Dark Waters

Image result for dark waters poster

This is a true story that is just shocking because you have no option but to accept the fact that the world is full of just evil people who do terrible things to people over money.  There is no denying it.  Some companies have individuals who will hide the most amoral acts because for these acts to be revealed will lose the companies money.

Mark Ruffalo is tremendous as always playing a real life hero Robert “Rob” Bilott, a corporate lawyer who gets involved with a farmer from his hometown whose cows are dying at an alarming rate.  Turns out that the corporation DuPont has been dumping poisonous chemicals into West Virginia landfills that comes from the creation of Teflon.

Watching what this case does to Mark Ruffalo’s character is one of the biggest takeaways from this movie.  The affect of this case on his health, his marriage, his career is just shocking, making this real life man all the more heroic in that he continued to fight through all of the years.

And watching DuPont pull their dirty, underhanded tricks was just as powerful.  Victor Gerber played DuPont CEO Phil Donnelly and there are times when even he shows the anguish of what he is doing to hide this secret.  Gerber does a great job providing this monster of a man with some humanity after all.

Rob’s wife Sarah (Anne Hathaway) is as affected by the case as her husband is and you see how she deals with the stress and, at times, the danger that she has been brought into unwillingly.  Anne Hathaway gives a top notch and human performance.

The investigation of the case is fascinating and very interesting to me.  I am amazed at some of the things that happen and admire the individuals involved for their perseverance.

The movie did get a tad long at times, but it actually does an admirable job following this case along for what turned out to be years.  It was the third movie I saw today and that may have contributed to the feeling of length for me.

This movie poster says that “from Participant, who brought you Spotlight and The Post.”  Participant is a production company that has apparently done a bunch of really great movies.  Spotlight and The Post both share some DNA with Dark Waters.  They have the same feel and the same tone to them.  Hopefully they continue to find these true stories that deserve more focus because I had no idea about this until I saw the promotion of this movie.  And this is something that we all should know.

Playmobil: The Movie

Playmobil: The Movie Poster

I do not think that I am going to have much to say about this one.

It was terrible.

It was a poor man’s Lego Movie and it did not work anywhere near that.

We started with live action as Anya Taylor-Joy as Marla and Gabriel Bateman as Charlie, a brother and sister whose parents died in a car crash years ago and that moment shifted their relationship.  They wind up getting caught in a mysterious world where they are PLAYMOBIL® characters with their locked out legs and pincher fingers.  They get separated (Charlie, who is in a body of a viking with super strength) and Marla has to try to find her brother before it is too late.

The story was dumb.  The voice acting was adequate.  The animation was fine, but it was clearly wanting to be more like The Lego Movie and it fails at that.

Instead of trying to be the Lego Movie, it should have been its own thing and find the strength of PLAYMOBIL®.  There did not seem to be any.  It was dull and predictable and the secondary characters all made me think of other, more iconic characters.  There was a character that made me think of James Bond.  One that made me think of Boba Fett.  One that made me think of Zach Galifianakis.  Pirate guy too.  The villain was basically Nero from Rome.  Just imitations of better toys or characters.

This is already more than I intended to talk about this movie.  The music was pretty lacking as well.  Save yourself some time and just re-watch The Lego Movie.  It is much better .

Honey Boy

Image result for honey boy poster

Shia LaBeouf based this film on his own personal experiences.  This makes me want to reconsider my thoughts on Shia as an actor because he clearly had demons that he had to get through.

Honey Boy stars Shia LaBeouf as James Lort, the father and personal assistant of a young child star named Otis (Noah Jupe).   We also see Otis as a young adult (Lucas Hedges) facing the darkness of his past while he is in rehab.  Honey Boy plays out in both time lines with powerhouse performances as the relationship between father and son takes center stage.

Noah Jupe is downright spectacular.  The brilliance of this performance, as he has to face off with Shia LaBeouf in a high percentage of scenes, is unbeleivable.  This young actor goes through so many emotions and feelings during this film and he does so believably and passionately.  It is one of the best child performances of the year, if not the decade.  So much rides on this young boy to carry the weight of these scenes in the face of Shia LaBeouf, who is giving one of the best performances of his own career.  Noah Jupe makes this film.

I was less impressed with Lucas Hedges in the older Otis role because I feel as if I had seen this before.  Still, I don’t want to criticize him too badly because there is some solid work by Hedges, but the film really pops when Shia LaBeouf and Noah Jupe are on the screen.

