EYG Top 10 TV Actors Turned Movie Stars

EYG23

This week’s Top 10 list is an original topic that has a TON of possible choices.  The topic is the Top 10 TV Actors Turned Movie Stars.  I sat down and started making my list and I just ripped off nearly 20 actors.  I had to reorder #3-10 a couple of times.

I was a huge TV guy before I started watching as many films as I did, even though it has flipped since.  Some of my choices may not be as big of stars today, but they were huge in their time.

In order to be considered a TV actor, the actor needed to be a regular on a show.  Guest starring appearances will not be considered.  And it does say Movie STARS.

Image result for michael j fox mcfly#10.  Michael J. Fox.  Michael does not do much any more because of his health situation, but it cannot be denied that he was one of the biggest stars of all time thanks to his Back to the Future trilogy.  Coming from Family Ties, Fox exploded into the past with Doc Brown.  Fox had other fun movies but none ever struck the same cord as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, considered by some to be a perfect movie.

Image result for hemsworth thor#9.  Chris Hemsworth.  This might be a bit of a cheat, but I wanted to include Hemsworth.  He appeared on the Australian soap opera Home & Away before coming to the states and becoming our God of Thunder, Thor in the MCU.  Hemsworth actually started in Cabin in the Woods, but delays caused that film to come out after Thor.  Hemsworth has shown his overall skills as Thor, both comedic and serious.  He has not yet found that second major film franchise, but what else do you need?

Image result for travolta pulp ficiton#8.  John Travolta.  Starting off on Welcome Back Kotter as Vinnie Barbarino, John Travolta has been in some of the best movies of the last thirty years.  Pulp Fiction, Michael, Phenomenon, Saturday Night Fever, Grease, The General’s Daughter, Primary Colors, Get Shorty, and Look Who’s Talking.  Unfortunately for John, he has been in some of the worst of the decade too.  Still, he is charming and always engaging and deserved of a spot on this list.

Image result for eddie murphy beverly hills cop#7.  Eddie Murphy.  One of the only actors on this list from SNL, Eddie Murphy was one of the biggest stars ever for a stretch of time.  48 Hours, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America were just a few of his early string of massive hits.  Murphy went away for awhile, but he returned this past year with a vengeance in Dolemite is my Name.

Image result for ryan reynolds deadpool#6.  Ryan Reynolds.  Appearing on Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place, Reynolds became a huge star in the movies.  His ultimate claim to fame in this space was his work as Wade Wilson, Deadpool.  Deadpool does not get made without Ryan Reynolds’ dedication and perseverance.  Reynolds was the perfect actor to bring the Merc with a Mouth to the big screen and I truly hope they find a way to bring both Deadpool and Reynolds into the MCU.

Image result for denzel washingotn]#5.  Denzel Washington.  I never watched St. Elsewhere, but I have huge respect for Denzel from the movies.  He is one of the best actors of our generation and never fails to be at his very best.  Even if the movie is subpar, Denzel is giving it his all and is always the best part of the film.  Remember the Titans, Inside Man, Crimson Tide, Philadelphia, Malcolm X, Unstoppable, Flight, Fences, The Bone Collector would be just some of his classics.

Image result for will smith#4.  Will Smith.  Will Smith, the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, has maybe not had as many huge hits as some of the others on this list, but he is one of the most likable actors around.  And it is not as if he has not had his share of awesome films such as Independence Day, Enemy of the State, Aladdin, Men in Black, Bad Boys for Life, Ali, Concussion, Hancock, I Am Legend, The Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds, and Spies in Disguise.  Again, sure he has had his stinkers, but Will Smith is such a star that you still love him despite After Earth or Gemini Man.

Image result for tom hanks#3.  Tom Hanks.  I loved Bosom Buddies.  I was excited to see Tom Hanks make the move to the big screen.  He had several low level films to start, but Big made Hanks a superstar.  Now, there are few actors in Hollywood today more respected than Hanks.  He is another actor who you know will bring his best no matter what the film is.  Two-time Academy Award winner, Hanks has played real life Captain Phillips, Fred Rogers, Walt Disney and Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger.  From Forrest Gump to Woody to Jim Lovell, Hanks has created iconic characters in all kinds of different films.  Hanks was the number one actor on the Top Ten list, but I do have two that are more conencted to me than he is.

