Wrestlemania 36 Night Two

WrestleMania 36 Results - April 5, 2020 (NIGHT TWO) | EWrestling

Night Two of the event that was “so big it had to be two nights” is in the books.  Wrestlemania 36 Sunday had high expectations because Saturday night was so strong.  Would night two be able to stand up to what we saw before?

Honestly, there are so many strong points that I would say the answer to that question is “yes.”

The one thing that really stood out on Sunday was the bizarre Firefly Funhouse Match.

Before I hit on that, let’s hit the other matches.

Pre-show match had Liv Morgan defeating Natalya.

Kevin's WWE WrestleMania 36 Night Two Review | 411MANIACharlotte Flair defeated Rhea Ripley in a stiff opening match.  I noticed that all of these matches seem to be having the wrestlers hit each other harder than normal.  I assume that is to cover from the lack of crowd sounds.  Charlotte became the new NXT Women’s Champion, by the way.

Aleister Black defeated Bobby Lashley with the black mass out of nowhere.  Lashley and Lana had some dissension teased.

Otis wound up with the girl after Mandy Rose showed up, gave Dolph Ziggler a low blow and Otis pinned the 2-time former World Champ.  Otis and Mandy shared a kiss in a great Wrestlemania moment.

WWE WrestleMania 36 Night Two ResultsEdge defeated Randy Orton in a Last Man Standing Match which was dramatic as could be, but went probably ten to fifteen minutes too long.  The ending sequences was truly excellent though.

The Street Profits defended their RAW Tag Team titles against Austin Theory and Angel Garza.  After the match, Bianca Belair showed up to rescue her husband Montez Ford.  Curious to see if this is Bianca’s RAW call up.

WWE WrestleMania 36 (Night Two) results: Trouble between Bayley ...Bayley retained her Smackdown Women’s Championship in a fatal five way match.  An already eliminated Sasha Banks returned and helped Bayley finish off Lacey Evans.  More dissension was teased between Bayley and Sasha.

WWE WrestleMania 36 Night Two: 5 Takeaways | ComplexDrew McIntyre defeated Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship in a match that was, basically, a repeat from the Saturday night Universal Championship Match with Braun and Goldberg.  This was easily the match that suffered the most from the lack of a crowd.  This was quite a disappointment of a match and I would have liked to see a better struggle for Drew before he took the title.  Still, I am happy he is the new champion and I am curious to see what happens next for the Scottish Psychopath.

WWE WrestleMania 36 Night 2 Results: The Firefly Fun House And The ...Okay, let’s get into it.  Certainly, what is going to divide the wrestling fan the most was the presentation of the Bray Wyatt vs. John Cena Firefly Funhouse Match.  Again, much like the Boneyard Match from Saturday night, to call this a match would be inaccurate.  This was bonkers and confusing to watch, but you have to give it to the WWE and the talents involved for giving us this cinematic experience and making it totally different than the Boneyard Match.

John Cena and Bray Wyatt wind up in the Firefly Funhouse dimension, going back and looking at the history of both characters.  It gave me a distinct “Black and White Lodge” feeling from Twin Peaks.  Funhouse Bray narrated most of the “match” and we looked at Cena’s past mistakes, such as the arrival with the “ruthless aggression” promo with Kurt Angle to the Dr. of Thuganomics to the Wrestlemania 30 match with Bray.

WrestleMania 36 results: Firefly Fun House match defied belief ...We also got comparisons of John Cena to Hulk Hogan, and a look at what could have happened had Cena gone heel after Wrestlemania 30.

This was as meta as you have ever seen from the WWE.  There was a line that talked about how Cena was just a “body with muscles” bit no talent.  I cannot imagine how this got receives an approval from one Vincent Kennedy McMahon.

The concept of the entire piece was a deconstruction of the character of John Cena and how his selfishness and bullying tactics affected Bray Wyatt.  John Cena could have been considered the villain of this piece, even after the Fiend finally dispatched Cena with the mandible claw.