Every moment that Shia LaBeouf and Noah Jupe share you feel the sensation that at any second all hell could break loose.  It is a noticeable anxiety faced by the audience between these two characters.  You can see how much young Otis just wants to have his father be a father to him, but you are always wondering if James is capable of doing that.  No matter how cruel or obnoxious James is, Otis wants a real relationship.

You can tell that James loves his son, but it seems as if he does not trust himself to be worthy of Otis, especially with Otis in a more prominent position as money provider.

There are some dark and heartbreaking scenes in this movie that stick with you long after you leave the theater.  It is truly an intimate story from the world of fame and the personal struggles that go along with it.

EYG Top 100 Movies of the Decade #90-81

Top100

#90-81

We continue on with our list of the Top 100 movies of the decade according to EYG.

Related image#90. Creed.  A film that I did not think was going to work, turned out great as Ryan Coogler had his second great hit with Michael B. Jordan.  Sylvester Stallone resumed his role as Rocky Balboa and wowed everyone.

#89.  The Big Short.  The ensemble film that told the story of the 2007-2008 financial crisis that was triggered by the housing market.  Adam McKay turned what could have been a boring topic into an entertaining romp.

Image result for dont breathe movie#88.  Don’t Breathe.  A horror/thriller that was as intense as it could possibly be that included a frighteningly intimidating performance from Stephen Lang.

#87.  Wind River.  Jeremy Renner helps with an investigation from FBI agent Elizabeth Olson about a dead body found in the snow.  Two great performances from these two Avengers.

Image result for nebraska movie#86.  Nebraska.  On old man thinks he has won the Publisher’s Clearing House and insists on his son driving him to the state capital to collect.  An amazing character story with an epic performance from Bruce Dern and one from June Squibb.

#85.  Mud.  Matthew McConaughey played a fugitive named Mud who meets two young boys who found him living on an island.  Mud is a fascinating story that focuses on the life of the young boy, played by Tye Sheridan.

Image result for three identical strangers#84.  Three Identical Strangers.  The first documentary on the list and it tells you a story that is almost too unbeleivable to believe about three men who were triplets separated at birth.  And that is not the most shocking part of the story.

#83.  Life of Pi.  A masterful film, gorgeous visuals signifying the advancement of CGI and the artistry of the images.  Directed wonderfully by Ang Lee, Life of Pi is astounding to see.

#82.  Shazam.  The DC hero once called “Captain Marvel” had his own stand alone film this past year and it was highly entertaining.  Funny and exciting, Shazam was very important for DC films.

Image result for rami malek bohemian rhapsody#81.  Bohemian Rhapsody.  “Is this the real life?  Is this just fantasy?”  The biopic of Queen worked because of the brilliant music of Queen and a spot on performance from Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury.

2019 YouTube Host of the Year

Image result for youtube

Continuing the look at the EYG 2019 and YouTube, I have a list for the Top 10 YouTube hosts of the year.  It is quite the potpourri of individuals here as well.

#10.  Lamar (The Matthews Family).  He is one of the best reactors I have come across.  There is something about his laugh that just fills my heart full of happiness.  I loved his reactions to Epic Rap Battle and Weird Al Yankovic.

Image result for dorina collider live#9.  Dorina (Collider Live).  “The most evil of all time” Dorina came on Collider Live as a part timer about midway through the year and she has become so popular that she is now a co-host with Roxy Striar.

#8.  Hal Rudnick (Movie Fights Live).  Hal  really came into his own as the host and one of the judges of the debate show, Movie Fights Live.  He is funny and quick witted.  Hoot Hoot #OwlNation.

Image result for scott mantz FYC#7.  Scott Mantz (Collider FYC).  I love Scott Mantz.  He has so much energy and enthusiasm about what he loves that he is just completely engaging.  His chemistry with Sneider and Perri is off the charts.

#6.  Simon Miller (Ups and Downs).  He is funny and entertaining as he is upping those downs about professional wrestling at What Culture.  Whether he is dressing like a detective or telling us how “Nobody Talks like That”, Simon Miller is one of the best things about this show.

Image result for dan murrell screen junkies#5.  Dan Murrell (Screen Junkies).  Dan is just one of the best people on the internet.  Whether he is doing his charting with Dan or fighting on Movie Fights or reviewing the latest movie, Dan Murrell brings an amount of class like few others.

#4.  Kevin Smith/Marc Bernardin (Fatman Beyond). These two have amazing chemistry and are perhaps the most engaging storytellers going today on YouTube (or anywhere).  I could sit and listen to Kevin and Marc just talk about the entertainment they like for hours.  Heck, I think I have.

