The Discovery

I saw this film on Netflix and I wondered about it.  It sounded interesting so I gave it a chance.  Lo and behold, there was Robert Redford staring back from my computer screen talking to Mary Steenburgen.  That first five minutes of the film with these two powerhouse actors set up the film very well and the next moment instantly grabbed my attention and engaged me completely.

Netflix has been the place to be for new bingable television series, and the streaming service has been heading into feature film releases as well.  I decided to give the remainder of this film a look.

Set in the near future after “the discovery,” the world was a different place.  Dr. Thomas Harbor (Robert Redford) had a major breakthrough and was able to prove the existence of an afterlife.  However, this led thousands of people to “reset” their lives by killing themselves.

Harbor set up his lab on an island where a group of followers, cult-like, came to join him and help him in his continued research.  Harbor’s son Will (Jason Segel) came to the island to try to reason with his father.  Along the way, Will met Isla (Rooney Mara), whom he saved from her own attempt to kill herself.  Will and Isla begin to grow closer as they try to determine exactly what his father was up to.

Very much of  science fiction story, The Discovery played like a mystery as well.  Will finds a recording of another man’s “memory” and he tries to discover exactly what was happening.

There are some very intriguing metaphysical concepts at work here, and I do like the general story this film presents.  I can’t go into more detail without spoiling what that is and I would not want to do that.

This realization does lead to what is a cool reveal at the end about what had or was happening.

One thing I am not sure the film does a good job with is the character of Dr. Harbor.  He, at times, is played like a true scientist while other times is played like a crazed cult leader.  I am not sure which one of these Redford is really playing, and that is a major issue with the film.  Redford played the role well, but the writing of the character just felt all over the place.

I do like Jason Segel here though.  His story arc is well developed and I enjoyed his relationship with Rooney Mara, though it may have been rushed too much.  I believed that this connection was strong, and that is something that is vital for the ending piece to work.

Unfortunately, the film does not match the intensity of that first five minutes, but it does offer a very intriguing concept of an after life and does allow for an exploration of what this all means.  Despite flaws, The Discovery was a solid film to watch on my day off.

The TV Week That Was

spoilers

Netflix continued to be the place to be for television these days.

Image result for 13 reasons whyI finished binging 13 Reasons Why this week.  The thirteenth episode of this show was as uncomfortable as I have been watching a fictional story in a long time.  It was brutal.  The scene where we see Hannah slitting her wrists in the bathtub was so realistic and emotionally powerful that I had to turn away.  With this being juxtapositioned opposite Clay confronting the counselor (which was tear-inducing in itself), the episode was unbelievable.  There were some nitpicks that I had with the series, but, overall, I think this was about as effective of a series on these topics as you are going to find.

Image result for new mst3kThen, Netflix dropped the new Mystery Science Theater 3000 series this past Friday. Fourteen episodes following in the original MST3K footsteps of focusing on old time bad films, providing a riff over top.  I found out about this from the RiffTrax guys at their performance of Samurai Cop this week and I was happy to get a chance to see it.  Now, since each episode is an hour and a half and has 14 episodes, it is not an easy binge.  I have seen the first four episodes and they were entertaining.  New star Jonah Ray embraces everything that MST3K did and our villains, Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt, are really charming.  I hope to see the remainder of these episodes as I go.

andreykoThe Movie Trivia Schmoedown had a huge event this past week on YouTube as well.  It was called the Free4All and it was based loosely on the WWE’s Royal Rumble.  The two-part video was hosted by Schmoe Kristian Harloff and John Campea.   The show featured five competitors at a time answering movie trivia questions.  After five questions, the player or players with the lowest score was eliminated, only to be replaced by new competitors.  The rounds continued until 35 different players entered the fray.  Competitors included such notable players as Dan Murrell, reigning Schmoedown Champion John Rocca, Mark “Baby Carrots” Ellis, “The Beast” William Bibbiani among many others.  The best moment of the show was when Marc Andreyko was able to eliminate Murrell, Rocca, Bibbiani and Drew schmoedownsurpriseMcWeeney all in one round in the biggest shock of the show.  In the end, the player who drew number 34, “The Inglorious One” Samm Levine was able to win the Free4All.  Levine, an actor who did appear in Inglorious Basterds, now has the opportunity to go after any title of his choosing.  In the post show interview, Levine indicated that he would be going after the winner of John Rocca and Mark Reilly championship match up scheduled for next week.  The Free4All was a tremendous show and shows just how creative the Collider show has become.

Image result for melissa mccarthy as easter bunnySaturday Night Live went live in all time zones across the United States this past Saturday for the first time ever.  Tonight Show host and former SNL alum Jimmy Fallon hosted the show and it saw the return of Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump and Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer.

By the way, as I am typing this Match Game is on and has Martha Stewart among the stars.  Alec Baldwin just said that Martha looks “like she is a hostage.”  Line of the night!

Image result for scandal what ifScandal had a “what if” episode this week.  What If was once a Marvel Comic where the Watcher would look into a parallel universe and tell the story of something that happened differently than it did in the real Marvel Universe.  The same thing happened on Scandal (except for the Watcher thing).  We saw what would happen if Olivia had not fixed the election for Fitz.  Scandal has always had some kind of weird fixation on Olivia and Fitz, despite the fact that they are the WORST couple ever on television, so, of course, at the end of this What If episode, these two enablers wound up together.  This felt like a filler episode that really wasn’t worth the time.

batesBates Motel had a great moment this week as former Sheriff Alex Romero arrived back at the Bates Motel with his intention of getting revenge on Norman.  Unfortunately for him, he did not find Norman there, since Norman had been arrested for the murder of several people in town.  Of course, he did find Chick, who was typing his book in the cellar, in the room that Norman had constructed for his mother’s dead body.  As Chick spoke romantically about the fate of Norma, Alex put a bullet in his head.  That was a fantastic moment of TV for the week and setting up the ultimate showdown between Alex and Norman.

Image result for agents of shield frameworkAgents of SHIELD continued its awesome new story arc inside the Framework.  We met the Patriot, a part of the resistance, and we saw how evil this Doctor “Leo” aka Fitz really was as he gunned down Agnes despite Simmons’s insistence that he would never do it.  Rumors are floating around that Agents of SHIELD will receive a fifth season despite talk of cancellation all year long.  Hopefully that is the case since this show has been consistently awesome all year long.