Image result for moonlighting willis#2. Bruce Willis.  Bruce Willis was on one of my all-time favorite TV show, Moonlighting.  I was obsessed with Moonlighting, desperate to see it each week when it would come out.  Then, he starred in one of my all-time favorite movies, Die Hard.  Those two projects alone would secure him a spot on this list for me.  However, Willis has had a ton of other great movies too including The Sixth Sense, Pulp Fiction, Sin City, Unbreakable, Glass, Bandits, The Fifth Element, 12 Monkeys, and Looper.  Sure, Bruce has a reputation for phoning in a performance if he is not interested and he may be difficult to work with, but he will always be David Addison and John McClane for me and that is enough.

Image result for robin williams#1. Robin Williams.  “I am Mork from Ork, nanoo, nanoo.”  Mork from Ork appeared first on Happy Days and then was spun off into his own show, Mork and Mindy.  I absolutely loved Robin Williams.  Mork and Mindy was one of my favorite shows and would still be in my top 10 TV shows list.  The energy of Robin Williams exploded off the screen.  It was clear that the small screen would not be able to handle him.  Robin Williams may have had his share of clunkers as well, but he was such a beloved figure and he was so hectically funny that you always came back for more.  From Good Morning Vietnam to Mrs. Doubtfire, from his villainous turn in One Hour Photo and Insomnia, from his dramatic work in Good Will Hunting, and his iconic voice-over work as the Genie in Aladdin, Robin Williams was an unbelievable performer and actor with an unexpected range of talent.  His death hit me harder than any celebrity death I can recall.

Honorable Mentions:  There are a bunch.  Johnny Depp made the original version of my list at ten, but he got bumped in the final copy.  Morgan Freeman has been in so many classic films.  Leonardo DiCaprio is an amazing actor, but I am not a huge fan.  Melissa McCarthy was under consideration.  Bill Murray was another one that made the original list only to be bumped in the end.  Clint Eastwood had a great career in movies, both as an actor and a director. George Clooney was huge on ER and only went bigger after leaving.  John Goodman on Roseanne was one of the best characters on TV but he never became a leading star.  He was always excellent though.  Jim Carrey is another one whom I like but do not love.

Contagion (2011)

Image result for contagion movie poster

This one is much more frightening than Outbreak because Contagion feels much more possible, more realistic.

From the moment early in the film where Gwyneth Paltrow falls to the floor in a seizure, Contagion felt like a true world tale of a deadly virus spreading across the planet, truly showing how susceptible the human race could be to such an event.

This movie shows the insane reaction that people who are encased in fear can exhibit.  The images of people fighting over toilet paper in the aisles of grocery stores are burned into our collective minds and many find it unimaginable to react in such a barbaric way.  Still, fear causes such a potent and powerful reaction that some are blinded to anything but survival.

This movie also shows the lower forms of life than those just hoping to do what they can to survive another day.  The exploitation of the virus for monetary gains is a disgusting results yet these vultures seem to come out every time there is a problem in the world.  We see this on display in Contagion as well.

But there are positives here as well.  Stories of the heroes who sacrificed to attempt to save as many people as possible. Or the people who had to continue their lives after the horrendous loss involved.

Matt Damon’s character, Mitch Emhoff, showed the humanity of the situation as he struggled to get through after his wife (Paltrow) and son (Griffin Kane) became some of the first victims of the virus.  Mitch’s life became trying to save his remaining daughter (Anna Jacoby-Heron).

Laurence Fishburne led a remarkable cast of actors that were in search of the cure for this virus.  He had to suffer during the movie to be one of the people at the heart of the situation.  Jude Law, John Hawkes, Marian Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Elliot Gould, Bryan Cranston, Tien You Chui, and Enrico Colantoni are among the powerhouse cast on display here.

Honestly, I did see this film in the theater, but tonight, on my second watch, I do not remember much about it after the death of Paltrow in the opening ten minutes.  It can be disturbing and it can be unnerving, but it also has hope and it has a joy for life.

Of course, it ends with that final jab that tells you everything is not over… like any great horror movie.  Contagion is a well created movie with a message for us in the world today.  It always could be worse.

Outbreak (1995)

Image result for outbreak poster

What better time to watch Outbreak than when the world is going crazy over the Coronavirus?