There were flashbacks that featured significant performers from the past including Eric Bischoff, Kurt Angle, CM Punk, among others.  All of the Funhouse puppets were here too, with Evil Vince delivering the funniest line of the performance with a “That’s good shit.”

WWE WrestleMania 36 (Night Two) results: Bray Wyatt channels the ...Both Cena and, particularly, Wyatt played their roles to perfection and both were remarkable with their acting skills.  Bray Wyatt could be the best actor in the WWE right now.  Cena’s willingness to dive back into his “Prototype” outfit or the old Yankees jersey speaks a great deal about the character of this man, even as they are devastating the WWE character.

The Firefly Fun House Match Took John Cena on a Trip at ...In the end, the Fiend did pin Cena, as Funhouse Bray counted his shoulders down.  Then, Cena disappeared from the ring that they were in.  Totally vanished.  I assume this is a way to write off John Cena for the foreseeable future, if not for good.  I picture him trapped in the dimension of the Firefly Funhouse much like Agent Cooper was trapped in the White Lodge at the end of the season two of Twin Peaks.

titusMy second viewing of the match really helped as, after the live viewing, I felt very much like Titus O’Neil and his perplexed comment which directly followed the presentation.  I have seen reactions to this match anywhere from “total crap” to “art.”  It took a direction that was remarkably creative and risky.  I wonder how much of this came from the mind of Bray Wyatt and where he goes from here.

You could say the same thing about the WWE.  Will they take some time off and stay at home or will they try to continue with original programming during the uncertain times facing the world?  Hard to say (though they did show a promo for Money in the Bank PPV on May 10th), but the WWE and, specifically the wrestlers, should be commended on their work on Wrestlemania 36.  They could have easily phones this in, but they did not and they provided two nights of entertainment for all of us quarantined viewers.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) - IMDb

This French movie was one of the top foreign films from last year.

In the 18th century, a young painter Marianne (Noémie Merlant) was brought to an island to paint the wedding portrait of another young withdrawn lady Héloïse (Adèle Haenel).  Héloïse has been angry about the death of her sister and she is unhappy about being promised as a bride.

Since Héloïse refused to sit for the portrait, and even drove the previous painted away.  Her mother brought Marianne in to be a confidant for Héloïse.  As they spent time together, the two ladies grew closer to one another.

The acting was solid and the story was good.  It was a beautifully shot movie.

In the end, this was a fine way to spend a Sunday afternoon, but I would not consider this one of the great movies around.  It was solid.

Wrestlemania 36 Night One

WWE WrestleMania 36 Night One Results - Boneyard Main Event, New ...

For the first time ever, Wrestlemania was split into two nights of action.  Saturday night The WWE announcers continued to hype the reason that they divided the show into two parts was that it was “too big for just one night.”  However, the real reason, of course, is that the COVID-19 virus has become a pandemic across the world and there are orders for people to stay at home and avoid large group of people.

WWE decided against postponing Wrestlemania 36 and decided to push ahead at their WWE Performance Center in Orlando.  They taped, edited and designed the show in the weeks prior to the event.

I was very excited about the event this year.  Not that I’m not excited every year for Wrestlemania, but this year had just a little bit more.  I don’t know if it is because of the current state of the world and the quarantine surrounding it, but I was ready for the show.  Not having to watch 8-9 hours of consecutive wrestling on one night was appreciated as well.

Of course, I was on Twitter when the show started and I was amazed at the level of negativity crossing the site.  I guess I shouldn’t have been as Twitter is a reputed hotbed for the trolls of the world, yet I enjoy spending time tweeting there.  However this was really a chore having to watch the vitriol coming across in 280 characters or less.

People immediately began ragging on the show for things that they could not prevent and I got real tired of the posts saying comments like “they should have postponed” or “this is awful.”  Every time someone posted a tweet about “Being done with the show” or “I tried, but I can’t watch this any more” I wanted to respond with a “BYE”, but I decided not to engage with them.  That was probably a wise choice.  Heck, Twitter would be a better place if more people stopped and thought BEFORE they tweeted.

cesaro hashtag on TwitterMoving on to the show itself, the pre-show kicked everything off as always.  They featured a match between Drew Gulak and Cesaro.  I was shocked by this because Cesaro never gets the win any more, but he pulled this one out.  I love Cesaro and I think he could be a huge main event player in WWE, but there always seemed to be something or someone holding him back.  He used a no-arm airplane spin to get the victory in a spot highlighting just how awesome Cesaro is.