Image result for jessica lange as Joan CrawfordEven more awesome- Feud: Bette and Joan.  The FX show from Ryan Murphy is exceptionally excellent every week.  Susan Sarandon has been great as Bette Davis, but Jessica Lange is absolutely brilliant each week as she loses herself into the role of Joan Crawford each episode.  Lange becomes Joan Crawford and brings such humanity to the role that you understand and relate to Crawford no matter what rotten thing she may be doing.  This is the best I have ever seen Lange, even better than her amazing roles on American Horror Story.  Feud: Bette and Joan is magic and if you are not watching it, you are truly missing something special.

Next week:  the return of Fargo on FX.  FX is the network that is challenging Netflix as the network with the best shows.  Also on:  Trial and Error’s finale, Agents of SHIELD, the penultimate series episode of Bates Motel, Rocca vs. Reilly.

Happy viewing.

The Case for Christ

Image result for the case for christ movie poster

I was led to believe from some of the reviews I had see for The Case for Christ that this film did not fall into the traps that other faith-based films fell.  Unfortunately, I have to disagree with that.

Journalist Lee Strobel (Mike Vogel) and his wife Leslie (Erika Christensen) were out at dinner with their daughter when she began choking on a piece of candy.  Calling out for help, Rose from LOST (L. Scott Caldwell playing a nurse called Alfie) came to their aid.  After saving the little girl, Alfie said that she and her husband hadn’t intended on coming to this restaurant, but said God had brought them to this restaurant instead.

Lee and Leslie were admitted atheists but Alfie’s words brought feelings up in Leslie that she did not expect.  She began to turn to Christianity.  Lee remained a skeptic and found the sudden change in their status quo causing troubles in their marriage.

Lee decided that he would do what he did best… investigate Christianity with the intent of disproving the resurrection of Jesus, something that he found more difficult to do as he proceeded.

Now, I think there could have been some really interesting story options here.  How the differences between a believer and a non-believer would affect a marriage, especially with the sudden change from atheist to believer, is a fascinating dynamic and it would be interesting to explore the idea without judging one or the other.

However, this film immediately casts judgment on Lee, making him jealous of Leslie’s newfound relationship with God.  He then begins a downward spiral turning him into a hot mess during his investigation, going as far as making him fail at his job at the newspaper.  This couple showed no signs of having any problems prior to the daughter choking so all of this came after Leslie’s change of perception.

The other interesting concept that this film used was the actual investigation into Christianity, but this is very one sided as well.  Every “expert” Lee talks to is condescending and approaches the subject through the eyes of their own biases.  The film needed to balance the investigation with some experts for Lee’s side as well, to make the journey feel more true to life.  There was a scene with one of the experts in a debate about this very topic.  That debate would have been a great addition to this movie.  It was not included to make sure that the other side did not receive the proper consideration.

The Case for Christ was not completely terrible, but it did not break the issues faith-based films have, and it could have been the faith-based film that accomplished that feat.  If you liked the other faith-based films of the last several years, then this will be another one for you.

The Fate of the Furious

Image result for fate of the furious movie poster

The Hate of the Furious.

That is what I expected heading into the latest installments, the eighth one, in the Fast and the Furious franchise.  I saw the trailers for this film and I hated the whole Dom (Vin Diesel) turns on his team and sides with the bad guys angle they were telling.

I pictured a storyline involving hypnosis or amnesia that would border on the worst of the soap opera cliches that would have me rolling my eyes through the entire run time of Fate of the Furious.

But something weird happened as I was watching this movie that I was sure I was going to despise…

I was enjoying it.

One of the biggest problems that I anticipated turned into one of the film’s strengths.  They were able to take the film’s reason for Dom turning on his “Family” (which, by the way, if you were playing a drinking game and took a shot every time someone mentioned family in this film, you would be drunk off your butt before the end of the first act), and make it viable.  Not only was the reason viable, it was emotionally satisfying and it fit in with the character of Dom and it gave me a reason to root for him.  I never thought that was possible, but that is exactly what happened.

The plot, as it were, was not anything special.  On his honeymoon, Dom is approached by the villain of the film, Cipher (Charlize Theron) and she convinces him to start helping her (I will not spoil how she does the convincing).  When the team heads into Germany to recover a powerful weapon, Dom turns on them, in particular Luke (Dwayne Johnson), and takes the weapon to Cipher.

Because of the betrayal, Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) brings in Deckard (Jason Statham) to join the team and help track down Dom.  Then, action set pieces ensue.

Sure, there are plenty of massive plot holes scattered throughout the Fate of the Furious, but none of those matter. You expect those types of problems in this film.  The Fast and the Furious movie franchise is supposed to be big, dumb, physics-denying action sequences that are like car porn.  Some times I think it is unfair to judge these movies with such a kaleidoscope.  Certainly if this were another movie sans the Fast & the Furious name, we would rip it apart for lacking the basic tenets of filmmaking that this franchise does.

I guess the key is that the Fast and the Furious films have really become very entertaining.

The most entertaining aspect of the Fate of the Furious, far and away, was the interactions between Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham.  From the moment these two behemoths meet inside the high security prison, The Rock and Statham are trash talking at its highest level.  Both men are ridiculously charismatic and they share a chemistry like few others might (I would watch the hell out of a spin off movie featuring these two).  Because of this, the audience quickly forgets about the crimes that Deckard had committed in previous films, which included the murder of another of the “family”, Han (Sung Kang).  Thanks to the Rock, as well as Statham’s work with another cast member in one of the more outrageous action set pieces on board an airplane, Deckard is redeemed.

However, it felt as if The Rock did start accepting Deckard too quickly.  I would have enjoyed more of the antagonistic relationship between these two than what we got.  And there was even less of the feeling of anger toward Deckard from the rest of the crew that made little sense.

Although I feel that there were few unbelievably ridiculous action set pieces in the Fate of the Furious, they had their share of moments where you can only suspend your disbelief so much.  Twice they had people leaping from speeding cars going in excess of 200 miles an hour only to roll safely without a scratch on them.  In a situation that should completely crush multiple bones, they are unscathed.

