A Time to Kill (1996)

A Time to Kill (1996) Original One-Sheet Movie Poster - Original ...

I gave it my best chance, but I had to eliminate the Punish-Myself-Binge at four movies.  Sorry, but that was all I could stand.

I have been wanting to re-watch this film for awhile now and I figured this would be a good time to go ahead and do it.

A Time to Kill is a film directed by Joel Schumacher and starred Matthew McConaughey, Samuel L. Jackson and Sandra Bullock.

After the brutal rape of his 10-year old daughter by two white boys, Carl Lee Hailey (Samuel L. Jackson) took justice into his own hands, shooting and killing them on the steps of the Mississippi courthouse.  Cocky young lawyer Jake Brigance (Matthew McConaughey) took the case which ignited a racial firestorm.

Race is a huge theme of the film, of course, with the question of whether Carl Lee Hailey could receive a fair trial in Mississippi being right out front.  The Ku Klux Klan became a huge part of the conflict as well, bringing the level of hatred and violence to a deadly height.

Speaking of that, I wonder if Keifer Sutherland was really glad to get cast as Jack Bauer in the 24 series, because he was constantly being cast as steel faced villains in so many films of the time.  Here he was Freddie Cobb, the brother of one of the men Carl Lee shot and the emphasis behind the return of the KKK to the town.  Kiefer had a menacing glare that he put on display in a ton of films, from Stand By Me to A Few Good Men to The Lost Boys.  I’m just saying that it was probably a relief to be seen as a hero once.

While some of this film drags, the scenes in the courtroom, in particular Jake’s summation, is powerful and emotionally resonant.  When the film is at its best, the film is soaring.

Samuel L. Jackson is great as Carl Lee and his relationship with Jake is vital to the film and the resolution of the case.

Sandra Bullock, Donald Sutherland, Charles Dutton, Oliver Platt, Ashley Judd, Kevin Spacey, and Chris Cooper lead a cast that is very strong with all of their performances.

A Time to Kill hits hard and has a great message that is still relevant today.

Cop Out (2010)

Cop Out | Die Hard scenario Wiki | Fandom

The fourth movie in the Punish-Myself-Binge was destined to be perceived by me differently simply because it followed my viewing of the horrid The Love Guru.  It couldn’t be worse, could it?

Cop Out was the notorious buddy cop movie directed by Kevin Smith and starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan.  Cop Out received an 18% on Rotten Tomatoes and a pretty low 39% on the audience score.  Kevin Smith tells a story about how difficult it was for him to work with Bruce Willis.  Still, could it be worse than The Love Guru?

Well, by comparison to The Love Guru, Cop Out looks like The Godfather.  It’s not, of course.  It’s a bad movie, but after watching the travesty that was the Mike Myers’ mess, anything would have looked better.  In fact, Cop Out was probably the best of the four movies that I have looked at so far today.

That is not saying that I would consider this that elusive “guilty pleasure” that I started this binge looking for because it was not.  Still, there were some parts that were fine.

Cop Out was predictable and featured just about every last buddy cop trope imaginable.  Tracy Morgan was just too loud all the time (although there was a cute scene in an interrogation room where Morgan was quoting movies).

The story was simple and yet way too messy.  The main villain, named Poh Boy, was desperately distracting because I recognized him but could not place the face.  It bothered me for the first half of the movie until I broke down and pulled out IMDB for a search.  As soon as I saw a more recent picture of the actor playing Poh Boy, which was Guillermo Diaz, I recognized him as Huck from Scandal.  That was a relief.

This could have easily have been a Bad Boys movie without breaking a sweat.  Kevin Hart could take the role played by Tracy Morgan and make it his own.  There was absolutely nothing special or different about this movie, which is usually not what you see in a Kevin Smith movie.  Of course, this was a big studio film that helped convince Smith to basically do his own films from then on.

Cop Out fell into a good space in my viewing schedule because I did like it more than Twilight, The Love Guru and The Last Airbender, but it will never be confused with a good movie.

The Love Guru (2008)

The Love Guru Movie Poster - Movie Fanatic

Good God.

The third movie in my Punish-Myself-Binge may just be the worst of the three, which is saying something considering I watched Twilight and The Last Airbender.

The Love Guru was up next and it is absolutely one of the most unfunny, obnoxious, downright offensive movie I have ever seen.  It was at 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is actually higher than I thought it would be.  Truthfully, even the audience score was low, down at 33%.