Image result for rocha and knost#3.  John Rocha/Matt Knost (The Top 10 Show).  Again, cheating a bit since they are truly podcasters and not on YouTube, until just recently.  Still, I love the Top 10 and I respect these two men’s opinions like few others.  They are funny and those moments when they are at an impasse and have to flip the dread coin… well, not much could get better.

#2.  Kristian Harloff (SEN Live/Collider Live/Movie Trivia Schmoedown).  Kristian Harloff is everywhere.  I loved him on Collider Live, but I have not gotten into his new show as much yet.  He is great though and continues to be the driving force behind the epic Schmoedown.

Image result for roxy striar collider live#1.  Roxy Striar (Collider Live)  Hey Roxy.  I love Roxy.  She talks as if she gets a lot of hate in the comments, but I can’t imagine why.  She is so fantastic. She is funny and I appreciated how she tried to make sure that she understood what was being discussed.  She is an underrated interviewer as she has shown on Collider Live and, when Kristian departed, Roxy was given the reigns of Collider Live.  Well deserved I say.  I have loved her since the early days of TV Fights and I do my best, despite a busy schedule, t try and check in daily with Collider Live.  When Chris Jericho tweets that you are Batman, then you know you have made it.

Best of 2019 YouTube shows

Image result for youtube

The shows on YouTube have taken the place of a lot of the other type of TV shows.  There are only so many minutes in the day and the quality of the content of YouTube has been amazing.  I spend a ton of time on YouTube and the shows have been so engaging.

The Top 15 Shows on YouTube for 2019

#15.  Charting with Dan.  The Screen Junkies show on Fandom where Dan Murrell looks at the Box Office movies…even with the new Box Office Mojo causing trouble for him.

Image result for the matthews family youtube Lamar aka "L", Kaela Epic rap battles#14. The Matthews Family (TMG).  A YouTube channel where Lamar aka “L”, Kaela reacts to videos.  His Epic Rap Battle reactions are great.  When he stops the video to laugh, you can’t help but laugh with him.  HAYMAKER!!!!

#13.  Collider Movie Talk.  I haven’t watched this one as much.  It has been moved around the schedule some and has changed format throughout the year and I think that hurts this show.

#12.  The Reel Rejects.  A movie review show (among other things) featuring the Reel Rejects- Greg Alba & John Humphrey. They are smart and charming and do a great job with their banter and comments.

Image result for cinema wins endgame#11.  Everything Great-Cinema Wins.  Just found this with their “review” of Avengers: Endgame.  The host speaks about parts of a movie that were “wins” and keeps a running counter.  Loved the Endgame three part video.  Ran through a whole bunch of others as well.

#10.  Honest Trailers.  I have warmed up to this some, mainly because of the great people involved in it.  Love Dan Murrell, Spencer Gilbert, Lon Harris, Billy Business, and Joe Starr.  I wasn’t always liking the snarkiness involved, but I think this has improved.

#9.  Jeremy Jahns.  This is a bit of a cheat, since this is Jeremy Jahns posting videos on movie reviews and reactions.  Not as much of a show, but still one that I watch on a regular basis.  I actually find myself agreeing with Jeremy more than just about any other online reviewer.

Image result for SEN live#8.  SEN Live.  Kristian Harloff is off Collider.  He has started up his own show.  I love Kristian and enjoy the people he has on, but I just have not had the time to commit to watching his live show.  I have enjoyed when I have watched it though.

#7.  Collider FYC.  Stands for “For Your Consideration” and this is the Collider Oscar talk show.  It is hosted by Scott Mantz and that alone makes this great viewing, but when they add Perri Nemiroff and Jeff Sneider to the panel, this show is smart and opinionated.

Image result for simon miller ups and downs#6.  Ups and Downs.  A wrestling show from What Culture Wrestling that features Simon Miller reacting to Monday Night RAW, Friday Night Smackdown or different pay per views.  Simon Miller is entertaining as hell and brings a cool vibe to the show.

#5.  Movie Fights Live.  This has slipped a little because this year the show has stopped being weekly or live and has become a monthly (sort of) show.  Still one of the best formats on YouTube. #DankMemes

Image result for fatman beyond#4.  Fatman Beyond.  Kevin Smith and Marc Bernardin talking all things geek at the Scum and Villainy Cantina in California.  Usually a weekly show (depending on Kevin Smith’s busy schedule) Fatman Beyond has great audience involvement and benefits from two of the best story tellers in the world of entertainment today.

