6 Underground

I saw this on Netflix and I was intrigued.  I like Ryan Reynolds a lot.  Then I saw the director:  Michael Bay.

Now, I am not a Michael Bay hater, per se.  I mean, yes I hated the Transformers movies and there are other Bay movies that I disliked, but I also liked Pain & Gain, 13 Hours and The Rock.  So there is that.

6 Underground is THE MOST Michael Bay movie I have ever seen.  That may or may not be a good thing depending on who you are.  For me, it was definitely NOT a good thing..

What did it include?

Explosions ✔

Slow Motion ✔

Car Chases ✔

Explosions ✔

Montages with bad rock music ✔

Pop Culture references ✔

Explosions ✔

Needless shots of beautiful (usually scantily clad) women ✔

Explosions ✔

I checked out on this one very early.  I was bored.  Not even Ryan Reynolds’ charm could save this turd.

When it first came on screen, Reynolds said that he was a ghost and the ghost has one superpower, which was to haunt the living.  And I thought this was going to be the literal story.  I thought, “Hm, what a strange and intriguing idea.  Maybe RIPD with a better story or execution?”

Nope.  They meant “ghost” as a person who fakes their death to drop off the radar and then become a mercenary.  Suddenly much less interesting, but I gave it a chance.

The dialogue was terrible.  Nobody really talks like that.  None of the characters stood, with the possible exception of Corey Hawkins as Seven.  The rest are cliches and underwritten stereotypes.

I really should have watched The Mandalorian instead.  Michael Bay fans may love this.  I hope they do.

Jumanji: The Next Level

Image result for jumanji the next level poster

When Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle came out, I had very little interest (outside of Dwayne Johnson, whom I love).  The sequel had no business of being any good.  And yet, it crushed it, both critically and monetarily.

Could they do it again?  That was another point where I was just not sure and I was nervous about.

After seeing The Next Level, I have nothing to worry about.

Spencer (Alex Wolff) has been having problems since leaving the world of Jumanji.  It had become so bad that he decided to go back into the game for a chance to feel the power and confidence of Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson).  When his friends discovered that he had gone into Jumanji alone, they chose to follow him in to help him with his quest.

However, there were some switches of characters that were unexpected and brought a different set of challenges.  When you add Danny DeVito and Danny Glover into the mix, you amp up the comedy part of this comedy/adventure movie.

As with the previous movie, one of the best parts of The Next Level is the cast including Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black.  These four, especially Black and Hart, bring their A-game to this movie, providing an imitation of the actors/characters that is extremely well done.  Kevin Hart’s version of Danny Glover is spot on and never fails to be hilarious.

They also bring a plot point into the film as they near the third act that feels effective and helped to maintain the freshness of the performances, particularly Dwayne Johnson’s Danny DeVito imitation, which was threatening to run its course.  The plot point helped the movie dramatically.  It was also something that made sense in the world of video games.

There are similarities to Welcome to the Jungle, but I feel that they tweaked sections in different ways that really helped to provide the variety in the scenes.  Plus, it is just a fun and extremely funny movie with lots of adventure.

The CGI was very well done with all of the animals that the group had to face.  The herd of ostriches was especially great.

I thoroughly enjoyed the entire Jumanji: The Next Level.  The changes they made were refreshing and the adjustment through the movie made perfect sense in storytelling.  The cast is still the selling point of this movie as they are able to show their talents and knowledge of these characters, while clearly having fun making this movie.  A very worthy addition to the Jumanji franchise.

Black Christmas (2019)

Image result for black christmas movie poster

I had never seen the previous versions of Black Christmas, the 1974 original, which horror aficionados consider a classic in the slasher genre, or the 2006 remake, so I was not weighed down by any previous feelings toward the film.

However, I had seen the trailer fro this new version, and I feel that, after viewing the trailer, I basically saw the film itself.  I was not sure why I needed to see this movie since they showed me so much in the trailer.  Film critic William Bibbiani tweeted that he thought so initially too, but that, after seeing it, the film held more back than he thought.  Okay, so I decided to give it a chance.

After seeing it, I do still think they gave way too much away in the trailer, but there are a few things that are left for discovery in the movie.  One of the biggest was actually one of the parts I liked the least.

I have heard a lot of negative reviews directed towards Black Christmas (2019) but I did not think it deserved as much vitriol as it has received.  It is fine.