And I really like Mike Myers.  I have always enjoyed him.  I loved him as Tommy Maitland, the host of The new Gong Show as well as other of his films.  This thing though… it is atrocious.

There are quality actors in this train wreck too.  It is one of those movies that make you wonder why they would take a chance with their careers being involved in this piece of garbage.   For God’s sake, Stephen Colbert and John Oliver, who are absolutely magnificent normally and who I love, are in this film and they can’t even pull this from the crapper.

This is up there with the absolute worst films I have ever seen.  It is Movie 43, Batman & Robin, Holmes & Watson bad.

I am really struggling to get through this binge.  This thing is just a total waste of time and, despite being quarantined, I can think of 100 things to do better with my time than watching The Love Guru.

Maybe the whole Punish-Myself-Binge was a bad idea.  However, perhaps the next one will be better.  IT HAS TO BE!

Twilight (2008)

www.gstatic.com/tv/thumb/v22vodart/182141/p1821...

So I was looking for a theme for this weekend’s binge-a-thon and then I watched The Last Airbender.  After watching that atrocious film, I came up with an idea.  It is officially the Punish-Myself-Binge.  The rules… I had to choose films that are considered terrible by many (if not most) and that I had never seen before.  That way, I can look at them with fresh eyes and make my own judgment.  I would do my best not to allow the film’s reputation creep into my review.  Who knows… maybe I can find a guilty pleasure or two.

Unfortunately, the second (remember Last Airbender was the first) film in the Punish-Myself-Binge will not be the guilty pleasure.

The 2nd film is Twilight, which sits at a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes and I have never watched the entire film. Yes I have seen bits of it, but it still qualifies.  I did not find this to be any good because, mainly, I am not a teenage girl.

Twilight is melodramatic claptrap that should be ashamed of inspiring the Fifty Shades of Gray series.  This is a film that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have spent years trying to overcome.  They are two really exceptional actors now but who were anything but at this point.

Let’s ignore the fact that vampires should not sparkle in the sunlight (they should burst into flames).  Let’s ignore the fact that Edward stated that he had been 17 years old for years (which makes one wonder how he dealt with school).  Let’s just look at the relationship between Bella and Edward.

Why should I invest with these two dopey kids?  I am not sure exactly why Bella started to like Edward, outside of the “he’s good looking” vibe.  He was anything but nice to her.  In fact, he acted as if she stunk.  Hey, that sounds like a winner.  Does he save her?  Yes, but he was also rude and obnoxious about it.  In my mind, she fell for Edward really quickly.  Certainly not quickly enough to accept that he was a vampire.

She figured out the secret of his vampirism, but why would that not send her screaming into the night?

There are as many scenes in Twilight that make me want to laugh as any other.  It was quite funny, albeit unintentionally.  The tree jumping scene had my mouth hanging open.

Oh, and the baseball scene with the rival vampire group.  LOL

Anna Kendrick was in this.  I did not know that.

Bella was one of the biggest damsels in distress I have ever seen in any movies.  She was constantly in trouble and requiring saving.  There is zero to the character outside of her loveliness.

And should I talk about that ending?  Holy cow it was just horrible.  The scene with Edward saving Bella with his family burning James (Cam Gigandet) was surreal and laugh out loud ridiculous.

Boy this was bad.  And not so bad it was good either.

stale

Hope I can maintain this Punish-Myself-Binge…

The Last Airbender (2010)

Amazon.com: ArtFuzz The Last Airbender 27 x 40 Movie Poster ...

With the continual staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, it gives me an opportunity to finally watch what some consider to be one of the worst movies ever made.  I have never taken the time to watch M. Night Shyamalan’s infamous The Last Airbender.  Could it be as atrocious as so many people say?

Simply put… yes, it can be.

This is utterly horrific.

I was not a fan of the EYG Hall of Fame series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, but I can imagine that dedicated fans of that animated series could only look at this adaptation as an insult and a slap to the face.

I mean, there is nothing here that is good at all.  The acting is wooden and dull.  The dialogue of the film is some of the worst you are ever going to hear on a wide release of a big budget tentpole film.  The CGI and special effects are laughable.  I don’t know how many times I looked at the screen and thought to myself, “Hey, green screen!”

Dev Patel is in this mess.  He would eventually become a respected actor, but it had to have been a challenge overcoming this movie.  Both Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson had to work really hard to get past their roles in Twilight.  Fortunately for Dev there was only one The Last Airbender to get by.

