Live and Let Die (1973)

Live and Let Die (1973) - IMDb

And so begins the era of Roger Moore as 007.

Roger Moore was the James Bond I knew growing up.  Since I have not watched a lot of these movies for years, they do tend to blend together.  However, many of the memories I have from my childhood of James Bond comes from Live and Let Die.

Live and Let Die started down the path of taking James Bond into more of a campy, almost slapstick, route rather than the pseudo-serious super spy action of most of the previous Bond films to this point.  You can see in Live and Let Die the more reliance on gadgets and the wild situations, such as running across the backs of crocodiles, are even more ramped up.

Roger Moore fit with this quality of Bond and worked as the character is taken in this direction.  He had a lightheartedness about him that was different from Connery or Lazenby’s performances.

In Live and Let Die, Bond comes to investigate the deaths of three British agents who were investigating the heroin trade in America.  Specifically, the dealings of a crime lord named Mr. Big (Yaphet Kotto), the head of a small island country in the Caribbean.  Mr. Big maintained the services of Solitaire (Jane Seymour), a tarot card reading psychic, who gives him the skinny on the future.

Live and Let Die took advantage of the blaxploitation trend at the time, using several of the genre’s tropes and cliches.  The movie’s plot included the use of voodoo and the wild mystic villain named Samedi (Geoffrey Holder).

It also featured the weirdest chase scene in movie history.  Bond jumps in a speed boat and they begin a chase on the water.  That, in and of itself, is not strange.  However, as the boat chase started, it switched POV to a white, hick sheriff named Sheriff Pepper (Clifton James).  While I do not know this for sure, Sheriff Pepper made me wonder if he was an inspiration for the creation of Sheriff Buford T. Justice from the Smokey and the Bandit series.  It was bizarre to watch much of that speed boat chase through the eyes of this sheriff.  I know it is a divisive scene among Bond films, but I have to say it is one of the most memorable scenes for me.  I remembered Pepper from the first time I saw him.

Of course, the film featured one of the best Bond title songs, from Paul McCartney and Wings.  This is probably my personal favorite song among the Bond themes, and the filmmakers must have thought to themselves that “we have Paul McCartney” because they played the song multiple times in the movie.

This film kicked off Roger Moore as James Bond in a fun and energetic manner.  While there were some departures from the previous films, Live and Let Die holds its own place among the better Bond films and a door into the new world of 007.

Diamonds are Forever (1971)

Diamonds Are Forever – Movieposters.com

The Bond is back.

At least for one movie.  Sean Connery returned to the role of James Bond in Diamonds are Forever, which would turn out to be his final appearance as Bond until the 1980’s.

After having one film with George Lazenby as 007, Connery put the tuxedo back on to chase down his nemesis, Blofeld (Charles Gray), whose latest evil scheme is to steal a valuable assortment of diamonds to turn them into a powerful laser beam on a satellite.

Interestingly enough, Bond did not make any references to the dead wife at the end of the last movie, even though the cold open to this film was Bond violently in pursuit of Blofeld with very un-Bondlike tactics.

Sean Connery is, once again, a great Bond, even if he was starting to show some grey hair at his sideburns.

The story itself was fairly middling and lacked a lot of focus.  With Blofeld’s death in the cold open, it took away from the rest of the movie…especially when he shows back up later in the film.  He also loses a lot of villain cred because he simply needs to kill Bond when he has the chance.  Blofeld has had several opportunities to just shoot Bond in the head and keeps him around for some reason.  Maybe he, deep down, really wants Bond to stop him.  Bond movies are hidden psychological thrillers.

This does feel as if the franchise takes a turn into more of a cartoonish feel than the serious spy world here.  It is just waiting for Roger Moore to show up, I guess.

Scream 3 (2000)

Scream 3 2000 Original Movie Poster #FFF-73732 | FFFMovieposters.com

The third installment of the Scream franchise showed that there was more to the life of the series than you may have expected.

The movie Stab 3 is in production until a brutal murder happens to one of the actresses.  A second killing proved that a Ghostface killer has returned.  How is this killing connected to Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell)?

Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette) appear again as the killer is running around piling up the body count.

Honestly, there is nothing new here. In fact, most of the sequel is filled with stuff that we have seen already.  Still, that did not bother me that much.  The first couple of films in the franchise was as much of a deconstruction of horror films, especially the slasher genre.  This one does not deconstruct the horror movie as much as it does the horror movie productions.

These characters are familiar enough that you want to see them safe.  I do like the idea of how Sydney Prescott is paranoid and isolating herself from the world because of everything that has happened to her.  The events of the first two films had devastating effects on her and I like how they show that in her.

Wes Craven directed this and ended the Scream trilogy reasonably well.  Considering how successful the first film was, thought about as one of the best horror films made, Scream 3 ends out the series well (although there is more to go).  It is fine.

City Slickers (1991)

City Slickers 1991 U.S. One Sheet Poster | Posteritati Movie ...

I remember really enjoying this movie.  After watching it today, I realize that I absolutely love this movie.

City Slickers stars Billy Crystal, Bruno Kirby and Daniel Stern as three best friends who have been having their own troubles with real life.  So the trio look to find their smiles on a trip to drive cattle in the US southwest.

In this movie, the plot is pretty simple.  Honestly, the plot is inconsequential to the movie.  This is more of a character study with these three men who have been friends since childhood and how they have dealt with or have to deal with life.  The exchanges between the three of them are utterly brilliant and the dialogue draws the picture on who these men are.

From their discussions, we learn about their relationships with each other, with their significant others and with their fathers.  Each, seemingly silly, conversation has a deeper meaning delving into characterization for the three men.  It is a story of friendship and discovery.  No matter what was said or done, the three men were together and connected.

Of course, you can’t talk about City Slickers without talking about the great Jack Palance and his Oscar winning performance as Curly.  Palance brought an amazing presence to the screen with every moment Curly showed up.  Making the most of minimal screen time, Palance was a major force behind the story.

The other secondary characters were all fine, but not deeply developed.  However, everybody received their own moments that, while not deep, were character informing.  Oh, and Billy Crystal’s son is played by Jake Gyllenhaal.

Plus, the movie was extremely funny.  Billy Crystal was at the height of his game in this film and his witty banter made every line pop.  Although some might say When Harry Met Sally, for my money, this is Billy Crystal’s greatest lead performance.

City Slickers is character study that is a fantastic movie with comedy, drama and deep character development.  It has some emotional moments and really knows how to hit the feels.  It was better than I remembered.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969)

George Lazenby.

