I am currently watching the series 13 Reasons Why on Netflix.  Based on a young adult book written by Jay Ashur that I read last year, the show is very powerful.  Dylan Minnette who plays the lead character Clay is bringing a remarkable performance to this series.  The show does a solid job of creating 13 episodes from one normal book, and I am completely addicted.  I have just finished episode 9 as we are discovering the truth behind the tragic party that would lead to the suicide of Hannah that the book/show is based upon.  Netflix has another binge-worthy show added to its lineup.

Image result for shiva attacks the SaviorsSpeaking of suicide, last week’s season finale of the Walking Dead featured the suicide of Sasha, but for a completely different reason than Hannah.  Sasha had been placed in a coffin by Negan and she took the poison that had been given to her by Eugene.  She made sure that she was a zombie by the time that coffin was opened up, shocking the crap out of Negan.  But that was not the only shock Negan had coming as Shiva from the Kingdom made its presence known, causing Negan to yell out, “They’ve got a tiger!”  Plus, we had the garbage allies turn traitor against Rick and his forces.  The finale had its ups and downs, but everything is set up for the next season to be full fledged war.

Image result for shinsuke debuts on smackdownWWE RAW and Smackdown had the fallout from Sunday’s Wrestlemania.  The return of the Hardy Boyz being probably the biggest moment from the PPV.  We also saw the main roster debuts of The Revival, Shinsuke Nakamura, “The Perfect 10” Tye Dillinger.  The crowds were, once again, the best part of the shows as they are just completely active and chant whatever they wanted.  Some find that annoying, but, to me, the live crowd makes the action all the better.  Then, Vince McMahon showed up and told the live crowd on RAW that next week they were going to have a “Superstar Shakeup.”  That is not a draft, folks, but I am guessing it will be similar.  Since that, the WWE has announced that the Superstar Shakeup will run over both RAW and Smackdown.

Image result for aida is madame hydraAgents of SHIELD returned this past Tuesday and introduced us to the weird world of the Framework.  Daisy was known as Skye and sleeping with Grant, who was alive, working for Hydra, but leading the resistance against them.  May was one of the top agents of Hydra.  Coulson was a college professor who turned in the troublesome Inhumans.  Fitz was Hydra’s evil Doctor.  Simmons was dead and in a mass grave.  When Simmons climbed out of said grave, you knew things were picking up.   And we found out that Madame Hydra was here as well…and she was Aida.  Welcome back, Agents of SHIELD, I have missed you.

Image result for huck in water and shot scandalHowever, the biggest super hero of the week had to be Huck from Scandal, who apparently can not die.  With three bullets in his chest and locked in a trunk of a car that has been submerged in a lake, Huck is able to get free and not drown.  Now, I am glad that Huck survived his ordeal, because he was always one of my favorite characters (at least in the first couple of seasons before they turned him into a psychotic killer), but his survival stretched credibility a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong way.  I’m also not overly fond of what they did with Quinn.

Image result for feud bette and joan OscarsJessica Lange really stood out this past week on Feud: Bette and Joan.  You could feel every bit of emotion of Lange’s Joan Crawford as she prepared for Oscar night and her plan to make sure that Bette Davis was not going to walk away with Best Actress.  This episode was must see and really should be Jessica Lange’s Emmy reel.  And, the great dame was breathtaking as the silver Oscar.  Feud continues to be one of the most amazing shows on television, continuing FX’s run of brilliant shows.

Image result for season 5 bates motel episode 7Bates Motel presented the interaction between Norman Bates and his brother Dylan and it was as twisted as you can imagine.  Norman showed that he really did love his brother despite the craziness that is his alter ego, Mother.  And the scene where Norman, afraid that the police was coming to search his house, took the body of Norma and buried it in the woods was as chilling as you could imagine.  Bates Motel is flying towards the finale as Norman called in to confess to the police about the murder of Sam Loomis.  Anything is possible with Bates Motel.

I love how ABC just keeps bringing episodes of Match Game to fill holes in their lineup.  It is currently airing Sunday nights at 8 PM Central after being on Wednesday at 9 Central.  Match Game is so much fun that I hope it stays around wherever in the lineup they can fit it for years to come.

Happy viewing this week.  There is 24 Legacy coming to its penultimate episode, the Superstar Shakeup, Collider Movie Trivia Schmoedown’s Free for All, Riverdale, Designated Survivor, Speechless, Trial and Error… so much more.

This past week also revealed to us that August 18, 2017 would be the debut of The Defenders on Netflix.  Can’t wait!

Personal Shopper

Image result for movie poster personal shopper

I am honestly not sure what was going on here.  All I know is that Kristen Stewart was fantastic.

Kristen Stewart is no longer the butt of all the jokes for her acting skills that went on display in the Twilight saga.  She has come far from those films.  She has been pretty successful in supporting roles and secondary characters, but this performance was haunting as the lead character.

Unfortunately, the story itself was extremely weird and all over the place.

Maureen (Kristen Stewart) was the personal shopper of a famous model Kyra (Nora von Waldstatten), but she is also a medium trying to reconnect with her twin brother who had died of a heart attack.  Maureen had the same genetic imperfection of the heart that claimed the life of her brother, but she is told that she was in no danger.  Oh, this takes place in Paris, by the way.

She continues to buy dresses and try to connect to the afterlife, when she begins a conversation via text message with a mysterious person that encouraged Maureen to try on the model’s clothes.  This carried the film through the second act, but when the actress wound up brutally murdered, the film took another weird twist.

I have to say, the film started slowly, and I was finding it dull, but when the text messages started, I began to become engaged.  It was strange and mysterious and you were not sure if this was some weirdo just out to get to Maureen or if this was some otherworldly specter communicating through the phone.  However, this section of the film seemed to wrap up remarkably quickly as soon as Kyra’s dead body was found, and it was never returned to.  I am not even sure exactly what had happened with it.  I think the film inferred that it was Ingo (Lars Eidinger ) behind it all, but it was not clearly dealt with and just rapidly tossed aside as a plot point.

The ending of the film was complete garbage, going out of its way to be confusing just for the sake of confusion.  I am not sure the film even knows what had happened in the story.

Of course, throughout the entirety of the uneven film, Kristen Stewart was really good.  She has laid claim to the mantel of an actress to challenge anyone in films.  She showed so many levels of emotions and drew in the audience at every step.  If Stewart was not in this film, Personal Shopper would be one big mess.  As it is, the film is not very good, but her performance does elevate it to a higher level.