I also wish that whoever marketed this film would have held back the scene of the submarine crashing out from under the ice.  Had that moment not been included in the trailer, I think that could have been a huge moment in the movie.  As it was, I knew it was coming and I found it considerably less engaging.  You could have saved that scene from being spoiled in the trailer and made it something out of this world.

The film also benefited from several smaller performances that had been added to the rest of the cast.  Scott Eastwood joined the group as Mr. Nobody’s new rookie right hand man and he brings an interesting dynamic.  Helen Mirren arrives in an important cameo (although her entire involvement was one of those moments that really stretched the credibility of the film).  Kurt Russell is awesome as ever and I can’t wait for him to be Ego the Living Planet in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.  And there was a cool cameo from Luke Wilson as well.

I had no expectations of liking this movie.  I was sure that the Dom “heel” turn was going to be ridiculous and would completely ruin the movie.  I was wrong.  That, as well as The Rock and Jason Statham, was the best reason to enjoy the movie.  It is far from a perfect film, but it does entertain you.

RiffTrax Live

Related image

I just came back from the latest live show presented by RiffTrax.  Michael Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett, veterans of the classic Mystery Science Theater 3000, took the stage in Nashville and riffed the truly terrible film Samurai Cop, and, once again, made this film more entertaining than it ever had a chance to be.  This has been happening for several years, and it is something that I look forward to every time.

And there is an encore show on Tuesday, April 18th of Samurai Cop, and it is a must see.

It got me thinking about what were my favorite live performances by this trio.  Heading over to their web site at http://www.rifftrax.com/live, I found a long list of their live shows.  I have seen most of them (yes, I missed the classic Plan 9 form Outer Space), and I chose my ten favorite performances.

Honorable Mention:  Time Chasers, Starship Troopers ( I had trouble with the audio of this riff or it might be in the top ten), Godzilla, MST300 Reunion show

#10.  Carnival of Souls.

Related image

Related imageA Halloween episode from last year, Carnival of Souls was a creepy cult film where Mary survived a car crash only to wind up as an organist at a church.  There is a pale figure that follows her and she winds up at an abandoned pavilion.  Undead fun with the Carnival of Souls.

#9, Sharknado 2

Image result for sharknado 2 rifftrax

Related imageThe sequel to the original ridiculous SyFy show was riffed by our guys and how can you not enjoy sharks inside tornadoes.    The Sharknado hits New York and we see such things as Judd Hirsch and a cameo from Jared from Subway.

#8.  Santa Claus Conquers the Martian

Image result for santa claus conquers the martians rifftrax

Related imageSanta Claus has been a key character in the world of the RiffTrax universe.  He has been in Christmas shorts, he met the Ice Cream Bunny, and he has conquered Martians.  This is the standout performance by Kris Kringle.  The silliness of the Martians, especially Droppo, and the actually kidnapping of Santa Claus to Mars, made this a must see Christmas riff.

#7. Sharknado

Image result for sharknado rifftrax

Image result for sharknado rifftraxSharknado was a pop culture phenomenon.  No really.  I know it was hard to believe, but the film created a lot of buzz and discussion.  Perhaps the buzz was about how bad it was, but it was buzz nonetheless.  So when it was announced that the film was receiving the big screen RiffTrax Live treatment, I was extremely excited.  And the guys did not let me down.  I did not watch Sharknado on television, but I came out to see it being riffed.

#6.  Night of the Living Dead.

Image result for night of the living dead rifftrax

Image result for night of the living dead rifftrax duane jonesThis showed that even an influential classic can be riffed effectively by Kevin, Michael and Bill.  George Romero basically brought zombies into the pop culture (and where would television be today without them?) and also broke a lot of ground with an African American lead actor (Duane Jones as Ben).  Despite all of this, the RiffTrax presentation of the Night of the Living Dead is one of the best of all time.

#5.  Manos: The Hands of Fate.

Image result for manos hands of fate rifftrax

Image result for manos hands of fate rifftraxThis was the first live performance I saw with the RiffTrax gang.  I went to my Cinemark Theater in the Quad Cities not sure what to expect.  I had seen MST300 before, but I was totally unprepared for how much I enjoyed this version.  The way Kevin, Bill and Michael interacted with one another on stage, riffing this silly movie, taking the unintentional funny from the film and making it intentionally funny was amazing.  Manos: The Hands of Fate owes a lot to RiffTrax for making it a cult sensation.

#4. Anaconda

Related imageI nearly died when that waterfall started going back up.  The timing of the joke was perfect and had me amazed.  With Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, Ice Cube, Eric Stoltz, and Jon Voight, this is probably the film with the best cast to be riffed live.  Of course, it might be the most ridiculous Jon Voight performance of all time as well.

#3.  The Room.

Image result for the room rifftrax

It was the kick off to The Crappening.  And how much more crappy can you get than this film directed by, written by, produced by and starred in by Tommy Wiseau.  Wiseau is so bad, he has become a cult classic, as has The Room (which is not he film with Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay in it).  Featuring one of the more disturbing sex scenes ever to grace film, The Room is one of the worst films ever made.  And that makes it perfect for RiffTrax.

#2. Samurai Cop

Image result for samurai Cop rifftrax

Image result for samurai Cop rifftraxI really loved this tonight.  This was uncharacteristically a rated R film because of language and violence, something that RiffTrax Live usually does not include, but this one was well worth it.  Every “MF” let loose by the Police Captain Rohmer (easily my favorite character) was just tremendously funny.  I laughed throughout the showing of Samurai Cop.  The ridiculousness of the acting, the script and the stunts spoke for themselves.  The wig that seemed to constantly change.  The “Black Gift.”  The cutting off of the head of an informant.  Exploding cars.  Hand grenades that explode twice.  The gunfire.  Bill, Michael and Kevin were on absolute fire with this film.  There was also a fantastic song for the credits sung by Kevin Murphy all about the film.  If you have a chance to head to the encore, do it.  It is worth the time.

#1.  Birdemic: Shock and Terror.

