EYG Top 10 Billion Dollar Grossing Movies

EYG23

This week’s Top 10 Show came from a Patreon.  David Mitchell-Baker picked the topic and it was Top 10 Billion Dollar Grossing Movies.  There are 46 possible choices for this list.  I will say that, as you will see, I am quite a bit biased toward the MCU.  In fact, I probably had to drop a couple off the list just so there was space for some of the other films.

This was a tough list to compile as there are a couple of films that I thought would have made it, but didn’t.  There will never be a Transformers on this list (nor would Avatar…SPOILER).  Either way, the Honorable Mention section is going to be significant.

Here we go…

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2': First reviews - The ...#10.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.  The final installment in the Harry Potter franchise is a very strong conclusion to the magical series of films.  There are plenty of franchises that do not wrap up perfectly, but this film does it extremely well.  Part 1 does a great job setting everything up and Part 2 is filled with action and battles between Harry and Voldemort.

Jurassic Park' Roars To No. 1 Again, 27 Years Later: Weekend Box ...#9.  Jurassic Park.  This is the best of the series, by far.  The original idea was so spectacular and there was a magical feeling those first time we saw these dinosaurs.  It felt real and there was so much tense moments.  When those velociraptors are chasing the kids through the kitchen could not be more anxiety-filled.

Spider-Man: Far from Home' review: Another swinging win for Marvel ...#8.  Spider-Man: Far From Home.  I enjoyed this Spider-Man movie so much.  Peter heads to Europe on a class vacation and runs into problems with Mysterio and Nick Fury and so on.  Jake Gyllenhaal is so fantastic as Mysterio.  Everyone in our world knew he was going to be the villain of the film, but he does such a great job that even I wondered whether this was actually a flip the film was doing.  Tom Holland is great again.  Spider-Man is my all-time favorite super hero so this may be a bit biased, but I wanted to include this.

Movie review: 'Skyfall' shows James Bond still sharp and fit at 50 ...#7.  Skyfall.  One of the greatest James Bond films ever made.  I actually have it just behind Casino Royale on the Bond list, but Skyfall is so good.  It takes the Bond story in a different direction that other films did not.  It made it more personal than most of the Bond films.  Plus, Judi Dench is just amazing and her scenes as M are some of the stand out scenes.

The Dark Knight movie review & film summary (2008) | Roger Ebert#6.  The Dark Knight.  This is an amazing film, but I find it a bit overrated.  Understand, the film is brilliant, but I think some people have elevated this film ahead of what it should be.  A huge reason for that is, of course, Heath Ledger’s transcendent performance as the Joker.  Other elements feel a bit forced, but the Batman-Joker interactions are so tremendous.

Toy Story 3' Breaks a Pixar Record as No. 1 Film - The New York Times#5.  Toy Story 3.  I love this movie.  It may be my all-time favorite animated movie. If it is not number one, it is certainly in the discussion.  I have said this before, but I truly believe that Lotso Huggin’ Bear is one of the greatest villains in movie history.  I can relate so much to his backstory and I totally understand why the strawberry smelling bear made the choices that he made.  The scenes with the toys in the incinerator actually made me think that Buzz, Woody and the crew were going to die.  I had anxiety in the theater during that scene because I thought that they were going to burn up.  Toy Story 3 is so epic.

Avengers film order list: Iron Man to Endgame - Marvel movie ...#4.  The Avengers.  Okay, so we are starting the MCU run now.  Yes, there was Far From Home earlier, but the Avengers is special.  The MCU was such a risk and so many people did not think this was going to be possible.  How could you bring these heroes, who were in their own movies, together into one film and have it be effective.  Joss Whedon found the way because this was just feel good moment after feel good moment.  Had this not worked, what would have happened?  It worked like a charm and started the MCU into legendary status.