Going in Style (2017)

Image result for going in style movie poster

Sure, there may be some serious issues in play here, but this movie is basically fluff, starring three of our favorite older movie stars.  And that isn’t all bad.

Going in Style stars Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin as lifelong friends Willie, Joe and Albert.  After thirty years doing factory work, Joe was facing losing his house, while all three were losing their pensions.  However, when Joe winds up at the bank when it was being robbed, he gets an idea.

Heading to his friends, Joe suggests a bank robbery of their own.  Willie, who was in need of a kidney transplant, is the first to join in, but Albert needed more convincing.  When he discovered that the bank was taking his pension money to pay other bills, the proverbial straw had broken the proverbial camel’s back.

This movie is nothing special.  The story stretches credibility and nothing surprising happens.  The strength of Going in Style was the three wonderful actors in the lead roles.  In is fun to see Freeman, Caine and Arkin interact that you forgive the weaknesses that float around this film.

The movie itself is remarkably disposable, and will probably be forgotten fairly quickly.  Yet, these are three masters of their craft and they bring enough gravitas to pull the film into the positive category.  Add to them a fun role for Ann-Margret as Annie, a friend of Albert who wants more from him, and the cast is certainly a strength.  I really enjoyed the cute coupling of Arkin and Margret.

The jokes are pretty standard, focusing on jokes about older people, even having Christopher Lloyd playing an almost demented old guy.  Matt Dillon was here as a dimwitted FBI agent and our new Tick, Peter Serafinowicz appeared as Joe’s ex-son-in-law.

And the heist was pretty hard to believe.  The heist included a weird scene between Willie and a little girl that was meant to only set up the final act.

There could have been something really special here as the story had some serious situations come up early on.  The problem was these problems were cast aside, and the tone of the film was pretty inconsistent.  This film could have been a sharper, darker comedy that had something serious to say about the manner in which we treat our elderly people in America and the situation of banks and big business screwing over the little guy.  Unfortunately, Going in Style settled for the unremarkable instead of the satirical.

And yet, despite these problems, the charm of Freeman, Arkin and Caine really shone through and helped make Going in Style more than it should have been.  It is no where near as strong of a film as it could have been, but still, behind the star power of its lead roles, this film turns out to be a fun time.

Today is Wrestlemania Sunday!

The preshow for Wrestlemania 33 starts at 4 PM CST, so I am getting this column out a little sooner than I normally do.  Wrestlemania is a big day for me and I am looking forward to tonight’s event.

Image result for kurt angle wwe induction celebrationEspecially since the lead up to Wrestlemania has been excellent.  Friday night, on the WWE Network, we had the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony.  Yes, it was long, but I really enjoyed everything about it.  From the return of Eric Bischoff and Jim Cornette to a WWE stage to the induction speeches of Beth Phoenix, Diamond Dallas Page and Kurt Angle, the Hall of Fame always delivers emotion and enjoyable stories from behind the curtain of the world of professional wrestling.  Kurt Angle celebrated by pouring two jugs of milk over himself (much like Stone Cold Steve Austin used to do with beer).  Beth Phoenix introduced her husband, the Rated R Superstar Edge (Adam Copeland) and her beautiful little daughter in a poignant moment of the night.  Also inducted were the Rock and Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson), Diamond Dallas Page, Eric LeGrand (received the Warrior Award), Ravishing Rick Rude, and Teddy Long.

Image result for nxt takeover orlandoThen, Saturday night on the WWE Network, NXT presented its latest NXT Takeover Special, from Orlando.  This show is always a great night of wrestling and always has crowds way into the action, and this night was no exception. It has an early Match of the Year candidate when NXT Tag Team Champions The Authors of Pain defeated DIY and the Revival in a triple threat tag team match that was off the chart.  We also say Asuka retain her NXT Women’s championship with a little dirty tactics vs. Ember Moon.  And we topped it off with “Glorious” Bobby Roode defeated Shinsuke Nakamura in the NXT Championship match.  Roode-Nakamura was hard hitting and would have been considered a brilliant match had the triple threat tag match not been on the card.  Take Over has certainly set the bar for Wrestlemania.

wrestlingfightsThis past Tuesday, in preparation for Wrestlemania 33, TV Fights transformed into Wrestling Fights for one night.  Roxy Striar hosted the show that saw Billy A. Patterson defeat Joe Starr and Danielle Radford in a match of wrestling geekdom.  They fought best WWE superstar of all time, most anticipated match at Wrestlemania 33, and Worst storyline ever.  TV Fights is consistently entertaining on the Screen Junkies Plus streaming service and I really enjoyed the specialization during this week.  It was announced that they would do another wrestling themed TV Fights the week of SummerSlam.  YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!

However, there was more than just wrestling themed entertainment on television this week.

Image result for grimm series finaleGrimm brought its series run to a close on NBC with a finale called “The End.”  I used to watch Grimm regularly, but it faded from my watchlist a few years ago.  I was always feeling as if the season long arcs were basically the same arcs just repeated with different characters facing basically the same challenges.  Still, I enjoyed the early years of Grimm so I wanted to check out the finale.  And, with the exception of some poor child acting, the show came to an acceptable conclusion.  Our heroes came to a happy conclusion and they showed us the future of Grimms were well in hand.  I must say, I was confused as to why they kept calling Juliette, Eve.  Of course, when I stopped watching Grimm, Juliette had just been killed so I assume some weird mojo was going on.  It was cool to see these characters one more time, especially Monroe, who was always a personal favorite.

Image result for legion finaleAnother show coming to an end, albeit only as a season finale, was Legion.  David was able to rid himself of the parasite known as The Shadow King, but not without a cost.  Now, the Shadow King found its way into the body of Oliver, who rode away into the world to cause problems another day.  Not killing the Shadow King is a good choice.  Many times, these super hero shows kill their villains and waste the potential for a lot of future shows.  Not Legion which ended its 8 episode season with a post credit scene that saw David being kidnapped by some flying ball/robot.  Legion has been a trippy ride all season long and I am looking forward to season two.

Image result for bates motel shower sceneOn Bates Motel, the show recreated the iconic shower scene, with Norman Bates going full psycho on a hotel guest.  However, as a twist, Rihanna, who was playing Marion- the victim from the 1960 movie- was not the occupant of the shower.  Instead, it was Sam Loomis, the husband of Norman’s latest “love” interest. Sam had been having an affair with Marion and wound up on the other end of Norman’s iconic knife.  It was a surprising twist and now opens up the remaining few episodes of Bates Motel for any sort of conclusion.  Perhaps Alex Romero can finally find some justice for poor Norma.  Also, Norman’s brother Dylan FINALLY discovered that Norma had died.  The show referenced it as two years prior.  TWO F’N Years?  Come on, Dylan… pick up a phone, man.  I expect a huge finale for Bates Motel.