This Dustin Hoffman film is not as realistic as another film that I will be watching after this, but I have always enjoyed it nonetheless.

A deadly virus that occurred in Africa and a smuggled monkey host is brought to California, causing an outbreak in a small town called Cedar Creek.  As the CDC and the army tried to contain the virus, a certain part of the army looked to bury the news.

Dustin Hoffman played Colonel Sam Daniels, a rebellious military doctor, who is an expert in viral infections and contagious diseases, gets involved and leads the squad in the attempt to figure out what has happened.  His ex-wife, Rene Russo, is at the CDC and comes around to the outbreak too.

However, General McClintock (Donald Sutherland) is willing to do whatever he has to prevent the information on the virus to get out.  He orders General Billy Ford (Morgan Freeman), a friend to Sam, to keep him contained.

There is a lot of tension in this movie and it works fairly well.  Yes, there are a lot of contrivances and many of the things that happen are only because of coincidences and lucky breaks, Outbreak is a thrilling time.  Much of the movie requires quite a bit of suspension of disbelief.  In fact, there may be too much suspension at several moments in the film.

Still, I enjoy Dustin Hoffman’s performance and the action, especially in the helicopters, is well done.  The movie does not believe that the outbreak in Cedar Creek is enough drama to carry this movie which is why they bring the more fanciful aspects into the film.

I remember liking this a lot the first time I saw it.  Subsequent viewings have been entertaining, but not quite to the level of that first time.

Lost Girls

Image result for Lost Girls Poster

Continuing on the streaming services for new movies, I watched the new release Lost Girls on Netflix this morning and it was very compelling.

Based on a true story, Lost Girls tells about the disappearance of 24-year old Shannon Gilbert, and her mother’s desperate struggle to find her, to get any help from the local police and to deal with feelings of guilt.

Mari (Amy Ryan) was not a perfect mother, by any stretch of imagination, but when her daughter disappeared, she became an unapologetic tenacious warrior, butting heads with everyone involved in the situation.  Many of the police involved did not take the situation as seriously as they may have since Shannon was working as a sex worker at the time.

Gabriel Byrne played the police detective Richard Dormer, who was in charge of the case.  While searching for the missing girl, police accidentally uncovered the remains of several other girls.  These girls ultimately were shown as victims of the Long Island serial killer.

The film is painfully compelling and paints a picture of Mari, warts and all.  She is the most fascinating of characters here and her anger carried through the entire film.  Much of the anger she displayed came from a place of self-guilt.  She had plenty of struggles with Shannon over the years and she could not help but know that she had contributed to this moment in time for her daughter.  Amy Ryan does a wonderful job of bringing this woman to life.

Though the film does not have a satisfactory conclusion, the filmmakers did an admirable job of providing the viewers with as much closure as they could.  I understand that they were working with an unsolved case, as the film states at the very beginning, and a certain amount of disappointment was going to come with that.

There does feel as if there are several ways this could have been taken that would have made this movie even more compelling, yet the film has some solid performances and is worth the watch.  Just be aware that there will not be a happy ending with the story wrapped into a tight little bow.  Plus, there is text to read at the end that really could have sent this movie into a different direction.

Stargirl

Image result for stargirl movie poster

The latest family friendly film arriving on Disney + is based on the YA novel of the same name by Jerry Spinelli, called Stargirl and it was sweet.

Teenager Leo Borlock (Graham Verchere) was an average student at Mica High School until he meets a charismatic, free-willed new student named Stargirl (Grace VanderWaal), and his life was never the same.  Her ukulele playing at the football game made her into a good luck charm as the school embraced her quirkiness.  Popularity can be fleeting in high school so when things went wrong, Stargirl found herself shunned and Leo found himself confused and desperate to figure things out.

This is the type of film you would expect to find as an original on Disney +.  It featured a healthy dose of magic and goodness, just the type of fare that Disney has thrived on over the years.

Grace VanderWaal is an absolute star.  She had an amazing aura about her that made her someone who you had to keep your eyes on every second she was on the screen.  She had an undeniably special feel about her.

But she was not on screen alone and her co-star, Graham Verchere was solid as well.  He was a perfect foil to Stargirl’s magic.  Verchere’s Leo came alive when he was with Stargirl and Verchere played this beautifully.  His vulnerability filled his performance opposite Stargirl’s confidence.  There was a magic between them.