#3.  Top 10.  This kind of cheats again, because this is more of a podcast (and you’ll see it again when we talk podcasts).  However, it has just recently rejoined the Collider family and has been on camera so I think it qualifies.  I make sure to wake up early every Tuesday to listen to John Rocha and Matt Knost talk movies between their tangents.

#2.  Collider Live.  I was amazed how much I have enjoyed this show.  Even after Kristian Harloff was off the show, I just have enjoyed the talk and the comedy.  It is (almost) “the best show on the YouTubes” as Roxy Striar is fond of saying.  Between fart jokes, sound clips from Cody Hall (“Oh Good for you!”) and the news items, Collider Love is a show I try to check in with every day.

Image result for movie trivia schmoedown#1.  Movie Trivia Schmoedown.  This has become the best show on YouTube, by far.  It has grown this season, its “Magic” season thanks to some awesome storylines, amazing trivia competitors and some of the best personalities around.  Their big year end show, The Schmoedown Spectacular, comes this Saturday with five major matches and I cannot wait to see who will win.  An amazing amalgam of wrestling, movie trivia and creative characters, the Movie Trivia Schmoedown continues to be winning, compelling television no matter what outlet it is on.

EYG Top 100 Worst Movies of the Decade: #100-91

WorstMoviesDecade

#100-91

Here is the flip side.

These are, in my opinion, the worst films of the decade.  Again, it is only my opinion.  If your opinion differs from mine, more power to you.  You are welcome to love whatever you love.  Film is subjective and it is one of the best things about it.

In fact, looking at #100-91, there could be some controversial and divisive films among them.  Starting off with a bang, I guess.

Image result for elton john kingsman#100. Kingsman: The Golden Circle.  I really enjoyed the first Kingsman movie, but the second one went off the tracks for me.  Elton John was the only good thing for me.

#99.  Justice League.  #ReleasetheSnydercut.  Just kidding.  This film was so inconsistent.  Part with the Justice League were not terrible and the fight with Superman was cool, but one word messes this up… Steppenwolf.  I hated every last second this villain was on the screen.  He was way worse than Superman’s non-mustache.  This should have been one of the greatest epics of all time.  Instead, it was forgettable.

#98.  Chappie.  A police droid gains feelings.  As if this is something we have never seen before.  Chappie was such a disappointment after Neil Blomkamp’s District 9.

#97.  Ready Player One. How did this fail?  It was freaking Spielberg.  I guess that is what happens when you focus on the cameos in the background and forget the story.

Image result for scarlett johansson ghost in the shell#96.  Ghost in the Shell.  Scarlet Johansson had a great decade. This wasn’t one of them.  Her casting sent the geek world into a tizzy and the film wasn’t good enough to overcome.

#95.  The Mummy.  How about a movie that not only flopped, but totally destroyed an entire extended universe that was trying to get started?  The Mummy was so bad that the Dark Universe ceased to be.

Image result for Batman v Superman Martha#94.  Batman v. Superman.  Here you go.  Controversy!  MARTHA!  Another film that had no right to fail, but WB rushed it into existence before they should have.  Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck deserved better.

#93.  Amazing Spider-Man 2.  I tried to love this.  I pretended I did.  However, deep inside I knew this was horrendous.  Crammed too full, this film should have been two or three films.  Instead, they stuffed it too full.  Of course, this is one reason why Spidey wound up in the MCU so … there is that.

Image result for abraham lincoln vampire hunter#92.  Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.  I had read the book and it was great.  Tongue in cheek, satirical, clever.  Everything that this movie was not.  It was such a disappointment.

#91.  Fant4stic.  Josh Trank’s attempt at the FF that was meddled with by FOX to the point where it became unwatchable.  And once again, FOX failed with Dr. Doom.  How do you constantly screw up one of Marvel’s greatest villains ever?  The cast was strong, but everything else was just a joke.  Another property heading back to the MCU!

Conan: Serpent War #1

Writer: Jim Zub

Artist:  Scot Eaton

Cover Art:  Carlos Pacheco, Aneke & Frank D’Armata

I have to say that I just don’t think Marvel Comics has had any missteps with the character of Conan the Barbarian since they got his publishing rights back.  Both of his own series are great, I truly have enjoyed him with the Savage Avengers, his guest appearance in the Avengers: No Road Home storyline was epic and now he teams up with some of the most intriguing characters around for Conan: Serpent War.

Moon Knight being brought in is a hook for me.  Moon Knight has been one of the most underrated characters in Marvel Comics.  Throw in the characters of Dark Agnes and Solomon Kane and you have quite the team up.