Captain America: Civil War' Box Office: Was It 'Captain America 3 ...#3.  Captain America: Civil War.  The third film in the Captain America trilogy does so much.  Not only does it feel like another Avengers film, it feels very much like a Captain America story.  It goes from the bombastic airport scene to the smaller and more personal Cap & Bucky vs. Iron Man.  Zemo was very underrated as a villain too.  His plan worked and he was able to break up the Avengers.  It also brought Black Panther and Spider-Man into the MCU.  So much happening, but brought together perfectly.

Avengers Infinity War movie review: Marvel has made an epic ...#2.  Avengers: Infinity War.  Yes, the MCU hits keep a rolling.  Infinity War was such a great movie.  You thought that Civil War had a big cast?  Well, the Russo Brothers said “hold my beer.”  Oh, the Russos did Civil War too. Never mind.  Thanos finally comes from out of the shadows that he has been hiding in since the post credit scene of Avengers and he brought the kick ass with him.  Then Marvel went another step and had Thanos win the film.  The final shot was Thanos, sitting down and admiring his handiwork, which was “dusting” half of the population of the universe- which included Spider-man, Black Panther, Bucky, Groot, Dr. Strange etc.  The amazing film set up the franchise for what was coming next and built unbelievable hunger for the next installment.

Avengers: Endgame' One Year Later: Why Marvel Thrived While DC ...#1.  Avengers: Endgame.  That next installment made almost 2.8 billion dollars and passed Avatar as the highest grossing film of all time, much because of the set-up done from not only Infinity War but also the previous ten years of films from the MCU.  Avengers: Endgame served up the most satisfying and thrilling conclusion possible.  The time travel is done so well and pays off things from every movie.  We get call backs from across the catalog.  Amazing writing.  Some of the greatest moments ever.  This is my favorite movie ever (up there with The Princess Bride).  I believe it deserved every penny that it earned.

Honorable Mentions:  I mentioned already that the MCU films such as Avengers: Age of Ultron, Black Panther, Captain Marvel.  I had originally written Rogue One in at number 10 before deciding to add the Harry Potter film instead.  I considered Star Wars: Last Jedi and The Force Awakens too.  Zootopia was not going to make this list, but it was a great animated film.  Finding Dory was another great Pixar movie as was Incredibles 2.  I really wanted to keep Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, but it just did not reach it.  Two Towers might have been a top 10 list had it passed the 1B.  Joker was another film that I thought, when I first started researching this list, would clearly be in my top 10, but it fell short.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga Movie Poster Image

I considered skipping this.  I am not much of a fan of Will Farrell comedies.  They all are pretty much repetitive and unfunny.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga is, unfortunately, not an exception.

Lars (Will Farrell) and Sigrit (Rachel McAdams) are childhood friends, who grew up together in Iceland with one dream:  to win the Eurovision Song Contest.

Forget the fact that Will Farrell looks 15 years older than Rachel McAdams, despite the characters supposedly being the same age, and how there is a ridiculous conspiracy theory part of the story to prevent Iceland from winning the contest, this movie does not know what it is supposed to be.  There are some scenes that are played totally for comedy but also some scenes that are played straight out of Pitch Perfect.  It this meant to be a satire of these types of music contests or are they celebrating them?

There were some good parts to the film.  Dan Stevens is great as the Russian competitor Alexander Lemtov.  He is easily the best part, standing out every moment he gets on screen.  Rachel McAdams is always good.

Some of the music is fun too.

Other than that… not much here.

The movie is over two hours long and absolutely does not need to be.  This is at least 25 minutes too long.  The extra time is not used effectively.

Pierce Brosnan’s character, Lars’ father, is poorly constructed and makes a total flip at a point in the narrative that makes no sense at all.  Brosnan is always charming, but this character has no redeeming value.

As a Netflix original, I’ve seen worse.  There are a few moments of fun.  Of course, there are also boat explosions, Icelandic elves, shots at America tourists, insane driving, and an oversized hamster wheel.  So much idiocy and not enough laughs from it.  If you are a fan of Will Farrell, you’ll probably like this because the framework of the film is basically the same.