Mr. one and done.

James Bond was no longer Sean Connery (although he would be again).  Now he was a tall and lanky Australian.

Sean Connery had resigned from Bond during the filming of You Only Live Twice and sent the producers into a search for the new James Bond.  Lazenby accepted the role and, reportedly, was offered a 7 film contract. However, he decided to only do one Bond film because, according to Wikipedia, his agent had convinced him that “the secret agent would be archaic in the liberated 1970s.”

Hm.  Perhaps not the best advise ever given.

In the movie, Bond (George Lazenby) is in search for his old nemesis Blofeld (Telly Savalas), who was hatching his latest evil scheme.  This time, Blofeld intended on sterilizing the world’s food supply through the aid of his brainwashed “Angles of Death.”  Along the way, Bond met Countess Tracy (Diana Rigg), a daughter of a crimelord who had info on Blofeld.

The relationship between Bond and Tracy was one that was uncommon amongst the Bond movies.  Tracy felt like a complex character that we really did not get enough from.  The ending of the film focused on the connection between these two characters and drove home the emotion for them.  The final scene of the film was one of the tougher scenes in the franchise.

Continuity may have been a little iffy in this movie.  Bond and Blofeld went face to face, with Bond “undercover” and they pretended as if they hadn’t seen each other before.  Blofeld was also missing his scar from his appearance in You Only Live Twice.  I guess since both of them were new actors, one could argue they had not seen each other before.  It is just strange since they played it off as if Bond had been searching for Blofeld for awhile.

As for Lazenby, the first act or so of the movie was awkward for me.  I was watching him so much, trying to get used to him that he did not feel like James Bond, despite the efforts in the opening scene to really drive it home that he was.  However, that awkwardness melted away as the film progressed and I stopped seeing the differences and started seeing him as the character.  I actually liked what he did and how he took the character in a slightly different direction.

The film did take a couple of shots at Connery, as Lazenby saying that, “This never happened to the other fellow.”  There was a bit with Bond resigning from Her Majesty’s Secret Service only to receive a vacation.

There was a lot of great action, including some ski slope chases that were quite thrilling.  This movie was closer to the novel than some of the previous Bond films, which meant it was more realistic and less campy.  I found that to be fairly intriguing.

It was never going to be easy to follow Sean Connery in this role, but George Lazenby did an admirable job and, as I said before, the ending of this movie was uncommon and exceptional.  This was surprisingly good and makes me wish that Lazenby would have continued on with the part.

The Willoughbys

The Willoughbys (2020) - IMDb

The last animated movie that I watched on Netflix was Klaus in 2019.  That was my favorite animated movie from that year.  Is Netflix on a roll with animation?

If The Willoughbys are any indication, the answer to that question is a resounding yes!

The four Willoughby children, Tim (Will Forte), Jane (Alessia Cara), and the twins both named Barnaby (Seán Cullen) have bad parents.  I mean…really bad parents (Martin Short & Jane Krakowski).  Parents who neglect them and ignore them.  So the Willoughby children decide that the would be better off by themselves and they choose to orphan themselves by sending their horrible parents on an adventure around the world.  However, the parents hire the children a Nanny (Maya Rudolph) who may have an issue as well.

This movie reminded me very much of an animated version of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, only flipped backward.  There are some dark tones here as some terrible things are done and happen, but there is a positive theme underneath the negativeness.  It is also a very funny film, narrated by the Cat (Ricky Gervais).

The animation is very well done and the colors are off the charts.  The rainbow color theme is just the opposite of Lemony Snicket book series.

The Willoughbys is based as well on a children’s book and comes together extremely well.  It actually is a bit predictable, but it gets to that place in such an entertaining manner that I could forgive a few expected beats in the plot.

It did take awhile to get started, but once the film got going, I was engaged in what it was showing me.  A great voice cast, colorful animation and a clever written script made up for the predictable plot.  The Willoughbys is a fun time for a family.

Extraction

Extraction: Chris Hemsworth Netflix Action Movie Poster Revealed ...

On the one year anniversary of the release of Avengers: Endgame, we get the Russo Brothers, the directors of that film, producing something new with Chris Hemsworth (Thor) starring.  The movie started streaming on Netflix today.

Extraction, based on a graphic novel called Ciudad, is an action-packed, uber-violent, romp complete with amazing action set pieces and a breath-taking finale on a bridge.

The son (Rudhraksh Jaiswal) of an imprisoned international drug dealer is taken hostage by a rival group and Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth), a black market mercenary, is hired to extract the kid from one of the most impenetrable cities in the world.  When the extraction goes wrong, Tyler is forced to go to extreme measures to attempt to complete the mission.

Chris Hemsworth is great in this adventure.  You believe every moment of his war and his determination was beautifully portrayed.  What I especially liked was that they made Hemsworth’s Tyler more than just a highly trained killer.  They gave him a story that informed on the character, one that provided some serious feelings for him.

Because of this, and the connection made by Tyler with the kid, Ovi, you really rooted for them to make it through this seemingly impossible mission.  The few quiet moments between the two characters are really done well and help create the relationship that the film uses in the louder moments.

There was some humor in the film and it did not feel out of place.  The Russos have a great track record for being able to create stakes for their characters without making it totally doom and gloom.  There was a scene with the “Goonies from Hell” that made me laugh out loud.  There was not an overabundance of humor by any stretch as the situation did not call for it.  Still, it was there.

Directed by Sam Hargrave, a former stunt coordinator for the MCU among others, does an admirable job in his directorial feature debut.  The action beats are well set up and you never have issues seeing what is happening.

What really elevates this above other Netflix action films is Chris Hemsworth.  He has not had a huge hit outside of the character of Thor, despite usually being one of the best parts of the films.  Here he truly carries the film on his large-sized back.  There is a feel of old school 1980’s thrillers with action heroes busting through bad guys.  It is extremely violent and filled with great action and I enjoyed the film.

You Only Live Twice (1967)

Amazon.com: Connery James Bond Poster You Only Live Twice Pp31206 ...

The fifth James Bond film took a step down in quality for me as You Only Live Twice has some major flaws going against it.

In the height of the Cold War, someone is responsible for hijacking space shuttles, first from the US and then from the Soviet Union.  The British government believe that it is someone other than one of the two main powers and send James Bond (Sean Connery) to Japan to investigate.

We do officially meet Blofeld (Donald Pleasence), Number One of SPECTRE, who we have been teased about for the previous several movies.