A group of sorority sisters were being hunted by an underground cult/cabal from a misogynistic fraternity who were looking to force women in their proper place.  Riley (Imogen Poots) had a past experience with the fraternity that has informed her opinion and the opinions of the others in her sorority.

I was actually enjoying a good chunk of the opening hour or so of the film, but I thought the ending went fairly wanky and relied too much on exposition to reveal what the film needed us to know.  The last half hour or so weakened the film for me.

I also believe that Cary Elwes, who played Professor Gelson, was totally wasted here.  He had some early scenes that could have been creepy and mysterious had the trailer not spoiled it for me.

The message of this movie could have benefited from being more subtle than it was.  There is a clear and unmistakably apparent message that is drilled throughout the film and, while it is a very important message for today’s world, it was less effective with the preachy aspect of it.  The best horror films use symbolism to provide a message in the story, but it does not have to be as blatant as it is in Black Christmas.

The cast does a solid job of making me feel for the characters and to draw the contrast between them.  Each girl had a trait or quirk that made them individuals, something that a lot of these movies do not take the time to do.  A special shout out to Aleyse Shannon, who played Kris, who I thought was one of the most interesting actors in the ensemble.  You could see the spark while she was on screen.

I am torn about whether to recommend this film.  On one hand, I do think it is a better film than it is getting credit for, but it clearly has some major issues in storytelling and theme.  In the end, I walked out of the theater with the mindset that it was better than I expected and so, I will give it the slight recommendation.   And if you can go into Black Christmas without seeing the trailer, do it.

Image result for dan murrell schmoedownPlayer of the year:  Dan Murrell. It was tight, but Dan won the singles title, defended it, won the teams title, defended it, won the Free4All.  Runners-Up:  William Bibbiani, Mike Kalinowski, Ben Bateman, Rachel Cushing

Team of the Year: Shirewolves.  This was really tough too.  The year was split into two halves in team competition and the Shirewolves just had a more dominant first half than anyone else.  Runners-Up:  Founding Fathers, Shazam, KOrruption, Odd Couple, Who’s the Boss

Manager of the Year:  Tom Dagnino.  He solidified this award in the last few months.  The first half of the year, it looked as if Tom was done.  After Spectacular, clearly he is on top of the world and the leading candidate for 2020.  Runners-Up: Roxy Striar, Kaiser, Ken and Grace.

Live Event of the Year:  Free4All.  Just a great day with Bibbs and his incredible run, Murrell picking up the win, The Kid announcing himself a star.  Always such an unpredictable day.  Runners-Up Schmoedown Spectacular IV, Houston,  New York.

Related imageRookie of the Year:  Kevin Smets.  This is one that was won at the Spectacular.  When he won the IG title in a pretty dominant fashion and Oyama dropped his title, Smets calimed this award.  He was one word (Peter) away from undefeated.  Runners-Up:  Paul Oyama, Tom, Paul Preston.

Faction of the Year:  The Five Horsemen.  Another one that did not look to be happening at the year’s start, but the Horsemen stood tall at the end of the Spectacular.  Runners-Up:  The Dungeon, KOrruption

Face of the Year:  Rachel Cushing.  Still just a great face character and a wonderful human being.  I hope rachel is having a good retirement.  Runners-Up:  Dan Murrell, John Rocha, William Bibbiani, The Kid.

Image result for kalinowski schmoedownHeel of the Year:  Mike Kalinowski.  He was really more of a tweener this season for most of the time, but Mike knew how to push the fans buttons if he needed to and we saw that at the Spectacular again.  Runners-Up:  Andrew Ghai, Kaiser, Paul Oyama

Moment of the Year:  John Rocha shows up at Spectacular.  Is Rocha gonna show up?  He has been sick in real life and now his match with the Founding Fathers vs. Shazam is in question.  Great moment when those lights go down and even better performance from the Outlaw.  Runners-Up:  Matt Atchity challenges his team’s win, Bibbiani goes #1 to #40 in Free4All, Andrew Ghai returns at Spectacular IV, Ben Bateman spins Spinner’s Choice twice in Houston, Shirewolves retire.

Shock of the Year:  Shirewolves announce retirement.  Who saw this coming?  Apparently Rachel was burning out and needed time off.  The Shirewolves were dominant and their departure opened the league wide up.  Runners-Up:  Matt Atchity challenges his team’s win, Andrew Ghai retires in backstage interview, The Nuke, Dagnino wins Draft Bowl.