Image result for birdemic rifftrax

Image result for birdemic rifftraxThis is my absolutely favorite RiffTrax Live performance.  I purchased it on the web site.  The first half of the movie where the film seemed like it was more about driving and parking than it was about any kind of killer birds are one thing, but when the birds actually show up, the film becomes even worse.  Some of the most embarrassingly poor special effects ever to find its way onto a screen.  The idea behind this “horror” movie makes one wonder why anyone would greenlight it.  Surely, everyone knew that what they were making was ridiculously bad.  Rod is probably the worst protagonist ever.  Watching him walk or pronounce “solar panels” tells you everything you need to know.  And the guys do not let up on the riffing of this character.  You know a film is something else when Kevin, Michael and Bill do not have to say anything, and the audience is cracking up.  In fact, some of my favorite moments of Birdemic: Shock and Terror is when Kevin, Bill and Michael start laughing at what they see on the screen.  No joke required.  It is the best of the worst and the top RiffTrax show ever.

The Next great Netflix YA adaption should be…..

I have been binging the brilliant new series on Netflix, 13 Reasons Why.  The show is based on the YA book of the same name that was written by Jay Asher.  I read the book last year and really enjoyed it.  It was original and emotional and I never thought it would be adapted on a television screen.  However, Netflix has shown me that it is possible.  In fact, Netflix’s model is considerably better than the YA movies that have populated the big screen over the last several years.  So what books could be the next great series from Netflix?  I have five suggestions.

Image result for dorothy must die#5.  Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige.  The Wizard of Oz is still a classic and everyone knows about the story.  So this book series where we see that Dorothy and her friends from Oz had returned to the land and became corrupted by the magic of the land is a truly awesome idea.  We follow a new Kansas girl, named Amy and her own trip to Oz.  The familiar being switched is a winning formula and a multiple episode series allows Danielle Paige’s story to really develop its new (yet old) characters.

Image result for 14 clines#4.  14 by Peter Clines.  I thought about offering up the Ex-Heroes series featuring super heroes and zombies because… I mean, it is super heroes and zombies.  What more could you want.  However, 14 is a story that would be even more interesting.  The mystery surrounding the building is compelling and could easily create a wonderfully frightening world with fantastic characters.

Image result for asylum roux#3.  Asylum by Madeleine Roux.  This horror series by Madeleine Roux brings the main character to a special college that was held inside an old asylum.  This book seriously creeped me out, and has had several sequels.  In the book, there are spooky photos throughout the novel that help create the mood.  With enjoyable characters and a well developed mystery, Asylum would be a great addition to Netflix’s catalog.

#2.  The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes.  The Naturals are a group of amazing young people involved in a special group of profilers from the FBI.  The five main characters are as compelling as any characters in any of these books.  Each of them have a specialty.  Cassie can read people.  It was a skill she got from her mother, who was killed by a serial killer.  The five kids would be vitally important to this story and their complicated relationships are perfect for this series.

Image result for grasshopper jungle#1.  Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith.  This is a brilliant novel.  I absolutely loved this book.  I laughed through the entire thing.  It was original.  It was the story of some young teen named Austin Szerba in a small town in Iowa that has had an attack by giant sized Praying Mantis, leading to a potential apocalypse.  The book features all of the teen tropes of coming of age but uses them in a laugh out loud manner.  Rumor has it that the book is being developed into a movie with Edgar Wright attached.  Still, I think this would work all the better on Netflix.

The TV Week That Was

spoilers

Image result for 13 reasons why

I am currently watching the series 13 Reasons Why on Netflix.  Based on a young adult book written by Jay Ashur that I read last year, the show is very powerful.  Dylan Minnette who plays the lead character Clay is bringing a remarkable performance to this series.  The show does a solid job of creating 13 episodes from one normal book, and I am completely addicted.  I have just finished episode 9 as we are discovering the truth behind the tragic party that would lead to the suicide of Hannah that the book/show is based upon.  Netflix has another binge-worthy show added to its lineup.

Image result for shiva attacks the SaviorsSpeaking of suicide, last week’s season finale of the Walking Dead featured the suicide of Sasha, but for a completely different reason than Hannah.  Sasha had been placed in a coffin by Negan and she took the poison that had been given to her by Eugene.  She made sure that she was a zombie by the time that coffin was opened up, shocking the crap out of Negan.  But that was not the only shock Negan had coming as Shiva from the Kingdom made its presence known, causing Negan to yell out, “They’ve got a tiger!”  Plus, we had the garbage allies turn traitor against Rick and his forces.  The finale had its ups and downs, but everything is set up for the next season to be full fledged war.

Image result for shinsuke debuts on smackdownWWE RAW and Smackdown had the fallout from Sunday’s Wrestlemania.  The return of the Hardy Boyz being probably the biggest moment from the PPV.  We also saw the main roster debuts of The Revival, Shinsuke Nakamura, “The Perfect 10” Tye Dillinger.  The crowds were, once again, the best part of the shows as they are just completely active and chant whatever they wanted.  Some find that annoying, but, to me, the live crowd makes the action all the better.  Then, Vince McMahon showed up and told the live crowd on RAW that next week they were going to have a “Superstar Shakeup.”  That is not a draft, folks, but I am guessing it will be similar.  Since that, the WWE has announced that the Superstar Shakeup will run over both RAW and Smackdown.

Image result for huck in water and shot scandalHowever, the biggest super hero of the week had to be Huck from Scandal, who apparently can not die.  With three bullets in his chest and locked in a trunk of a car that has been submerged in a lake, Huck is able to get free and not drown.  Now, I am glad that Huck survived his ordeal, because he was always one of my favorite characters (at least in the first couple of seasons before they turned him into a psychotic killer), but his survival stretched credibility a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong way.  I’m also not overly fond of what they did with Quinn.

Image result for feud bette and joan OscarsJessica Lange really stood out this past week on Feud: Bette and Joan.  You could feel every bit of emotion of Lange’s Joan Crawford as she prepared for Oscar night and her plan to make sure that Bette Davis was not going to walk away with Best Actress.  This episode was must see and really should be Jessica Lange’s Emmy reel.  And, the great dame was breathtaking as the silver Oscar.  Feud continues to be one of the most amazing shows on television, continuing FX’s run of brilliant shows.

