EYG Top 10 SNL Cast Member Movies

EYG23

It is Tuesday and so the new Top 10 Show has come out.  This week, in honor of the release of Pete Davidson and The King of Staten Island, the guys decided on the Top 10 Saturday Night Live Cast Member Movies.  There were a ton of possible choices here and there were a ton of choices that I was not going to include on my list.  Honestly, a bunch of these films are not my favs.

There are some rules that I had to follow.  One, the SNL actor needed to be the lead of the movie, not a supporting character.  If someone is in an ensemble, then there needed to be more than one in the ensemble.  Matt and John tried to focus in on comedies, but I did not use that as a qualification.  I also maintained one film per person.

So…

Uncut Gems' Review: Adam Sandler's Punch-Drunk Hustle - The New ...#10.  Uncut Gems (Adam Sandler).  This is one that I never thought would make my list because so hate Adam Sandler movies, but this is perhaps his finest performance.  It is a non-comedic performance, and he truly is great.  He deserved an Oscar nomination for his work, but that was denied.  I’d love to see more like this from him instead of the horrendous comedies that he involves himself in.

We're The Millers - CINEMABLEND#9.  We’re the Millers (Jason Sudeikis).  This is one I wanted to include because it was such a surprise for me and I found it really funny.  Heading into the film, I was confident that I was going to hate this, but I laughed and enjoyed it to pieces.  It featured not only Jason Sudeikis in the cast, but also Jennifer Aniston.  They find themselves in some silly situations, but it has a good heart and is truly funny.

Mystery Men' Made Fun of Superheroes 20 Years Ago, Before ...#8.  Mystery Men (Ben Stiller).  Here is the first real ensemble cast on the list in the comic book adaptation Mystery Men.  Ben Stiller is the lead character, but Janeane Garofalo was also on SNL.  I love the super hero aspect of this team up movie.  Such bizarre heroes such as The Shoveler, The Bowler, Mr. Furious, and Blue Rajah are great and they blend together with such chemistry.  Casanova Frankenstein is an epic villain and the shocking fate of Captain Amazing is perfect.  Mystery Men is truly an underrated gem.

Shrek | fictional character | Britannica#7.  Shrek (Mike Myers).  One of two animated films on this list, Shrek is voiced by Mike Myers (and of course, Donkey is Eddie Murphy too so if you want to claim this is an ensemble, there is that).  I enjoy Shrek more than any of the Austin Powers movies.  This is a great story of an ogre finding his truly love in a princess that he goes to rescue simply because he wanted to get other fairy tale creatures off his land.  Shrek was not you typical hero, by any stretch, but the film is full of heart and humor and characters that would stand the test of time.  Shrek is like an onion.

Iron Man (2008) | BEHIND THE SCENES (part 1/4) - YouTube#6.  Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.).  I originally was going to use Avengers: Endgame in this spot, but I decided that Endgame was too much of an ensemble and that Iron Man worked extremely well as a choice.  This is the film that kicked off the MCU and really helped to punctuate Robert Downey Jr. return from the dark side.  He went through a lot of personal demons, but RDJ came out the other side with the role that he would play in ten MCU movies.  He was brilliant in Endgame, but one could argue that Endgame would never have happened without his work on Iron Man.

City Slickers' Review: 1991 Movie | Hollywood Reporter#5.  City Slickers (Billy Crystal).  I just recently rewatched this film and I remembered how much I really loved it.  Billy Crystal heads out to the West to drive cattle as a way to get over a mid-life crisis.  The film is so well written and the interactions between Crystal and his cast mates are the strength of the movie.  The dialogue here is top notch and the performances are surprisingly great.  Who knew you could get emotionally invested in a calf named Norman?

Louie Anderson Returns for Coming 2 America, Claims It'll Make $1 ...#4.  Coming to America (Eddie Murphy).  Another one that I debated about because I almost had this be Beverly Hills Cop, but I think this comedic performance from Eddie Murphy is his best work.  He plays several other characters besides his Prince Akeem.  There are lots of great jokes and Eddie seems to really understand the character.  Working with Arsenio Hall, Murphy shows chemistry in the pairing.  One of the best comedies of the late 1980s.

Inside Out (2015) - IMDb#3.  Inside Out (Amy Poehler, Bill Hader).  The Pixar animated classic is one of my favorite movies around and the voice work from Amy Poehler as the lead emotion Joy is wonderful.  Again, with the ensemble cast rule, I included Bill Hader as Fear.  Bobby Moynihan is actually a voice here too.  Inside Out is such a perfect movie and brings such pure emotion and heart.  The scenes with Bing Bong are some of the most heart-breaking scenes in any movie, let alone animated movies.  Amy Poehler brings the character of Joy to life as she battles to try and help Riley find her way through her childhood.