Image result for Greg Alba at Free4allBest Cosplay/Costume of Year:  Greg Alba from Free4All. He came out in the outfit of Bradley Cooper from A Star is Born and acted out the scene where Cooper pissed himself.  Hilarious on the live stage.  Runners-Up: Chandru Dhandapani, Jeanine the Machine.

Best Competitor (Entrance):  William Bibbiani.  No one does more creative entrances, whether it is as a single or as a team, than William Bibbiani.  He is constantly raising his game in the ideas.  Runners-Up:  The Paddington Two, Jeanine the Machine.

Related imageBackstage Interview of the Year:  Founding Fathers lose to KOrruption in sudden death.  Such emotion in this interview that Jenn Sterger nearly started crying too.  Both John Rocha and Dan Murrell were questioning themselves but they turned it back to gold.  Runners-Up:  Founding Fathers win titles, Mike Kalinowski wins IG title, Founding fathers defend titles at Spectacular.

Best Promo Guy:  Ken Napzok.  There is some serious competition here too, but Ken is just so good on the mike that it reminds you of the best years of Cactus Jack, Ric Flair or other star wrestlers.  Runners-Up: John Rocha, Mike Kalinowski, Andrew Ghai, William Bibbiani.

Best Interviewer:  Jenn Sterger.  No contest.  She is just the best.  She can give with the best and can get the emotions out of everyone.  She is not afraid to ask the tough questions.  The backstage interviews are never as good when she is not there.  Runners-Up:  Emma Fyffe, Brianne Chandler.

Image result for Loony Bin SchmoedownBest Character(s):  The Loony Bin.  Where did these two come from?  Video Drew and Tom exploded on the scene and became everyone’s favorite new characters with the awesome new gimmick.  And, they are dang good at the game too.  Runners-Up:  Andrew Ghai, Robert Meyer Burnett, Mike Kalinowski

Innergeekdom Player of the Year:  Mike Kalinowski.  Even with the tough defeat at Spectacular, Mike wins this one.  He defeated Rachel Cushing to win the title and he defeated Smets for the first time.  It was close with Smets, but Mike gets this one.  Runners-Up:  Kevin Smets, Chandru Dhandapani, Rachel Cushing.

Best on the Desk:  Mark Ellis.  Still the best…around.  Mark Ellis has the best quips, the best banter and…comedy..ha ha ha ha ha. Runners-Up:  Ken Napzok, Clarke Wolfe, Kristian Harloff, Danielle Radford, Emma Fyffe

Superman #18

Truth

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis

Artist:  Ivan Reis

Cover Art:  Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, Alex Sinclair

I have not collected Superman.  I have picked up certain significant issues of the Man of Steel because I am a comic book fan and I am curious.  That is the situation I was in today as I was looking at the issue of Superman where Brian Michael Bendis had Superman reveal to the world that his secret identity was Clark Kent.

I liked the issue itself.  Superman was shown making the final decision, understanding that the identity of Clark Kent was really unnecessary, at least the dual identity part of it.  We see Superman telling the people closest to him in his life who did not already know such as Perry White and Jimmy Olson.  Then we see the press conference to reveal to the world.

Spoilers:  The best part of the whole issue was the reaction of one specific super villain at the end of the book.

This felt like a nice character piece dealing with what had to be a huge deal in the DC Universe.  There was a lot of dialogue and discussion which was well done.  It was very much a Bendis book in this way.

I do not think this means that I am going to start reading Superman all of a sudden, but I did enjoy this issue.  It may make me take a peek at the next issue to see if they can maintain this kind of momentum.  If you like Superman, I think this is a solid read.  I do wonder if long time fans will react to this the way they reacted to the reveal of Peter Parker in Civil War.  Since Superman is not a character I generally gravitate towards, this felt fine.  I am intrigued to see what the rest of the world thinks.

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #14

A Night Off

Writer:  Tom Taylor

Artist:  Marguerite Sauvage (flashbacks) Ken Lashley

Cover Art:  Andrew C. Robinson

Okay, I feel a rant coming on.

It was just a few weeks ago that I found out that Loki #5 would be the final issue of that series, a series that I had found to be one of the best that Marvel published.  It was a blow, no doubt, because this was extraordinary.

Now this is so much worse.

I absolutely love Spider-Man.  He is easily my favorite fictional character, not just super hero, but fictional character anywhere, movies, TV, comics, literature.  Anywhere.  I have always enjoyed the Amazing Spider-Man book and other places where I can consume the Wall-Crawler’s adventures.