Boring.  Ridiculous story and dialogue.  Acting?  Ugh.  CGI that was just not good.

It is amazing but everybody was right about this.  It was one of the worst things I have seen and it was utter garbage.  One of the rare films to receive this classification….

Trolls World Tour

Trolls World Tour (aka Trolls 2) Movie Poster (#35 of 50) - IMP Awards

A sequel that we did not need turned out to be better than it had any reason to be.

I was not a fan of the first Trolls movie.  It felt way too saccharine sweet and irritating.  So I was anything but looking forward to the follow up, Trolls World Tour.  Yet, this was entertaining.

I don’t think it is just because I have been stuck inside for almost a month.

The arrival of Barb (Rachel Bloom), the Queen of Rock, who was in search of the mythical strings of music in order to make Rock and Roll the dominant force and end the rest of the music of the Troll world.  Pop Queen Poppy (Anna Kendrick) is determined that she can make Barb understand that all the music can exist together.  Branch (Justin Timberlake) went with her to help where he could.

A rush of color and music filled the screen throughout the movie and there were some really clever writing involved in the plot.  The film kind of reminded me of the LEGO Movie as there were lots of inside jokes and crafty word play.  It was way more intelligent than I remember it being in the first film.

The music was fine, but there was nothing here that would be able to match the catchy thrill and beat of Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop the Feeling.  There was some toe tapping going on, but I do not think there is anything that is worth remembering long term musically.

There were lots of cool voice cameos happening here including Mary J. Blige, Ozzy Osbourne, Sam Rockwell, George Clinton, Kelly Clarkson, and Jamie Dornan.

So I think it was way more entertaining than I ever believed it would be.  I had a smile on my face through the movie and found myself engaged in the story.  It was a quick run time and did not waste time.  It may have been even too quick at times.

This was a good time.  Who knew?

The Main Event (2020)

The Main Event (2020) - IMDb

Have you ever wanted to be a WWE superstar?  Well, all it would take is for you to find a magic mask and enter an NXT tournament.

The Main Event is the new Netflix/WWE Studios film that brings you into the fantasy of becoming a wrestler without any of the hard work.

Skinny and bullied 11-year old Leo (Seth Carr) is chased by the school bullies into an open house.  Hiding in a room, Leo, already a huge WWE fan, discovered a smelly old wrestling mask in a secret hiding place.  Leo discovered that when he put the mask on, he gained incredible strength, increased agility and a boost of confidence.  So much so that he, as Kid Chaos, entered a 16 person professional wrestling tournament with the winner gaining a WWE contract.

Meanwhile, Leo has a distant relationship with his father (Adam Pally), whose wife ran off with another man.  Leo’s over-the-top grandma (Tichina Arnold) connects with Leo over WWE and tries to get his father to talk to his son.

The movie is similar to the Jim Carrey movie The Mask, if this was set in the world of WWE, if the wrestling matches were real.

The film acted as if the matches in this “tournament” were real and happening.  Several WWE Superstars included in this movie were The Miz, Kofi Kingston, Sheamus, Otis and Keith Lee.  Keith Lee played a wrestler in the NXT tournament named Smooth Operator.  The main villain in the tournament was named Samson, performed by the NXT/Evolve wrestler named Babatunde.  Otis played the wrestler Stinkface, who has one of the dumbest scenes of the entire film.

The Main Event has some fun moments to it.  I liked the young Seth Carr.  I feel as if he did a solid job in this film.  The story had some sweetness in it too.  I have seen worse movies than The Main Event.

Having said that, there are a lot of silliness to the film.  It is very predictable and the whole “real-life” matches made little sense.  Everybody knows that WWE is scripted so to act as if it were real was a challenge for me.

This was not terrible, but it is, most likely, going to be more enjoyable for younger viewers.  It is silly and predictable and makes little sense.  Gigantic WWE fans, especially the younger ones, might like this more than others.  If you are not a WWE fan, this one is probably not for you.

ReMastered: Devil at the Crossroads (2019)

Review: REMASTERED: DEVIL AT THE CROSSROADS (***) on NETFLIX ...

I watched this documentary a few weeks ago late one night and forgot to do w rite up on it.  So today I was scrolling through Netflix to look for films for the weekend when I spotted this one.  I figured that I may as well write up this doc while I am at it.

