X-Men/Fantastic Four #1

The Impossible Boy: The World Has Changed

Writer: Chip Zdarsky

Artist: Terry Dodson

Cover Art:  Terry Dodson & Rachel Dodson

The new mini series bringing together two of the Marvel Universe’s top teams, The X-Men and the Fantastic Four.  In fact, the storyline involved in this issue is a stroke of genius and makes perfect sense bringing these two teams into the same orbit.

You see, the X-Men are living on their own little world now called Krakoa, where all mutants are welcome.  And Reed and Sue Richards have a son, Franklin, who is an omega-level mutant.  Professor Xavier and Magneto are drawn to the young teen and want him to come to Krakoa and Reed and Sue were not interested.

Immediate conflict.

Not just conflict, but conflict that stems out of character, because Franklin is having power issues, slowly having his power draining, and the mutants tap into that.  Now we have cracks in the relationship between the Richards and their son.  They brought back a connection with Franklin and Kitty Pryde from a previous mini-series.  Franklin’s sister Val, a human, is involved as well.  There can be some serious character development going on here if the writers allow it.

The art is different.  My friend at my comic shop said he disliked the art, but I found it interesting.  Some of the facial shots are iffy (looked as if some noses are odd), but the rest of the art is decent.  Sue Richards looks tremendously beautiful.  She is easily the best looking character in the book.

Chip Zdarsky has been great over the last few years and this only solidifies his run.

I really enjoyed this first issue and I have some high expectations as it continues.  This has so much potential to be really awesome.

EYG Top 10 Female Superheroes in Movies

EYG23

Fun show this week.  The Top 10 Show featured the Top 10 Female Superheroes in Movies and Matt and John were on fire.

I wanted to put some of the Agents of Shield or Jessica Jones on the list because I love them, but, unfortunately, they were not in movies.

SO… it’s the characters that appear in the movies.  There are several really bad ones though too. Sadly, some great comic characters were bombed massively in movies.

I will be doing this just like Matt and John did.  I have the character listed and the film where they are at their best.

Image result for dafne keen"#10.  X-23, Logan. She was basically called Laura during the film and you have to listen closely to hear the name X-23.  Played by Dafne Keen wonderfully, Laura was a complex character with a little girl who you didn’t know could talk for much of the movie.  Dafne brought a ton of heart into this amazing film.

Image result for shuri"#9.  Shuri, Black Panther.  Shuri was one of the biggest, most pleasant surprises from Black Panther.  Shuri, sister of T’Challa, was sweet and clever and turned out to be one of the most intelligent characters in the MCU.  Shuri is played by Letitia Wright and could have a great future in the MCU.

Image result for gamora infinity war"#8.  Gamora, Avengers: Infinity War.  The scene with Gamora and Thanos on Vormir was seriously amazing.  There was a surprising amount of emotion in the scene as Gamora first found the irony in the situation only to realize how her father truly felt about her.  There was also a great scene when she thinks that she has killed Thanos  in Knowhere and Gamora started to break down.

Image result for nebula endgame"#7.  Nebula, Avengers: Endgame.  Karen Gillan was amazing in Avengers: Endgame.  Nebula was one of the strongest performers in the film and her character arc was tremendous.  Her scenes with Tony Stark at the beginning was tender and funny.  She played two versions of Nebula, her 2014 self as well as the present version.

Image result for captain Marvel"#6.  Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel.  I like this movie more than a lot of people.  I have always enjoyed Brie Larson and I think she did an exceptional job as Carol Danvers.  I believe that she will only get better and better as the movies continue to build.

Image result for evangeline lilly wasp"#5.  The Wasp, Ant Man and the Wasp.  Evangeline Lilly is one of my favorite actresses and I am happy to see her as Hope Van Dyne.  Her relationship with Scott Lang is epic and she is simply bad ass.  Some of the scenes in Ant Man and the Wasp were really fun and she dominated the action.

Image result for Valkyrie marvel"#4.  Valkyrie, Thor: Ragnarok.  Tessa Thompson was a great find and one of the standout of the great Thor: Ragnarok.  Valkyrie had great chemistry with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and the Hulk.  The scenes with Tessa fighting Hela are beautiful.

Image result for wanda maximoff infinity war killing vision"#3.  Wanda Maximoff, Avengers: Infinity War.  She has never actually been called Scarlett Witch yet in the MCU, but she has become a personal favorite consistently each and every time she shows up.  I am anxious to see the WandaVision show upcoming.  I considered making the movie choice Endgame instead because Wanda was so epic in her fight with Thanos.  However, she had a great arc in Infinity War and her pain as she struggled to save and eventually kill Vision was palpable.