Image result for season 5 bates motel episode 7Bates Motel presented the interaction between Norman Bates and his brother Dylan and it was as twisted as you can imagine.  Norman showed that he really did love his brother despite the craziness that is his alter ego, Mother.  And the scene where Norman, afraid that the police was coming to search his house, took the body of Norma and buried it in the woods was as chilling as you could imagine.  Bates Motel is flying towards the finale as Norman called in to confess to the police about the murder of Sam Loomis.  Anything is possible with Bates Motel.

I love how ABC just keeps bringing episodes of Match Game to fill holes in their lineup.  It is currently airing Sunday nights at 8 PM Central after being on Wednesday at 9 Central.  Match Game is so much fun that I hope it stays around wherever in the lineup they can fit it for years to come.

Personal Shopper

I am honestly not sure what was going on here.  All I know is that Kristen Stewart was fantastic.

Kristen Stewart is no longer the butt of all the jokes for her acting skills that went on display in the Twilight saga.  She has come far from those films.  She has been pretty successful in supporting roles and secondary characters, but this performance was haunting as the lead character.

Unfortunately, the story itself was extremely weird and all over the place.

Maureen (Kristen Stewart) was the personal shopper of a famous model Kyra (Nora von Waldstatten), but she is also a medium trying to reconnect with her twin brother who had died of a heart attack.  Maureen had the same genetic imperfection of the heart that claimed the life of her brother, but she is told that she was in no danger.  Oh, this takes place in Paris, by the way.

She continues to buy dresses and try to connect to the afterlife, when she begins a conversation via text message with a mysterious person that encouraged Maureen to try on the model’s clothes.  This carried the film through the second act, but when the actress wound up brutally murdered, the film took another weird twist.

I have to say, the film started slowly, and I was finding it dull, but when the text messages started, I began to become engaged.  It was strange and mysterious and you were not sure if this was some weirdo just out to get to Maureen or if this was some otherworldly specter communicating through the phone.  However, this section of the film seemed to wrap up remarkably quickly as soon as Kyra’s dead body was found, and it was never returned to.  I am not even sure exactly what had happened with it.  I think the film inferred that it was Ingo (Lars Eidinger ) behind it all, but it was not clearly dealt with and just rapidly tossed aside as a plot point.

The ending of the film was complete garbage, going out of its way to be confusing just for the sake of confusion.  I am not sure the film even knows what had happened in the story.

Of course, throughout the entirety of the uneven film, Kristen Stewart was really good.  She has laid claim to the mantel of an actress to challenge anyone in films.  She showed so many levels of emotions and drew in the audience at every step.  If Stewart was not in this film, Personal Shopper would be one big mess.  As it is, the film is not very good, but her performance does elevate it to a higher level.

Going in Style (2017)

Image result for going in style movie poster

Sure, there may be some serious issues in play here, but this movie is basically fluff, starring three of our favorite older movie stars.  And that isn’t all bad.

Going in Style stars Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin as lifelong friends Willie, Joe and Albert.  After thirty years doing factory work, Joe was facing losing his house, while all three were losing their pensions.  However, when Joe winds up at the bank when it was being robbed, he gets an idea.

Heading to his friends, Joe suggests a bank robbery of their own.  Willie, who was in need of a kidney transplant, is the first to join in, but Albert needed more convincing.  When he discovered that the bank was taking his pension money to pay other bills, the proverbial straw had broken the proverbial camel’s back.

This movie is nothing special.  The story stretches credibility and nothing surprising happens.  The strength of Going in Style was the three wonderful actors in the lead roles.  In is fun to see Freeman, Caine and Arkin interact that you forgive the weaknesses that float around this film.

The movie itself is remarkably disposable, and will probably be forgotten fairly quickly.  Yet, these are three masters of their craft and they bring enough gravitas to pull the film into the positive category.  Add to them a fun role for Ann-Margret as Annie, a friend of Albert who wants more from him, and the cast is certainly a strength.  I really enjoyed the cute coupling of Arkin and Margret.

The jokes are pretty standard, focusing on jokes about older people, even having Christopher Lloyd playing an almost demented old guy.  Matt Dillon was here as a dimwitted FBI agent and our new Tick, Peter Serafinowicz appeared as Joe’s ex-son-in-law.

And the heist was pretty hard to believe.  The heist included a weird scene between Willie and a little girl that was meant to only set up the final act.

There could have been something really special here as the story had some serious situations come up early on.  The problem was these problems were cast aside, and the tone of the film was pretty inconsistent.  This film could have been a sharper, darker comedy that had something serious to say about the manner in which we treat our elderly people in America and the situation of banks and big business screwing over the little guy.  Unfortunately, Going in Style settled for the unremarkable instead of the satirical.

And yet, despite these problems, the charm of Freeman, Arkin and Caine really shone through and helped make Going in Style more than it should have been.  It is no where near as strong of a film as it could have been, but still, behind the star power of its lead roles, this film turns out to be a fun time.

The TV Week That Was

spoilers

Today is Wrestlemania Sunday!

The preshow for Wrestlemania 33 starts at 4 PM CST, so I am getting this column out a little sooner than I normally do.  Wrestlemania is a big day for me and I am looking forward to tonight’s event.

Image result for kurt angle wwe induction celebrationEspecially since the lead up to Wrestlemania has been excellent.  Friday night, on the WWE Network, we had the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony.  Yes, it was long, but I really enjoyed everything about it.  From the return of Eric Bischoff and Jim Cornette to a WWE stage to the induction speeches of Beth Phoenix, Diamond Dallas Page and Kurt Angle, the Hall of Fame always delivers emotion and enjoyable stories from behind the curtain of the world of professional wrestling.  Kurt Angle celebrated by pouring two jugs of milk over himself (much like Stone Cold Steve Austin used to do with beer).  Beth Phoenix introduced her husband, the Rated R Superstar Edge (Adam Copeland) and her beautiful little daughter in a poignant moment of the night.  Also inducted were the Rock and Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson), Diamond Dallas Page, Eric LeGrand (received the Warrior Award), Ravishing Rick Rude, and Teddy Long.