The story of the movie is very thin and contains so many holes that you have to stretch credibility way too much.  The pacing of the movie is very shaky.  The first half of the film is dull.  The second half is ridiculous.

I did enjoy the pool of piranha in Blofeld’s chambers.  That was worth a couple of cool deaths.

Honestly, there were a few times where the film felt a little racist.  I do not think the film intended to be racist.  It was just a part of the time.  So I did cringe a couple of times looking at the film with 21st century eyes instead of 20th century ideas.

Roald Dahl was one of the writers on this film, which was disappointing because I did not find anything interesting here considering I really enjoy Dahl’s work.

I see on IMDB that something that I saw early was, in fact, true.  Early in the movie, when Bond was fighting a henchman in the office of Osato (Teru Shimada), I thought that the henchman looked familiar.  I thought that the man looked like “High Chief” Peter Maivia, a professional wrestler from the 60’s and 70’s, who was the grandfather of Dwayne Johnson.  Turns out that it was Chief Maivia.  The bond franchise has used several pro wrestlers over the years (including Professor Tanaka) in henchmen roles.  It was cool to see Maivia here.

I found this Bond film disappointing and it sure seemed as if Sean Connery had begun to be wavering on the role.

Popeye (1980)

Popeye 1980 Authentic 27" x 41" Original Movie Poster Robin ...

What in the blue hell did I just watch?

I watched the 1980 film Popeye, starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall, and I cannot decide if what I saw was a masterpiece or a total and complete mess.  Perhaps it’s both.

Just recently, Popeye longtime animator Gene Deitch passed away at age 95 and, when I saw the film on Netflix, it got me thinking about the movie.  I had never seen it, but I had heard some just terrible word of mouth about it.  Even Robin Williams had made fun of the movie.

However, I love Robin Williams, and I had heard recently some positives of the film from film critic William Bibbiani.  I had placed it on my queue on Netflix on the weekend that I had decided to do the Punish-Myself-Binge, but I did not get to it as the first four I watched that weekend ruined that concept for me.

Finally I decided this morning would be a good time to watch it.

Um…..

Okay, first of all, the casting of this movie was spot on.  As great as Robin Williams was as Popeye, I do not think I have ever seen a more inspired bit of casting than Shelley Duvall, the same year that she played Wendy Torrence in the Shining.  Duvall’s performance was as if the oddball character of Olive Oyl had leaped out of the comic strip and onto the big screen.  Paul L. Smith was a perfect Bluto.  Ray Walston, a personal favorite from Picket Fences and Eerie, Indiana, appeared as Poopdeck Pappy.  Classic character actor Paul Dooley was Wimpy.

I am watching the movie, trying to hear the constant mumbling by just about all of the characters, and then they started to sing and I thought, “Is Popeye a musical?”  Honestly, I am still not sure.  The songs were bizarre and different than I had ever heard in a musical.  That is not a bad thing, but I struggled in my head to classify it.  Perhaps the idea is that Popeye is meant to defy expectations.

The story is pretty much a group of scenes strung together to show the characters as a live-action cartoon.  We have Popeye arrive in Sweethaven searching for his pappy, meet Olive Oyl and her eccentric family (her father and his constant desire for an apology is a funny running gag), fight an unbeatable boxer, find Swee’pea, and fall for Olive.

The plot actually kicks into gear in the third act when Swee’pea is kidnapped by Bluto, because the baby has some future predicting skills and Bluto wants him to find the mysterious hidden treasure.  The entire cast of characters chase after Bluto and end up on an island with a giant octopus.

Director Robert Altman created a live-action cartoon that is certainly unlike anything I have ever seen before.  As a movie, I am not sure that it is any good, but as a piece of weird and strange entertainment, Popeye succeeds.  Musical?  Maybe not.  There are songs… sort of.  The village of Sweethaven is a masterwork in construction and the people that populates the village create a world that felt lived in and, about as real as could be.

I can certainly understand why people hate this movie because it is one of the weirdest experiences I have had watching a film in a long time.  That is not a negative.

Thunderball (1965)

Amazon.com: Posters USA 007 Thunderball James Bond Movie Poster ...

It continues to be amazing watching these early James Bond movies because you see all of the spy movie tropes in action before they became tropes.  In fact, these are the movies that inspired the use of these tropes.

Thunderball is the next Bond movie and it featured a villain with an eye patch, Largo Number Two (Adolfo Celi).  Eye patches always lead to evil villains.

James Bond (Sean Connery) returns to do battle with the criminal organization S.P.E.C.T.R.E., who has stolen nuclear warheads and is blackmailing England and the U.S. for money or they will detonate them.

Some have referred to Thunderball as the under water movie as much of the action takes place under water.  In fact, it received an Academy Award for Best Effects, Special Visual Effects for the amazing water scenes.  At the time, this was groundbreaking work.

Sean Connery continued to grow into the role of Bond, but you could begin to see the age start to show on 007.

Largo was anything but a well developed villain.  He was simply a one-note villain with an eye patch.  He is a step down from Auric Goldfinger from the franchise’s previous installment.

Thunderball may not have been as great as Goldfinger, or even the other two films prior to it, but it was fun and had some epic James Bond action.  The underwater third act action was unlike anything I had seen before.

Vampire State Building

Vampire State Building #1-4

Writer:  Ange & Patrick Renault

Artist:  Charlie Adlard

The COVID-19 virus has put a serious damper on my comic reading.  However, I was working on a Superdraft over at Hero Games Forum where we pick characters to fill out a potential story (which turned out to be my Fan Fic story here on the site called I Remember…) and I needed a vampire horde from comics.  So I went to Google and I did some research and discovered a four-issue limited series from a company called Ablaze named Vampire State Building.

As I did more research on this, I discovered that the art in the series was done by the artist from the Walking Dead comic series and everything that I saw about it looked interesting.

So, with my normal shop closed, I went to Amazon and found the four issue series, first printing, and ordered it.  It arrived the other day and I read it today.

I liked it very much.

It felt like it was the Walking Dead meets Die Hard with vampires.  The comic focused on the individuals/humans in the building and their struggle to avoid being killed by this massive horde of vampires.

However, it was not just a mindless horde of vamps as there was a purpose behind the mob.  There is an intriguing back story of the series and the vampires looked great.  Horror series seem to be hitting their stride recently with some the new books such as Something is Killing the Children and Tomorrow, and this one fits right into the genre.  The art is very reminiscent of the Walking Dead and does a fantastic job of creating a mood.