The main show began with a video compilation of “America the Beautiful” from performances over the years at previous Wrestlemanias.  It featured such artists as Aretha Franklin, Little Richard, Boys 2 Men, Willie Nelson and Gladys Knight.  It was a really well done video and kicked off the event wonderfully.

The video at the beginning of the show was epic as well.  It featured some amazing animation and turning of WWE superstars into mythic heroes and pirates.  WWE does these kind of things so well.

The first match on the main card was the Kabuki Warriors vs. Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship.  It was a decent match with four women who worked hard during it.  Again, I got tired of the negative respond on Twitter and I was very close several times in just dumping it.  In what I thought was the first upset of the night, Bliss & Cross won the match and became new tag team champions.

This was followed by King Corbin vs. Elias.  This match was not one I was looking forward to as I am not a huge fan of either performer, but it was fine.  It was a hard-hitting contest and both men did what they could.  Elias won with a roll up and a handful of tights.

Next, somewhat surprisingly, was the RAW Women’s Championship match with champ Becky Lynch defending against Shayna Baszler.  Becky was in the main event last year at Wrestlemania 35, and now she is in match number three.  Even more shocking was that she won the match as most people believed that Baszler would come out on top.  Becky had a reversal into a pin after being dominated for most of the match so I believe that this is far from over between the two of them.

The Intercontinental Championship was next as champion Sami Zayn defended against Daniel Bryan.  Zayn pulled all kinds of whiny, cowardly heel moves during the match, making you want to see him just get his butt kicked by the “Yes” man.  However, Zayn hit Bryan with a Helluva kick after Bryan had been distracted by Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura at ringside.

After the first four matches, there had been a feel of rushing, which was weird considering they had split the event into two nights.  Everything was solid up unto this point, but nothing out of the world.

That would change.

5 Biggest Headlines From WWE WrestleMania 36 Night One | CultaholicNext we had a triple threat ladder match for the Smackdown Tag Team Championship.  This was a match that was affected by the COVID-19 situation.  It was supposed to be champs Miz & John Morrison defending against the New Day (Kofi Kingston & Big E) and Jimmy and Jey Uso.  However, Miz was sick and was not allowed to be involved in the match.  As far as I know, Miz has not been diagnosed with COVID-19, but you cannot take any chances so he was out.

Instead, the ladder match continued as a triple threat single match for the tag team titles, which was weird, but turned out amazing.  Morrison, Jimmy Uso and Kofi Kingston engaged in the ladder match and put their bodies on the line for the empty arena.  They did some breathtaking spots and told a fantastic story about these three men desperately seeking the titles for their teams.  There were some amazing spots, my personal favorite was John Morrison tight-rope walking across the top rope from one turnbuckle to the other.

In the end, John Morrison won the match with one of the most creative endings to a ladder match in many years.  All three men were on the top of several ladders struggling to gain control of the belts which hung above the ring.  All three men had their hands on the titles and Kofi and Jimmy delivered a head butt to John Morrison who fell backwards onto a set up ladder below.  However, Morrison had held onto the titles and both of them fell with him, leading to his victory.  It was a great ladder match and these three men put it all on the line for the fans.

KOfliesThis was followed by a one on one match with Set Rollins against Kevin Owens.  They had a heated rivalry on Monday Night RAW over the last several months and this match is meant as the blow-off match.  After some good in-ring action, Rollins gets himself disqualified by striking Owens with the ring bell.  Still, Owens gets on the microphone and challenges Rollins to keep going with the match and make it a no-DQ match.  Rollins accepts, but that would be a bad choice for the “Monday Night Messiah.”  After some brutal chair shots, Kevin Owens lays Seth out on the announcer’s table, climbs the Wrestlemania set and leaps off with an elbow in the spot of the night.  A Stunner later and Kevin Owens defeats Seth and wins the match.