This Is Spinal Tap's $400 Million Lawsuit - Bloomberg#2.  This is Spinal Tap (Michael McKeon, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer).  Yes, all three members of Spinal Tap were regulars on SNL and this mockumentary from director Rob Reiner is one of the funniest movies ever.  The story of an aging heavy metal rock band from England making one last attempt at a tour of the States, telling the history of the band.  Remarkably quotable and fantastic music.  In fact, Spinal Tap put out a couple of records after the soundtrack and they even toured.  Spinal Tap played Wembley Stadium with Metallica.  That shows that they were not just a joke band.

Paul Feig confirms he'll make a female-led 'Ghostbusters' movie ...#1.  Ghostbusters (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd).  There is something strange, in your neighborhood… who ya gonna call?  Why Ghostbusters of course.  One of my all time favorite movies starring both Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd from SNL.  This is remarkably funny and includes a great action/sci-fi story to go with it.  Another absolutely great movie for quotations, Ghostbusters became an iconic film.  The chemistry and dialogue between the three main Ghostbusters (including Harold Ramis) carries a great deal of this movie.  Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis contributed to the film as well.  I will never forget that first moment of seeing the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man walking through New York City.  They have never reached this level of Ghostbusters since.

Honorary Mentions:  There were a bunch.  One of the SNL cast member who I do not like much is Will Farrell, but my favorite film of his was Stranger Than Fiction, which I considered.  I am not a fan of Anchorman at all.   Popstar with Adam Samberg is a film that too many people ignore and is really funny.  The Blues Brothers with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd was the final cut from the list and was dropped because I really wanted to include a couple others.  Fletch with Chevy Chase was a film that I have recently seen and enjoyed.  Wayne’s World and Wayne’s World 2 are both solid films.  I mentioned Beverly Hills Cop almost flipped places with Eddie Murphy‘s other film.  I considered Beetlejuice for Alec Baldwin, but he technically has not been a cast member.  He has only been a guest star to play Donald Trump.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

Amazon.com: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: Prints: Posters ...

Who are these guys?”

That was asked several times during the classic Western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, a film starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford as the titular characters.

Iconic outlaws Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and The Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) were leaders of the infamous Hole-in-the-Wall Gang in the Old West.  After a series of train robberies, a seemingly unstoppable posse, hired by the railroad president, comes after Butch and Sundance, chasing the outlaws across the land.  This leads them to flee to Bolivia with Sundance’s girlfriend Etta Place (Katharine Ross).

I really enjoyed this movie.  I am not sure I had seen it before, though I have seen some of the scenes involved here, in particular the iconic cliff jumping scene.  The relationship and banter between Paul Newman and Robert Redford was utterly fantastic and easily the best part of the movie.  They were so quick-witted and engaging that you fall immediately in love with them despite the fact that they were criminals.

The script was written by William Goldman, who would write the book and movie The Princess Bride, and you can see the similarities between the sharp dialogue and the connections between characters.  I laughed out loud several times as Butch and Sundance snipped at each other showing perfect comedic timing in a film that did not make me think would be funny.  Goldman earned an Academy Award for his writing on this project.

The music here is amazing as well.  The happy and bouncy “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head” works so well in a beautiful scene with Butch taking Etta around on a new-fangled bicycle.

Robert Redford and Paul Newman showed amazing chemistry with each other and totally make this movie work.  Everything depends on these two actors delivering the characters and their dialogue and they are just great.  I had a lot of fun with this movie, as it becomes one of my favorite Westerns around.

Ninjas on Bikes- Backlash 2020

The Street Profits & Viking Raiders brawl in parking lot: WWE ...

Surprise.

Prior to the start of the Backlash show, WWE announced that there would be a RAW Tag Team Championship match between the Street Profits and the Viking Raiders.  It was unexpected and felt last minute, but no one would expect what we wound up getting.

5 Ups And 7 Downs From WWE Backlash 2020 – Page 8The two teams have been having filmed vignettes competing against one another in “Anything you can do, we can do better” challenges.  Bowling. Sword fighting. Axe throwing and the such.  They were tied at 2 each and split events at their “Decathlon” last week on RAW so it made sense that they would break the tie with a championship match.

We should have seen it coming.

The match never happened as the segment turned into another cinematic presentation where the two teams fought each other in the back.  They destroyed Braun Strowman’s windshield again, attacked each other with the props from previous skits, speared each other through window glass and so on.

We had not seen anything yet.

WWE Backlash results: Street Profits vs. Viking Raiders in a ...As they were facing off, a group of motorcycles pulled up and WWE wrestler Akira Tozawa stepped up and pulled off his ninja mask.  It was ninjas on bikes.

The Street Profits and the Viking Raiders then decided to team up to take on the ninjas as the Viking Profits (there was a logo for the group too).  They battled the ninjas and knocked them all out (using the power of the turkey leg, which apparently, like Thor with Mjolnir, Ivar can summon by holding out his hand.

Identity of the giant ninja who appeared at WWE Backlash during ...Then, Tozawa unleashed the giant ninja who had a sword.  Eric wanted to take him on but wiser heads came through and they ran away.