Then, I think the art was very special.  It was the perfect feel for the story that was being told and the first few pages of the dream involving Niord was beautiful.

This first issue does a great job of setting up what we are doing and introducing us to the characters that will be our feature during this series.  It also provides us some ideas about what is going on without giving us too much.

Well written and fascinating, I think this could be yet another Conan book worth reading.  Jim Zub has been on fire the last few years and he has quickly become on of the writers that excites me as a reader.

OLD MAN QUILL #12 (OF 12)

Old Man Quill #12

Spirit in the Sky

Writer:  Ethan Sachs

Artist:  Robert Gill

Cover Art:  John Tyler Christopher

When Old Man Quill came out with their first issue, I had just finished Old Man Hawkeye, which I loved, but I was not going to continue on with these “Old Man” books from Marvel.  Peter Quill is fine, but I never found him to be that compelling of a character.

Twelve issues later, the series came to an end with a fantastic confrontation with Galactus and a cool nod to the character of Peter Quill and what his future holds.

Yes, I had no intentions of reading Old Man Quill, but it was consistently entertaining and well done. There were some surprises along the way that were actually surprises and the important moments all paid off.

I see that Marvel will, in January, be continuing this future world with the Avengers of the Wasteland coming out of the Dead Man Logan series.  Again, I am not interested, at this point. However, if the story is as well written, the art as well done as Old Man Quill, maybe I won’t be able to help myself.

Top 100 Movies of the Decade #100-91

Top100

100-91

Here is the list of the top 100 movies of the last decade, according to EYG.  If you disagree with my ranking, that is fine.  You are entitled to your own opinion.  Film is subjective and I will never criticize you for what you like (unless you like Movie 43, I mean…come on…).  This is my personal list and only that.

BY the way, I did not look at any star ratings for any of these movies.  Those ratings change over time as does my thoughts on certain movies.  Rewatchability is one of those keys to consider.  Some times the film I liked in the theater really becomes less in my mind as time passes.  If I redid this list in a year, it might be very different. So this is a list for December, 2019 and only then.

I will be posting these in a series of 10 in the thread 2019 Year in Review.  The Worst movies are coming soon too.

Starting off….

#100.  Megamind.  As I said, the ranking has already changed a bit since when I wrote it down on paper.  The previous #100 has moved up the list a little bit.  This is an animated movie that was a surprise.  Voiced by Will Ferrell.

#99. Kick Ass.  Based on a comic, this was the better of the two films involving Kick Ass.  Big Daddy (Nic Cage) and Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) are standouts.

Image result for fruitvale station#98.  Fruitville Station.  My first exposure to both Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler and it was amazingly powerful and emotional.

#97.  Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.  Some would probably have this one higher, but it comes into the finish at 97.  I enjoyed this, but that was about all. Chris Evans though.

#96.  The Jungle Book.  The live action film of the Jungle Book by Jon Favreau was a technical marvel and was full of energy and excitement.  Beautiful scenery that was not real.

#95.  Baby Driver.  Great film from Edgar Wright.  The soundtrack was out of this world. The acting was fantastic.  Original and fun.

Image result for Lego Batman movie#94.  Lego Batman Movie.  One of the best Batman movies of the decade.  Perhaps the best since the Dark Knight.  I know… strange. But it is one of the funniest movies of the decade.

#93.  Argo. Here was the film that started on my list at #100, but found itself moved up.  I enjoyed this Oscar winner and found it totally thrilling.

Image result for mad max fury road#92.  Mad Max: Fury Road.  Another one that a lot of people would have considerably higher (I bet some would call it #1) but I never thought it was that great.  It is certainly good, if not very good.  Charlize Theron is standout in the cast.

#91.  Saving Mr. Banks.  I have heard lots of criticism about this film because Walt Disney did not treat P.L. Travers well and practically stole Mary Poppins.  The real life story is not coming into this for me.  I loved the performances and the music was great.  Haters gonna hate.

Next:  #90-81

This will carry on through the whole month of December.

EYG Top 10 Famous Actors with Actor Parent(s)

EYG23

It is a new Top 10 list this week and it is an interesting twist. The Top 10 Famous Actors with Actor Parent(s).  There were way more than I thought as I scrolled through the long list of possibilities at IMDB.

Oh, I am also going to list the parents’ names and choose one film that I would consider my favorite of the oeuvre of that actor.