Image result for natasha romanoff endgame"#2.  Black Widow, Avengers: Endgame.  Scarlett Johansson has been great as Natasha Romanoff every time she appears on screen (except maybe Iron Man 2), but her self-sacrifice in Endgame was heartbreaking.  This film really brought the character through so many troubles and it was a perfect arc.  I am very excited to see her solo movie.

Image result for wonder woman"#1.  Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman.  I thought about not putting her at number one because I am such a Marvel fan, but I had to admit that Wonder Woman was a fantastic film.  While I was not a fan of the third act, the No Man’s Land scene was one of the greatest in comic book movies.  Although I doubted the casting, Gal Gadot made a believer of me with her performance of the Amazon.  Not only beautiful, but completely kick ass and thoroughly entertaining.  I hope Wonder Woman 1984 continues the momentum for her.

Honorable Mentions:  A few more to mention.  Hitgirl from Kick Ass is the best part of those movies.  Mantis from Guardians Vol 2 was funny and she has a great connection with Drax.  Okoye from Wakanda was another surprise from Black Panther.  I really considered Agent Peggy Carter because she is king of a spy like Nick Fury.  I mentioned Agents of Shield earlier with Agent Melinda May and Jenna Simmons and Quake because they are awesome.  So was Jessica Jones.  I hope these women find their way into the MCU movies.

EYG Top 10 Movies About Making Movies Relist

relist

Re-List… re re re re-list!

It has been awhile since I have done one of these, but with this week’s Re-List, Movies About Movies, sounded fun.  I am still hoping to get the call to participate in the actual Re-List one of these days, but until that happens, this will be my work.

I had a lot of films on the list here.  I was surprised that there were a couple that made my list that did not make either of the two list read on the show.  One in particular, my number two, that I was shocked was not there.  I’m sure Matt would agree with me.

Image result for tropic thunder"#10.  Tropic Thunder.  This film was higher on the Re-List list than on mine.  I liked this one, but may not have loved it.  Robert Downey Jr. was amazing here and the introduction of the “fake” trailers was wonderful.  Tom Cruise’s cameo in the film was another major stand out.  It is not a movie that I have gone back to much.

Image result for me and earl and the dying girl"#9.  Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.  This is one that I have only seen once, but I loved it when I saw it.  It was such a heartfelt movie and done brilliantly by the young actors involved.  Olivia Cooke, Thomas Mann and RJ Cyler were amazing in the roles.  There are emotional moments in the film and the movies they made were very funny.

Image result for get shorty movie"#8.  Get Shorty.  John Travolta is a mobster who has found his way to Hollywood in an attempt to make a script made.  There are a lot of inside jokes here, including great roles from Danny DeVito, Gene Hackman and Rene Russo.

Image result for shadow of the vampire"#7.  Shadow of the Vampire.  The fictional story of the filming of the silent movie, Nosferatu.  Willem Dafoe gives a stunning performance as the title “vampire” who turns out to be more real than anyone knew.  John Malkovich played the director who knew the truth but continued on in order to get the most realistic film possible.  It is a horror film and a good one.

Image result for boogie nights"#6.  Boogie Nights.  This is one that makes the list although it may not be one that I watch as much as some of the others here.  There are great performances in the movie from Mark Wahlberg to Burt Reynolds.  I don’t love this one as much as some, but there is no denying that this fits in this category as well as many other films.

Image result for dolemite"#5.  Dolemite is my Name.  Eddie Murphy is back big time with this awesome Netflix film based on the life of classic blaxploitation director Rudy Ray Moore.  Dolemite is My Name is hilarious and there are great performances from not only Eddie, but also Wesley Snipes and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

Image result for saving mr banks"#4.  Saving Mr. Banks.  The story of how the Walt Disney company made the Mary Poppins movie and how they got the rights away from author P.L. Travers.  Tom Hanks is great as always.  Emma Thompson is exceptional as Travers.  The songs fit nicely where they used them.  The backstory was better the second time I saw it.

Image result for disaster artist"#3.  The Disaster Artist.  I loved this movie.  It was the telling of how The Room was made.  The Room, one of the worst movies ever made, but that became a cult classic, was the passion project of one of the most enigmatic figures in movies, Tommy Wiseau.  James Franco is excellent in his portrayal of Wiseau.  The Disaster Artist was extremely funny, but it was funny because it took the relationship between Wiseau and his friend and co-star Greg Sestero seriously and not as a joke.