This upcoming week is a big one as well.  We have the Walking Dead season finale tonight.  Wrestlemania 33. The RAW after Wrestlemania is always one of the biggest shows of the year.  Tuesday will see the return of Agents of SHIELD.  Then we have Feud, Riverdale, Designated Survivor, American Crime.  Major League Baseball begins!  All kinds of excitement.

The Zookeeper’s Wife

Image result for zookeepers wife movie poster

The horrors of the Holocaust have been outlined in many films over the years.  Many of them are really well done, while others are not.  The latest version of the film fall smack in the middle.

The Zookeeper’s Wife tells the true story of Antonina Żabińska (Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh), a family living at a zoo in Poland who helped around 300 Jews escape from the dreaded Warsaw Ghetto.  After Poland is occupied by the Germans, Antonina and Jan have to report to Hitler’s chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühl), who takes a shine to Antonina.  His presence at the zoo makes it even more challenging for the Żabińskas to help the people that they were to help.

Jessica Chastain is wonderful in the lead role.  Chastain brings the power to her performance not only with her scenes with her male co-stars, but also with the animals that seem to be free throughout the film.  Whether she is cuddling with beautiful lion cubs or helping a new born baby elephant to breath, Chastain is amazingly believable as an animal handler above all others.

The scenes of the bombing of the zoo and then the extermination of the animals later because they “would not survive the winter” were brutal and hard to watch.  They also provided a stark comparison to the manner in which the Nazis treated the Jews.  The film also metaphorically compares the animals in the zoo with the Jewish people being kept in the Żabińska home, a zoo of a different type, but still a way to protect the inhabitants.

The scenes shot at the Warsaw Ghetto was a terrible reminder of how horrible these situations were.  The film does a good job of portraying the overcrowded location, and showing the blatantly disgusting environment that these men, women and children were forced to withstand.  The scene of the children being lifted onto the train by Heldenbergh, with the knowledge of what would come for these people, was heartbreaking.

This is another good film about the horrors of the Holocaust.  This is a period that we must always remember.

The Boss Baby

Image result for boss baby movie poster

I think most kids, especially the younger ones, will enjoy The Boss Baby, featuring the voice talents of Alec Baldwin.

However, I did not enjoy this much at all.

I suppose I am not the target audience for this film, however, Pixar, Disney and many other successful animated studios have shown that they can make entertaining films that appeal to both young children and adults.  The Boss Baby is simply not in that league.

Tim (Miles Bakshi) has a great life with all of his parents’ attention.  That is, until a new baby brother comes along.  However, there is something odd with the suit-wearing baby.  Tim discovers that the Boss Baby can speak and that he has arrived from his company with the hope to prevent the release of a forever-young puppy that will tilt the scale of love available to the side of the puppies and away from the babies.

Of course, Tim has been feeling jealous of the attention now being showered upon the new sibling so he teams up with Boss Baby so they both can get what they want… Boss Baby out of the house.

This film is needlessly confusing.  There is a lot of fantasy segments included in the film and it really tends to blur the line between fantasy and what is really happening.  In fact, at the beginning of the film, I was sure the whole film was going to turn out to be one big dream by Tim, and, honestly, I’m not convinced that that isn’t exactly what happened.

The voice cast is acceptable, with Alec Baldwin as the standout.  However, Jimmy Kimmel and Lisa Kudrow, two very funny individuals, were regulated to pretty unfunny roles as the parents of Tim.  Tobey Maguire provides the voice over narration, much like you might have had in the Wonder Years, and he is fine.  Steve Buscemi appears as well later in the film.

The film’s animation is pretty well done, and I do like the way the animation switches to a different style during fantasy segments.  Still, it probably caused confusion in the story telling as well.

There is a good message to the film as well, as it tells kids that, just because there is a new baby in the house, your parents are not going to love you any less.  I am sure that is a message that would resonate with many young children so the movie should be commended for that.  But I am a long way from those days and that message is not directed to me.

And that message gets lost among all the poop, puke, hit in balls jokes that are scattered throughout the film.  Again, humor that the 8 year old might find hilarious, but is actually quite tedious for me.

The Boss Baby wasn’t as bad as it could have been, but it is not something that I would want to see again, nor is it something that I expect to remember much about later in the year.

Ghost in the Shell (2017)

Image result for ghost in the shell movie poster

I had never seen the Anime animated version of Ghost in a Shell, so I went into the new film, starring Scarlett Johannson, completely free of expectations.  I have only seen a minimal amount of trailers even for this film.  I was the proverbial blank slate.

Unfortunately, I was not that impressed with the live action version of the Japanese film.  Honestly, I was pretty bored through most of it.

Major (Scarlett Johannson) is the first of her kind.  In a world where everyone had some kind of cybernetic enhancement, she was the first person to have her brain inserted into a fully synthetic body.  The “ghost” in the “shell” if you will.  Then we tried to find out stuff about her past while she does missions for the organization she was involved in.

I have to say that I did not know what was going on wit this movie for much of the first two-thirds of the film.  Because of that, I really found it dragging and I may have even been on the verge of dozing off once or twice.

This was not the fault of Scarlett Johannson, who was very good as Major.  There was a lot of controversy over her casting with the claims of whitewashing dogging the film.  Johannson, who really needs to lead a Black Widow movie soon, was good here, but, admittedly, I believe there were several actresses who could have done as much as she did here.  I understand why the studio chose Johannson though as she looked amazing all the time and she would definitely be a bigger name draw than other actresses that might be in the role.

The backdrop of the movie was spectacular.  The vision of the film was outstanding, with the creation of the world being clearly where most of the CGI budget went for Ghost in a Shell.  However, the CGI was not completely breath-taking as there were several scenes, action ones in particular, where the CGI stood out as obvious.  The visuals of the world behind the action was beautifully displayed consistently though.

The story itself was long and dull and dragged along at a snail’s pace.  It felt remarkably long despite it not being that lengthy of a film.  They do touch upon the theme of “what is life”, but there is not enough detail to that theme to really make it worth it.

I must say that one of the moments early on when I perked up was when the villain Kuze (Michael Pitt) showed up.  He piqued my interest at first as I enjoyed the visual presentation of him.  However, he was switched out of the villain role about halfway through the film and is replaced by a much less fascinating figure and what little good will I had built up with this character had been tossed aside.