The story was fairly simple and did not go into a great deal of specifics, but there are some solid moments.  I especially liked how Stargirl did not make the right decisions every time and, unwittingly, does something that hurts a fellow student.  Stargirl was not perfect.  She was flawed as anyone.

The music of the movie was weaved into the story in a wonderful manner.  The music at the football game and then, eventually, at the dance really helped capture the imagination of the audience and created a dream-like state.

Stargirl is a coming of age movie with a lot of Disney magic involved and some great musical numbers.  Some characters are shorted in their development, but the pairing of Stargirl and Leo is what the film is about.

The Hunt

Image result for the hunt poster

“The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.”
― George Orwell, Animal Farm

The Hunt was originally intended to come out in September 2019, but wound up being delayed until this weekend.  The controversy surrounding this movie was clear and the battle lines were drawn.  Lots of controversy and complaining from people who had never seen the movie.

After seeing The Hunt, I can understand why there are people who are polarized about it because it is very clearly a movie that is divisive.  However, I do not understand the anger directed at it since it is obviously a satire and both sides of the political world is lambasted equally.

A group of people from the “deplorables” are kidnapped by some “lefty elitists” and taken to a mysterious location.  They are drugged, gagged and scattered around.  Once they come to, they start being picked off, one by one.  Scattering, the group attempts to avoid the people hunting them.

The first act of this movie was extremely unexpected because as you meet a character that feels as if this was the main protagonist that you are meant to follow, something would happen that makes it clear that this was not the person we were meant to follow.  It’s shocking and it is funny.

Betty Gilpin from GLOW eventually is revealed as the main protagonist of the film and she is just amazing.  This is a star-making performance for her and she is unbelievably likable here.  This is even more impressive since there really is very little effort made to develop characters.  Most of the characters do not get past their surface structure. Betty Gilpin is no exception.  Her development is minimal, but that does not prevent her from being an awesome, kick-ass character.  The end shows that there may have been a reason for the lack of character here, and it may even be worth it.

The violence is vicious and gory.  Some of the kills are well designed and entertaining while others felt as if they were simply there for shock purposes.  I have seen more violent movies so this is not a disqualifying feature for me.

The movie does have a message, in particular, about social media and the nature of it, but the message is not pounded into your heads, although it is not necessarily subtle either.

This was a funny satire with some cool action involved.  Betty Gilpin is an early season leader for Kick Ass Female of the Year in what should be a competitive year in that category.  You may be offended by The Hunt, but, if, like me, you are not, then you will probably laugh and have some good time with an over-the-top movie.

All the Bright Places

Image result for all the bright places poster

This one is better than the last one.

All the Bright Places is a coming-of-age/teen drama movie featuring Elle Fanning and Justice Smith and it is based on an international bestselling novel by Jennifer Niven.

Theodore Finch (Justice Smith) is out running one day when he comes across Violet Markey (Elle Fanning) on the edge of a bridge.  Stopping, he brings her back from the edge and they eventually begin a relationship.  However, there are problems because Finch has his own baggage from a childhood of trauma.  There are some serious mental health issues on both sides of this relationship and yet they seem to find the best in each other.

The story itself is only average.  The two of these characters are quite inconsistent through much of the film and, while that could be a trait of the age, it does not help us connect with them.

However, both Elle Fanning and Justice Smith are charismatic and charming.  They share a great chemistry and fill the screen with the power of their personalities.  You connect with them considerably more because of the actors playing them than the story they are playing out.

There was a bit too much melodrama in the movie for my tastes.  They bounced back and forth between the two of them for much of the run time.  Maybe that is the point, but it feels as if they left too much out from the story of these people.

I have not read the book, but I wonder if it provided more of a opportunity to understand who these characters were and why they acted the way they did.

Still, this was a fine film, if for nothing more than the performances of the two lead actors.

Twin Murders: The Silence of the White City

Image result for twin murders: The Silence of the White city poster

I have begun my “Not Going to Theater While Coughing” streaming service watch today on Netflix with a film called Twin Murders: The Silence of the White City.  The summary on Netflix made me believe that this would be an interesting film.

Nope.

A criminal profiler (Javier Ray) returns to Vitoria-Gasteiz  at the same time that a serial killer, thought to be in jail and being prepared to be released, has begun leaving corpses killed using bees.