Image result for ed wood movie"#2.  Ed Wood.  This is the main one that I was shocked did not make any of the Re-List lists on the show.  The biopic on the life of filmmaker Ed Wood, who made some of the worst movies of all time including Plan 9 from Outer Space.  This movie is great top to bottom, including a great performance from Johnny Depp as Ed Wood and a transcendent performance from Martin Landau as Bela Legosi.  There is also a hilarious cameo from Bill Murray that really makes this movie even better.

Image result for singin in the rain"#1.  Singin’ In the Rain.  I just watched this for the first time last year and I was transfixed by it.  It was so remarkable and filled with movie magic that I loved every second of it.  Gene Kelly is amazing.  Donald O’ Connor is amazing.  Debbie Reynolds was amazing.  The musical numbers were engaging and entertaining.  Not just the music, but also the dance routines.  I loved the story of the film making.

Honorable Mentions:  There were a bunch of films for this section.  Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood I did not love as much as most, but I admit the scene with Leonardo DiCaprio and the little girl was astonishing and, most likely, the best scene in the movie.  7 Psychopaths was a lot of fun and is underrated.  I thought about including Hollywoodland, but I am not sure it was about anything more than the making of the TV show Superman with George Reeves.  The making of Psycho was the backdrop for the biopic Hitchcock.  I lied Argo more than some, and the parts with John Goodman and Alan Arkin are some of the best in the film.  The silent, black and white The Artist is one that most everyone has forgotten about but I had enjoyed it a lot.  This year, we have added Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which is more emotional than I expected.

Invincible

Image result for The invincible poster"

The second football film today is Mark Wahlberg’s role as 30-year old bartender Vince Papale who tried out for a position on the Philadelphia Eagles.  This true story took place in 1976,

Greg Kinnear plays NFL coach Dick Vermeil, the man who gives Papale his chance to make the team and stuck with him against the backlash.

The film is fairly by-the-numbers but it tells a great story of perseverance and grit.  How if you give your best effort and stay on target, you can accomplish your goals.

Yes, there are the typical sport movie cliches here.  Most of them do.  I would give a true story a little bit of leeway compared to a fictional one.

Wahlberg is good in the movie and Kinnear continues to do solid work.

While there is nothing that really stands out in Invincible, the power of the true story comes through above everything else.  It is worth the watch.

The Replacements (2000)

Image result for the replacements"

So, apparently, there is some kind of big game happening today.

Super Bowl LIV is today, with the Kansas City Chiefs facing off with the San Francisco 49ers.  In honor of the game, I decided to do a mini-binge on some football movies starting off with The Replacements.

A strike sends the regular players out of the NFL and the owners decide to enlist replacement players to finish the season.  Replacement coach Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman) brings in a crew of oddballs and has-beens, led by quarterback Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves).

There was a definite Major League vibe to the Replacements, though nowhere near as good.  The Replacements has some light hearted fun, but there are too many cliches or scenes that simply seem like something I have already seen.

The first thing that made me wonder about the movie was how the owner (Jack Warden) was shown as a good guy where as the players were millionaire jerks who just were concerned about money.  Football owners are billionaires so their complaining about football players making money feels pretty fickle… and the asshole athlete is a huge cliche.  Certainly something that we have seen plenty of times before.  And even with the owner making a power play at the end, that did not change how I thought of the beginning of the film.

The rest of the movie included all of the sports movie cliches that you have seen before.  There are not too many surprises.

I did like Pat Summerall and John Madden were fun in their roles too.

And there is no realism here at all.  That might not be the worst thing for a sports comedy, but there has to be some rules to the game.

My favorite scene though was the jailhouse dance scene to “We Will Survive.”  That was a fun and engaging moment.  They had a few light-hearted moments like that, but. overall, the film was forgettable.

Monk

Image result for Monk Adrian"

I have recently been watching clips on YouTube from one of my favorite TV programs of all-time that ran for 8 seasons on the USA Network, Monk.

Image result for Monk Adrian"I loved Monk.  The defective detective.  Adrian Monk, one of the most tragic main characters on TV.  Monk was played brilliantly by Tony Shalhoub, who won three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for the role.

The show was about a former police detective, Adrian Monk, who had OCD and just about every fear and obsession known to man.  When Monk’s beloved wife Trudy was killed in a car bomb, Monk’s obsessive compulsions went into overdrive.  He lost his job as a police officer.