Porco Rosso (1992)

Amazon.com: Movie Posters Porco Rosso - 27 x 40: Posters & Prints

You’ve heard the one about when pigs fly, right?

Well, now I have seen everything.

Yes, the next Studio Ghibli film, once again from Hayao Miyazaki, is Porco Rosso, a film about an Italian World War I flying ace who has been cursed by being turned into an anthropomorphic pig.

That is what I said.

Porco Rosso is now a hired bounty hunter to track down air pirates.  Porco flies his recognizable red plane.  He winds up in a dogfight with an American pilot named Curtis.

I loved this movie.  It was the weirdest thing I have seen in a long time and it was funny, energetic and well written.  It has a feel of the old series called “Tales of the Golden Monkey.”

And to make it all the more awesome… the English dubbing on the Porco Rosso character was done by none other than Michael Keaton.  Seriously, could that be any cooler?

The flying scenes in this animation are just beautiful. The entire animation is amazing, much like all of the Studio Ghibli movies.

This one caught me off guard and I really had a lot of fun with this one.  There is a lot to this, even more than what you might guess about a sea plane flying pig.  If you have not seen this one, check it out.

Only Yesterday (1991)

Only Yesterday | Studio ghibli movies, Ghibli, Studio ghibli

The next Studio Ghibli film is one that is quite different than the others.  This was not a magical fantasy with magical creatures.  No Tartaro.  No witches.  No Pandas.  It is just a story of memories, from a 27-year old girl to her younger years.  Memories that were basic, universal.

Unfortunately, again, the DVD was having issues with this movie.  It caused some glitches and skips around the one hour mark so I did miss a chunk of the story.

What I did see was an artistic masterpiece.  The animation was gorgeous and different than any of the previous films.  It fit the more realistic tone of the movie and was less of the style of anime.

It was a much more adult story and told a reflective story.  It is a coming of age story as well as a human drama.

Too bad I could not see the uninterrupted movie.

Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)

AFS Presents: KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE in Austin at AFS Cinema

Hayao Miyazaki’s next film for Studio Ghibli turned out to be a charming and breezy film featuring a young witch named Kiki.

In Kiki’s Delivery Service, Kiki is a 13-year old witch and, in tradition with witch training, she leaves home to survive by herself for a year.  Accompanied by her black cat Jiji, Kiki finds a new town in which to live and, since she can fly exceptionally well on her broom,  starts up her own delivery business.  Unfortunately, Kiki has some problems with her own self-image and it causes her to struggle with her power.

This film is fun and very light-spirited.  While it is still a film targeting a younger audience, I actually found this much more entertaining , unlike the other Miyazaki films meant for young children.

Probably the reason behind that is the charming and friendly character of Kiki.  She is remarkably likable and filled with honesty and heart.  The new English dubbing version of the film has Kirsten Dunst voicing Kiki.  It also has Phil Hartman providing the voice of Jiji the black cat.

Here comes the regular animation comment.  It is absolutely beautifully rendered and could be considered a piece of art.  The animation seems to be getting better with every movie released by Studio Ghibli, which is saying something.

The plot of this movie is not that important.  This is a character piece, zeroing in on Kiki and her path to becoming a successful witch.  She has to deal with such problems as Tombo, a boy who takes an immediate shine to Kiki, weather challenging her delivery business and other kids who are keeping her an outsider.

Some of the supporting characters in this film are just sweet.  Osono and her bakery provides room and board for Kiki while her first delivery customer Melanie MacQueen becomes a close friend.

Kiki’s Delivery Service does not dive too deeply in the mythology of the world.  Everybody knows about witches and they are not seen as a negative thing.  In fact, most of the regular people look at Kiki with awe and amazement when she flies.   Most of the witch ideas such as the apprenticeship when she turned 13 are dealt with as if it is a known commodity.  That is not a bad thing, but it does not provide a world that is deep.

The film is sweet and charming.  The characters are enjoyable and easy to watch and the movie has some very positive messages of self-worth and friendship.