In the end, I did not enjoy a lot about the, admittedly beautifully designed, Ghost in the Shell.  The story was weak, the tone was inconsistent and the acting was okay.  The action scenes varied between decent and CGI spot fests.  I hope the fans of the Anime and the original animated version of this film find this satisfactory, but as someone who has none of that background knowledge, Ghost in a Shell was not a good film.

The TV Week That Was

spoilers

Welcome back to The TV Week That Was, here at EYG, and I am going to start with some complaints.

Image result for flash musicalThe Flash musical episode.  I like musical episodes of television.  The Buffy the Vampire Slayer “Once More With Feeling”, Batman: The Brave and the Bold “Mayhem of the Music Meister”, Multiple Simpsons episodes… had special musical episodes.  The Flash seemed like a great idea since both Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist were on Glee (as was Darren Criss) and could sing and dance and they had former Broadway stars Jesse L. Martin and Victor Garber in the cast.  However, I found the hour to be lacking in many ways.  I did not think the story was worth the time.  I was disappointed in the music, not only the songs but also the amount of them.  With the exception of the song with Jesse L. Martin and Victor Garber, the songs were poor.  I actually thought some of the humor and writing of the show was solid, but the music was just weak.  Maybe I should give it a second viewing to see if my opinions continued to be as they are, but as of now, I disliked the musical Flash show.

Related imageThen, Scandal.  I was very disappointed with the “shock” ending of this show.  I saw that one coming completely.  The show was focused on Huck.  Olivia (continuing to be one of my least favorite characters on the show- how she has fallen) told Huck to murder her father.  In the process of Huck doing that, Rowan revealed the conspiracy behind why he killed the President. Huck discovered that there was a traitor in their midst.  So Huck went about eliminating suspects.  He got to his new girlfriend.  He scared her, but in the end believed her to be innocent.  And he then took her to see her friend, Jennifer Fields, the woman who was believed to be killed by Jake but wasn’t.  And she promptly shot Jennifer and Huck.  I saw that twist coming and was disappointed when they went ahead and did it.  Even though there was a cool surprise after that with Abby being revealed as the person behind this all (even though that felt very much out of character for her), the rest of this episode was very frustrating.

However… there was some really great stuff as well this week.

Image result for shadow king legionLegion.  What a great episode.  This was the penultimate episode in the first season, and we get confirmation that the monster/parasite in David’s mind is indeed the Shadow King.  They specifically said the name Shadow King, as well as his real name Amahl Farouk, in the episode.  This was a true geek out moment, as was the hint of David’s real father.  We saw a wheelchair with an X on the tires.  We comic fans know that David’s birth father is Charles Xavier, and this is the first indication that Professor X will also be the father on the FX series.  The whole David talking to David in a classroom with blackboards illustrating the history of the Shadow King was epic.  Legion has been an existential trip all season long.  It has been confirmed that Legion has been picked up for a season two.

Image result for feud bette and joan episode threeAnother great show on FX currently is Feud: Bette and Joan.  The Sunday night show is only on the third episode, but it feels as if it has gotten better with each episode.  Jessica Lange is tremendous as Joan Crawford.  The show has already reached the end of the filming of “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.” I’m curious to see where this show will go from here, but I am completely engaged in it.  I love Feud and Ryan Murphy.

Image result for trial and error nbc episode 3 and 4I was not convinced about Trial and Error, the new comedy on NBC featuring John Lithgow after the premiere, but the next two episodes were shown on its normal night and I am all in.  I actually was laughing very loudly several times.  Now, I must admit that I think the Sherri Shepherd character with her inability to see faces and to laugh at the inappropriate times is going to be a joke that is going to be old soon.  Despite that, I like the mystery of what is actually happening and John Lithgow is completely charismatic.

Image result for felicity huffman AMERICAN CRIME'I caught up with the new season of American Crime.  I don’t know why American Crime, which is shown on ABC on Sunday night, is not available on Hulu, but I was able to catch up on Amazon.  Felicity Huffman has been on all three seasons of the anthology show and I was amazed by her performance in the second episode.  The new season has several story lines going on, but Felicity has carved out a spot on this show as a great actress.

Image result for Top Ten vs. schmoes team match schmoedownThe Movie Trivia Schmoedown had a pretty good week this week on Collider Video on YouTube.  The Tuesday match was a return match between The Schmoes (Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis) vs. Team Top Ten (John Rocha and Matt Knost) that went down to the final question.  Top Ten got the win and earned themselves a team title shot vs. the Patriots.  Then, on Friday, the Wolves of Steel teammates, Mark Reilly and Clark Wolfe, had a singles match to gain a title match with “The Outlaw” John Rocha.  Mark Reilly defeated his teammate and then he had a great and intense promo with Rocha in the backstage area.  I know most of that stuff is put on like pro wrestling, but Reilly and Rocha were great here.  You could almost believe that they hated each other.  The Movie Trivia Schmoedown has become one of my favorite shows online during the week.  Congrats to Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis for their work on this entertaining show.

Next week… it is Wrestlemania 33 on the WWE Network, including Friday night’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Good viewing everyone.

Musicals

Image result for musicals

Musicals.  Many do not like these.  Many do. It seems that it is more difficult to make an effective musical than a normal movie.  So I decided to make the list of the best musicals made.

Now, I have to clarify some rules that I used to approach these choices.  One, I eliminated all of the Disney/Pixar animated movies such as Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Aladdin, etc.  Two, I have eliminated the films that have songs, but are performed on a stage or as over the action.  These examples can be This is Spinal Tap, Sing Street, School of Rock etc.

For me to consider a musical for this list, the music has to be involved in the story and have people singing from out of nowhere.

Runner’s Up:  Here are some that just could not reach the Top 10.  Chicago (which was in until the last second), Annie, La La Land, Beauty and the Beast (live action version), Pitch Perfect.

So… here is the Top 10 musicals

#10.  Grease.  It is the word.  John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John are great in Grease.  The music is unbelievably catchy.  It tells a fun story of the 1950s and a love story between two kids who expect that the other must change to make the other happy.  Message aside, Grease is an awesome musical.

#9.  Rocky Horror Picture Show.  It’s just a jump to the left.  Rocky Horror is a cult classic with the amazing Tim Curry.  I love the soundtrack of this film.  The movie itself may not be the greatest film ever created, but the fun is undeniable.  Meat Loaf, Susan Sarandon, Richard O’Brien, Barry Bostwick all provide vocals for songs that make this movie great.  And then the audience participation parts really made this a cult classic.  Go see Rocky Horror at a midnight show somewhere, some time and throw some toast.