Image result for bill skarsgård it#10.  Bill Skarsgård,  (Stellan).  It.  Pennywise himself kicks off the list at number 10.  His father is Stellan Skarsgård, who appeared int he MCU.  Bill Skarsgård had huge shoes to fill when he took over for EYG Hall of Famer Tim Curry as Pennywise the Dancing Clown and he hit it out of the park.  Even though It Chapter II was not quite the awesome film that I hoped it would be, Bill was not the issue.  I am excited to see what else Bill has up his sleeve.

Image result for jamie lee curtis halloween#9.  Jamie Lee Curtis (Tony Curtis/Janet Leigh).  Halloween.  The original John Carpenter horror classic, Halloween saw the debut of the wonderful Jamie Lee Curtis. She has had a great career after this, and I almost considered Trading Places as the film that I liked best from her.  Her return in the new version of Halloween was probably the best part of that film.

Image result for emma thompson mr banks#8.  Emma Thompson (Eric Thompson/Phyllida Law). Saving Mr. Banks.  Emma Thompson as another actor whom I had some difficulty picking a favorite film because, no matter how the film may be, she is always great.  I wound up picking Saving Mr. Banks, a Disney movie where she played the original creator of Mary Poppins, P.L. Travers.

Image result for sean connery dr jones#7.  Sean Connery (Jason Connery).  Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.  He was James Bond.  He was Indiana Jones’ father.  He was Alan Quartermaine (okay, that one was not so great).  Sean Connery was always tremendous.  I picked his role as Dr. Henry Jones Sr. because I love that movie so much.  I considered The rock too, but Last Crusade just is one of my all time favorites.

Image result for josh brolin Thanos#6.  Josh Brolin (James Brolin) Avengers: Infinity War.  Thanos himself.  Josh Brolin has made me a fan of him with his performance as the Mad Titan.  And of course, Avengers: Infinity war was Thanos’s movie.  He was legitimately the protagonist of that movie… and he won!  Who would have ever guessed that they would allow that to end one of the largest in scale films the MCU had ever produced?  Brolin was amazing in the film and should have been considered for more awards than he was.

Image result for jeff bridges lebowski#5.  Jeff Bridges (Lloyd).  The Big Lebowski.  Jeff Bridges is one of the great actors of our time.  He has been in so many unbelievable movies and he is always fantastic in all of them.  I picked what was probably his most iconic role and one that I just saw for the first time this past year.  The Big Lebowski was great and Jeff Bridges was a special performer.

Image result for russell the thing#4.  Kurt Russell.  (Bing Russell).  The Thing.  Here was another actor that caused me to go to IMDB to look for exactly which of his long list of films would be my favorite.  And while my favorite of his may be Guardians Vol 2, I chose The Thing because of how iconic it is.  Another John Carpenter film that is just as brilliant now as it was back in 1982.

Image result for leia#3.  Carrie Fisher.  (Debbie Reynolds/Eddie Fisher) Star Wars.  Our Princess.  Leia herself is in at number three.  Carrie Fisher had a tough life but we all loved her so much because of this movie and this movie trilogy.  Leia developed over each one, whether it be her relationship with the scalawag, Han Solo or her learning of a long lost twin brother in Luke, Princess Leia never faltered.  Another EYG Hall of Famer, Carrie Fisher’s loss will definitely be felt in The Rise of Skywalker.

Related image#2.  Michael Douglas.  (Kirk Douglas).  War of the Roses.  Michael Douglas is always great.  I considered Ant Man in this role for his perfect portrayal of Hank Pym, but he is more of a secondary character there and in The War of the Roses, he plays a perfect jerk that both loves and hates his wife, Kathleen Turner.  This film showed both Douglas’s skill at drama, but also dark comedy.  His timing was perfect.

Image result for rdj tony stark endgame#1.  Robert Downey Jr. (Robert Downey Sr.).  Avengers: Endgame.  Thank you RDJ.  Without you, the MCU may never have been successful.  And then, you decided to tear our hearts out in Endgame with your final scene.  Few characters can be said to be cast to perfection, but Tony Stark is someone who I cannot imagine anyone else ever playing.  Always remember, Robert that we love you 3000.

Honorable mentions:  There were a bunch of them.  I almost put Kiefer Sutherland on the list from Stand By Me.  I found out that the one and only Dr. Strange Benedict Cumberbatch fit into this category.  Domhnall Gleeson is an actor who may see more of in the future.  Matthew Broderick was perfect as Ferris Bueller (and Matt put him on his own list because of Ferris).  Ben Stiller‘s Mister Furious had me considering him too.  I was not sure if his father Jerry was a movie star or more of a TV star.  I loved Laura Dern too, but I was not sure which film I would have chosen for her.  Another star of the future is John David Washington, son of Denzel and star of the great BlackKKlansman.