My Neighbor Tortoro (1988)

Has Satsuki always had pigtails on Totoro movie posters and I just ...

The next Studio Ghibli film on the list in Hayao Miyazaki classic My Neighbor Tortoro.  This is one of the most beloved anime films in international cinema and, after seeing what had come before this on my DVDs, I was excited about seeing it.

Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed with this movie.

Yes, the animation is beautiful.  I have a feeling that when looking at all of these Studio Ghibli films, that is a statement that I can include in every review.

The story was sweet and I think that children would love this movie.  There is a touch of magic in the film and the two girl characters, Satsuki and Mei, are very relatable.  The story was simple and is more about the two girls than any plot points that happen in the film.  There was a fun moment at the bus stop, but other than that, I was unimpressed.

Much like Panda, Go Panda, I found Mr Neighbor Tortoro to be too much targeted toward the very young children and that there was not much here for the adult in me.

I also found what plot points there was here were fairly dumb.  I had a definite issue with Satsuki and Mei’s father, university professor Tatsuo Kusakabe.  He was one of the worst parents I have seen in a long time.  Things were happening right under his nose, as he was too involved in his work.  His children were disappearing and he just went about his business.

The whole plot point where Mei gets lost was so inane as well.  There were so many spots where I was just laughing at what was happening and the people’s reaction to the situation.

Beautiful to look at, great to listen to (with a wonderful score) but unengaging for me.  My Neighbor Tortoro was not what I had hoped it was going to be.

Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

GhbbliThe Truth About The Poster Of “Graves Of Fireflies”

I’m not crying…you’re crying…

Whoa, that was an experience.  Grave of the Fireflies was the next film in the list of Studio Ghibli movies, written and directed by Isao Takahata, and this one was a heart-aching tale of two young kids in Japan trying to survive the final few months of World War II.

Grave of the Fireflies tells the story of two young siblings, Seita and Setsuko, whose father was fighting the war and whose mother was killed in an enemy firebombing of their village.  This put brother and sister alone to face the struggles of life compromised by war.

We know what type of story this is going to be with the heart-wrenching opening to the film.  After that, the remainder of the movie is told in flashback, showing us how the situation arrived at what it did.

Older brother Seita took his little sister Setsuko to live with their aunt after the bombing.  The aunt was not a very empathetic individual towards the children.  In fact, there were not very many adults portrayed in this movie as being kind or helpful.  The adults could not find the time to help these children, showing that their own personal problems outweighed the needs of others.

Isao Takahata has claimed that this movie is not an “anti-war” film, but it would be difficult to argue that the themes of Grave of the Fireflies are not directly influenced from the consequences of the war and its effects on society and its point of view of the results.

The animation is haunting throughout the movie.  There were a couple of moments (Setsuko at the doctor) where I literally gasped at the images shown me.  The metaphor of the fireflies was both beautifully and painfully portrayed.

Grave of the Fireflies is unlike most animated movies you see.  It usually shows you the power of the underdog overcoming odds planted before them.  This film gives you the anguish of seeing the other side of that coin.  This is a masterpiece.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986)

CASTLE IN THE SKY (Studio Ghibli Fest 2018) | The Ridgefield ...

Laputa: Castle in the Sky was the first official animated film from Studio Ghibli, and it was one that I had a difficult time following, though it was not the film’s fault.

The DVD that I had had multiple glitches on it when I was watching this movie, especially about the first 20 minutes or so of the film.  That caused a real problem with understanding exactly what was happening and who these characters were.

Directed by EYG Hall of Famer Hayao Miyazaki, Castle in the Sky is a beautiful looking film, with amazing artistic animation and cool character design.

Once again, I have been watching these movies with the English dubbing done when Disney released these Studio Ghibli movies in the early 2000’s.  This film included the voice work of Mark Hamill, James van Der Beek, Anna Paquin, Cloris Leachman, Mandy Patinkin, Andy Dick, and the iconic Jim Cummings.