Eventually, with help of his assistant, Sharona (Bitty Schram), Adrian Monk became a consultant to the police, solving crimes despite his problems.

Image result for Monk Adrian"Monk was a genius.  His power of observation was Sherlockian in practice.  He could look at a crime scene and see things that no one else could see.  Tiny little clues that would form together into a picture and Monk would utter that phrase, “Here’s what happened.”  And he was always right.

After a few years, Sharona left and she was replaced by Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard).  Despite loving Sharona and being upset when she let, I actually think I grew to like Natalie even more.

Image result for Monk Adrian"Monk had friends at the police station.  Captain Leland Stottlemeyer, played by Buffalo Bill himself- Ted Levine, and Lieutenant Randy Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford) make up the crew of four that the series focused on.  They had a ton of chemistry with each other and really worked as an ensemble.

Adrian Monk was perhaps the most tragic television character ever.  The loss of Trudy was never far from Adrian, who was sad and depressed, down on himself.  Yet this was countered by his brilliance, his unbelievable intelligence.

Most of the time, Monk’s problems were played as a joke, but the show was best when the humor came from the situation and the OCD was played with sadness and irony.  My least favorite times on the show was when Monk’s fears were made to make Monk look like an idiot.  He was never an idiot.  He just could not help himself.

Image result for Monk Adrian"The mysteries on Monk were the type where we knew who the killer was, but we did not know how they did it.  The fun was watching how Monk would figure out the crime and catch the “guy.”

There were some amazing episodes over the ten years.  One of my favorites was when Monk’s absentee father came back and Adrian and he went in his truck.  The episodes with Dale the Whale provided Monk with an adversary.  There was an episode where Monk met a cabbie who received an eye transplant from Trudy.  Adrian had amnesia.  We met Adrian’s agoraphobic brother.  He went on an airplane.  He went on the run.  They put him in so many situations and Adrian always found a way to solve the crime.

This show was as clever as you will find, with writing to match.  Throw in some wonderful performances with characters that you grow to love… well, Monk is a show unlike any other.  I do miss it.

Thank God January’s Over!

January in the movie world is always a month where the movie studios dump the films that are not … good.  Studios give us those films that are not expected to do much or maybe that has been waiting on the shelf.

January is notorious for bad movies.  Unfortunately, 2020 was especially poor.  In fact, I would go as far as to say that there may be 4-5 films released in January 2020 that could end up int he Top 10 Worst list at the end of the year.

There were two good movies in the month.  Bad Boys for Life surprised me in how good it was.  When I first heard that Bad Boys for Life was being released in January, I knew what to expect.  It was able to overcome those expectations.  The other great movie in January was streamed on Amazon Prime.  It was called Troop Zero.  A third film, Guy Ritchie’s The Gentleman was okay, the end of the film really saving it.

Then there are the Oscar films that come out wide in January, but these do not count.  1917, Just Mercy, Pain and Glory.  These are 2019 films that I only see in January.

The rest of the films…

The Grudge (2020).  Dolittle.  The Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson.  Gretel & Hansel.  Underwater.  The Turning.  The Rhythm Section.  A Fall From Grace.

Eight of them.  Some of these are just horrendous.  The Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson, which I streamed on Vudu, is perhaps in the Top 10 of my all-time worst list.  Dolittle had Robert Downey Jr and yet it was just a a trainwreck of a film.  The Grudge is a reboot that should have stayed unbooted.

Personally I was kind of enjoying The Turning until the ending sent that film tumbling off the cliff.  Netflix’s A Fall From Grace was probably the best of this sorry bunch.  Gretel & Hansel looked great but that does not excuse the lack of story.  Saw The Rhythm Section today and found it needlessly convoluted.

Thankfully, today marks the beginning of February.  Next week is the Birds of Prey film and things will now pick up… hopefully.

The Rhythm Section

Image result for rhythm sectionposter"

I knew very little to almost nothing about this movie when I went in to see it.  I knew that it starred Blake Lively and that was about it.

Blake Lively played Stephanie Patrick, a woman whose family was killed in a plane crash, which sent her spiraling into her own downward path.  At the low point, she is approached by a reporter who has information showing that the plane crash was actually an act of terrorism.  Stephanie set out on a path of revenge and winds up enlisting former MI6 agent B (Jude Law) to train her.