TV 2019

TV

We would be in a glorious time for television watching.  There are a ton of content on all kinds of services, cable, network, streaming, everywhere.  However, there is a drawback to this new age of gold.  There is just no way to watch it all.  Not and still have a life.

Because of that I have to say that my viewing habits have changed dramatically over the last few years.  At one point, I was trying to keep up with the shows, but I found that I just could not do it.  Now, I was a select few shows.  That might pick up as more Marvel shows come to Disney +, but as for now, the TV part of EYG has been down.

So I have condensed the section on television into this singular post.

I also saw a Tweet that criticized the writing of these type of “best of 2019” lists.  The writer of said Tweet claimed that you had to use the term “favorite” instead of “best” otherwise the list was not correct.  Well, I plan on calling my lists whatever I want.  It is my website.  I should hope everyone understands that these are my subjective opinions.  I welcome all opposing opinions.  That is what we do here at EYG.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)

I am about halfway through Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and I am not sure I will get through the rest.  This is way worse than I remember.

The goal, of course, is to watch the prequels in preparation for the final Episode of the Star Wars saga, The Rise of Skywalker, which opens on December 20th.

Still, this is tough.

There was more light saber use in the first 20 minutes of this movie than there was in the entire trilogy prior.  That is not a good thing.

Jar Jar Binks.  Ugh.  Just horrendous.

The dialogue?  Cringeworthy.  Actually, cringeworthy may be too kind of a description.

Poor little Jake Lloyd.  It really isn’t his fault.  He was doing his best, but Anakin Skywalker introduced in this manner was a huge mistake.  Of course, Jake was not the worst actor on the screen.  His mother was barely registering any emotion.  Jake did not deserve the amount of hate that he garnered for the role.

There are so many racist characters in this movie.  Completely unnecessary.

Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor could have done so much more than what they were given.  The villainous Darth Maul was wasted in the movei for, what was basically, one fight.  That fight with the Jedis was pretty decent, but there could have been so much more.

Oh, and these Jedis sure are quick to use violence to solve their problems.  I thought that was the quickest way to the Dark Side.  Maybe I misunderstood.

The inclusion of C3PO and R2D2 really felt awkward.  So C3PO was made by young Vader?  Hm, that sounds odd.

Midi-chlorians?  Quick way to take the power of the universe that surrounds us all and turn it into a weird blood virus.  To be fair, Star Wars realized that this was a huge mistake and kind of let these midi-chlorians fade away into the ether.

Hey, it is Greg Proops!  I knew that voice of the pod race announcer and, when I looked it up, I found the awesome Mr. Proops, one of the rotating regulars of Whose Line is it Anyway.  I have found a positive!

These movies miss that practical effect feel that the original trilogy had.  This is way too “clean” for what it should have been.  Too much green screen.  It makes these movies too artificial.

I had hoped to find something more than I remembered in this film, but, alas, there may be even less.

Other comics of the year

I have actually been expanding my reading beyond just Marvel this year, mainly because my comic shop people keep making me read these books that keep ending up great.  Here are my Top 7 Non-Marvel Comics of the Year.

#7.  Far Sector (DC Comics).  A new take on the Green Lantern character and a mystery all rolled into one.  There is a crime committed in a sector of space where there had not been a crime for centuries and we get a new GL to investigate.

#6.  Family Tree (Image).  This one just started and it is a very interesting first issue.  It is also one that I picked up on my own without any encouragement from Ben or Todd.

#5.  Undiscovered Country (Image).  This is another one that just started, which is why it is down this list.  Issue number one was completely engaging, creating a new world that is as interesting as any setting around.

#4.  Batman/Superman (DC Comics).  The Batman Who Laughs storyline has been invading this series and it has been epic.  I have enjoyed the interactions between Bats and Supes.

#3.  Sea of Stars (Image).  A father and son get separated in space and they must find their way back to each other. However, there is more going on than just that.  Well written by Jason Aaron, the space adventure has been very trippy.

Image result for something is killing the children#2.  Harleen (DC Black).  A new take on the origin of Harley Quinn, Harleen has been exceptional with each of the over sized issues.