Then I started reading Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.  I honestly am not sure when I realized that this book was the best Spider-Man book on the market, but it absolutely is.  Every issue was something that touched me deeply and renewed my love for Peter Parker.

Issue #14 is the final issue of this series.

Not only is it the final issue, but it is an issue that is just damn brilliant, which makes it all the more difficult to comprehend.

I have said this before, but I guess I can only say it once more.  Tom Taylor is one of the greatest Spider-Man writers in years.  He clearly understands the character and places him into situations that provide Spidey with the opportunity to show what an amazing character he is.

When I read the final letter page on the final page, I saw a response from Tom Taylor that placed my thoughts on Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man into perfect perspective.  He wrote:

“By design, this was not a big blockbuster book.  This was a smaller, more personal book.”

This was 100% it. It felt more intimate.  I still love Amazing, but there are always grand, sweeping crossovers and major events. This was something small and meaningful to the individual.  It was originally drew me to Spider-Man.  This is one of the few books that shows how Spider-Man can affect the people around him and how important he is to their life.  Without spoiling this final issue, the “villain” of the piece responds to Spider-Man in a manner that we have not seen before, and Spider-Man reacts to this character in such a perfect Spider-Man way that it almost made me well up.

Tom Taylor was able to balance Spidey’s iconic wit/banter with his internal struggle toward heroism in a way that, in many times, was different than any other comic book story.  Spidey was able to use his brains in many issues without having to regress to violence.  It is a part of the character that sometimes gets left out, but his intelligence combined with his humanity is signally Spider-Man.

I loved Spider-Man when I was younger because of how much of a hero he was.  He was as likely to try and save the life of the villain trying to kill him as he was to save the bystander.  Life had value for Spider-Man and he would do whatever he could to persevere.  I loved that.  It helped make me the person I am today.  Tom Taylor was able to tap into that vein of the character once again.  Every time I would read Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Taylor’s writing and character development would remind me of the feelings I had when I first read the unexpectedly poignant short story, “The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man.”

I had been afraid that this was going to happen.  I had been missing the book in the Previews section, but I had hoped it would be published on a semi-regular basis.  Sadly, that is not the case and FNS has come to an end.

If there are readers out there who love Spider-Man (heck, even just like the character), do yourself a favor and pick up this issue, heck pick up the entire Tom Taylor run, because it is some of the best Spider-Man you will ever read.

With great sadness comes great irrationality?

I now must place this book on the list with Mockingbird and Loki as books cancelled WAY TOO SOON!!!!

Thank you to Tom Taylor and the rest of the creative forces that worked on this book.  You gave me many issues of pleasure.

EYG Top 10 Comedy Ensemble Movies

EYG23

It is Tuesday and that means the Top 10 Show is here to entertain.  It was interesting because you could see here the beginning of John Rocha’s illness that played such a huge dramatic role in the Schmoedown Spectacular this past weekend.  Feel better Outlaw!  We love you!

Anyway, John and Matt were talking this week of Top 10 Comedy Ensemble Movies in honor of the upcoming Jumanji: The Next Level this weekend.  The last Jumanji film was such a pleasant surprise that I hope this next one can live up to it. I have heard some initial positive word of mouth so here’s hopin’.

Comedy ensembles can be a challenge.  Especially when I do not like Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler.  Spoiler…neither of those two wind up on this list.

So…let’s move along…

Image result for moonrise kingdom kiss#10.  Moonrise Kingdom.  The Wes Anderson film that included a bunch of his normal crew of actors (Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray) telling a coming of age story and a sweet tale of young love.  Honestly, though it comes across sweet, it seemed as if Anderson got away with quite a bit having these young kids in their underwear kissing.  I would be lying if I didn’t say that I felt a little awkward at first.

Image result for fargo movie#9.  Fargo.  A dark comedy from the Coen Brothers.  An amazing performance from a great ensemble cast, including Frances McDormand as the pregnant police officer Marge Gunderson, William H. Macy as car salesman Jerry Lundegaard,  Jerry sets up a complicated plan to kidnap his wife to extort money from her wealthy father.  And then, all manner of problems ensue.  Ah, jeez.  Fargo was a film that I was not fond of the first time I watched it but on a reviewing, I found myself much more engaged with the dark humor.