The doc features the life of Robert Johnson, one of the legendary blues guitarist ever.  The rumors that came later in his life and over the times of how Johnson sold his soul to the devil to become a master of guitar.

The documentary plays with the myths surrounding the guitarist.  While they do not necessarily buy into the myth, they include the rumors and speculation in with the life story.  It is truly a creepy addition to the tale and works very well.  You can see why the legend continued past his death.

The set up and design of the presentation of the doc is wonderful and creates the perfect tone for this story.  The animated backgrounds are beautiful and stands out on the screen.

The documentary is short and plays quickly.  If you are a fan of blues, then this is a must watch for you.

The Iron Giant (1999)

Original The Iron Giant movie poster - Brad Bird - Jennifer Aniston

The classic tale of a boy and his 100-foot robot.

The Iron Giant is a beautifully artistic version of a story that we have seen dozens of times.  Why have we seen the story that many times?  Because it works.

A giant robot (Vin Diesel) winds up crashed on earth without its memory and with a distinct appetite for metal.  As it is consuming an electricity station, young Hogarth Hughes (Eli Marienthal) finds him and makes friends with the giant.  Meanwhile, a government agent named Kent Mansley (Christopher McDonald) arrives in town with a desire to capture the giant once and for all.

The Iron Giant is an emotional and powerful story of acceptance and choice that is great for the entire family. It deals with some massive themes too, including death and the ability to choose what you are going to be.   The film does it in a serious and yet remarkably entertaining manner.

Vin Diesel has done some of his best work as a voice over performer and his run here as the Iron Giant is no exception.  He is able to infuse the giant with so much humanity and emotion with so few words that this was clearly a perfect audition for Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy.

The animation of the movie was wonderful.  It truly does hold up, despite being over 20 years since its release.

There are some other excellent voice actors involved in The Iron Giant.  Jennifer Aniston voices Howarth’s mother Annie.  Harry Connick Jr. provided the voice for junkyard manager and scrap metal artist Dean.  And the general called in by Mansley was voiced by Frasier Crane’s father, John Mahoney.

The third act of this movie is just tremendous and really creates a tense and emotional climax showing what a hero truly is and how that hero should act.

The Iron Giant is a wonderful movie for everybody.  You’ll have tears in your eyes from the power of the film.

Pooka Lives!

Pooka Lives" Proves A Sequel Can Be Better Than The Original [REVIEW]

Holy crap!  I love Pooka!

At least, I loved Pooka Lives!

This is yet another film (although it looks as if it is a TV episode of a series called Into the Dark) talked about by Critically Acclaimed (William Bibbiani & Witney Seibold).  Pooka Lives was on Hulu and, apparently, it was a sequel to another film/episode called Pooka.  I have not seen the original, but, fortunately, you do not have to have seen Pooka to enjoy the follow up.  In fact, apparently, the film takes the franchise into a much different direction.

A group of adults who were childhood friends create their own Creepypasta as a joke, but the internet meme goes viral and creates a monster that starts to kill those who are naughty.

Derek (Malcolm Barrett) was a writer whose book called out online YouTuber Jax (Motoki Maxted).  Jax sends his millions of followers after Derek, ruining his life.  Derek heads to his hometown to hide out from the snarks.  He goes to his high school friends’, Matt (Jonah Ray) and Molly (Felicia Day), house to stay for awhile.

At Derek’s welcome back party, Matt, Molly, Derek, along with Derek’s old flame Susan (Lyndie Greenwood) and police officer Bennie (Gavin Stenhouse) come up with the Creepypasta and send it out on the internet.  Nothing hurt, right?

Wrong.  The story they loaded goes viral and, through the power of belief, leads to the accidental creation of this monster, based on a toy, a toy of which is preparing to have a relaunch soon.

This is a comedy/horror film that was just a hoot.  I loved the humor here.  I loved the characters.  I love the story.

Malcolm Barrett is great here, playing this silliness nearly straight, adding to the tone.  Felicia Day is fantastic as always as Molly, the crystal-using, mystical believing housewife and the relationship with Matt is both filled with conflict over their differing beliefs but also their true connection.  This is a real couple and I really enjoyed their arguing.

This movie also has something interesting to say about internet culture and the way the trolls online can act horribly and be downright wicked.  The movie shows how the online trolls can affect the lives of real people in the real world.  This message may not be subtle but it is also not beating you over the head with it.  It is well done here.

Pooka Lives comes from the Blumhouse Television and is directed by Alejandro Brugués, a different director than who did the original film Pooka.