I might have like a little more depth to some of the characters.  The main two or three were well done, but there were a bunch that wound up basically sacrifices and I did not have much care for them.  I would have liked to see the story expand about an issue or so.

Still, this was a fun read, flowed well and had some great visuals.  There is apparently a bound version due out soon (if it has not yet been released) so if you want to give it a try, that may not be a bad way.

EYG Top 10 Movies Adapted from Plays

EYG23

Good evening all.  I am back with the next list as seen on the Top 10 Show with John Rocha and Matt Knost.  I do so enjoy these shows. This week’s list was one that, at first glance, I thought I may not be able to fill out.  However, I found plenty of possible films to make out my own top 10.

The topic this week was Top 10 Movies Adapted from Plays.  A couple of them sprung to mind immediately, but I did have to do some serious research on this topic.  During the research, I discovered a bunch that were base on plays that I had not known were based on plays.

There was a limitation placed on this week’s list however that did cause me some issues.  They decided that they would not include any plays that were musicals on this list.  Suddenly, a bunch of my choices were out.  I would be moving through the research and find one and then I realized that they were musicals.  Rocky Horror Picture Show, Little Shop of Horrors, Sweeney Todd…. they just kept coming.

Then, it made it worse.  I had Birdcage down on my prep list and it would easily fall into the top 5 of my list.  Then, John brought it up on his list and Matt said he had researched it and the original play it was based on was a musical.  So they eliminated it.  Ugh!!!

Still, I found the list of ten.  So here we go.

TIFF12: Much Ado About Nothing (2012) — 3 Brothers Film#10.  Much Ado About Nothing (2012).  This one is not the same one that John included on his list.  This is a version with Joss Whedon directing.  It includes Nathan Fillon, Clark Gregg, Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof and several other of Whedon’s normal crew of actors.  Filmed in black and white, this Shakespeare adaptation was funny and had that Joss Whedon flair to it.

Fences (2016) Recommended by agoodmovietowatch | agoodmovietowatch#9.  Fences.  I did not love this movie, but the two lead performances elevated this to a level that the film would not have reached without them.  Denzel Washington and Viola Davis are utterly brilliant and deserving of their Oscar nominations.  In fact, Viola Davis walked away with the Best Supporting Actress Award for this film.

Steve Martin's 'Roxanne' Was the Best Kind of Reimagining I ...#8.  Roxanne.  Steve Martin had a lot of great movies, but this one was one of the very best in his oeuvre.  The adaptation of the classic Cyrano de Bergerac story, Roxanne brought it to a new generation.    This film was a beautifully romantic film with some excellent comedy.  A great Steve Martin film.

11 Thrilling Facts About Dial M for Murder | Mental Floss#7.  Dial M for Murder.  The first Alfred Hitchcock movie on this list.  Grace Kelly is having an affair with her tennis instructor.  This gives her husband, played by Ray Milland, the excuse he needs to try to murder her so he could get his hands on her inheritance.  When his plan falls apart, he gets involved trying to keep the police from catching him.  Great film with the master of suspense.  Hitchcock will be along soon again.

Rope (1948) Movie Review from Eye for Film#6.  Rope.  In fact, here is Hitchcock’s second film on this list.  Rope is one of those films that I watched originally because of the Top 10 Show.  Jimmy Stewart appears in this film, which takes place in one single setting, an apartment in New York.  It is dealing with a murder that happens just before this dinner party that brings a level of suspense and psychological thrills.

Amadeus | Film Review | Spirituality & Practice#5.  Amadeus.  This was John and Matt’s number one film, but I do not like it as much as they do.  However, that does not mean that I did not love this film.  It is remarkably funny and the music is wonderful.  The basic story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (although it was highly fictionalized) was presented awesomely through the eyes of Antonio Salieri .

Dracula movie review & film summary (1931) | Roger Ebert#4.  Dracula.  This is one that I think may be a bit of a cheat, but, on research, I found out that this movie from 1931 was based on a play from 1924 which was adapted from the Bram Stoker novel.  So I am counting it!  This is a classic horror movie featuring the spellbinding performance from Bela Legosi as the Count.  There has never been a better Dracula movie since this one.

Frost, Nixon and Me | History | Smithsonian Magazine#3.  Frost/Nixon.  This one is an underappreciated film that is lesser known, but it was just a tremendous true story that I did not know about before this film.  Frank Langella’s Nixon is amazing and the interaction with Michael Sheen’s David Frost is the basis of the film.  The dialogue is just amazing in this quiet Ron Howard movie.  It really shows how important this interview was.

10 Deliberate Facts About '12 Angry Men' | Mental Floss#2.  12 Angry Men.  Another classic.  The Henry Fonda film that takes place strictly inside the jury room.  The film, which has been inspirational to many projects since, is such an exceptionally written film.  The dialogue of the movie has to carry the plot forward and create the tension and it does it so well.

Trump's Press Conference, Ego, and A Few Good Men - The Sensitive ...#1.  A Few Good Men.  The Tom Cruise/Jack Nicholson classic is one of my favorite movies.  The courtroom scene where those two actors faced off with one another is cinematic excellence.  The iconic scene with “You Can’t Handle the Truth!” is thrilling.  I love these kind of intelligent and thought provoking stories and A Few Good Men is right there.  Tom Cruise gives one of his best performances and feels as if he belongs opposite Jack.  Demi Moore is great here too as the somewhat naive JoAnne Galloway.  Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, and Kevin Pollack are great as well.  This is another one of the brilliant films directed by Rob Reiner.  I love this one.

Honorable Mention:  There were not a ton of extras here, but I considered Casablanca as one.  Moonlight from Barry Jenkins was another I thought about.  The musicals of course were in my head.  There were several that I had not seen before such as Glengarry Glen Ross.

EYG Top 10 Movies featuring a Witch/Wizard Re-List

relist

The Re-List returned today with a very interesting topic:  Top 10 Movies featuring a Witch/Warlock.  I liked this idea which was submitted by patreon Billy Guilliams.  The lists were compiled by Keith Fitzgerald and J Scotty St. Clair.  I am very jealous!

They did an excellent job too.  Spoiler alert, they gave full list of Top 10’s to Matt and John without having any duplicates, which I think is a Re-List first, if I am not wrong.  They also made suggestions that I had not considered until they mentioned them.  As soon as they listed a couple of their choices, that film went immediately on my own list.  There was some semantics for why I had left some off originally and when Matt and John let them go on the show, I was happy to include them.  The “sorcerer” vs. “Warlock/witch” argument being one major one.