I lost interest in this fairly quickly.  The story was not intriguing as I had hoped it would be and was predictable and uninteresting.

The biggest problem with the movie is that it is actually a Spanish language film, but this version is dubbed in English.  Because of that, the actors on screen do not match with the words they are saying and the voice over acting is hardly as emotional or human as it should be.  The voices lack the impact of the real voices.  I would rather had heard the real voices in Spanish and read the subtitles than hearing this half-hearted English translation.  It is nearly impossible to grasp the real performances these actors give because of it.

I hope the next one is a better film.

Coronavirus to End the World

Image result for coronavirus

Okay, maybe that is a bit of hyperbole.

At least, I hope it is hyperbole.

The Coronavirus, also called COVID-19, is spreading across the planet at a rapid speed and it is something that is hard to fathom.  Especially for someone like me, who lives in the middle of the country.  Many of these viruses and diseases from the past years always felt like something that they talked about on the news, but had little to no impact on my life.

However, with COVID-19, that is a totally different situation.

This virus has been deemed a worldwide pandemic and it has started to spread across the United States of America.  There are cases here in Iowa and we have even had some schools closing for a few weeks.  The feeling of the impending virus is a reality.

And now it is affecting the Geek Nation as well.

A Quiet Place II, The New Mutants, Mulan, Fast 9 release dates have been postponed over the fear that box office receipts would be negatively influenced.  Falcon & Winter Soldier had to cancel their shoot over seas in The Prague.  Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson were revealed to have caught the virus and are currently in quarantine in Australia.  Marvel Studio’s Shang Chi has been shut down when their director, Destin Daniel Cretton, has self-isolated.

The list of canceled or postponed events continued with the 2020 Canada Film Festival, the 58th Ann Arbor Film Festival, Disneyland, late night TV shows such as Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers, Universal Studios Hollywood theme park, Ebertfest, Wondercon, Broadway, 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony, TCM Classic Film Festival, 2020 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, CinemaCon 2020, PaleyFest 2020,  SXSW 2020, among others.

While, at this point, Wrestlemania 36 is still scheduled, but there are rumors that it will be postponed soon.  MLB has canceled the remainder of the spring training games and has delayed the start of the season.  NBA has closed down for a month and then will reassess.  NHL is closed. The March Madness Basketball Men and Women Tournament has been canceled as has all the NCAA tournaments in any sports.  The Masters golf competition is closed.  There is speculation that the Olympics that are to be held in Japan will also be canceled.

And this is just the beginning.

It has affected my own viewing habits too.  I am currently getting over a cold and I have a nagging cough.  I have avoided going to the movie theater, not because I am afraid to catch the virus, but because I did not want other audience members looking cross at me every time I coughed.

Or worse.  Because the world is going a tad crazy here.  Fights in stores over toilet paper truly makes me wonder what kind of post-apocalyptic future we could truly handle.  Is the fight over toilet paper an American thing or did this happen in Italy or other European countries when that country was shut down?

Hopefully, all of this preemptive maneuvers help to minimize the effect and the exposure of the virus.  Remember to wash your hands and be safe.

2020 is off the charts right now.

I’m off to watch Netflix….

Final Exam vs. The Experiment

TheDelinquent

Released on $10 Patreon today was the latest team match-up, with two new teams debuting.

SPOILERS FOR FINAL EXAM VS. THE EXPERIMENT

The two new teams are the Final Exam, which included Lon Harris and Paul Oyama, and The Experiment, who are Marc Edward Heuck and Eliot Dewberry.

The match was good, but I really wanted to talk about Lon Harris.

He was fantastic.  Previously, Lon Harris had played the character of “The Professor” and was snooty and was a film snob.  He formed teams with JTE and his brother, but neither really took off.  Last time we saw Lon, he stormed off the set and it was unknown what he was going to do.

LonandWinstonThen, there was a cut scene with Lon and Winston Marshall, the manager of S.W.A.G.– the team that drafted Lon, and we got a hint of the new character that Lon is going to play.  There is no more of the academic.  Now he is the Delinquent.  Drinking alcohol, lacking any motivation, ready to give it all up, Lon is completely different than the last time we saw him.