They wound up on the top of a truck and started fighting once again.  They all fell into a dumpster and were attacked by a monster with a long tentacle, which was an allusion to the dianoga from Star Wars: A New Hope.

Holy cow.

The Viking Raiders, Street Profits Battle Each Other and Ninjas at ...Yes, this was ridiculous, but I laughed many times.  It breaks up the show and it gives these four talented men a chance to show off their comedic timing.  I liked the shots, I liked the music.  Was it stupid?  Of course.  Was it a good stupid?  I think so.  I liked this more than the last cinematic match between Adam Cole and Velveteen Dream on NXT Takeover: In You House.

Will these kind of bits get old?  Maybe.  It depends on how they use it and what they do with it.  It made sense to do this after the series of vignettes that these teams had done.

But come on….

Ninjas.

The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever- Backlash 2020

WWE Backlash 2020 - Full show results and video highlights

WWE Backlash happened on June 14th and the show was highly considered a mixed bag.  There were several weird finishes and just a completely insane cinematic “match” between the Street Profits and the Viking Raiders.  However, the main point I want to discuss today is the match between Randy Orton and Edge.

Yes, the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” as the WWE promoted, setting a bar that was invariably going to be impossible to reach.

Here was the problem, highlighted as such by my viewing of Twitter during the show.  The wrestling fans had approached this with such negativity that there was no way Edge-Orton was going to be considered in the argument.  The fans came into the match with a closed mind, and that was because they do not like WWE trying to tell them how to think.

Edge Suffered An Injury During BACKLASH Which Could Keep Him Out ...The fact is that this match was absolutely spectacular and should be in consideration for the Match of the Year at the end of 2020, but did it reach the status of “Greatest Ever?”  I don’t know, that is all subjective.  And because it is subjective, the fans had their opinions already made up.

There were also tons of “Greatest Ever” jokes on Twitter leading up to the match and they were really unfunny.  I saw several tweets about people hating on the match, which I find difficult to believe, since it was an amazing work.

Another load of anger came from Twitter about the crowd noise that was piped in and the camera shots that were experimented with.  It became just one more thing that the vast audience could snatch onto to fill their hate.  I was not bothered by either.  In fact, I appreciated the WWE trying something different to enhance the viewing experience of the match.  The crowd noise and the camera shots had some drawbacks, but overall I think it went well.

WWE Honors Howard Finkel During Edge vs. Randy Orton Match at ...The best part of the enhancements was the inclusion of the ring introduction from Howard Finkel, who passed away earlier this year.  The lights dimmed and there was an MSG microphone dangling in the ring and we heard a recorded intro for both wrestlers in Howard Finkel’s distinctive voice.  It was a truly wonderful honor for “The Fink” and gave the match that extra gravitas.

My own personal viewing of the match was hampered a bit by the news that had come out that Edge had injured himself during the match.  Reports of Edge tearing his tricep came out and distracted me as I was watching the match with an eye on seeing the moment when it happened.  If that news had not slipped out (the match was reportedly filmed on June 7th and the WWE has been keeping Edge’s injury under wraps since), I thin my own enjoyment of the match would have been elevated.  That is not the fault of the show or of the WWE, it just was one of those things.

I loved the story that these two told as the match moved on with the use of so many other moves as homages such as the Unprettier, The Pedigree, The Rock Bottom, The Three Amigos, The Olympic Slam.  It was as if they were including all of these other wrestlers in their “Greatest Match”.

Edge injured in Backlash 2020: this is known for nowIn the end, Randy Orton won with a low blow and then a Punt, a move we have not seen Randy use in years.  It was a dramatic finish to a match that went over 40 minutes and had two men work extremely hard.  The match started slowly (which people on Twitter also complained about) but built up to the ending very well.  And after the pinfall, Randy got down into Edge’s face and told him to go home to Beth and their children and for Edge to tell them that “Uncle Randy says hi.”

Great storytelling.  Great physicality.  Blood.  Drama.  Everything here says this was a 5 star match.  Plus, when was the last time the WWE so openly promoted that this was a WRESTLING match?  Not sports entertainment, but wrestling.  It has seemed as if the word wrestling is a dirty word to Vince McMahon and the head honchos, but there it was, front and center in the promotion for the match.  That has to be a positive thing.

Was the whole tagline hyperbole?  Of course it was.  Was it meant to just stir up the trolls?  I don’t think that was the sole reason, but I am sure the WWE saw that as a benefit of the tagline.  It was never going to live up to such a brazen claim, but it was most likely the best match that Edge and Orton could possibly put together.  I mean, remember, Edge has not had a proper wrestling match for over 9 years, let alone one that went 40+ minutes.  There would be plenty of active superstars who would be blown up way before the 40 minute mark.

I certainly hope Edge is not injured as badly as it sounds.  He carried on with the match and I never noticed where the injury happened, so you have to respect him for that.