#8.  Evita. Some people did not love this movie, starring Madonna as Eva Perón, but I thought it was fabulous.  I was never a huge fan of Madonna, but I played this soundtrack over and over.  I also found the movie itself extremely entertaining.  This movie had constant singing or music.  The actual dialogue was severely limited and that was not a bad thing.  The Waltz for Eva and Che is one of my favorite moments of this film.

#7.  The Muppets.  I was originally going to eliminate all Muppet movies form the list, but I decided that the return film for the Jim Henson creations really fit the category more than other Muppet films.  This film focused more on the human characters Gary and Mary, played by Jason Segel and Amy Adams, and these two definitely sprung into song throughout the film.  The nostalgia was dripping off every scene and made this movie one of the best Muppet films ever.

#6.  The Wizard of Oz.  I hadn’t thought about this film until I started doing the research for this list, but The Wizard of Oz certainly falls into the category with what I laid out.  Judy Garland’s iconic turn as Dorothy trying to make her way back to Kansas is one of the greatest movies in the history of cinema.

#5.  Little Shop of Horrors.  Feed me Seymour.  The funny musical with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin came from a Broadway play.  The story of a weird little plant that is actually an alien bent on world domination is fun, full of humor and great characters.  Audrey II is one of the best musical villains and really tears down the house (quite literally)!

#4.  Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.  This is easily the bloodiest film musical of all time.  Johnny Depp starred in the lead role of the barber who was back from exile and ready for revenge.  The bodies of his victims found their way into the meat pies sold by Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter).  This film even had the great Alan Rickman.

#3.  Mary Poppins.  Disney’s live action classic, Mary Poppins, brought us the greatest music from any Disney film.  Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke were iconic in these amazing roles, based on a book series by P.L. Travers.  The musical was so great that it inspired a film that told the story of getting the rights to shoot Mary Poppins from Travers.  That film was called Saving Mr. Banks, and it goes to show the impressive lineage of Mary Poppins.  There is soon to be a new sequel to Mary Poppins starring Emily Blunt.

#2.  Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.  The EYG Hall of Fame movie starring the incomparable Gene Wilder as the reclusive chocolate maker Willy Wonka was both a great musical and a terrifying trip.  The scene of Gene Wilder singing on the boat as it was going through its strange trip was frightening to countless children.  This film would not have been as successful though without the amazing Wilder, who filled Willy Wonka with such charm while also providing plenty of underlying sinister moments.   This one surely deserves a Golden Ticket.

#1.  Moulin Rouge.  The jukebox musical that took many present day songs and blended them in with the classic music of the period.  Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman had unbelievable chemistry as Christian and Satine and the tragic end is sure to bring tears to your eyes.  Moulin Rouge is a film about love.

Saban’s Power Rangers (2017)

Image result for power rangers movie poster

I used to watch the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers when it was on FOX Kids in the 1990s.  Honestly, I watched it as a time waster until The Tick came on, but I did watch it.  I knew it for the cheesy, repetitive and over-the-top show that it was.  I did not hate it.  I did not love it.  It just was.

I was interested in seeing the new movie version of the show, however.  It had a different vibe on display in the trailers that made me feel that some of the things I did not like about the TV show were going to change.

And, now that I have seen Power Rangers, I must say that I think this was a fun film, with enough of a new tone and enough of the old tone to make everyone happy.

Five teenagers, all with a multitude of personal problems, wind up finding these “coins” of different colors in an underground cavern and they realize that they now had super powers.  Investigating further, the kids discover an underground space ship where Zordon (Bryan Cranston), a giant head in a wall, and a robot Alpha Five (Bill Hader) reside and Zordon informs these teens that they are the new Power Rangers.

Oh, and the villainous Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) is coming and she is going to kill everyone on earth.

Geez, thanks Zordon.

I kind of expected that the new Power Rangers movie would not hold my attention, but it started out well.  It had an initial Breakfast Club meets Chronicle feel that really grabbed my interest.  The film took its time to introduce us to these new teenagers and to show us their lives, their troubles and their struggles.  I really dug that and I think it made this a considerably stronger film than I believed it would be.

I also enjoyed the performances of the actors cast as the Power Rangers.  Jason (Dacre Montgomery), Kimberly (Naomi Scott) and Billy (RJ Cyler) in particular were the standouts in the cast of the super hero team.  That takes nothing away from the other two Rangers (Becky G and Ludi Lin), but these first three really did most of the heavy lifting of the story.  Billy especially is the breakout character of the film.  It seemed as if the character was implied to have Asperger’s Syndrome ( a form of Autism) and I found that to be an intriguing choice for the Blue Ranger.

We did not get any costumed action until very late in the movie.  That was a risky move for the film, but I think it really paid off.  We got to see this group of kids form a connection with each other that was stronger than “we are a group of heroes and we have to save the world.”  This time put into the connection between the Rangers really added to the moment at the end when they finally do morph into their battle armor.

When the Power Rangers do fight, the film gives long time viewers a distinct flavor of the old show.  I am certain that this was intentional.  That first fight between the Rangers and the Putties could have come straight out of the first season.  There were actually several bits of nostalgia tossed into the film like this that really helped pepper the flavor of the Power Rangers into the new film.

I liked Rita Repulsa early in the film.  She had a horror movie feel to her, but in the third act, she felt way too over-the-top and cheesy.  It was as she was exactly like the Rita from the TV show, and, since the movie had changed much of the tone, Rita worked against the movie.  Not that she ruined the film for me, but it was definitely noticeable.

I was also not the hugest fan of the third act slugfest involving the Zords.  I am sure that the real fans of the original series will love the ending though and that is a good thing.  I liked it more when the Zords combined into the Mega-Zord.

While this was not a great movie, it was fun and that will help out any flaws that might be there.  The characters of the Power Rangers were much more developed than any time before and the connection between the Rangers was not ignored.  The beginning section of the film where we see Zordon and Rita in their last battle over earth was a cool way to start the film and the acting was surprisingly good, from the teenagers to Bryan Cranston.  The film effectively balanced the tone of the old series and the new film, making sure that there was something in the film for everybody.  I think that this is an effective way to kick off the new franchise, and… with the mid credits scene…we may have our hint for the next film’s storyline.  And it is one that will turn all the former fans of the Power Rangers GREEN with envy (see what I did there?)