Then, watching this match, Lon was on fire.  Not only with the trivia, but with his character work.  As The Delinquent, Lon was funny as Winston and Paul tried to keep Lon from wandering off.  Lon played it as if he had never seen a Schmoedown before and was even surprised it was being filmed.  He acted as if he had no idea who Shannon Barney, KOrruption manager and manager of The Experiment, was.

He seemed refreshed from the last time I saw him and he showed it in his game.  I am very excited to see Lon continue this character and to see where he goes with this.

Lon was not the only new direction shown in this episode.  Paul Oyama dropped the leather jacket and sunglasses and brought a new approach with his attitude.  Oyama was more likable here than at any point last year.

We also saw the continuation of the storyline of the break up of the Wildberries with Shannon and Marc Edward Heuck tormenting Eliot Newberry.  At some point this season, this is building up toward Josh Macuga returning and saving Eliot from the evil KOrruption.

The team league looks to be off the charts this season, with a ton of new teams joining the fantastic carry over teams.  Such a powerful group of teams.

This match will be available to all on YouTube this Thursday.

The Family vs. KOrruption (Schmoedown Throwdown)

SPOILERS FOR SCHMOEDOWN THROWDOWN

SchmopedownThrowdownMarch

Season 7 of the Movie Trivia Schmoedown has come out hot.

One week out of one of the greatest single title matches in the Schmoedown history, they are at it once again.

Kristian Harloff, attempting to provide the best content available for $10 and above Patreons of the MTS, had announced that they wanted to do more Schmoedown Throwdowns, live streams of matches from Collider Studios.  The first of which took place on March 7, 2020 and it was a doozy.

In a number one contender match, former champions KOrruption (Mike Kalinowski and Chance Ellison) took on The Family (Drew McWeeny and Andrew Ghai).  This match was strong and showed how competitive both teams were.  KOrruption pulled out a 36-31 victory as they broke a tie game by answering their 5-point question in the third round.

As competitive and entertaining the match was, the biggest news happened in the post interviews.  The wonderful Jenn Sterger returned from her AEW duties to conduct the backstage interviews and chaos ensued.

After speaking with the rightfully braggadocios KOrruption, managed by Shannon Barney, who spent some time ripping on the reigning team champions Founding Fathers (Dan Murrell and John Rocha) Jenn suddenly found her hands full with The Family.

An interview with Andrew Ghai is always a challenge, but this shock wave was created by “The Godfather” Drew McWeeny.  The Family is a member of the faction called The Usual Suspects, managed by Samm Levine, McWeeny’s former team championship partner (in Above the Line).  However, Samm could not attend the match this Saturday and assigned team faction member Jeannine the Machine to take his place.  McWeeny expressed some frustration after the loss to KOrruption.

[Responding to Sterger’s question about being beat up over the loss] “I wouldn’t say that I was beat up over it.  I’ve just reach a point where I’ve realized something. Um, you know I was promised a lot of stuff by a lot of people,” said McWeeny.  “I think I’d feel better if my manager had shown up, and I feel, in general, like, maybe, just maybe, you guys can do this by yourselves.  I think I’m retired, folks.  Have a good day.”

At this point, McWeeny walked out of the interview, leaving Ghai and Jeannine with their mouths open.  This opened the door for a gloating Kalinowski to come into the interview to rub the salt into the wounds.  Kalinowski made reference to the time he left his team, DC Movie News, because of lack of support.  He took the opportunity to challenge Ghai to a one-on-one match in Houston in April.

Ghai, never off balance for too long, apologized to Kalinowski for his own behavior during the DC Movie News break up and told Mike that it wasn’t his fault.  Offering a hug, Ghai kept telling Mike that it wasn’t his fault, finally accepting the challenge.  The apology may not have been too sincere.

This was shocking.  It was also turnabout.  Twice now over the last couple of years, Drew McWeeny has had a team partner up and retire on him.  First, Samm Levine retired from active game play while they were Above the Line.  They were also the team champions at this point, causing them to forfeit the titles.  McWeeny has been unsuccessfully chasing those belts since that split.

Then, last year after the defeat of The Family by Shazam (William Bibbiani & The Kid) for the Ultimate Schmoedown Team Tournament victory, Ghai, frustrated over his inability to get those titles back for McWeeny, announced his retirement.