The Neverending Story (1984)

Reach the stars, fly a fantasy
Dream a dream, and what you see will be-eh, yeah, yeah, yeah-eh
Rhymes that keep their secrets, will unfold behind the clouds
And there upon the rainbow is the answer to a Neverending story-eeh

The Neverending Story is a classic tale of fantasy and adventure, a beautiful family film that provides thrills, humor, deep themes and magic.

A young boy Bastian (Barret Oliver), who has recently lost his mother, is getting bullied by a group of kids.  One day on the way to school, Bastian ducks inside an old bookstore to avoid the bullies chasing him.  Inside, he meets an old man who shows him a book that is meant to be more than what it was.  Bastian sneaked away with the book and found a deserted building to read it.

In the story, he discovers a land called Fantasia that is slowly being taken over by the Nothing and the leaders of Fantasia has recruited a mighty warrior by the name of Atreyu (Noah Hathaway), who turns out to be a kid, and they send Atreyu on an adventure to save the Princess, who was dying from the Nothing.

This adventure becomes majorly meta for Bastian as he learns the importance of imagination and daydreams, something he has been told to stop doing.

The movie is truly wonderful.  Yes, visually, it looks like a 1980’s movie, but actually the practical effects involved here are part of the film’s charm.  The creatures and the sets are masterfully imagined and designed.  There is a realness to most of the movie that is sometimes missing in the big green screen epics of CGI today.

Barret Oliver does a really solid job as Bastian.  Some of his reactions as he reads through the book are well done.  Some may be over the top as well, but he is solid enough to keep the narrative going.

Noah Hathaway is a good looking young boy for the role of Atreyu.  He does get a little whiny at times with his voice. but I am guessing that he is directed to do so.  However, there is no denying… this kid had some magical hair.  One scene he turned from the camera and his hair flowed like the mane of a lion.  It was epic.

Then the film pulled out the tissues for us early on as Atreyu was trying to get his way through the Swamp of Sadness with his horse Artax.  You have to have a heart of stone to not be affected by this scene.  It came out of nowhere but it does a great job of setting up the difficulties that Atreyu would be facing while being a metaphor for depression and how dangerous it can be for individuals.

The Neverending Story was a beautiful story with all kinds of emotional beats in it.  The young actors do a decent job and deliver when they need to.  The tale is remarkably meta, although the ending when Bastian uses Falkor the Luck Dragon to get revenge on the bullies who had dumped him in the dumpster may not have been the most evolved message to give.

The Guest (2014)

Indie joint. (With images) | The guest 2014, Dan stevens, Be with ...

I was scrolling through Netflix to try and find a movie for tonight and I found something new on the streaming service from 2014 that featured Dan Stevens.  It was a movie called The Guest.  However, that had not sold me on watching the film as of that point.  Then I saw that the list of actors included Brendan Meyer, and I was in.

Brendan Meyer is an actor who also participates in the Movie Trivia Schmoedown as Brendan “The Kid” Meyer.  I liked the Kid a great deal and getting a chance to see him work in a movie was a great opportunity.

David (Dan Stevens) arrives at the house of the Petersons.  He tells Laura (Shelia Kelley) that he was a friend of her deceased son during their time in the military and that the last thing he had promised to her son was to look out for his family.

Laura’s other son Luke (Brendan Meyer) and her 20-year old daughter Anna (Maika Monroe) started to bond with David as he showed that he was capable and helpful.

However, David has a dark secret that threatens to put the entire family in jeopardy.

Dan Stevens does a very solid job as the machine-like soldier who never seemed to be out of control.  You could understand why, just by the way he carried himself, this family took him in so quickly.  He was clearly a skilled manipulator, finding specific way to endure himself to each member of the family.  Plus, he seemed to be going out of his way to make their lives better.

Little did they know there was a darkness inside him and that he could snap and turn on them all at any moment.  The film does a great job of playing that tone of uncertainty, always suspecting but never being totally sure what was going on.  In fact, there were chances that the story might flip on us and that what we were being led to think was not that way at all.

When the tables turned, it went violent very quickly, putting our protagonists in desperate situations.  There some moments of brutality that was tough to watch.

Now, David’s motivations did feel muddy.  I was not sure I understood in the end why he wound up in this place and what his true motivations were.  I understand why things happened the way they did, but I am not sure what brought him here in the first place.

The film moves briskly and gives you some good thrills and some exciting moments.  The performances are decent and there was an appearance by Abaddon from LOST (Lance Reddick) too as Major Carver.

This is a fine watch on a Saturday night if you’ve got nothing else to do.

Network(1976)

Amazon.com: Movie Posters Network - 11 x 17: Prints: Posters & Prints

Maybe the news networks should take a closer look at this film.

Network was the story of an aging anchor Howard Beale (Peter Finch) whose ratings had slipped and was going to be fired until he flipped out live on television.  The ratings for his diatribe soared and he became a network standby.