WWE WrestleMania 36 (Night One) results: Braun Strowman is the new ...The universal Championship match was next and this one was controversial heading into the show.  Roman Reigns, who was originally supposed to challenge Bill Goldberg for the Universal Championship, had pulled himself out of the event because of concerns over COVID-19.  Reigns, famously, had two battles with leukemia, one very recently, and his immune system would be compromised.  For concerns for his health and that of his family, Reigns announced a couple of weeks ago that he was out of Wrestlemania.

Oddly enough, the WWE continued to promote the match until this past Friday on Smackdown, where they basically stated that Braun Strowman was now in the match.  They did not explain it, nor did they even speak the name of Roman Reigns.  It was strange and seemed to miss an opportunity, but I do not know the circumstances so I will not criticize.

Braun Strowman faced off with Goldberg for the title.  Goldberg hit four spears on Strowman, who then kicked out.  This was followed by four power slams by Strowman, who pinned Goldberg for the Universal Title.  All in all, it was a weird match and went about 3 minutes.

WWE WrestleMania 36 LIVE RESULTS: The Undertaker BEATS AJ Styles ...The show ended with the Boneyard Match, pitting A.J. Styles against the Undertaker.  No one knew what a Boneyard Match was going to be and I am not sure anyone was prepared for what we got.  It was about a half hour in length and it was glorious.  It was more like a movie than it was a match.  Undertaker and Styles fought each other through a graveyard with special effects and big moments and a running commentary by the two men.  There was background music, including a Metallica song as the Undertaker arrived on a motorcycle.  This was much more of the American Bad-Ass version of the Undertaker than that of the Deadman, but this character seemed to have pieces of both of them.

Matt Hardy reacts to Boneyard match between Undertaker and AJ ...Reminding one of the Ultimate Deletion from the mind of Matt Hardy, the Boneyard Match was certainly a cinematic creation featuring two of the greatest performers in the WWE.  Styles and Undertaker are masterful storytellers and they brought every bit of that to this production.

To call it a match would be inaccurate, I would say.  It was more of a fight.  This is something that you need to go see.  It really makes me anticipate the Firefly Fun House Match scheduled for Sunday night with Bray Wyatt and John Cena.

I really have to say how appreciative I was for the performers of this card because they went all out to perform even though there was nobody in the stands cheering them on.  And while the lack of a crowd hurt certain parts of the show, WWE did the absolute best they could have done in the situation.  The Boneyard Match was astounding, the ladder match was brutal, Kevin Owens was insane and the show exceeded expectations.  So all of the negative Nancys out there can just head over to Twitter to complain.  I had a heck of a good time.

Bring on Night Two!

Disneynature’s Elephant (2020)

Disney Documentary with Meghan Markle Narration Gets Shredded by ...

Last year, I was a huge critic of the last Disneynature film, Penguins.  It made my worst 25 films of 2018 because of the way they modeled the story.  There was way too much personification and the main characters went through an idiotic situation that had me rolling my eyes.

So now Disney + has released the next Disneynature film, this time called Elephant.

It is wonderful.

Every complaint I had about Penguins was done perfectly well in Elephants. There was some personification in the documentary, giving the elephants names and motivation, but it did not overpower what was happening on screen.  It managed the humor properly and everything seemed to fit.

The doc followed a herd of elephants on their journey across the Kalahari Desert, from the Okavango delta to the Zambezi river and back again.  The herd’s matriarch was named Gaia and we also saw a mother Shani and her son Jomo.  What they do with these characters really work for the film, as does the dangers they face on their trip such as lions and mud pits.  The scene where Gaia goes into the mud to save a young elephant from suffocating in the mud.  That was an exceptional scene that fit into the narration.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, is the narrator and does a wonderful job.  She is clear and provides the perfect amount of humor and balance in her work.