I really enjoyed this movie, way more than I ever thought that I would.  There was a light, carefree tone to the film and has its share of campy moments.  The Pooka creatures are funny, but look to be mostly practical with their effects.  There are also some really scary imagery here, especially when Pooka’s big, overblown red eyes start to glow.

This is a lot of fun and I had a heck of a good time with Pooka Lives. Might be the best of the films that I have seen since the quarantine hit.

The Other Lamb

First Poster for Horror-Thriller 'The Other Lamb' - A young woman ...

In my continuing search for new content to pass the day along in the quarantine, I was listening to Critically Acclaimed, a podcast featuring critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold.  I was curious on their opinion on Netflix’s Coffee & Kareem (which basically matched mine), but I actually found something else.

They reviewed a movie from the producers of Nightcrawler and Whiplash, two movies which I loved, and the noted Polish director Malgorzata Szumowska called The Other Lamb.

It was called a horror movie, but I am not sure horror really fits as a genre.  It’s horror in the same way that Midsommar is horror.  There are horrible moments and situations and it is more horror in the creation of a mood than anything that outright scares you.  You feel very uncomfortable and somewhat dirty.

The film is the story of a cult lead by the mysterious Shepherd (Michiel Huisman).  There are a group of women who are considered either wives of Shepherd or daughters of Shepherd and they all live in the woods, sheltered from the view of the world at large.

However, one of the daughters, Selah (Raffey Cassidy) is headstrong and starts having thoughts and visions that make her question the validity of the situation and her faith in Shepherd.  With the veil pulled back, Selah began to see the fate of the wives as they grew older.

The atmosphere of this movies is what will either sell it or wreck it.  There is a definite yuck feeling going on here as you can tell exactly what Shepherd was doing with these women.  It makes one wonder what it was that led these people to find this man and how he was able to place himself on a pedestal above them.  He did not seem to be charismatic as some cult leaders are.  Plus, he was clearly a murderer.  The very absences of any male children tell you that, if a wife gave birth to a boy, things would happen.

I could have used more of a look inside the cult and something to base this all on for me to accept the total premise.  However, it was clear that this Shepherd was horrid and that the film was leading toward a showdown with him and Selah.   With this, the film does a strong job.

Overall, the movie did a good job unnerving me, but it could have done more.

Uncorked

Uncorked (2020) - IMDb

Uncorked is a Netflix film featuring Courtney B. Vance, Mamoudou Athie and Niecy Nash in a family drama of a son and the expectations of his father and how those expectations clash with what the son wants for his life.

Elijah (Mamoudou Athie) worked at his father Louis’ (Courtney B. Vance) Memphis BBQ restaurant, which had been passed down from father to son for a generation.  Elijah, however, was not looking at having the restaurant passed to him.  Instead, he wanted to become a master sommelier, which is an expert on wine.  Elijah’s choice to go to school began causing issues with his work at the restaurant and this led to conflict with his father.

The relationship between Louis and Elijah reminded me very much of my own relationship with my late father so there were moments that really spoke to me in Uncorked.  The mother, played by Niecy Nash, wonderfully by the way, was a fun and remarkably engaging character.

With good performances, the film is strong.  I will say that it did drag a little bit in the middle.  I do not drink wine so I did not know or relate much to it.

I also must say that the film had a couple of well done twists that take the story in a path that you do not expect.  Though there are some predictable bits in it, there are also some moments that you do not expect.  I did like the ending to this film as I did not expect it and I wanted to have it end differently.  Thinking back, I liked the end very much, but as I was watching it, I wanted the situation to be different.

This is one of the better recent releases from Netflix.

Coffee & Kareem

Coffee & Kareem (2020) - IMDb

There is a new comedy that popped up on Netflix recently.  It is called Coffee & Kareem.  It is an odd couple movie featuring Ed Helms as a police officer who gets involved with a foul mouthed son of his girlfriend.

Barely competent cop James Coffee (Ed Helms) is in a relationship with Vanessa (Taraji P. Henson), whose 12-year old son Kareem (Terrence Little Gardenhigh) is a foul-mouthed kid who doesn’t want any part of Coffee the police officer in their lives.  As Kareem tried to get Coffee out of their lives, he accidentally gets them involved in a drug enterprise.

I did not like this movie at all.

First of all, I hated the way that the Kareem character talked and how the movie glorified it.  The movie constantly showed that the kid was right and his behavior was excused or even shown to be the way it should be.  It was obscene and offensive.