This is still completely relevant in today’s world, especially in the world of 24-hour news networks as we have now.  The ratings are the most important factor.  The networks spend more time with the darkness than in the light.  They try to get viewers to believe/do certain things, mainly to keep tuning in.

Network is full of amazing performances including Oscar winner Finch (who became the first winner to receive an Oscar posthumously).  Faye Dunaway and Beatrice Straight also won Academy Awards for their performances.  William Holden and Ned Beatty were nominated for Oscars.

Directed by the iconic Sidney Lumet, Network won for writing as well.  Everything was brought together in the perfect package at the right time.  The United States had just gone through Watergate and the desire of the public was ripe to respond to such work.

The movie was a satire on the media and the influence of ratings.  It provided some ridiculous situations to show how responses could be just a bad.

News networks such as FOX News, MSNBC etc can easily be seen and recognized in the fictional UBS network in Network.  It makes one wonder why we have not come fartehr.

The King of Staten Island

The King of Staten Island Movie Poster - IMP Awards

Judd Apatow has released his latest movie on demand this weekend and it is very much a Judd Apatow movie.

Apatow has had a bunch of movies in his career that I would consider to be similar to The King of Staten Island.  Films such as This is 40, Trainwreck, Funny People, Knocked Up appear in his oeuvre.  They tend to be heavily reliant on dialogue, focus on characters over plot and tend to be fairly long.

I think those descriptors work well to describe The King of Staten Island.  The film starred Pete Davidson as Scott, a 24-year old high school dropout who lives with his mother Margie (Marisa Tomei) and smokes weed.  He wants to be a tattoo artist and practices on his friend, but he has not been very good at it.

Scott’s father was a fireman who died in the line of duty when Scott was seven years old and this loss affected him dramatically.  So when his mother starts dating another fireman Ray (Bill Burr), Scott does not respond well.

The performances are all very solid in the film, which, of course, is desperately important for a film like this one.  Pete Davidson gives his second strong performance in a film this year, the first being Big Time Adolescence on Hulu.  Davidson has shown some range here as the material hinges on the character.

Davidson has to dive into the complicated history of his father and how his relationship with his mother and his sister (Maude Apatow) were affected from his father’s death.  The film looks into the choices made by Scott as well.  He did things that made him a serious pain in the butt, but everybody seemed to understand why he did it.  He was not the most likable character ever, but the charming portrayal made it easier to support him.

Bill Burr was excellent too.  This is another character who you are never quite sure of and who showed you several of his figurative warts.  Yet, as the film progresses, Ray gives us reasons why he was more than what you first see.

Yes, there is not that much of a plot involved in the movie.  It was more like a series of events strung together in a larger narrative.  Still, the style does work for this type of film.  It may have been a tad over long and could have used a shorter run time, but the time is taken to really show the audience whom these characters were.

The King of Staten Island is a strong film that leans more toward the drama than you might expect.  There are funny moments, but they are more like the situational humor than anything else. It is a little long, but you don’t realize that for much of the film.  Pete Davidson shows his charisma here and exceeds the expectations.

Da 5 Bloods

Rotten Tomatoes on Twitter: "Spike Lee has announced his latest ...

I’m not sure there could have been a more effective or relevant movie to be dropped on Netflix today than Spike Lee’s next film, Da 5 Bloods.

Beautiful.  Painful.  Poignant.  Shocking.  Pertinent.

Four African-American Vietnam veterans, Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis), and Melvin (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.), returned to Vietnam in search of gold that they had buried during the war and for the remains of their friend and squad leader Norman (Chadwick Boseman) who had died during the war.

The years since returning from ‘Nam was difficult on the men and this movie takes its time to show us their struggles and challenges.  In particular, the film dives into the pain of Paul who had trouble leaving the pain of the war behind him.  Ghosts of the past had colored his perception of the world and drove him to deep anger.

Delroy Lindo’s performance is brilliant.  He shows every last bit of anger and frustration from the past and how it has turned him into the man that he is now.  His relationship with his son Davis (Jonathan Majors) was complex and complicated.  It felt real.  It was the challenges that someone may face who was struggling with mental illness brought on from PTSD or deep seeded trauma.

Spike Lee does a tremendous job of interweaving black history into the story, with allusions to major black events and human figures from the years.  Showing the distinct contributions made from the African-American culture to the history of America made the struggles of these men even more significant.

Violence is not hidden.  This is every bit a war film, though it deals with messages that transcends the gunfire and the explosions.  There are moments that are completely shocking and caught me off-guard.  Da 5 Bloods masterfully portrays the feeling of chaos that comes from war.  It also deals with the brotherhood of comrades and what might shatter that connection whether it be betrayal or death or greed.

Da 5 Bloods feels as if the film was made after the events of the nation over the last few weeks, even though I know that cannot be possible.  Spike Lee created a film that totally capsulizes the passion of a movement.  Black lives do matter and the power of that statement is not lost in this film.