This tells the story of an orphan girl named Sheeta, kidnapped by government agent Muska, but rescued by young boy named Pazu.  Sheeta has a magical amulet that will lead her back to her ancestors home, a floating city of Laputa.  There is a race to find the city among a group of characters to gain the powers of the land.

Colonel Muska is a top notch villain in this film.  I love the work of Mark Hamill, who brings such a menace to his voice work.  I know that he was not the original voice, but he is such a great voice over actor that I cannot imagine that he did not make this better.

The film is beautiful to watch and has a lot of amazing action here too.  The finale is excellent and filled with drama.

It is unfortunate that the DVD did not work properly for me because this seemed to be another great animated film.

CASTLE IN THE SKY (Studio Ghibli Fest 2018) | The Ridgefield ...

Irresistible

Irresistible Poster Has Jon Stewart Sending in the Clowns | Collider

Former host of the Daily Show, Jon Stewart, has written and directed a new movie dealing with the way in which the country handles elections.

It is a comedy starring Steve Carell and it focuses in on a mayoral race in a small Wisconsin town that draws the attention of Washington, D.C. insider/campaign manager Gary Zimmer (Carell).  Gary brings his political techniques to the town in an attempt to get Colonel Jack Hastings (Chris Cooper) elected as a new style of Democrat.

His attempts to rebrand the election is noticed by Republican strategist and campaign manager Faith Brewster (Rose Byrne), who immediately sets up opposite Gary in an attempt to stop him from winning the election.

This is a political satire that is hardly subtle.  It has a message and it is hammering that message home throughout the movie.  I can see this being fairly polarizing of a film despite the fact that the film does not specifically pick a side.  It presents the system as problematic, not necessarily the parties.

Steve Carell is fine here, but none of the characters involved in this movie are really very deep.  They are surface level characters without a lot of deep motivations.  Again, he is speaking against the entire political structure, especially the involvement of money in the system.

There were some funny moments, but I do not think that there was enough big time laughs to help out the film.  The portrayal of the media is another shot that the film takes and they are equally handled.

The ending is difficult to accept and, although it is legally possible, it is hard to buy the actual situation playing out as it does.

I do love Jon Stewart, but this was not to the level I had expected.

My Spy

My Spy - Authentic Original 27x39 Rolled Movie Poster at Amazon's ...

I have been waiting to see this movie for a long time.  Not as long as The New Mutants, mind you, but for a bit.  I had always liked the trailers and so when I heard that Amazon had purchased the rights to the film, I was excited and yet impatiently waiting.

My Spy finally came out on Prime today, and it was about what I thought it would be like.

JJ (Dave Bautista) is a former soldier, now trying to transition into CIA Intelligence.  However, his violent tendencies did not quite work in the situations he was finding himself in.

So JJ and the tech agent Bobbi (Kristen Schaal) are assigned on a surveillance mission of a young nurse Kate (Parisa Fitz-Henley) and her little daughter Sophie (Chloe Coleman) in Chicago, whose uncle is involved in international terrorism.

Sophie is a smart, but lonely little girl and having trouble making any connections as the new kid at school.  She discovers JJ and Kate while they are surveying them.  She blackmails JJ into helping her out of certain situations.

This film is nothing spectacular.  The story and things that happen are basic and predictable.  There are a ton of storyline bits that stretch credibility.

However, I am going to say that I liked the movie.  The main part that I enjoyed was Dave Bautista, who does a fantastic job with this character.  He has a solid comedic timing and he is just likable.  Then, Chloe Coleman does a great job as well.  The relationship and the connection between these two characters are absolutely what gives this movie a pass.  They are funny together.  They have a very natural feel between them even when they are involved in a plot situation that makes little sense.

I have to say that I got some Kindergarten Cop vibe from the film.  Much of the story is very similar to that Schwarzenegger flick.  Dave Bautista carries the film, showing some absolute star quality.

Streaming this, I believe, will make this more successful.  It probably does not work in a theater, but the strengths of the movie come through better online than a lot of other movies.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)

Buy Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Subtitled) - Microsoft Store

Wow.