Image result for nxt takeover orlandoThen, Saturday night on the WWE Network, NXT presented its latest NXT Takeover Special, from Orlando.  This show is always a great night of wrestling and always has crowds way into the action, and this night was no exception. It has an early Match of the Year candidate when NXT Tag Team Champions The Authors of Pain defeated DIY and the Revival in a triple threat tag team match that was off the chart.  We also say Asuka retain her NXT Women’s championship with a little dirty tactics vs. Ember Moon.  And we topped it off with “Glorious” Bobby Roode defeated Shinsuke Nakamura in the NXT Championship match.  Roode-Nakamura was hard hitting and would have been considered a brilliant match had the triple threat tag match not been on the card.  Take Over has certainly set the bar for Wrestlemania.

wrestlingfightsThis past Tuesday, in preparation for Wrestlemania 33, TV Fights transformed into Wrestling Fights for one night.  Roxy Striar hosted the show that saw Billy A. Patterson defeat Joe Starr and Danielle Radford in a match of wrestling geekdom.  They fought best WWE superstar of all time, most anticipated match at Wrestlemania 33, and Worst storyline ever.  TV Fights is consistently entertaining on the Screen Junkies Plus streaming service and I really enjoyed the specialization during this week.  It was announced that they would do another wrestling themed TV Fights the week of SummerSlam.  YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!

However, there was more than just wrestling themed entertainment on television this week.

Image result for grimm series finaleGrimm brought its series run to a close on NBC with a finale called “The End.”  I used to watch Grimm regularly, but it faded from my watchlist a few years ago.  I was always feeling as if the season long arcs were basically the same arcs just repeated with different characters facing basically the same challenges.  Still, I enjoyed the early years of Grimm so I wanted to check out the finale.  And, with the exception of some poor child acting, the show came to an acceptable conclusion.  Our heroes came to a happy conclusion and they showed us the future of Grimms were well in hand.  I must say, I was confused as to why they kept calling Juliette, Eve.  Of course, when I stopped watching Grimm, Juliette had just been killed so I assume some weird mojo was going on.  It was cool to see these characters one more time, especially Monroe, who was always a personal favorite.

Image result for legion finaleAnother show coming to an end, albeit only as a season finale, was Legion.  David was able to rid himself of the parasite known as The Shadow King, but not without a cost.  Now, the Shadow King found its way into the body of Oliver, who rode away into the world to cause problems another day.  Not killing the Shadow King is a good choice.  Many times, these super hero shows kill their villains and waste the potential for a lot of future shows.  Not Legion which ended its 8 episode season with a post credit scene that saw David being kidnapped by some flying ball/robot.  Legion has been a trippy ride all season long and I am looking forward to season two.

Image result for bates motel shower sceneOn Bates Motel, the show recreated the iconic shower scene, with Norman Bates going full psycho on a hotel guest.  However, as a twist, Rihanna, who was playing Marion- the victim from the 1960 movie- was not the occupant of the shower.  Instead, it was Sam Loomis, the husband of Norman’s latest “love” interest. Sam had been having an affair with Marion and wound up on the other end of Norman’s iconic knife.  It was a surprising twist and now opens up the remaining few episodes of Bates Motel for any sort of conclusion.  Perhaps Alex Romero can finally find some justice for poor Norma.  Also, Norman’s brother Dylan FINALLY discovered that Norma had died.  The show referenced it as two years prior.  TWO F’N Years?  Come on, Dylan… pick up a phone, man.  I expect a huge finale for Bates Motel.

This upcoming week is a big one as well.  We have the Walking Dead season finale tonight.  Wrestlemania 33. The RAW after Wrestlemania is always one of the biggest shows of the year.  Tuesday will see the return of Agents of SHIELD.  Then we have Feud, Riverdale, Designated Survivor, American Crime.  Major League Baseball begins!  All kinds of excitement.

The Zookeeper’s Wife

Image result for zookeepers wife movie poster

The horrors of the Holocaust have been outlined in many films over the years.  Many of them are really well done, while others are not.  The latest version of the film fall smack in the middle.

The Zookeeper’s Wife tells the true story of Antonina Żabińska (Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh), a family living at a zoo in Poland who helped around 300 Jews escape from the dreaded Warsaw Ghetto.  After Poland is occupied by the Germans, Antonina and Jan have to report to Hitler’s chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühl), who takes a shine to Antonina.  His presence at the zoo makes it even more challenging for the Żabińskas to help the people that they were to help.

Jessica Chastain is wonderful in the lead role.  Chastain brings the power to her performance not only with her scenes with her male co-stars, but also with the animals that seem to be free throughout the film.  Whether she is cuddling with beautiful lion cubs or helping a new born baby elephant to breath, Chastain is amazingly believable as an animal handler above all others.

The scenes of the bombing of the zoo and then the extermination of the animals later because they “would not survive the winter” were brutal and hard to watch.  They also provided a stark comparison to the manner in which the Nazis treated the Jews.  The film also metaphorically compares the animals in the zoo with the Jewish people being kept in the Żabińska home, a zoo of a different type, but still a way to protect the inhabitants.

The scenes shot at the Warsaw Ghetto was a terrible reminder of how horrible these situations were.  The film does a good job of portraying the overcrowded location, and showing the blatantly disgusting environment that these men, women and children were forced to withstand.  The scene of the children being lifted onto the train by Heldenbergh, with the knowledge of what would come for these people, was heartbreaking.

This is another good film about the horrors of the Holocaust.  This is a period that we must always remember.

The Boss Baby

Image result for boss baby movie poster

I think most kids, especially the younger ones, will enjoy The Boss Baby, featuring the voice talents of Alec Baldwin.

However, I did not enjoy this much at all.

I suppose I am not the target audience for this film, however, Pixar, Disney and many other successful animated studios have shown that they can make entertaining films that appeal to both young children and adults.  The Boss Baby is simply not in that league.

Tim (Miles Bakshi) has a great life with all of his parents’ attention.  That is, until a new baby brother comes along.  However, there is something odd with the suit-wearing baby.  Tim discovers that the Boss Baby can speak and that he has arrived from his company with the hope to prevent the release of a forever-young puppy that will tilt the scale of love available to the side of the puppies and away from the babies.

Of course, Tim has been feeling jealous of the attention now being showered upon the new sibling so he teams up with Boss Baby so they both can get what they want… Boss Baby out of the house.

This film is needlessly confusing.  There is a lot of fantasy segments included in the film and it really tends to blur the line between fantasy and what is really happening.  In fact, at the beginning of the film, I was sure the whole film was going to turn out to be one big dream by Tim, and, honestly, I’m not convinced that that isn’t exactly what happened.