Second, the story was ignorant and totally unrealistic.  The kid was going to hire some people to “paralyze” Coffee because he was sleeping with his mother.  Coincidentally, they walked right in to the middle of the case Coffee had been involved in.  The other characters in this movie, especially the villains were completely over-the-top and ridiculously played.

Ed Helms had some decent moments, but his character and the arc he went through was so painfully predictable that there is practically no reason to watch it.  The relationship with Helms and Gardenhigh was not believable either.  I felt little connection with the pair until the very end.  Then the switch came too suddenly.

Why did Helms want to be with Taraji P. Henson?  I don’t know because they did not seem to have any chemistry and I saw little reason for either of them to have any connection whatsoever.

The film was just too loud and bombastic.  There was nothing worthwhile in the story, the bad cops were so obvious and the events to get to the conclusion were dumb.  The scene with Kareem driving a car, using a handgun, etc were all just stupid.

There was nothing that was funny here.  I have said it before, but funny can overcome plenty of mistakes in a movie. The humor here was so lacking and dumb.

I have already talked more about this one than I should have.  It is a bad movie.

EYG Top 10 Movies from 2009

EYG23

This week’s topic was a weird one for me.  As it popped up on YouTube to watch, the topic said Top 10 Movies of 2009 and I thought, “That’s weirdly generic.”

John and Matt then told about the idea of doing a top ten list for a certain year and they said they used a random generator, so it turned out that the generic comment was right on point.

So 2009… and as I was looking through the list of movies, I was struck with a couple of ideas.  One, mainly, was that I had trouble deciding on a number one.  Nothing jumped out at me as an obvious answer.  To me, there were around three or so that I could consider but none of them truly distanced themselves from each other.  Usually when I do these lists, the number one is obvious and the rest of the list may fall as it may.  Many times I have more issues with the middle of the list because there are times when the film at four or five feel like it is too high, but there are other films to fit there.

It is also interesting that there is no MCU film.  Iron Man started in 2008 and then the next films of the franchise came in 2010.  This was the last time that the MCU has not had at least one film in the calendar year since 2008 (although 2020 is pushing that chance).

I had not started writing movie reviews for EYG yet as of 2009, but I had seen several of these on DVD.  I remember writing a couple of movie reviews on these films from their DVD releases.  It was really 2011 that I made my big move to watch more films in the theater.

Either way, here is the Top 10 Movies of 2009.

Monsters vs. Aliens' 3-D effects win big | City Pages#10.  Monsters vs. Aliens.  This film just made the list last week on the Re-List for Top 10 Dreamworks Animated Movies.  I really enjoyed the film with some of the great new characters that are based on old time monster movies.  There were some great voice acting going on here from Reese Witherspoon to Seth Rogen to Stephen Colbert to Hugh Laurie.    It was extremely fun.

Review: 'Hangover' needs a few shots of 'Old School” – East Bay Times#9.  The Hangover.  This is one of two films on this list that has been damaged by how terrible the sequels were.  The second and third Hangovers were just terrible, but the first one was so good.  I remember just laughing my head off at this movie.  It should have stuck at the first film only.

Moon streaming: where to watch movie online?#8.  Moon.  This is one of those movies that I only watched because I heard it on the Top 10 Show.  Matt Knost raved about it so much that I felt that I needed to see it.  He was right.  It was really a strong, sci-fi film with a great performance from Sam Rockwell.  It has a great twist and it is amazing that this film sneaked by me at the time.  It was just under a decade after it was released before I actually saw it.

Taken Speech: Revisiting the Liam Neeson Movie After 10 Years ...#7.  Taken.  Here is the second film on this list that was damaged by the sequels that followed it.  Taken 2 & 3 literally makes me think less of the original movie, which may not be fair, but it is how I feel.  I remember watching Taken without any expectations and finding it to be such a gem.  Liam Neeson was so believable in a role that you never would have believed he would have been good at.  The quote on the phone is so iconic and perfectly delivered that it will always be remembered as one of the greatest lines of all time.

Inglourious Basterds (7/9) Movie CLIP - Buongiorno (2009) HD - YouTube#6.  Inglorious Basterds.  Quentin Tarantino has made some great films and I loved this World War II farce.  I say farce because of the controversial ending with Tarantino killing Hitler in a manner that challenged the history buffs in the audience.   Then, I do not remember laughing out loud quite as much as when Brad Pitt says “Bon Journo” after he claimed to be able to speak EYE-talian.  That is so subtly brilliant.