The shots in these nature documentaries are consistently amazing and beautiful.  The creators of these docs, even the Penguins one that I disliked, bring unbelievable imagery of mysterious lands with animals that you rarely get to see.

This film was a real return to the entertainment of this series and I was very happy.  Sadly, this would have looked great on the big screen, but, with the Disney + outlet, my guess is that we will not see these released in theaters again.

Big Time Adolescence

Big Time Adolescence (2019) - IMDb

I have been searching for new content on the streaming services recently since the theaters are currently closed with the COVID-19 pandemic.  I had seen this on Hulu once but I thought it was a series.  So when I heard the podcast Critically Acclaimed with William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold review this as a movie and give it a positive review, I went back to Hulu to check it out.

Mo (Griffin Gluck) is a young teen who has bonded with his sister’s former boyfriend Zeke (Pete Davidson), who is several years older than Mo.  They continue to hang out even after his sister and Zeke break up.

After years of friendship, now 16-year old Mo is convinced by Zeke to sell marijuana at his high school parties, which Mo is suddenly the star of the show.  However, the world starts condensing on him.

This coming of age story is actually quite solid.  Pete Davidson does a top level job as the loser who cares more than he lets on.  Zeke does have feelings for the kid and he tries to give him advice that he thinks will be helpful, despite the fact that his advice is poor most of the time.  Davidson has some real charisma and feels like he works in this type of film.

Young Griffin Gluck does a great job as well.  He has a natural feel to him and looks very comfortable on the screen.  He has chemistry with the other actors and portrays the awkwardness of the teen life extremely well.

Jon Cryer plays Reuben, Mo’s frustrated father.  Reuben is unsure how to deal with his son and his strange connection to Zeke.  Cryer is excellent in showing his exasperation with Mo and how he does not understand why Mo wants to spend so much time with Zeke.  Cryer is very believable and could have used more on screen time.

Big Time Adolescence is a sweet and enjoyable coming of age story that has good performances and a fun story.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)

Amazon.com: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Clint Eastwood, Movie ...

This morning, I finished the “Dollars Trilogy” by Sergio Leone, by watching what is considered one of the best, if not the best, spaghetti Westerns ever made.  An argument could be made that this is the best Western period, spaghetti or not.  While I may not go that far, there is no denying that this is an iconic classic in the world of cinema.

The Man with No Name (Clint Eastwood) returns for the third installment, carrying on a con with his partner Tuco (Eli Wallach), where “Blondie” (what Tuco called him) turns Tuco in for the bounty and then saves him just before he is hanged.

“Blondie” leaves Tuco because he was never going to be worth enough reward for this to be worthwhile, which ticked Tuco off and sent him on the path of revenge.

Meanwhile, Lee Van Cleef, playing a character named Sentenza (or Angel Eyes), and he is in search of a Confederate officer named Bill Carson, who had stolen $200,000 in gold and had buried it away.  Angel Eyes was in search of the gold.

The three of them interact along the way and you never know what each of them may do next.

Lee Van Cleef made his second appearance in this trilogy, but it feels as if he is playing a different character.  Though it is implied that the Man with No Name had met Angel Eyes before, and it makes it feel as if he was the same as the character he played in For a Few Dollars More, he had enough different character traits to make me think that he was meant to be a different person.  Perhaps they just used the character to do whatever they needed.

Early in the film we find out that The Man with No Name is the “good,” Angel Eyes is the “bad” and Tuco was the “ugly” of the triumvirate.  This must be one of the themes of the film because it is hard to classify Eastwood as “good” when he really is no different than either Angel Eyes or Tuco.  The three of these characters are shown as equals in their actions.

The finale of this movie was just tremendous.  It was filled with tension and uncertainty where the three of our characters facing off over the gold.  The filming, the close ups, the music did an amazing job setting the tone of the Western.

I did think the film was a bit too long and there were a few scenes that I think could have been removed to tighten this up.  The whole Civil War part of the film seemed to be tossed in for no reason.  Admittedly, the way the two sides of the Civil War are shown as neither being heroic could fall into that theme I mentioned earlier.