This was simply epic.

Adapted from a manga, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is an utter masterpiece.  This film came out just prior to the actual creation of Studio Ghibli, but most consider this film to be within its list of animated fares.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is a science fiction/fantasy film that takes place in an apocalyptic future where the earth had been blazed during the Seven Days of Fire, creating a poisonous forest named the Toxic Jungle, protected by giant insects and creatures called Ohm.

The remaining humans have formed into several communities around the land.  Princess Nausicaä is a beloved girl in the Valley of the Wind, who glides on the air like an eagle, and whose peaceful nature makes her a perfect communicator with animals and other creatures.

I love when a character is heroic and respects the lives of everyone.  One of the greatest thing about Spider-Man to me was how he would go out of his way to save anyone, even the villains who were coming to coming to kill him.  This is the same way I see Nausicaä.  She was putting her life on the line by trying to make everyone safe.  Early in the film, we see her give into the rage and how much of a kick ass hero she was.   Yet, from that point on, she decided that she would not lose control again. No more killing.  Killing enemies is the easy way and Nausicaä has gone to the hard way at every point.  She is a true heroic figure.

The version I watched was dubbed into English and featured voice work from Patrick Stewart, who plays Lord Yupa, another one of the most original and epic fantasy characters I have ever seen (and one of the most epic mustaches in animation history).  There is Shia LeBeouf, Frank Welker, Uma Thurman, Chris Sarandon, Edward James Olmos, Alison Lohman and Mark Hamill.

The animation of the film is beautiful.  There are times when I was just staring at the screen with my mouth open at the beauty of the images.  There may have been some choppy animation a few times, but the choppiness was easy to ignore when it was such a gorgeous artistic masterpiece.

Miyazaki does an unbelievably wonderful job creating the universe this story takes place within.  He reportedly wrote the manga it was based on too, but I had not read that, and I was able to follow the story without knowing it.

I was pulled into this story early.  Nausicaä is an amazing hero that was so easy to cheer for and her inspirational ideas make her a role model.  Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is suddenly one of my favorite animated movies of all time.

If you have not seen this before… find it.  It is worth the effort.

Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)

Lupin the 3rd: Castle of Cagliostro (1979) - IMDb

Okay, I’ve figured out what is going on here.

After some further research, I realized that there are three movies included on this collection of Studio Ghibli films that actually preceded the start of Studio Ghibli.  There was the film Panda, Go Panda, which was where the two Studio Ghibli founders, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, met.  And then there was this film, which was Miyazaki’s directorial debut.  Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro

This seemed to be one adventure in the life of master thief, Arsene Lupin III, called Wolf in the English dubbed version.

After a casino robbery, Lupin and his partner, Jigen Daisuke, discover that the money they had stolen was counterfeit.  So they resolved to find the counterfeit ring and take it over for themselves.  They discover that the culprit behind the fake money was Count Lazare de Cagliostro, who is preparing to marry the princess.

However, Lupin found himself in a place of familiarity and was determined to save the princess from the clutches of the evil Count Cagliostro.

After watching the Panda, Go Panda film, I had hoped that the list of movies that I was going to be watching was not going to be targeted to the really young.  That film felt like it was meant for 5-6 year olds, give or take.  It was not too long into the Castle of Cagliostro that I realized that my concerns would not be a problem.  The story was immediately a more mature type and there were a few moments in the animated film that I was shocked at what they showed. That was a relief.

The film was very funny, and full of excitement and charm.  All of these characters are warm and enjoyable.  Lupin was a captivating rogue and you really get to like the protagonist despite his criminal enterprises.   You knew there was a deeper reason for his desire to rescue the princess, but the film does a great job of keeping that tidbit for awhile.

Cagliostro was a menacing villain and seemed to be on the verge of success the entire time.  Everything this jerk does makes you want to see him get his at the end all the more.