#1.  Something is Killing the Children (Boom!).  This is just a tremendous book.  In fact, it is one of the first books I read when it is in my pull box.  The horror comic is filled with a mystery, monsters and some great dialogue.  The characters involved are compelling and fascinating and the story just flies along.  Brilliant work from James Tynion IV, Werther Dell’edera and Miquel Muerto.  Haunting images in each issue.

2019 Marvel Comics of the Year

While my pull list continued to get larger this year, I knew that I would have a bunch of Marvel Comics to buy.  There have been a bunch of mini-series this year and/or some books that were top notch but were cancelled.  This is my Top 20 Marvel books of 2019.

#20.  Champions.  All the young heroes of the Marvel Universe led by Ms. Marvel, Spider-man, Nova.  There may have been too many characters at times, but it was consistently solid.

#19.  Savage Avengers.  The first story arc was tremendous in the Savage Land, but it has been only adequate since.

#18.  The Amazing Mary Jane.  This one just started (2 issues out of 5), but the meta narrative here is great as MJ is making a movie with Mysterio.

Image result for meet the skrulls 1#17.  Meet the Skrulls.  A great mini-series early in the year featuring a family of Skrulls undercover on the earth.

#16.  Ms. Marvel.  Kamala Khan has some very intimate adventures as the first ever Muslim super hero continues to grow through her teen years.

#15.  Doctor Strange. The story arcs in Doctor Strange continued to be fascinating as this series came to an end after Stephen regained the use of his hands. There was a whole Galactus arc that was great too.

#14. The Black Cat.  The fun criminal escapades of Felicia Hardy is chronicled here and they do a wonderful job of creating the excitement.

#13.  Miles Morales: Spider-Man.  Miles has continued to grow over the years and he faced some serious issues this year that pushed him as Spider-man.

Image result for avengers comic 25 (2019)#12.  The Avengers.  The Avengers loaded its line up with some odd choices this year (Blade, Ghost Rider etc) but they work well together.  The issue after the War of the Realms with the hot tub was one of the best issues of the year.

#11. Agents of Atlas.  The one great thing to come out of the War of the Realms was this mini-series that moved into a continuing series.  It featured a whole bunch of new international characters such as Aero, Wave, Swordmaster as well as Amadeus Cho, Shang Chi and others.

#10.  Invaders.  This is a great story of the troubles between Captain America and Namor.  It started with some intriguing mysteries that may not have played out to its best conclusion.  Still, the relationship between Cap and Namor carried this series.

Image result for conan the barbarian comic#9.  Conan the Barbarian.  I never thought I would be buying Conan, but the series with Jason Aaron writing was just so dang good.  I do not think that Marvel has had a misstep yet with Conan since they regained his rights.

#8.  House of X/Powers of X.  This double mini-series redefined the X-Men franchise.  I did not love this as much as most of the world seemed to, but it was still a fascinating take on the X-Men from Jonathan Hickman that will make me look differently at these mutants from now on.

#7.  Amazing Spider-Man.  This was the year where everything seemed to get back on track.  Peter and Mary Jane got back together and everything was right again.

Image result for invisible women 5#6.  Invisible Woman.  A great five issue series starring Susan Richards as a spy.  Sue is shown in a new light while maintaining the character that we have known for all these years.

#5.  The Runaways.  This is the most consistently entertaining book on the list with some of the best writing around.  The Runaways have a great cast of characters, and Doombot is one of my favs.

Image result for daredevil#4.  Daredevil.  Chip Zdarsky has created a remarkable Daredevil story arc where you are never sure what is going to happen next. Matt Murdock is lost and he is trying to find his way back to who he was.  This has been gripping every issue.

Image result for loki 5#3.  Loki.  This was a painful cancellation.  The first five issues of this series were as good as comics could be.  Written by Daniel Kibblesmith, Loki was funny, intriguing and brilliant.  With it ending, I have not felt this bad about a comic going since Mockingbird.  Easily of the best comics of the year.

#2.  Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man.  Writer Tom Taylor must have a better understanding and grasp on Peter Parker than most writers because this is such a perfect rendition of the wall-crawler that has been written in years.

Image result for immortal hulk 25#1.  Immortal Hulk.  The best comic Marvel has put out in years. Al Ewing’s take on Bruce Banner and the Hulk is one for nightmares.  Even with the trippy issue 25, this book is amazing every month. When I finished reading the Immortal Hulk with my mouth would always seem to be agape with disbelief.  And that is the sign of a great story.

Honorable Mentions:  Absolute Carnage mini Series, Captain America, Tony Stark: Iron Man, Savage Sword of Conan, King Thor, Valkyrie, Web of Black Widow.
