.  One wonders how close to the truth this movie comes because if it is close, these people are responsible for some terrible choices in American history.  History may judge them sharply.

In the middle of the film, SPOILERS… the credits begin to roll and it acts as if the movie was over.  It was a great and extremely funny bit, interrupted by a phone call to the Cheneys.  One wonders what would have happened had George W. Bush and his people had not decided to give a call to Dick Cheney.   How different would our world be or would someone else have stepped into the vacuum and been just as bad?

Also, the narrator (Jesse Plemons)…whoa.

Vice was entertaining and took a dark and controversial time in our countries history and was able to show both the outrage and the humor.  Adam McKay was able to once again use a difficult topic to create an entertaining movie.  It may be too political for some people’s taste, but I loved it.

Holmes and Watson

Image result for holmes and watson movie poster

I wish I knew how to start this review.

It is complete and total sh*t

How about that?

I have never been a fan of Will Ferrell, but every once in awhile he does a film that I do not hate, and I like John C. Reilly quite a bit so he helped elevate the hope.

No…no hope.  This is horrendous.

Ferrell plays legendary Sherlock Holmes and Reilly plays his companion Dr. Watson in a film that might have been meant to be a farce, but failed in every way possible.  The pair has to try to stop the evil Professor Moriarty (Ralph Fiennes) who has challenged them from preventing him from killing Queen Victoria (Pam Ferris) in four days.  These two then bumble around London trying to solve this mystery before the Queen is murdered.

Sherlock Holmes is shown to be a buffoon, loud and obnoxious, as if he were just any other character that Will Farrell ever plays.  Making Holmes an idiot could have worked, I suppose, if Watson was made to be the smart one, but he is every bit as much of an imbecile and Holmes is.

There is no humor in this movie.  Nothing but dick jokes and stupidity that might (and I say MIGHT) appeal to the lowest of lowbrow.  If you giggle every time someone says the word “penis” then you MAY find some of this funny.  If you want more from your humor, well, this is the wrong place to look for it.

The film was a slight 90 minutes, but it felt like it was forever.  And that was despite having the story flying by at a breakneck pace.  There was no time to set up jokes or to allow something to build up because we were on to the next unfunny moment.

The film even completely steals a joke from the Tick animated series.  When Sherlock goes to see his brother Mycroft (Hugh Laurie), Watson is taken to the Companion lounge to wait for him.  This is the exact joke of the Sidekick Lounge from The Tick episode Tick vs. Tick.  The difference is that the Tick episode took some time and milked the laughs out of the premise where in Holmes and Watson, it is nothing more than a sight gag.  If you’re going to steal a joke from someone, you should at least do it justice.

At IMDB, Etan Cohen is listed as sharing writing credit with Arthur Conan Doyle, EYG Hall of Famer.   I am sure that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is rolling over in his grave being connected to this travesty in any way, let alone as a writer.  Just imagining how this film treats the iconic Sherlock Holmes would fill Doyle with anger and disgust.

I was preparing to give this film 0 stars, but then the film tossed in a musical number with Sherlock and Watson singing and, while completely out of place for the movie, felt reasonably clever, and I did enjoy the song.  It was in the third act and really did not have any sort of consequence to the end of the movie, but it had cute lyrics and was catchy.  And it was not completely horrid as the rest of the film was.

Of course there was a vomit joke, which I absolutely hate, but why not.

The film tossed in plenty of current day allusions (selfies, Trump, women equality) into the 19th Century story.  They were clearly meant to be funny, but they all failed miserably.

There were multiple times that I considered leaving the movie, but I stuck it out until the bitter end.  I actively thought to myself that my bathroom break in the middle of the film was the best part of the movie.  The strong supporting cast (Ralph Fiennes, Steve Coogan, Hugh Laurie, Rebecca Hall, Kelly Macdonald, Noah Jupe) is totally wasted and I had to wonder what exactly Ferrell had on them to get them to be in this painful movie.

Save your money.  Go see Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse, Mary Poppins Returns, Bumblebee or Aquaman.  All are heads and shoulders better than this piece of crap.

Meme and Podcast of the Year- 2018

Here at EYG we love a good meme.  And 2018 had its share.  There were some good ones, from a frustrated LeBron James to #SluggoIsLit.  From Yodeling Boy at Wal-Mart to Gritty.  Baby Shark to Distracted Boyfriend.  We saw Theresa May dancing, a Royal Wedding, and the stupidity of the Tide Pod Challenge.  And could you change his mind?  Is it Yanny or Laurel?