It is a ridiculous plot.  I never accepted the character of Stephanie Patrick as someone who was trained into being a competent assassin.  When we are introduced to her, she is working as a prostitute and seemed completely checked out.  Somehow, she is able to pull herself out of this life and into one of an international assassin after a few montages that were meant to illustrate several months.

Since I could not really accept the main character’s arc, the rest of the movie did not have much of a chance.  It did not help that the story then became convoluted and messy, with major coincidences and plot contrivances.

Sterling K. Brown arrived as well as a CIA operative that makes a connection with Stephanie, but his character is as simple as you could guess.  Very little is expounded about any of the other characters besides Stephanie, and to be honest, she is anything but deep.  In fact, at one point in the movie, B tells her that she is a cliche, and he was 100% right.

The action was not great either.  I heard some people saying it was well done, but I found it to be nothing more than shaky cam to hide what we were seeing.  There was one scene of a fight between Stephanie and B that seemed to be filmed as one-shot, but that fight lacked any consequences or stakes to be great and was missing any really cool parts to make it stand out.

Blake Lively did a nice job as the character, but there was just nothing there and the script was such a mess that I could not care one iota about Stephanie.  Any little bit of connection I felt for her was because of Lively.

There was a movie here that could have been more than the standard revenge plot. The film even touches on it when one of the hits go awry and leads to innocent people being killed.  However, that plot point is dealt with immediately, never to see the screen again.

This was lacking in many ways and signals the end of January movies (yay!).  Hopefully, things pick up as we move into February.

The Outlaw and his Journey that Changed the Movie Trivia Schmoedown

Outlaw

If you are not a Patreon for the Movie Trivia Schmoedown, you should immediately join up because you receive content like this documentary (as well as a ton of other awesome material).

SPOILER-FREE

Image result for The Outlaw John Rocha"John Rocha, known in the Movie Trivia Schmoedown as The Outlaw, is not only one of the greatest players in the history of the Schmoedown, but also one of the most impactful and influential performers to ever play the game.  So there are very few who deserve a documentary about their time int he Schmoedown more than John.

Personally, John Rocha is one of my favorite competitors.  He was one of the first to really embrace the character in the trivia contest.  It was not just answering the questions.  It was the promos, the character work, the intensity, the heel mannerisms of The Outlaw.  He is one of the most inspirational forces in the league and this new documentary, dropped on Patreon on Friday, January 31st for $10 tier and above members, does a remarkable job showing just how important John Rocha was to the evolution of the Movie Trivia Schmoedown.

I am not going to spoil anything about the documentary because I want everyone to see it on their own (join up at patreon.com/schmoedown).  Kristian Harloff, chairman of the Schmoedown, has said that he plans on keeping this documentary as a Patreon exclusive.  I know that I was very happy to have been one to see it today.

Image result for The Outlaw John Rocha"The documentary features all of the big names of the Schmoedown giving their honest thoughts and backstage impressions of John Rocha.  Such notable competitors as Ben Bateman, Dan Murrell, Samm Levine, Rachel Cushing, William Bibbiani, Kevin Smets, Mike Kalinowski… just to name a few talked about Rocha both in front of the camera and backstage and how he drove himself to become someone who would be found on the Mount Rushmore of the Movie Trivia Schmoedown.

The documentary did not shy away from some of the controversial moments of Rocha’s Schmoedown career either and the section on these moments where John faltered was one of the most inspirational parts of the doc.  I will say that, for a moment, I was worried that they were just going to brush past that without going into depth on the rochatopic, which would have felt as if there was a hole in the narrative.  However, they did these moments justice and, by looking at them, show how much perseverance John Rocha has.

Congratulations to everyone at the Schmoedown Entertainment Network (SEN) for this documentary.  It was 51 minutes long, directed by Eric Rodriguez, aka NerdChronic, and it was a wonderful analysis about a beloved figure in the show’s history, a man whose Schmoedown career helped to shape what the Schmoedown has become over the last four or five years.  Heel, face or tweener, John Rocha, ups and downs, never failed to be real or genuine.  It is why the audience of the Movie Trivia Schmoedown has gravitated toward John Rocha.  The Outlaw has gravitas.

MINOR SPOILERThe only thing I would have like to have had was some comments from John’s long time partner Matt Knost, from Top 10.  That felt as if it were the only thing missing here.

Gretel & Hansel

Image result for gretel and hansel poster"

The new film based on the Grimm’s fairy tale, Hansel & Gretel, from director Osgood Perkins is called Gretel & Hansel which is a very dark version of the child’s tale.