Image result for dogma kevin smith#8.  Dogma.  My favorite Kevin Smith film is Dogma.  I have a figurine of Buddy Christ.  Such a wonderful story that sure rubbed many people the wrong way.  But I love the story of Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck), two angels who had been expelled from Heaven but who had found a loophole to return that could prove God fallible and thus bring down the world as we know it.  Pushing the envelope in a very funny way, Kevin Smith had a tremendous cast here including the ever brilliant Alan Rickman.

Image result for a mighty wind#7.  A Mighty Wind.  Christopher Guest films are always funny because of the talented cast that he assembles.  They have to be talented because most of the dialogue in the film is ablibbed.  A Mighty Wind is a love letter to folk music by looking at the strangest group of characters you will ever see.  And the music is always great as well.  Who could guess that these comedians were such talented musicians.

Image result for big lebowski#6.  The Big Lebrowski.  Again, I have just recently watched this and I usually am not a fan of stoner comedies, but I found that I loved The Big Lebrowski.  Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Elliott, and others made this a great ensemble cast.

Image result for monty python and the holy grail bridge#5.  Monty Python and the Holy Grail.  What is your name?  What is your quest?  What is your favorite color?  Sounds easy right?  You would think.  But do you know the capital of Assyria?  And what if your confused about whether your favorite color is Blue or yellow?  Who knew these would be important questions when looking for the Holy Grail?  And Monty Python’s best movie is always hilarious.

Image result for young frankenstein#4,  Young Frankenstein.  A perfect satire on the old Universal Monsters and monster movies.  Gene Wilder is a great descendant of Victor Frankenstein and his comic timing is amazing.  This Mel Brooks film is shot in a beautiful black and white and each amazing actor in this ensemble brings something unique and funny.

Related image#3. Ghostbusters.  One of my all time favorites movies.  Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson became an icon quartet and their epic battle with Gozer in the form of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man simply blew my mind.  Ghostbusters is endlessly quotable and the dialogue is some of the smartest and funniest you will find.  They have never quite found the recipe for the Ghostbusters since this first movie, but it is a classic.  Make sure you do not cross those streams.

Related image#2.  This is Spinal Tap.  The mockumentary from director Rob Reiner looks at an aging heavy metal band named Spinal Tap who are past heir prime but holding on with everything they have.  Like A Mighty Wind, the music here is meant to be a joke, but it is actually great.  I have all of the Spinal Tap albums.  Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer make a great team and the story in this mockumentary is surprisingly emotional.  Turn it up to 11 and watch this movie.

Image result for princess bride#1.  The Princess Bride.  The greatest comedy of all time.  Another Rob Reiner film, The Princess Bride has a cast filled with amazing actors such as Mandy Patinkin, Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, Andre the Giant, Wallace Shawn, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, Chris Sarandon, Carol Kane, Fred Savage, Peter Falk.  Scene after scene from this movie are better than the last.  One of the most quotable movies of all time, all it takes is someone to say the word “inconceivable” and everyone knows to what you refer.  The Princess Bride, a masterpiece of comedy and film making.  No other movie like it.

Honorable Mentions:  I thought about Airplane, a film I loved as a youth, but honestly, I have not seen it in decades and I am not sure it would hold up.  The first Hangover movie was funny, but it was tainted forever by the second and third one.  The classic comedy Clue has a great cast (Michael McKean too, who is in two other films on the list).  Since this was in honor of the new Jumanji movie, perhaps the last Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a option though it feels less of a comedy than an action/adventure.

CW Crisis on Infinite Earths

Spoilers

It has been a long time since I watched The Flash on the CW.  The seasons got too long for me and the episodes felt as if they were all the same.

As the Arrowverse shows continued to grow, I never got into them any more than the little bit of The Flash that I watched.

However, the crossover of CW shows, Crisis on Infinite Earths, based on one of the greatest maxi-series in the history of DC Comics, got my attention.

It started tonight on Supergirl and I was excited to watch.  I must say that there were plenty of things that I was trying to decipher, since I am not a regular viewer of these shows.  I do have more background knowledge of DC Comics than most other viewers so I am recognizing the names and guessing how they fit together.  I can imagine this is like those people who had not watched the entire MCU films but only watched Infinity War and Endgame.

Green Arrow’s death at the end of the first hour of the crossover was a surprise, but I know this is the final season of that show so it is not totally shocking.  Honestly, the death was a bit cheesy to me.  I am still waiting to see if that death sticks because, you know, it is a comic book show.