So I was engaged with this movie and it truly was the best of the three.  This trilogy sent the career of Clint Eastwood into the stratosphere.

For a Few Dollars More (1965)

Amazon.com: Noir Gallery for a Few Dollars More Movie Poster 5" x ...

The second film in Sergio Leone’s “Dollars trilogy” was called For a Few Dollars More and it was the next Western I watched today.

This saw the return of the Man with No Name (Clint Eastwood), although he was called Manco early in the film (as he was called Joe in A Fistful of Dollars).  The Man with No Name met up with, as one of the posters called him, the Man in Black.  This was Lee Van Cleef, who played Colonel Douglas Mortimer, another “bounty killer” who joins up with the Man with No Name on a mission that was more personal than the Colonel let on.

As with A Fistful of Dollars, Eastwood was the major star of this film, but he and Van Cleef worked together brilliantly.  Their pairing was tremendous in many different ways.  Not only were they a great pair, you were never quite sure what was going to happen.  You always felt as if either one could turn on the other in a split second.  Even when it appeared that they were working together, the thought of betrayal hung in the air.

There were several things that were similar to the original film, but the sequel takes them a bit further.  The action was fine, but the gunfights were pretty repetitive.  I did like the reveal at the end of the reason for the Colonel’s pursuit of the villain El Indio (Gian Maria Volontè).

The score was a true standout in this Western.  Ennio Morricone created a score that presented the perfect soundtrack for what was happening on screen.  Many times I do not hear the score as the film is going on, but this one seemed to work in such a tandem that it was easy to hear.

I do believe that the film was a tad long and could have done with some tightening up in the middle, but I think I liked this more than the last film in this trilogy.

A Fistful of Dollars (1964)

Amazon.com: A Fistful Of Dollars Clint Eastwood 1964 Movie Poster ...

I have been wanting to improve my knowledge of Westerns and so I decided that I would watch the “Dollars Trilogy” to begin the stretch.  These Italian “spaghetti Westerns”  from director Sergio Leone starred Clint Eastwood and really catapulted him into stardom of the genre.

I chose to go in the order that the films were released, which meant I started with A Fistful of Dollars.

The Man with No Name (Clint Eastwood) arrived in a small border town where two gangs are at conflict.  The Man with No Name began working on setting the two gangs against one another in hope of gaining wealth himself.

Eastwood is the star of this movie and he stands out among all of the other actors in the film.  His presence really brings The Man with No Name to life and provides him with his gravitas.  The screen simply fills when Eastwood is on and he is powerful and dominant in this Western.  It is clear why they went ahead with two more movies featuring this character.

The film did not hold back with the violence of the West, especially in the third act where the body count truly picked up.  However, the film did not have blood or any kind of really gruesome moments in it, so the brutality was dampened somewhat.

A Fistful of Dollars had a plot that was heavily borrowed from Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo (1961) and, in fact, faced a lawsuit over that.  This film was another of the “dubbing” issues I have been having lately as most of the voices, excluding Eastwood, did not completely match the lips of the speakers.  This was an initial distraction, but I tried my best to ignore that.

The first of this trilogy got off to a fantastic start and really set the tone for the Westerns of the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Bloodshot

Bloodshot (2020) - IMDb

I never got around to this while the theaters were open and it was there.  I had intended to see it in the theaters, but I wasn’t feeling great and the timing just never worked out so I skipped Vin Diesel’s latest comic book based project, Bloodshot.

However, it came to the video on demand early after the theaters were closed nationwide.  I have to say that I still ignored it for a time because, by this point, I had heard the bad reviews on it and I wasn’t sure that I wanted to drop the money to see it.  Boredom took over tonight and I went ahead and purchased it.

Boy this was terrible.

Vin Diesel played Ray Garrison, an elite soldier killed in battle, but who was brought back using technology that gave him special abilities and powers.  After returning from beyond the grave, Ray turned his attention to the man who murdered his wife in front of him.

Or so he thought.