Ghai changed his mind on retirement, but there were still several weeks/months that McWeeny did not know what was going to happen (although the match where Ghai retired aired only days before the match where he reversed the retirement, the team match was pre-taped and had occurred in real time considerably earlier).

This shocking announcement from McWeeny has opened a ton of questions.  Is this McWeeny actually looking for a break?  Is this storyline?  Will McWeeny try to force a trade from Levine?  Is The Family completely broken up?  Will we get a Samm Levine-Drew McWeeny pre- or post-scene?  The announcement from McWeeny was extremely well done because I did not see it coming and, since the studio audience went completely silent when it happened, they did not see it coming either.

This match also saw the return to form of snarky heel Mike Kalinowski.  There was no breaking character from Mike this week as he was in full heel mode and was doing some top line work.  The idea of some of the wicked promos between Kalinowski and Ghai leading to the Houston event makes me giddy.

The excellence of season 7 of the Movie Trivia Schmoedown continues on.  Get all of the great trivia entertainment by joining the Schmoedown Patreon at patreon.com/schmoedown.

The Way Back (2020)

Image result for the way back poster

One has to admire the bravery of the performance in this movie from Ben Affleck.  He has recently suffered from alcoholism and had checked himself into a treatment center and this could not have been easy to play this role.  Yet he did it and he was tremendous in it.

The Way Back is a sports movie with more.  Jack Cunningham (Ben Affleck) was a former star high school player at the Catholic High School.  The basketball world was at his feet, but he chose to leave it behind.  A troubled life followed which included a separation with his wife (Janina Gavankar) and an alcohol problem.

When his old high school’s coach had a heart attack, Jack is offered the position of head coach, working alongside assistant coach Dan (Al Madrigal) of a team with a group of problematic players who have not been successful.

The basic basketball scenes in this movie are nothing new.  In fact, it would be fair to say that most of the basketball scenes here are extremely formulaic.  Not to say they were not well done, but there was absolutely nothing new about any of them.  Everything that happened was something that we had seen before.

However, the scenes with Jack and his troubles were very well done and brought an uncertainty to the story.  The final act of the film was just strong and really took the film into an area where you were not sure what was going to happen.  That was a refreshing switch from what had been a predictable tale.

Ben Affleck was magnificent here.  He brought a depth and an anguish to Jack Cunningham that was relatable and understandable.  You wanted to see this guy overcome his demons, but the film does not take that easy route.  Just because his basketball team was having success, it did not mean that the problems that had haunted him and had driven him to hide in a bottle were gone.  In fact, it may have made those issues all the worse.

I do think the film felt a little long, but I am not sure where you would have cut.  The film was more about Affleck than it was the game of basketball.  Because of that, some of the characters on the basketball team were shorted in development.  The movie was Affleck’s story and it gave him the minutes to show it.

Directed by Gavin O’Connor, who also directed feel good sports movies Miracle and Warrior, found a way to subvert the expectations of the genre with this movie.  It seemed that this was going to be just another formulaic sports movie, until it wasn’t.

Powerful and difficult to watch at times, The Way Back is a good movie with a strong lead performance.

Spenser Confidential

Back in the 1980s, there was a TV program on ABC called Spenser for Hire and starred Robert Urich and Avery Brooks.  I never loved this series, but I watched it a few times.  So you can forgive me that I did not figure out that the new film on Netflix, Spenser Confidential is a return to that character, this time starring Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke.

Based on the novel “Wonderland” by Robert B Parker and directed by Peter Berg, Spenser (Mark Wahlberg) was a cop convicted of assaulting his police chief.  After serving his time, Spenser returned to his life with the intent of leaving his home in Boston and heading out west to drive truck.  However, a group of crooked cops and drug runners throw problems in his path.  Spenser has to team up with Hawk (Winston Duke), a MMA fighter who was living with Spenser’s mentor, Henry (Alan Arkin), to try to solve the murders of a couple of Spenser’s previous colleagues.

I had some problems with this movie.  First and foremost, it felt as if the film did not know what kind of film it wanted to be.  At first it felt flashy and dumb, like a Michael Bay movie.  Then it seemed like it wanted to be a buddy cop movie.  Then, it tried to be a slapstick comedy.  Then there was serious drama with the crime story.  All of these different styles did not fit together in this case and really clashed.  By trying to be it all, this movie was never able to be itself.  It failed in all of the different tones.