Truly a masterful outing from everyone involved.  It is a tough watch, but one that is extremely important.

The Plague Nerdalogues

The Plague Nerdalogues" Are EXACTLY What We Need Right Now

I have been a fan of the podcast Fatman Beyond for awhile now.  I love listening to Kevin Smith tell a story and comment on the pieces of pop culture that I embrace.  However, that podcast is more than just Kevin Smith regaling us with his wit and stories.  His co-host may be the heart of the show.

Marc Bernardin has been a writer for Entertainment Weekly, the LA Times and many television programs.  His voice on Fatman Beyond is one of intelligence and passion, mixed with a vast realism of the world at large.  He both balances discussions with Smith and enriches them at the same time.  During Smith’s tour with his latest movie Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Bernardin took over the podcast, altered the title to Blackman Beyond, and did not miss a step.

With COVID-19 ravaging the country and quarantine driving some to drastic action, Marc Bernardin decided that he would find the positive direction that would help the world.

Contacting some of the top genre actors in the business, Marc organized a new web site called The Plague Nerdalogues.  Famous people recreating famous monologues from the greatest “nerd” cinema of all time on video.  By requesting a one-time donation of whatever you can afford, you have access to the list of videos.

Now the second wave of videos are hitting.  The first group of videos raised money for No Kid Hungry, a national campaign run by Share Our Strength to focus on child hunger and poverty in the world.  The second wave is raising money for the Black Lives Matter charity.

ImageThe videos, which include both the waves, are found on the website, http://theplaguenerdalogues.com.  Just some of the celebrities involved include Kevin Smith, Jorge Garcia, Jonathan Frakes, Grant Gustin, Will Forte, Phil LaMarr, Alan Smyth, Gary Anthony Williams etc.  They are performing monologues from movies & TV such as Game of Thrones, Star Trek, Avengers: Endgame, V for Vendetta, The Silence of the Lambs, etc.

Will Forte as Bryan Mills from Taken was unlike anything I expected.  As a huge LOST fan, I loved Jorge Garcia as Caesar from Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.  There is a monologue from the Batman 1966 movie is hilarious.  I have not had a chance to watch everything available, but these look just tremendous.

Marc Bernardin should be commended for his efforts to make something that can help the situation of the world during this time of uncertainty.

Artemis Fowl

Amazon.com : ARTEMIS FOWL MOVIE POSTER 2 Sided ORIGINAL INTL ...

Artemis Fowl has been scheduled for theatrical release for while now.  It got pushed back once because of the competition and then a second time because of COVID-19, eventually finding its way onto Disney +.  I have been anticipating the release of the film for some time because I like the idea and I felt as if the trailers looked better than most people claimed.  There was negativity surrounding Artemis Fowl, but I was still excited to see it.

Do you know that old phrase, “Be careful what you wish for?”

Based on the young adult book series by Eoin Colfer, this was one of the biggest misfires in many years.  Artemis Fowl is like if Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings combined, but without any sense or any form of magic.

Having said that, I did not hate watching this.  I did not find myself wishing that this was over.  I actually had a decent time watching the movie.  It reminds me of staring at the car crash.  You know you shouldn’t do it, but you can’t help yourself.

Artemis Fowl (Ferdia Shaw) is the namesake of his infamous father (Colin Farrell), a well-known master thief.  His father has been kidnapped by the villain with a flashlight who contacts young Artemis and demands a trade… his father for The Aculos, this film’s MacGuffin that has some kind of magical power of the Fairies world.

Oh, did I forget to mention that there were fairies?  Yes, they, along with goblins, trolls and dwarves, live in an underground world inside the earth.  Holly Short (Lara McDonnell) was one of the fairy patrol (or whatever they were called… it is called the LEPRecon)) and her father was supposedly a traitor and involved in stealing the Aculos.  She gets deeply involved despite a penchant for not following the rules.

Then we meet Commander Root (Judi Dench).  What can I say about Commander Root?  I love Judi Dench, but good lord.  The last time we saw Judi, she was dressed as a giant cat named Old Deuteronomy in the bizarre musical Cats.  Now she is a high ranking leader of the LEPRecons, dressed in green with pointy Spock ears, and a gravelly voice.  Ironically, she is an Academy Award winner.

There is also a dwarf named Mulch Diggums (Josh Gad) who we meet immediately as he is used as the narrator for parts of the movie.  When we see him narrating, he has been arrested by someone and he is, for some reason, in black and white.  Mulch is a thief/pickpocket and is apparently a giant dwarf.  Picture Hagrid but smaller and with less charm.  Oh, and a gravelly voice too.

Domovoi Butler (Nonso Anozie) is the Fowl’s manservant/butler, but apparently, as the film tells us, you should never call him that.  Why?  We never find out, nor do we see it happen.  When something like that is dropped, usually that sets up a scene where that very thing happens.  Nope.  Not here.  He brings in is little sister Juliet (Tamara Smart) who really does nothing but blend into the scenery.