The voice cast is acceptable, with Alec Baldwin as the standout.  However, Jimmy Kimmel and Lisa Kudrow, two very funny individuals, were regulated to pretty unfunny roles as the parents of Tim.  Tobey Maguire provides the voice over narration, much like you might have had in the Wonder Years, and he is fine.  Steve Buscemi appears as well later in the film.

The film’s animation is pretty well done, and I do like the way the animation switches to a different style during fantasy segments.  Still, it probably caused confusion in the story telling as well.

There is a good message to the film as well, as it tells kids that, just because there is a new baby in the house, your parents are not going to love you any less.  I am sure that is a message that would resonate with many young children so the movie should be commended for that.  But I am a long way from those days and that message is not directed to me.

And that message gets lost among all the poop, puke, hit in balls jokes that are scattered throughout the film.  Again, humor that the 8 year old might find hilarious, but is actually quite tedious for me.

The Boss Baby wasn’t as bad as it could have been, but it is not something that I would want to see again, nor is it something that I expect to remember much about later in the year.

Ghost in the Shell (2017)

Image result for ghost in the shell movie poster

I had never seen the Anime animated version of Ghost in a Shell, so I went into the new film, starring Scarlett Johannson, completely free of expectations.  I have only seen a minimal amount of trailers even for this film.  I was the proverbial blank slate.

Unfortunately, I was not that impressed with the live action version of the Japanese film.  Honestly, I was pretty bored through most of it.

Major (Scarlett Johannson) is the first of her kind.  In a world where everyone had some kind of cybernetic enhancement, she was the first person to have her brain inserted into a fully synthetic body.  The “ghost” in the “shell” if you will.  Then we tried to find out stuff about her past while she does missions for the organization she was involved in.

I have to say that I did not know what was going on wit this movie for much of the first two-thirds of the film.  Because of that, I really found it dragging and I may have even been on the verge of dozing off once or twice.

This was not the fault of Scarlett Johannson, who was very good as Major.  There was a lot of controversy over her casting with the claims of whitewashing dogging the film.  Johannson, who really needs to lead a Black Widow movie soon, was good here, but, admittedly, I believe there were several actresses who could have done as much as she did here.  I understand why the studio chose Johannson though as she looked amazing all the time and she would definitely be a bigger name draw than other actresses that might be in the role.

The backdrop of the movie was spectacular.  The vision of the film was outstanding, with the creation of the world being clearly where most of the CGI budget went for Ghost in a Shell.  However, the CGI was not completely breath-taking as there were several scenes, action ones in particular, where the CGI stood out as obvious.  The visuals of the world behind the action was beautifully displayed consistently though.

The story itself was long and dull and dragged along at a snail’s pace.  It felt remarkably long despite it not being that lengthy of a film.  They do touch upon the theme of “what is life”, but there is not enough detail to that theme to really make it worth it.

I must say that one of the moments early on when I perked up was when the villain Kuze (Michael Pitt) showed up.  He piqued my interest at first as I enjoyed the visual presentation of him.  However, he was switched out of the villain role about halfway through the film and is replaced by a much less fascinating figure and what little good will I had built up with this character had been tossed aside.

In the end, I did not enjoy a lot about the, admittedly beautifully designed, Ghost in the Shell.  The story was weak, the tone was inconsistent and the acting was okay.  The action scenes varied between decent and CGI spot fests.  I hope the fans of the Anime and the original animated version of this film find this satisfactory, but as someone who has none of that background knowledge, Ghost in a Shell was not a good film.

The TV Week That Was

spoilers

Welcome back to The TV Week That Was, here at EYG, and I am going to start with some complaints.

Image result for flash musicalThe Flash musical episode.  I like musical episodes of television.  The Buffy the Vampire Slayer “Once More With Feeling”, Batman: The Brave and the Bold “Mayhem of the Music Meister”, Multiple Simpsons episodes… had special musical episodes.  The Flash seemed like a great idea since both Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist were on Glee (as was Darren Criss) and could sing and dance and they had former Broadway stars Jesse L. Martin and Victor Garber in the cast.  However, I found the hour to be lacking in many ways.  I did not think the story was worth the time.  I was disappointed in the music, not only the songs but also the amount of them.  With the exception of the song with Jesse L. Martin and Victor Garber, the songs were poor.  I actually thought some of the humor and writing of the show was solid, but the music was just weak.  Maybe I should give it a second viewing to see if my opinions continued to be as they are, but as of now, I disliked the musical Flash show.

Related imageThen, Scandal.  I was very disappointed with the “shock” ending of this show.  I saw that one coming completely.  The show was focused on Huck.  Olivia (continuing to be one of my least favorite characters on the show- how she has fallen) told Huck to murder her father.  In the process of Huck doing that, Rowan revealed the conspiracy behind why he killed the President. Huck discovered that there was a traitor in their midst.  So Huck went about eliminating suspects.  He got to his new girlfriend.  He scared her, but in the end believed her to be innocent.  And he then took her to see her friend, Jennifer Fields, the woman who was believed to be killed by Jake but wasn’t.  And she promptly shot Jennifer and Huck.  I saw that twist coming and was disappointed when they went ahead and did it.  Even though there was a cool surprise after that with Abby being revealed as the person behind this all (even though that felt very much out of character for her), the rest of this episode was very frustrating.

However… there was some really great stuff as well this week.

Image result for shadow king legionLegion.  What a great episode.  This was the penultimate episode in the first season, and we get confirmation that the monster/parasite in David’s mind is indeed the Shadow King.  They specifically said the name Shadow King, as well as his real name Amahl Farouk, in the episode.  This was a true geek out moment, as was the hint of David’s real father.  We saw a wheelchair with an X on the tires.  We comic fans know that David’s birth father is Charles Xavier, and this is the first indication that Professor X will also be the father on the FX series.  The whole David talking to David in a classroom with blackboards illustrating the history of the Shadow King was epic.  Legion has been an existential trip all season long.  It has been confirmed that Legion has been picked up for a season two.