However, the dankest of dank memes for the year 2018?

Everybody has a podcast these days.  Now, I did not count those podcasts that have YouTube videos as well (such as Collider Live, Fatman Beyond etc) .  Audio only here.  Here are the top three…

Every Tuesday, I tune in for the great movie discussions between John Rocha and Matt Knost.  They both bring a top 10 list, compare them and then combine them into a list for the show. It is engaging, entertaining and funnier than hell with two of the most charismatic and funny individuals around.  And they have recommended several great movies that I have had a chance to see.  Thanks to Matt and John for their time and their efforts.

The John Carter Memorial Award-2018

John Carter

Flop.

Every year they happen.  It is the unfortunate truth that is faced by movies in Hollywood.  Some times they will lose money.  You just hope that you aren’t ever in consideration for the John Carter Memorial Award.

There are some really good films that have fallen into this category.  Heck, some people would go as far as to argue for John Carter.  Not me, mind you, but I know some think that movie gets a bad rap.

However, with some movies and their inflated budgets, they are setting themselves up for failure.  There is a reason why Blumhouse has never had a film in consideration for this award.  Their budgets are really low and they make them back opening weekend even if they are not massive hits.

Other reasons for a film to be a flop could include poor scheduling, bad word of mouth, bad critical reactions, too much competition, limited appeal, too many risks, terrible marketing etc.

Previous winners:  John Carter, Alice Through the Looking Glass, The Lone Ranger, A Million Ways to Die in the West, Expendables 3, Jem and the Holograms, Pan, Rock the Casbah, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

This year there is several big name films that were in competition for the John Carter Memorial AwardThe Predator was quite a problem when it came out.  The quality of that film really hurt it in the long run.  The fact that they basically had to shoot Solo: A Star Wars Story twice meant the budget of that film was going to be sky high (rumored to be over $300 million alone).  The timing for The Happytime Murders was wrong as we have seen foul mouthed puppets before.  Even Oprah could not save A Wrinkle in Time from losing Disney money (despite the fact that Disney has plenty to spare).  Variety is reporting that Steve Carell’s Welcome to Marwen could lose $50 million dollars.  The Sister Brothers did not reach double digits in box office millions (around 9 million) which is massively underwhelming.

In the end, the John Carter Memorial Award came down to two choices and since there is precedent for a tie, I have decided to “award” both of these well-deserving flops the prestigious John Carter Memorial Award.

2018 John Carter Memorial Award “winners” are….

Robin Hood

and…

Mortal Engines

Both of these films have budgets in excess of $100 million.  Robin Hood has a little larger (current) worldwide box office result (but not by much) but Mortal Engines hasn’t been out as long.  Plus, Mortal Engines has a larger marketing budget as nobody was talking about Robin Hood.

Mortal Engines should never have been anywhere near the release date that it was at.  With the films being released in December, it should have pushed itself back like Alita did.  Robin Hood too came out on a weekend where it was going to be buried.  And it was.

And neither of the films had any positive word of mouth as reviews weer brutal for both.  All these lead to two flops in 2018.

Welcome to the group, Mortal Engines and Robin Hood.  Sorry.

First Reformed

There have been a lot of chatter about this movie being considered for Oscar nominations, for both the film and for Ethan Hawke, its main star, but I have to say, I am not seeing that.

Ethan Hawke is solid here, but I did not enjoy First Reformed very much.

Reverend Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a middle-aged pastor with a tragic backstory at a small church in upstate New York.  He spends his days giving tours of the church, which was once a stop on the Underground Railway.  When one of his parishioner (Amanda Seyfried) comes to him and requests that Reverend Toller talk with her husband, a radical environmentalist who could be planning something violent, a crisis in faith and hope springs into the heart of Toller.

The film deals with many weighty topics, including climate change and how the people of the planet are affecting the negative change and the church’s silence on the topic.  This felt a bit preachy, ironic I know.

Toller is also sick, suffering through a tumor that is slowly causing him to fade away.  The tumor continued to work on his faith as does his developing relationship with Seyfried to lead Toller to take some drastic steps.

Reverend Toller is having a crisis of faith and, perhaps even, a breakdown of some sort.  It is unclear how much the cancer that is destroying his body (if that is even a real thing) is causing this to happen.  There is a dream-like point of view throughout the movie that makes specifics difficult to maintain.

All I know for certain is that the film failed to maintain my attention very well and, despite a strong performance from Ethan Hawke, I was not happy with where the film was going.  Then, the underwhelming ending did not help in the consideration of the movie.  I have very little faith for this film.