From what I researched, apparently you can see a lot of Miyazaki’s style in this film.  Again, this was his directorial debut and it helped him move toward the Studio Ghibli collaboration.   There was so much goodness in this film that it has helped set up my excitement for what is coming next.

Panda Go Panda (1972)

Panda! Go Panda! (1972) - Where to Watch It Streaming Online ...

I have decided to start on my next summer watch, and that will be the Studio Ghibli films from Japan.  I had gone looking for a way to watch the films, which was harder than I thought.  I had planned on HBO Max, but there was trouble with that.  I did find a collection of DVDs on Amazon so I ordered them.

When they arrived, I took the first disc and started with the first film.  It was actually not on my first list of Studio Ghibli films.

According to Wikipedia, Panda Kopanda, which is the Japanese title, is translated officially into Panda, Baby Panda, but is known in North America as Panda, Go Panda.

This was a couple of short films featuring a young girl, Mimiko, whose Grandma left her, but she found a baby panda named Panny and his father Papa.  The three of them lived together in Mimiko’s house and hijinks ensued.

Doing some research, this was written by EYG Hall of Famer Hayao Miyazaki, who directed most of the Studio Ghibli films.  This was where he teamed up with Isao Takahata, and they would found Studio Ghibli.

Having watched this first collaboration, I will say that it is cute and sweet.  It would be very much for children.  I was not expecting this because it felt very much targeted at a very young child.  I had anticipated the animated Studio Ghibli films to be more mature in a sense and I certainly hope that this is not the path of the rest of these movies.

To be fair, I am sure that the target audience of this would love it, but for me, it was too childish.

However, there is a ridiculously catchy theme song- Panda Go Panda Go Panda….

Underwhelming

EYG Top 10 Jack Nicholson Movies

EYG23

This took some time to develop this list.  First, there was a problem with the link to YouTube for the Top 10 Show.  When I clicked on the video, it played a Topic Thunder episode instead of the Top 10 Jack Nicholson Movies.  I tweeted to Matt and he fixed it!  Then, I went through the list of his films and I was shocked with how few Nicholson films that I would include.  It meant that I had to watch a couple of the more well known films on his IMDB page that I had not seen to fill out the list.

In fact, I still did not see The Departed or Terms of Endearment so they will not make this list either.  I do not have an honorable mentions section because it took me to watch other movies just to get to 10.

Jack Nicholson as the wolfman in Wolf (1994) | Jack nicholson ...#10.  Wolf.  Not my favorite film, but Nicholson was having fun as the werewolf.  This is a good example of a movie that probably would not have made this list except that I needed a spot.  I enjoyed monster movies and Jack is good here.

The Witches of Eastwick' Review: 1987 Movie | Hollywood Reporter#9.  The Witches of Eastwick.  Nicholson gets to play around as a demon/devil and gets to have his fun with Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon and Cher.  And with the witches getting their revenge on him in the film, it gives the women power message.

The Bucket List - movie - review - The New York Times#8.  The Bucket List.  The best part of the Bucket List, which is an under rated emotional film, is the connection between Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.  They are clearly the reason why The Bucket List is worth seeing. This movie became iconic with that term “bucket list.”

As Good As It Gets Review | Movie - Empire#7. As Good as it Gets.  This is actually one that I would have had higher, but I watched it recently and I had some issues with the relationship with Nicholson and Helen Hunt.  I just did not buy their connection as shown in the movie.  Yes, there are some great moments with them and the line “You make me want to be a better man” is fantastic, but I just feel as if it is more of a feel of an abusive relationship.  I do not believe it will last.  However, Nicholson and Greg Kinnear’s relationship is outstanding, easily the best part of the film, and the dog is cute.

Criticwire Classic of the Week: Roman Polanski's 'Chinatown ...#6.  Chinatown.  Here is one that I just watched for this list.  It is great that I was then able to check off one of the classic boxes as well. Chinatown is a great noir film with Nicholson as a private detective.  It might have been higher on my list but I am not sure how I felt about the tragic ending of the film.  Nicholson is exceptional in the role of J.J. Gettis and he carries everything involving this movie.