There were some cool cameos, including Burt Ward from Batman ’66 on one of the earths.  “Holy crimson skies of death!”   We saw Robert Wuhl as Alexander Knox from 1989’s Batman.

There was a nice homage to Superman: The Movie too, but that one felt like a throwaway part considering there was no other reason for it.  Baby Jonathan was sent off by his parents Clark and Lois in his own little rocket ship (they also used the same dialogue from the movie) but it turned out to be an unimportant twist (at least at this point).

We see the Monitor, Harbinger and Pariah, all faces that the shows have had before.

I kind of enjoyed the little bit I got of Batwoman.

I thought this was a lot of fun and I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the story.

Waves

Image result for waves poster

This one felt strange to me.

First, I would state that the performances in Waves are top notch, especially from Taylor Russell as Emily and Kelvin Harrison Jr as Tyler.  Most of the film is shot beautifully and it does have some emotional wallop in the story.

However, it also feels as if the story itself was all over the place.  Overlong and erratic, Waves seemed to completely switch the story about two-thirds through the film where the main protagonist is changed and the focus on the film changes dramatically.  It was really a strange watch.

The film starts focusing on Tyler, a high school wrestler who seems to have everything, and we see how his life begins to unravel and how these stresses and problems take a toll on his life.  His slow descent into anger is difficult to watch as he continued to make poor decisions.  Those decisions were taking effects on the people in his life.  His overbearing and hard-nosed father Ronald (Sterling K. Brown) is pushing his son hard in every part of his life.

A shoulder injury threatened to end his wrestling.  His girlfriend Alexis (Alexa Demie) brings an unexpected problem and everything starts to weigh down Tyler.

There were amazing performances here and there were several real emotional moments.  They had some great shots and director Trey Edwards Shults does an admirable job doing things that are outside the box.

I was engaged until the strange shift in the narrative which felt so weird.  It dropped what was being a solid film into one where I still liked but found clunky.  After the switch, Taylor Russell was still exceptional (she brought a beautiful presence to the screen) and she has a bright future ahead of her.  She will be a star.  Lucas Hedges was really fantastic too.    The problem is theor parts just came out of nowhere.  The film never got its flow back after the flip.

EYG Top 3 Memes of 2019

There are memes every year.. in fact, too many to deal with.  However, we at EYG like to pick out a couple of the biggies for the year and highlight them here.

I have chosen three memes for the year.

#3.  Ok, Boomer.

Image result for ok boomer

From a Google search: “Thousands of teens have responded through remixed reaction videos and art projects with a simple phrase: “ok boomer.” “Ok boomer” has become Generation Z’s endlessly repeated retort to the problem of older people who just don’t get it, a rallying cry for millions of fed up kids.”

#2.  Baby Yoda.

Image result for baby yoda meme

Baby Yoda has become a phenomenon from Disney +’s Star Wars program, The Mandalorian.  Baby Yoda is cuter than all get out and it has inspired a rush of memes.

#1.  Nancy Pelosi’s clap.

It was the State of the Union and it sure seemed as if Nancy Pelosi was conveying a message to President Donald Trump besides just applause.  At least, the Internet sure thought so.

The EYG Worst Movies of the Decade #90-81

WorstMoviesDecade

Saw some more tweets about how terrible the “Worst of” lists are and how no one should be doing them.  To that I say…. if you do not like posts that list the “worst of” then don’t read them.  However, it is my right to do them if I so choose.

I chose not to comment on the Tweet, which I wanted to but I avoided.  I was proud of myself.

Anyway… here are the nest 10.

#90-81

Image result for a team movie#90.  The A-Team.  I was looking forward to this one, but I was really disappointed.  I watched the TV show as a youngster but the movie was severely lacking.

#89.  Hangover 3.  This was actually the best of the Hangover sequels (there may be another one of those on this list eventually. SPOILER).  Too many penises all over the place.

#88.  The Nun.  This one made a lot of money considering, but the film was just not that scary.  Maybe a sequel will do better like Annabelle did.

Image result for dark phoenix movie#87.  Dark Phoenix.  The final FOX X-Men movie was not good.  This was the second time that FOX was unable to make a good film based on the Phoenix Saga.  Maybe Marvel Studios will give it a shot at some point.

#86.  RIPD.  This was basically Men in Black with ghosts.  Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges should have made this more successful, but this comic book adaptation was anything but.