I will say that this movie flew by.  Perhaps that is because they shoved so much into the first half of the movie, it never gave you a chance to be bored.  In fact, I had paused the film at one point and saw that it was over half done, which shocked me.  This 90 minute film probably should have been something like 3 or 4 episodes of television to properly introduce everything that it did in the first 45 minutes.

So many things happen that make no sense whatsoever.  Artemis has his crew capture Holly and he locks her up in a cage in Fowl Manor.  They interact, all negatively, until Artemis needs her help.  He asks her “Do you trust me?” and I am like….why would she?  The entire scope of this relationship is antagonistic.  If I remember correctly, she had threatened to kill him once. But now that the plot needs them to be friends, they are seemingly tight as thieves.

There is a plot thread of a crooked, power hungry member of the LEPRecons, but that is neither developed or returned to in the film.  It is just completely dropped.

Artemis Fowl cost $125 million dollars to make, but it is difficult to find where that money may have gone.  There are some moments of CGI that are as bad as we’ve seen in years.  In fact, there are times when you may think you are watching an old 1980/1990 film.

As I said, this is easily one of the worst movies of the year, but I did get a strange satisfaction from watching it.  This could fall into the category of so bad it is good, but that might be too good for it.  I was entertained by the train wreck though.  I laughed a few times and stared at amazement that anyone green lit this.  Kenneth Branagh directed it, which is a shocking fact.

The Lost Boys (1987)

Amazon.com: Poster The Lost Boys (1987) Movie 24x36: Posters & Prints

Here is the next classic 1980’s hit movie that was missing on my list.  I had never seen The Lost Boys before, although I knew that it featured Kiefer Sutherland and involved vampires.  I had added it to my list to watch this summer and I was looking forward to it.

Then, I watched it.  I have to say, I was pretty disappointed with what I saw.

I never expected to dislike this movie, so I am shocked at the result.  The Lost Boys, directed by Joel Schumacher (which should have given me a hint) and produced by Richard Donner had a cast of several of the 80’s teen idols.  Not only Kiefer but also Corey Feldman (who I enjoyed in The Goonies and Stand By Me), Corey Haim, Bill (of Bill & Ted) himself Alex Winter, Jami Gertz and Jason Patric.  It had roles as well for Dianne Wiest, Edward Herrmann and Bernard Hughes.

So the cast was solid.  What was the problem?

The film was a mixture of horror and comedy.  Those kind of films work well, if done properly.  Our main heroes are young kids fighting against the monstrous odds, which I historically enjoy (Monster Squad).

Even our main protagonist, Sam (Corey Haim), went into a comic book shop and knew his material.  Another point that should have made it special for me.

So what happened?

I just did not feel as if the two tones worked together in this movie.  The two Coreys felt out of place in the movie and, perhaps, miscast.  I found nothing original here.  It was a bare bones story.  The ending came out of nowhere, and yet was painfully apparent.  Our heroes felt very incompetent, yet they handled themselves really well.  And Michael (Jason Patric) was just endlessly irritating.  Haim was just screaming all the time and there were so many tropes of the genre.

I was very disappointed with this movie.  If there were ever one that was set up for me to love, this was the one.  I did not find it funny.  The scary parts were underwhelming and it felt as if actors were cast in the wrong roles.

Blah Blah.

The Night Clerk

The Night Clerk (DVD) – 101 Films Store

There is a great cast in this movie.  Makes you wonder why the movie itself is such a boring sludge.

Tye Sheridan stars as Bart, a night clerk at a motel, who is a high performing individual on the Autism Spectrum and a tech wizard.  Bart uses his tech savvy to set up cameras to watch the guests in order to “study” humans.  When a guest is murdered, police Detective Espada (John Leguizamo) believes that Bart had a hand in it.  Meanwhile, a new guest, Andrea (Ana de Armas) shows up and develops a bond with Bart.

Not much makes sense here and the film appears to be at cross purposes.  Is it a sweet love story or a brutal murder mystery?  Or is it a story of a plucky underdog overcoming the odds to find love or is it a sexual deviant unable to form a true bond with anyone?

Meanwhile… what the hell is wrong with the cop?  His line of questioning is so dumb and nonsensical that the entire story arc of the death is unreasonable and stupid.  I hate it when supposedly intelligent people do such idiotic things.

Ana de Armas, who was absolutely wonderful in Knives Out, is nowhere near as transcendent here as she was in that film.  She felt miscast in this role, not taking advantage of her natural charisma and her easiness of performance.  This movie does not take advantage of her natural skills.

It is an unsatisfying film with a great cast that does not get to really sink their teeth into anything worthy of their talents.  Tye Sheridan is fine.  Helen Hunt, as Bart’s mother, gets a couple of scenes of enabling.  John Leguizamo is given a character far below him.  Ana de Armas makes no sense and does not take advantage of her “it” factor.