I have a bunch of honorable mentions and, during research, I found a bunch that I had not seen.  Some, like The Witch, was not a film I loved.  I know it was pretty popular when it came out, but I did not find the appeal of it.

So.. The Re-List top 10…

The Kid Who Would Be King': Review | Reviews | Screen#10.  The Kid Who Would Be King.  Mentioned on the show as a film to give some love was awesome. This film did not receive enough credit as being a very solid show when it was released.  It was a clever re-imagining of the King Arthur story and it brought us a fun version of Merlin.  This was a great adventure involving young people and really deserved a better fate.  It included another good performance from Patrick Stewart.

The Blair Witch Project | Classic Film Review | Consequence of Sound#9.  The Blair Witch Project.  This appeared just last week on the Top 10 Show list for One Hit Wonder Directors and now it returns for a new list.  This thing was frightening, especially because, at the time, we thought it might have been real.  It is shot like a documentary and created such a buzz.  It brought us an entire genre of films as well with the “found footage” genre.

Bridge of Death | Monty Python Wiki | Fandom#8.  Monty Python and the Holy Grail.  This was one that I initially had eliminated from my research until it showed up on one of the guy’s lists.  Though I love this movie, the fact that the witch/warlock is not a vital piece of the film kind of dropped it down some for me.  Still, I just love this movie and find it completely quotable.  The scene on the bridge is just epic as all get out.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - Plugged In#7.  Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.  I limited myself to one Harry Potter film on my list and I chose Azkaban as that film.  I found it to be the most interesting of all of the them and I loved the performance of Gary Oldman as Sirius Black.  The film played with your head throughout and kept you wondering what was actually happening.  It was really the start of the movement to a darker world in the Harry Potter series.  I could see the argument for several other Potter films, this is the one that I go back to when the topic comes up.

Set Decor / Film Decor Features: HOCUS POCUS#6.  Hocus Pocus.  One of my favorite films from my younger days.  I can remember it was the last film I saw at our local drive-in theater (not a fan of drive-ins).  There is a great cast, including the young lead Omri Katz, who I loved on the short lived TV show Eerie, Indiana.  The witches were amazing, including Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker.  I still use the line “Amok, amok, amok.”

Dormammu I've Come To Bargain | Know Your Meme#5.  Dr. Strange.  This was another one that I never considered because he was a “sorcerer” and not a warlock.  As I mentioned earlier, semantics.  Still, I supposed I could see the argument and so, when Matt and John okayed it, it immediately went on my list.  I really loved the conclusion to this film because it was something that I had never seen before in a MCU film.  The whole “Dormammu, I have come to bargain” bit was pure genius.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) Review |BasementRejects#4.  Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.  I decided on only one of the LoR trilogy on my list as well and my favorite of those three movies were definitely the Two Towers.  I can remember the first time seeing this movie, I was completely engaged by the storytelling.  Every time they switched to a different story, they would stay long enough for me to wonder what was happening to another of the group, and then it would switch and I would be excited.  This featured Gollum, who I loved, and Treebeard, who I loved.  And the Battle of Helm’s Deep was just totally thrilling and perfectly executed.  Easily my favorite of the Middle Earth movies.

Images Of Wizard Oz Witch Melting | Bestpicture1.org#3.  The Wizard of Oz.  One of the greatest movies of all-time.  I can remember loving watching this every year when it came on and then, when I went to college, my roommate telling me that his mother never let him watch it because of the scary winged monkeys.  I was flabbergasted that someone had not seen The Wizard of Oz.  Looking back, there are definitely scenes that are very scary and I can understand monitoring it for children’s consumption.  The Wicked Witch of the West was just a frightening villain and her desire to kill that little dog too was just a lot.  Her death scene was just as horrifying.  Such classic work.

In order from most to least, which heroes does Thanos respect? - Quora#2.  Avengers: Infinity War.  This was another one that I had not considered until it was mentioned on the Re-List.  I chose this one over Endgame because Dr. Strange and Scarlet Witch have more to do in this film instead of just being in the huge fight at the end.  Mind you, they were both exceptional in the Endgame conclusion (especially Wanda who just kicks Thanos’s butt), but they drove story in Infinity War.  Wanda’s desperately pain-filled rush to destroy the mind stone and thus destroy Vision was heart-breaking, as was the fact that it was all for naught.  Dr. Strange told us that there was one chance in 14,000,605 to defeat Thanos.  While i love Endgame more, this one is right on its heels.

The Princess Bride 30th Anniversary - Max and Valerie "It Would ...#1. The Princess BrideHave fun storming the castle!  Any time I have a chance to put The Princess Bride on my list, I am going to do it.  It is my favorite movie (actually tied now with Endgame) of all time.  Miracle Max, played by Billy Crystal, brings the film to this list. Again, you could make an argument that he is not a warlock (the film called him a miracle man) but he does make a magic pill that has a chocolate coating to make it go down easier.  Again, as soon as Matt and John allowed this to make the list, I knew what my number one was going to be.  I am going to do a special watch when The Princess Bride debuts on Disney + on May 1st.  Until then, as you wish!

Honorable mention:  There’s a ton of these.  Of course, you have to remember Harry Potter movies such as The Death Hallows Part 1 and 2, The Order of the Phoenix, and The Half-Blood Prince.  They tend to run together however.  There is also the Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the  King.  Then the Jack Nicholson film The Witches of Eastwick nearly sneaked on in the number 10 spot.  Fantasia was considered to with Sorcerer Mickey.  I always enjoyed as a child the Escape to Witch Mountain series of films.  I saw some online consideration during research for The Conjuring, although I did not remember there being a witch in that.  It may have made the list if I could.  Rosemary’s Baby was listed online as well, but that was more Satan worshiping and demons than witches/warlocks.  The Dark Crystal was never one of my favorites, even though I am a huge fan of Jim Henson.  The Sorcerer’s Apprentice with Nic Cage was fine.  Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was good too.

I Remember…

I Remember…

Chapter One

How did we wind up here?

“Barricade that door!”

The butler and pilot slid the heaviest objects they could to barricade the door in a desperate ploy, praying that it would hold.  They both knew how truly hopeless the situation was, but they were not ready to give in to the despair that threatened to consume them.

My lord, please forgive my cursed soul for the sin that I will be forced to commit.