The film is more about the character of Gretel (Sophia Lillis) than it is about Hansel (Sammy Leakey).  They are still brother and sister, Gretel older, and they still found the witch (Alice Krige) in the woods.  Then Gretel is truly the main character and becomes kind of the apprentice of the witch.

And that is about all there is in the plot.

The film looked fine.  In fact there were actually some really great visuals.  The cinematography and the visual images are above average and definitely the strongest aspect of the film.

Unfortunately, the film was boring and there was very little with the characters.

I really disliked most of the film.  The performances were decent.  Sophia Lillis was solid with what was given for her to do.  The music was good too.

None of the good pieces worked together though.  I disliked it so much. I do not really have much more to say about it.

This must be Misty Knight week because she was everywhere.  She was in Captain America.  She was in Jessica Jones: Blind Spot.  And she is a major character in Ravencroft #1.

Ravencroft #1 has a definite Thunderbolts vibe to it, which I think was a really great thing.  The use of John Jameson and the questions involving his alter ego Man-Wolf are interesting.

I like all of the combinations of characters that kept showing up in the issue and I am excited to see what this mini-series will continue to be.

This is my favorite book out right now.

After two issues, I love the world that they have built with Jessica Jones and the mystery of what is going on is so compelling that I really do not know what is going on.

Last issue it looked as if Jessica Jones had been shot in the head and killed.  Now, she appears to be fine, but she believes that she was dead.  But unsure why or how.

I love the guest stars, from Luke Cage to Doctor Strange and seeing how Jessica Jones interacts with them was awesome.  The voice of Jessica Jones as the books’ narrator fits so perfectly.  Jones’ thoughts and banter about the rest of the Marvel Universe are funny and just brilliant.

I am thoroughly entertained by the first two issues of the comic and I cannot wait to see where this story goes.  Congrats to Kelly Thompson and Angel Unzueta for this excellent comic.

The G.O.A.T- Schmoedown Season 7

titlepage

SPOILERS FOR MOVIE TRIVIA SCHMOEDOWN LIVE EVENT IN NEW YORK

Last night, the Movie Trivia Schmoedown kicked off their seventh season with a live show in New York with a pair of matches.  Drew Ghai defeated Robert Meyer Burnett in the undercard and, in the main event, there was a triple threat match with William “The Beast” Bibbiani vs. “The Kid” Brendan Meyer vs. “Dangerous” Dan Murrell.

Murrell1The greatest of all time (aka The Goat) Dan Murrell won what is arguably one of the greatest triple threat matches of all time, 27 points to 26 points (The Kid) to 25 points (Bibbs).

There is something truly special about Dan Murrell.  He is my personal favorite Schmoedown competitor among a group of wonderfully entertaining people, but it is more than my own like or dislike.  He exudes respect.  He is as honorable of a man as you are going to find.

MovieFightsI was introduced to Dan Murrell on Screen Junkies’ Movie Fights Live program.  This debate show took movie topics and the competitors would argue their choices for the topic.  Dan Murrell was the fact checker on the side couch.  He would keep the debates in control, filling in information for the audience.  Covering the social media as well, I would love every time that Dan Murrell would give me a shout out from my Tweet about the show.  He also would step in to fight some weeks and he became the Movie Fights Live Champion because of his intelligent, cohesive and complete arguments.

It is about this time when the Schmoedown started its expansion and the first match they promoted was Dan Murrell vs. John Campea.  They promoted this intriguing match as AMC vs. Screen Junkies and they did them with a series of trash talking videos, first from John Campea, and then by Dan Murrell.  I remember being very excited to watch this match, with my allegiances solidly with Dan.

Murrell dominated that match-up and he started his first run in the Schmoedown, becoming the Movie Trivia Schmoedown Champion.  Through some great rivalries with “The Outlaw” John Rocha and Mark Reilly, Murrell cemented himself as a champion.  He eventually stepped aside, going into a retirement that we all hoped would not be permanent.

Thankfully, it was not.

5horsemenMurrell was re-introduced as a new member of the Five Horsemen, along with former rivals Rocha and Reilly.  After a major shock of losing to Andrew Ghai, it seemed as if Dan might have had the Schmoedown pass him by.  However, he did not just step away again never to be seen again.  Instead, he began to figure out what it took to compete in the new world of the Movie Trivia Schmoedown.  It would not be wrong to say that Ghai’s heel antics disturbed and bothered Dan, and he had to figure a way to change the way he played the game.

ghaiwinsghaiwinsDan Murrell is always up for a challenge.