Watch [[ About Schmidt ]] 2002 Full HD Movie | Peatix#5.  About Schmidt.  Here is another film that I just watched (today actually) for this list.  I really loved this movie with Nicholson as the widower trying to find himself after his wife of 42 years dies.  This is the type of film that I most likely would not have given much of a chance had it not been so high on both Matt and John’s lists on the Top 10.  I am very glad I got a chance to watch it and it does make my top 5 on this list.

The Greatest Lawyer Movies of All Time: A Few Good Men | Blueprint ...#4.  A Few Good Men.  I love this movie and it might be ahead of some of the films above it on this list except the Nicholson role is more supporting than anything else.  It may be a lesser screen time role, but it is as impactful of a role as you are going to find.  His monologue in the court facing off with Tom Cruise is magnificent.

Batman' 1989: A Look Back at Jack Nicholson's Joker - mxdwn Movies#3.  Batman.  I just rewatched this movie a couple of days ago when the Michael Keaton news came out and I am amazed how much the Joker role worked with Nicholson in it.  He is clearly having a blast acting out as the Joker and he perfectly plays the line between unhinged psycho and criminal mastermind.

Michael Douglas: how we made One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ...#2.  One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.  A great performance from Jack in the mental institution.  Cuckoo’s Nest is one of the best films in the 1970’s and it had a lot to say about the state of asylums in the country.  Fantastic ensemble cast, especially with Nurse Ratched, Louise Fletcher.  Nicholson, Fletcher, and Milos Foreman all won Oscars for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which also won an Oscar for the Best Motion Picture.

Stephen King movies revisited: looking back at The Shining | Den ...#1.  The Shining.  I have to agree with Matt (sorry John).  This is the greatest movie with Jack Nicholson in it.  The Shining was adapted from a book by Stephen King (who was notably disappointed with the film version).  Stanley Kubrick brought this version to the big screen and created a masterpiece that is iconic as can be.  The “Here’s Johnny” scene is known by everyone, even if they are not aware of The Shining.  It is a scary film too as we see this man slip quickly into insanity.  Nicholson brought everything to this role and was totally believe as a crazed killer.

As I continued to fill up my eventual Top 10 Jack Nicholson films, I watched About Schmidt, one of the top 5 films in the combined list of Matt and John on the Top 10 Show.

I had thought I had seen this one, but it was not too long into it that I realized that I had not.

After 42 years of marriage, recently retired Warren Schmidt (Jack Nicholson) lost his wife Helen (June Squibb) very suddenly.  Warren was already struggling with his life, his marriage and his purpose, and this loss sent him into a downward spiral.    With his daughter Jeannie (Hope Davis) preparing to get married to a man Randall (Dermot Mulroney) whom Warren does not like.  Warren takes off on the road in his RV to go see his daughter.

Jack Nicholson gave a Oscar-nominated performance as the grief-stricken, lonely and sad man.  You can see the layers of pain and anguish hidden in the eyes of Nicholson.  He has an early film rant about his deep feeling about his wife that gives you an idea about Schmidt.  Warren Schmidt could be such a negative character, but Nicholson imbues him with such life and emotion that you cannot help but connect with him.

There are some great supporting performances in this movie as well.  Kathy Bates played Roberta, Randall’s mother and dominates every scene that she is in.  Howard Hessman played Larry, Randall’s father.  I love June Squibb in just about every movie she is in and, though she had little scene time, she makes a lasting impression in About Schmidt.

There is a lot of humor in director Alexander Payne’s film.  He combines the natural humor of the situation with the emotion of the moment in a beautiful and poignant manner.  They spend some wonderful moments with Warren on his travels to his former childhood home, to his college and a RV park.  The film is more of a character piece than a plot driven story.  We see how everything affects Warren and develops that character even more.

About Schmidt was a really wonderful movie that I enjoyed tremendously.  I am glad I got a chance to see this because of the Top 10 list because this is most likely a film that I may not have had a desire to go back and see.