“This is my fault,” the pilot fumed after doing what he could to brace the entrance.

“Sir Blackhawk,” said the butler, brushing off his suit coat.  “That is utter nonsense. The plane was crashing. The only reason we are still alive is because of your skill as a pilot.”

“Alfred is correct, Blackhawk,” said Gabriel Van Helsing, peeking out the window.  He could see the fiery remains of the plane that the three of them had been in. The escape was not quite successful.   As the sun set on the horizon, Van Helsing saw the fog begin to form around the area. He knew what that meant.

“Is there any way to communicate with the outside world?” asked Alfred.

To the outside observer, Alfred Pennyworth appeared to be an English butler, but his facade hid more than that.  Skills that he kept hidden from the world for unknown reasons.

“There is none, Alfred,” said Van Helsing.  “This may have to be where we make our last stand.”

“I don’t mean to be the wet blanket here, Van Helsing, but you do know where we are, right?” asked Blackhawk.  “This may not be the most ideal location for a final stand.”

The Alamo.  An iconic site.  A story that all three men remembered.

“The irony has not escaped me,” said Van Helsing, “but we do not have any other choice.”

The fog thickened with each passing second, surrounding the San Antonio landmark, a location known for the brave but doomed.

“This is not the Mexican Army surrounding us,” said Alfred.

Few know that better than I.

Gabriel Van Helsing was a lonely man.  A man who was rarely in the company of allies.  His internal distress was constant, a hatred of what he had to become in order to continue to battle the monsters of the world.  His prayers, he believed, would fall upon deaf ears, but he continued to make them. Pray for his soul. Pray for his fate. Pray for the strength to do what was needed.  He choked down the contempt with each desperate prayer, no longer backed with faith. Then….
REMEMBER

“What did you say?” Van Helsing said, turning to his companions.

“What?  We didn’t say anything,” responded Blackhawk.

Neither of them had said what he had heard.  Van Helsing glanced around the Alamo. Shaking his head, he peered out the window.  The fog was so thick that you could hardly see anything… the remaining light from the retreating sun nearly blotted from view.  Van Helsing’s blood ran cold.

“Be ready,” said Van Helsing.  “It’s almost time.”

Chapter Two

Fog.  Thick.  Nearly immobilizing the city of San Antonio.

That was the purpose.

It was not immobilizing the figure strolling through the fog, the blue flames burning from his skull.  You could not tell, but he was Daemonite. His current Acurian body was considerably different from the lizard-like body that was common among his race.  He never went back. This form was powerful.

Power was what he wanted.  Power is what he desired. That was what he was after.  There were three men inside the building before him that would lead him to that power.  Staring through the fog to the flames that were consuming the plane that had crashed near the legendary building.  He did not know the legend of the Alamo, but, if he had, he may have appreciated the irony.

“Lord Helspont,” said a random Daemonite, looking at the man standing hidden in the fog a few feet behind Helspont.  He knew the hatred Helspont had for these humans. Yet it was not the human that was causing the concern from the Daemonite.  “Why have you recruited these blood suckers just to control the human? The Daemonites can control the human better than the vampi– “

Lord Helspont snatched the Daemonite before he could finish his statement, his powerful grasp clamping around the Daemonite’s throat.  He picked him off the ground.

“You dare question me?” Helspont said, the bolt of enhanced energy traveling through his hand and into the body of the Daemonite.  The creature twitched in Helspont’s grasp as the energy fried him from inside. The ashes tumbled to the ground and Helspont calmly brushed them off his hand.

“That was cold.”

Helspont did not turn to the voice.  Through the fog flew the vampire. Baron Blood landed beside him,

“Not saying that I didn’t like it,” Baron Blood said, his fangs punctuating his smile.  “I can confirm that the vessels are inside the building. Everything is ready.”

“Good,” said Helspont.

“Remember…  Lord… you promised me Van Helsing once you are finished with him.”

“I remember.”

Chapter Three

Peeking out the window once again, Van Helsing felt his chest filling with dread.  The fog was as thick as he had ever seen it, but the devilish red eyes still pierced through the haze, chilling him to the bone.  The sheer number of eyes made him mentally step back. Though his memory was anything but perfect, he had never seen so many of the bloodsuckers in the same location at once.

Reloading his crossbow and double checking his remaining weaponry, he turned to Alfred and said, “Pennyworth, here.  You may want to take this.” He tossed the butler two carved wooden stakes.

“Will this do me any good against Helspont?” he asked, already knowing the answer.

“Listen, I am not sure any of us will survive until Helspont comes in here,” said Van Helsing.

“I love your confidence, sir,” said Alfred.

“Just being realistic,” said Van Helsing.  “There is a swarm coming.”

“Then we need to take out as many as we can,” said Blackhawk, checking through his own guns.  “I’m not going down without a fight.”

“You’ve come around,” said Van Helsing.  “Good.” Blackhawk had been blaming himself for the failure of the plane crash, a crash that, if avoided, could have led them to escape.  There was no time for looking back right now.

“How about you, Alfred?  Have you ever faced off with vampires?”

“Vampires?” he said, with a smile and a fleeting memory to his ‘master’.  “No, but I must say that this is a tad ironic.”

“What does that mean?” Blackhawk said.

“Nevermind,” said Alfred.  REMEMBER. Turning quickly, Alfred looked around the room “What was that?”

“What was what?” asked Blackhawk.  Van Helsing had already turned away from this conversation, and Alfred shook his head.

“Again, nevermind.”

Meanwhile, in the fog outside the Alamo, Helspont waited for the vampires to be in the proper place.  By suggestion, he had enlisted Brother Blood as much for his horde as for any of his other skills. He was willing to put up with the vampire to accomplish this goal.  A green skinned man walked up behind Helspont, gently placing his hand on the Daemonite’s shoulder.

“It is just a matter of time, Prince Artis, before you have what you need to finally take your rightful place.”

Querl Dox smirked as his blonde hair dropped across his face.  He knew what he was after and he had the genius to get it done.  It had been too long since he left Colu and even longer since he found himself back from the future. He had adapted to life in the 21st century, but his grasp on the reality of his situation had never been completely balanced.

“Thank you, Querl,” said Helspont.  “Your council has been of vital importance to me. Your suggestion of Blood was inspired.”

The smirk extended into a full blown smile across the green-skinned face of Brainiac 5.

“Yes, it was,” Querl Dox aka Brainiac 5 was never modest.  He knew how brilliant he was, though he may not have been able to see how far he had fallen.  He was once a hero. Now, he was anything but. In his other hand, Querl held a chain which trailed back into the fog.