Wahlberg and Duke were fine.  Duke will always be M’Baku from Marvel’s Black Panther, and, unfortunately, this version of Hawk was nothing like the Avery Brooks version.  I understand the attempt to take the character in a different direction, but this was a real tangent.  Arkin was the same basic character that Arkin is in every movie these days.  There is a character named Cissy (Iliza Shlesinger), Spenser’s former girlfriend, but the less mentioned about her the better.  This character is easily the most annoying and least engaging character on the screen.

And Marc Maron is here too, but he is wasted.  His character is so disposable that I am not even sure what his role here was.

The story is totally messy.  It was convoluted and confusing.  It wanted to be a mystery as well, but that played like every low-level buddy cop film you’ve ever seen.  The bad guys are woefully underdeveloped and are basically one-dimensional crooks from your typical crime movie.  Nothing special about any of them.  They kept referring to Boylan (Michael Gaston), the police chief Spenser assaulted, but we knew so little about him that their use of him felt like lazy writing.

The comedy in the movie was just such a flop. There is one scene with Spenser and a dog that is as dumb as it can be.  I am not sure I can recall any of the humor actually hitting.

This was just a bad movie and a failed attempt to bring the character of Spenser back to relevance.  Wahlberg and Duke worked okay together and would be the best part of this movie.  They are absolutely not enough to save this silly reboot.   I do not think fans of the Spenser for Hire series or the Robert B. Parker novels featuring the character of Spenser will enjoy this movie much.

I have been excited about this comic since I saw it was coming out.  I was a big fan of the previous Spider-Man Noir series, having read them in a trade paperback collection.  Then, Spider-Man Noir made his presence felt amazingly on the big screen, vocied by the one-and-only Nic Cage, in the Academy Award winning animated masterpiece, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

This issue did not disappoint.

I have never been a huge fan of alternate realities, but there is just something so stylish and special about Spider-Man Noir.  The look of the comic is unlike anything on the market currently.  The black and white imagery, with the splashes of colors as highlights, truly make this a beautiful comic to read.

This Peter Parker shares enough characteristics of the main Spider-Man that make him familiar, but not a copy.  This is a character all to himself.  He is not just another version of Peter Parker and that is why I like this version.  I also enjoy the pulpy/noir feel to the story.  This makes a nice co-read to DC’s Strange Adventures.

I have to say that I feel that the cover is a little too busy.  It suffers from the same problems that a lot of movie posters do these days.  It tried to cram all of the different faces and items on the cover, but it loses part of the story that the cover is trying to show.  The art is great, but I would rather have something more specific happening.

Other than that, I did not have any problems with the new Spider-Man Noir series and I look forward to continuing this noiry-goodness over the coming months.

“Chapter 1: They Floated Above the Ground”

I have always liked the character of Adam Strange, even if I really did not know much about him.

I remember seeing him appear in some old Justice League books when I was a kid and I liked the look of the character.  He appealed to me and inspired some creativity.  I remember basing a few of my own characters on the design of Adam Strange.

Yet, I did not have any books that he appeared in regularly and I truly did not know that much about the character.

When I saw the DC Black Label issue out today on the stand, and that Todd, my friend at the comic shop, had placed it at number one on list top five of the week list, I decided to give it a chance.

Then I saw that it was written by Tom King.  King has been working on DC books lately so I have not seen much of his work, but I know his run on Mister Miracle was tremendous and his Vision series for Marvel is one of my top five or so runs ever.  He seems to be able to take those characters that are not quite as mainstream or A-list as others and find that sweet spot for them.  He did it with Vision.  He did it with Mister Miracle and it feels as if he is on target once again with Adam Strange.

The story was interesting and engaging.  There were two parts taking place at the same time, creating an effective mystery about exactly what had happened.  Lots of little clues were dropped that seasoned the meal that this series is going to deliver.

I loved the art work here too.  It fit the tone perfectly.  There was an old fashioned, pulpy feel to the art which fit beautifully with Adam Strange, a character that shares many characteristics in common with a Phantom or a Flash Gordon.  There is a brightness to the art that really stands out.

However, there is a dark undertone to the story that plays wonderfully against the art.  This feels that there is something horrible getting ready to happen and I am excited to see where this takes me.