This is not a spoiler, since trailers gave it away, but it turns out that Ray’s mind is being messed with and his memories manipulated in order to make him an assassin.

So the story is convoluted and I couldn’t have given a bigger crap about Ray Garrison or anyone in his orbit.  The film does not make any real attempt to give us any reason to support or cheer for Ray and the mission he is on.  In fact, it is clear that he is not on a heroic mission.  Vin Diesel provided us with zero emotions outside of anger and vengeance.

There are zero side characters that are worth anything either.  Eventually we come across Lamorne Morris, whose comedic sidekick type character is fine, but we have little to no backstory or reason to care about him either… except that he was funny.

The action was fine, but nothing that you haven’t seen before.  The CGI was below average, especially when compared to other comic book movies and the exceptional work that they are providing the world.

This was quite boring.  There was nothing that made this stand out.  I probably should have left it alone.

Blow the Man Down

Blow the Man Down (2019) - IMDb

All the theaters are closed, so I need to depend on streaming for movies.  It has been kind of slow for movies.  However, today I found a movie released on Amazon Prime today, Blow the Man Down, and I was excited.

Priscilla (Sophie Lowe) and her sister Mary Beth (Morgan Saylor) wind up trying to cover up a crime.  By doing that, the small town of Easter Cove revealed some of the darker secrets of the town.

The story picks up immediately after Priscilla and Mary Beth’s mother’s funeral.  Their mother had been involved in a group of elderly women who are part of the underbelly of the town.

Margo Martindale played Enid, the local madam.  The other ladies included June Squibb, Annette O’Toole and Marceline Hugot.  These women are a fun part of the film, but I could have used more with all of them.

The film has a definite Fargo feel to it which was cool.  The movie was a funny, dark comedy with lots of dramatic undertones.  The characters are intriguing and creative.

My problem with the film was everything felt a little rushed, especially the ending.  I liked how they were weaving everything together, but it felt as if it resolved too quickly.  The film is only an hour and a half in length and I think they had enough here for more.

I love June Squibb.  She is the most engaging actress and I love when she shows up in any movie.  Margo Martindale was totally enthralling as Enid.

Both of the young girls leading the film are strong too.  It is just a well acted film with a fun story.

There are fun transitions with sailors singing shanties as well.  Very quirky and creative.  I enjoyed this a great deal.

Netflix Dubbing

Netflix Launches Top 10 Daily Rankings of Most Popular Titles ...

During this time of social distancing, I have been interested in seeing as many movies as I can.  Sure the theaters are closed and all of the big time movies are being pushed back to the fall or 2021, but I was sure that there would be plenty of great movies on streaming to fill my time.  And that is basically true.

However, I have found an issue.  On Netflix, I have tried to watch two separate films that I could not finish because I could not stand it any more.  These movies, The Platform and The Decline, were both of interest to me, but I could not finish them, and it was for one reason.

Dubbing.

Both of these movies are foreign language films that have versions of them on Netflix with English language speaking dubbed over the actual language.  I hated that.

Why do I hate this?  Here are the reasons.

  1.  It is terribly distracting.  I find myself watching the actors’ mouths instead of paying too close of attention to what they are saying.
  2. The voice acting is not the same as the original voice.  It does not match the actor and it loses emotion.  I used to not watch movies with subtitles because I did not want to read a movie, but I can’t tell you how much I prefer that to what I am seeing on these films on Netflix.
  3. I have found it way too easy to lose interest in the films with these dubbing.

Why do the films decide to do this?  I assume that the people in charge believe that viewers would not watch a movie with subtitles.  I wish there was a way to choose one way or the other.  If I want to watch without dubbing, it would be cool to be able to do it.

Either way, I have not been able to stick it out with these films.  It has been a shock to me when I watch the films with the subtitles because after a while, the subtitles seem to disappear and I do not even realize that I am reading any longer.

So I find the films like Parasite, Train to Busan, Old Boy, films that I have recently watched, are much more entertaining for me than those that have been dubbed.  I would not have thought that even last year.