“He is secure?” asked Helspont.

“Of course,” Brainiac 5 said, dragging the weight at the end of the chain to the feet of Helsport.  The man was bound by the chain around both arms and legs.

Alec Swan, bound and gagged, looked through his swollen eyes at the four-color villains standing over him.  He rolled his eyes back into his head.

How come I always get mixed up with these goons?” he thought.  “I don’t know why I can’t just find myself an easy case…something natural or down to earth.  Maybe a cheating husband where all I have to worry about is getting some pictures and what to bring along to eat during the stakeout.  Nope. I get vampires and super villains.”

REMEMBER

Before Alec Swan, a private investigator with the unfortunate name Firearm, could react to the voice, Brainiac 5 pulled on the chain once more, refocusing Swan on his current problem. The head vampire had arrived back at the pow-wow and Swan was hoping to discover something to help him out of this situation.

I don’t like the way that thing is looking at me,” thought Swan.  “Like it’s feeding time at the farm.”

Baron Blood, gazing down at Firearm, said, “Would it be easier if I just controlled his mind like I did the other?”

“You would not be able to control his mind,” said Helspont, “because he is a vessel.”

Helspont quickly glanced over his shoulder and Querl Dox nodded his support.

“But I have him controlled,” said Baron Blood, gesturing into the fog.  Another man walked over, his eyes totally blank and emotionless. “Jim Corrigan.”

Swan saw the zombie-like man standing motionless beside the vampire as Baron Blood took a single claw and carefully scratched Corrigan across the cheek.  The man did not move. He did not react.

“Just do what Lord Helspont says, Baron,” said Brainiac 5.

“Of course,” he replied.  A slight drop of blood from the mind controlled man’s face dangled on the vampire’s claw and he licked it clean.  Swan grimaced and he heard that non-corporeal word once again.

Chapter Four

The siege was on.

Van Helsing cried out to his companions inside the walls of the Alamo that the mad rush was coming as the thought of history repeating itself in a monstrous rendition crossed his mind.  Red-eyed vampires and lizard-like aliens rushed from the fog, launching themselves into the walls with such force that the building shook.

Barricading themselves into a section of the Alamo, Van Helsing, Alfred Pennyworth and Blackhawk prepared for the worst, determined that they would not go down without a fight.  The spirits of William B. Travis, Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie were strong inside the room, but that did not build a sense of confidence or serenity.

As vampires crashed through windows, Van Helsing was trying to minimize the available entrances to the room, targeting his fire into the very spot.  Every vampire that fell to the side seemed to be replaced by three more. Even in the years he had fought the monsters galore, he had never seen such a swarm.  REMEMBER

Alfred Pennyworth had never been considered a third wheel in a fight by anyone who truly knew him.  His appearance did not reveal his skill, which was why he was always a valuable cog in the fight against crime in Gotham City.  He was both literally and figuratively miles from those fights now. REMEMBER

Blackhawk preferred the freedom of the skies.  The rush of flight and the feeling inside of power at maneuvering through the air, the wind in his face.  He was feeling desperately claustrophobic as the space was filling with creatures unlike those he had dealt with ever before.  Every bullet he fired made him more precarious about the intensifying situation surrounding him. REMEMBER.

Three men.  Unlike in many ways.  Yet three heroes. Men who would not give up.  They may not have known why this was happening or how they found themselves in this unwinnable circumstance, but they fought on.

Too much.  Too many. The swarm of monsters continued to prostrate them.

Before succumbing to the crushing mass, Van Helsing did wonder why none of these vampires were biting him, despite the cuts and the blood upon his body.

Then it was over.

Chapter Five

*SMACK*

“Wake up, Van Helsing,” the German accented voice said, “time is short.”

Van Helsing rolled his head and, no matter how hard he wished, he could not place his hand on his now throbbing face for comfort.  The reason was that he was securely bound in place by some form of rope. Alfred and Blackhawk were both in and out of consciousness and tied to stakes that had been driven into the floor of the Alamo.  Chunks of the walls had been torn asunder, scattered around the area.

A second slap echoed through the Alamo.

“I’m awake,” Van Helsing said, angered by the insult.  A large man with blue fiery flame from his head stood beside a green skinned man who had another man chained in a hump behind him.  These were people he had never seen before. REMEMBER.  What was going on?

“Good to see that you have survived for the moment.  You are a vital piece of the puzzle,” said Helspont, moving forward.

“Who in the hell are you?” Van Helsing said.  Alfred and Blackhawk were beginning to come around more fully and were taking in the desperate situation that they found themselves.  They were not dead, though, which was a plus. They were also pleased that they were not waking up as vampires, a consideration that they had made as they were succumbing to the horde of blood suckers.  REMEMBER

Helspont smiled.  Any other time such bravado, in particular coming from a human, would have led to him striking the man down, but he knew that Gabriel Van Helsing was necessary and he would commute his sentence for the moment.

“I am Lord Helspont,” he said, “and the four of you have something that I require.”

“I’ve never seen you before in my life, Lord,” said Van Helsing.  “And I only met those two when we were escaping from…” REMEMBER

“Yes?” smiled Helspont.

“Hugo Strange,” said Alfred.

REMEMBER

Yesterday

Van Helsing had tracked Baron Blood across the country.  The monstrous vampire had come on his radar recently and his mission required him to terminate the creature.

He had no idea what he was getting into.

He was also unaware that his arrival was not actually a surprise.

This was a castle, or at least, may as well have been one.  You did not find many of these in the States, yet here it was.  It was not the first castle he had sneaked into, but it was the first one he had entered with an airplane at the top.  He did not understand what he was seeing.

As he peered into the room, he saw a man working over equipment, deep in thought.  He had no clue who he was and only later would he hear that this was Hugo Strange. Baron Blood was there too, lurking in the shadows.  A few other vampires were in the place, seemingly under Blood’s control.

He also saw the man who must have been the pilot of that aforementioned airplane, and a man dressed as a butler, bound and tied besides the mad scientist.

“Alfred,” he said, “it will be just a short time until I have the power to finally rid the world of the Bat.”

Bat?  Is he trying to kill Baron Blood? Van Helsing thought.  That does not make sense.

“Baron, have you gotten the fourth man?”

“Of course I have, Hugo,” replied Blood.  With a glance, an unconscious man who had been chained up was brought into the room.