#85.  Neighbors 2.  I did not like this movie or the original.  Too much juvenile humor in my mind, despite a solid cast.

Image result for lone ranger movie#84.  The Lone Ranger.  This movie did not know what tone it wanted to have or what kind of movie it wanted to be.  Johnny Depp as Tonto was most likely a poor decision.

#83.  Jonah Hex.  Another DC property that did not work despite seemingly being cast well.  I did not hate this as much as many, but there is no denying that the film was not good.

Image result for tmnt out of the shadows#82.  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:  Out of the Shadows.  This was the last time the Turtles have made the big screen.  It was one of the worst times as well.

#81.  Inherent Vice.  This one a lot of people liked, but I found it boring and confusing.  I honestly do not remember much about it.

Marriage Story

Image result for marriage story poster

There has been lots of buzz for Marriage Story, the new film directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, which tells the story of a couple heading for divorce.

I had heard some great things about Marriage Story, but honestly it did not sound like something that I was going to be interested in.  After opening in select theaters, Marriage Story would wind up streaming on Netflix so viewing it would be simple.  Still, it was not something that I was anticipating.

Then I saw it.

Wow.  What a brilliant movie.

Adam Driver plays a stage director named Charlie and Scarlett is his wife and actress Nicole.  The film starts off in a beautiful way, but then it pulls the rug out from you.  I won’t reveal how because it is a wonderful opening.

They have a son named Henry (Azhy Robertson).  They work on their play in New York and then Nicole got a pilot in Los Angeles.  This is what started the end of the marriage, though there were other factors in pay already.

Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson are utterly awesome in these roles. They bring such humor and pain to every minute and nothing is wasted. You can see from both points of view during the film with neither side being completely wrong, but not completely right either.  I can not imagine that Driver or Johansson will not be nominated for Academy Awards for these roles. If they are ignored, that would be a terrible snub.

This is a wonderful character driven story that focuses on its great leads, but there are also some amazing supporting characters in the movie.  Alan Alda and Laura Dern are potentially award deserving for their roles as divorce lawyers who are both straight forward but also two-faced.  You can tell why lawyers get a bad reputation from some of the tactics that they take, and yet they are clearly real people who have feelings and are complex.  We also have Ray Liotta, Shawn Wallace, and Julie Hagerty in supporting roles that are original and fun.

There are some scenes that simply dropped my jaw.  There is one scene between Johansson and Driver where they are fighting that was utterly tense and distressing.  This would be their Oscar submission, I think.

This movie is filled with pain, but also a joy of life that comes through clearly.  Divorce is a difficult time and it leaves scars, but it is something that you can make it through.  I was surprised how much I loved this movie.  I did not expect to love it this much, but the two lead actors are so great, and the film is so well created that you cannot help but llove it.

2019 “I See Kid Actor” Award

Kid Actor

This has been a fantastic year for the child actors.  There is a crop of actors who just seem to bring it every time.  The days of it being acceptable practice to have a kid actor who cannot hold their own are over.  Heck, there are projects that are the lead of the show.

This can be a kid actor from either movies or television.

#2.  Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit)

Image result for roman griffin davis jojo rabbit

If someone had told me that Roman Griffin Davis wasn’t going to win this award this year, I would have laughed in their face because he was so brilliant in Jojo Rabbit that he was a shoo-in.  This is one of the best kid performances ever.  In fact, it other years, Kyliegh Curran‘s work in Doctor Sleep, the Good Boys cast, or Saniyya Sidney‘s Fast Color could have won this.  The Stranger Things 3 cast is great every time they appear.  Asher Angel & Jack Dylan Grazer made a wonderful pairing in the DC Comics movie Shazam. Julia Butters had my favorite scene in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in HollywoodLouis Ashbourne Serkis was the modern day King Arthur with Excalibur.  Charlie Shotwell led the horror movie Eli on Netflix.  Gabriel Bateman led the remake of Child’s Play and he was vital to make that film work.  Even though The Goldfinch was terrible, Oakes Fegley wasn’t the issue.

And the winner…

Noah Jupe (Honey Boy)

Image result for noah jupe honey boy

Noah Jupe was transcendent in Honey Boy, the film based on the life of Shia LaBeouf.  He had to carry so much of the emotional weight of the film that Honey Boy would never have worked.  He took this character through the spectrum and it was a marvel to watch.