Life (2017)

Image result for life movie poster

There is nothing specifically original about the film Life, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Ryan Reynolds.  Honestly, it is very much similar to a little film called Alien that came out a few years ago.  However, just because the films are similar, it does not mean that this film is not worth the time to see it.

In Life, several scientists have collected soil samples from Mars and they discovered a microscopic life form that proved the existence of life beyond the earth.  These scientists continued to research the life form, watching it grow.  Things turn on them when the life form attacks one of the scientists, escapes from its isolation and goes on attack.

Of course, if you have ever seen one of these movies before, you know what is going to happen.  The creature, which has been dubbed “Calvin,” goes about killing the members of the crew.

Strengths of Life:  Well, the film looks tremendous.  It is a gorgeous setting that really helps create the tension of the scenes.  And there is a ton of tension involved here.  This is certainly a horror/thriller and it ramps up the anxiety from the moment Calvin escapes from its Petri dish.  The film does an admirable job of creating the claustrophobic feel of beings in tight spaces and in imminent danger.  The tone of the film is extremely well done and should keep you on the edge of your seat.

However, there are some distinctly dull moments as well (most of the time prior to the escape of Calvin) that create a stark contrast with other parts of the film.  Once the organism frees itself, the pace definitely picked up.

Another issue is that none of these characters were developed very deeply.  We have a few character details provided, but mostly, these characters are disposable.  Even with the talented cast that this film can brag about, these actors can only do so much.

Jake Gyllenhaal is fine in his role.  His character of David Jordan is on the way to becoming the longest living person in space.  That’s about all we know of him.  Ryan Reynolds’ Rory is the smart alack.  Hiroyuki Sanada (from LOST, Revenge and The Wolverine) played Sho, whose wife gave birth to a child.  Rebecca Ferguson was the woman on the ship.  As you can tell, these characters are not deeply distinguishable.

Calvin looked pretty good, though it did really remind me of the facehuggers from Alien.  I would have preferred for it not to look so alike, especially before it grew into the larger creature that it did.  The appearance of Calvin only reinforced the notion that this was too similar to the Alien series of movies.

Despite this, I was engaged by the film and found myself nervous as Calvin was bouncing freely around the space station.  Not to spoil anything, but I saw the ending coming a mile away, but that does not take away from a pretty solid little thriller that successfully plays on the fear of the unknown.

CHiPs

Chip Happens?

Well, sticking with that joke… this movie is a piece of Chip.

Boy, I thought this one was going to be bad, and, man, was I right.

CHiPs is the latest nostalgic television show to become a feature length film by changing the tone into a comedy in the same vein as 21 Jump Street.  The original television show starred Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox, but I was never a fan of it.  Then, the trailers for this film were terrible.  However, there is always a chance….

Nope.  CHiPs was atrocious.

FBI Agent Castillo (Michael Pena) was asked to go undercover in the California Highway Patrol unit under the pseudonym Francis “Ponch” Poncherello.  He was paired up with rookie cop and former stunt biker Jon Baker (Dax Shepard) to investigate the suspected robbery of armored bank cars by police officers.  These two immediately hate each other as every thing about the other one rubs them the wrong way.  As they learn to get along with each other, a bond forms between them and they become friends.

Ugh.

I really like Michael Pena, but he was given such a load of crap here that I can’t imagine why he would agree to do this.  Ponch is such a horrible person, downright unlikable and mean, that I had no reason to cheer this guy.  And he and Jon had no chemistry at all.  They spent most of the film putting down each other that I didn’t care if they ever became friends.  Jon was such a naive individual, until he wasn’t.  If the script called for Jon to be pathetic, he was pathetic.  If it called for him to be an amazing observational person, then he was.

Nothing here was funny.  I am always amazed at the laughter that comes from the theater when a film uses so much of this kind of lowbrow and stupid (borderline mean-spirited, misogynistic, homophobic) humor.  It makes me want to turn to the others in the crowd and ask them why they find this garbage funny.  There may have been one or two giggle-worthy moments in the film, but they were very few and far between while the rest of the humor focused on the lowest level of jokes.  Crude humor can be funny if done smartly, but there is nothing smart about the humor in CHiPs.

The story was stupid.  There were massive plot holes throughout the entire run.  Ponch had, apparently, some kind of sex addiction and Jon was addicted to painkillers and, I guess, had a bad knee and a body that was failing him.  So of course the movie made him a cop.  The scene where Jon hurtled a shrub made me wonder why his bad knee (that caused him to be unable to get out of bed earlier) didn’t prevent that from happening.  I guess it was because the script needed him to jump that bush.

Jane Kaczmarek (formerly an Emmy winner for Malcolm in the Middle) and Kristen Bell (from Veronica Mars and Heroes) as well as Vincent D’Onofrio (The freakin’ Kingpin) had roles in here, and they were all wasted.  Kaczmarek in particular had a character that was a complete insult to her talent as an actress.  D’Onofrio had one or two scenes that made me think he was more than just a cardboard cutout of a character.

All of the characters were basically one note characters.  They had a character trait, and that is what they were all about.  They were not well developed people with certain troubles or flaws.  Those flaws completely defined who these people were.

I was so happy when this movie ended.  It was a trash heap and it absolutely lived down to the expectations that I had going in.  It is right up there with the worst films of the year.

The TV Week That Was

spoilers

Boy, there was a bunch of things that happened on television this past week.  Where to start?

Image result for netflix iron fistHow about Iron Fist.  Marvel’s latest series dropped on Netflix this past Friday to unmarked territory for a Marvel series… bad reviews.  The show had been panned, lambasted… dramatically by the critics leading me to wonder how bad the series could be.  The answer?  Not bad at all.  In fact, I binged the series this weekend and I enjoyed it tremendously.  I find it difficult to believe that this was a series that received 17% on Rotten Tomatoes.  Sure, it may not be up to the standards set by Daredevil, but to call this a failure is just not fair.

Image result for netflix iron fistWhat could cause such issues?  Well, there is speculation that the controversy about Marvel not casting an Asian actor to play the role of Danny Rand (despite the source material featuring a white Danny) was mentioned by several critics, leading me to believe that some of them may have gone into the viewing with a less than objective viewpoint.  Maybe they only watched the first two or three episodes because these episodes are not the best of the series.  It is fairly slow paced…. as they said on Collider TV Talk, deliberately paced, and maybe that would have led some critics to blast the series as they did.  Maybe some critics were looking for better martial arts, but I don’t know any different so it seemed fine to me.