Firearm?  Van Helsing said.  He recognized him. They had briefly teamed up on one of his cases.  He was a private investigator. Alec Swan. Van Helsing knew him to be a good man.  Four men?  %$^%$

“The machine is ready.  Seize the day!” Strange said, slamming the button.  A massive jolt of energy leapt from the machine, snatching Van Helsing from outside the window.  The energy engulfed him and the pilot, the butler and Firearm. The four of them were pulled into a quadrangle at the outskirts of the energy, held in place.  Strange was laughing as the energy reached out once again, this time for something… outside.

In the middle of the energy, a white skinned man appeared, a green cloak hanging from his frame.

“The Spectre?” the butler said and Van Helsing barely thought about why the butler would know this ghost.

Before anything else could be said, the Spectre was torn into four pieces, one piece projected at each of the four men, barreling into their chests.  The pain was excruciating. It burned unlike anything that Van Helsing could remember. After an endless few seconds, the energy dispersed and the four men dropped to the ground.  A fifth man fell to the floor as well, from the place where the ghost had floated.

“What happened?” muttered Van Helsing, not able to remember anything from the last few seconds.  It was as someone had pulled a cover over his memory.

“Success!” screamed Strange.

But success was short-lived.  The word barely escaped the mouth of the scientist before Baron Blood was on him.  The fangs sunk deeply in as he ripped his throat out. Baron Blood buried his teeth into the soft flesh of the scientist as the warm, life giving plasma drained from his form.  Strange’s shocked screams were muffled from the monster and he slowly sunk to the floor.

Karma’s a bitch,” Van Helsing thought, looking at the others.  “Get up,”

Helping the others to their feet, Van Helsing turned to the pilot.

“Was that your plane I saw?” he said. “Can you get us out of here?”

“Yes,” he said.

The four rushed toward the exit of the room, however, Firearm was snatched by the other vampires before he could escape.  The other three could not stop as they were being pursued by a horde of vampires who seemed to come out of nowhere. Van Helsing hated leaving him behind, but they would not survive a fight right now.  They were too weak. If only they could get to that plane.

NOW

“You three attempted your futile escape just before I arrived.  I must say, I did not expect three heroes such as yourselves to just run off while you left Swan and Corrigan behind,” said Helspont.

“Who’s Corrigan?” Van Helsing said, growing irritated at being confused by what was happening.

“He was the Spectre,” said Alfred, once again showing off the knowledge that a normal butler would not have.  “He’s right over there.”

“Correct, Alfred Pennyworth,” said Helspont.  “He needs to be here as the anchor. You see, you are the vessels that I required.  The power of the Spectre is beyond mine and I want it. I could not have taken it on my own, but by splitting into fours, I can control the power…making the transfer easier.”

“Are you insane?” asked Blackhawk.

“Of course not.  Hugo Strange would have never been able to create the necessary equipment without Querl Dox…” started Helspont.

“Brainiac 5, you mean” said Alfred.

“My aren’t we Mr. Know-it-all,” said Brainiac 5.

“Yes, so as soon as Strange was able to accrue the four of you, he became quite expendable.”

Baron Blood smiled.

Slapping on some gauntlets handed to him by Brainiac 5, Helspont said, “And in a few minutes, the four of you will be expendable as well.”

Chapter Six

As the energy flew, pulling free from each of the men, their screams cut through the Texas air.  This mighty power, one that they had not even remembered they had, was being ripped from their bodies and heading toward the awaiting frame of Lord Helspont.

“This is intolerable,” Alfred said.

“Why do I get stuck with cases like this?” said Firearm, his chains slipping from his body.

“We only have one chance,” said Van Helsing.  “When this energy ends, we have to rush him. Hopefully, he will be unsteady and we can get those gloves off him.”

“You need another plan,” said Blackhawk.  “Look.”

The Spectre power was heading into Lord Helspont, but his face told the story.  There was something wrong.

“What is going on?” Helspont said, turning,”Querl?”

Facing Brainiac 5, Lord Helspont saw the bright white teeth shining through the green skin. He knew his mistake immediately.  Trust.

The power was going straight through Helspont and forming around Brainiac 5.

“Yes!” the former Legionnaire said , the power beyond his calculations pulsing through his muscles.  “It is mine!”

With a thrust gesture, Lord Helspont felt the remaining energy inside his chest explode outward, tearing him in two.  The lifeless lump of pieces that was Lord Helspont dropped to the ground at the feet of the cackling Brainiac 5.

“Now!” screamed Van Helsing as the four men leapt at Brainiac 5, a long green cloak manifesting itself around him, his skin quickly changing to a pale shade.  Brainiac 5 shrugged and the four men flew from his body.

“Baron,” said Brainiac 5, turning his attention to the vampire.  “Your assistance was so important. Thank you.”

A bolt of energy flew from Brainiac 5 and went cutting through Baron Blood and the other vampires in the room, turning them to dust.  The eyes of Brainiac 5 bulged in madness as he turned on everyone that had helped him. He did not care. He had the power.

“I am the Spectre!” he shouted, maniacally.

Without warning, he doubled over, grasping his gut.  The scream was filled with anguish. “No!” he said, as if he were fighting from within.

“What is going on?” asked Firearm.

As he asked, the group spotted Jim Corrigan behind Brainiac 5, his eyes clouded over, trying to pull the power of the Spectre home.

“Help me,” yelled Corrigan, and the four men lunged back at the new Spectre, grabbing hold of what they could.  They had no idea what they could do in the presence of such power, but they were determined to do anything they could.

With the hands of the four on Brainiac 5, and a seemingly strengthening Jim Corrigan holding on tightly, the energy coursed back through the “vessels” and headed back from where it came.

“You should have killed me when you had a chance,” said Corrigan, whispering in his ear.

The green cape withered away and began to reform around his last full host.  His skin turned white as Brainiac 5’s skin returned to the green. A final blast of green energy sent everyone flying.

Van Helsing looked up and the Spectre levitated slightly off the ground, Brainiac 5 laying on the ground before him.   He reached down and grabbed Brainiac 5 by the throat, pulling him up to his face. They could not hear what Spectre said to him, but, after a second, he turned toward the last remaining men.  A simple nod of the head was all the Spectre did and… he and Brainiac 5 were gone.

Van Helsing, Alfred, Alec Swan and Blackhawk looked around the Alamo, which was barely standing.

“What now?” said Blackhawk.

There was a long pause.  Finally…

“I guess all we can do is remember…” said Van Helsing.