Image result for feud bette and joan episode threeAnother great show on FX currently is Feud: Bette and Joan.  The Sunday night show is only on the third episode, but it feels as if it has gotten better with each episode.  Jessica Lange is tremendous as Joan Crawford.  The show has already reached the end of the filming of “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.” I’m curious to see where this show will go from here, but I am completely engaged in it.  I love Feud and Ryan Murphy.

Image result for trial and error nbc episode 3 and 4I was not convinced about Trial and Error, the new comedy on NBC featuring John Lithgow after the premiere, but the next two episodes were shown on its normal night and I am all in.  I actually was laughing very loudly several times.  Now, I must admit that I think the Sherri Shepherd character with her inability to see faces and to laugh at the inappropriate times is going to be a joke that is going to be old soon.  Despite that, I like the mystery of what is actually happening and John Lithgow is completely charismatic.

Image result for felicity huffman AMERICAN CRIME'I caught up with the new season of American Crime.  I don’t know why American Crime, which is shown on ABC on Sunday night, is not available on Hulu, but I was able to catch up on Amazon.  Felicity Huffman has been on all three seasons of the anthology show and I was amazed by her performance in the second episode.  The new season has several story lines going on, but Felicity has carved out a spot on this show as a great actress.

Image result for Top Ten vs. schmoes team match schmoedownThe Movie Trivia Schmoedown had a pretty good week this week on Collider Video on YouTube.  The Tuesday match was a return match between The Schmoes (Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis) vs. Team Top Ten (John Rocha and Matt Knost) that went down to the final question.  Top Ten got the win and earned themselves a team title shot vs. the Patriots.  Then, on Friday, the Wolves of Steel teammates, Mark Reilly and Clark Wolfe, had a singles match to gain a title match with “The Outlaw” John Rocha.  Mark Reilly defeated his teammate and then he had a great and intense promo with Rocha in the backstage area.  I know most of that stuff is put on like pro wrestling, but Reilly and Rocha were great here.  You could almost believe that they hated each other.  The Movie Trivia Schmoedown has become one of my favorite shows online during the week.  Congrats to Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis for their work on this entertaining show.

Next week… it is Wrestlemania 33 on the WWE Network, including Friday night’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Good viewing everyone.

Musicals

Image result for musicals

Musicals.  Many do not like these.  Many do. It seems that it is more difficult to make an effective musical than a normal movie.  So I decided to make the list of the best musicals made.

Now, I have to clarify some rules that I used to approach these choices.  One, I eliminated all of the Disney/Pixar animated movies such as Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Aladdin, etc.  Two, I have eliminated the films that have songs, but are performed on a stage or as over the action.  These examples can be This is Spinal Tap, Sing Street, School of Rock etc.

For me to consider a musical for this list, the music has to be involved in the story and have people singing from out of nowhere.

Runner’s Up:  Here are some that just could not reach the Top 10.  Chicago (which was in until the last second), Annie, La La Land, Beauty and the Beast (live action version), Pitch Perfect.

So… here is the Top 10 musicals

#10.  Grease.  It is the word.  John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John are great in Grease.  The music is unbelievably catchy.  It tells a fun story of the 1950s and a love story between two kids who expect that the other must change to make the other happy.  Message aside, Grease is an awesome musical.

#9.  Rocky Horror Picture Show.  It’s just a jump to the left.  Rocky Horror is a cult classic with the amazing Tim Curry.  I love the soundtrack of this film.  The movie itself may not be the greatest film ever created, but the fun is undeniable.  Meat Loaf, Susan Sarandon, Richard O’Brien, Barry Bostwick all provide vocals for songs that make this movie great.  And then the audience participation parts really made this a cult classic.  Go see Rocky Horror at a midnight show somewhere, some time and throw some toast.

#8.  Evita. Some people did not love this movie, starring Madonna as Eva Perón, but I thought it was fabulous.  I was never a huge fan of Madonna, but I played this soundtrack over and over.  I also found the movie itself extremely entertaining.  This movie had constant singing or music.  The actual dialogue was severely limited and that was not a bad thing.  The Waltz for Eva and Che is one of my favorite moments of this film.

#7.  The Muppets.  I was originally going to eliminate all Muppet movies form the list, but I decided that the return film for the Jim Henson creations really fit the category more than other Muppet films.  This film focused more on the human characters Gary and Mary, played by Jason Segel and Amy Adams, and these two definitely sprung into song throughout the film.  The nostalgia was dripping off every scene and made this movie one of the best Muppet films ever.

#6.  The Wizard of Oz.  I hadn’t thought about this film until I started doing the research for this list, but The Wizard of Oz certainly falls into the category with what I laid out.  Judy Garland’s iconic turn as Dorothy trying to make her way back to Kansas is one of the greatest movies in the history of cinema.

#5.  Little Shop of Horrors.  Feed me Seymour.  The funny musical with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin came from a Broadway play.  The story of a weird little plant that is actually an alien bent on world domination is fun, full of humor and great characters.  Audrey II is one of the best musical villains and really tears down the house (quite literally)!

#4.  Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.  This is easily the bloodiest film musical of all time.  Johnny Depp starred in the lead role of the barber who was back from exile and ready for revenge.  The bodies of his victims found their way into the meat pies sold by Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter).  This film even had the great Alan Rickman.

#3.  Mary Poppins.  Disney’s live action classic, Mary Poppins, brought us the greatest music from any Disney film.  Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke were iconic in these amazing roles, based on a book series by P.L. Travers.  The musical was so great that it inspired a film that told the story of getting the rights to shoot Mary Poppins from Travers.  That film was called Saving Mr. Banks, and it goes to show the impressive lineage of Mary Poppins.  There is soon to be a new sequel to Mary Poppins starring Emily Blunt.

#2.  Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.  The EYG Hall of Fame movie starring the incomparable Gene Wilder as the reclusive chocolate maker Willy Wonka was both a great musical and a terrifying trip.  The scene of Gene Wilder singing on the boat as it was going through its strange trip was frightening to countless children.  This film would not have been as successful though without the amazing Wilder, who filled Willy Wonka with such charm while also providing plenty of underlying sinister moments.   This one surely deserves a Golden Ticket.

#1.  Moulin Rouge.  The jukebox musical that took many present day songs and blended them in with the classic music of the period.  Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman had unbelievable chemistry as Christian and Satine and the tragic end is sure to bring tears to your eyes.  Moulin Rouge is a film about love.