In the end, all I know is that I really enjoyed Iron Fist and I am truly anxious for the next Marvel Netflix series, The Defenders, which has wrapped filming as of this week.

Image result for rachel maddow trump taxesThe next really big news happened on MSNBC where Rachel Meddow tweeted out earlier in the day on Tuesday that she had President Donald Trump’s tax returns.  This created a firestorm of activity for the news network ans excited Americans tuned in for the breaking news, only to discover that the tax returns in question was two pages from 2005 that showed that Trump had paid some 35 million in taxes.  Then, it was revealed that the tax returns had been anonymously left in a reporter’s mailbox, leading to the, fairly reasonable assumption, that the Trump Administration themselves had leaked this information to serve as a distraction or to show that he actually did pay taxes.  Not only that, but with Maddow stretching the reveal out into about half of her show’s run time, she was criticized for trying to fool the viewers into thinking she had more than what she did.  Bill Maher even went as far as to say that Maddow’s scoop had “turned out to be a big Nothing Burger. Worse than a Nothing Burger, it was a Help Trump Burger.”  Maddow defended her reporting by saying that “we broke the story correctly.”

Image result for designated survivor veep diesTurning to a president of another type, Designated Survivor continued its sharp return with an exciting episode that saw the death of newly minted and treacherous Vice-President Peter MacLeish by the hand of his own wife, moments before she took her own.  This was after President Kirkman and FBI agent Hannah Wells had finally swapped information and had set up a trap for the sneaky Veep.  We also discovered that FBI Deputy Director Jason Atwood, who had confessed earlier in the year because the conspiracy against Kirkman had kidnapped Atwood’s son Jason, was told that the FBI had found the body of Jason dead.  It was one of the most tragic aspects of the show, though a surprising one considering that the whereabouts of the boy was what kept Atwood quiet.

Image result for nbc trial and errorThis week saw the premiere of the first two episodes of Trial and Error, the new comedy series on NBC starring John Lithgow.  Told in a mockumentary format, Trial and Error follows the story of the eccentric Southern poetry professor who was accused of murdering his wife by throwing her through the glass door.  The show features a crew of extremely wacky and crazy characters with many of the strange and quirkiness that one might see on this type of show.  The show has several redneck and Southern justice cliches that it milks for all its worth.  There is also a young New York lawyer who comes down to handle the case, adding to the comedy.  Honestly, Trial and Error only worked because of Lithgow and his remarkable ability to be funny with this oddball character.  I plan on giving it yet another few episodes to see if the show can catch its feet.

Image result for eli pope killed the president electI do believe that I called this last week.  On ABC’s Scandal this week, it was revealed that Eli Pope was the actual assassin behind the gun that assassinated President-elect Frankie Vargas.  In last week’s column, I said, “ I must say that I approve of this season of Scandal, as it has kept me on my toes and guessing who was actually behind the death of Vargas.  However, I might be disappointed if it turns out to be Rowan.”  Who knew that I was prophetic.  Now, I will say that the episode was very dramatic and still did surprise me with the lengths that Papa Pope will go to for his power, but I have to say that I really believe it is past time for Papa Pope to finally pay for his crimes.

Image result for bates Motel latest episode alex romero picking buckshotI also predicted that Caleb would not be long for the show.  Then last week, he was hit by a car and dies.  This week, they had to get rid of the body.  Norman Bates continues to race toward his insanity as he is having more and more conversations with his dead mother.  He is also dressing up a woman he is interested in in his mother’s dresses.  There was so much creepy about that episode that you can’t even begin explaining it.  Alex Romero continued his trek back to get his revenge on Norman for murdering Norma by picking the buckshot out of his stomach from his encounter at a farm.  Romero appears to be on a direct target for Norman and is like a Terminator in doing so.

Legion.  What. the. Heck?  I have to say… I have no idea what is going on in this show, but I am enjoying the trip (no pun intended).

Image result for walking dead season 7 dead boy from kingdomOn the Walking Dead last week, it seemed as if we finally have the confident Carol back and ready to fight.  Sadly, it did not come until after the death of young Benjamin.  Benjamin, shot by the Saviors when it appeared that the Kingdom had shorted them a cantaloupe, died because of Richard’s attempted plot to get the Kingdom to join Rick and the others against the Saviors.  This plot led directly to Morgan strangling Richard to death in front of the Saviors and King Image result for walking dead season 7 dead boy from kingdomEzekiel.  We saw the return of berserker Morgan.  However, the events of this episode has convinced Ezekiel that the time for fighting is here.  Morgan then revealed the truth about what Negan had done to her friends to Carol.  Things are progressing rapidly toward the season finale of the walking Dead in just three weeks.   Oh… and we all love Jerry!

The Belko Experiment

Image result for be o experiment movie poster

The Belko Experiment was written by James Gunn and directed by Greg McLean.  It is a horror-thriller set int an office building. Many people have made the comparison of this being Office Space meets the Purge, and that is a fair assumption.

Belko is a corporation that worked to export American jobs with American workers into other countries…or at least, that is what they were told.  In reality, Belko was setting the stage for a social study on the nature of humans placed in a violent, no-win scenario.

There are 80 employees of Belko and they find themselves trapped in their office building after blast doors seal the building tightly.  Then, a voice over the intercom states that if they do not kill 20 of the people, they would kill double that number, and then they proceed to show their strength by blowing up the chip that was placed (as a way to protect the employees from kidnapping) in each employee’s head.

Of course, this was causing quite the panic among the employees and it did not help when the CEO of the corporation, Barry Norris (Tony Goldwyn) decides that the only way to go was to follow instructions.

The Belko Experiment is a mixed bag.  While it is a fascinating concept for a horror-thriller, the actual execution in many senses are lacking.  The idea of normal people having to choose what to do in an unwinnable situation is an interesting set-up, but it was not really followed through with in any specific manner.  The social study aspect of the story was touched on, but not developed enough to make this a psychological thriller.  The other major issue hurting this film was the lack of any sort of character development for most of the characters on screen.  These characters were basically disposable characters you might find in a slasher movie, with perfunctory introductions and, maybe, a few seconds to let the audience know who this person is.  It was not enough to really build the kind of connection to the characters so, with most of these characters, you don’t care much when they are killed.  Sure, you feel bad generally because it is sad to see people killed, but the emotional beat is severely lacking for most of these characters.