There were ups and downs in the next few months, but he found his footing and Dan defeated the seemingly unbeatable Edwin Erwin at the New York live event last year, scoring a perfect game.

Last year was hugely successful for Dan Murrell as he defended that title once, won the Free-4 -All, won the team titles with John Rocha and ended the year announcing a new challenge:  entering the Innergeekdom division of the Schmoedown.

However, fate entered the orbit of that man referred to as The GOAT.  Season 7 was scheduled to start with another live event in New York featuring the Innergeekdom championship on the line as champion Kevin “The Smasher” Smets defended against Dan’s lady love, Mara Knopic.  Unfortunately, health issues for Mara forced that match to be delayed.  Schmoedown Chairman Kristian Harloff approached Murrell to headline the event in a triple threat match.

finstockExchangeEven though it meant he had to delay his entry into Innergeekdom, Murrell accepted the challenge.  The winner of the match would be the number one contender for the Movie Trivia Schmoedown Championship and would receive a championship match in Atlanta on February 29th vs. current champ Ben “The Boss” Bateman, who happened to be a member of the Finstock Exchange along with Dan.

The level of play in this triple threat match was remarkably high, with each competitor only missing one question each.  Dan and The Kid missed theirs in the first round and William Bibbiani missed his in the second round.  The problem for Bibbs was that the question he missed could be stolen by his opponents.  Both Dan and the Kid got that steal and earned an extra two points.

That was the complete swing of the match.  Bibbiani had a perfect round one and was ahead 9-7-7 going into round two, but that steal gave Murrell the lead and put the entire game into his own hands.  All he had to do was answer his three questions in round three correctly and there would be nothing that Shazam (Bibbiani and The Kid’s team name) could do about it.

Not that there was not controversy and awkwardness in the match.  There was a series of challenges made that took away from the momentum of the match, but, many times, the strategy of the challenge is used as a way to change momentum, not for actually questioning the validity of a question.  Bateman is the current master of this strategy, something he criticized Bibbiani for on an episode of SEN Backstage.

challengeYou can see Dan get frustrated every time a challenge was made.  It made me think of the old days on Movie Fights when Angry Dan would come out and would blast whoever needed blasting with an epic rant.  But as the mind games were playing out around the stage, Dan did not let it get to him.  I kept saying to my screen, just answer your questions, Dan (not that he could hear me, but it was my way of supporting him).

There was one challenge in particular, coming from Bibbs, who I love by the way, about Dan’s answer for the actor who played the owner in Jurassic Park.  Dan answered Sir Richard Attenborough and Bibbs challenged that it should have been “Lord” Richard Attenborough instead.  This was the one time in the match that the crowd turned on Bibbs, but I believe he was being honest in his challenge.  However, there is no doubt that it was meant to try and shake Dan as well.  The challenge was denied and Dan got the points.  Interestingly enough, Dan turned out to be right, as Attenborough had not received the title “Lord” until about a month after Jurassic Park was released.

winnerDan weathered all the ridiculousness of the challenges without letting it knock him off his track and, coming down to his final 5 point question, if he answered it correctly, he would win.  It came in the dastardly category of Movie Quotes, one category that typically could be very difficult.  Not this time as Dan knew the answer and wound up winning the match.

In the post match interview, Bibbiani was asked if Dan Murrell was his Kryptonite. He responded that if that were so, it would only affect him, but Dan Murrell affects everyone. He compared Dan to a deadly weapon that should be registered with the government and only be used in self-defense, not against good, nice people like the Mouthy Mercs.  Then he turned, pointed to the Kid and said, “How could you Dan Murrell this?”

Dan always carries himself with such dignity and he clearly respects everybody involved in everything that he does, it is almost impossible not to root for the man.  He is the ultimate “face” character.  Actually, he is not a character.  “Dangerous” Dan Murrell is simply who he is.  A deeply competitive man who carries himself with class as every competitor, in whatever competition you are involved in, should.

The match next month: Ben Bateman vs. Dan Murrell for the Movie Trivia Schmoedown Singles Championship could be one of the best of all-time.  Dan has a chance to become a four-time Singles Champion and be double-belted. There is something about a live crowd that brings the best out of the GOAT.  He is currently undefeated at live shows.

It is as if every year, the GOAT adds to the list of accomplishments that only solidifies him as the greatest of all-time.  And that is not just movie trivia.