Will We Ever Get to See a District 9 Sequel?#5.  District 9.  I have not watched this one much, but I can remember being amazed at how great this film turned out.  Noah Blomkamp’s direction was fantastic.  The story has levels unlike few science fiction movies.  It not only features action and sci-fi beats, but also deals with racism, political thrills, and intelligence.  District 9 is creative and epic.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: great special effects ...#4.  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.  A solid Harry Potter movie with a couple of major story developments at the end.  There is more featuring the ever brilliant Alan Rickman as Severus Snape than previous installments.  You can see the development of the young actors here into the strong performers that they would become.

JJ Abrams' Star Trek Reboot Revisited 10 Years Later – /Film#3.  Star Trek.  The 2009 reboot from J.J. Abrams of the classic science fiction series turned out better than it should have ever done.  The casting, which was probably the single most important part of this reboot, was truly nailed.  These new actors were amazing and embraced their characters without doing imitations of the originals.  This set up the franchise perfectly to continue adventures moving forward without being stuck to the previously told stories.

Amazon.com: Watch Sherlock Holmes (2009) | Prime Video#2.  Sherlock Holmes.  Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes was a great surprise.  I did not know that I was going to love these movies.  The chemistry between Downey Jr as Sherlock and Jude Law as Watson is one of the true reasons to watch this movie.  Guy Ritchie, which seems as if it would be an odd choice for the director’s chair here, knocks this out of the park.  All of the little Guy Ritchie film traits really fit in well with this film.

Zombieland (2009) starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma ...#1.  Zombieland.  As I said, I had a heard time choosing which of these films would be number one.  I finally decided that it would be Zombieland.  I remember the experience of watching this movie in our small local theater and just leaving the theater desperately looking for someone to talk to about it.  I wound up at my friend’s house and wanted to talk about it, but he had not seen it yet, so I could only rave about it.  Everything about Zombieland was just fantastic to me, from the great performances of the four main leads to the unbelievable cameo from Bill Murray to the rules appearing on the screen.  Everything worked for me.  It also makes me want to have a Twinkie.

Honorable Mentions:  I really wanted to include the George Clooney movie Man Who Stared at Goats at #10, but, sadly, I had to bump it. I enjoyed Coraline, but I haven’t seen it in awhile.  I have to rewatch it soon.  Up has a beginning ten minutes that totally destroyed the viewers.  The Blind Side was good, but somewhat overrated.  The Fantastic Mr. Fox was a great animated movie that was just outside the top 10.

Cherry Bomb vs. The Hurricane Schmoedown

rookies

This post will contain ZERO spoilers for this match (maybe one…).

The Patreon match today (which will be released on YouTube to the general public on Friday) is between two rookies and I was inspired to write about them.

I am not giving any spoilers for the match (unless you count the fact that

SPOILER…Andrew Ghai is the manager for the Usual Suspects here).  END SPOILER

But I wanted to talk about these two new competitors and I was inspired from their match.

cherry bombFirst up was Britney Young, nicknamed “Cherry Bomb” as a member of the Dungeon.  Young was a star of the Netflix series GLOW, the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.  This was actually her second time involved with the Movie Trivia Schmoedown as she was in a celebrity match a few years back, playing with the current commissioner Clarke Wolfe.

HurricaneNext is Jader Paramo, known as “The Hurricane.”  Jader was the winner of the special audience competition that was held prior to the Orlando event.  He won one of the “Golden Tickets” (story which he talks about in the video so I won’t go into it) placing him in a competition with four fans.  His victory in Orlando earned him a match in season 7.  He wound up with the Usual Suspects faction.

I will admit that it typically takes me some time to enjoy rookies in the Movie Trivia Schmoedown.  Not to name any specific names, but some of them come in way too cocky for my liking and I do not find any real reason to cheer for them.

However, that was not the case for these two new competitors.  Both of them came off extremely charming and likable.  They were funny and quick-witted.  Their interaction was outstanding and refreshing.  The game was solid (no spoilers).

And although one of them won and one of them lost (no spoilers), I would find myself cheering for either moving forward and looking forward to seeing them both to continue the positivity.

If you want to see this match early, join the MTS Patreon page at the $10 level to get it on Monday.  I believe lower $ levels get it later that week.  That $10 level is well worth the money.