The best part of the movie is that is is only around 90 minutes.

Writer:  Matt Fraction

Artist:  Terry Dodson

Cover Art:  Terry and Rachel Dotson

Adventureman is a new series debuting today from Image Comics, written Matt Fraction and drawn by Terry Dotson.

I grabbed this book off the shelf because I did like the look of the cover and I have been enjoying more of the non-Marvel books lately.  The cover had that old-timey feel to it and as soon as I opened it up, you could tell that tone was purposeful.

The first part of the comic focused on an adventure set in the past with a group of heroes led by the heroic Adventureman.  It had a distinct pulp feel to the story and quickly set up some interesting characters with a basic background.  They were flying through the action and then, suddenly, things changed.

Now, we arrive in a different situation and we find the family that we will be following for the remainder of the issue.  There is a neat twist with the first part of the story and the rest of the book is spent introducing us to and developing our main protagonist, Claire.

Claire has lost her hearing and uses hearing aids to help her out.  We meet her son and the rest of her family in a chaotic family dinner.  Then, the plot drops a little unexpected MacGuffin in her lap.

The art is perfect for the tone of the book and really grabs the reader.  There are some wonderfully creepy panels included as well.

It is also a very large issue without advertisements inside.  It is also still priced at 3.99.  If one of the big two had a book this thick, it would certainly fall into the 8-10 dollar area.  This is certainly a bargain for comics today.

I enjoyed this issue quite a bit.  It gave me that pulp feel and set up a cool mysterious world that you are not sure what might happen next.  Attractive pages and well written story.

MTS Star Wars Tournament

This post will have SPOILERS for the matches held today on Twitch between Scrimshaw/Dimalanta and Damon/Witt.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….

The Movie Trivia Schmoedown has found a way to provide content to its fans during this time of isolation and social distancing, and it takes place on the site called Twitch.

On Wednesdays, the MTS has arrived on Twitch to host matches from the Star Wars tournament, where 8 competitors are striving for the chance to challenge the reigning Star Wars Champions, the seemingly unbeatable Alex “The Demon” Damon.

I am going to be honest with you.  I have hoped that the powers that be in the Movie Trivia Schmoedown would have taken the Star Wars Division and closed it down.  I had never felt that it was worth having a whole division over Star Wars.  There were several reasons.  One, there were not very many competitors.  You would have three or maybe four that were real challengers.  Two, the champion, now Damon, and before him Sam Witwer, were so unbeatable that there was no one who could legitimately challenge them.  Three, the division did not have very many matches.  In fact, you might get two or three Star Wars matches a year.  Four, the questions are such deep cuts that it is practically impossible to play along, one of the fun aspects of the show.

However, with this current tournament, my opinion has changed, big time.

The use of the tournament helped provide matches for the division.  While the questions are still insanely difficult for me to answer, this tournament has eight challengers in it (nine if you count the play-in game) and these challengers are all just really strong.  Honestly, I could see several of them give the champion are real battle.  In fact, I legitimately think there are 5-6 players here that are outstanding and whom I could see as championship material.

And since we have been able to see the players more (whether it be in the game or in the promos leading up to the matches), we are able to see more of their personalities, giving us more chance to root for them.

StarWars1Yes, I did not know very many answers today during the double header on Twitch, but it was amazing and thrilling the entire time.  The match between Joseph Scrimshaw and Andrew Dimalanta was unbelievable, with both men having perfect games and having the match decided in sudden death.  Unfortunately, the final question was decided by a challenge and Andrew Dimalanta won 32-31.  Even that question, one could argue that Joseph Scrimshaw’s answer was correct, just not correct enough.

That is why this division has become suddenly so strong.  These are amazing performers who are answering questions that you just should not know and it depends on a level of specificity if you intend on advancing.  The Dimalanta/Scrimshaw match was one for the ages and one of the best matches of the season.  All of the other competitors in this tournament had to be happy that these two had to play one another in the first round because they certainly played a match that could have been in the finals.

Molly Damon, the wife of the current champion, was in the second match against Movie Guy Adam Witt.  While this match was not one as precise as the first one was, this was an extremely contentious contest.  Within the first round, there were three challenges thrown down, which is a remarkable number for the first round and you could see that some involved were a tad shaken.  Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis, the hosts of the match, were clearly bothered.  It took incredible composure to get through the round.

Molly Damon nailed her 5 point question at the end to finish off the match 24-19.  The answer she had was really tough and it was impressive that she pulled it.  She showed some great composure to make it through this challenging match and Adam Witt looked very strong in defeat.

Next week, we get to see “The Pit Boss” Ken Napzok, author of a Star Wars book, take on “Ace” Cabrera.  Ken had dropped perhaps one of the greatest promos in Schmoedown history prior to the beginning of this tournament.

So, Star Wars Trivia on Twitch.  It has been amazing so far and it sure looks like the best is yet to come.