The Gentlemen

Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, Jeremy Strong, Michelle Dockery, and Henry Golding in The Gentlemen (2019)

The second movie I saw today was director Guy Ritchie’s new film, which turned out to be one of the most Guy Ritchiest movies we have seen in awhile, The Gentlemen.

The Gentlemen featured the story of Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey), a British weed kingpin, who is trying to sell off his organization to Matthew (Jeremy Strong), while Chinese rival Dry Eye (Henry Golding) tried to get involved.  Meanwhile, private detective Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is telling a story about what is happening to Mickey’s right hand man Ray (Charlie Hunnam).

That summary paragraph is tough to read, I know, but the movie itself is very convoluted in the plotting which makes summarizing it difficult.

In an opposite situation to the other movie, The Turning, that I saw today, The Gentlemen started slow and I was not in to the movie.  Most of the first half to two-thirds of the film felt dull and dragged for me.  There was some good dialogue during this time, but I was just not engaged or interested.  I actually considered once about heading home.  However, the film really wound up the story well, interweaving the plot contrivances and the story beats into a rousing finale.  I came out of The Gentlemen feeling positive about the overall presentation.

It goes to show how important a final act can be.  A movie could be totally saved by a strong finish, despite being a film I considered leaving.

Matthew McConaughey worked as the week lord of Britain and a cool overall dude.  Charlie Hunnam might have had the best role of his career here.  But my personal standout was Colin Farrell, who played Coach, a trainer of young men who gets wrapped up in the intrigue of these criminals when his young men knocked over one of Mickey’s marijuana farms.  Farrell’s performance was exceptional and stood out among a solid cast.

I am not sure I enjoyed the style of the presentation of this movie.  There was a lot of exposition from Fletcher and I found that dragging badly. It was when that narrative style choice ended that I believe the film began to turn around.

Despite the fact that I came out of this with a positive note, I have a feeling that it will not be a film that sticks with me for a long time.  A strong ending helped make this work, but I wish the whole film was as good as the last 25 minutes.

The Turning

Brooklynn Prince in The Turning (2020)

I saw two movies today and it was a weird coincidence.  One was pretty good and then had a miserable third act that totally ruined it for me whereas the other one was slow and dull for the first part but really came together in the end, saving it for me.

I’ll start with the one that had the third act that ruined the movie.  Ladies and gentlemen… The Turning.

Based on the novel The Turning of the Screw, this film sees Kate (Mackenzie Davis), a young governess, hired to look after and teach a young girl named Flora (Brooklynn Prince) after her parents had died.  Her mischievous brother Miles (Finn Wolfhard) returned from private school to cause trouble.  However, the estate in which the children live is apparently haunted.

I came into this with low expectations, which probably helped the first couple of acts.  I was somewhat in on the story because I expected that there may be something mysterious happening.  And the film was being shot well.  They avoided the typical jump scares and seemed as if it were heading towards some kind of psychological horror movie.  It got my hopes up.

Understand that the first part of the movie still had its issues.  Flora was afraid completely of leaving the estate because she thought she would die, and I do not think that Kate ever once asked her about it.  When things started going wrong, Kate could have easily left at any point.  There is a point where she thinks about it, but it seems to me that she would have gone way earlier.

Kate felt as if she was over the top a lot, and, as a teacher, you would think that she would have had a better grasp on how to deal with a misbehaving child like Miles.  She immediately treated him poorly, snapping at him as he was disturbing his sister’s studies.  That moment did not do any good at creating a relationship between her and Miles.

So there were issues, but it still felt as if the movie had a plan on where they were taking it. Au contraire.  The third act came along and turned into a confusing, convoluted mess with a ghost and a mishmash of the story up until this point.

And worse yet… the ending totally blew any good will the film may have still had right out of the water.  Honestly, it was one of the worst endings (if you want to call it that) that I have ever seen.  I am just flabbergasted that the movie thought this was a good idea to end this movie as it did.

Mackenzie Davis was fine, but she felt as if she was overacting.  Finn Wolfhard and Brooklynn Prince were effectively creepy.  The housekeeper (Barbara Marten) was probably the standout in the movie, creating a character that clearly had more knowledge than the others in the story and looked sufficiently scary.

While, for a while, I was on board with The Turning, it took a hard left and derailed any potential enjoyment I may have had.  Unfortunately, the last third of the movie out weighed the other parts in this case and ended with a very negative feeling.