There are a couple of exceptions.  Michael (John Gallagher, Jr) is our main protagonist and is the character we spend the most time with.  He is also the one who wants to find a better way of escaping this trap than following instructions.  He is the voice of reason within the chaos of the story so he is easier to relate to than the rest.  The other character that I felt a connection to was Evan (James Earl), the security guard who was given quite a bit to do early in the film, and who showed his strong moral fiber in the face of the horrible situation.

I hated Tony Goldwyn’s character, who became so unhinged that he became downright stupid.  There was a situation at the end of the the story that I will not spoil, but had the character done what I would have done, things would have turned out differently.  Even worse was John C. McGinley’s character of Wendell, who we were introduced to as a creep and who never had any redeeming qualities at all.  He just became someone who I wanted to see die, and movie characters like that are not really characters as much as they are plot conveniences.  I also hated Michael’s girlfriend Leandra (Adria Arjona) who seemed to be desperately inconsistent as a character.

Having said all of this, I did find myself reasonably engaged with the film and I was anxious as the story continued.  It turned more into a gore fest with some brutal scenes of blood and death than any sort of social experiment.  That is fine, and if you approach the movie with that understanding, I believe you could really like The Belko Experiment.  It really felt like the film wanted to be more but it settled for the lowest possibility instead of reaching for something better.

The ending of the movie was pretty anticlimactic as it really just sets up the sequel rather than serving as a message or a theme.

The Belko Experiment was one of those films where I walked out of the theater entertained, but the more I thought about the movie, the more of its flaws started to surface.  If you are looking for an intelligent, psychological thriller that has a message to share with the world or a satire of the cutthroat world of business, well this film is not for you.  If you want a potential guilty pleasure horror-thriller where disposable characters are disposed of in gruesome manner, then The Belko Experiment might just be what you are looking for.

Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Image result for beauty and the beast movie poster

A Tale as old as time…told once again for a new generation.  Is it worth it?

Disney has been remaking their animated classics over the last few years.  Cinderella, Maleficent, Pete’s Dragon and Jungle Book were already in the books and now we get the live-action remake of the Oscar nominated animated movie, Beauty and the Beast.

In the new film, Emma Watson plays Belle, a beautiful young girl who is more interested in reading a book than marrying the local hero, Gaston (Luke Evans).  When he father (Kevin Kline)gets lost in a dark and mysterious castle, Belle heads out to help him.  She finds herself in held prisoner by the Beast (Dan Stevens) and a castle full of animated furniture.

The new live action Beauty and the Beast is basically the same movie as the animated version, with a few small differences.  That was an important thing, I believe, because if they had made a ton of changes to this classic story, the fans would be totally up in arms.  However, there were a few items added to the new film.  There was a story line involving the back story of Belle, particularly with the fate of her mother.  There was a bit more of a role for the Enchantress (Hattie Morahan) who had originally cursed the castle and its inhabitants.

And most controversially, the character of Lefou (Josh Gad) was portrayed as a sexually confused man, showing homosexual tendencies.  This was a major problem for some, but not an issue for me.  In fact, Josh Gad is one of the standouts of the entire film.  Those people boycotting the film because of his fact should really examine their own lives a little closer.  And those people leaning on this for a way to bash the film, well, that is an unfair circumstance.

I did enjoy this film.  I thought that they did a lot of really great things.  First, I believe that they really needed to hit a home run when it came to a couple of the song scenes.  The three major scenes I think included the big dance scene with Belle and the Beast, the Gaston bar song, and the “Be Out Guest” scene.  In my opinion, they nailed two of those three.  The Gaston song was one of my favorite moments of the film.  The dance scene with Emma Watson and Dan Stevens was just beautiful and very moving.  I thought the “Be Our Guest” song , which was extremely iconic from the animated version, was at best average.

Secondly, I thought that Emma Watson brought a sweetness and a real youthful beauty to Belle.  Her emotional moments at the end of the film were very powerful.  She was a charming lead for Beauty and the Beast.

Thirdly, I would say that Luke Evans completely embodied one of Disney’s greatest villains in Gaston.  He was a perfect casting of him, and really pulls off the arrogant hunter/lady killer.  Josh Gad, as I mentioned before. was wonderful as Lafou, and the minor inclusion of a sexual orientation for the character only provided more depth for the sidekick.  Evans and Gad were great with their singing as well, just belting out their tunes when the opportunity presented itself.  Kevin Kline was wonderful as Belle’s father Maurice.  They added a small little song for Kline near the beginning of the film that was just beautiful and perfectly delivered by the amazing Kline.   Emma Thompson sang the title song beautifully, but she felt like she was just doing an Angela Lansbury imitation for most of the film.

Finally, most of the backdrops for the action was tremendously beautiful and flawlessly executed by the professionals at Disney.  This was an epically beautiful movie to watch.

Now, there were also several things that I did not love about this new remake.  Unfortunately, though I loved Emma Watson’s performance as Belle, I believe that her singing left something to be desired.  I mean, it was not as if she was a bad singer, but she just did not have the range or the chops to carry off some of the big time songs that Belle has to sing.  Watson was okay singing-wise, but that is tough when you are so front and center.

And then there was the CGI.  I just had some issues with the CGI on some of the characters.  The look of the Beast bothered me several times.  I am not sure what exactly it was, but the Beast just did not meet up with my expectations.  I kind of wish they had gone with full on motion capture rather than the process that they wound up using.  I also did not like the look of the clock Cogsworth (played by Ian McKellen) or the golden candelabra Lumière (voiced by the awesome Ewan McGregor).

Finally, I really did not like the castle onslaught scene where the furniture fights off the angry mob.  This scene was so cartoon-like that it betrayed a lot of what they wanted to do.  While it worked big time int he original animated movie, this felt out of place here.  However, the final battle between the Beast and Gaston was very well done, though I would have rather Gaston still used his bow and arrow than the gun that he was using here.  That is a minor quibble, but the bow and arrow made Gaston more of a hunter than the gun here, bringing more to the character of the braggadocio hunter.

One of the biggest troubles this movie will face is the challenge of updating an animated movie that is considered one of the best of all time.  Beauty and the Beast (1991) was the first animated movie ever nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.  That is some mighty huge shoes to try to fill which is why this film does not try to stray too far from the original.  However, it is not exactly a scene for scene remake wither.  It does take some interesting side trips that were meant to redefine or inform on the development of these beloved characters.  Any time a character gets more layers, I believe that is a good thing.  Disney’s newest live action film does a very solid job of doing just that.

While it may not have all of the magic of the original, the new Beauty and the Beast does find enough of that Disney magic to make this a rewarding experience.
